I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, My sound is super quiet, when I open the playback device screen I can clearly see that even with the volume on full, the green bars are only ever lit up by around 10%. I have updated all drivers, including BIOS, and audio of course, and also performed all updates. I have even turned it off and on again  Can anyone help? This seems to be a consistent issue. I have Bang & Olfsen speakers on this notebook and that's why I bought it - pretty annoyed that I can't fix this! Any contributions welcome. Thanks!

Hi,
From what you say I think you need to post a HijackThis log and then wait for someone qualified (gold shield next to their name) to take you through what needs to be done. Please go no further than the steps below and posting your results for now.You may want to print off this guide just in case.

Using Hijackthis with the self-installer that puts it into Program Files for you:

go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.

Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.

Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.

Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.

Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Once you've done this, hang on for further guidance.

Richard.

Yesterday I spent two hours opening a Radeon 5850, cleaning and lubing it. It was noisy as hell and now it's quiet, so time well spent.

A:My most complex surgery I ever did

Did you happen to document your progress? Like take pictures of the before, during and after? How about recording fan speeds and temps for the before and after? What did you use to clean it?
Just thinking if someone comes here looking for information on how to do what you just did, by having such information attached, it may very well help that person make a decision on doing it themselves versus bringing it to a "Computer Repair" shop.

Presario V3000 laptop, XP, NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150, drivers up to date, so Windows says.

Modem went out, sent to HP twice. Finally fixed. They had to change main board. Now it looks like a wide screen TV receiving nonHD signal and stretching it to full screen. What should be a square is wider than tall.

Also seems to be glary. White fonts on desktop under icons were opaque until I changed to bold font. Menu font (black) sometimes seems to fade together.

It's probably settings, but I don't know where.

I can call HP (AGAIN) but (no offense to anyone) I just hate to talk to people I have trouble understanding. Thought someone here might be able to help.

Appreciate any help.

Good morning, all! I would like to transplant a Samsung EVO 850 SSD into my Ideapad Z580 notebook from another machine of mine. The SSD has a different OS on it (Linux Mint) than what is on the Lenovo's HDD (which is Windows 8.1), and it is also half the size of the HDD (SSD=250GB, HDD=500GB). When I attempted the transplant, the Lenovo would not boot up past the opening screen and gave me an error message that stated something along the lines of (it went by fast, so I couldn't get the exact wording) "PCI (?) media test failure, please check cable." When I put the original HDD back in there, it booted up as though nothing had happened. I'm wondering why this happened, and would putting a new SSD in there to do a clean install of my OS of choice be preferable? Also, when I attempted to use both a USB drive and a disc to install my OS of choice on it, I could not get it to boot from either of those options in BIOS. What am I doing wrong, here?

A:Ideapad Brain Surgery Not Working!

I would expect it to work.  Are you sure the SSD is good?

Hi all,
Haven't made a post in a long time and I'm surprised my account is still active.

Here's the verdict; my laptop came shipped with an OEM Windows Vista installation. I wanted to dual-boot it with Windows XP but needed XP on the C: partition (plus the issue with older version of windows should be installed before a new version is installed) forced me to re-format, install XP SP3, install all the drivers and bring me to what it is now.

My laptop is fully functioning with Windows XP. I have a Linux Ubuntu 8.04 CD, Windows Vista OEM dvd and windows xp sp3 cd at hand. I want to dual boot my system with either windows vista, linux, or both.

Please answer these two questions:

1.) If I create a new partition and install Vista on the new partition, is it possible to upgrade the Vista installation to Windows 7 WITHOUT DOING ANY HARM AT ALL TO THE XP PARTITION OR IT'S BOOT LOADER? So I will then have a dual boot system with Windows XP and 7 (and both OS's fully working)?

2.) If I install Linux in a new partition alongside my XP partition will it be possible to install vista on a third partition AFTER I have installed Linux? So the order in which the operating systems have been installed would be:
- 1. Windows XP installed first
- 2. Linux Ubuntu installed second
- 3. Windows Vista installed third

Any help will be very much appreciated (as long as it's from someone who knows what they are talking about).

Thanks

Yes, as the thread title partially suggests, I ran disk cleanup, Eraser, unhide, rkill, Fixexec, Combofix, and finally Malwarebytes in a normal boot, without being asked by a helper. I have other minor computer issues and although neither new issues nor previous issues were caused or exacerbated by Combofix, respectively, I feel you should know about them.

Why? Took the advice of another forum and I think they are erroneous. The professionalism and shear number of threads and guides I have seen here suggests this.

AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn All-Southeastern Conference linebacker K.J. Britt will undergo thumb surgery.
Team spokesperson Kirk Sampson said Thursday that Britt is scheduled to undergo surgery on Friday, a day before the 13th-ranked Tigers host Arkansas. It wasn't immediately clear how long Britt will be out.
Britt is leading the team with 23 tackles through two games, including one tackle for loss. He was a first-team Associated Press All-SEC pick last season and is a team captain.
Britt had 69 tackles last season, including 10 for a loss and 2.5 sacks. Freshman Wesley Steiner is listed as his backup.
Fellow linebacker Chandler Wooten had already opted out for the season.

I have tried this thing on my machine 4-5 times and it has given me grief each time. I don't know if it is hardware or what but the thing starts off fine and then "whack" something goes up.

I have installed it on a fresh install of windows with out ever connecting to the internet so spyware and virus issues are not the problem.

Also, this "fix all" has just as many security updates it seems as sp1 did, Sp1 was a worthwhile upgrade. Sp2 seems to be just the opposite. I guess when I upgrade to 64 it might take it better but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

Some say it goes off with out a hitch, I ain't that lucky. What the hell Microsoft? I use your products faithfully, get the coders back on this and FIX it.

For the moment I am XP pro sp1. I ain't brave enough to do this crap again. The last install lasted less than a day before it had me totally screwed, Thank god for spyware blaster, adwatch, spybots immunize, norton and zone zlarm pro. This is where I am at. Be back later to see if anybody has any idea what I am doing wrong. I run the upgrade advisor and it says "do it'. I guess if MS said to jump off the bridge I'd try it at least once.

Hi,

I have a Presario laptop that came pre-loaded with Vista Home Premium. I've had it for barely 2 weeks now. For some reason when i started it up today, the following were missing
- the windows start button
- the entire desktop
- windows sidebar
- system tray

the only window that was open is the Documents window. It was apparent that the explore.exe file was in trouble. I opened C:\Windows and double-clicked explorer.exe and it opened another Documents window. So, I went to the task manager and ended the explorer.exe process and then manually started it again using File > New Task and typing in 'explorer.exe' and everything started working fine. But when i did a re-boot, I had the same problem again ( i.e missing desktop, sys tray etc.).

I've tried system restore and it did not help. I did not get Vista discs with the laptop so i cannot perform a repair off discs. Does anybody know how i can replace the explorer.exe in C\Windows (which is bust!) with a version of explorer.exe that runs when i manually start explorer.exe (which works!) in task manager??

Thanks..

Hi - can anyone advise - we have a sony vaio fr415s - 3 years old - the CD Rom has stopped working - you put a disk in (any type - music, ROM, DVD), and the motor clicks away in that annoying "what is this?" way, before giving up. Hardware profile shows the device to be 'working', with no old drivers to roll back to. It doesn't work in Safe Mode, so I don't think it's a new software install that's causing the problem. I assume the CD drive is broken.
I can source a replacement (pioneer K12DVA), but since this drive was unreliable, does anyone know if you can use alternative IDE drives in laptops, or are they all machine-specific?

Cheers,

Paul

Hi all,

Last posted 2013 with queries re my first build. Specs here:
Specs are:
Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 58 Stepping 9
Processor Count: 4
RAM: 16341 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660, -2048 Mb
1 x SSD Drive: C: Total - 457632 MB, Free - 418126 MB;(Crucial M500 480 GB SSD)
Motherboard: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd., Z77X-UP5 TH-CF (Wi-Fi included)
Antivirus: ESET Smart Security 6.0, Updated and Enabled [and consistently updated to date]
MalwareBytes Anti Malware [consistently updated to date]

This has been a good build but the Crucial SSD is nearly 90% full and I don't want a new build...
It's mainly a gaming/MMOs computer.I'm wondering about the best items to upgrade?

I am going to be adding storage memory. Probably 1 more Crucial SSD for consistency.
So I might as well max RAM to 32GB as I have the case open anyway.
If I upgrade to a newer NVIDIA GPU, is it necessary to always put in a new CPU?
I'd expect to upgrade to Windows 10 also after that.
The build has been fine generally, and keeps well in temperature limits etc.
(We use our old Sony Bravia 40" TV as a monitor.)

Basically, it ain't bust so the above is not a fix...but would welcome all thoughts on if my ideas would seem to work in theory, as outlined.

Thanks all.

Can I re-install Windows XP Home on a corrupted computer without changing e-mail (OE) settings or ms office files?

A:Clean Intall or Bust

In a nutshell, yes. You'll be selecting the 'install in place' type which over-installs Windows to the previous (or different) location. Do NOT do the complete re-install which will then prompt for a reformatting of the HD.

That being said, I'm not a big fan of the install in place. Either fix what's wrong or backup stuff and reformat.

I own a 4 1/2-year-old Dell Inspiron 531 PC running Vista. For more than three years Media Center Was reliable and I enjoyed being able to use the remote control. During the last six months, however, all I have to do to lock up the PC is start WMC. The only way to get my PC working again is to run Task Manager and log off.

None of my system files is missing or damaged, so I have no idea why WMC is useless. At first I substituted VLC, which squished my movies, many of which are DVD-r. Windows Media Player chokes on DVD-r discs. Out of desperation I tried Realplayer, which works perfectly.

As far as I know Microsoft doesn't offer a WMC download -- a serious flaw as far as I'm concerned. So, WMC just sits on my PC, taking up space and doing nothing. I recommend Realplayer (the free version) to anyone who wants to avoid the frustration of using Media Center.

where I have the exact same issue as speedy0926.

I'vegone through all of the steps as speedy0926 has but I have no Cookiegalto tell me what to do. Can one of you be my Cookiegal?
So now I have a hijack this log file, a combofix log file and also an OTScanIt log file.
Ineed someone like Cookiegal from the thread above to decipher my HijackThis log file (tell me what if anything to delete from my file system)and then help me to create a OTScanIt fix script...

I will notpost my combofix or OTScanIt logs until someone requests it, I think Iread that in one of the forum rules. But my HijackThis is attached.

Thanks in advance.
Regards.

A:Naturally... please help

let me give a little clearer background to this post

First this is not my computer so I'm doing this as a favor and I can't be sure how it really got infected.

All I know is that AOL and McAffe was installed on this laptop - of which I've already removed because imo AOL and McAffe both stink.

Anyhow there was a blinking icon in the system tray that was flashing and any time it was clicked it would go to AntiSpyCheck.com.

After looking it up on google I knew it was a malware of some sort.

Then tracking the steps in the tech support guy forum link above I've gotten to the point of having a HiJackThis log.

I also ran ComboFix which has gotten rid of the flashing system tray icon. So I have a log file for that as well.

And I've run OTScanIt... and I have a log file for that as well.

I'm sitting in safe mode looking to install adaware or anything recommended here in the forum but I get a message something to the effect that the administrator won't allow installation (just like speedy in the link above)

Bottom line is.. I have a three log files and no idea how to decipher them so I'm looking for a little guidence as to what my next step should be.

Thanks.

Hi,
I?ve been having various problems with my laptop for several days now. I?m not tech savvy but would like to know if the problems are due to malware or something else.

Currently, Windows Updater software no longer works for me (selected downloads fail to complete). Also when running some software I am getting error messages e.g. ?e.dll was not found? but the name of the missing .dll changes between computer sessions, o.dll and a.dll have been reported last two sessions. The software does run OK after the error reports. Scarily I get a BSOD when opening Firefox version 3 or higher but version 2 runs OK, BSOD error is ?Page_Fault_In_Nonpaged_Area?.

Problems began when I found my audio & video stuttering. I used CCleaner to clear out temp files and tidy registry and did a defrag. I think I tried to update my NVidia drivers but didn?t complete that and so did a system restore. It was after the system restore that problems became worse. Following the system restore, after starting up the laptop a DOS like box would appear and there would then be an error message to do with nvsvc.dll not being a valid Win32 application and a problem with ntvdm.exe., was also getting some sort of ?Bad Image? error. Taking those errors to have something to do with the Nvidia drivers I replaced them. Following this was when Firefox began crashing and I noticed that Windows updater and the other problems mentioned began. Fearing a hard drive problem I ran chkdsk but don?t really understand wha... Helo,

The switch that I press to turn on my Acer Aspire 1693 laptop has been temperamental for a while, but hsa now finally packed in. I took off the plastic panel to have a look, and it's on of those "pop-up" switches. I can only describe it as being similar to a jam jar lid after breaking the seal, where the metal lid "pops" up after pressing down. In my frustration/desperation I have dug out the inside of the switch, hoping that I could bypass it by shoving a piece of metal between two points every time I wanted the laptop on, but to no avail.

Once I get it on this once, I'll be OK cause I'll just "Standby" instead of Shutting Down, cause I'll be able to use the space bar to turn on the laptop.

Can anyone give me any advice on this? Is there a way to replicate the power button's function by using a combination of other buttons? What is the best way of bypassing the switch electronically (i.e. by completing the circuit)? Also, if all fails, will it cost me an arm and a leg to get it sorted in a shop?

Thank you.

Hi
I got a friend who has bought Naturally Speaking 9 Standard Edition and he is running Windows Vista Home basic edition on a laptop..
He also has AVG Anti Virus free version..
Here is the question..
When he goes to run the software, Naturally Speaking it tells him he needs to turn off his Anti Virus before it will work..
I didn't think this was a good idea, so any ideas on how to get around this problem??
Thanks..

Unless I am wrong, the last time I used Dragon, it wasn't Vista compatible?

Wonder of this could be the problem?

Has anyone used Dragon Naturally Speaking and care to relate their thoughts on it. Or reccomend another voice to type program. I'm considering the purchase of one and would just like to know what the thoughts are of someone who may have given one a shot already. Thanks in advance for any input.

A:Naturally Speaking

I used Dragon a while ago, and it worked well. The only thing is you have to train ANY program you buy to your voice. That was a bit cumbersome for me, so I gave it up. But other than that, I think Dragon is the best option on the market.

I have sort of a "for fun" rig I built. Its an old pentium 3 server board with 2 933mhz pentium 3's , a gig of ram , and an x1600 pro. I installed windows xp on it about a month ago along with the drivers for the video card , and left it unconnected to the internet to avoid viruses all together. Or anything that could slow it down from gamming. (I planned to see how well it can do in more modern games , not bad actually).

But sure enough it would somtimes feeze right after booting , then slowly would take more and more reboots to get it to stay on. Till one day it booted with a distorted screen on the login screen. Until it eventually never made it into windows past the loading screen (just blackness).

I thought it was the powersupply going bad , but I put in a linux cd and sure enough it booted perfectly into linux and ran fine off the cd. I then reinstalled windows xp and it booted fine.

SO my question is , with no internet connection or anything installed but games , does windows just naturally wear out like that?

A:Naturally degradeing.

I had thought it didnt, but maybe it does.

Hello,

I am not very computer literate so bear with me. I bought A Dragon 9.5 which is a voice dictation unit. I printed out the specs before I bought and gave to my husband because he's supposedly "the self proclaimed expert". He told me it was fine for my computer, I bought it and found out that it will not run because I only have 384 MB RAM and Dragon requires 512 MB RAM.
OK, this is a screw-up. Is it possible to buy more RAM for my computer which is a Gateway model EV 700 or what is my option that is the least expensive?

Thank you
Olivebranch

A:Dragon Naturally Speaking 9.5 help

The "Gateway EV 700" is actually only the model of the computer screen, we would need to know the model of the computer that goes with it.
