Thinkpad X200 memory upgrade failure

Q: Thinkpad X200 memory upgrade failure

Hi This is my first post to the forum. Regrettably I must start with a problem. Following suggestions on this forum I decided to upgrade RAM in my X200 to 8 GB. I bought 2 4GB chips branded by G.Skill http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-1600c11d-8gsl I was very disappointed to find the memory doesn't work. The machine won't start (black screen) with several pipping sounds.I suppose they mean DIMM problem. When I replaced the original memory chips everything is normal. Is this at all impossible and I should go for another memory ?Could possibly BIOS upgrade help ? I'd be very grateful for any comments and suggestions. Cheers,Chris

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately X200's are very picky with DDR3-12800 (DDR3-1600) like the ones you bought.

I would advice to buy DDR3-10600 (DDR3-1333) or DDR3-8500 (DDR3-1066) RAM. I would also recommend you to avoid the "Value RAM" line from Kingston, the "Value Select" line from Corsair (other lines from those brands are ok) and any no-name brand from eBay and similar shops.

Hello there,Been trying to figure this one out for a while and am having no luck.My X1 carbon gen 2, 4600, i7, 256gb SSD, 8GB ram is throwing up memory error errors in the Lenovo diagnostics and windows fails to boot. The laptop is out of warranty now, so my only options are either finding someone who can solder on some new memory modules for me (the BIOS is surprisingly complete there, gives you the module number and everything) or buying a new motherboard, in this case the 00HN769 but they are a minimum $500 for a unit.Anyway basically just want to know if this was a common fault with these boards, whether or not I will be able to source the 00HN769 without a CPU attached to save costs, or whether (hopefully) there was some other fix for this that I could try?Lastly I was wondering if anyone knows where I could source the memory modules, M471B5674-H0-YK0.... I can't find many motherboards (a few refurbished ones on ebay) or much info on the ram and no one else seems to have had this issue.Thoughts?really appreciate any help, am dying without this thing, my Alienware m17xr4 VS X1 is such a change in laptop size...Thanks!

FYI on this one, in case anyone else has the same problem in the future...I couldn't come up with a single person who's had this problem besides myself.Cost for the ram alone was about $100 per chip, so $200, and then labour to solder them on was going to cost me about $50-100, so $250-$300 AUD, and no guarantee.  Ended up just buying a new motherboard, with CPU ram etc for $500 off ebay.  Lenovo don't seem to sell these motherboards to general public, best price I could come up with for just the motherboard was around $800 though, new, so second hand is the way to go with these.Hopefully this helps someone in the future.

hello, I hope this is the right place to ask some Q about the IBM thinkpad G40 .. My son bought a second hand G40 some years back. It had/has only 256M memory. Now I want to upgrade the memory and I scanned the relevant web pages of Lenovo. Apparently the memory should be PC2100 or maybe PC2700 becasue of PC2100 availability ? (DDR)Now a cpu-z run on that laptop says the memory is PC2300 (142Mhz) so what gives ? Has this been put in to be on the safe side or ?and an additional Q .. can memory modules be mixed ? ie can I add a 512M PC2100 sodimm to get 768M ? or do I need to remove the original 256M and go for 2x 512M ?TIAImbsysop

A:Thinkpad G40 memory upgrade

Welcome to the forum! Your machine can run PC2100/2700 memory, and you can combine it, it will always run at PC2100 speed regardless of anything else. It can be mixed, no questions asked. If the G40 is Celeron powered, it will take up to 1Gb (2x512Mb) of RAM. If it's Pentium 4-powered, you can install up to 2Gb of RAM. Hope this helps.

my computers,
1. thinkpad x60, XP pro 32bit sp3, 1.6 centrino, 2Gb ram, speedtouch 330 usb modem
2. thinkpad x200, Win 7 pro 32bit, 2.53 centrino 2 vpro, 4Gb ram, netgear DG834G v5 router

both used on the same broadband connection, seperately.
the X60 with the speedtouch is approx 2Mbps faster online. Have installed all latest updates for both machines. have same number of progs running in background, Virgin adsl broadband link.
X60 can use both modems. X200 can only use router.
The only plus points in using the X200 are that the screen's brighter and it boots up/shutsdown faster.
Win 7 not as good as XP. New netgear router not as good as older speedtouch modem. X200 no better than X60.
X60 v X200 =
X60 the winner

A:Thinkpad X60 v X200

The speed difference is obviously in the modem. I see that the Speedtouch 330 doesn't have router functions but doubt that it would slow things down that much. How about connections? A wired connection is, in my experience, always faster than wireless.

Win7 vs. XP is a matter of opinion. I like XP because I went thru the learning curve on that years ago-so it's definitely easier for me to fix problems in XP than in Win 7. But I still remember how steep the learning curve was when I first got XP. It's probably due to the fact that I now have more experience in general, but I don't think the learning curve on Win 7 is as steep. If I keep using it (as I plan) then I'm sure that in a year or two I'll find it easier to fix problems on Win 7 than on XP. That's just the way things go, I think.

Currently I am trying to upgrade memory modules on my ThinkPad P51 of type 20HH. It was planned to have maximum, i.e. 64 GB, instead of original 8 GB. After some research four of Crucial 16 GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM CT16G4SFD824A have been obtained. With absolutely no problems two of them have been inserted in slots under the bottom cover. On that stage the laptop starts up and works perfectly with total 40 GB of RAM consisted of new 32 GB and original 8 GB. However, after adding a new memory module under the keyboard and/or replacing original 8 GB memory module with new 16 GB, and/or even putting original 8 GB memory module in the neighbouring slot, the laptop doesn't start up. Several attempts have been done to solve this problem, i.e. BIOS has been updated to 1.47 version, CMOS battery has been removed and returned back to its place, SSD drive has been removed and returned back to its place, the laptop has been turned on with a battery only, with AC power adapter only and with both of them. Nothing of the listed above helped to solve a problem. Did someone face the same problem? Is there a solution for it?

Howdy All! I just ordered a Thinkpad P70 with a XEON 1505-M processor. It comes with one 16gb ECC memory module. I want to add 3 more and when I checked Crucial.com's memory upgrade options, it only list 1x16GB NON-ECC memory modules! So two questions: 1) Can I mix the 1x16GB ECC memory module with 3 NON-ECC 1x16 modules? 2) How hard is it to install memory in the P70? My last couple of mobile workstations have been Dell M Precisions and adding memory was EASY (no need to remove the keyboard ,etc)! Thanks in advance! Aggie85

Since non-ECC modules are only slightly cheaper I would not recommend it. About 2: for the P50 it is a piece of cake to install memory, it should be no different on the P70.  As for memory: Lenovo currently uses Samsung modules. So if you want to go for the same 16GB ECC modules check for M474A2K43BB1-CPB. I do not know about Cruicial, but at least Transcend also got 16GB ECC modules (check for TS2GSH72V1B). I cannot say anything about the Transcend modules, but I installed two of the 16GB Samsung modules (besides the 8GB module that was already in) in my P50 had no problem so far (even checked with Memtest86+ for a whole night). Cubbi

From the parts list of the Maintenance Manual - your computer will only accept 4gb modules.  If you only have one socket on the motherboard, you are limited to a single 4gb stick.  Usually the system has the option for two memory modules, so I would suggest contacting Lenovo support by phone to discuss this situation.

I know that the L520 allows a maximum memory of 8 GB. Do I have to use each slot to get maximun memory (4 + 4) or can I install a single 8 GB stick into a single slot and leave the other empty? If I can use the 8 + 0 method, does it make any difference as to which slot I install the stick? Additionally, does it make any difference in speed if I use the PC3-10600 memory or PC-12800 memory? i7 - 2620M processor

I'm of the opinion a L520 will support 16GB, at least my T520 and both X220 I have do so. And they're the same generation as yours

Generally speaking it's better to have two sticks for dual channel, 2x 4GB should be better than 1x 8GB. Although the difference may not be so noticeable in normal daily usage.

The current configuration of my system (as bought) is 4Gb RAM.  According to the specifictions, it is upgradable to 8Gb.  I had a conversation with Sales Support via Chat trying to find the correct part number for 8Gb memory to replace the 4Gb.  I was told that as my system is still under warranty, I would need to contact Technical Support for this to happen.  Having done a number of searches on this forum, would I be right in suspecting that the existing 4Gb is soldered in to place - hence the need for a Warranty call to upgrade.  I was advised that any attempt to make the change myself would void the warranty.Any thoughts please.

Bought a new 5200 6 cell battery for my thinkpad 3 days ago. It's an unbranded battery. The instruction sheet advised to initially discharge battery to 2% then charge fully to 100% at the first cycle after purchase. It seemed alright at first but now discharges quickly and doesn't hold the full charge rating.

I may have caused a problem because I performed a battery reset using the thinkpad power manager, thinking this would fix it but, it has reduced the holding capacity and as can be seen from the jpeg, only holds 37Wh, yesterday it held 45Wh. (I assumed it would hold 52Wh ?)

I have no idea what the next step is to re fresh this new li-ion battery. Any ideas ?

Return the battery and buy a genuine battery. I've had very little with cheap batteries, there's some high quality third party batteries like Dr. Battery but many are poor quality and simply a gamble.

As per the query we understand that you are facing the issue with Bluetooth on your ThinkPad X200.

Uninstall all the Bluetooth drivers which you have installed in your system, after uninstalling restart the system and download ThinkVantage system update utility from Lenovo support site and install it.

Ideally I want to use the original HD (7 pro 32bit 160 Gb) as an external USB drive because of all the data stored.
What's the best way to do this ? Will win7 home see the external hdd with win 7 pro and allow me to swap files or is it more complex than that ?

Get an Apricorn USB 3.0-to-SATA Adapter [$13.99] and you're ready to go.

Plug the SATA end into the back of the 160GB hard drive and the USB end into a USB port (3.0 preferred) on your laptop. You'll hear the Windows ./~ DaDing ./~ noise, might see a flash of it installing what it needs, a brief "It's ready" and it will then appear as another drive in Windows Explorer.

Now you can simply drag and drop files and folder from the old drive to the new.

Hey Lenovo Enthusiasts! I am about to purchase the Lenovo Thinkpad 550s, and I am tempted to purchase the baseline memory (4GB) and storage (512GB) HDD.  I want to make sure that I can indeed upgrade the memory to 16GB of RAM and the storage to a 256 (or 512) GB SSD. In my research earlier on, I noticed that somebody had posted a link to the parts list:https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/w550s_frubom_20150130.pdf I don't know what half of this technical jargon is, but from what I gather, I have found an SSD made by Samsung on Amazon, and an 8GB memory made by Data Memory Systems that seem to abide. SSD:http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-256GB-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7KE256BW/dp/B00LMXBOP4 Memory:http://www.datamemorysystems.com/parts/lenovo/03X6657/ Questions:1) Could somebody wiser than me please verify that these products will work for the w550s? A:Lenovo Thinkpad W550s Memory upgrade to 16GB and S...

Very disappointing. Yes, I have the same problem (son, since it is your problem!). I note that over 189 people have at least looked at this question you asked before we decided to have you purchase the W550S...and after calling tech support one last time after my son purchased the machine (and was told there should be no issue)-we see BSOD multiple times within an hour.  They happen so quickly that it is hard to even note what the error message is.... I replaced his 512 HD with Samsung SSD 512GB drive. I used a disk duplicator-everything seemed to go great. Then I put in 16GB of RAM-again, everything seemed great. However, the notebook is only now being used frequently as my son is starting school now-and as said above, the BSOD is making me think this has something to do with the SSD or RAM replacement. Yes, obviously, it's fairly easy to replace with the original parts and see if the problem goes away-but he wanted the SSD and more RAM, so even if that fixes the issue-we will likely get rid of the notebook. BUT:  here is what disappoints me:  absolutely no comment on my son's original questions. I'm guessing I won't get input from Lenovo either....will try to call tomorrow, but we are almost beyond the point where we need to return the SSD/RAM and notebook if we want our money back. A little guidance from Lenovo would be appreicated before we need to make a decision.. Thanks,Steve

I recently upgraded my T500 to a SSD and 8 gbtyes ram.  The diagnostics recognize the 8 gbyte upgrade but state only 4 gbytes are usuable.  I thought the machine maximum was 8.  Is there anything else I need to do to make the machine use the memory.

A:Thinkpad T500 Memory Upgrade - Stupid Question Tim...

The ThinkPad T400 and T500 datasheet states that it can handle up to 8GB of RAM, so it should work unless you are running a 32-bit version of Windows, in which case the maximum RAM that can be addressed by the OS is 4GB regardless of how much RAM you install.       The Windows license key is valid for both 32 and 64-bit, but to go from 32-bit to 64-bit, you would have to uninstall and reinstall Windows. Windows Install Media Download Links,https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Hope that helps,

Hello to everybody,Recently I have bought a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 and I want to increase the memory, (by default is 4 GB) to 8GB or 16 GB. if it is possible. My question is if this laptop support without any problems or errors 16GB RAM of memory, because officially it is only 8GB.RAM, but I have seen on internet, people with 16GB Ram in this laptop, Are there any problem with this? If so, upgrade to 10GB or 12GB RAM would be posible instead? Also I want to increase the capacity in my laptop (by default is 320 GB.HDD), and I want to put a 500 GB SSD Disc, and if is possible to maintain both the Hard Disc anda SSD Disc, it would be possible to put SSD Disc into the PCI Express slot and mantain the Hard Disc at the same time. Or the only possibility is to replace the Hard Disc for a SSD Disc?Thank you very much,Regards.

I recently purchased a Yoga 11e 20d9 model and so far I'm loving it.  However, I wanted to upgrade the memory from 4gb to 8gb.  I purchased Crucial 8GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) as all the reviews I read said this was okay to use, however, everytime I install the memory and I try to charge the laptop at the same time it crashes.  I can run windows 10 perfectly without issue up until I try to charge it.  I can charge ther laptop when the laptop is off but for the life of me I can't get it to coexist.  I installed the original ram and everything works perfectly.   Even if I'm in bios, as soon as I plug in the charger the laptop will crash.  It literally has rips on the screen and everything fades out.  As soon as I unplug it, the laptop works flawlessly.   I returned the memory and got a replacement and it does the same exact thing.  I updated both the BIOS and battery firmware.  I am out of ideas.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I hope somebody can help me, cause i'm getting desperate! :monkey:

To my ASUS A7V266-E (memory spec PC1600-PC2100) I have 2 x 128 mb DDR memory, and i have now tried 2 new memory (PC 2100 & PC 2700) upgrades without success.

* The computer recognized the PC2700, but the programmes crashed and the computer restarted automaticly.
* With the PC2100 the bios or windows wouldn't start at all!

I tried to relocate the sticks, also the new ones alone, no difference.

Can anyone give me an idea why i'm not able to upgrade my memory?

thanks,
Regards/ Mårten, Sweden.

Visit the Crucial site and run their online test...this will tell you exactly which type of RAM that machine requires.

After upgrading from 4gb to 16gb RAM my Adobe Illustrator files are still crashing with "There's not enough memory. ID=-108"
I also wiped my hard drive and reinstalled Windows 7.
My graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 2 GB.
This problem started a little while ago when doing image traces into Illustrator.
I was hoping this would fix it. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I am trying to boot from an external esata hdd through an esata express card. I can set the boot priority to ata hdd2 however it will not boot from it because it does not list my hdd id next to it. HDD 1 internal does however, show the hdd id next to it and obviously has no problem booting from it.

I have a ThinkPad X200 Model 7454 CTO.  The wireless was working fine until we went to visit friends and tried logging into their network.  It worked momentarily and then stopped.  Now that we're home it will not work here either.  I have checked the wireless switch and it is on and tried FN - F5.  I get the message "No supported wireless adapters (802.11, WAN or Bluetooth) are installed in this system."  Nothing works.  I've checked and I have the latest drivers installed.  HELP!!! (Please respond in PLAIN ENGLISH.  I am not at all computer savvy.)   Thanks.

Does your wireless card show up in device manager?

Hey guys! Until the day before yesterday my Lenovo Thinkpad X200 worked perfectly for 2.5 years. After I finished working that day, I closed the laptop and went to bed. When I reopened the laptop yesterday - nobody had even touched it inbetween -  there were cracks in the screen (not on the surface, but in the LCD panel) and the right half of the screen didn't work anymore. Today I went to the Lenovo service center in Hong Kong and the (generally friendly) people there told me, that this was no case for warranty, because I had caused the damage. However, as I am sure, that the failure is not my fault, I am really not willing to pay 3000 HKD (400 USD) for a replacement screen (I have a 3 year warranty). What I wanted to ask now is: Has anybody else had similar problems? Does anybody has an explanation, how this damage can occur? And especially: How can I convince the people from the service center to repair it under warranty? I argued with them for 2 hours, but they were not open for my arguments.Just to clarify: I am 100% positive that nobody touched the laptop before the problam occurred. Thank you in advance!Cheers,Markus

A:Cracked LCD Screen (Thinkpad X200) - No warranty? **bleep**?

1) can you post an image of the problem?2) Cracked LCD can be due to: a) dropping the laptop on a hard surface. b) the LCD have uneven pressure spot behind the LCD, which when loaded by an external force (i.e. putting a large load on the top case), causes a concentrated stress resulting in LCD cracking. c) closing the LCD too hard, i.e. slamming it shut d) a manufacturing defect or there is construction defect, if the latter usually light spots on the LCD would appear first. cases a,b and c are the most common causes of LCD cracking.Unless you have some sort of proof that the case d was the cause of the LCD cracking, then there is very little likelihood that Lenovo would repair the LCD damage under warranty.

Lenovo Thinkpad X200, around 5 or 6 years old, used every day for past 4 years. Screen has started flickering. No black screen or white outs, just flickering very quickly/lightly, but very obvious.

Tried to check ribbon cable to screen and it seems ok. Started and restarted computer with battery in and out, checked PSU/plug with my spare set and both ok. Changed from 50hz to 60hz resolution and screen still flickers.

Have checked lenovo help site but caught no joy.

Does this sound like the screen needs replacing or the inverter needs replacing or is there something obvious I've missed ?

Apart from this screen flicker it works fine.

A:Solved: lenovo thinkpad x200 screen flicker

It sounds a bit as though the backlight is beginning to fail.

Does moving the screen back and forth make any difference. If so it may just be the connector to the motherboard that has worked loose and needs re-inserting.
