I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

when i wanted to install windows 7 to replace my windows vista i made a couple of back up CDs for the image files i have. the funny thing is, i used these image files regularly with my vista and there was no problem.
after the installation the OS recognizes the disk and knows that the disk is full(only 500mg free out of the 4.2 gigs) it also knows the name i gave to the CD but there is only one small problem: when i open the CD there is nothing in there. no file, no ISO, no nothing. so when i open the folder the system treats the CD as if it's empty and tells me to drag the folders i want burned.

am i doing something wrong here? is there an update to fix this?

A:burned CD bugs Vista vs 7

Try using Imgburn. Open the disc in Read Mode. See if it recognizes files. It sounds like Vista had a driver for a file system type that W7 does not.

Hi there,

I have burned many DVD (data) on my XP before I switch a computer. Now that I have a Vista x64, the CD drive won't read them. If I use ISOBuster I can see the track and extract them. But if I use Windows Explorer it will prompt me to "prepare blank disc"! Any help? I already finalize the disc and confimred it. Do a hardware diagnostic check and turns out nothing went wrong.

By the way, how can I make Vista not look for application if I insert other CD. (By that I mean just open the CD rather than look for autoplay, I already disable autoplay.)

It could be the brand of disc that your Vista machine doesn't like. I had to change brands when I got my Vista, the CD's I used on my XP and WinME machine would read but I couldn't write to them in Vista.

Data DVD+R's burned in XP are seen as DVD+RW in Vista. When I right-click the DVD drive, Vista prompts me to format the "DVD+RW", and I cant even open it or explore it without the format prompt. In XP the disk is read properly and works fine. Any ideas how to resolve this?

OK, so I burned a DVD data disk in Vista before I upgraded my laptop.

Dropped said disk into the drive to restore files, and huh? Shows as empty! I drop said DVD into an XP machine, all is there. OK, I am confused.

The media is TDK DVD-R. I have never had trouble with this media on any of my machines.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I burned a DVD of some avi files using the burn to disc feature within Vista. It all burned, everything golden. I put them up for a while, then downloaded a program to burn them to DVD to watch on a player. Put the disc in and a message popped up that I can't remember now, but basically, it's acting as if my disc isn't finished.

The disc isn't full which is why I think it's thinking it's unfinished, but is it? How do I finish it. And I have this disc and one backup disc (which I need to try) but the files have been deleted from the hard drive I burned them off of.

Guidance please?

I burned a DVD-R (photos) on my XP Desktop (XPS 400) and tried to open it in
Vista on my E6500 laptop. No dice. In "My Computer" it showed a folder
with nothing in it!

When I burned it on my desktop I did the quick format (sonic DLA asked to format), added the files
and then Finalized the disk. I tried it on a another laptop

What do I need to do?

I am trying to open jpeg image files from a CD on my new Vista PC laptop and it is not working. I think I burned them on a Mac - there is a small red Apple icon on the disc drive icon.

I can see the jpeg files in the disc folder but can't open them by double-clicking the jpeg icons - nothing happens.

I can't import them into Windows Photo Gallery.

When I drag and drop them into Photoshop, it just opens blank white jpeg of the same dimensions.

If I try to open them from within Photoshop, I get the error message: "A device attached to the system is not functioning".

I can't copy the files onto my computer.

I can open the images in Windows XP and Windows 2000, just not Vista. I assume the problem is because the discs were burned on a Mac (I could be wrong).

Any ideas? Is there any way around this? Help!

My family takes a ton of pictures. So many that I often burn a bunch to a few CDs and clear them off of my computer.
I've come across an issue where Vista will not show the contents of these burned CDs. I believe they are all .jpg files. They show fine on my XP machine (a basic Dell Dimension desktop) but on my two Vista machines (brand new desktop and laptop) it shows either some of the files or none at all, even though it displays the correct amount of space taken up on the cd itself.
I burned these CDs with the basic windows 'drag into a folder to be burned' option. Is there anything I can do on my Vista machines to be able to view these picture files? I know I can use the Easy Transfer option, which is all well and good. My concern, though, is when others want to show me pictures. For example, if a friend stops by after vacation. I don't want to have to keep the old XP machine around just for the sake of being able to view a burned cd.

Hey. Here is my scenario.

I'm buying a new computer, and it obviously comes with Vista. My current computer is running XP. When I get the new computer, I want to use my current XP hard drive on it. My question is, will I be able to save files onto the new Vista drive while running XP?

Thanks for any help in advance.

A:XP compatible with Vista?

Hey nnnever,

I have heard that running XP and Vista on the same computer can cause problems. One that I had when trying to do this is that when you boot to XP it deletes the system restore files.

And another thing. I don't think that you can just pull out the XP hard drive and put it in the new computer and expect it to work.

I have Vista and I use Microsoft Virtual Machine to run Windows XP inside Windows Vista.

You could just get rid of the problem altogether and swipe the drive that has Windows Vista on it and then just use XP.

I have a laptop with Vista 32 and just bought another laptop with Vista 64.

Will both of the above OSs use the same software?

If a program is Vista compatible?..does that mean it will run on either of the above machines?

Must a program to run on Vista x64 state that it is Vista x64 compatible?

A:What does Vista Compatible Mean?

Hello cyclone3211, and welcome to the vista forums

Vista X64 will run most if not all 32Bit applications, As it will not run 16Bit applications you may have problems with some (Very) old games or with the 16 Bit installer used for some older applications.

If you purchase an application which states it is Vista Compatable you should have no problems installing and using it

I have a HP Laserjet 3015 Fax Scanner Printer. Ive lost my driver disk so I used the HP website printer driver. The driver works fine for printing but does not support the scanner or fax functions. HP said that these functions are not compatible with Vista. Is there a generic driver that I can use or can you suggest something that may help me not to need 2 printer hooked up to the computer?

The other printer is a canon PIXMA MP800 (I need this for the Scanning functions - MP Navigator)

A:Not Vista compatible

Most Photo editing programs can access scanners. Since HP's Twain driver does not work in Vista, it's still possible that Windows WIA driver 'might' work. (for scanning)
In Irfanview, you would go to 'File', 'Select Twain Source'. If a WIA driver shows up, select it. Next, click 'File', 'Acquire/Batch Scanning'.

Other Photo editing programs should be similar. I don't know if will work, but worth a try. If you don't have any editing programs, Irfanview can be downloaded here:http://www.irfanview.com/
It's small, fast, and free.

I just bought a HP TouchSmart 64-bit computer, running Vista Home Premium 64.

My old computer had Windows XP and I have discovered that my Palm Tungsten E is not compatible with the 64-bit format, and it doesn't look like Palm is going to step up to the plate with new drivers.

Soooo..... I am shopping for a new PDA. I don't want a smartphone. Tried a couple, and didn't like them, and didn't need the internet access 'to go'. I use Microsoft Office 2007, so the PDA needs to be able to sync with Outlook 2007 (contacts and calendar), and download Word documents.

Can anyone recommend a PDA for me? I might need to go back a couple of generations (after paying for my new PC) and look at a used one, so please specify which models will work for me. I don't use the 'graffiti' method of data input, so a PDA with a QWERTY keyboard (provided it is small enough to put in my purse/tote) or stylus would work for me.

Thanks so much (in advance) for your help.

A:Looking for PDA compatible with Vista 64

I know that you do not want a smart phone, but the pda market seems to be slowing down as the smart phone market keeps growing. I would go to some stores where they have working smartphone models and just play with them.

I have just helped a friend to install Vista (64 bit) on a new computer . She previously had windows XP Home. I have checked that they are plugged in ok and enabled.

A:speakers/ Vista compatible?

The physical speakers has nothing to do with the upgrade to Vista just as switching gas has nothing to do with tires.

What might be happening is that the audio drivers need to be updated. You'll have to find the 64-bit audio drivers for her soundcard.

Hi there, just had a quick question i was asked the other day and was not sure about the answer. I was asked if there was any way to use a store bought program that is only compatible up to XP on a vista OS. I did not get which program it was, but i figured that with the knowledge base you would be able to munipulate the program to make it work with Vista. Any ideas?

A:XP program compatible with Vista?

Vista has some compatibility mode options that may help.

It could just be that when the application was published, produced, and packaged, Vista may have still been in the works.

This does not necessarily mean that the application won't run on Vista. It just means that it was not designed with Vista in mind.

The only way you can tell is to try it, or do a Google Search for a Windows Vista Program Compatibility Database.

I am looking at purchasing a Gateway GT5662 Desktop with a Vista OS. My problem is much of my software is not compatible with Vista and runs great with my XP OS. I have went to the several of the vendor sites to see if they have drivers and so far so good. The one I am having difficulty with is the motherboard. If someone could give me a little direction on where to look or has information concerning this it would be appreciated. Well, what type of OS do you have (OEM or Retail)? Did it come with the PC? If so, you cannot transfer it, so you are looking at buying a new license.

As to XP support ... I cannot find the 5662 on the Gateway site, but the 5674 (same processor) does seem to have a lot of XP drivers for download.

I've been working fine with Vista Home Premium with the two adapters shown in the attachment. But note that the second one is an integrated one, so you're probably not interested in that one.

Even though my gamble has paid off I don't recommend the Airlink101 unless you get it at a bargain price. Partly because it is USB but also because it is draft 1 'N.' I got lucky--it's working fine with my draft 2 'N' router, connecting consistently at a nominal 270 Mbps.

If you get 'N' make sure it is draft 2. Almost any 'G' adapter with a Vista driver should be fine.

We recently got a new Compaq computer with Vista OS, Trend Micro AntiVirus 2007 and Webroot Spy Sweeper. When I suggested to the salesman my intention of also downloading the free Zonealarm firewall, which we had on our old computer with XP for 7 years, he discouraged it saying it would conflict and cause problems, reassuring me that he'd take care of everything... Well, I'm not sure he did--it doesn't appear I have any firewall protection on this computer, and that makes me uneasy. Could I have some feedback from all of you about this so I can rest assured that our computer is adequately protected or do something to get it that way--and go back to sleeping at night.

Vista has a pretty good firewall already included, you probably really don't need anything more. Also, you most likely have a broadband router offering an additional firewall layer.

I've recently been considering to purchase an actual soundcard instead of the Realtek onboard chip I got. Currently its this 'High Definition Audio'. I used to work on a laptop with a similair soundcard in it, but that was on Windows XP SP2. Where it actually provided some fun things like a graphic equalizer. Nowadays I'm using a computer with Vista and sadly it's lacking that equalizer.

Recently I bought some very nice headphones so I was thinking to get a soundcard with it which would match the headphones in quality. So I've been looking around and noticed a lot of Creative X-Fi cards. I figured it'd be an idea to purchase the 'Xtreme Gamer' edition of it but it also appears many people got issues with the drivers from Creative for Vista? Read a lot of reviews from people who weren't satisfied with it.

I was hoping maybe these forums could help me out in advising before actually spending money. Things I'd like would be:

-Good quality Soundcard
-Compatible and functional drivers for Vista 64bit
-Not toooo pricy
-Additional software for a graphic equalizer or similair, perhaps bass enhancing/boosting options

My apologies if I'm asking for way too much ^^

A:Looking for a Vista compatible soundcard

Hi Igsaa, Welcome to the Forums

I'm running Realtek drivers on Vista x86 and it comes with Realtek Audio manager which gives all sorts of extras including equalisation not sure if this is available with the x64 driver (or codec) you may want to check you have the latest drivers before you buy a new card. also If you right click on the speaker icon in the notification area and click playback devices you may find extra options there. It may well be that x64 is not yet supported as well as x86 but may be worth a try

Hey, all. I'm starting to get machines on my bench - finally - that have one version of Vista or another installed. When I "clean-up" a machine, I use CCleaner, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot S&D and AVG free. I set these up so they don't all load at startup but have to be lauched by the user.

Are these programs compatible with Vista? Or are there other apps that are - free first of all - and better to use with Vista? Thanks!

A:Solved: Vista compatible?

Found out that the current versions of each works fine with Vista. Does the fact that a user can't do a specific search for video files in Vista bother anyone else? I "clean-up" used machines for re-sale and, as you can imagine, there are often times various video files which are...inappropriate...to leave on the machine. I know I can search by file extension, but it was nice in XP that a user could search specifically for video files.

Hi. . .

Some 32-bit (x86) apps simply cannot run under x64 which may be the case here. I can also tell you that some of the SIMS programs cause problems under Vista x86 as well as I have some problems here with them when the kids run them.

I suggest that you check two areas within Vista for clues:

START | type wercon.exe into the Start Search box | right-click on wercon.exe that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | view "See Problems to Check". This will usually tell you if the program is non-compatible or if there were problems during installation.

? The Event Viewer -
START | type eventvwr into the Start Search box | right-click on eventvwr.exe that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | view the various logs starting with the Administrative logs.

Look through the log specifically for red errors and yellow warnings noting the date and time of the system freeze.

Good Luck to you.

I've just recieved a new computer, and on setting it up I discover that my firewall of choice (Zonealarm) does not support Vista 64(Home Premium)

Does anyone know a good free firewall that works on 64-bit (im currently using the Windows Firewall)?

Thanks and Merry Christmas to you all!

A:64-Bit Vista Compatible Firewall

Comodo Personal Firewall is one, Agnitum Outpost Firewall 2008 is another. I guess it's up to you to decide whether they're good or not.
