I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This adds in a right click print option for directories.

I love to keep track of directory contents by printing them out. Various reasons.

By going to a command prompt, then to the directory of choice, I can send the results of the "dir" command to "prn" with the ">" (greater than) sign.

There are all sorts of switches to affect the way the printout looks. The ones I like are /b followed by /o:gn which gives you names only, directories first.

I run into a problem when there are hidden and system files in a folder. The switch for them is /a:hs.

No matter how I present the switches, all of the above, I cannot get the dir command to print everything. I get either all of the non-h&s, or I get just the h&s.

Any way I can solve this?

I can do this (easily) with UNIX, my old Amiga, and even MS-DOS. I would like to "print" the contents of a directory to a new file. For instance, if I have a directory for a particular album of music I would like to create a new file in that directory, perhaps entitled Contents, with the names of all the MP3s in it.I found instructions at a Microsoft support page, <HERE> which kind of does what I want, but it sends the contents directly to the printer without the option to catch it in a file -- so, not quite what I need.Does anyone have a relatively simple way to do this? Thanks.

When I click My Network Places at the top of the list is the drive "acer (c ) Carla Arseneault (carla)". Carla arsenault is the name of my computer.Anyway, It contains all the files of the C drive, which is quite alarming. Its located above Shared Documents file, not in it, then the list goes on to list servers and so on that are on the network. It even has the little hardrive logo by it!

I dont understand why im seeing it there. Was it actually viewable by anyone on the network?
I tried goin into my computer, right clicking properties on the c drive, and then security tab where it warns me about the danger of sharing the root of the driver. I click it, and the box then states "share with other computers on network" or something along those lines is not checked...

Is it just listed there on my local computer, or for everyone to see!?! Perhaps this is there to make it easier to bring stuff to shared documents? Anybody else ever see their c drive on the My network places?

I dont use this computer anymore, so Im not worried about them seeing all the contents now, but am more interested in learning whether it was available to others at any poiint in time from what you can tell with this info (or any other info I havn't looked at)

thanks and all opinions would be appreciated

Here is my scenario. Dell Win 7 64 laptop. Spilled coffee on the keyboard. Would not even turn on. Took it to a tech who advised its toast. He was able to copy the entire C Drive from the Dell hard drive on to a 1 TB external drive.

Now I have purchased a new Samsung Win 7 64 laptop. Can I just move all the files from the Dell C drive to the Samsung C drive and end up with the same things I had?

Thanks,

TRS

A:moving entire C drive contents from one laptop to another

You say the tech was able to "copy the entire C drive".

If that was just an ordinary copy with the mouse, then the only thing you could copy back would be your personal data files, if any of that was on C. Pictures, videos, mp3s, etc.

You could NOT copy back your Windows installation from the old C and expect it to work.

You say "move all the files" from the old to the new. If that includes Windows files, then no. Personal files, yes.

I'm guessing your new machine has Windows, so you wouldn't want to copy the old Windows to it.

You'll have to reinstall your old programs.

I have been having issues with the booting of my c drive. I just installed a fresh copy of Win7 64 onto a fresh hard drive and it is booting. What I want to do is copy over the entire contents of my original C drive over to the new drive. I have a second computer to do this on and am not sure how to do it. I doubt that dragging and dropping will copy all the hidden and system files, which is what I want to do.

The reason I don't want to simply make an image of the first drive and restore that is that the original drive does not boot AND contains a system partition that I don't want to bring along. I am hoping to marry the bootability of the new drive with the files and information on the original drive.

Any advice?

Paul

A:How do I copy the entire contents of boot drive?

Why not image your C: partition, but ignore the small system partition? Then restore that image to the partition holding your newly installed Windows system, overwriting it.

The new system partition will remain in place and not be touched by the image restore. You'll probably end up with a non-booting system again, but circumstances will be completely different and you have a much better chance of successfully using the Startup Repair.

Basically it'll just be a matter of "re-detecting" the Windows system and creating a new boot entry for it.

(I actually used precisely this same method - successfully - to manually align my system partition when I was cloning it from HDD to a new SSD.)

Following a hardware upgrade we reinstalled software and attempted to restore data from the old drive now housed in an external caddy. Everything was able to be accessed apart from payroll backups.

The backup payroll files, indeed all the files within the payroll directory can not be moved even using Windows Explorer...the error message "Access Denied Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use" keeps appearing. No other files on the drive seem to be affected.

Is there any way we can change the access rights to this directory? The software in question is Sage Payroll (current version).

Hi gurus,

I've got a problem I can't seem to suss out, and I hope you guys can help.

My Windows dialog boxes are too small to display all the text they contain. And as we know, these verdammt boxes are not resizable. Up to now, this has been a minor annoyance, but now it's a major one: it's keeping me from completing the Vista x64 SP2 patch install.

As you can see in the attachments, the window text is just too big. It overflows the sides of the dialog. And because the SP2 EULA screen requires that you view all its text, and I can't, I never get an active "NEXT" button to proceed with the installation. Changing screen res does not help.

I've tried Personalize > Windows Color and Appearance > Open Classic Appearance Properties to reset the Window Text size, but the option to do this is grayed out. I've tried the registry hack found on this board to try and substitute a smaller font, but no go. I've tried several hackware proggies to try and force unresizeable windows to resize, but no joy there either. I've also tried Chris Pirillo's Vista Font Fix to no avail.

System:
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit, Version 6.0 (Build 6001), Service Pack 1
Dell Studio XPS 435 MT, Core i7 920, 6GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3650 running Catalyst 8.49

Hope someone can figure this out.

I tried to add a registry key, but it didn't work....even after I re-started Outlook7. The only option within an email is to view source, and that only appears to be showing html code.

All I want to see is if the anti-virus we have installed is scanning our incoming emails or not!

Anyone know a quick solution to this? Thanks!

ie i want dir2 to be a a splitting image of dir1

A:Using CMD to move directory contents

you can use robocopy which can be found in the "Windows Resource Kit Tools":
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

I use it to backup a very large folder (several GB) with a script that looks like this:

Code:
@echo off
cd C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools
robocopy origin_path destination_path /SEC /MIR /V /TS /LOG+:f:\Scripts\DCC_Backup_logfile.txt
@echo off
PAUSE
the "/something" triggers I use compares the content of the origin_path and destination_path and replaces those which have been modified.

Hello.
I want to move some files from my C:\ drive to get some space.
I have noticed many large files in a directory called C:\SwSetup.
Judging by the "date accessed" information, it would appear that these
files and directories date back to the original set-up and installation of various
pieces of software on my system.
Would there be any harm in me moving them to another drive?

For example: C:\SwSetup\RoxioCB9 and C:\SwSetup\sp38361

Does software access information in ".cab" files in these directories when in runs?

I assume I will have to everything back if I want to 'uninstall' any of the related applications?

Thank you so much for any help. I hope I am posting in the correct forum.

Generally its unsafe to play with the system settings, if you've done more than one installation on this computer, run a disk cleanup and see if theres any space in the "previous installations" check box.

If you still want to continue with this, SAVE A BACKUP, before you do anything else.

Is there any convenient way to get a list of a directory's contents, the file and subdirectory names? Dir doesn't return sub-directory names and mis-reports file-names that have non-ansi characters in them. The only way I've been able to do this is with a very slow keyboard macro

Not sure what is going on with your computer but dir shows subfolder by name

dir *. /s shows just subfolders by name
dir /s show subfolders and files by name

You are right dir does not like special characters which is when I use explorer to list contents.

I posted my problems with wierd Internet Explorer behavior elsewhere and have still not solve it (inability for another user to get to other web pages via clicking on links).

But, related to that, in my endeavors to fix, I tried reinstalling IE6 and also restored previous restore points. Apparently, one of these attempted fixes left a weird directory on the root directory of C: named e21149c20. This directory includes subdirectories named "common", "sp1", and "sp2", as well as a file named xpsp1hfm.exe (or some similar name).

I have tried endless to remove these with no luck. I keep getting "access denied" messages, even though these directories and their contents to not appear to be write protected.

Does anyone know what these are and are they safe to delete--also how do I delete?

I am a writer and over a period of years I have put snippets of text in small files. Some of these files are duplicates of other files but with a different file name. Some of these files are combinations of other files. No duplicate file names exist in the directory. In all, I have 2700 small files in one directory. All files to be compared are txt files. What I want to do is find the duplicate files and find the duplicate text content of the files. What is the best way to find only original content in each of the files? If necessary, I can collect all the files into one large file but what would I do next? What I am looking for is some kind of automated way to compare the file contents rather than my having to do all of this by hand.

Most file compare utilities only compare file names and if they compare content you do not see the content.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

A:Need to compare contents of files in one directory

You could get a file compare utility like ExamDiff or WinMerge, both are freeware. WinMerge is more powerful, but ExamDiff is easier to work with and for what you're doing it should be fine. It will compare two text files and show you the differences.

I would sort the files by size and then compare the ones that are the same or close in size.

is there a way to capture the directory contents into a text or html file in winxp? i figure cuz the gui is generally html based, the files should be already made somewhere dynamically or something.

how can i do this?

A:capture directory contents to file

For a list of just the directories:
from a cmd prompt in the main directory (the 1 containing the 50 sub-directories) type dir /ad /b>list.txt, this will output the listing to the .txt file
For a list of all the files and directories omit the /ad parameter.

Hope this will help you.

Hello everyone!

I am here because I am wondering if Windows has such thing as the capability of listing a menu of the contents of a folder. For example, I am an ex-MacOS user and in the old days (pre-OSX) there was a program called FreePPP that had a menu item to which you could add applications to. It would simulate what the taskbar does in Windows. Also, the extension gave the ability to the system to "right-click" or "control-click" to list contents of a folder as a menu. There were other programs that would do the same job.

As the MacOS evolved, then OSX brought the dock. With it, any folder that you insert in it becomes a menu, listing the contents. Any folder in it, becomes a submenu, and consecutively, and shortcuts/applications in it; can be launched.

I tried to do the same thing in the Taskbar and no go

I have it in the start menu "All programs" and I click it and opens a list of the contents where I can choose what I want to open. Requires four clicks at least and a hell of a lot of navigation. The above mentioned task, should require no more than two clicks.

This is one of the few features I miss about certain great things the MacOSX has. Can I have a Windows 7 Christmas wish to have it granted? I have looked in the internet extensively for it and there doesn't seem to be an application to do the job. And it doesn't look like the taskbar has those properties currently. Background Info:
I have album artwork displayed for every album/directory in my music directory (D:\Music) by using a folder.ico and a desktop.ini file. This method was used as a work-around to fix the deficiency in Windows Vista and 7 to no longer display front-facing album covers using the folder.jpg file. This work-around looks fantastic and actually looks better than XP because it's borderless. It also has the advantage of staying loaded into memory, which I have plenty of, until I restart the computer, unlike the use of folder.jpg, which has to be reloaded every time the directory is opened and scrolled.

However, when I first open my music folder, it has to load all the artwork and I have to manually scroll through the entire directory until all of the folder.ico files are read. I have a very large library and this takes some time. I can set D:\Music to open at startup, and it will read the folder.ico files for the visible albums/directories, but then I still have to manually scroll after that.

Question:
Is there any way to force Windows to load the folder.ico files for every folder in my D:\Music directory at startup, with no intervention from me?

Desired Result:
When I go to open or scroll through the music directory, all of my album artwork has already been pre-loaded into memory and thus it is a seamless flow of album artwork with no waiting.

Hello,
I have been using Directory List & Print (and Karen's Directory Print) for several years, to print lists of files in various directories (especially media). In order to keep track of all my media files, which are scattered amond numerous drives and many different folders, I create shortcuts for each file, then paste them into a single "master list" folder. This way, I have one place I can quickly turn to for up to date info. Directory List & Print (free version) works quite well for sending the current list of files (actually - list of shortcuts) in the "master folder" to MS Word, for printing and formatting. I just recently tried to sort my file list by date, in order to resolve a problem I was having with keeping track of when certain files were created. When I tried to sort the Directory List & Print order by "date", all files in the master folder were shown as the same date (the current date = 10-20-15), even though each file in the directory shows the actual date the file was originally created. I cannot figure out why this app (Dir ListPrint) assigns the current date to each file, instead of the correct date. I have tried several other third party directory print progams and the result is the same with each. I have also tried the DOS command to create a txt list within the master folder - same result. A:Printing directory contents - File dates displayed wrong

Hmmm............

The Everything search engine will find all files matching your stated search string and then allow you to sort them by creation date.

Below is a screen shot of a bunch of Frank Sinatra mp3s from various folders as searched for in Everything. I then sorted them by "creation time", newest to oldest.

You can also export the search results as a text file.

Or highlight some or all of the results and paste them to some folder--which would copy the actual files, not just their names.

It's a great tool that you might be able to adapt to your purposes.

Setup: Windows 7 X64 Enterprise, no SP1.
Problems:
1) Tried the registry change to clear the offline files cache on c:\windows\csc and move it to d:\csc

http://www.mydigitallife.info/how-to-relocate-or-move-offline-files-client-side-caching-location-in-windows-7-or-vista/ . This doesn't work. Windows simply ignores the reg key "CacheLocation" and post-reboot just recreates c:\windows\csc after
I went through the steps to remove it earlier. Syntax used in the reg key for CacheLocation is \??\d:\csc (I tried with and without the folder created manually).
2) Offlines files when instructed to sync a child folder of a parent drive mapping attempts to sync the entire parent folder. This is really annoying because the parent folder has over 1TB in it.
\\servername\parent\child is right clicked, I choose "always available offline" and I see it start to sync. In the progress bar I can literally see it pulling data like xls and pst files off of the parent folder.

What's puzzling is that others seem to have luck in getting #1 to work so it makes me think I'm screwing up the steps but I've check it and tried it twice now.
Any help would be appreciated.

A:Offline Files Cache location change not working and caching entire parent directory

The default location of the Offline Folders cache is %systemroot%\csc. If you need to move this cache to another location
on your computer for some reason, follow these steps:
1. Set the following REG_DWORD registry key to a value of 1:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC\Parameters\MigrationParamters

Doing this ensures that all items in the cache are migrated

2. Run the Windows Easy Transfer wizard. Once the data has been scanned, a Customize link is displayed. Click this link and
make sure that Windows Settings is checked for all items displayed in the list.

3. Once you have collected the data, set the following String registry key to specify the new cache location:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC\Parameters\CacheLocation

For example, to move the cache to a folder named CSCCache on your D: drive, specify the following value:

\??\D:\CSCCache

4. Now reboot your computer, run the Easy Transfer wizard again and apply the previously gathered files. Then reboot one more
time when prompted by the wizard.

And now the print page shows the long URL in full page width.

I tested with the sign-in URL that you see when you visit gmail.com and it shows the full URL in the center of the page.

Another option is to use the "Print Edit" add-on recommended in the above link. It lets you edit the webpage before printing. So you could try pasting the URL somewhere in the body.

Please forgive me if I am using incorrect terms here. I use Adobe Acrobat/Distiller (Version 5) to convert documents to pdf format. The problem comes when I have a large Excel workbook with 20 or so worksheets (tabs at the bottom of the page). When I try to convert them into pdf (File-Print-Distiller) I get 20 or so files.

First question-Is there a way to convert a multiple worksheet excel file into 1 pdf file? (Without the tedious "insert pages" function I am using right now)

Second question- Is there a way to convert multiple Word documents into 1 pdf file? (Once again without tedious "insert pages" function) Before you ask, no I cannot make all the Word documents into one file.

Third question-If there is no way to do the other two...is there a way to convert multiple adobe pdf into one without "insert pages".

Now since last time I got a bunch of "if it's not broke don't fix it comments" I am posting this statement. "Insert pages" is great and works great to get a couple of pdf files together. Try doing it for over 250 files and see how fun it is.

A:How do I print an entire excel workbook to pdf

If the worksheets are all < 1 page "long", then File -- Print -- Entire Workbook worked for me using CutePDF (can be found on Google).

OpenOffice has "Export to PDF" ; it did handle > page-long sheets for me, but baulked at some print settings, so it could depend on how fancy your sheets are (http://www.openoffice.org/).

>> I cannot make all the Word documents into one file.

Are you saying Insert Subdocument doesn't work in your version of Word?

Hi, I hope someone can answer this question.

I have an extensive MIDI file collection saved to my desktop and want to print the contents of the folder. When I open the folder, it shows the contents IE "misty.mid" but there is no option to print. I have tried contrl. P and also tried to take a screen shot, nothing works. Any suggestions? I hate the idea of having to hand print this whole thing since I have over 1,000 MIDI files. I need to know what is in the folder, on paper, instead of just opening and looking on the computer.
Thanks In Advance!!!!

Hi

All I want to be able to do is put an mp3 disc in and be able to print a list of its contents straight away without a lot of messing around.

Is there an application that can do this?

I wish Media Player did this to start with.

Cheers

I have an HP Deskjet 5550 printer, and when I print a page from a website, even though the whole page shows on the computer screen, when I print the same screen, much of the right hand side is cut off. How can I fix this?

A:Printer doesn't print entire web window

In Internet Explorer, go to File>Page setup and incrementally decrease the margins until it prints the entire page. These settings will affect the margins when printing email from Outlook Express, too.

A single copy of my business cards prints.I want 30 copies to print - the full page.

A:Getting a business card to print entire page

Johnis83 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!Sorry, but this has absolutely nothing to do with HP -- as it is entirely related to whichever app you are trying to use to print the business cards. Typically, folks use a program that understands formatted labels -- and you choose the label format number matching the sheet you are trying to print. Most labeling programs, for example, understand the different Avery label formats. Then, the program will let you either print a single label, or the entire sheet. But ... this is determined ENTIRELY by the labeling program you are using. For help with that program, you need to contact the suppliers of that application.Good Luck

On a whim, I followed this link a friend provided, to add the Print Directory Listing feature in WinXP Pro SP2:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321379

Here's the registry-edit section, with my comments in brackets:

After you follow the steps in the previous sections, Search Companion may start when you double-click a folder instead of the folder being opened. Or, if you have associated other actions with file folders, those actions may be performed instead.
[The action that my system performs is to browse the folder with Irfanview thumbnails. Can't see my document files at all unless I right-click on the folder and choose Open.]

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
1. Start Registry Editor.
[That's Start> Run> regedit.]

2. Locate the Default value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
["Shell" is a folder with additional folders under it. There is nothing labeled Default, and clicking on each folder shows that everything has a value named (Default), so I don't know what this means.]

3. Click Modify on the Edit menu.
[It didn't tell me to CLICK on the Default--whatever that is--to highlight it, so I was just clicking on a folder, in which case there is no Modify on the Edit menu. But if I do click on, for example, the (Default) item in the folder labeled Browse with &Irfanview, I do get a Modify option.]

4. In the Value data box, type:
none
[I went ahead and did that with the Irfanvi... Read more

A:How do I get rid of Print Directory for XP Pro?

2. Locate the Default value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

All right, I went back in to the registry key, and this time I did see a Default file when I clicked on the Shell folder. I modified its value to "none" and now my folders open correctly.

I also tried running it again on a smaller directory, by right-clicking on a folder and choosing Print Directory Listing. This time, instead of hanging, it ran and completed---but didn't give me a listing. It just ran and quit. Is it supposed to create it in Notepad, or am I not using it correctly?

One of the Notepad windows displays the usual "volume in drive C has no label," but no actual errors appear, at least not long enough for me to see them. Would this be logged anywhere?

I'm still inclined to want to get rid of this and find a better tool for the job... but have no idea how to go about it, since the dialog won't give me the Remove button.

Cheers!

Maybe it already exists in Windows, or perhaps there is a utility.

I'd like to print out directory structures and the files inside them for a group of files. I want to be able to print out the files that are on back up discs, that way easy to find files I need.

A:Print out directory Structures?

Here is a freeware program that is quite good:

http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptdirprn.asp

and one that is not free but equally as good:

http://www.galcott.com/dp.htm

and if you like to tinker with your system:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article01-451

The last one contains Registry Editing. If you choose this, make sure to backup your Registry before attempting.

I need to know how I can print the list of files included in any folder from the folder screen in Windows XP. Thanks!

A:print directory file list

There is a way using a command prompt... but not through windows as far as I know.

To use the command prompt method, go to Start -> Run -> 'cmd' (without the quotes of course) then navigate to the directory you want. Now type:

dir > list.txt

This will output the list of the files in the directory to a file called list.txt. Close the command prompt (type exit), open the text file and print.

Hi there,
Im having trouble printing multiple MODI (Microsoft Office Document Image) files in a specific order.

At the moment I am having to open one file in MODI and then inserting the others one by one as it wont let me insert multiples.

Ok so is there a way I can....
1). create a single .mdi file from the MODI writer.... i.e. concatenate my the image writing into one file, so they start in order.

or

2). Have a script which would insert all the single mdi files automatically in the order they are in directory

or

3). Print the seperate files together but in order

All the files i want to print are in a single directory and are named as such...

file.mdi, file0001.mdi, file0002.mdi, file0003.mdi..... and so on.

Any help would be good.
Thanks

How do I perform a directory print of a folder that gives me the options I want to see. I want to see the File Name, Dimensions (Height/Width), and Vertical/Horizontal Resolution of my images contained within. No program nor context menu edit I've come across allows for these options. Is this possible in Windows 7? Programs like Karen's is great though it does not give me the options I want nor allows me to add them.
Windows 7 allows me to view this information via the Details View toolbar. I have to believe there is a method to print these details to text. Thank you for reading.

A:Print FULL details of directory

I can provide more details if needed.
