Over 1 million tech questions and answers.

How do I save my files if Windows 10 is corrupted/won't boot?

Q: How do I save my files if Windows 10 is corrupted/won't boot?

Here's the situation...

1) Computer was running very slowly. I re-booted, thinking that might help.

2) Since that time, it won't boot Windows. I just see the Dell symbol on startup (it's a 1.5 year old XPS 8900 with no serious prior problems) and then it goes to a new screen and says it doesn't have a bootable drive.

3) So...I ran diagnostics (both on my own, and then a Dell tech told me to do the same things). It's supposedly not a hardware problem. Instead, Windows 10 is the issue. So I had them overnight me an installation disk (it came pre-installed, so I didn't have the CD before).

4) It's VERY important to me to save my files if possible. Some are for work, some are family photos...some are backed up, but some from the last couple months are not (I just haven't been diligent enough about that). The computer has two internal drives...1 TB main drive with Windows AND some valuable files on it...and another 2 TB drive which is a backup and where I store most of my photos (my side job is photography so I generate a ton of files every year). I would really love to recover both if possible.

5) Called Dell again tonight after I got the installation disk in the mail, and the tech unfortunately didn't really know what he was doing...after just one failed attempt to reset the computer WITHOUT losing files, he immediately wanted to give up and click the "scorched earth" (delete everything) option. I talked him out of that, and he said the other option was to create a bootable USB. I used my laptop (which I'm currently on) and went to the Dell support site and downloaded the recovery image (.iso file) and tool (.msi file). That's where things stand. I haven't put those on my USB yet, but I have an empty 16GB stick ready to use.

My main questions are...

1) Will I actually be able to back things up if I use this method? I have an empty 2 TB external drive I could transfer things to if I simply gain access to the files on the internal drives. Again, I also have this laptop available to aid in the process. I don't have another desktop that I could put the drives in, so that isn't an easy option...however, I'd be willing to do that as a last resort. Anything to save the data.

2) If this IS a good method (USB recovery), what are the steps I need? If I could just back everything up, then at that point I don't really care if I have to re-format...I'll have my files anyway.

Thanks so much for reading and I hope I can make this work with your help!

Preferred Solution: How do I save my files if Windows 10 is corrupted/won't boot?

I recommend downloading and trying SP Photo Recovery. It will help find and retrieve your lost files.

I've used it in the past to recover photos, music, videos, and other multimedia files, regardless if the file has been deleted, lost, damaged or corrupted.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/UDbKNE. (This link will open the download page so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi. I will try to get this in simple as I can.
I have vista home prem. on laptop, acer 5420 4 gig ram, T58 proc's
1.____The drive won't start, boot sector is corrupt. Can I....
can I slave this drive & put the install disk in the cp & copy the boot sector
from the disk to the slaved vista home prem program?
What copy command? dos dummy...
I have already slaved the drive & I deleted the corrupt boot files, right or wrong I did it.
My Vista install disks do NOT have repair on them.
I have downloaded numerous "Repair disks" & they will not boot. Only thing I could get to boot was
a win7 repair disk as I understand that vista & win7 have somewhat interchangeable bits & bytes.
I have run bootrec.exe to no avail & chkdsk/f and a few others.
This drive has a lot of stuff on it & don't really want to start over.
below is probably why I cannot edit the boot sector files..
2._____ I have files that are locked & I did not lock them, how do I remove this? I saw this when I was doing a virus scan 80% of the files are locked, I think it to be a virus of some sort?
adhd & "Pathways" do not go together very well thanks for your help..I hope. cut....

Hi there,
just recently I have dowloaded a program (unfortunatley I have forgotten this) off a unknown site. Just after this my computer began to run extremely slow and both my browsers (Firefox and IE) were not working also my computer would not shut down; it would get to the point where it says windows is shutting down (on the blue screen) and just freeze, I would have to hold down the power button to switch off. At the time I was Using Norton as my AV and it did jack-all. I then removed Norton and replaced it with AVG 8.0. Unfortunatley AVG would not update (i'm guessing a virus was blocking it from updating?) so i had to do a directory update which was successful. Then after installing Spybot Search & Destroy both Spybot and AVG managed to remove a whole lot of trojans and malware. Now my computer will successfully shutdown and both my browsers began to work (although not 100%). After many repeated scans every day AVG and Spybot pick up trojans (which never seem to go away); "Virtuemonde" and "Win32.BHO.df" always show up and will not successfully be removed (and yes i have tried to scan and remove with internet disabled). Also if I goto My Computer and double click C: drive (local disk) it says:

Not sure if this is the right place to post this as it may be a hardware issue but as XP is the OS I thought it would be a good place to start.

I have an XP SP3 machine that was not booting correctly. At power on I would get a message saying "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt..." The file name would quite often be different.

I used the recovery option from the CDs supplied with the machine and this appeared to work for a while but then the problem resurfaced.
I tried a fresh install of XP SP3 from the OEM OS disc with the same results.
We then purchased a new hard drive and installed the OS with the same results.

It's quite an old machine so I'm wondering if there may be some other hardware-related issue that I'm not picking up on.

Any help appreciated.

I've been trying to get my computer back so that I can at least get some stuff on it I don't want lost for the past three days. I was updating an nvidia graphics driver and it froze. So I restarted my computer and things went down-hill from there.

Nothing I know to do (which is more than the average person) works. So most of (and perhaps all of) the quick fixes you all may suggest most likely have already been attempted at least once.

What I am experiencing now is a black screen with a gray bar on the top and bottom. The top is titled: Windows Boot Manager. This is written in the gray bar. The rest of the screen reads:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart you computer.
2. Choose your language setting and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

Did you try the suggested startup repair options with the windows 7 dvd/repair disc?

It may take several runs and will at least attempt to repair the partition table.

If you tried that already , then use the commands instead of auto startup repair - usually does the job.

Okay, so this morning I turned on my desktop computer, and I got a blue screen with an error message. I don't know why this happened, yesterday it was working fine. Here's part of the message:

STOP: c0000218 {Registry file failure} the registry cannot load the hive (file): \systemRoot\System32\config\sam

I rebooted my computer, and it said something about turning off wrong, and gave me options to either boot into safe mode, restart normally, or restart at the time that worked normally. All of them lead to the same error mesage with the blue screen.

I did a little research on this error, and found a microsoft help page about it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545
Instead of using the recovery console from the CD, I used my computer's recovery console (everytime I reboot, it gives me an option to go into the recovery console or continue normally, so I entered that recovery console, thinking it was the same as the CD's recovery console...) I was having issues with Windows crashing when waking up from sleep. Everything seemed to point to driver issues, and while chasing that down I deleted several Acronis drivers from the registry. Acronis had been uninstalled, but left some artifacts behind. When I rebooted I got an Boot Manager error - basically not found.

I ran Windows startup repair 2-3 times without effect.

Windows recovery shows 2 recent backups are present, but neither is visible from the Restore window.

Tried to repair the MBR from Partition Wizard (8.1) and although it was successful Windows still doesn't boot. PW shows the partition is present and active but not as boot.

Happy Monday . Any ideas?

A:Boot manager corrupted - Windows fails to boot

Are you saying that after editing the Registry Win7 will not start? This can be fatal if you didn't save a System Restore point before messing with the registry.

Try a System Restore from System Recovery Options as far back as necessary.

If that fails confirm that Win7 or it's System Reserved partition (preferred if you have it) is Partition Marked Active then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times.

If that doesn't help then everything that can possibly be done is here for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot leading up to if necessary rescuiing any files before running Recovery or doing the superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Hello all,

My copy of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my laptop has been having some strange issues lately. I cannot run .msi files, and device manager never populates a full list. Sometimes (rarely, but it does repeat) Windows Explorer will freeze, and if I attempt to close it and reopen it using task manager, the UI reloads, but whenever I click on a folder it claims Windows cannot load explorer. Restarting fixes that. I scheduled and ran CHKDSK, and it repaired a few bad sectors, but it didn't fix any of these problems. I have run CCleaner (both the regular cleaner and registry fixer) and defragmented my hard drive until it's only 1% fragmented. I then tried sfc /scannow, and it read a bunch of corrupted files but could not repair them. I read that to fix sfc, you must download and run Windows System Update Readiness Tool. It has been running and "Searching for Updates on this Computer" for about an hour now, and I'm getting concerned that it's just not doing anything. It's not frozen, the bar keeps moving from left to right and I can click on and off of it. I also have the logs from sfc if anyone wants to take a look at them, they'll be attached. The computer isn't very old, and has an intel i3 and 4gb of ram. If you would like any extra information to help, please reply and I'll get back to you as fast as I can Any recommendations on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for any and all help!

Hello,
Over the past few weeks, my Windows files have always been getting corrupted. The hard thing is that it is an error every different time saying that some file is missing. For example, today, I did a system restore. I have done this many times and before I got to the setup screen for windows, I got a blue screen that prompted me to restart my PC and it gave me the same error after I restarted. By the way, I have Windows 8.1. Files also get corrupted on Windows 10 for me. I can't find out what the error is but I suspect it is my SSD because files get corrupted before I even install anything. One example of an error was a memory read error. The weird thing is that I had my old SSD replaced by a warranty 2 months ago and 2 weeks after I received the new one and started it, everything started to get corrupted. I have probably restored my PC 30 times this week...

Hello Crimson, and welcome to Sevenforums!

First, what antivirus are you using?

Second, let this scanner run on your computer to search for infected files: Microsoft Safety Scanner - Antivirus | Remove Spyware, Malware, Viruses Free

See if this helps you with any firefox errors: How to Fix Mozilla Firefox | eHow.com

You are never supposed to run 2 or more antiviruses together on a single computer. Also, to remove any antivirus, you may need a special removal tool to make sure you get all the pieces. In addition to your antivirus, consider installing/updating/running (full scan) the free Malwarebytes software. Windows XP corrupted boot.ini and hal.dll missing, will not boot [SOLVED]

Hello,
I am having a problem booting my windows xp dell inspiron 700m. When I try to boot windows, it flashes "corrupted or missing boot.ini" for a split second, and then displays the message "System could not locate hal.dll" or something to that effect. I must have corrupted the MBR or the boot record and maybe even the partition tables. I went into windows recovery console, and did FIXMBR and FIXBOOT with no success. It is my understanding that windows recovery console should pull up a list of windows installs to choose from to fix. That did not come up, as it went straight to the C:\ recovery console prompt. Therefore the system seems to be unable to detect a windows install. I confirmed this by trying to use a windows xp upgrade, and it said that it couldn't detect any previously installed versions of windows and therefore would not update.

I can provide further laptop specs on request.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

And technical language is welcome, I am computer-proficient.

This is my first post so be easy on me. I am 72 and have been a computer user since the Atari days. I have used all versions of Windows since then and have managed to resolve most problems. Since Windows 8 and 8.1 I spend almost as much time trying to maintain Windows as I do using the computer. I have several corrupted files and have been unable to repair them. I was going to hold out until Windows 10, hoping that it's installation would resolve all issues, but decided I'd better enter the process with a functional 8.1. The corruptions don't seem to effect my programs except for IE 11, which is such a nightmare that have limited my browsing.

Even though I am new to MT Bleeping Computer forum, I am sure that this is not the first time my issue has been raised. I have been trying to download recent updates from Java and I keep getting a 1603 Error message. After doing some research, I have determined that I have several Windows system corrupted files; I have determined this by running the sfc scannow tool and the report shows several files that could not be repaired. Now I am stuck because I am not sure how to correctly repair these files.I am running Windows 7, and I am current with all Window updates. I have a Dell computer with a AMD Phenom 9650 Quad-Core Processor 2.30 GHz, Installed Memory 4.00 GB, and a 64-bit operating system.Do you have any ideas that I can fix these files, I have uploaded the sfc report for your review. Thanks for any given help.Lobo43

A:Windows 7 Corrupted System Files

You might want to have a look at this. It appears a recent Windows Update may be the culprit here, based on the files SFC couldn't repair:
utc.app.json
telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json

http://techish.net/cannot-repair-member-file-utc-app-json-microsoft-update-kb3022345-b0rken/
You may want to just uninstall update KB3022345, and try to reinstall it later.

I'm a little more worried by the fact that cmd.exe can't be repaired.
You may have to copy this file from a computer that has the exact same OS version and the exact same hardware architecture.
More on how to do that is here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929833#manually%20repair

I notice that after i run these commands in powershell or cmd: sfc /scannow, DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"} .

and run sfc /scannow again, I always get this. . It seems like my windows is always corrupted and I think that is causing my to get start menu, search menu, and task bar issues after standying by.

Anybody know what's wrong with my computer?

EDIT: I have to do a clean install apparently, also the Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers| Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register ?$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml?} command broke my apps.

A:Windows files always corrupted even after repairs?

Hi, running the Powershell command has not been recommended since build 10586 (November) came out.. it tends to break apps. You then see @ before their names in the start menu.

To fix this, you are recommended to do an in-place upgrade repair install (you can find instructions in the Tutorials section).

This will:
- keep most of your settings
- keep your programs
- turn system restore off
- restore all Windows apps
- take up to 2 hours
- lose all Windows updates since the last major build (10586)
- create Windows.old

You need a Windows installation medium.

Noted you have a Radeon card: problems have been reported with one dll related to Nvidia cards as regards the cbs .log. You would have to inspect your log to determine what it says.. but that's irrelevant if you do the repair install.

Post back if you still have your other problem.

Hello to all.

Some unexpected problem recently caused my windows installation to get corrupted and now I want to simply reinstall it and start anew with a fresh install. However, some important files were in the directory where windows is installed and now I'm having some difficulty in getting them out. The windows installation directory was in the local disk C: .

The problem is that I can't boot normally and in safe-mode. I tried using my windows boot cd to try and repair windows. The commands chkdsk, bootcfg /rebuild, fixmbr and fixboot all did not work. I also tried installing windows in another completely unused drive, which was D:. However, when I try to do this, it says that it is checking the hard disks and freezes when it is checking C:, after which I am left with no option but to restart.

The files are inside a folder in C: Drive, outside the WINDOWS Folder, so I was hoping if I could somehow uninstall windows only but can't figure out how to do that.

Right now, I just need a way to copy that folder in C Drive, put it in any of the other drives (D, E or F) and then reformat and reinstall. The OS is Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2.

Is there anyway I can get this done?

Thanks for any help.

A:Need to transfer files. Corrupted windows won't allow me to.

Hi Rydium,

Your best shot might be to make a boot CD that has its own OS self contained. Booting to one of those will allow you to copy your files if they are still readable on the drive.

A BartPE CD or a Linux live CD would do that. Google for those and you'll get plenty of instructions.

There are other ways too but they are command line driven and pretty clumsy for most folks.

There is a possibility that your files will not be visible due to media damage, file system corruption, disk errors, or missing system permissions.

You could also slave the drive in another computer and see if the files are readable.

Good luck. Post back if you have questions.

Hi,

I'm having trouble booting up. And when I try and select last best known configuration for the boot up and select default settings or whatever it gives me this message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\system32\config\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using
the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start
repair."

If I try a regular bootup my computer will reboot as soon as I see the windows logo.

I tried using a Linux CD to boot up into Linux (thinking maybe I can copy whatever file I need through that) but it just ends up going to a black screen. I also tried the system recovery at first and I thought it was fine but when I rebooted afterward it never booted up to Windows and now I can't even do a system recovery either.

I don't have recovery discs (they are on one of the drives in my pc) and I don't have a Windows XP disc either, so I'm wondering if there is anyway I can fix this without getting an XP disc? Losing all my data is not a concern as I have backed it up prior to this, I would just like to get this thing up and running again. Also, my computer doesn't have a floppy drive.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I just bought an Acer Aspire 5336 Series from my friend, the laptop worked flawless, but, he had a lot of programs, video editing, music editing, games, ect. I decided I wanted to do a restore back to factory settings, well, about halfway through the restore, it got an error, now when I try to boot from the HDD, it says a file is missing from System32. It tells me to use the repair disk to fix it. I put the repair disc on a USB, and tried to boot it up, I get message saying "Error Loading Operating System". I Struggled with it for a bit before I decided to try to load Ubuntu on to it instead, I put Ubuntu on a USB stick, went to boot, same error. I also get the same error with Windows XP, I tried to format the entire drive, but the formatting program gets the same error when booted from. I am confused at this point. The thing is I have a Desktop and now this laptop, the DVD Drive in the Desktop doesn't work, that is why I have been using the USB Stick. Could the fact that I am using a USB be the problem? Rather then a CD/DVD? I need some help, I am pretty desperate at this point, thanks.

Hey there, I've been having this problem with my OS and I'm not sure what to do. Maybe you guys can help. Basically, I've lost access to all of my docs, music, and items on desktop. I have a duel-boot with Vista and Windows 8. I primarily use Windows 8 which is on an SSD and I just have the other hard drive for storage but it has Vista on it. One day I was there cleaning up and deleting programs. I then restarted my computer but now I can no longer get back into my Vista boot. I have no idea why this has happened. Here is what I get when I try to boot to Vista:

So I insert the disk and try to recover. The recovery tool seems to work and it finds an error but it creates or replaces my Vista boot with one called “Windows Vista Home Premium (recovered)”. I can boot to that but it is not on my profile, I get a notification in my task bar that says “Your profile was not loaded correctly!”

All my program files are still there but I have no desktop, no pictures, no music, no docs. Basically everything in my Users\”Name” files is gone. But I don't think it's truly gone because I didn't lose any space on my hard drive. So what should I do? Is there any way to recover my profile and files or am I screwed? Any ideas are appreciated!

I don't know how it happened, I probably got overly ambitious with a disk cleanup utility and now several functions of windows 7 don't work. New updates don't install, other updates that I DID install are missing, I am unable to run certain games, and I can't run SFC /scannow.

However virus scan updates appear to be fine.

What is the best way to fix this? I have an old backup I did with Norton Ghost on disk but something is wrong with the second disk so I can't use to to reinstall the entire backup but I might be able to extract some old files if I knew which ones to extract.

I am running Window Seven Home Premium. It is a legal copy. I got it directly from Microsoft.

If I try to run SFC /scannow from Windows I cannot get it to show up or do anything. Its like I never did anything. If I try to run SFC /scannow from the boot CD using this command

I have Windows 8.1 Pro and a HP Envy Notebook. I am able to boot into Windows and had no apparent problems when everything froze up yesterday while working in Quicken. After waiting several minutes with no change and and unresponsive keyboard and touchscreen, I pressed control/alt/del, and I got a (blank) BSOD. After waiting several more minutes, I pressed the button down for several seconds to turn off the notebook, removed battery, reinserted battery and then turned the the notebook back on. After rebooting into Windows, there were no apparent problems. I decided to run sfc scannow and discovered that there are several corrupted files that cannot be repaired. I ran the scan several times, rebooting each time, but the corrupted files persisted. Where do I go from here? Thank you.
BTW, in the Event Viewer there were no application errors. I did see several MCUpdate errors which began on 7/9 (today is 7/14). Again, thank you for any help. I'm not very computer literate, so I have no idea where to go from here and am hoping I do not have to do a reinstallation. I'm going to put my previous post regarding my problems with corrupted DLL files following a clean install after a major crash. This is for background purposes:
[[Just finished a clean install of Windows XP Home. Computer had black screen with error message. I made several attempts at repairing system using the original install disk. Did multiple malware and virus sweeps. Finally got it working again but it refused to update Windows Security files, constant crashes, hangs, etc. After more repair attempts and malware sweeps gave up and did clean install after backing up my files.

After spending 12 hours on the process of the clean install, installing antivirus software, browsers and security updates, the most recent Windows updates were installed as I restarted (for the 679th time today) whereupon the next bootup was preceded by the computer running CHKDSK on the blue screen. About half a year ago, give or take, I ordered a Windows 8 OEM disk to install on my laptop. Machine runs fine, even upgrading to the 8.1 Preview and eventually to 8.1, and dual-booting Ubuntu GNOME. Life is good.

The most recent system update, however, continuously fails for some reason, giving me no error messages.
I've tried running sfc /scannow and DISM commands, but both of those fail, saying that there are corrupted system files preventing them from working.

The normal way to fix corrupted system files with Windows 8 would be to Refresh. However, I can't refresh with my install disk because it's not an 8.1 disk. I've tried using the trick with creating a useable ISO file, but that trick fails because the Product Key I'm using is a developer's license, not retail.

Any more ideas without starting from scratch? Thanks in advance.

RELEVANCY SCORE 49.6

Hey, I'm using a Windows 8.1 64-bit OS and have been running into a few BSOD problems (notable REFERENCE_TO_POINTER and BAD_HEADER_POOL errors). I've tried testing my memory using memtest86 and checking for viruses to no avail. A recent SFC scan has come up with a few corrupted files but I'm not sure how to fix 'em.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello MrTastix, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since this is a Windows 8.1 issue, I would recommend to post at our sister site www.eightforums.com instead.

Some of my C:\Windows\Media files appear to have been corrupted. When I try to preview sounds, some of them play and some don't. My Windows Startup sounds distorted. (I am running Windows XP Home). Can I restore them from my installation disk? What is the safest way to do this? I would appreciate any input.
