Thinkpad-Samsung or Lenovo-Samsung NVMe SSD? What is this?

Q: Thinkpad-Samsung or Lenovo-Samsung NVMe SSD? What is this?

In this discussion, Amy from Lenovo recommends that we purchase Lenovo SSDs if we want thermal management: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/Can-I-add-a-Samsung-950-Pro-NVMe-SSD-to-... The link no longer directs us to a particular model. So I perform a search on the Lenovo site and see (among others) this model: ThinkPad 256GB SAMSUNG PCIe NVME TLC OPAL M.2 SSD http://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories-and-monitors/memory-and-storage/storage/HDD-BO-ThinkPad-M-2... What is this? A Samsung SSD rebranded as a Lenovo SSD? Would I gain in compatibility with such a drive or not, and specifically regarding thermal management? Also, is there a misprint below concerning the read speed? "ThinkPad 256GB SAMSUNG PCIe NVME TLC OPAL M.2 SSD supporting PCIe 3.0 interface standard up to 4 lanes shows much faster performance than previous SATA SSDs. It's sequential performance is up to 300MB/s for read operation and 1700MB/s for write operation by 4 lanes. Test-Prove 100% Compatible with ThinkPad machines. " That has to be 3000MB/S, right?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have two Samsung NVMe 950 Pro (MZVKV512) that came preinstalled in a Lenovo ThinkPad P50 running Windows 10 x64. The Samsung Magician (latest v4.9.6) software does not detect the drives as Samsung Brand SSDs and therefore OS Optimization is unavailable (the only option is to run a benchmark). Samsung Magician supports this SSD as I can see users in other forums using the software on their systems (not necessarily Lenovo). I have also installed the Samsung NVMe Controller driver and this is showing in Device Manager. There are no system updates available and UEFI BIOS is up to date (version from the 4th May). Any ideas?

Hello, I will get a new laptop ThinkPad L570 from my company. It will have a standard SATA3 256GB SSD installed.I want to upgrade the laptop and want to install a "Samsung 960 EVO MZ-V6E1T0BW NVMe SSD (1TB)". Question 1: How does the SATA connector of the 2,5'' main storage tray looks like? I searched the whole internet for it, no luck. Question 4: DeLock has some adpaters for M.2/NVMe (http://www.delock.de/produkte/1097_SATA-Express/62786/merkmale.html?setLanguage=en), but I don't know if the adapter would fit into the L570. Hi guys, I bought the T570 with their cheapest SATA HDD so that I can clone it and upgrade myself, but once I popped open the back, I found that there's not an M.2 slot available for the upgrade drive (Samsung 960 Pro). According to the manual, https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1240407/Lenovo-Thinkpad-T570.html?page=139#manual, I need a converter of some sort, which I presume replaces the SATA cable and the mount for the much smaller form factor drive. I found this http://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories/memory-and-storage/storage/HDD-BO-ThinkPad-M-2-SSD-Tray/p/4..., but it has 0 information on whether it's compatible with the T570, and whether this is what I need in the first place. Can someone help? Has anyone done this already? Can I pick it up somewhere so that I don't have to wait 5-7 days for it to arrive? I also have a 3-year NBD support contract, but after calling support, I am told they can't just come bring the part. Thank you in advance.

For several months, I have had Samsung Magician 4.97 installed on my P70's Windows 7 and Windows 10  boot drives -- both are original Lenovo-suppled and installed 512 GB Samsung NVMe drives.  This utility offered limited functionality, simply recognizing the drives and allowing them to be benchmarked, tested and described but nothing else.  No ability to update firmware, adjust caching or over-provision the drives.  Moreover, Lenovo has previously not responded to my posted queries regarding how to update the firmware on these units, as they are out of sync -- one of the devices has a much older rev. level than the other and I dare not try to set-up a RAID array under these conditions. I was hoping the newly released Ver. 5.00 of Magician would remedy this.  However, circumstances have become worse, as the utility does not even "see" the two NVMe drives. Does anyone else have experience with 5.00 or a potential fix to the firmware update issue?  Any insights or opinions would be appreciated.

Hello Friends.  I successfully installed a Samsung 950 Pro M.2 SSD as a boot drive just fine.  However, it looks like the Windows 10 NVME driver is being used in place of the Samsung NVME driver.  I saw this post here where it says: "Windows is indicating it is using the NVMe driver for this drive." https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Envy-750se-capable-of-M-2-NVMe-... However I do not know how to determine this myself.  I am using a utility called "AIDA64 Extreme" and it's telling me the driver provider for the 950 is Micrososft and the driver version is 10.0.14393.0.  So, how do I get the 950 to use the Samsung driver instead?  Thanks for any help.

Microsoft has released NVMe Hotfixes 2990941 & 3087873 that add native NVMe drivers to Windows 7.
However if I am say installing Windows 7 SP1 on say Samsung NVme drive and Samsung has released suitable drivers in the form of INF, SYS and CAT files, do I really need to integrate these MS Hotfixes in Windows 7?
Can Windows 7 SP1 supplied with Samsung NVMe drivers (Either slip streamed or during install) be able to detect Samsung NVMe drive and install itself on to it?
As the title says are those MS Hotfixes a must (sort of pre-requsite) to get NVMe drive detected during installation, apart from any vendor provided drivers?
Thanks.

Hey guys,

I'm at my wits end here and hopefully someone can help me out.

I recently bought a Dell xps 8900, a Samsung 950 pro and Able Conn PCIe 3.0x4 for M.2 to install in a PCIe slot on my tower.

For the past two weeks I've been trying to either a clean install of Windows 7 from a thumb drive and by cloning using Acronis and have failed many times over.

I keep getting error messages but the drive is showing up in the bios and in system management so I'l not sure what the deal is.

I called Samsung tech support and the said their migration soft ware won't work because the sad is not install in the M.2 slot on the board and thats why i used Acronis.

When the system reboots, a line of code comes down cash but before it reboots to my other drive a see a few lines that read "ERROR" but that's about all I can read.

Hopefully someone on here can shed some light on what I'm missing.

Thanks in advance!

A:Help with Samsung NVMe 950 pro.

Well, the Ableconn M.2 adapters don't indicate support for Win7:

Quote:
Windows 10/8, Windows Server 2012 R2, Linux series, Fedora, SUSE, Ubuntu, Red Hat native drivers support both PCIe-NVMe and PCIe-AHCI

Unless you can provide the actual content of the errors you're seeing it will be difficult if not impossible to help.

I have read about 100 different explanations of this process all fraught with scary changes to BIOS and difficulties installing windows from scratch on the card from a sd card. I have a Dell xps 8910 with built in m.2 slot in mb. Currently using slow hdd.

I wanted to ask if this procedure would work.. Please correct my errors

1 Boot into safe mode from MSCONFIG. Hit f2 and go into bios and change from RAID to AHCI. Continue to boot into safe mode. run MSCONFIG again and set to normal boot. Now reboot computer. It should now be AHCI ready for ssd.

2 Shut off everything and unplug all peripherals then install the M.2 card in the empty M.2 slot. (BTW, is there already a screw in the hole on the MB so I can screw down the card after installation) Will I have to open the interior metal "cage" to access the m.2 slot)?

3 Boot back into Windows using the HDD as the boot disk. Will the SSD be recognized as present and empty? I hope.

4. Use the free Intel data migration tool to clone the ssd from the HDD. Shut down.

5 Open up the computer again and unplug the HDD leaving it in place but unplugged from power and sata.

6 Boot up computer. The SSD should be recognized as the boot disk right? or do I have to do something in Bios?

7 Assuming steps 1-6 work shut down and plug the HDD back in.

8 Boot into windows 10 again the ssd should now be the boot disk.

9. Format the HDD so I can use it to store old data.

10. Install faster Samsung driver for SSD.

A:Installing NVME M.2 Samsung 1tb ssd

Before I start, is this a Samsung M2 or a Intel M2 ? I looked at step 10 and said ? Since I've never used the Intel tool, but I do know its from Acronis, Intel may lock out any other none Intel M2 drives. And this could be a problem that you want to avoid. If its an Intel M2 no problem.

In step 6 - You probably will need to change the boot sequence so that the M2 drive is first in line otherwise the system will want to boot from your HDD which is not installed. NOTE: This needs to be done before you replace your HDD.

Then you should be happy.

PS: I have not seen a USB to M2 external connection. If you where installing a standard SATA attached SSD, they do make them for that configuration.

I recently installed a Samsung 960 Pro M.2 NVMe on the motherboard and migrated the OS from the existing HHD.  I disconnected the HHD and the computer booted up and was operating normally with the M.2.  However, when I went to install the Samsung M.2 NVMe controller and the Samsung Magician software, both programs indicated that the Samsung M.2 was not connected.  I called Samsung and the technician informed me that the only time the system won't recognize the M.2 is if the BIOS is set to RAID.  He informed me that the computer would probably not boot up if I reset the BIOS to AHCI and I would have to perform a clean install of the OS.  Both circumstances were true.  Dell ships their computers with the BIOS set to RAID if it has a conventional hard drive!

A:Adding Samsung M.2 NVMe SSD

There are ways to switch from RAID to AHCI without reinstalling -- that said DO NOT try without a complete backup of the system (or that fallback image -- you can always revert to RAID if it fails to work).

I have a samsung 950 pro I am trying to install into my brand new Inspiron 15 7000 (7559) laptop. There was a 128gb M2 in the slot, but it is too small for my programs. I thought the greater speed of the 950 would be nice along with more storage.
The computer does not recognize the drive at all and I have searched and read until my eyes bleed and can't find any reason it should not (or should) work on this machine.
This is the Skylake  version, the specs from Speccy say the PCIe lanes is x16. Here is a screenshot of my mobo.
Has anyone had success with this in the Inspiron? I have updated the Bios to 1.0.3. What am I missing? No matter what I read and try this drive is not showing in bios, computer management, nowhere. Is the drive defective??

A:Samsung 950 Pro M2 NVMe not found

I tried the same with similar results using a Samsung 951 NVMe PCIe 3.0, expecting the Skylake Chipset that support it (checked Intel HM170 before buying) to work..
In fact I found out later is that only SATA III is supported on this machine, so no PCIe NVMe! Unbelievable as chipset should be able to and PCIe is way forward, hope it can be fixed with bios update still somehow. Can't keep my hopes up so I am selling my 951 PCIe!

Hello everyone,
I am having trouble in installing Windows 7 x64 on my Samsung 950 Pro. My configuration is the following:

Asus P9X79 Deluxe, Intel i7 SB-E 3930k @ 4500 Mhz, 64GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600 Mhz, Corsair AX1200i PSU, x2 Gigabyte 980ti SLI, Intel 750 Nvme 400Gb, Samsung 950 Pro Nvme 512 Gb, Samsung 850 Pro 256 Gb, Noctua NH-D15.

I possess both the Intel 750 400gb NVMe and the Samsung 950 Pro. Both of them can install Win 8.1 and 10 without problems, but I would need to use Windows 7.

What I tried so far:
-Created a bootable USB drive with Rufus.
-Created another usb with the Samsung NVMe drivers on it.
-Removed all the other drives from the system.
-Removed the "secure boot" option from the bios.

The problems are the following:
-My Win 7 iso is x64, but when I try to create a bootable usb with Rufus in GPT, it says that the ISO file is Larger than 4Gb so I cannot select FAT32.
-If I use MBR partition scheme the installation does not even load when I reboot, saying "insert media disk".
-If I create a bootable usb with the Windows 7 USB DVD tool, the installation starts but fails to accept the NVMe drivers, saying "they are not signed".

I read several threads and don't know exactly what I am missing here. I know there is the possibility to install Win 7 onto a standard ssd (I also have a 850 Pro so I could use that one) and then clone it to the 950, but if possible would prefer sticking with a normal installati... Read more

Best guess is that you need to integrate certain updates (in particular there is an NVMe update, and some driver framework updates) into the install images.

While I found many posts for other products for this brand I can't seem to find any reliable information regarding nvme ssd support for V5-591G.  Currently I'm using a Samsung 850 PRO 512GB with my operating systems and my data on it and I've been using 500GB external USB 3.0 HDDs for persistent storage. It is not specific in the hardware manual for the SSD specification but checking with FRU listed (item11 page55). Product specification sheet here shows : SSD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, NGFF 2280, removable, upgradable too.

I would suggest to have amn M.2 SATA SSD like Samsung PM871 instead of those using NVMe protocols.

I hope this helps answer your query.

I have a new 7710 that came with a 256GB NVMe SSD.  I have upgraded it to a Samsung 950 Pro 512.  I am using Windows 10 UEFI.
I have a question on the bios setting.  Should it be AHCI or RAID.  The machine came default with RAID On and came with Win 10 Pro pre-installed.
Currently I switched it to ACHI, used the MS Download and installed Win 10 Pro.  Once in windows, I installed all the dell drivers and also the Samsung NVMe driver.
I have read on different forums that the bios setting should be RAID, but also read it should be AHCI.
Question:  Which should it be.  Is one better than the other?
Or is it just that if in AHCI, it will use the MS NVMe Driver (or Samsung NVMe Driver) and if in RAID, it will use the Intel IRST drivers?
I assume if AHCI like I have it, then I can use the Samsung NVMe Driver.  I have read if not in AHCI, the Samsung NVMe Driver will not install.
If I switch to RAID, then I would need to use the Intel Rapid Storage Tech (IRST) Driver and not the samsung driver (I read samsung driver will not install if AHCI).
So I am confused if one is better than the other (AHCI or Raid).
FYI, I have been using for around 10 days and no BSOD due to the PCIe NVMe drive.

Disk drive information for all installed disks. Particularly with the NVMe drive S.M.A.R.T. is not functioning even though it should be. All other drives display S.M.A.R.T. correctly.
Performance Benchmark. Only this function is selectable. All other functions are not available. Probably because the Intel Rapid Storage Techonlogy driver is loaded and not the Samsung NVMe

From performance view it seems pretty fast. Today I am going to change the BIOS setting to AHCI and I will share my results.

Hi!
Has anyone installed a Samsung 960 into the PCIe-bus card place?
With success...'

I've seen from previous Dell-site that xps 8920 has been sold with 256 GB ssd pcie x4 dysk?!
What does "dysk" mean?
What type of ssd has that been?
Where has it been installed?
Is there a different bios-version for these PCs vs ones without ssd and only having a 32GB ssd cache onboard?

If successfully able ti install Samsung 960 (with OS and other programs onboard it) is there any use of still having the 32GB ssd cache to remain on the motherboards m2-place? Hence to still be directed to speed up the hdd as is now? Or can the ssd cache only function as intended if the OS is also on the drive to which the ssd-drive is directed to?

On the motherboard there are an m2-slot but Ive heard that this only supports sata-format and is not applicable for the nvme/pcie format?!

Thanks

While I found many posts for other products for this brand I can't seem to find any reliable information regarding nvme ssd support for V5-591G.  Currently I'm using a Samsung 850 PRO 512GB with my operating systems and my data on it and I've been using 500GB external USB 3.0 HDDs for persistent storage. Since my USB 3.0 data transfer rates are extremely low - as it seems of a windows driver issue - I'm looking for alternatives. Lately I've been thinking of getting an NVME drive and have both my win 10 and fedora installed on it while leaving my storage for my 2.5" ssd and the external drives only as backups, copied onto them regularly. So, can I safely buy a 950 PRO nvme SSD from samsung and boot from it in UEFI mode without major issues? I found a similar question but that was for VN7 and a bit older (1.5Gbps capped). Thanks for your helps!Cheers and happy weeked for you!

I've read the various forum threads regarding M700's, 900's and m.2 drives.  None of them directly answer the question of compatibility with a Samsung 960 Pro. I have added the 960 Pro to an m700 tiny with Windows 7.  The drive does not show up in BIOS nor is it available in the OS.  I've downloaded the drivers as well as Samsung Magician.  Both say no drive found.  I am leaving the original SSD in as boot drive. Any ideas?

I'm looking for advice on the best procedure for cloning the 500GB HDD supplied with the P51 to a Samsung 960 EVO 500 GB M.2 MVMe drive.I can see and work with the m.2 drive in Windows 10 and I can see the drive on NVMe0 in the BIOSUsing Acronis True Image 2015, I can see the drive to select it as a destination for the cloning operation, but when it switches to its own bootable program to execute the cloning procedure, it cannot see the m.2 drive and fails. If I boot directly from the Acronis disk, it states there is only one drive in the system and cannot proceed.  Has anyone succeeded with this particular machine and scenario? I might upgrade my software if I knew it would recognize an NVMe drive or peraps someone else's cloning software would be better.  I'm open to suggestions.

A:P51 problems cloning 500GB HDD to Samsung 960 EVO M.2 NVMe

Hello and welcome,IIRC TIH 2015 didn't support NVMe drives.  This Acronis article seems to indicate that full support didn't show up until a 2016 update:https://www.acronis.com/en-us/blog/posts/you-spoke-we-listened-acronis-true-image-2016-update-2-hereI just now did a quick test using TIH 2017 bootable media on my whitebox desktop. It can see both of my m.2 SSDs:  830 EVO (SATA) and 960 EVO (NVMe).

YMMV,
Z.

Hello all I have been using this latop for about a month and it felt slower than my alternate Dell XPS with very similar specs.  It has a Samsung 850 Pro SSD, which is technically slower than PM961 on the lenovo.  However, all my programs seem slower and jittery - the same programs runs butter smooth on my Dell.   I have installed the latest NVMe drivers from Samsung, am not using thunderbolt port and also using Intel Rapid storage technology.  What may be causing this slowness? The programs I mainly use are for development: Eclipse, IntelliJ, database daemons etc. Below are my crystal disk stats: -----------------------------------------------------------------------CrystalDiskMark 6.0.1 x64 (C) 2007-2018 hiyohiyoCrystal Dew World : https://crystalmark.info/-----------------------------------------------------------------------* MB/s = 1,000,000 bytes/s [SATA/600 = 600,000,000 bytes/s]* KB = 1000 bytes, KiB = 1024 bytesSequential Read (Q= 32,T= 1) : 1730.315 MB/sSequential Write (Q= 32,T= 1) : 1418.643 MB/sRandom Read 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 747.831 MB/s [ 182575.9 IOPS]Random Write 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 459.212 MB/s [ 112112.3 IOPS]Random Read 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 303.422 MB/s [ 74077.6 IOPS]Random Write 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 229.395 MB/s [ 56004.6 IOPS]Random Read 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 42.850 MB/s [ 10461.4 IOPS]Random Write 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 131.647 MB/s [ 32140.4 IOPS]Test : 1024 MiB [C: 48.4% (114.7/237.2 GiB)] (x5) [Interval=5 sec]D... A:How to install Samsung sm951 NVMe OEM on ZBook G3?

Samsung 950 and 951 are incompitable with HP Zbook G3 series. Those two hardwares may take long time to boot and much slower than normal boot time.

I am an HP employee.
