Q: Offline Folder sync issue, Win 7 Client Server 2003 Flie Server.


I am having an issue with offline files created offline syncing back to the server. I have set up a network share to be available offline on a client computer. All files are available offline without issue. Here is the issue however. If I set the folder to work offline any file I create in the folder when it is offline just disappears when the folder comes back online, there are no conflicts or sync failures reported in sync center. If I create a new folder offline the folder does sync back to the server. Any changes made to an existing file are also replicated back to the server once the share is back online. So the issue is only with newly created files when the share is offline. I have not been able to replicate this error on any other file server in our environment, However I have recreated the issue with multiple shares with multiple Win 7 clients on this file server.

Steps taken so far.

Checked and reset permission levels on the share.
Recreated new shares from scratch for testing.
Disabled and enabled offline files on the client computer and cleared the offline cache.
Check various registry entry settings.
Disabled cashing on the File server.
Tested with XP the issue does not exist with XP.

I have spent hours researching this error online to no avail.

The clients are running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit
The File server is Server 2003 Standard 32 bit with SP2

Any help or ideas would be most welcome.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

I've seen the complaints about this problem but with no clear resolution. There are some hot fixes listed that may help, updating to Windows 7 SP1 is supposed to help in some cases but nothing seems for certain.

No way for me to recreate this problem but apparently others have the same problem.

i have the server with windows 2003 SP1 and i executed replication active directory, domain controller on the new server, as i have two servers. all expect one client computer work ok.onthe problematically computer is with the windows me.
problem is:
when i shut down old server,the computer with win me drop out from domain and he don't see new server.when i power on old server the client computer work ok.i deinstalled the win me on this computer and i installed to him win xp pro but problem is same. this computer don't see new server and he don't see others client computers in network.
what i do?
i tryed to make new user account but nothing i can't because of this computer don't see new server.
on client computer light green indicator on network adapter (Realtek 8139d) all the time.
i use commands: ping with the ip address of server, with the name of server nothing, ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew, ipconfig /flushdns, ipconfig /registerdns.

I'm guessing this is a network issue...it may not be.

We have several HP 4345 MFPs. They all have "scan to network folder" enabled. They were easy to set up and have been working fine.

In May we upgraded/migrated to Windows 2003 servers. All these MFPs were moved, settings changed, and again have been working fine.

This week...for some reason...none of them can scan to a network folder anymore. They are all still printing and emailing, but cannot "find" the network folder to send scans to.

I can ping the printer, the WINS server is set right. The printer uses a generic userid and when you sign on to a computer using that id, you can get to the shared folder used for scanned files. So, the access is good, permissions are right.

All these printers are getting the same error, even though the all scan to different folders on the same server. The server they scan to was rebooted on Sunday night...Monday was the first day none of them could access the shared folders any more. I cannot figure out what happened. Nothing else was changed, just a reboot.

Any ideas?

hmmm... now that sounds familiar. I don't have the solution for you but I have the same problem with a canon imagerunner scanning to a 2003 server. Spent a couple of hours at it, very simple feature but the server wouldn't allow it. Had to scan to a computer based print server and setup scan to email for the time being.

Had there been any microsoft updates that came down from microsoft before the reboot of the server? Is this a 2003 server? sp1 or sp2? Firewall didn't come on did it?

I work at a tiny school which has no IT support. After a power cut, students are unable to log in to their individual users due to time being out of sync with server. I don't have info on local login info for these computers. Running XP. I can log in to server computer. Please help!

So the server date and time are correct? Are all computers affected or only one? How do you have the server password but not the local admin account for the workstations? There must be an IT department or IT contractor/firm somewhere for the school that you can contact for the credentials or for assistance.

We're in a domain at work and a user have a folder on the server that he usually syncs with from his computer. The problem is that when I right click on the folder and choose "syncronize" it gives me "permission error".

Since user has been migrated to Vista Enterprise, offline files have not been functioning correctly. It appears to ONLY be that way for newly created files and folders. Sync log indicates that "the files are in use by another system."

All other users syncing to the same server are fine.

I've disabled Indexing, but that did not take care of it.
I've also googled the heck out of this. Nothing worked.

If I go to the actual server location and sync from there, it works without issue, but not the other way. There's a similar error for every created file or folder.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was at a client's site working on Routering and Remote Access and DHCP (trying to get a VPN user on the network) when all the screens popped up with an alert that the mapped drives were no longer available and people began telling me that they couldn't print. I checked and all the network shares, printers, and other resources coming from the 2003 server were all gone. All the services on the server (DNS, File Sharing, Print Sharing, Terminal Services, etc.) were running but didn't show up on the network. Since the network is not running on DHCP, and all the clients had their own static ips, they were still able to go online and see each other on the network. The server; however, was a different. It was the only machine that couldn't be seen on the network. It couldn't go online. And while it could ping all other machines and get a response it could not ping anything on the net. I have no idea what happened. Can anyone suggest what might have happened? I've tried everything. I'm so completely out of ideas at this point. Any kind of insight would be greatly appreciated. Below is just some of the simple things I've already tried.

- Checked networking hardware
No problems with any layer 1 devices. NICS, wires, switches were all fine.

- Ping the server from the workstations.
The server was able to get a response from the workstations without any problems and vice versa. However I could not pring any websites (ie www.apple.com)

I currently have a Win Server 2003 of which I was running XP's on for 5 years with no latency issues while logging in. I just upgraded the CLIENT PC's to Windows 7. I MAPPED the drives to each CLIENT but after the login name and password are entered the time it takes to MAP the drives is at a minimum of 1 minute. Before they mapped in seconds and these CLIENT computers are much faster then what I had in the XP's. Any suggestions? I have already tried to "relax" the security settings on the CLIENT computer but to no avail. Should I try SHARED FOLDERS instead, but if that's the case I have a NETWORK software that all the CLIENTS use off the server. Plus we save ALL work to the server which gets backed up nightly, so all the EXCEL 2013 files need to be accessed from each CLIENT to the SERVER. Again, my problem is lying with the LATENCY on logon....after I open the programs and the drives are mapped the computers run very fast. Ideas?

I'm having difficulty getting my PC into a new domain - I've setup a Server 2003 box and can ping the workstation from the server, but cannot ping the other way around, and am unable to join the PC into the domain. A pretty fundamental problem I would say! Maybe I missed something when setting up the server?

I built a small SBS 2003 domain for a customer a few months ago and thought I would take advantage of my Technet sub and build a 2003 network so I can test stuff etc. But I cannot get the damn thing setup! Grrrrrrr!!!!

Hi all,

I am the 'administrator' of a small Windows Small Business Server 2003 network which comprises 1 Server (1 NIC) and 8 Clients. One of the client computers failed and I had to run a diagnostic on the components which meant testing each i.e. M/b, Video, CPU Hd etc. It transpired that on this Client the PSU was the problem so I installed a new PSU, rebuilt the Client and connected it to the network and restarted it.

Everything started OK except I could not connect to the network. I tried to 'Join a domain' via My Computer, Properties, Computer Name and Change and putting in the Domain name of the server.

I receiver the 'Error' message:-

An error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain ABCD.CO.UK.

The error was: "The requested address is not valid in its context." (error code 0x00002741 WSAEADDRNOTAVAIL)

The query was for the SRV record for_ldap_tcp.dc_msdcs.ABCD.CO.UK

So there you are, the full 'Error' message. I have so far been unable to get the Client computer to connect to the Win SBS 2003 Server but there is one thing that may be relevant, I did attach the HD to another Client pc to confirm it was OK so could this have reset something on the HD which has stopped it connecting to the Server?

Any help on this would be gratefully accepted?

p.s. Hope this is not to long winded...

The first thing to check with everything related to Active Directory: is the DNS set up correctly? Make sure that the computer in question has the SBS machine as its DNS server.

Hi All,
We have a 2003 exchange server on the network and PC running XP Pro with 2003 Office Professional installed. There are about 50 PC's on the network.

The exchange server can be pinged from the PC

One PC/username in particular is not connecting to the exchange server. When I arrived at the PC Outlook was showing Offline and when I went to put it online it asked for a username and password to connect to the exchange server. Even after entering this info it wasn't connecting.

I checked on the PC to see if I could connect to the server and view the mailbox via Oulook Web Access using his username and password. This worked OK.

I deleted the outlook account and tried to create a new one for the same user. After I type in the server name and username and click on "check Name" I get the following pop-up: "The name could not be resolved. The operation failed".

Then I logged onto the same PC with my username and password and created an outlook account for my email ID. This worked no problem and I was able to connect to the server and download the emails into Outlook.

Thinking that the PC and Outlook are OK and there is an issue with this particular persons profile I went to a different PC on the network and using this persons username logged into a PC. I was able to create an Outlook profile for them on a different PC and it worked without an issue.

So I am a bit confused......

Okay let me give you all the facts up until about 6 months we ran hardcoded PC's across the board. We then got more and more laptops and are finding it easier to now run DHCP. One issue I have is we are running DHCP off a Cicso router and not off the Windows 2003 server. Also remember we have a bunch of subnets as each location is on its own vlan (while this does not matter the same problem is happening with the local LAN with the hosting servers).

I just now went into DNS and noticed that our records are not being updated within DNS. We had some records that are in our forward lookup zones that were 3 months old + that have no computername any longer even on the network. In the reverse lookup zones there is more of the same where we have multiple records with the same IP.

This is happening in both forward and reverse lookup zones and is on 2 different DNS servers. Now scavenging was set for the forward lokup zones for 7 days abut the reverse lookup zone was NOT enabled. We went ahead and enabled it and then I did a forced Scavenge Stale resource records on both servers at the same time.

This did part of what I wanted but did not fix the entire problem. In the forward lookup zones the A records that were stale are now gone (at least the main ones that caused me to notice the problem to begin with). In the reverse lookup zones there are still a TON of duplicates - PTR records for 2 different PC's on the same IP and PTR records for 1 PC on 2 different IP's

I am having the same problem in my environment with my reverse lookup zones. I have duplicate PTR records and scavenging does not seem to be working for the reverse lookup zones. I am at the point now where I am considering deleting my reverse lookup zone and recreating. I just have to answer a few questions about how I am going to recreate the reverse lookup entries that were created from manual forward entries. I would hate to have to do that part manually.

At any rate, I believe I can at least speak to your question regarding a Cisco device being used for dynamic DNS.

You're Windows 2000/XP clients should register their forward lookup name themselves. The DHCP server registers the PTR records on the client’s behalf. The client has the option of requesting to update both records; however, it is only responsible for actually updating the forward lookup zone. The reverse lookup zone in a Microsoft scenario is always updated by the DHCP server.

I have not been able to determine that Cisco routers actually support dynamic DNS. I have seen some documentation for security appliances that make it possible (but I don't think they work with MS DNS)

As far as what I've found from Cisco, they sell a DNS/DHCP solution called Cisco Network Registrar which supports dynamic DNS. My suggestion would be to pick one solution or the other. (I have no experience with CNR and I have no idea what it costs)

I am having problems remotley administering my domain. I am using a vista computer to administer my domain remotely. When I try to open the domain users and computers appalet I get the message that says " naming information can not be located ...". I know that DNS is running (maybe not correctly) and that my computer logged on to the domain. DNS is the only thing that I can think as the problem. I can log onto OWA by typing in the ip address but I can not use the admin tools. Please help

We have bound several Macs to the Microsoft AD domain. One of the reasons for doing this was to achieve a single sign-on environment. ie no need to reautenticate when connecting to one of the file servers etc.
The problem we have is that when we attempt to connect to the Win2003 fileserver using AFP we are still being prompted to reauthenticate wheras if we use SMB instead it connects staright away. We have noticed that the SMB connection works straight off as the Kerberos Domain Controller (KDC) issues the OSX user with a kerberos ticket which is viewable in the Kerberos.app on the Mac.
Does anybody have any ideas that may help with this ?

I am running a Windows 2003 server with 2 NICS in my office. The internal LAN in the office is on 192.168.1.xxx, subnet mask

The Second NIC installed for VPN has IP address: I have configure RAS to work on the Second NIC. It uses DHCP to give out IP addresses to VPN clients in the 192.168.0.xxx range.

My home network and Vista client machine are on 192.168.15.xxx.

I can connect and register my Vista client machine on the network, but I cannot ping any of the computers, including the server, in the office network. I believe I have to set up some sort of a static route or a classless route, or something like that, so that the VPN client machine (192.168.0.xxx) can hop over to the office network (192.168.1.xxx).

Can anyone help?

By the way, I know that the router is passing the traffic correctly because if I set up RAS to distribute an address to the VPN client in the 192.168.1.xxx range using the existing NIC (not the second NIC in the server), everything works fine.

my scenario is this i have a windows 7 laptop that i connect my iphone to upload pics from to the laptop so that i can keep my iphone free of space. is there a way when i make this change to have the picutres folder on the windows 7 laptop to sync to my server 2003 on the network to the external drive that is connected to it? i can use My BE 2010 software but that wouldnt work because i would have to follow a sceduled backup, my point is when i log into the laptop and move the pics off my iphone i want this folder to sync or backup with the changes to the server and then to the external drive when i connect to my LAN.

Well I just realized that about half of my life is stored on my hard-drive. I'm backing up with an external HD but being the paranoid I am, if the house is burnt down.. the backup doesn't help much.

Any software that automatically uploads any file that I put in a specific folder to some server? So I can access it from another computer and download the stuff back, just in case.

Is it true one cannot use a thin client but need a regular cpu setup to use Small Business Server 2003 ?

There is a difference in costs and since i have windows 2000 on the desktops and xp on the notebooks wondered if i needed to shell out so much more $$ for the Windows Server 2003 . I plan to put in a wireless networking system to link all the 5 machines.

XP Pro SP2, all latest updates. When I reboot, I can correctly sync to a time server, but after an unknown amount of time it goes back to saying "The RPC server is unavailable" instantly after clicking Update Now, regardless of what server I tell it to sync to. I also noticed that if I view my nForce Networking Controller status, then click Properties and go to the Authentication tab, everything is greyed out. If I hit OK without changing anything (I can't change it even if I wanted to), a message pops up saying "An unexpected condition occured. Not all of your requested changes in settings could be made" and just goes back to that window. I have to hit cancel to close it. These two issues seem to be related since right after I reboot, the Authentication tab works normally (as well as the time sync like I mentioned above), and they both seem to stop working at the same time. I have no idea if it happens after something I run or if it's just after a certain amount of time or what. Any ideas?

There is a process running on my computer called csrss.exe
I went to http://www.processlibrary.com and looked it up and came up with 2 different things. One says it is a Trojan and needs to be removed. The same exact process name also says it is Microsoft client server runtime server and SHOULD NOT be removed.
How I am supposed to tell the difference so I do not make a mistake by either leaving it alone or removing it???

A friend is moving his business, and the new business park that he's setting up shop in does not have anyway to get any wired internet to his building, excluding a T1 line, which he can't justify the cost of.

One windows 7 machine acts as the server, primarily for Quickbooks database, and there are two other windows 7 machines that are clients, reading off said database.

He's getting one of those usb dongles for wireless internet service, for the server only (the other two computers will be tethered to a smartphone for internet for QB and windows updates periodically).

They do NOT want to share the servers wireless connection to the other machines.

My only concern was if the server will continue to try to check the LAN for internet connectivity, or will it check both network connections when one fails, or is there a setting I can tell them to change to ensure it knows to go to the wireless dongle for internet all the time, without interfering with the workstations talking to the server over the LAN to get to the database?

The setup at the old office was business class DSL, they are using a relatively new Linksys router, which had the DSL authentication information.

But the short answer is, under the advanced properties of TCP/IP v4, uncheck automatic metric, set your internet to a value of 1, and the LAN to a value of 9999.

I'm looking at setting up windows 2003 terminal servers all over the place to replace the awful thing people are currently doing here - vncing servers with one small shared password among everyone <holding my hands over my ears for the backlash>. Don't blame me, it's another awful legacy I have to get rid of...

1. I've got to set up a Terminal Server Licensing server and was thinking about putting this on my second domain controller. I was wondering what would happen in this server dies, though. Is there some way of having resilience in this scenario? Perhaps a second Licensing server or something, the way you have 2 or more Domain Controllers?

2. Also, I know that Windows XP has an RDP client, I've used before on many occasions, but what about all the Windows 2000 clients that I still have out there. What should I do for them to access the new Terminal Servers?

A:Terminal Server license server(s)? RDP client for Windows2K?

I'm not 100% sure on #1, but I believe that the TS licensing becomes integrated into the AD, so if one DC goes down, the other one will be able to check licensing. On another note, if you are using the TS for administration only, I don't believe you needs the TS Licensing to be installed.

For #2, you can download the latest version of the RDP client from MS's website. It should also be available through Windows Updates, although I think Win2K isn't supported any longer, other than Critical Updates.

Hi I'm working on a client/server with the Java programming language and trying to figure out how to protect my server. With my current Virus/Firewall protection suite theres nothing I can do to keep out unwanted Java applications on the port I choose to allow the Java SE Binary through for clients accessing the server application. ESET Smart Security 4 is what I am using. Does anybody know of a security suite that would allow only a specific Java application to get through the firewall? I'm not to sure on this subject because my firewall is identifying any Java application as only the "Java SE Binary" and not I'm sure if you can even really name your Java application like you would something you would write in C++. Any information would be appreciated, thank you.

I have 6 computers in a workgroup that need to be synchronized to a workgroup server.  The server is a virtual Win 7 running on a Windows 10 host.  Neither the server or client computers have internet access.  I started the process by configuring
the host to use its CMOS clock as its time source, which seems to have worked. The client computers are not virtual and can communicate with the Win 10 host as I am able to RDP to the host from the clients.  I made the following registry key changes to
get that accomplished.

I get a message that the command is successful.

Hi All,
I have a WPF application where client is on Win 7 and server installed on Windows Server 2008. I was using a self signed certificate in the server for SSL communication between client and the server. Using this self signed certificate my client (Win 7) was
communication with the server (Windows server 2008) without any issue but recently I have observed that client could not communicate with the server. It basically can't reach to the server. SSL certificate used Sha1 algorithm and I think this problem could
be because of Sha1 deprecation by Microsoft.
I also tried to replace Sha1 certificate with Sha256 certificate and created a Sha256 certificate using the link https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Self-signed-certificate-5920a7c6. But I got the same issue with this certificate as well.
When I debugged client code I found that is is giving error when validating server certificate. Below is the error that I received while certificate validation. ChainStatus shows error - "A
certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider"
Please suggest me how can I resolve this issue.

I have just replaced an old XP box with our first Windows 8.1 Pro client. Joined the domain (Server 2008 R2, using active directory), seamed quite normal. When I rebooted, I received the normal windows logon screen, user name & password, entered those and logged in. The problem being, all resources on the network required me to enter network credentials. For example, try and double click on file server get following 'Windows Security' window:
Enter network credentials. Enter your credentials to connect to: SERVER.
The system cannot contact a domain controller to service the authentication request. Please try again later

I have: unjoined and rejoined client to domain; Checked active directory and the computer is correctly registered. Nothing is helping. Please help.

A:Network Credentials issue, win 8.1 client & Server 2008 AD

According to Paul Thurrott you need to add the credentials by going into the Windows vault per method #2 in the link below. If you don't add the credentials to the vault then Windows won't remember them despite checking the box to remember credentials.

He is using Windows server 08 and Homegroups with Windows 8 and he shows both methods to access network shares on the server.


No comment about the link I posed here>???

By the way I know this is solved, hoping you can come back to confirm this.

Hi all,

I got a problem with a Server 2003 and computer with Vista Business 32bit.

All user have a home folder on a Windows 2003 Server and I redirect the "My Documents" folder from Vista on this folder.

When I look on the server the folder where the home folder are store, I see all folder for all user with the same name "Documents" and not the logon name from my user. Sample in the attached file. If I rename the folder "Documents" with something other all folder have after the same name again.

All computer with Windows XP do not make this problem, the folder name stay with the user logon name.

Can someone help me? Thanks

Okay what are the steps needed to make the new Windows 2003 server take over all roles that the old 2003 server had? Here is the scenario. I have 1 2003 server this was really only a glorified desktop but it served its purpose. It was the only Server on the domain in a single domain/single site scenario. I now have had a second 2003 server built And I have it added into the domain. I setup all the same functions DNS Server, Domain Controller - Active Directory, File server and print server.

With Server 1 turned off and Server 2's IP changed to the IP of Server 1 the clients are pulling DNS from the PC's in the domain do work fine I.E. log in fine authenticate have full control over the shares they should, have internet browing.

The problem is that Server 2 (only when Server 1 is turned off) is not able to populate all the active directory objects (I mean it shows the item but it is greyed out and gives some errors about a Global Catalog Server not being available). Why am I geting this if both PC's are setup as Active Directory domain controllers?

Please explain this and let me know what else I have to ensure to do before pulling off this original Windows 2003 server so far I have the following done -

Shares from Server 1 recreated on Server 2 - Check
Server 2 is now configured as the DNS Server and functioning just fine - Check
Server 2 has print ques recreated and everyone is printed to it just fine -check
Server 2 is showing all the AD items from Server ... Read more

This sounds tricky alright. I did the MCSE exams on AD and Windows 2000 server etc, from what I can remember there is only one Global Catalog server in the network. So I assume that when you set up the first server it assumed this role for the network. BUT when you add the second server this finds that there is already a Global Catalog server and does not assume this role itself.

"The first domain controller in a forest is automatically created as a global catalog server. Thereafter, you can designate other domain controllers to be global catalog servers if they are needed."

I would try to promote your 2nd server to a Global Catlog server and see if this resolves the issues.

I am the IT support guy at a hospital, and have started noticing that a few user logons have the ability to access all of the folders on the network share. It appears that they have 'Domain Admin.' access. I have checked permissions, and these users do not belong to groups that have been given access to the folder. I have covered what I believe to be the basics (folder permissions, users permissions, group permissions, inheritance, etc) but the IT manager and myself have run out of ideas.
I realise I can add the users that I have noticed to all folders on the network share and expressly deny them access; but this will do nothing to any other users that also have this quirk that I have not picked up on yet.
Is there any area I am not looking at, and is there a way to discover if any other users also have incorrect access without the need of testing every user (about 500 at last count).
The hospital is running Win Server 2003, and the client machines are a mixture of Win 2000 and Win XP.
Any ideas would be gratefully received,

i have a windows Xp professional (service pack 2) hp notebook joined to server 2003 domain. Every morning when the user boots up the notebook she can connect to the share drive on the server but doesnt see any of the folders... she will only see it after a restart of the computer...can anyone tell me why that might be the case ?

I just installed a server in our school running windows 2003 SP2. I have created user accounts for all the students and set them up with roaming profiles (active directory... I think that is what it is called). The problem is that my students do not like to wait the 5 min to login!! So I started reading about folder redirection.

Sounds easy...

1. Open File Server Management create a shared folder called users$
2. Set the share permissions to full control for Everyone
3. open Active Directory Users and Computers
4. Right click the domain and go to properties
5. click on the Group Policy tab
this is where I have questions. I have been just editing the Default Domain Policy. #1 is this right?​6. Edit the Policy, go to -User config -Windows Settings -Folder Redirection
7. Then I right click My Documents
8. On the Target tab I select Advance - Specify locations for various user groups
9. Then Click Add, entered the name of the group testI have a user called test_t who is a member of the test group​10. I selected Create a folder for each user under the root path and for the root path I enter \\servername\users$
11. then click ok

So then what? I mean what is supposed to happen? I log into a computer with my test_t account and the roaming profile works fine BUT nothing happens to My Documents!

Am I missing something, or am I just to simple to figure this out, or is the fact that it is snowing out causing some ID-10T error?

My server at the house has Windows 2003 server, I have IIS installed and have one of my web pages hosted behind my Linksys wireless router/firewall. My server has a fixed IP address and the router has the IP address open with port 80. I do not have a static IP address. However, Dynsite and Zone Edit take care of that and the web site works fine. Now the issue, I have a total of four web sites to host, IIS gives me an IP address error when I try to start one of the other web sites. It has to be something silly im missing.

I just have a quick question, I have setup a VPN using RRAS and L2TP shared secret, etc. From the client computer it connects no problem, and I can access shared resources on the LAN like it's supposed to work. The only problem is when I connect to the VPN, my browser doesn't work, can't get external internet to work and copying files from outlook 2007 to a shared resource seems to lock outlook up.

I'm not sure if this has something to do with sending all traffic over vpn or not. Is there any steps I can take to quickly resolve this issue? This seems to be the only thing affecting the users at the office.

Hello everybody. We have a Windows 2000 server based domain. Recently we installed Windows Server 2003 x64 R2 edition to a new server and added this server to the domain only as a member server. On this w2k3 server we have several shared directories for all domain users. The problem we have is that though everything seems to be working fine, but after some time domain users cannot access those shared folders at all or the server takes a very long time to react. W2k3 server has SP2 and all of the available updates applied. EventViewer does not show any error messages and there seems to be no problem with the server, because when you log on directly everything looks fine the system doesn't crash or smth. Afer restart of the server everything works again for several hours until the problem appears again. What could be causing this problem with shared folders?

Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.
Trying to access a folder on via a CIFS share on a Netapp file server.
On my Windows 7 box I get the "You don't have permission to access \\file path.
If rt-click > properties on the folder > Security Tab I get the "You don't have permission to view or edit this object's permission settings."
Clearly I do since I am a member of the File Administrators group and a Domain Admin and an Enterprise Admin.
If I login to an XP or Server 2003 host, I have full access to the folder, the files and can update any and all permissions.  So clearly something is different about my Win 7 host.  I've even tried opening the Windows File Explorer as an Admin,
but that made no difference.
What gives?  How can I fix this?

I finally figured this out.  Sorry, I forgot to post the solution a while back.  Basically I don't know the real reason why this occurred.  I was able to solve this by installing and running CCleaner.  This went through the system and
cleaned up a bunch of little know cache's that I wasn't aware of.  After that I was able to view and update the permissions on the Security tab of all my Files and Folders that were being accessed via a CIFS share on my Netapps.  I don't know which
item that was cleaned was responsible for causing this problem in the first place.

Sys: Windows 8.1 Pro clients attached to MS 2003 server domain. (yes I know its best to have a higher win server version with 8.1, but i do not have that currently)

Ok, so the problem is that roaming profiles and folder redirection work but on only SOME of the windows 8.1 clients!!!!

How can these both work fine on only SOME of my essentially identical workstations?

I realize that I need different Profile types for the different OS's. I have applied the V4 registry edit and created a V4 default profile in my sysvol directory on the DC so that the workstations get a proper V4 starting profile.

All PC's are in same OU container.

My GPO's for roaming profiles and folder redirection have not changed from my XP workstations, Windows server 2003 domain controller.

So I create a new user, and log into one of the win8.1 client machines on my local lan. Wow, profile works, V4 created in the profile share, redirection works perfectly. So I log out. I then remote to an identical PC across my wan. Log in as same user and it works fine, get the redirected desktop, and profile. But now the fun begins. I log out to complete the profile "swap" back to the server. I try to log back in and the disaster starts. (Yes, I have triple checked my permissions on all shares etc.)

I get the "DESKTOP cannot be loaded error". Logs show REDIRECTION SUCCESSFUL for my desktop!!! What the?

Windows 8.1 V3 Roaming Profiles

Windows 8 and 8.1 now has another version of roaming profiles which are incompatible with the Windows Vista/7 versions (Incompatibility between Windows 8 roaming user profiles and roaming profiles in other versions of Windows). As of the November 2013 Windows 8.1 update there is now a registry key you can set to spawn a .v3 profile to avoid conflicts with older versions of the profile. This registry key is a DWORD Value called “UseProfilePathExtensionVersion” with a value of “1″ and needs to be created under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlset\Services\ProfSvc\Parameters key. This can be then be deployed using the Group Policy Preferences Registry Extension that is targeted to the Windows 8.1 Computers.
