Preferred Solution: Solved: Slow computer, please help speed this thing up!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello Everyone,
I need help please. I have 4 computers (iMac, 2 laptops and 1 PC desktop) on a wireless network in different rooms of my house. All but one have 20+ mbps speed. The problem desktop computer is new but has 2.4 mbps speed. I have cable modem with a fast bandwidth and a Cisco N600 router.

I changed the network card (ASUS PCE-N53 Wireless -N Adapter) in the problem computer which didn't improve anything. As I write this, I am using a laptop on the desk with the problem computer and just did a speedtest which came in at 20.13 mbps. If I hard wire the problem computer it runs at 30+ mbps.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Robert

Hi!
I have been having a major issue with my internet.

I will try to provide as much information as possible.

First of all:
-I have cable internet, my ISP is Charter
-I have 2 Computers. 1 Laptop and 1 Desktop. And i have an old desktop computer.

Tech Specs.>

Laptop:XPS M1530, customized at www.dell.com than 2 months old
-Its OS is Windows Vista Home Premium
-Processor: Intel Core, 2 Duo, T8300 @ 2.4GHz
-RAM/Memory:4GB
-64 bit operating system
-500GB of Hardrive space

Desktop(new): Studio XPS 435MT
-Its OS is Windows Vista Home Premium
-Processor: Intel Core, i7 920 @2.67 GHz
-RAM/Memory:6GB
-64 bit operating system
-1TB of Hardrive Space(1000~GB)

Desktop(old)ell Dimension 8200
-Its OS is Windows XP
-Processor: N/A(i am somewhat unable to use the machine at the moment, thus we purchased new computers...)
-RAM/Memory:256MB
-less than 40GB of Hardrive Space
*Both have McAfee

Ok, so the problem. I am able to connect both the laptop and the desktop(new) to the internet through my modem and what not. However, during web browsing, online gaming(even the simplest of games that only require as little as a dial-up connection.), downloading, and updating. When im browsing the web, Internet Exploror and Mozilla Firefox say that they cannot display the webpage(the typical) Task manager reads out a 100Mbps network speed for "Local Area Connection. It also reads out that the state is "connected". Under Control Panel, in Network and Sharing center it says im am co... Read more

Hi guys. I hope you can help on this issue I've been having with my internet connection, I don't know what to do...

I resently formatted my harddrive because my internet all of a sudden started being very slow but after the format it's still the same issue. Now I've tried plugging the connection line into my laptop and there there's no problem.

I am gettin' a slower download than upload...

I have a 10mb download/1 upload speed LAN connection. I ran a speed test on the same connection and on my stationary it shows like 250 kbs download and like 750 kbs upload, while on my laptop it shows like 8 Mbs download and 750 kbs upload... so what's the problem?

So far I've found out that it has nothing to do with the internet connection line or my NIC (I tried a brand new one and it was the same issue), it's not spyware or malware, it's not fragmented and under internet connections it says that I'm connected on a 100 Mb network card and there are no problems with any of the devices?

However I can see that if I open the job list, the download connection is very unstable going from up to 750 kb for a breif moment then falls to a halt at 0 kb... and moreover it says that I'm not using any percent of the network?

I'm on windows 7 and haven't had any problems before this, the rest of the system works just fine, but not the internet. If I try and download something it won't get higher than like 50 kb and then may... Read more

Hi.

I have this very annoying problem and I'm really out of hopes. I don't know what to do anymore. I'll make a summary of the problem and will be as concise as possible

So I have this Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop with a broadband connection (direct cable, no router) and 3 weeks ago I reinstalled my Windows. Everything went well until 2 weeks ago when the internet speed went down, dial-up like. Pages won't load, and if they do they load just partially. I called my ISP and they said they had no problem. I couldn't find any solution so I thought maybe, some sort of virus or spyware is doing this so I formated the whole hard-disk and did a clean install of Windows.

Unfortunatelly nothing changed, the download speed is the same. Here is a speedtest.net evaluation:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/2276053238.png

Drivers are up to date, no windows firewall, no antivirus and no windows update. The ISP support guy told me to deactivate IPv4 and IPv6 from Local Area Connection, but nothing changed. I did a TCP/IP reset which raised my down speed to almost 1 Mb, but after a few minutes it went back to "dial-up". With the down speed being the same, Speedtest sometimes shows me upload speed in between 50-70 Mb which is unbelievable (I will make a ss next time I see this).

And the very weird thing is that I have another netbook (pretty weak config, Intel Atom CPU, 2 GB RAM) and with the same cable it has normal speed (the kind of speed I had on this Dell too). An... Read more

Hi guys. First of all, thanks for reading.

My computer is in pretty bad shape, I think. I thought I could get rid of the problem on my own using Malwarebytes & Combofix, but I've since learned that I cannot. My computer is dragging and is very slow.. I have a seagate external drive I'm trying desperately to back up all my important files on.. but when I try to transfer them, my computer screen flashes blue and restarts.
What when this first started happening was I ran Malwarebytes numerous times, the results were all the same, two infections named "Trojan.TDSS". It was set to remove upon reboot but that never happened. After that, I tried Combofix, because it had worked in the past. I read the rules and you guys seem to be against instructing people to use it, so I hope you guys will still help me. When I ran Combofix, it deleted these files:

C:\Windows\system32\sdra64.exe
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\SKYNETwalysvou.sys
C:\Windows\system32\SKYNETrfiqaljf.dll
C:\Windows\system32\SKYNEThhavknob.dat
C:\Windows\system32\SKYNETwhnyshla.dll
C:\Windows\system32\SKYNETocjaoyag.dat Rootkit

What should I do now? I think my computer is still severely infected, and I'd like to fix it without reformatting it. Please help!

Also, I'm running Windows XP Also if me mentioning Combofix or what it did isn't allowed here, someone tell me and I will remove it ... Read more

Please note the message text in blue at the top of this forum. You should not be using Combofix unless instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert who can interpret the logs. It is a powerful tool intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for private use. Combofix was never meant to be used as a general purpose malware scanner like SuperAntispyware or Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer. That's the decision by the creator and we will abide by that decision. With that said, now rescan again with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware but this time perform a Full Scan in normal mode and check all items found for removal. Don't forgot to check for database definition updates through the program's interface (preferable method) before scanning and to reboot afterwards. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. When done, click the Logs tab and copy/paste the contents of the new report in your next reply.I'd like to fix it without reformatting it.I'm still obligated to let you know what you are dealing with.IMPORTANT NOTE: One or more of the identified infections (SKYNET[random characters].***) is related to a nasty rootkit component. Open Task Manager and check the cpu usage. If it's high, check to see which process is using the cpu. You may also want to check Event Viewer and see if Windows is reporting any hardware issues. If all of that looks normal, then we will need to know exactly what is "slow".

Hi Everyone,
I have a 2GB ram Acer Aspire One AO722 computer that has been slowing down substantially. I have a huge amount of hard drive space but it seems if I store more on it it gets slower. My question to you is what is the best software out there to speed up a computer?

The Software I Currently Have (To Not Mention):
Tweaking.com Tweaker
CCleaner
ATF Cleaner

A:Best way to speed up a slow computer

Start by checking this out:

Optimize Windows 7
How many processes are running at any given time? Use the link above in addition to deciding how many processes you need running as too many will slow your rig down. I have an old laptop with only 1 GB RAM, Intel Duo Core and 55GB HDD. I usually only have 48 processes running at rest, and when I'm online, with multiple programs opened, I only use about 5% of my CPU

Tweaking things is a tricky route to take. Some can help, but many can harm. Windows 7 is pretty well tweaked out of the box so I wouldn't do to many. Try scanning for malware with; Malwarebytes or Superantispyware to see what may be holding your system up.

That's a good place to start, the members here can help further, but until you do a few of these common steps there's no need to get too in depth, as you'd be surprised how much these things can help.

Well we began to notice that although the internet works at a perfectly fine speed downloads go excessivly slow. I have read that Nortan antivirus is a potential cause but I was just wondering if there are any other possibilities that could be causing the problem. We recieve internet via cable. Also, plugging our previous computer in right next to us and trying to download the same program, the speed is considerably faster, noting that the second computer is using windows XP.

Hello 7forums,
I recently purchased a new computer, and everything is running perfect except the download speed is very slow.
My old computer would average 1Mb d/l speed where as my new one hovers around 50-90kb. My brother is using my old computer on the same network and i got him to d/l the latest wow patch (so we were downloading from the same source) and it still averaged at 1Mb.
However when playing WoW i average anywhere between 30-60ms and my browing speed is perfect.
So to summarize:
My old computer's d/l speed is 1Mb, where as my new on is around 90kb,
After downloading from the same source the result was still the same,
Browsing speed and in-game pings are fine.

Hello,

I've recently bought a new computer but for some reason I'm getting only about 10-60 KB/sec. When on my old computer(which is now broken) I would get around 1 - 3 MB/sec. I've tested it on my mom's computer and her download speed is fine. My ping is fine, such as when I play online video games and such I have no lag or problems. And I can upload things at my normal rate as well. But my download speed just won't keep up. things that use to take seconds now take several minutes or even hours.

I don't know what the problem is and I've tried a few different solutions that I've found, some even on this site, but none have worked. So please if anyone can help I would gladly appreciate it, and I will give more information that is needed.

My download speeds are in the 11-20 KB/S range while theres are in the 400-500 range! even my old low RAM computer is getting dl speeds in that range. I don't know why it is doing this, one of my roommates said he still downloads stuff on his win XP computer bc his new Win 7 comp is just as slow as mine!
Now, a series of stupid questions:
Is this a common problem with new computers in general?
Is there an easy way to fix it, such as utilizing more priority to download speeds?

My computer is on a network and is not the main, however, all programs on my computer are stand alone programs (Individually installed). We simply share the data (Files) between them. Lately my excel program has been slow to respond to commands. (Type in one cell and tab over to continue typing in another cell and it takes a moment for the curser to catch up.) Although there are quite a few programs where data is shared, Excel seem to be the only one affected. Have talked with Gateway (OEM installed Office 2003) with no luck in solving the problem. Repaired and Reinstalled....still no change. Even tried unhooking the router. This did eliminate the problem, however, I need the shared files on the network. We did switch the ports around to make sure the the router wasn't bad and experienced the same problem no matter what port we were in. No other computer is experiencing the same problem, just mine.

B) My e-mail account is a concern. I occasionally get junk mail, like stock info or men's medications. I usually add them to my block senders list. How are you connected, 802.11 "b" max is ~5.5Mbps, "a" and "g" max out at ~20 Mbps, etc. WiFi operates at the highest possible speed that both endpoints can support. For example, an 802.11g laptop connected to an 802.11n router will only work at the lower speed of "g". In other words, both devices need to support the same standard in order to operate at those speeds.

Also, are there any physical obstructions in the line of sight between devices? What's the distance between the devices? Is there any radio interference in the area?

Wikipedia: WiFi > Interference
Interference

For more details on this topic, see Electromagnetic interference at 2.4 GHz.

Wi-Fi connections can be disrupted or the internet speed lowered by having other devices in the same area. Many 2.4 GHz 802.11b and 802.11g access-points default to the same channel on initial startup, contributing to congestion on certain channels. Wi-Fi pollution, or an excessive number of access points in the area, especially on the neighboring channel, can prevent access and interfere with other devices' use of other access points, caused by overlapping channels in the 802.11g/b spectrum, as well as with decreased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) between access points. This can become a problem in high-density areas, such as large apartment complexes or office buildings with many Wi-Fi access points.

Additionally, other devices use the 2.4 GHz band: microwave ovens, ISM ban... Read more

Okay, I'm baffled. Usually I can trouble shoot problems, but not this time.

I have 8 computers on my network. My main computer (this one) has a very slow upload speed.

Comcast - 20mb down, 5mb up

This computer - 25mb down, .17mbps up

All of the rest will hit 5mbps up consistently.

Everything I've done here has not worked ...

I've plugged the computer straight into the modem
Updated built in network adaptor drivers
Flushed the DNS: ipconfig /flushdns
Put on a new network cable
Tried a network cable from a computer that does work fine
I spent 45 min's on phone with Comcast support.

I run XP Pro
All upgrades are current
i7 4gig ram
Dual 512k video cards

Computer worked fine few weeks ago. But now it's not.

I do not have an additional slot to install a new NIC card.

What do I try next?
What else do you need to know to help me trouble shoot this?

Thanks alot for your help.

At the same time of the test on three other computers all using the same tester, the same ISP, the same router, the same telephone line in the same house the speed is 2.01Mb/sec. which is the usual speed here.

The fact that they all use XP and have differing hardware should make no difference I think - if I'm wrong I can supply those details. This new computer has a much higher specification than the others but again would this make a difference?

I have done virus and malware scans.

Can anyone explain what could be causing this and how I can fix this please? I can't think of any other relevant info to include at this point.

A:Slow download speed on 1 computer fast on others?

Concentrate on the link between your computer and the router. Replace the cable if it is a wired connection. Use the cable from one of the working systems to test. Also use the same port as one of the fast systems.

If no change, swap the network card or check for updated drivers or chipset drivers if the ethernet connector is on the mainboard
Your router may also have QOS settings that give priority to one or more computers based on ip or MAC address.

Are all the computers wired connections?

I live in an area where DSL is not available, so I'm using a dial up connection (AOL 9.0) Our old computer (Dell Dimension 4100, Win ME) would get anywhere from 50 to 53.3K speed and when it wasn't locking up had reasonable internet speed. We recently purchased a new computer (E machines C2825) and the speed rarely reaches over 35K using the same access numbers. It has XP home. Is there a way to get the speed up? Even though it is a 56K modem, is there something that would limit the speed, and if so can I change it? Or should I return the E-machines while it's still under warranty and quit while I'm not so far behind?

A:Slow dial up speed on brand new computer

Is this the exact same phone connection that you used before?

A lot of things can affect the speed, but few have much to do with the computer or modem themselves.

The phone connections must be in excellent condidion since even a small problem with a bad connection or corrosion can make a lot of difference to a dialup connection.

When I first moved into "this old house", 35 was all I could get. But unscrewing all the phone connections and cleaning to bare copper, from the computer to the box outside gave me solid 53.3 connections after that. Even the connections on the modem itself and the wire going in can be cleaned with a Q-Tip and alcohol.

In the Control Panel under modem settings, some say speed can be achieved by turning off flow control (hardly a problem with new computers---old ones sometimes couldn't keep up) and be sure compression is enabled.

Check that all your modem speed settings are at or above its capacity, and look for the newest driver you can find.

If you like the computer and it works well, I certainly wouldn't consider returning it for this alone. New modems can be gotten for $10.

The number of other devices connected to the same phone line should also be limited. The more answering machines, extensions, caller ID's on the line, the slower it will be.

And limit the length of phone cords. If you have 20 feet of rolled up phone wire behind the computer, get a shorter wire .

That's all I can think of at the moment. Othe... Read more

Okay, this has been going on for weeks. Even my pretty techie bro is out of ideas. My brother returned to college not long ago, but he was still home when it all started. I'd asked him to see if internet was slow or anything, and he checked and told me it was fine. A few days later my dad brought his laptop home from work. The laptop is only on our network when he's doing stuff at home - but I asked him, and I was for myself it was completely fine...and fast. And as my brother's now back at college with his laptop, my computer is generally the only one on the network, but as it was going on before that, I know their laptops weren't effecting anything.

Now that we're done with the back-story, I'll do my best to explain what's going on: The connection on my computer is fine. Sometimes it'll short out, but generally it's good. However, it's always slow - about maybe 2 times faster than dial-up. But pretty often it becomes incredibly slow, taking as much as 20-30 minutes to load something, even simpler things.

That's the best I can come up with right now about the problem. Resetting the router and/or restarting the computer can help a little, but it eventually goes to near dial-up speed, then down to when it's very slow.

I guess something to add is that I'm the only one with Vista on the computer. My dad's laptop has XP, and my brother has a Mac laptop.

I've only used up a little less than 1/4 of the s... Read more

Hi all.
I recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite C50-A02-V running Windows 8 Home Edition.

I've never really had the fastest internet, but its always been alright for what I used it for... untill i purchased this computer. Suffice it to say the internet is... a little below sub par.
Heres a speedtest...

My phone, My sisters Laptop running windows 7, even my old 2006 IBM running Linux all are getting speedtests with Download speeds of at least 5-6Mbps from the same router, with at least 5-6Mbps.
And yet here I am, brand new computer in hand, with memories of dialup floating through my head.

I've been on message boards trying to find an answer to this for hours. I've changed the Wireless settings to not turn off the Wifi. I've checked Toshiba's Website and downloaded the latest WLAN driver. I deleted literally every last ounce of bloatware from the computer when I got it, so I don't THINK that's an issue. There's no torrents or security running either.

Basicaly I have no idea what to do.

Now the weird thing is if I turn the computer on, and do a speedtest right away, I'm getting a fast Ping and a download of 5 Mbps instead of the 0.6...

Any Help or ideas on what to do?

A:Impossibly Slow Wifi Speed, Brand New Computer.

Did you try an ethernet cable instead of wireless? If that works normally, read on...

I had a problem like this many years ago, it turned out to be something wrong with the drivers for the network card I was using. To fix it, go into device manager and find the entry for the wireless network adapter (eg "xyz wireless network adapter"). Right click on the adapter and select "remove". Reboot the machine. It should detect the adapter as new hardware and reinstall the drivers for the network hardware. Of course you may need to supply the drivers at this point if they are not available on the machine.

This is somewhat techy and if you are not a level 2 nerd you may want to get a qualified friend to help...

Hello Everyone,

So I go on my desktop computer today and what do you know, the internet is really slow. I do a speedtest on my laptop which is right next desktop, and it has regular internet speeds. However, my desktop is really struggling, at times I can't even load basic pages, let alone play games. It's a custom built PC and I'm using a Netcomm wireless adapter to get a wireless connection (I can't use wired).

What happened?!? Why is this randomly happening? Is my adapter broken? Do I need to update something?

Sorry if this in the wrong place.
If you need any more information to help me solve this problem then just ask.

Thanks,
~Gun

Hello.  I am on a computer that is using Windows 7 Ultimate.  When I start up the computer it is very slow.  I tried to uninstall some unused programs from the computer and there is a program that I tried to uninstall that keeps reinstalling automatically called PC Fix Speed.

So far I have tried to restore the computer from a save point and it has not worked.  I am currently running a malwarebytes scan.

I am trying to fix this computer for my landlord so that he can use it as a HTPC in our living room.  Thanks for your help.

Hello StrobeStop,
Lets see if these will kick it to the curb.....

1..   Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/
Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
    Do not reboot until instructed.
If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please advise me of this..
2..
Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool. Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
.
    Click on the Scan button.
AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to com... Read more

I just got a new Dell PC with XP Pro. I have DSL with an advertised download speed up to 728 Kbits/sec. My internet speed seemed sluggish so I tested it over the last 5 days, several times a day at different times. The download speed varied between 54-171.
I tried disabling the firewall & anti-virus software (scary) but neither made a difference.

Could this be a problem with my ISP or could it be my PC? Is there such a thing as configuring a PC to be optimised for DSL rather than dial-up?

That screen shot doesn't tell us anything useful. I do see uTorrent running there, that can cause any number of bandwidth issues. Try killing that process and see if things improve.

How about telling us the real issue?

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model of the router.
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.

Also, please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

On any problem computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I just bought a new Laptop with Windows 8. But when I tried to connect to Wi-Fi the first time switch it on, it did connect but it can't access to the internet (It said "Limited"). So I re-installed the wi-fi driver. The "Limited" warning was gone but the internet speed was really slow (The laptop wasn't too far from the router).
I had also tried to change the wi-fi channel but it still slow. I just used windows 8 for the first time, did I miss some configuration? Other devices in my house can connect to this Wi-fi network and work fine, except this new laptop.

Thank you for any further answers and helps.

PS. Please excuse my poor English

I wasn't sure exactly WHERE to post this... so, I'm gonna start here...

I have a very small desktop computer. It has an AMD Athlon Processor (2850e) 1.8 Ghz, and 2GB RAM. (64 bit OS). it is made by EMACHINES model #EL1331G. I use FIREFOX browser & windows 7 os.

This computer has always been fine for just me. But now my husband has found FACEBOOK GAMES, and it takes FOREVER to load anything! The USER PROFILES option NEVER WORKED ON THIS COMPUTER ~ I have tried to make different profiles, but it never worked. So, it's not only the two of us on it, but now my son wants to use it also. I know this is taking up huge amounts of space & memory. I've tuned it up, taken off unused programs, cleaned it out, and it still doesn't run very well. Pages load eventually, and they can IM pretty quickly.

My question is... can I buy more memory for this computer and make it faster? or should we just buy another tower?? I thought that you could open it up & add another memory board to it?

My next step is to take all my photos & music & put it on my external hard drive, then remove them all from this computer. I just bought myself a laptop, but haven't "broken it in" yet. And, there's a lot of information on this desktop that is still being used by me.
