Keyboard keys repeating (wired keyboard).

Q: Keyboard keys repeating (wired keyboard).

So what's happening is occasionally, while I'm typing, it repeats letters, as if the keyboard temporarily locks up. (Sometimes, but it's rare because I usually type continuously, it just stops me from pressing keys for a bit.) It's like "Hello my naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..."
And what's weird is it only happens after I pressed any of the lock keys before (disabling doesn't fix it.)
I'm using a keyboard connected directly to my PC, with up to date drivers.

Preferred Solution: Keyboard keys repeating (wired keyboard).

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello All,

I have a Dell XPS 8700 with Windows 10 and I have an issue with the keyboard.
The keys do not repeat.
If I hold down the X key, I just get X and not XXXXXX..
I already checked under Ease of Access in the Control Panel.
Filter Keys is not turned on, so that can't be the issue.
Can anyone help?

A:Keyboard keys not repeating

Check Control Panel, search for Keyboard to check the settings. Try a diff keyboard to test.

I'm using an HP SK-9071 small bluetooth keyboard with an Asus laptop, and I'm getting repeating keys a couple times a day. No sticky keys, but a key will suddenly and unexpectedly start repeating itself, and it's very difficult to get it to stop (eventually, if I press a bunch of other keys, it'll stop, but often by then it's deleted entire sentences throughout the message I'm working on). Seems worst with e-mail; doesn't seem to ever happen with Word. I've had the keyboard for just over a year and it was fine until recently (and I love the compact size and key feedback). I've changed the batteries twice, have moved the dongle from one side of the laptop to the other several times (and it's not plugged into an out-of-the-way hub; it's plugged into the laptop, which is quite close by). Tried to look up the keyboard by model number on the HP site, with the idea of downloading a new driver, but it doesn't come up on the site and there's no way, from what I can tell, to look up a separate HP keyboard. Any ideas, before I pitch this thing out the window in a fit of despair and go try something else? Thanks much!

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

Hi guys, Something really strange started happening two days ago. Out of the blue the following keys stopped working: GHBackspaceWindows [email protected]' The laptop is a couple of years old and a bit dusty, so I took it to the local shop to get the keyboard replaced and cleaned. Seemed to be working fine when I left the shop. Then, a little while ago the space key and P stopped. Five minutes later they started working again but ctrl stopped and N is temperamental. I haven't spilt anything on it or knocked it. Any ideas what's going on?

I had a problem with my laptop which is certain key on my keyboard is not functioning. The weird is, it happened without a reason. because after I shutdown doing my work when I turn it on again, I discovered my "s", "d", "g", "h", "\", "m", " left shift", "caps lock" and "~" key did not work at all. I try taking the key off, cleaning underneath, but nothing seems to be working. After that I try to use usb keyboard and it seems the key can be entered. So I thought my hardware is the problem. than I replace into the new one, but still having the same problem. I already waste my money buying new keyboard. Does any one happen to know what sort of problem this is and how I would go about fixing it? Is it related to the registry. My laptop is Acer aspire 4740G, ram 4GB, processor i3 2.4GHz. I hope someone can help me to solve this problem.

I have a Dell M1330 Laptop that has served me quite well for several years. I just replaced the keyboard the other day and everything is working fine, except that the new keyboard has a slightly different layout than the old keyboard did. For example, with the new keyboard all the F1, F2, F3, etc.. keys have function secondaries on them like multimedia, brightness, antennae toggle, and so on. My old keyboard didnt have most of these and so when I attempt to use them on the new keyboard they simply do not work. In fact when I use function keys as if I still had my old keyboard installed the functions work, which means it is the software interpretation of the keys that I need to change. Does anybody know how I can fix this so that the keys of the new keyboard and functions match what the keys actually say?

Another thing to add is that some of the new function keys on the new laptop such as antennae toggle were not on my last keyboard at all because they are softkeys on the case of my computer, and I am not sure a function like that would be able to be added to the keyboard mapping at all, but I'm not sure.

Also, I would prefer to not install third party software to accomplish this, even if it means I need to delve into the registry manually. Can anybody help??

I have a Dell 7737 laptop and from time to time it develops a firmware glitch where random keys stop working for both BIOS Setup and Operating Systems. After such thing happens neither shutdown (Full shutdown / Fast Boot disabled) nor restart get the keyboard back to a normal state. At this point the only workarround is to disconnect the AC power cord and then either drain the battery or physically remove it.
This laptop's battery cover is not designed for daily removal and it is starting to get loose because of this BIOS bug.
I am running BIOS version A14 but this bug was present since I purchased the laptop with BIOS version A07. Sometimes I cannot even type my password because the random keys that stop working match those it uses.
Please Dell could you provide a BIOS hotfix for this annoying issue?

What's the deal with my keyboooooooooooooooard? I'll be typing along and all of a sudden the 3 lights will flash (Number Lock, Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock) and whichever key I just let up on will keep repeating -- even the backspace, page down, etc.
It is an inland keyboard, ten bucks at ABC Warehouse, but it worked fiiiiiiiiiiiiiine on my other pc. I just got a new eMachines W3502 with XP and it seemed to nta (that time i was trying to type "instal", the lights flashed anddddddddddddddd I got "nta".
Anyway, XP seemed to recognize it okay and install it. Device Manager shows that it is working properly but thhhhhhhhhhhhhhereeeeeeeeeeeeeee is oviously a problem.
It connected to the othhhhhhhhhhhhhher pc with a ps2 aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadapter but that didn't seem to fly on the new machine so the adapter is off and it's connected to a USB port.
I want to us this eboard because it has hotkeys on it (that are working properly) and the one that came with the pc dooooooooooooooesn't have hotkeys.
I don't mind junking it and buying another one with hotkeys on it, but I wouldn't want the same thing to happen to the new one.
What do you think? Try a new keyboard or does someone know what mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmay be happening here?

BTW, the eMachines keyboard that ccccccccccccccame with the pc workd fine. (But it doesn't have hotkeys.)

I have three machines on a network of around 400 users. They are all reporting the same problem. When they are typing quickly a paragraph of around four lines for example a letter they have typed will randomly start repeating about ten times and then stop. This is not only on one application it happens in excel, lotus notes etc.

I have so far restarted all three machines, given one of the users a new keyboard. The problem still persists!

Please all help will be greatly appreciated!

This is an odd issue that I have not found anyone else having. I am not sure as to the cause of it.

Basically, when I press certain pairs of keys, the computer acts as though another key is being pressed as well.
Some examples:
q+s: qws
w+d: wed
r+y: ryu
k+u: kui
l+i: lio

There are others, as well as ones with 3 keys triggering a fourth. They follow no general pattern (although wd, qs, ku, and li are the same pattern
on the keyboard, that pattern doesn't cause a similar response on other keys, like ef, rg, th, yj, etc.)

This problem has persisted as long as I have had this laptop. I got it used on Amazon. It said that, in terms of condition, it just had a few minor
scratches and such, which is accurate.

This occurs every time the keys are pressed at the same time (in fact, while typing this, I was constantly having to correct typos such as "everyu",
"lioke",  and "whiole".)

Hello there. Yesterday, I bought the Ideapad 310-15isk, and it's phenomenal in many aspects. However, I'm a bit bothered by the extensive keyboard this laptop has, most importantly, the pagination commands on the arrow keys. I've been meaning to find a solution to disable those and just make them work on the Numpad since it's really bothersome to type on and then go all the way back because of the return pagination key. Is there any solution for this to unbind those commands only on the arrow keys?

Hello, thanks in advance for the Help. I was playing the game Fallout 3 using of coarse mouse and keyboard. at random times I was alt tabbing to check google for game guides. Then the controls started doing there own thing randomly jumping and shooting. I figured at first this was a keyboard problem I exited the game and opened note pad. all the gaming inputs that I had used were being repeated, including the words I typed for the google search as in "Fallout 3 guide" also its repeating mouse clicks as well. it only repeats the few seconds of when I was playing, and never nothing new. it happens at random times. Unplugging mouse and keyboard does nothing, it still enters keystrokes and mouse clicks.

Rebooting changes nothing, I ran spybot, avast virus scan, malwarebytes, a- squared. all came up clean.

I did the steps required for posting except running Gmer gets a "windows\system32\config\system: cannot find file specified" and most check boxes are grayed out, clicking the scan yields the same error except it says the file is already being used. I have disabled all scanners and virus programs prior to running it.

This is just a gaming rig and I can easily just format and re install windows, however I am curious as to what this is, and it teaches me nothing by doing that anyways. Thanks again.

Edit: I just want to ad that it shows I used bit torrent, this was happening before I ever installed it yesterday.

Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

About a month ago I've been having a very weird think happen.  I've had no spills on my keyboard, but only the numbers key will repeat whenever I press them.  For instance, if I press "1", it will sometimes type only one number, but sometimes nothing, and other times three or four number 1s.  The same thing happens through 1-0.  More, whenever I want to shift+ a number, I have to end up pressing the number keys like 10 times in order to have the symbol come up.  I've never encountered this on any other keyboard before.  Again, no spills, no malware, I've deleted the driver and reinstalled, etc.  No luck.  Any advice?  Might I just need a new keyboard?

Hey guys,

I'm having a really big problem with my keyboard. I'm running windows 7. The problem started about four days ago, I've searched for various ways to solve this problem but I couldn't find any.

The issue is that randomly, my keyboard will stop typing keys and every time I hit a key, instead of typing a key, it would act as if I was hitting a shortcut. Such as, when it happens i hit the "F" key and the tools options come up. This happens on every windows even on MSN messenger, I hit my keys and it hits shortcut keys for the window I'm on.

I would be using my computer for a while and the keys would work fine but then a little later, somethings 30 minutes sometimes an hour or two, randomly they turn into shortcut keys. Every key i hit, I tried a new keyboard but it seems to happen also. I don't get the issue, I've scanned fully using malwareBytes, MCAffee, and Advanced system pro, but it's still happening. It's really frustrating and annoying when it does happen. I've turned my keyboard off and on, re sync'd. I'm starting to lean more towards it being a virus or something that messed with my settings somehow.

Malwayre Bytes did find something while scanning

files\Spigot\wtxpcom\components\widgitoolbarff.dll (Adware.WidgiToolbar) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

I'm really stumped here, I haven't tried un-installing my keyboard & re installing it but Idk what good t... Read more

A:Keyboard keys randomly turn into shortcut keys

I would also like to add that, when this occurs. I have to restart my computer for the keyboard to work correctly. It's wireless & I've tried a wired keyboard also, it's the same issue.

Also when this happens, while on the internet. Every time I click a link or the internet like "home" "news" anything at all on the internet even an image, it won't go to it but instead it will download the data into my computer... It's very strange & I'm completely stumped on what to do. Or to even search this on google for other similar issues, I don't even know how I would go around to search that. Or what I would type in the search bar. This happens with both Firefox & google chrome. Even outside the internet in just my desktop, it's impossible to type even on notepad.

This is an odd issue, which I thought I should bring to the attention of the Dell team somehow.
I installed the A03 bios for my XPS 13 a few days ago, when it was pushed out to my laptop. Immediately, I started to get the 'repeating keypresses' issue that a few people have reported. Button presses, especially to the spacebar, started to appear twice when the button was only pressed once. This was an intermittent issue - I'd roughly estimate it was one keypress in ten, if not less.
Surprised, I rolled back the bios to A02, then to A01, then to A00. Only on rolling back to A00 did the problem resolve itself. I'm currently running the A00 bios and the problem is gone. Which is fine, as I didn't have any complaints to begin with, but it's rather odd that a bios update breaks things rather than fixing them.
I'm aware this is probably not a widespread issue (otherwise I would have read more complaints about it) but I thought the team should be aware.
Many thanks.

I am using a Razer Arctosa keyboard on my desktop computer running Win7 (keyboard is approx 2 years old).

I am experiencing the following (recently, and sometimes it occasionally goes back to normal):

Pressing "w" registers "w4"
Pressing "W" (shift + w) registers "W$"
Pressing "4" registers "w4"
Pressing "$" (shift + 4) registers "W$"
(As if "w" and "4" are linked; occasionally it registers as "4w")

Pressing "u" registers "u" and F5.
(which means when I am typing and press the "u" it refreshes my page... this is the second time I am writing this...)

Pressing the Windows key registers NumLock toggle.

Pressing "7" registers "/7"

This is all of the weird ones I have noticed. All other keys seem normal.
As I type this it has done the above, but now it is back to normal. Cannot find a pattern when it decides to change from crap to normal. It is back to crap again.
This is the 4th day since it started and the computer has been restarted/shutdown various times.
I have also checked for malware and it is all clear.
The most recent keyboard drivers have been downloaded and installed, but did not fix it.
No liquids have been spilled.
Have searched the web and have not encountered a solution (or someone with the exact kind of problem).
Anyone has any idea of a fix or what may be affecting it?

A:Keyboard: some keys registering 2 keys

Pretty much every time I see this it's due to something spilled on the keyboard that has damaged it or just a keyboard that has failed.

Test it on another computer, if it does the same thing then it needs to be replaced. On the other computer don't load any drivers or software for it just plug it in and wait for Windows to install it's drivers for it and test it.

I have a question. I purchased an Apple wired aluminum keyboard. I really like it except for one thing so far. Normally, on all the other keyboards I have had, I can use the Back Space (Delete) key to delete text backwards and correct mistakes easily while I am typing. This keyboard seem to tell you in the instructions that you can use the deletex for forward delete and the regular delete key for backward deleting. However, the backspace key does not work for this purpose. Am I doing something wrong or has anyone found that they cannot backward delete on this keyboard? I is really annoying to have to stop and more the cursor backwards in order to delete the letters in front. I hope this problem can be solved because I do like the keyboard otherwise. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if this is the area of the forums to post this but, I have a problem with my laptop keyboard.

Sometimes when I press shift the buttons come out with wired letters.
Such as and E with an accent on it when I press shift and question mark.

Basically any symbols don't work. I try typing the @ sign and the number 3 will appear. I tried everything from function, alt, ctrl, shift and windows key + differnt combinations and nothing seems to work. The only way to make this stop is somehow to wait it out, or restart laptop.

Is there a way to stop this?

I would like to just remap it, but all the software I have tried is extremely complicated and way beyond my skill level. SharpKeys is very limited, and it works for assigning a single function to a key, but I need it to do more than that. If I remap the keyboard, I would like to be able to assign macros.

For now, I would just like to have a PC driver for this keyboard so that it will work normally (mostly), but I'm also open to trying another mapping program if someone knows of a simple one.

Thank you!!

Booted into safe mode still no joy.
Did a system restore it couldn't do a restore
Checked the drivers cant load the drivers for the keyboard code 19 error?
Im really more bothered about getting my music and photos out of my account than anything....Lots of card making files etc in it that if I lose I cant get them back.
At a loss of what to do now.....Have run a disk clean up, couldn't run a fix and right now I have a defrag running hoping something might just jump back into place.
I've got a wireless mouse that is working but the keyboard again its not being seen and gives me same error message.
Any help i would be great full for .

If you all you need to do is pull your documents from the computer it can be done with a live linux disk. You would need another computer to burn a CD. Let me know and I can provide a link to a guide. The live linux disk would boot and you should have your keyboard and mouse available to transfer files to a USB external drive. Linux will run from RAM and the CD. It will not touch the Hard drive, only the fact you would be copying the files to another device.

Can not access sndvol.exe to create a shortcut to allow keyboard to control volume.

I am using a Standard PS2 wired keyboard for my HP Elite 8000 system. Details in my signature.

I discovered the following and wish to implement with my basic keyboard:

1) click your start menu. Type ?sndvol? in the search box at the bottom
2) Right-click-drag the sndvol program icon to your desktop and select the ?Create shortcuts here? option
3) Right click on the new shortcut and hit properties
4) Go to the shortcut tab, and click inside the ?shortcut key? box.
5) Make your shortcut key combo. For example I use ALT + F12. Hit apply and OK to close the dialogue box.

Although I am Administrator, I am being blocked from shortcut key which indicated "None" at the moment, to make create a shortcut to do what is suggested in the above instructions.

Can anyone advise a way to unblock (allow) me; or a workaround to adjust my volume and add a mute button shortcut from my keyboard (preferably from the up/ down arrows on the numeric pad) without going to a third party software or a purchasing new keyboard?

Thanks in advance.

SharpKeys - Home

RandyRants: SharpKeys 3.5

Thanks to SharpKeys, I have decided to make Keypad Minus set as Volume Down, Keypad Plus as Volume Up, and Keypad Del as Mute.

It can remap any key you want to anything you want, but this is what I use SharpKeys for.

I have a new Dell Inspiron desktop running Windows 7 Pro with a wired keyboard that is now not working after Dell's update. Mouse is fine. I have an account password log-in and can't access anything because I can't type anything. Booting in safe mode does not work. Booting in the BIOS-- the keyboard is responsive. Not sure what to change or adjust to get the keyboard working.

I have a Dell Dimension 9100 with Windows XP and Service Pack 3. On my wireless keyboard there are 5 buttons along the top left of the keyboard that are marked; BACK/ FORWARD/STOP/REFRESH/HOME. On the top right of the Keyboard there are 3 more buttons marked; MAIL/MY COMPUTER/CALCULATOR.
Also on the right side above the numbers pad is a volume control. These features have stopped working and I cannot figure out how to re energize them.I checked with Dell and there is not a program or driver to download to get these features working again. Any suggestions would be appreciated

A:Hot Keys on Keyboard

Those keys are collectively known as Multimedia Keys.
If they do not require additional software my guess is the keyboard is faulty.
