I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This could be related to a corrupted IconCache.db file. Delete C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\IconCache.db and restart your computer.

Not sure if this is the best forum for this topic, but it kind of goes across several topics, so thats why its posted here. Mods, feel free to move.

First of all, a little background...

I am currently dual booting Win7 Ultimate and XP SP2 on the same brand new machine. It works great and I've had no problems with any hardware or software. All hardware is well above min specs and drivers are all up to date.

When running XP, I share my files to my Xbox 360 using a Microsoft utility called "Windows Media Connect 2" (WMC2). It allows me to access my video and music files directly from the Xbox dashboard (ie I don't need Media Center). It works great - everything plays without lag, and as soon as I move a file into one of the directories thats shared through WMC2, its instantly available on my xbox (note that the xbox connects to the computer through a wireless network).

After installing Win7, I was disappointed to learn that WMC2 was no longer supported and could not be installed. I tried using Windows Media Center, but found it unacceptably slow. On the xbox, I would try to open a folder full of files, and end up sitting there looking at the hourglass for 30 sec. Hard to believe, given that WMC2 was pretty much instantaneous when opening the exact same folder.

Next, I realized I could still browse Windows 7 files from the Xbox dashboard by sharing them with "Everyone" and then adding them to my "Videos" library. Its way way faster than Media C... Read more

A:Delay in files showing up on Xbox 360

Possible Workaround #1Apparently if you do all of your changes through the Libraries folder, the changes will show instantaneosly. If true, this shows that the problem lies in Window's indexing service. Possible Workaround #2A workaround without solely using the library's folders would be to open Windows Media Player 12 whenever you want the files to refresh, apparently this starts the indexing.Possible Fix:
1. Start
2. Control Panel
3. Programs
4. Programs and Features
5. Turn Windows Features on or off
6. Make sure "Indexing Service" is installed.
7. Wait to reboot until after verifying folders shared are part of index.

Now make sure that the folder/files you're trying to access are part of the index.

1. Right Click Folder
2. Properties
3. General Tab
4. Advanced
5. Make sure that "Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed..." is checked.
6. Reboot

I don't know if other people had this problem but I have a folder that I need to extract but apparently when I extract it to desktop, I click on the folder and noticed some files were missing. I check the unextracted folder and all the files were fine.
I realized when I extract the folder to desktop, the files aren't actually deleting because they seem to be there in the unextracted folder but not there when I extract them.
the next thing I tried is extracting one file that gets deleted from that folder into the desktop and then nothing happens. So the main thing is that the files wont extract to the desktop for a weird reason. I use McAfee anti virus and I tried disabling
everything possible from it and extracted the file. But it didn't work; also i'm running Windows 10.
All I know is that this is probably not from my antivirus and it has to do something with the file not being extracted.

Please help me fix this problem ASAP as the internet has no good answers or no answers at all.

I have a 64-bit Windows 8.1 HP. It came pre-installed 7-Zip. When I extract it changes the file names automatically upon extraction.

On my old Windows 7 desktop I had WinZip and this never happened. So I purchased and installed WinZip on the Windows 8.1 and the same thing happened, it changed the file name automatically.

I have tried all over the net and on this site to find a solution but to no avail. I also compared WinZip settings on the W7 and I can't really tell if they are the same as it is different on W8.1

My real concern is that when I extract the folder, it changes the files names adding additional characters where there would be spaces and then an extension of numbers.
Windows 7 did not do this at all. Please help!!! How can I turn this off?

I would like to ask how to set WinRAR to exclude files with the exact filenames: 'thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' (without the quotes, ignore case) from being extracted from an archive.

Ex. Files with these filenames should not be extracted:

Quote:
Thumbs.db
thumbs.db
THUMBS.DB
.DS_Store
.ds_store
.DS_STORE

while files with these filenames should be extracted:

Quote:
1Thumbs.db
1thumbs.db
tackthumbs.db
Thumbs.db.txt
Abcd thumbs.db.txt
1.DS_Store
Abcd.ds_store
.DS_Store.txt
Abcd.DS_STORE.txt

In 'Settings->Security->Prohibited file types->File types to exclude from extracting', if I just type in 'thumbs.db .DS_Store' (without the quotes) in the field, will it work the way I described?

Also, does anyone know if WinRAR has a syntax guide for the Prohibited file types list in case I'd like to add more filenames or be flexible with the rules I need?

The reason for this question, is I'd like to not extract unnecessary files from ZIP, RAR or 7z archives in Windows 7 - files like Windows 2000/XP's Thumbs.db file (Thumbnail cache) and Mac OS X' .DS_Store file (Desktop Services Store), while not being too strict and also not extracting files which just contain 'Thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' in its filename.

A:Setting WinRAR to exclude specified files from being extracted

Yes, it should work.

Here is a piece from WinRar 4.0 Help file

Quote:
Files to exclude
File masks and file names to exclude from the archiving operation. Wildcards are supported both in path and name parts of masks. If you need to specify several masks, separate them by spaces. If mask contains spaces, enclose it in quotes. For example, you may enter:

c:\temp\info.txt *.bak *.tmp *\temp\

to skip c:\temp\info.txt file, all .bak and .tmp files, all temp folders and all files in temp folders. You may enter file names manually or use "Append" button to browse for file to exclude.

Detailed information about exclusion masks syntax is provided in description of switch -x. This switch uses the same format of exclusion masks as "Files to exclude" field.

What was the extension of the compressed file and what types of files did it contain?

But it really isn't about the program doing the compressing but the data that is being compressed. Some types of files, such as many image files, are already compressed and any attempts at further compression will accomplish little if anything. Some file types, such as text files and some others, compress very well.

I am trying to delay records being shown on my access database form for 30 minutes from when the data is entered.

My database is populated by emails coming in, and some need to be left for 30 minutes before they need to be dealt with.

I was hoping to be able to put a DateDiff function in the filter when opening the form so that those wouldn't be displayed, but I can't seem to get it to work.

My DateDiff function looks like this:
DateDiff("n", Received, Now())

I think this should give me the number of minutes difference between when the email was received and the time now. I could then put > 30 to make it only display those that are more than 30 minutes old.

I think the problem might be the double quotes, but am not sure.

Any help to my thoughts, or a completly different solution to mine is welcome.

Thanks

Hello. Last year I installed one utility called Wrye Bash used to manage and install mods for the game Oblivion. This particular utility is distributed as a .zip archive, it has no installer. The installation instructions tell to simply extract the archive to the same installation folder where the game was installed. This archive contains folders and subfolders within it. Since July last year, I haven't used or updated Wrye Bash, and 75 new versions were released! Now I'd like to uninstall it first before installing the new version. Uninstalling wouldn't be necessary if the files to be extracted from the new archive overwrote all the files extracted earlier from the old version archive, but this doesn't happen for all the files: some of them are not overwritten. This brings me to this forum.

I'd like to know if there's any way to automatically uninstall (delete) all the files extracted from an archive. There must be a simple way to achieve this I'm not aware of. The hard way would be in Windows explorer to select each and every file in the destination directory which was extracted there from the archive, and then delete them. Is there any easier way to do this? Basically, I wish to know if there's any way to undo the extracting procedure, by automatically removing the files which were extracted to the destination directory.

I was hoping that converting the original .zip archive to a SFX archive with WinRar, I could then use this .exe SFX archive both to install (extract... Read more

Hi Friends,

I'm having an issue with my PC. When I open any files on my harddisk, it takes about 15 seconds for the file to open. It also happens if I try to right click on the files. Can someone help? I'd appreciate that.

I've tried disabling auto-protect on my symantec corporate antivirus. No luck.

A:Delay while opening files

I've seen this before. Sounds like there may be a reference in the registry to a network path that no longer exists. The reference could be to an icon, or possibly the shell command of an application.

This forum thread: http://pressf1.pcworld.co.nz/showthread.php?t=69219
might help. I think the link to http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rcdelay.htm could be your best bet.
I've never used RegistryScanner (referred to in the previous link) so can't testify to it's usefulness. I'm old school quite often, so I usually just search the registry using the 'F3' key. You'll probably need to search the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT key for '\\', which may produce a lot of results. Just keep hitting 'F3' until you find a reference to a server or IP address that no longer exists.

There may be an easier way to search the registry (RegistryScanner or ???). Someone else may be able to recommend a way.

I started with a fresh install of Win7 Ultimate on the laptop I am using, and quickly noticed that there is a delay of ~5-10 seconds any time I try to do any action which reads from the hard drive. Starting new programs is the most affected. I've also noticed that programs I have open already, such as my instant messenger, will play sounds in a very delayed fashion as well. I will send a message and the "message sent" sound will play much later, after I'm already doing something else. If I leave my music player for a bit and then try to play a song, I have the same issue.

It seems like any I/O to the hard disk is being delayed by some arbitrary amount of time. This is very noticeable and I'm wondering what I can do to work this out. I've disabled a few services and made sure my background processes weren't using up too much memory/cpu.

A:Huge access delay for majority of files

Try this first. Open an elevated command prompt (start-type cmd in the search box-right click-select run as administrator) When the command prompt opens copy and paste this into the window sfc /scannow that is a system file checker. It will test the integrity of system files and repair them if it can. If it comes back and says it found no integrity issues you will be reasonably assured that the OS is OK. Next download the diagnostic program from the manufacturers website for whatever brand of hard drive you have. It is also possible you have a virus. Download Malwarebytes - free and install it and run a complete scan of your computer. Let us know the results of those tests.
Also, it is helpful to us if you fill out your system specs. It helps us know what hardware we are dealing with so we can help you better.

Hi, I have a strange problem. One of our users is using Office XP on a fully patched Windows 2k machine (512 MB RAM, 1.5 Ghz, fast machine). Whenever she tries to open an Office file using any method other than File -> Open (i.e. double-clicking in Explorer, opening e-mail attachments, etc) she gets a 1.5 minute delay before the file will open. This occurs in Excel, Powerpoint, and Word. I haven't tried Access.

Here's what I've tried:
- Rebooted in Safe Mode, double-clicking on a word file opens fine. Problem does not occur in Safe Mode.
- Uninstalled, deleted all registry entries, and reinstalled Office.
- Moved .dot files out of the template folder and the startup folder (googling has turned this up as an occasional problem).
- Removed all networked printers (googling has turned this up as an occasional problem).
- Defragged and error checked her hard drive.

I am not having this problem with any other software program.

Any ideas?

I have been noticing randomly delay or lag in my Windows Explorer whenever I do operations such as create new folder or files, copy/paste files, or rename files.

By lag, what I mean is that lets say I rename a file from "File A" to File B", I don't see the change in the file name instantaneously. It takes few seconds I have to press F5 to refresh the window to actually see the changes.
I am running on Windows 8.1

A:Lag/Delay in Explorer when Renaming Copying Creating Files

I joined the forum to bring up the same complaint.

I 'upgraded' last week, from Win 7 HP sp1(different laptop) and from win 8 to 8.1 (this laptop via Windows Store).

Superfetch and indexing are not turned off. Accessing files in various devices seem to take forever compared to win 7.

Yesterday, I spent some time using the file explorer to rename and organize files on an external hard drive. Soon enough, the system came grinding to a slow crawl. Bringing up task manager took 'forever'. Eventually, it showed the explorer utilizing over 2GB of memory (6GB total in system). After closing the explorer window, the memory was not released. I had to restart explorer.exe to release the memory. Once I replicated the event, I began to wonder if this is unique to my machine or inherent in the OS.

I generally use XNView as my file manager. But, it wasn't performing as well as it should, or as well as it had been with Win 7. That's why I tried to bypass the middle man in XNView.

With Win 7, the external devices spin down after time has passed. There would always be lag while the accessed device spin up. With Win 8.1, the spin down seemed to be next to no time passing. I spend 5 to 10 seconds being careful in what I'm doing with the files, I have to deal with the lag before the action takes effect.

In summary, there is the explorer 'memory leak?' and the quick spin down of external devices, both affecting the performance of the file explorer.

For the last several years, I have noticed that newly copied files do not show up immediately in Explorer.exe on the Win7 platform or a Win2008R2 share when viewed on a network share on a Win 7 machine. (I guess that's nothing to do with Server2008, if I'm viewing the share on a Win 7 platform!!)

For example if I view the directory contents in details view, I have to sort several times (A-Z then Z-A) or even switch the sort criteria to date, then back to name, etc. before a file that has been moved or copied is visible. This is an extreme PIA and makes me second guess my save location, my ability to organize, my sanity ... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Am I alone in this? No way right? I have been putting up with this BS for a long time and I apologize it took me this long to post about it. I did search for this before I posted this, but I did not get relevant hits on SevenForums.

I really like Win7 (I'm a Mac devotee but Win 7 is a good OS) but this quirk is the WORST. Anyone concur?

Ever since clearing-out some old, no longer used apps from "Add/Remove Programs" (Control Panel) to free-up additional space on our hard drive, a pain in the drain "FLASHLIGHT" pops-up every time we go to open "My Computer". It lasts several
seconds until the drive listings appear and the screen populates. "My Computer" is the only place this is happening, and as I said, appears to be the result of having deleted old programs no longer in use. Microsoft wrote a report on the problem, but it does nothing to resolve the issue. They say its USB, HP printer, cable modem related or Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)-related, but none of these fixes work (FYI, MS article #819017). Any suggestions would be appreciated-

(BTW..."My Computer" loads at normal speeds with no flashlights in Safe Mode)

thanks

Title I wanted to use: Windows XP SP3: Slow Startup / Boot: Black Screen Delay & Delay after logging in

For some reason I can't preview my post when I use this title: I have tried removing all the punctuation, including the &, which doesn't work and have tried other titles with the same character length, which does work.

Problem Begins Here:

When I turn on or restart my computer, the boot up time from the time I press the power button to the time the final icon on my desktop loads is slow. I am not too concerned about the time after my desktop is shown since I have several items to run at startup.

The two areas of concern are:

1) After the XP logo is shown, my screen goes black. This lasts for about 17 to 19 seconds. I don't know when this started as I rarely restart my computer. The problem is worse if I startup in Safe Mode. It's about 1 minute and 10 seconds before I see anything on the screen, and another 40 seconds before something else is shown on screen. Note: In order to not to have to waste time pressing F8 and choosing Safe Mode, I enter safe mode by specifying so in msconfig. The options I chose were /SAFEBOOT and Minimal.

2) After I login, there is a delay of about 30 to 45 seconds before the desktop is shown. Windows stays at the login confirmation screen during that time. This I feel has happened recently.

Boot Time Results tested using a stopwatch:

Normal Boot (i.e. Not Safe Mode):
Time shown next to event is for when ... Read more

After the Windows 10 April 2018 update, my Lenovo Yoga 3 14 laptop is not starting immediately. It's not boot-up delay, it's a device start-up delay like after pressing the power button, just keyboard back light blinks once and nothing will happen and it's taking 35 to 40 seconds (earlier it's 1 to 3 seconds) after pressing the power button to show Lenovo UEFI screen along with Windows loading animation (this boot-up is quick like earlier versions about 5 to 7 seconds). Re-installed the complete OS (clean install) and re-installed the BIOS (Version BACNA0WW and BIOS date 07/15/2016). But nothing helps. Changed to earlier version of windows with clean install (the one with creators update, but issue not resolved.) Formatted complete drive and cleared all partitions (including OEM) and installed on a fresh partition, re-flashed BIOS, but nothing helps. Later I thought about hardware issue. Opened laptop, removed display connector, cleaned and attached, but issue not resolved. So, it's not a new Windows issue and It might be a problem with BIOS and it needs to be updated. Since my laptop is mote than 3 years old, Lenovo probably don't bother about updating this BIOS. Any solution that I missed? Thanks in advance.

Help please. For some time now I've had this problem when opening internet explorer and files and folders on my home network. Ok first let me explain the symptoms of Internet Explorer.

When I go to open IE it freezes for about 10-20 seconds like it's waiting or searching for something. Even when I select blank as my homepage it still freezes.

Also when I try to access my other computer on the network it freeezes for about the same time when I click or right click on the file. I have to wait ages before the menu pops up. I'm also having this problem when I right click on a file and I get to the 'sendto' option. It goes down the list and freezes at this point but as far as I can see there isn't any network drives in there so I'm stumped with that one.

I've deleted and reinstalled all network connections, set everything to default and checked on my other PC that the settings are the same but it's still locking up.

Important to note that when I try to access files on this PC from the 2nd computer there is no problem. It's only one way which means the cables and connection must be fine and the problem must be on my PC. I'm not sure what else to check and why it's suddenly started running slow. Once I've opened Internet Explorer it works fine going from site to site. But if I close it down and try again it freezes liek the progress bar is stuck. During this time my network icon (the 2 monitors) is showing no activ... Read more

I have a Windows 8.1 Desktop.
I installed a 2.5" WD second hard drive, formatted it and all was fine.
I then removed the 2.5" HD, put it in an external usb case and transferred files from my Windows XP laptop.
When I put the HD back into the desktop, there were no files on the disk, said something like 951GB / 951GB free.
I removed it again and checked using the XP laptop / usb case and all the files are shown.
All HDs on the desktop / laptop are formatted NTFS.

thanks

Have you tried Easy Transfer? Also, you might have problems transferring from 32 bit to 64 bit computer.

I want to extract a .zip file of Windows icons in XP.

To which folder should I extract them?

A:Where Should Icon Packs Be Extracted To?

make a new folder on your drive and name it icons and then when you want to change an icon to one you have unzipped, point it towards the folder you have created "icons"
it's not like Fonts, that has it's own folder - icons are usually associated with the program or app - when you want to change them, you have to tell the program or app where the new icon is that you want to use

My girlfriend called and complained to me that all her files are gone on her computer. She explained that the black cmd screen came up saying that files were being deleted. I assumed she had a virus and there wasn't a whole lot that could be done to get the files back. However, when I randomly looked in the Windows folder, I noticed that all the files were missing from there as well. This is strange to me as Windows was in fact running without fine (minus the missing files). All the programs work fine, but all the folders show up as empty. I went into folder options and changed the option to show hidden files and still I got nothing. I also used the xp cd to run chkdsk /r and it came up with a BSOD Stop error after trying to boot into windows. I had to run fixmbr to get Windows up again. Maybe the problems are related. Do you have any ideas on what this might be?

A:Files (including windows folder files) not showing up.

Update: The files in the Windows directory seem to have come back. Not sure how that happened, so now I'm trying out some file recovery software to see if I can find anything.

Best to run some scans if you suspect malware or adware.

Download and install the free version of MalwarebytesNote: If you have Malwarebytes already installed, you don't need to install it again. Simply start from the next bullet point
Once Malwarebytes is installed, launch it and let it update its database. You might have to click on the little arrow by Scan Status in the middle right pane for it to do so
Once the database update is complete, click on the Scan tab, then select the Threat Scan button and click on Start Scan
Let the scan run, the time required to complete the scan depends of your system and computer specs
Once the scan is complete, make sure that the first checkbox at the top is checked (which will automatically check every detected item), then click on the Quarantine Selected button
If it asks you to restart your computer to complete the removal, do so

Click on Export Summary after the deletion (in the bottom-left corner) and select Copy to Clipboard. Paste the content in your next reply
If you are unable to run a scan using MBAM:
Follow the instructions in the thread below. Make sure to download the MBAR linked in it. Let me know if you're not able to launch it and run a scan.https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/198907-requested-resource-is-in-use-error-unable-to-start-malwarebytes/

Hi All, thanks for reading.
I have this bug type issue, when i extract files from either a .zip or .rar, every now and then when i go to delete the extracted files they appear to stay where they where, be it on the desktop usually or a specific folder, the files however have actually been sent to the bin but they still appear to remain where they were extracted too.
The only way i can make them go away is by stopping explorer in DM and restarting, then the 'ghost' files have gone from the desktop or folder.
I am totally up to date with updates, i ran all sorts of scans but nothing seems to stop this occurring from time to time which is also annoying because it doesn't happen every time !!!

Any ideas peeps

In an OpenOffice (version 3) text document it is possible to insert a table containing merge fields that are populated from a relational database.

It is also possible to perform calculations on cells, as in a spreadsheet. That is, a formula editor allows a cell to contain a formula that will display the result of a calculation on two other cells of the table.

This works perfectly with hard-coded data in the cells but I have been unable to find a way to perform calculations on cells containing merge fields representing data from an external source. All attempts to do so have produced an "Expression is faulty" message with no further hint. I have been unable to find anything relating to this in the somewhat chaotic OpenOffice documentation.

The aim is to convert a spreadsheet-based invoicing system to run from a relational database, thus eliminating duplicated data such as company names and addresses, and making integration with other documents using some of the same data easier and more efficient.

Can anyone help, please?

A:Calculating on fields extracted from database in OpenOffice

it may be the imported data from the data base is TEXT rather than a number to calc
in excel you can use =value() to convert a number thats formated as text into a number

I just tested in OpenOffice Calc and it has the same issue

format a cell as TEXT put a number in and it is right justified and will not calc
use =value() to convert to a number
now you can calc
