Q: remote desktop connect issue via MS remote desktop app

Ive followed the instructions to a T, & cannot get a remote access connection to my computer using the "Microsoft remote desktop connection" app for iOS. Ive watched youtube videos and followed other directions only to no avail. When I signed up for internet & installed the modem/router(s), the first thing i did was alter my routers default wireless gateway from a 192.168.x.x to my own gateway for security reasons. I also changed the default web interface login credentials. So i am familiar with the web UI of routers & I have spent many hours looking up most of the options that can be configured in the web UI of the many routers I have used & I dont think it has to do with the web UI, I think its something that involves my PC settings. I have another remote desktop app that flawlessly connects to my PC & is extremely fluid in its access, but its a third party app on an inactive andriod device. I'd really like to use the "official" Microsoft remote desktop connection app on my active iOS device &, just as important, know & understand what is preventing access to my computer with this app. I also use the "mobile mouse" app as a remote mouse & keyboard for my computer & its on my active iOS device. So any help is much appreciated

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

You have to be able to open the ports for RDP on your router/gateway, along with if you have a Dynamic IP that may change, have to use a Dynamic DNS option like OpenDNS. You would really be better off using Teamviewer.

So, I had remote desktop working on my computer for about two years and now it doesn't work anymore. Every time I try to access it from another computer (I don't have and don't know how to get a domain name, so I just use my IP address, which I get from whatismyip.com), I get an error message saying I cannot connect to the remote computer.

As far as I know, I have done everything right. I enabled remote desktop in system properties, I created a static IP address in TCP/IP properties, and I configured my router to forward the default port (3389) to the correct local IP address I specified. I have disabled windows firewall and put mstsc on my list of exceptions for the firewall that I use (BitDefender). I also pinged my IP address and received all packets sent.

I am running windows xp professional with sp3.

Any suggestions?

try using the computer name to connect right click on the my computer icon and select properties and then the computer name use the full computer name. while your in there check the remote tab make sure the allow user to connect remotely to this computer is checked. on both pc's. also make sure both machines have xp pro i know you can only go one way between pro and home edition can't remember which.

We have several remote systems that can all connect fine. I am having an issue with one box. It is a windows 7 home premium machine with netgear wireless nic. When I open mstsc to connect to a remote machine I put in the ip address and click on connect. I receive an immediate failure with the text "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again...blah blah"

I have a server 2008 r2 with Network level authentication enabled. I have 8 other systems that are hardwired, at different geographic locations and all connect fine.

I have not made any changes on the server side since this problem seems to be local to this client only.

On the client I have made the following changes/observations. I have disabled the firewall, cleared the remote desktop cache, remove the MRU entries from the registry, verified that port 3389 is open via telnet. I have been bashing my head for days trying to figure out why this one box is not working. The problem occurs for every user on the box including the admin.

I don't receive the box that prompts for warning if there is a server authentication issue but I think that is because I selected ignore at some point and said yes to continue. I'm not sure where that cache resides to delete that selection. I'm not sure if that is where my problem lies or not. Can anyone please assist?

Click on Start and type secpol.msc. Then go to Local Security Policy=> Local Policies=> User Rights Assigment=> Choose Allow Log on Locally and select the User or Group that needs to access this computer remotely. Also select Allow Logon to Remote Desktop Services (if you have RDS or Terminal Services configured in your Win08 Server). Try to remote connect after.

After installing an update for QuickBooks it needed to restart the computer. After doing so I could no longer connect to this computer via remote desktop. This computer is a workstation in an Active Directory domain. Remote Desktop Access is controlled by
Group Policy. All other Windows computers in this domain can be accessed via Remote Desktop. This computer can also remote desktop to these other computers. On the settings, Remote Desktop is set to "Allow connections from computers running any version
of Remote Desktop." I've verified the Remote Desktop port is enabled in the firewall. I've taken down the firewall completely. I powered off and back on the computer several times. I've run 'gpupdate /Force'. This computer can access the network, including
shared drives, can access the Internet and can Remote Desktop to other computers. This computer can ping other computers, but other computers cannot ping it. Other computers can no longer mount this computer's shared drive. In case there was some update-culprit
lurking that didn't take effect until I restarted, I rebooted other workstations in the office to see if the same thing would happen. It didn't. Only this computer.
I've spent hours on this and search for all kinds of solutions. I've out of ideas. Anybody?

I have windows xp home edition on both of my computers, and they do have a remote desktop program, but ive found out that windows xp pro actually has a better version of it that will actually work. I cant get the windows xp home version of it to work. Is there anyone that knows of a free remote desktop program, or if someone would be able to send the windows xp pro version of the remote desktop program.

XP Home has "Remote Assistance", while XP Pro has both "Remote Desktop", as well as "Remote assistance". You can download from Microsoft, a Remote Desktop "add on" which will enable your computer to become the "client" but not the "server".

OS: Win8 64bit (My desktop is Win8, my laptop is Win7. We're dealing with the desktop here.)
Where I am: university network, but these features seem to be working with my laptop.
Things I've checked: allowing services through Windows Firewall (Bonjour, WMC services, etc.)
Allowing remote services in System Properties
Many, many existing threads and non-solutions
How I'm feeling:

None of these features or applications work, and they're all supposed to function differently from one another (e.g. WMC doesn't use the Apple Bonjour service, so it isn't a program-specific problem). I just want to control my media system with my desktop
Is there some obscure service or file or setting that I'm missing that could prevent any remote applications?

I am trying to connect to a remote server but all I get is the error that the Remote Desktop Gateway is not available. I have tried accessing the same remote server from another PC (windows 8.1) and it is working.
I tried connecting to other remote server and get same error. I have not usde remote desktop before until now.

i have a question about remote connection, but i don't know exactly what kind of solution i'm looking for...

i have a desktop with quad-cpu and much bigger memory, and i have another laptop which is old and slow. My thinking is to make a server on the desktop, so that the laptop could share the cpu time and memory from desktop.

That is to say: there could be two persons in front of both computers, they log in using own username and they should not interrupt each others work, but all the programs should run on the desktop computer.

So Remote Desktop, VNC or TeamViewer etc. don't really match my needs...

I don't really know what we call this technology, but i know that citrix have this kind of business solution, what i wanna know is if there are any usable free or inexpensive solutions for personal/non-commercial use?

There may be alternatives to Citrix, but the concept is basically to access a remote desktop on server where you run applications installed on server. If the performance is adequate you will gain in bandwidth and licensing costs, but the scenario you describe implies that the laptop should somehow share the resources of the server, physically(?)...

I am currently unaware of any inexpensive "citrix" solutions but I would think that is what you are after. Logging on the server, starting an app on server, but managing it on the laptop.

Have you looked in to a HDD and RAM upgrade of the Laptop?

I have a desktop HP (windows 7) and a new macbook pro 15 on which i am running both mac os x and windows 7. I can connect from my desktop to my laptop using remote desktop connection but not the other way around. I have a network set up and can see the computers are connected. I opened port 3389, enabled remote access on both machines, turned off firewall, avg, everything but nothing works. Whenever i try to connect it says initiating remote connection for a while then says 1) remote access is to the server is not enabled 2) the remote computer is turned off, 3) the remote computer is not available on the network. Btw both machines have Win 7 Ultimate. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am facing an issue while attempting Remote Desktop Connection from Windows 7 Professional machine.
When trying to take an RDP of a Windows 2016 Server using "MSTSC - Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection" I get an error " This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner
of the remote computer or your network administrator."
However, when I select the "Connect and don't warn me" option in the advanced section of Server Authentication Tab (MSTSC), it connects.
Can anyone please guide me to resolve this problem ? Do I need to make changes at the server end or the Desktop level ?
The version of Remote Desktop Connection I am using is "Shell Version 6.2.9200, Remote Desktop Protocol 8.0 Supported"

I know there are other products out there, like vnc, ultravnc, teamviewer etc etc, but really nothing beats the sheer speed of remote desktop, it's like sitting in front of the actual computer. I also know about Remote Assistance built into Windows 7.

I would like to use remote desktop to do the following if possible.

1. I would like to know if there is a way, to not lock the host machine that you are connected to?, so the user can see what you are doing?.

2. Is there a way that Remote desktop can be used without logging off the logged in account?, or just use the logged in account?

I would like to use Remote Desktop for a remote helpdesk solution if possible. If anyone knows how to do this things I am asking it would be the people on this board.

I am trying to use my computer running Windows XP Home to remote desktop into my computer running Windows 7 Ultimate over the internet.

The computer I am trying to connect to is listening on port 3389, has all sort of firewall exceptions sorted and is enabled to accept remote connections. The computer I am trying to use to connect has no firewall currently (I have disabled it just to get this working).

And yet when I try and connect using the ip address of the host computer I receive the message "remote desktop cannot connect to the remote computer for one of the following reasons"... and so on.

What else do I need to do now to get this working?

I used to be able to log into Citrix and then go to my remote desktop. However, my computer was slow/family was complaining, so I downloaded MyFasterPC (I know bad thing to do) and after I ran the scan, my computer was faster, however, now I can't get to my remote desktop to the site that I work for. I can log into Citrix. My username/password work, however, when I go to click ont he V__remote desktop, it just makes a clicking sound and then nothing happens. I get this message:

Some of your resources cannot be reconnected even though they may be available for reconnection. If this message does not usually appear during your sessions, contact your system administrator.

I know this account works, because if I log on to my laptop and go to this site, everything works great.

I have goggled a lot of things, and it is to technical or don't really answer my question. I would like to get this working again on my home computer as it is quicker than going through the laptop wireless.

Any help is appreciated. I think something happened in my registry when I did the MYFASTERPC.

Also, I did go and remote the Citrix plug in and then re-install the Citrix plug in. Again, I can log in, but can't get to my remote desktop

I am having problems connecting to my PC using (MS) Remote Desktop.
When I run netstat -a I cannot see any service listening on port 3389.

I did have pcAnywhere installed (which I have since removed) and I am wondering if this has kicked off the problem.

im not promising that this will solve the problem but when i tried to use remote desktop. THIS WORKED FOR ME. and im not sure if it will work for you. i had to change something in the local security settings. I forgot what it was but i think this is it. Start > controll panel > adminstrative tools > local security policy . and under user rights assignments there is access this computer from a network and allow login thru terminal services. im not sure which one it is but i think its the 1st one. then under propertys do add user or group.. advanded... find now.... select all that are listed then OK. Also make sure that you have "Allow users toconnect to this computer remotly" enabled under system propertys. Then you should restart i guess. If this doesnet work than whatever... but thats what i did and it worked.

If i am wrong and it doesent work, then check out TightVNC. i use it to remotly controll computers over LAN you could use TightVNC as a alternitivate. I use it, its great. If your trying to connect over the internet. Use Radmin ... its the same as pcanywhere but smaller and easier to use. You have the choice to not use it, im not forcing you.

Not sure where to post this but I've been having a problem connecting to the office server from one of my laptops. This problem has only occurred on this one laptop, meanwhile every other computer I have has been able to successfully connect when I tested them out so I think there's something I've forgotten to do? Every time I type in the server address and click connect on this laptop, I get a:

"Remote desktop can't connect to the remote desktop for one of the following reasons: 1) Remote access to the server is not enabled (which it is) 2) Remote computer is turned off (it's not) 3) remote computer is not available on the network (pretty sure it is) Please make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled."

I tried turning off the firewalls but still get same message. Not sure what to do at this point. This laptop I'm on has windows 7.

I can remote desktop from host PC to laptop, I can ping both ways, but everytime I run remote desktop from laptop to host I get the "your remote desktop connection has ended, possibly for one of the following reasons

- The administrator has ended the session
- An error occurred while the connection was being established
- A network problem occurred

- Host PC is running XP Pro
- Laptop is running windows XP media center edition

I have tried all the updates I could find. Ran all the microsoft updates it autodected was missing and still can't get the laptop to remote desktop to the host PC any ideas? Any help would be great I am completely stuck and out of options to try.

Laptop and Host both now have static IP's. I am using usernames in the admin groups with passwords. Both machines have ports open. Allow users to connect on both computers are checked to allow.

Again any help you could provide would be awesome.

So I need some help. I currently work on a computer for a town, but I live 60 miles from there. I'm trying to get remote desktop to work to help me out with this.

The setup is as follows:

My computer: Windows Vista Home
The computer i'm trying to connect to: Windows XP Home SP2
Router: Belkin Wireless N

I've enabled remote desktop on both machines, obtained the IP addresses, and also went into virtual servers on the router and put in 3389 as the ports so that it is all enabled. I type in the IP address and after about 30 seconds of thinking it comes back as it can't connect. I've tried this from a Windows XP Pro to an XP Pro machine as well and still get the same result. I use it at work all the time, so i'm familiar with it, but its also used on a network at work. I could really use some help!

I have a desktop computer at home running windows 7 ultimate, and I'd like to be able to access it with my laptop, running windows XP home edition. I've configured my desktop to allow being connected to by all versions of remote desktop, and indeed I can connect to it with my laptop while at home (that is, when both desktop and laptop are in the same network). I do that by entering either the desktop computer's name or its private IP address (the one assigned by the router). I've made sure to forward the 3889 port to that specific computer.
Of course, the whole idea is to be able to access my desktop while not at home, but I can't seem to be able to do that. I enter the IP provided to me by my ISP, and I get the message that "this computer could not connect to the remote computer. try connecting again. if the problem persists, contact the owners of the remote computer or the network administrator" (I'm translating, my XP is in Hebrew). Trying again does not help.
Also, I don't know whether this is significant or not, but if I try to connect to my desktop with my laptop while at home, I can't do that by using the gateway's IP. I have to use the private IP address.
just to be sure, I've tried disabling the resident windows firewall and my antivirus, but it did not help.
I'd appreciate your help!

I was just trying to connect through Win7 to one of my systems using Remote Desktop Connection. I've done it several times before however something's wrong it's not working now. I even shut my AV Firewall and Windows Firewall off and I still can't connect. I checked to make sure RDC was enabled, I checked the services were up and running, I check to make sure the ports were properly forwarded, everything looks good. The one anomaly is when I ping the computer I'm trying to connect to I get "Request timed out." I just don't understand what has changed? I don't remember changing anything and it's been working. The system I'm trying to remote into is online connected to the net just fine. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hello all,

Today I setup a new user on my computer, smartly named Server (with an equally easy password ). Basically this is for my house mates.

Now, I've setup everything so we can all remote desktop connect and login as user Server, however I would like to know if two users can be logged in at once.

Basically, I wish my administrator user "Wade" can be logged in, while somebody remote desktop connects to Server and can do so, without Wade having to logout.

I am the administrator for my church's networked computers. My work computer is running Windows 7 Pro. I have a need to access my computer from home. My home computer is running Vista Ultimate 64. I sent an invitation from the work computer which I have received at home. When I double-click on the invitation file, the file opens in IE as html and I cannot connect to the remote computer. I have three computers that I use as "servers" that connect to during the day. One of them work perfectly. No matter what, I am able to connect all the time without issue. For the second, I can connect most of the time. But sometimes it just hangs and I am unable to log in. The third one, which I am asking about in this thread, I just tried to connect the first time and have not yet been able to do so.

1. I enabled remote desktop under system/remote settings
2. I enabled remote desktop through my firewall. I created a new rule that enabled incoming connections to 3391.
3. I enabled remote desktop services via services.msc
4. I programmed my router to forward port 3391 to my computers IP address
5. I am using no-ip to give me a static address (i.e., xxx.serveftp.com:3391) to use with remote desktop.

But after all that, I am unable to get this to work. Any ideas on how to fix the problem? Thanks.

We have a dlink di-524 wireless router connected to our surfboard sb4100 cable modem. This router has two different methods of accesses, four electrical ethernet ports and one wireless port. The problem only occurs when trying to access PC at the office using Windowís remote desktop. While this problem is occurring the laptop and desktop will still have access to the Internet. Thereís clearly something up with the router and hereís how Iíve been getting around it.

Power down dlink, make certain only PC#1 is powered up and connected to dlink. Power up the router, wait for the PC#1 to acquire IP address then launch browser and it navigates to google, next launch SonciWall VPN and it connects, open a remote desktop connection to office PC successfully. If all this works then Iíll make a record of the IP address. Then on PC#1 change LAN properties by un-checking DHCP, add IP data from >cmd ipconfig /all as static, recheck browser, reconnect VPN, reconnect RDC. Finally Iíll make similar static change to PC#2. As long as only one PC is powered or connected this crazy method works fine until the router looses power for whatever reason. Had our share of IP conflicts but this static process allows the RDC to work from multiple PC behind the same router.

I have a Windows 7 network set up and whenever I connect remotely to another computer and lock their input such as their keyboard and mouse, the remote user still has the ability to press ctrl alt del, which then allows them to use their keyboard and mouse. My question is, is it possible to disable the ctrl alt del functionality in Windows 7 so that that Blue security screen does not appear? I have tried lots of remote desktop controlling software which has the option to lock the remote computer input, but they still can press ctrl alt del and unlock their keyboard and mouse. We're using a Server 2008 r2 Terminal server environment.
I have one particular user (running windows 7 64bit) who's having an issue with a HP laserjet 400 M401 printer. She connects with her local printer set to follow her to the remote session but randomly through her session, programs like word or adobe reader
will pull up another random printer in our network instead of her local one.
For instance, today she pulled up a .pdf and it defaulted to one printer across the complex, then later within the same session she pulled up a Wordperfect document and it defaulted to a copier on the other side of the office.
She's the only person having this particular issue. So far my IT manager rebuilt her local profile (albeit sometime back) and I reinstalled drivers but I'm a bit stumped on which direction to take with this one.
I've ideated on it being an issue with USB cables, Printer memory, account data related, or maybe bandwidth?
Any help is appreciated.

The title says it all! Basically I have a comp running XP pro and I want to be able to work locally on one user account, with some kind of remote access server running on another XP user account so that the remote account and the local account can be used simultaniously. I know that this cannot be done with XP Pro remote desktop and could be by Windows Server 2003 remote desktop, but i need an alternate solution to make this happen.

Are you connecting on your network or through a remote connection? iOS is not meant to use RDP. You can use VNC or Team Viewer, but it will still be slow if you do not have a really fast Wifi network, along with the fact that rendering the GUI from Windows through a remote connection is going to make it slow as molasses in Winter in the Northern edge of Montana at Canada.

Right now I have my Dv6648se laptop connected via wifi, my DV1340us laptop connected via ethernet and a1530n desktop connected via Ethernet through a switch. All through a Linksys WRT54G Router. I am able to connect from my vista laptop to my XP Pro Laptop and I am able to connect my XP MCE Desktop to my XP Pro laptop. But I am unable to connect from either laptop to my desktop, I am also not able to ping the desktop from the laptops, (it says request timeout, or when I type in the name it says Ping request could not find host desktop (which is it's name)). Ive restarted everything, including my router and my switch. The router is set up via DHCP, and all the computers are able to connect to the internet. So basically my problem is I cannot connect to my desktop and it is not seen by my other computers, yet it can connect and see my laptops.

My remote desktop, which was operating OK for some time, is now failing to connect.
There is insufficient evidence as to the cause. The error message is not helpful (screen shot).
I could not find any error codes in Event viewer at Application and service logs > Microsoft > Windows >
Remote assistance.
The connection is from a Vista premium laptop to a Windows 10 desktop.
Both computers are on a local network and are in a common Workgroup.
Ping from the remote to the host works.
Access to shared folders on the host from the remote works.
Remote access on the host computer is on.
I tried to connect with the firewall off - failed.
The RDP-Tcp port number in the registry is 3389
Netstat does not show port 3389 as listening. If this is the problem, How do I get it into a "Listening" state?
However, I think it is only needed if I am trying to remote access via the network and not via the local network.
The host pc name is Frankspc the user is Frank
The remote pc name is Charlottespc the user is Charlotte.
Any help to get the connection re-established will be much appreciated.

Your screen shot shows you're trying to connect to Frankspc remote Win10 computer.

However, you said:
Client (controlling computer) is "Frankspc" (Vista);
Remote [or server] (computer being controlled) is "Charlottespc" (Win10).

So I assume you meant the client is Charlottespc (Vista) and remote is Frankspc (Win10)?

And all the settings you've checked would be on the Win10 system?
I think Win10 definitely has to be listening on 3389.
So wouldn't this be more of a Win10 question?

I have a XP pro SP3 system that I can't connect to a Win7 64bit system. It just fails to connect at all. I've read through a Windows 7 pdf book on setup for remote and checked all the settings. Does anyone have any ideas?

I am trying to RD into a machine that I can ping. RD fails with the generic "this computer can't connect to the remote computer" message. I checked and the remote machine does have the "allow other to connect to this machine via RD" checkbox checked. Furthermore I was able to RD to it about a month ago. Not sure what has changed since then. Where should I look? Thanks.

two machines, one running 8.1 pro, the other 8.1... i can easily, very quickly, and reliably connect to the pro machine from the 8.1 machine, but for the life of me i can't do the opposite, i can't connect to the 8.1 machine from the pro machine, and i'm running out of google sought solutions. when i attempt to connect to the 8.1 machine from the pro machine i can never get beyond the following error message:

as far as i can tell the settings for both machines are identical, and include:

> allow remote connection enabled
> firewalls on both machines disabled
> all related services enabled
> a recommended gpedit.msc setting adjusted (lan authentication level)
> both machines actively connected to private network
> successful pings and tracerts to both machines
> ipconfig release/renew, flush dns, etc. attempted to no avail

ironically i don't even want to connect to the pro machine from the 8.1 machine, which works perfectly, i just did it to test and it passed with flying colors. what i want, which is to connect to the 8.1 machine from the pro machine, is a different story, just can't get it to work. any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

edit: the connection is through a router / private network, i.e. the machines are in the same location/building, the connection is not through the internet.

Earlier today i disocvered how to set up a remote desktop. I connected my laptop to my server and an employee's computer easily/quickly with no problems.. but i can't do the same when i'm @ my home network.

Please note. that when i was able to connect i was on the work network, but i was connected wirelessly.. but it was using the same IP "family" if you will as the server and the other workstation

I am wondering if there is something i need to configure to get this fixed?

Hello all,

When I try to connect remotely to my PC, I get the following error:
"The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote connections might not be enabled.......so on and so forth".

Here is a bit of history, I was able to connect once earlier in the day from a different PC, but now can't connect again from any PC, even the one I connected from earlier.

I checked all the settings on the remote computer and everything is configured correctly. I even rebooted the system. I am behind a Linksys router, but I double/triple checked the settings in there, and everything looks ok.

So, question is, why could I connect once, but never again? I seem to be getting to the PC, but then get that error. Is it the router? Something I am missing?

Need help fast!

I really tried everything read every guide....
i have a HP probook 4510s laptop
and i'm trying to connect to my desktop computer...
both running genuine win7 ultimate, same version.
both computer are connected to the same wireless router.
i changed the laptop's remote desktop port so i can port forward the remote desktop connection on both computers.
in the control panel i enabled in both computers the remote access and stuff, like in those guides.
both computers are on the same workgroup.
when i type in the local ip address of the desktop, it won't let me connect.
it says that the computer is shut down, or not connected to the network, or that the server doesn't allow remote access.
what can i do?
i tried LogMeIn but it's slow, I want to connect over the home network.

Hi everyone,

I am unable to connect to my computer through Remote Desktop using the name of my computer, but if I use the IP address, it works just fine. I searched the event logs for any clues and have the following, not sure if they are related to this problem at all, but figured I post them just in case. I gogoled both errors, on the first one, I found some posts that were way over my head. On the second one, I found a blog that said to run ipconfig /registerdns and reboot, but that didn't work. Here are the errors and thanks in advance for your help:

If the target machine to which you want to connect is behind a router, does that router have the correct "port forwarding" configuration to let Remote Desktop from your PC to the target PC through the router's firewall (from outside its LAN)?

Remote Desktop uses port 3389.

Furthermore, if you are running with Windows Firewall also active then it, too, needs to be configured to allow Remote Desktop to reach it. I'm guessing it already does, since you say you can get to the desktop from the laptop when both are behind the router on your LAN.

So my guess is that you simply need to add port forwarding for 3389 (call that service "Remote Desktop" in the ADD dialog for the router) to the IP address of your desktop. Hopefully that IP address for the desktop remains constant, but otherwise you can set fixed IP addresses for your PC desktop in the router and then the port forwarding for 3389 to that IP will never fail.

I am writing because I have recently experienced an issue with my remote desktop. I can connect to my Windows 2003 server using Remote Desktop using its IP address, but not its host name. My desktop is a Windows Vista Ultimate box, and both machines are configured to use a Workgroup instead of a domain. Remote Desktop works great when I connect by IP, but will not even connect when attempting to use hostname.

The reason that this is important is that I am attempting to use Virtual Server on my server, and when starting up a new virtual machine, I do not always know what the IP will be. It would be very handy to be able to RDP using the host name.

Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Hi everettcomstock,

The best thing you could do here is to set both the server and PC up in a domain as this makes it easier to manage the DNS. When you are in a workgroup you always get this sort of error problems.

What I would do is setup W2K3 server to be also be a DNS and a DHCP server. The reason you only can use an IP address is down to each node not being registered correctly and the best way is to add each device into the DNS configuration. When you setup the server and put every PC into the domain it will then register each nodes settings in the DNS configuration automatically. Then just set the gateway as your router address for internet access.

It sounds complicated but it isn't

Another cheat and way around this if you are not using a domain is to edit your hostfile on the PC and add in the IP address and hostname, make sure you reboot. This is not best if you are using the several PC's to do the same thing as you would have to put this on each PC.

I am having an issue where one specific website can't connect when I am on a remote desktop connection. It seems to work fine at first after I reboot the remote computer but eventually I always get the This page can't be displayed message and clearing the
cache or resetting IE doesn't do anything to remedy it. However if I reboot the machine it again works fine for a little while. It also appear to be just this site and over the remote connection when this happens if I am at the computer it works
I am on a 64 bit Windows 7 professional machine and running Internet Explorer and I have installed all the latest updates installed.The issue seems specific to Internet Explorer as I can reach the site from Chrome when this happens but I would prefer to
use IE because the way the site is set up in Chrome is a hole different interface and some of the features don't work the same.

Any suggestions on something I might look for or try to sort this out would be greatly appreciated.
