Windows Media Encoder doesn't work at home, does at work

Q: Windows Media Encoder doesn't work at home, does at work

I cannot get Windows Media Encoder 9 to work at all at home, but I have no problems with it at work, so I know I'm not trying to do something with it that it can't handle.

At home, every time I try to convert either an AVI or a VOB to WMV, either using the wizard or the custom settings, it lets me get through it all and then, when it starts trying to encode, it throws up the message:
"Windows Media Encoder has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. ..."

It never gives me any more information than this, just crashes and closes. I've tried repairing it through the control panel, as well as completely uninstalling it and reinstalling it, but it hasn't helped.

At home I'm running Windows XP Media Center. At work, where I've never had it crash, I'm running Windows XP Professional. Is there something in Media Center that causes it to crash? Is there any patch I can download or thing I can do to get it to work on my home computer?

Thanks for your help.

Preferred Solution: Windows Media Encoder doesn't work at home, does at work

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows Media Encoder doesn't work at home, does at work

I'm currently having the same problem . I open the .vob file set the output folder , settings etc etc . just as it was about to start converting , WME just stops and crashes . I use windows xp home edition so if your company's xp professional can make it work im thinking it is something in the professional edition which allows it to work not something in our edition that doesnt allow it to work. Are there any alternatives for encoding a video? i dont have much cash right now so i was hoping i might find some freeware alternatives . thanks

I was trying to install Microsoft Screen Reader. That WMEncoder would not do a complete install. It would put the item in my Remove Programs list, and there was a file in my C/Program Files but it wasn't completing. When I went to Remove Programs to uninstall it I'd get a notice that "this only applies to products that are installed." Now my Windows Media Player doesn't work so I'm thinking that somehow something necessary got removed when I was messing with this Screen Reader installation.

Can someone help, please!

I'm not great at troubleshooting but here are some alternatives that I think work better.Winamp will suddenly stop playing MP3's

I have an eMachines tower legally running Win XP Home SP3. Until a month or two ago, Windows Media Player ran just fine. Then WMP announced that an upgrade was available, and I decided to take it. There was something about initializing the upgrade that I didn't like, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled WMP from my original XP disk. The reinstallation went without a hiccup, but WMP refuses to work. With MP3s associated with WMP, if I double-click an MP3, WMP appears to want to run--that is, it initializes something--but nothing else happens. WMP is not listed with my Currently Installed Programs.

I also have the Quick Time Player, and I changed the file association to run MP3s with Quick Time, which works okay. Incidentally (or not?), MP3 files still display with WMP icons, even though MP3s are associated with and automatically play with Quick Time.

I'd really like to get WMP back. Can somebody help me make it happen?

Try updating your WMP. the latest codec pack is here.

I use WinAmp for music, you can get that here

i've got the windows media player 10 with all the codecs installed but i can't play any music or film. it appears an error-message saying that i don't have the necessary codecs to play. i've already tried to installed it again and download more codecs but the problem remains.

does anybody know how to solve the problem??

A:windows media player doesn't work

Stop using crappy Microsoft software and download something decent and free like winamp at uh... winamp.com

If that doesn't work you still haven't got the right codec (codecs are shared between any media players, it could be MP10 is buggy, and doesn't pick it up)

If your media has an avi extension it might most probably be a divx compression which you get at uh.... divx.com

If all of the above doesn't work you should give me some more info....
1) What are the extensions of the media that doesn't play?
2) Is it all media that's not playing or only certain media files?
3) Does your sound work in general?

Hi to everyone who reads this.

I can start Windows Media Center up, but when I choose to show my Pictures or something else, Windows Media Center suddenly stops working and the program closes. No direct error messages shown.

Afterwards my HP Machine looks for a solution, but the only option revealed here is to do an update, but my PC is fully updated.

Is it possible to do a complete reinstall of Windows Media Center, without doing a complete PC reinstall?

Or does somebody have a better alternative?

Best regards Carlo

A:Windows Media Center doesn't work anymore...

I am not sure if there is a way to reinstall just media center, But you could try to do a system restore or a repair install of vista.

Hello, first off i would like to thank you for taking the time to help me.. really appreciate it.

Like the title says my WMP 11 hasn't been working ever since i did some registry cleaning which i know was a hell of a wrong mistake but i didn't know about how bad it is back then. I tried to install it again but the result was same it wouldn't work. When i decide to play a file in WMP the mouse gets that clock thingie for a sec as it was going to play the file normally but nothing happens the WMP doesn't run nor do i get any error message. I recently did the mallware check up and all scans proved to be clean also the pc is working if i can say perfectly.

I'm so sorry if i forgot to mention something. Thank you again so much for offering help to everyone in need.

I don't need help urgently I'm sure there are people with way bigger problems.

ive read a lot of things about media player but none of them have anything to do with my problem

you see, when i first reformatted, i installed xvid codecs and i could watch videos from websites like gprime and spikedhumor just fine, but after i restarted cause of the other drivers and such i was installing, media player wouldn't play anything correctly, the color was distorted.

now this wouldnt bother me so much if i could use my media player (Media Player Classic) to view videos that load from websites, but i can't, so i was wondering if you guys could help me fix it.

now the same thing happened with media player classic after i restarted, but at least MPC has a section where i can choose what codecs it should use in order to render video. is there such a section in windows media player?

I'm running Windows XP. In Windows Media Player I used to be able to listen to any of the free radio stations that are listed under the Radio tab. Now when I click on them a dialog box with a globe progress bar flash on the screen but the station never plays.

The stations that are mark "try free today" still play. Are all the stations only for pay now?

I tried un-installing and reinstalling media player, both from the Windows disk and downloading from Microsoft but to no avail.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

From what i have heard, the media player no longer supports radio listening. You can always try.. but i was told that it doesn't now. You may want to just use an actual radio/cds. Sorry that wasn't that much help... I will try it on my computer and tell you how it goes, shortly.

It will not even let me connect, sorry. I wish ya luck though lol

Have you checked your firewall settings ?.
Take a look and see if you can add WMP to the exceptions list.
Also , in WMP options, check that the option to update from the web is enabled.

For the last few months, I've been having a problem with my internet connection. It works fine when I'm home, but if I leave for the day and come back, I usually (but not 100% of the time) need to reset my modem before I can reconnect to the Internet. I never have this problem if I'm just at home -- that is, my Internet doesn't cut out once I'm connected.

A couple points worth mentioning:

This affects both my computer and my phone, so I'm assuming the problem must NOT be with either.

I was having issues with my previous modem (a Motorola SB5101), and Comcast came by and left a different one with me (CISCO DPC3008). I have had this problem with both modems. Therefore, I think that the problem probably isn't the modem, either.

Any idea what could be causing this -- and, more importantly, what I can do to fix it? Thanks for any ideas, suggestions, or feedback!

My attempts over the years at figuring out networking issues usually leaves me completely confused, frustrated and dismayed at trying to get things to work. Anyways, I moved into a place that is all wired up for CAT 5. My understanding is that, for instance, if I plug the ethernet output on my cable modem into any of the jacks, then I will be able to plug a wireless router, or computer to another jack somewhere else. Here is what the box looks like, and I have NO idea where to go from here. It appears that all the cat5 cables link into a router.. or is it a 'switchboard?'

I hope these help. There are some cat5e (???) wires that are white and not connected to anything as you can see in the pic with my hand in it.

Check for possible malware infection. Next, check your "hosts" file (\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts), the content of that file should only be ONE line (unless you manually put another line there). If that file have extra lines, then there is 90% chance of your computer is infected by some malware. I personally will suggest to unplug the system disk, mount it on another clean computer and scan it over there. Or you might want to try AVG's Live Antivirus CD.

After upgrading to SP2 about a month ago so I could take finals on my computer at school, i noticed that my computer wouldn't boot up in safe mode (i just get a blank dark screen and i can hear the computer doing something but giving it a reasonable amount of time it doesn't progress from that screen). It didn't concern me because normal mode was working and i was able to take my tests. But now I want to get to the bottom of this. I delayed getting sp2 because i had a feeling it would mess up my computer. (i've had other problems too with visual skins but i was able to resolve those). If it matters, i ran a scan of my system with spyware doctor and it said i had a trojan.dialer and needed to boot in safemode to get rid of it. When I tried, it wouldn't load. Oh, btw, any way to get rid of that trojan.dialer without using safemode?

Hi guys,

I use the Vista Home Basic, SP2 with HP EliteBook 6930p. After several months of working perfectly fine, one day the computer started working really badly. Firstly, it either took ages to logon successfully or the computer just stopped at the logon screen. One day, it suddenly worked fine until now (I have no idea why). Secondly, once the logon is successful, the computer cannot work properly in normal mode. The computer often stops responding during start-up. If the start-up is fine, the computer stops responding after several minutes or if I try to open any program.

Now, I can only use in safe mode. It's really annoying.

(it was fine after the installation of windows xp until about week ago) when you turn it on, sometimes randomly, windows will show that there are no cd drives, the sound driver has an exclamation mark as well as the usb HUB. the only way to fix it is to uninstall it and reboot windows and windows finds the new hardware, installs it, and everything works. for a little while. then same thing will happen. its like windows is just losing driver files. any suggestions?

i thought it could be an IRQ conflict but i thought with that the devices wouldn't work period. i'd prefer not to reinstall windows or format but if i have to i will.

Hello, I don't know if this is the right place to put this or not as i don't know whether this is a driver problem or soundcard issue, so i thought i would just put it in here...

So, I recently re-installed vista ultimate on my PC. Since then, when i pause a song on any media player i have tried (songbird, windows media player, windows media centre) when i try to play again after leaving it for a minute or so, the song doesn't play and the program crashes. Once that has happened, the sound on my PC doesn't work at all and I have to reboot. I have soundMAX integrated digital audio, which i know isn't great but i have had this PC for quite a while and it has never done this before. I haven't changed any specs, all i have done is reinstalled vista ultimate. I have tried to update the drivers for the soundMAX but it says they are already up to date. Any ideas?

hi please try updating your drivers from the mfr website support page windows often says your drivers are up to date however that is not always the case and it is better to do the updates from the mfr of the mobo or card

basicall, my WHOLE problem is mentioned in my title of the board.

it's actually my mom's problem.

i re-installed windows from scratch to see if that fixed it.

but the modem works FINE in XPHome, but then seems to disable itself in XP Pro.

Dell tech support cna't figure this out.

i don't know what to do with my mom's new PC

she's been running it fine on XP home

but when she upgrades to Pro, all hell breaks loose.

We use a broadband ISP (direcway....ewww i hate it, but it gets the job done when you live in hicksville usa....lol)

but you need to activate it (and activate windows) via a modem..and we use dialup as a backup ISP.

my mom can run fine in Home, but she want's Pro to work.

My problem is that I cannot access the internet through my LAC. I enable the connection and it will connect and send packets, but will not receive any packets. I have no problems enabling my wireless connection and connecting to the internet. The wireless does like to disconnect and reconnect about 3 or 4 times an hour which is another problem I have. I believe this LAC problem started around the same time I was trying to get shared music between my computers on iTunes. I was trying to allow for connection on port 3689, but everything I did was unsuccessful. Any suggestions for any of these problems I'm having?
