Q: How do I "unlock drive where windows is installed"?

I have a Gateway SX2370-UR13 with windows 8.0 installed, it has been nothing but problem after problem, from the first day I got it. I tried the "free" upgrade to windows 8.1 & that made things worse. I had to roll back to 8.0. Things have
gotten so bad that now the System restore, Refresh, & Reset options fail to function,(along with the Task manager, Control Panel, Advanced startup options & nearly everything else), giving me a message about needing to unlock the drive. This happens
with the USB recovery media , the repair disk(CD?DVD) , & the Automatic repair.

How do I fix this ?

I'm ready to go back to the beginning factory settings but cannot find a workable fix. How do I even format the entire drive? So I can try the recovery media again for a "clean install?"

I needed*to install SQL Server 2014 Management Studio for a database course that I'm taking. I wasn't able to load the database, so I played around with the C drive permissions and I ended up losing all access to my C drive.*If I try to*go anywhere like Acer Recovery Management or C: Security Tab or UAC, I get "access is denied".*I have my Windows 8 recovery USB and I played around in the command prompt but ended up making it worse. (Before I could still log on and use Chrome) but now I'm getting "\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD - You'll need to use Recovery tools" It*messed up when I tried this command "bcdboot c:\Windows /l en-us /s x: /f ALL" I tried all the other commands from this website:

I have the same problem I just read about here. Suddenly, when I click on "Start" there is no response. When I click on the "imported favorites" in the tool bar, there is no response. Sometimes, if I first click into my AOL E Mail account,
then I can reach the favorites list, one time. After it's closed, it won't display again unless I re-boot.

Hi, I'm trying to fully encrypt with Truecrypt the main OS drive but it halts with the following message:
"Windows does not appear to be installed on the drive from which it boots"
So this is my setup:
- I have two physical drives, an SSD drive where Windows 7x64 is installed listed as "C" drive (Disk 0), and a 2nd internal HDD, listed as "E" drive (Disk 1).
- When I go to Disk Management in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management I find what seems to be the culprit preventing Truecrypt from continuing encryption. The C drive is listed as "Boot" drive but not "System" drive, instead drive E is listed as "System" as seen in the screenshot:

I also noticed that "bootmgr" is located in the E drive and not in the C drive.
So how can I make the boot drive C also be the System drive?

Well, I solved the issue by disconnecting the 2nd drive, doing a startup repair, and then reconnecting the E drive back. The bootmgr file still shows in the E drive's root directory, Can I safely delete it? Thanks.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

I just installed a new 60gb hard drive as a back up to put my movie files on,it installed fine and it works fine but i get "windows milenium emergancy boot" when i boot the system up .I don"t know if this error is serious but I do know that the system seems less stable in this boot mode..can someone please help? thanx

I'm using Windows 10 th2-10511 x64 and when I install EMET 5.5 final the EMET system service is installed with the "delayed start" flag and the service and never starts after a reboot. The same thing happened with the beta version, I didn't notice
it until the final was released. This issue doesn't occurs with EMET 5.2.
I switched the service back to the normal Automatic (not delayed) start, and everything seems to be working again. I was wondering if anyone else experienced this issue?

Also, can someone enlighten me about this warning message "DEP/ASLR Policy settings are ineffective by default; see user's guide on how to enable them". It appears when I enable the DEP/ASLR EMET GPO. I couldn't find any reference to this warning
message in the user guide. DEP seems to be enabled, I have no idea how to check for ALSR other than Process hacker that shows ASLR as N/A.

I have a Xp Home installed in a logical partition. It was booted originally by a Dos primary partition operated as the "C" drive.

What I have done is to move the Xp around in the logical partitions in the same disk or to another disk. It can be assigned to a different drive letter if it is not operating. However if I boot this Xp it will seize the drive "D" back again no matter where it is or how many other partitions between itself and the boot volume.

I finally moved it to a primary partition and nuked all the other partitions it could recognize. The boot loader has been re-configured to run Xp as the sole operating system. It now operates happily as a "D" drive without a "C" in the system.

Just wonder can the Drive letter be changed after installation or is there a lot of work involved. Not particularly bother with it as my prime objective is to see if I could move the M$ Windows between partitions and disks within the same computer. So far everything works except this stuborn drive letter business.

Today I tried to burn a disk of mp3 files as I've done many times before. When I tried to copy the files from the C drive to the D (CD/DVD drive), Windows Explorer only would allow "Move," not "Copy". I tried to copy with CTRL+Right Click and that didn't work either - when I hover over the icon for the D drive it says "Move."

I was able to copy and burn a disk (in CD format) with Windows Media Player, and the CD drive works fine for playback. Also, when I plug in an external hard drive Windows Explorer allows copy of files to the external hard drive.

It's only when I try to copy files to the CD drive that I encounter this problem.

No other recent changes have been made to the computer.

try selecting the files--then right click and select 'SEND TO' CD/DVD--it shouldn't be possible to 'copy' to a blank CD/DVD as it will be unformatted.

This is not really a problem, more like a nerdy technical question, since I like being informed about the goings-on in my PC. I hope I posted it in the right section, since IMVU would probably fall more under "game" than anything else.

I have always been curious as to why would the developers of the chat client IMVU decide to have the program install within C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\IMVUClient (previous versions did so under "Documents and Settings") instead of "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" on Windows... I am also curious if this unconventional choice could potentially make my PC vulnerable to attacks.

Now, the program works fine AFAIK, but I'm puzzled by this. I'm the kind of user who likes having the choice of installing apps in a drive other than C: (to free space in C:, for portability, etc.), and who gets nervous when apps do not install or behave the way that I'm used to.

I was told by someone more knowledgeable than me that it was probably a lazy way to get around administrative install rights in Windows Vista and Windows 7. He also added that the cache data of the program shouldn't be in Roaming when there is no upper limit or even default size set on it.

And yes, this has been asked on their forums, but no staff member ever answered it (only a forum mod, who didn't have a clue).

Any ideas? Or am I being overly paranoid?

As stated, my system runs fine but I wanted to try the F12 diagnostics to see how it worked.  To my surprise it shows a problem was found and the Hard Drive - not installed.
Would this be a normal situation when running a PCIe drive using a NVMe driver?
I am wondering what the Support Assistant would do if it popped up for some reason.  If it can't see the M.2 drive, would it give me incorrect responses?
Should I disable Support Assistant?
System is two week old XPS 13 9365 2-in-1, running a Samsung 960 Pro in PCIe mode using the Samsung NVMe driver, running without problems..

I recently bought a new SSD for my 128 Gb Dell XPS 13 (9350), but now whenever I try to boot it up it always gives me the error "Hard Drive - Not Installed". I am trying to install a clean SSD, because I feel that my old one (the one that came with it) is filled with too much junk to transfer over. Could somebody please help me fix this problem?

Since you purchased an PCIe NVMe drive, have you changed the SATA controller to AHCI in the Bios?
Do you have a 2.5 inch SATA drive?
I am not aware of the driver situation with the 9350 but if you want to use the PCIe version, the Bios has to provide the driver during boot.  If it does not at the present time, it may need a Bios update to the latest..  But I am not familiar with that particular system.

I have a Dell XPS 13 9360, bought in 11/2016, still under warranty.
Windows 10 Home, all updates installed.
Every once in a while (irregular intervals, once a week to once a month), the laptop freezes, then restarts, enters BIOS, and shows a message "Hard Drive not Installed", then there is a status bar showing the diagnostics is being performed, and then the laptop shuts off. After I turn it on again, Windows boots and everything works normally. Otherwise, no problems with the laptop. I don't see any clear association between freezes and what kind of work is being performed or software being run. Sometime happens during heavy load, sometimes on idle.
Things seem to get better after every BIOS update, it doesn't happen for several weeks, but then starts again. Do you think this is just a BIOS problem that may get solved eventually by updates, or is it a hardware issue? Should I contact support and attempt to fix? I imagine it would be very difficult to troubleshoot because the problem is very intermittent. Is this a common problem for other 9360 users?

I got my dell few days ago. Installed it with Samsung EVO 850 SSD 500 Gb and Kingston 8GB PC3L - 12800 SODIMM.The Windows 10 Home OEM home is installed on HDD 1TB so I decided to use Samsung Data Migration software to clone the data to SSD. However, the OS crashed and decided to install a fresh Windows 10 Enterprise to SSD and deleted the previous OS on HDD using diskpart.Now after Installing Windows 10 Ent OS files. Every after BIOS run, I got BSOD errors "MEMORY MANAGEMENT" + "Page Fault it non paged area" + "IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL"

I just tried to switch hard drives between my EMachine T6528 to my Dell Dimension 8400. I thought I did it correctly, but it is giving me the message "No Boot Device Available". Can you direct me in what to do?

Make sure that the device to which you are trying to boot (the optical drive?) is recognized by the BIOS as bootable and enabled and is in the boot order list.

Purchased my XPS 15 9560 with i7-7700HQ, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD, GTX1050 4GB, and 1080P display back in June 2017. Since installing the 1.5.0 BIOS update, I received a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION bluescreen, and now my laptop no longer boots.
Upon powering on the laptop, I'll usually see the Dell POST screen, then it will either go black for an extended period of time before shutting down on its' own, or boot into ePSA SupportAssist Diagnostics and run through the quick troubleshooting tests. These tests will either result in a "Hard Drive - Not Installed" error, or show all hardware passing, but "No boot devices found" before shutting down.
As a computer technician with 10+ years experience in the field, I've already taken the appropriate steps to fully remove all power from the laptop, including unplugging the battery, and reseating the RAM and NVMe SSD in their sockets. The laptop still fails to boot or detect the drive on a regular basis.
Very occasionally I'll see the drive detected in the F12 Boot Options screen, as it shows up as a SanDisk A400 SSD, however, the system still locks up on a black screen should I choose to try to boot from it. I can get it to UEFI boot from a Windows 10 Installation USB, or from the Recovery USB I made with Dell's recovery tools, but only if I boot with the NVMe SSD unplugged from the motherboard. Otherwise the system hangs upon trying to boot.

When you install a new program, what determines where it is listed: All Users>Start Menu>Programs or "user name">Start Menu>Programs?


A:What determines if a program is installed under "All Users" or "user name"?

Usually some of the programs give you an option to install it under your user name or for all users during the setup process. So say if I was installing (CVTae) a resume programming on a Windows XP computer it will after the installation process ask me if I want to install it as all users (so it will show up on the all users start menu so everyone can see it) or just for me. That's where you can decide for yourself where you want to install it.

'So usually it's the user's choice of where it's listed in most cases, but certainly not in all cases.

I have had my Dell Inspiron 17 5758 Laptop since around Feb 10, 2015 so almost 2 years now.  The lap top was working fine up until mid day yesterday now it is stuck in the "preparing sutomatic repair" loop and ends with either a black screen, saying my laptop didnt start correctly or that it couldnt repair my laptop and when i try to run a diagnostic on it it says that my hard drive is not installed. Also now the hard drove is simply not running. Is this because the hard drive as failed? Its in transit a lot and occasionnaly hits a bumps on the seat of my car when driving.
Also if i have to buy a new hard drive how would i install windows 10 on my laptop again? Will i have to pay for it again?

I had Vista 64 bit on one hard drive (C). When I upgraded to Win 7 I had to do a new install as I went from Vista 64 bit Home Premium to Win 7 64 bit Professional. That wasn't a problem as I had a new 1TB drive formatted and ready to use for Win 7. However, when I installed Win 7 it installed on the new hard drive but set it up as "E". Now, I have a dual boot with Win 7 and Vista but Win 7 is drive "E". If I remove the dual boot and physically disconnect the Vista drive, can I rename the Win 7 to "C" and will all the installed software recognize "C" instead of the current "E"? I don't need the old Vista 64 bit anymore.

Obviously there is no difference on what the drive letter is, just wanted to get back to the conventional "C" drive without having to do a complete new install, now that I have everything setup and working in Win 7.

This is for XP but I've already used it fine for Windows 7 too.

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)

Another question/puzzle. Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

I clean installed W8.1 three days ago, and the first thing I did was bring it up to date with all the offered updates. All installed successfully and I thought no more of it. At some point after this I made a system image backup, which today I have restored to. When I now look at the "classic" windows update screen it says I have never checked for updates and none are installed. Forcing a check for updates brings only two up as can be seen in the pictures. If I go to "view installed updates" then there is a lot of stuff in there, whih I assume could be the previously installed original batch.
I'm guessing this is normal behaviour but it seems slightly odd (the on screen messages at least)

Whenever I press Win-L, it locks to my welcome screen and stays locked like that, even if my screensaver comes up. But when my computer automatically locks after 5 min. it goes to the "Unlock this Computer" dialog box.

Is there anyway to change the auto-lock to my welcome screen?

Hey there,

I installed a program on 15th March 2009 called MyFolder Manager, which allowed me to password protect particular files or folders on my computer

It was a free program, and their help section lists this as their website, though it doesnt seem to be of any real help: http://virtual-protect.com/

I have a folder which contains ALL my passwords for accounts here there and everywhere, be they bank accounts, online casino/betting accounts, or just email accounts.

I've never had a problem with the program, but when i tried opening the folder today, i was met by a message reading:

"Location is not available
C:\Users\Zazkad\Desktop\Important Documents is not accessible.
Access is denied."

I've tried my best to find other ways at getting around this problem, but regardless of what i try to do, it won't let me access the files within that folder in any way. And i REALLY need access to that folder soon, it's really important to me!

I would greatly appreciate some help on this matter

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=242917. This will explain it all. I have did what it says to do but nothing works. I am the only one who uses my computer at home and I don't have it locked. When the message shows it will let me click ok without putting my administrater password, (which I have no idea what it is anyway!) I have tried to change screensavers and all (my official screensaver is my pictures slideshow) but I have no clue at what to do! Can someone help me with this problem? I have windows xp pro. And I can't figure out how it did all this!

That you can click okay without entering a password and have it work just means that you do not have a password on your account.
As they say, the problem is caused by a bad screensaver.
You need to remove that one.
Have you tried changing the screensaver to none and then change all settings to always on ?
Did you do the registry edit microsoft tells you to do there?
What about boot to safe mode and change the screensaver?

How to remove the "Authenticated Users" "Create Folders" permission from the root of the C Drive via command-line?
I know this question has been asked many times before, but nothing works for us!
We tried the following:
Take ownership: I cannot take ownership using the Administrator account (local and Domain Admin accounts) of the root C:. Error Access Denied
Cuurent root C: owner is TrustedInstaller and acnnot be changed.
We cannot change or remove the Create Folders permission of the Authenticated Users of the root C: . Error Access Denied.
Drive C: is hidden via GPO, but many users can enter it from the File-Explorer and create folders in the root C:.
We do not want -for many reasons- to Block/ Prevent Access to C: via GPO.
We also tried to run cacls and/or icacls under the system-account (PSEXEC -i -s -d CMD). Error Access Denied.
icacls C:\ /deny *S-1-5-11:(NP)(AD)
Error Access Denied.
icacls C:\ /remove:g *S-1-5-11
Error Access Denied.
cacls c:\ /e /c /R "Authenticated Users"
Error Access Denied.
Also using GPO "Computer Configuration\Security Settings\Restricted Groups ..." does not work!
Now we have this issue on over 450 pc's on our network. Nothing work. Please help! How to remove the "Authenticated Users" "Create Folders" permission from the root of the C: Drive on command-line?

Hey guys my friends nec versa - Versa E2000 gives her "Warning: cannot unlock primary hdd" whenever she starts her computer. It has had an history of being nasty, and she has had to play with BIOS settings before in order to be able to boot in(such as the master password), but she says that this is a different problem as it is acting differently. I spent the last few hours searching around on the net trying to find a way to solve this.(she lives far away from me, so I can't get hands-on, otherwise I might have been more help).

This problem only occurs after bios has done it's thing, when it tries to boot into windows. She says that it just randomly started happening although her norton anti-virus was refusing to update before hand.

I made a business invoice with the default Excel template and it fits my needs. However, all of the text formatting options are greyed out, which leaves me only with the ability to enter text. I'd like to be able to do a little formatting within the default template just to jazz up the look a bit but can't for the life of me find an option to "unlock" the template so it will allow for some text formatting. Is there a way to do this?

I assume you have tried using the tools menu, protection and unprotect the sheet option. It should allow you to do this Word 2003 does. Make your changes, then protect the sheet again so you can only select the unprotected cells.

At work I constantly run into an issue of someone who has logged into a computer and instead of logging out they just left it on and walked away causing the computer to lock or manually locking it themself. Some terminals will have a button which says "Other Credentials" while sometimes that button is unavailable. Why is this and how do I fix it so I don't have to kill the power every time a computer is locked? I've searched everywhere and there have been other people asking this question and the answer is, "log in as administrator and unlock the computer." How do I log in as administrator if I can't even get somewhere to enter an account name?

It's driving me nuts.

If the "user" connected to the Domain doesn't log out, then you're faced with telling them what they need to do.

If you're the Domain's IT, then you need to have a "dialog" with owner's permission to accomplish your 'job'.

In all operating systems up to Vista, the flash drive's "active" light turns off when I go through the disconnect procedure; but, in Vista, it doesn't. I have traditionally used this as part of my explanation to others (and a convenience to myself) about when to not to remove the flash drive from its USB port.

This is a problem common to all Vista systems I've seen.

Why does the light not turn off in Vista?

And, is there an easy way to correct this?

Additional information: I have eliminated this problem being hardware-related. I have loaded Vista onto one of my systems here that previously had Windows 2000, then XP on it and it was only with the loading of Vista that the problem developed on this system. have done a litte research and testing in my lab on several machines and have confirmd the problem. What it seems to indicate to me is that, in Vista, the light simply indicates power, not data transfer. Whenever I am transferring data, the light blinks.

While I have never actually tested it, I do not belive that the "safely remove" feature actually kills all power to the USB port in XP. If that is the case, then there is really no danger as long as vista has acknowledged the disconnect and knows not to try to write data to the drive.

After privacy protection installed itself I no longer have a desktop. The task bar is still on the screen as well as the start menu. But when I click on the start menu there is nothing on it. The only programs that are running are " privacy protection", "windows security center", and "XP anti-virus 2012". All three of these are running completely by themselves and I never installed or downloaded any of them. I cannot get on the internet or do anything with my computer. I know that privacy protection and XP anti-virus 2012 are fake virus protection but when my computer was still somewhat functional, these programs did not allow me to run anything which made it hard to fight it off. I have some really important stuff on my computer and I would hate to lose it all.

I just installed a home use version of Microsoft Office 2010 on my home PC. Previously this was a problem free, perfectly working installation of Windows 7. Now it appears that the office installation has killed it. Instead of booting up properly, my PC hangs at "Windows is loading files..." if I choose safe mode. Or if I tried to boot up without safe mode, it just freezes at "Starting Windows".

This is a huge problem for me since I work from home. Has anyone been able to solve this issue?

Sounds like a bad install. I would use system restore to return to a point prior to installation. I would then try the OS for a while make sure that it works properly. Then make a system restore point and try to install again.

Try to get to system restore from safe mode. If cannot be done report back and we might try another approach. Try a start up repair

I was trying to use the Vista boot to format a drive that wouldn't let me boot properly... In the process I ended up installing Vista (I deleted a partition and just clicked on stuff automatically cos I assumed it was the same bla bla, but it wasn't)

Anyways, I wanna know if I can recover my old Win7? It's placed in Windows.Old now and Vista is the OS that launches of course.

I need help getting my printer to work with a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I had to re-install due to a CMOS error which I think was due to a dead battery. It still could be something else seeing as I have had other problems with this install (explained below). Anyway, the printer is an old Brother MFC 8300 (it has been a workhorse!). Previous times I have re-installed Windows there haven't been any problems with this printer. I simply install the driver from Windows Update (the driver is named "Brother MFC8600/9650 Series" in the device manager). But this time the "Windows Update" installed the driver and says everything is working properly but when I go to "Devices and Printers" it doesn't show up under "Printers and Faxes". There is a listing for "USB Composite Device" under "Devices" that shows "Brother MFC8600/9650 Series" as a scanner. Not sure what that means.

I also tried to manually download the driver from "catalog.update.microsoft.com". I downloaded 2 different versions of the driver. One has a file size of 2.0 MB and the other has a files size of 2.3 MB. I ended up not installing either because I didn't know where the proper destination location was using the "Expand" command from the "Command Prompt" with "expand <CAB FILE NAME> -F:* <DESTINATION>". You may have to change to a User with administrative rights or an Administrator.

There is a listing for "USB Composite Device" under "Devices" that shows "Brother MFC8600/9650 Series" as a scanner. Not sure what that means.

That means your unit is a MultiFunction device and include Printer, Fax, Copier and Scanner. Sometimes the scanner part will be picked up as a separate device because Win7 has a built-in function for scanning.

When I launch WU form the std start menu shortcut, it launches wuapp.exe and just hangs. I have to terminate the process in task manager. Additional launches = additional hung processes.

Shortcut target: %windir%\system32\wuapp.exe startmenu
Starts in: %windir%\system32\

The same condition occurs if I try to launch wuapp.exe directly from %windir%\system32\
Yesterday, I checked the Effective permissions for my user on wuapp.exe = full control
Today, after running the Windows WU Troubleshooter and WU MS Fixit, the permissions = read, read & execute.

The issue is twofold. The standard WU shortcut "hangs" but Control Panel WU does not hang, until I try to view installed updates (viewing history seems to be ok). I have to terminate the process in Task Manager once I try to view installed updates.

As a workaround, I created a shortcut to Control Panel WU - this allows me to check for and apply updates.

A few things that might have caused this - recent activity, but just guessing I installed Advanced Uninstaller Pro and played with it, but did not apply anything it suggested. One thing I tried was duplicate files - eventually killing it due to time (lots of dups, lots of files).

I'm not sure that resetting WU would actually cure your problem - it sounds to me more of a systemic problem, possibly to do with one of the involved technologies (scripting, NET, etc.).

When trying to use Windows Update, the updates download successfully but fail to install. The following message appears: "Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed." I have turned my antivirus software off, I have tried updating manually, I have tried updating one at a time. Nothing seems to work. I now have a backlog of 13 updates that I'm supposed to install. i wasn't really sure where to post this, but i have the no audio output device is installed error in windows vista home premium. I have tried everywhere and the only solutions i found were, to scan for hardware changes in my sound card, to disable then re-enable it and to update the drivers. I have tried all those options and it still does not work, Apparently my drivers and everthing is up-to-date.
I am using a HP-Pavillon a1215uk with 3.2Ghz processor and 2GB ram. My sound card appears in device manager as "high definition audio device"

Thank's to Broni, I just shook a nasty Trojan virus! However, now that's all taken care of -the printer is not working.

The printer is a HP Officejet J650 All-in-One It prints, scans, and is a fax machine. When I go on Microsoft Word and type in "testing" on a document and hit 'print' the printer will print my sheet out no problems. However, if I try to print a picture or pdf. file, this error message pops up.

For Pictures:

"This picture can't be printed because no printer is installed or a service that Windows needs is not running." --- 'Ok' "Click to expand...

For Pdf files:

I have uninstalled and re-installed the printer's hardware. Made sure the printer's spooler is working (that was an issue once a couple months ago). Set the printer as the "Default" and made sure everything is plugged in correctly. Like I said, it will print perfectly fine if I go on Microsoft Word > Edit > Print > Print and when it brings up the screen with all your print options I have to go up and select the 'printer name' in the drop down box.

So, my guess is that the other programs are not picking up on the printer by themselves because on Microsoft Word ... Read more

I have never had a problem installing updates to Win 8.1 and all important updates are fully installed. Every time I try to update to Win10 it says "downloading Windows 10 - checking requirements" and then I get the above error message. Any help would be much appreciated!

Long story short:
I finished using DBAN to wipe my hard drive clean in preparation for my Windows 8 installation, and I forgot to switch back to UEFI Boot Mode. (DBAN will *not* start unless legacy BIOS is activated.)

Have I reduced the performance of my computer in any way by doing this? Will I need to reinstall the OS in order to gain maximum performance?

Since it sounds like you've just installed Windows 8, it might be easiest and faster to just start over & reinstall with UEFI enabled.

While there's no guarantee that your hardware will boot more quickly with Windows 8 installed with UEFI enabled, it is highly likely that you will see some performance improvement. You will also be able to enjoy the added security of the Safe Boot features of UEFI.

ok...this is super super weird. I upgraded a 2005 compaq presario from XP to Win 7. Everything is fine except sound. I receive the no audio device installed message. I've done all the fixes in windows...uninstalling drivers, updating drivers EVERYTHING. Nothing works. I've even reinstalled the Win 7 pkg to no avail.
But here's where things get interesting. Prior to all of this. I had XP sharing the computer with Xubuntu. Under both systems, the sound was fine. Video actually streamed better in xubuntu. So I know the issue isn't hardware...the sound card, motherboard and what not. I re-loaded xubuntu back alongiside and once again I have sound thru xubuntu. No sound through Win 7.
Is there anything short of using xubuntu solely that I can do to get this Win7 audio issue resolved?
For what it's worth the driver isn't realtek...it's multimedia audio controller.
I haven't found much online about it.
I hear USB speakers might do the trick.
