Bouncing emails that I didn't send

Q: Bouncing emails that I didn't send

For several months now I receive "bounced" email messages from a variety of people. The problem is, I am NOT sending the emails that are bouncing back to me, but everyone of these people (who I do NOT know) think I am sending them and I am getting back some fairly harsh responses.

The offending sender seems to be someone from a company called "cura heat patch", but when I try to contact them the emails will not go through.

This morning I tried to reply to one of their messages, and unfortunately it seems to have gone to dozens of people instead of them, and now I have alot more people cranking at me to stop sending them messages, when in fact I am not.

What could be causing this? and do you have any suggestions on how to stop it?

Thank you

Preferred Solution: Bouncing emails that I didn't send

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Curious observation; maybe nothing, but not sure....    I have a few emails stating "[SPAM]Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender" which appear to be emails that it says I sent, but I did not.     Rejected as SPAM from "Mail Delivery System".

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.....

A:Emails i didn't send

Many spam and phishing emails appear to be from an address which isn't the real address they were sent from. I have had phishing emails which appeared to come from my own address. The "From" address can be changed. Presumably, someone has used your email address for this purpose.

I am going nuts, in the last 4 days, I have recieved hundreds of email delivery failure messages on my hotmail account. I have sent none of these, however, a small fractionof them DO appear in my sent items folder. I have run my AVG, and an online scan, results are zero, I have run Spybot S+D, nothing found. I searched the web and found a few references to this email, from a couple years ago, but nothing current, can youadvise what I should try next. The text of the email is :

Hello, I'm a newbie, just joined today after a friend told me this is the place to go for the problems I'm having. Today is the second time in a week that an email went out with my name but I didn't send it. All my friends respond saying I must have a virus.
So, in the simplest terms, (I'm not a computer person at all), what would you suggest I do to get rid of whatever it is that I have. I'm sure my friends are getting tired of getting these strange emails from me!!
Thanks for any advice you can give me....gosh, I hope it's easy to follow instructions. I'm sure the emails are going out from my laptop, not my big computer 'cos this is the one that's probably the least protected.

I am using Microsoft XP w/Outlook for email. Following is an example of the type of error messages I'm receiving by the hundreds every day, and I didn't send to these addresses:

The sender in this case is [email protected]
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at emporiki-asset.gr.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

<[email protected]>:

system error
I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long.

I have run Norton 360 and it doesn't detect a virus.
What is this and how do I stop it for good???

I have 3 home computers

Office Desktop ... running Windows Vista
Bedroom Desktop... running Windows XP
Laptop... running Windows XP

All computers are on a Linksys wireless network so I really don't know which one is causing the problem. I assume this will require a separate post for all three computers so I added Office Desktop to my subject to indicate which computer these logs, etc. are coming from.

Okay now my problem is that I am receiving hundreds of returned emails to my private email address just today indicating they were returned/blocked/etc. The problem is that I didn't send any of these emails. I assume either they are being sent from my system without my knowledge OR someone is using my email return address to SPAM people.

I am first posting the information from the Windows Vista system because it would not run the Panda Scan and thus finished all "Steps before Posting" quicker than the other two which are still running the Panda Scan.

About 3-4 weeks ago people started calling saying their emails to me were bouncing back as undeliverable.

Issues
1. Emails to me are intermittenly bouncing back to the senders. Not good!
2. Pages change slowly in my browsers
3. Delayed mouse clicks, (intemitten)
4. Programs open slowly. Sometimes they do not appear on my screen, so I try to open them again and get a message that that program is open...where is the question. then I go to System manger turn off the program and re-open. that usually works.

I'm running a scan with a fresh download of MBAM right now, it could take a while.

Thanks,
yarlac

We use a third party to host our email publication lists. Previousy, when we would send out a publication, I'd usually see a handful of bounced messages in the bounce report. On March 6th some time between 9:30am and 11:00am about half of our clients (from various different companies) started bouncing our publications sent from the listserver (emails sent from from our exchange server, which has a different IP address, are going through just fine). I checked our domain name on the blacklist lookup through MXtoolbox and we got the all clear. I then looked up the IP address for our listserver and it did return one blacklisting with Sorbs, but that appeared to have been listed some time ago. I got Sorbs to delist the IP address. They confirmed the delisting on Tuesday around 1:00pm. I understand that it can take some time for DNS to refresh and propagate around the internet, but it is now Friday and I'm still seeing the same number of bounces.

In the bounce reports under bounce reasons, I'm seeing either a blank space, "Spam," or "service unavailable."

I have a trouble ticket open with the company that hosts our listserver, but so far they haven't been much help. I'm also talking to a couple of network administrators on the receiving end, but due to the sheer volume of the bounces, I don't know how I could reach out to all of our client's IT folks, but I'm hoping someone could shed some light on what changed on March... Hi! I'm newly registered her but have been here before and found great information.
I have searched and read previous posts on the AOL issues and luckily I got rid of them many years ago.
My question is this. Has anyone ever heard of having to PAY AOL to keep your server off of their blacklist? I'm on another forum (a local club that I'm a board member of) and the guy that set it up says that he's going to ban aol users because of the bouncing and that they refuse to pay AOL to keep it from happening. Being a club and it being one of the ways we communicate, the board members don't want to ban anyone. I'm pretty much all over the net on different groups and have never heard of this.
Thanks for any info on this!

I have a problem with my email that I can't figure out and hope that someone here can shed some light for me.

Here's the problem:

A few weeks ago I found that a site that I am subscribed to for daily email notifications to play trivia suddenly stopped. Then, a few days later (June 16th) I received a message from Brink that my email notifications here were bouncing back. (I am subscribed to the Funny You Tube Videos thread.) Funny thing is, I did receive a notification from his PM that my emails were bouncing yet I didn't receive any from those who had posted to the Funny You Tube Video thread just 6 days ago even though I did change my email for this site to an alternate email client on the 16th of June and did receive a notification from Brink at the new email address after I had changed it and I did get a notification from my friend here that I sent a message to a few days ago at that new address yet still, non from those who had posted in the Funny Video thread. Weird huh?!?!

Since I was notified about my emails bouncing, I've realized that I am not getting emails from my daughters school newsletters either. If it were just one domain that this was happening to I'd say it was them. What really confuses me is that I get notifications from PM's here but not from threads!! I'm curious to see if I get one from this thread at the new email client.

So, even if you don't know the solution to this issue would someone please just post to say hi or something so I can see if ... Read more

Hi... I'm in help desk in my company. We're having an issue with emails sent to Hotmail, they're being rejected. Microsoft answered, via website:

"Welcome to Microsoft Community. We understand how important for you to be able to send an email to Microsoft accounts from your domain account.

You need to get in touch with the Microsoft Sender Support Team. They have to fill out the e-form that can be found on the following link to solve your issue with the error code 550 SC-002 where your emails sent from your domain to Microsoft Account rejected for policy reasons.

If you are the 3rd party Domain Administrator:

Please review our policies and guidelines at http://postmaster.live.com.
If you are in compliance, submit a support request to our Email and Delivery Filtering Services team by clicking on the link to the e-form under the troubleshooting section in the postmaster site mentioned above.

Let us know if you have further questions.

Thank you. "

... but the problem is that mails sent to Gmail are being rejected too... So I suppose that our servers are being considered as spammers, for the time being, for some reason. Is there a workaround to this without having to contact either Hotmail or Gmail? That's dealing with obnoxious bureaucrats... if you ever can get a hold of them...

Hi folks,

I had bouncing emails which I believe I tracked down to fact I was using a domain forwarder and email forwarder, which added its own server IP address to email headers. Then when about 2 or 3 mths ago every ISP in the land (UK) switched on SPF, my own ISP's SPF blocked out a lot of email that was addressed for me, on the basis that it was spam (my ISP told me this happened if it came from another company that ran SPF, or whose ISP ran SPF, because my ISP's SPF would be able to do a lookup of domain vs. IP address, and lo-and-behold, any email that had been forwarded now looked like spam !).

Very annoying - lost lots of client and candidate emails without knowing...
I was told the problem was that I was using email forwarding - no surprise I suppose - even my untrained eye could tell that email forwarding is a bit of a hack...

Anyhow, what I did was move my domain hosting in-house with my ISP so its properly hosted and I no longer need any domain forwarding or email forwarding, which I'm told should fix the problem.

BUT - how can I be sure it has ? is there any sort of diagnostic I can run or check I can do ?

..would hate to lose another 2 mths email - would probably put me out of bizness

lotsa love
C.

I've had the same email address for years and would like to keep it. It's a Yahoo email. I accidentally signed up for something a long time ago which is a 'no no'. I have 2 emails and usually have one for regular and one for spam but I messed up and now have spam coming to my regular email.
With Yahoo everything has been going into the spam folder just fine with the occasional one that ends up in the inbox, But I hate having spam constantly coming to that email because if I get an important email message that accidentally goes into spam I have to search and find it threw the 60+ spam emails I get daily.
I recently downloaded MailWasher and got the pro version on a free trial and I have been using the bounce back feature hoping that if I bounce back enough spam emails they will remove me from the list assuming my email address has been deleted. So far I've had it not even a week but I wanted to ask is using the bounce back feature a good idea? Does it really work? Or is there anything else I can do to remove my email from spam lists or make the spammers believe my email address has been deleted even though it hasn't.

I would really really really want to keep this email address so please don't reply with "delete your email and create a new one" because I really don't want to have to do that. I'll live with having spam than deleting the email address.

A:Bouncing Emails...Good idea?

No, it is not a good idea.
The return address is usually that of an innocent person. You may be sending back mail to someone that considers it spam.

Hi Aroominyork, it is possible the mail server you use for sending mail has been added to a black list which is now causing you issues.

You need to find the IP of your SMTP server (which you can find probably in the returned emails), if not then copy and paste the contents of one of the returned emails here and we should be able to find it.

When you have the IP, try typing it in here and see what results you get.

Every person in my contact list (business and personal) receives an email from me with some spam attachment. The first time it happened I figured I had opened some spam email in error that had an option that gave the sender permission to send it to ALL my contacts. This second time however, I was not even using my laptop. It will be a link to some online shopping store. Quite embarrassing as it looks like I sent them all this link to some junk email. Is this a virus? I use hotmail as my email account. How can I get it to stop? Any ideas are appreciated. Thank You

MS Office Outlook sending emails but no emails to send? I have added a few new accounts to my outlook and have had nothing but problems since. It is important that I keep these emails in my outlook, because I work from home and need to access these accounts. I have recently noticed, whenever I hit send receive, the number rises everyday, which now has me concerned. Each account has a different amount "sending", but nothing is in the outbox. IE: account A: sending 1 of 135, Account B: sending 1 of 1020 and so on. I also read online somewhere that if I was a torrent user, that "is" my problem, but I have stopped using it for weeks and there is no traffic going in or out, and I've turned the program off completely.

I've used Outlook for years, with many accounts and have never had problems. I've noticed more problems since this 'sending' message has started. I also noticed, I was the ONLY one at work not getting any SPAM for at least 2 yrs, UNTIL, I took a few days off, went back to work and BAM, hit with SPAM. Its a bloody nuisance because my accounts are linked with "rules and alerts", so if one is infected, all others follow behind! Has one or all of my accounts been compromised? If so, can it be fixed?

I have a security problem with AOL 7.0 (on Windows 98) that I have been unable to resolve. I am getting lots of “Returned Mail: User Unknown” emails. A couple of weeks ago I was getting 100’s of these emails each day. When I looked at one of these emails, it shows that the email was sent by me to another AOL member who doesn’t exist. However, I never sent this! Also in this email is a link to a porn site. I called AOL and they recommended two things: to update the latest virus definitions and change the password. I have Norton SystemWorks 2001 so I did a Live Update and downloaded the latest definitions. I ran Live Update 2 more times until I was up to date. Then I did a full scan of my hard drive and it did not find any viruses. Next I changed the password to something you wouldn’t find in the dictionary. Even after doing all this, I am still getting these Returned Mail: User Unknown emails. I called AOL again and they can’t figure it out. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be the problem or how I can resolve this? Any advice would be appreciated.
A side note: I have Internet Explorer 5.0 with Cipher Strength 128-bit. Would upgrading the browser help?
FYI: I use a dial-up to get to AOL and no other person has access to my computer.

I know spammers have some pretty slick techniques but.....how do i stop this ? On my yahoo account i get a lot of emails especially lately that are FROM my address, going to either someone else or the same username at a different provider, like aol.

So, it makes it look like I sent it!!!!!! How do I stop it???? How can they send email from MY address??? And then i'm getting "mail returned" messages saying that the other address that "I" sent it to doesn't exist. So, not only are they using my address but they are wastiing internet bandwidth sending to non-existant addresses!!!!!

Spam makes me so mad. Almost mad enough to become an Activist in stopping spam. I think we should eliminate "anonymous" email services completely especially yahoo and hotmail.

Today on my hotmail account, I've received 3 emails saying "Mail Delivery Failed: returning message to sender". In the email it says:

"This message has been rejected because it has an apparently executable attachment "application.pif" This is a virus prevention measure. If you meant to send this file then please package it up as a zip file and resend it."

But the thing is, I never sent any emails with any attachments. I haven't sent any emails with my hotmail account in months, I only use it to receive email from people. Could this mean I have a virus on my computer? Or something else? I have Norton Antivirus 2003 which came with Norton Internet Security 2003, and my last virus scan was Friday, and it was clean. What should I do?

I am having a problem with 'returned e-mail' that I haven't sent. When I retrieve my mail I'll have a bunch of these e-mail failure notices. I spoke to Cox about the problen and they suggested that the problem was a virus in my machine that was sending out e-mails. I went out of town for a few days (I turned off my computer whenI left) When I returned there were about 200 of these pesky undelivery notices, so I don't think they are being generated from my machine. Is there a solutio to this besides changing my e-maul address? It's our business address so I am very reluctant to cancel it.

I run Win XP Pro and am using MS Outlook.

Cheers.

A:Returned e-mails I didn't send.

Its usually a case of the "from" address on these e-mails being "spoofed" by the true sender.

What will have happened is that your e-mail address is in someones address book.

Their PC has become infected with a virus, and it's sending out e-mails made to look like they have come from an address picked at random (yours) from their address book.

There is nothing you can do about it apart from talking to everyone that might have your address on their PC, and getting them to check for infection. Usually thats not a practical option.

I tried to run the three programs on my computer but on each one I got the message below. "Illegal operation attempted on a regisstry key that has been marked for deletion."I think this is because I had already run ComboFix. The log from that is attached.I have a Vista Ultimate desktop that has Outlook 2007. A few days ago I heard from friends who had received email from my account with just a link in the body. I had not sent the emails and they weren't in my Sent folder. A friend who is a network admin had me unintall my avg software and download the trial version of Avast to run a boot scan from. I did that and nothing showed up. Then he told me to download and run ComboFix which I did. The log is attached. Thanks!I restarted my infected computer and now the programs run. DDS is below. other two logs are attached.Again, a couple of days ago I learned that people I knew were getting emails from my email address with nothing but a web link in the body. One friend opened the link and his av software blocked it saying it was an attack page. I did not send the emails and they aren't in my Sent folder but the people getting them are all in my Contacts folder in Outlook. I am using Vista Ultimate and Outlook 2008. I have disconnected the computer from my home network. Thanks!DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Bill at 14:58:07.73 on Sun 06/13/2010Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18904Microsoft? Windows Vista? I checked my email yesterday and there were five emails that were undeliverable. I didn't send them. They went to different email addresses but looked the same (ex: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], etc.). There was a .txt file that was attached to each one. I didn't open it. I've deleted the emails and scanned my computer with MSE and Malwarebytes. Neither one found any issues.

A:undeliverable mail that I didn't send

Most likely that a spammer spoofed your address. Not much you can do in that situation.

The other option would be your email account was hacked. You'd need to check the headers or server logs to verify.

Hello, at my job we have Microsoft exchange. Prior to this we used a webmail serivice. When we originally switched over, I had two sections with inbox, sent, etc. One was the old one with all of my old emails, and the other (on top) was the new exchange inbox.

I recently switched computers and copied all of my user data but for some reason, outlook only shows the exchange inbox and not my old one (which has neccessary emails). Why would this happen? When I log into the old webmail that housed these emails and nothing is there. It was there last week prior to switching computers.

I am using windows 7 pro, office 13 outlook exchange.

A:Exchange didn't copy my old emails?

Sorry if that is confusing. I guess what I want to know is, where did my old emails go prior to switching to exchange? They were in there before switching computers, so I am not sure why they would have disappeared!

Hi All

I wonder can someone offer an explanation here please as I am totally baffled by recent events.

I have McAfee VSPro 7 and SpamKiller installed on both my PC and Laptop (2 licenses purchased for each product) and they are regularly updated automatically by McAfee Updater. I always ensure I have the latest virus definition files installed and I also have Norton Anti-Virus scan my e-mail by my webhost.

I received two e-mails this weekend from friends/contacts of mine saying that they received spam e-mail from me... which I didn't send. They realised it wasn't me that sent it hence informing me of the spam email. I am happy to post the messages/further details her if requried.

How is this possible?? I just don't understand... can someone explain what might be happening here and how this is at all possible please.

Thanks

I apologize if this was covered in the body of another thread, I couldn't find it based on the subject lines.

My Trend Micro complete security suite was running at all times. I did not open any suspicious email (from unrecognized sender) and avoided all forwarded email. I have no idea where this malware originated. I suspect a trojan horse of some kind. I hesitate to try free scans from other security software (like norton), because these companies are notorious for putting code onto computers that is extremely difficult to remove and can interfere with installation of a different security program.

I need to fix this fast and apologize to everyone on my contact list (whew, that's going to be a big deal, unless there's some way to send a bulk email without revealing everyone's email address without adding each contact individually and using Bcc.

Please help, I ran a deep Trend Micro scan that came up empty. I've trusted Tech Guys for years, this is the big one...

I have already changed my password and security question at gmail. I am running Microsoft's malicious software tool right now.

I read somewhere on the forum that to save all your Outlook 2007 emails, you have to save the "C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook.pst" file.

I have saved this file as well as the whole folder, but after installing Windows 7, I tried to put all the files in the same spot, yet Outlook creates its own "Outlook1.pst" file and ignores the one I put in. I tried to import as well with no luck. I only had about 10 emails but they were job related and pretty important. Can someone please help?

We just upgraded from Netscape 4.0 to 7.2. None of the email settings, or the address book, or the saved emails transferred. (This could be because I used Internet Explorer 6 to do the download because Netscape 4.0 was very very slow starting up on this new DSL modem?) We got the email settings from the ISP and managed to "import" the old address book after saving it to an .ldif file. But when we try to import the old saved emails and email folders we have created ourselves, Netscape 7.2 tells us to choose from an email user profile list, but the list is blank, and accepting the dialogue results in a dead end (the dialogue box reappears with buttons grayed out).
We're using Windows 98 on a Pentium II 350MHz Dell PC with 192 MB RAM.
How can we get our Netscape 4.0 emails into our Netscape 7.2 email program when there is a blank user profile list in the import program? (We have never used MS Outlook or MS Outlook Express and would prefer not to.)
I realize this is probably an obscure question, so I'd sure appreciate any help you can give us.

paulavan,

Welcome to TSG

The install had nothing to do with you downloading with IE or it should not but if you did the online install then it may of. I always download the full install. http://sillydog.org/narchive/

Transfer Netscape / Mozilla Mail Files to New Profile

http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns7mailtrnsfr.html

Back up or only copy from your old 4.x profile to your new profile. That way your have everything in case something does not go right.

The dealing with profiles in netscape 7 is not like 4 and it more tricky.
Look at doing Performing a "Clean" Install for Netscape 7.xx or Mozilla 1.xx too.

The other day I noticed my task bar window showing "scanning outgoing e-mail" when I hadn't sent anything. The next day I had 2 mailer daemon messages saying that the e-mails were undeliverable - to a whole list of addresses I've never seen or heard of!

How can this happen and what can I do to keep it from happening again? I've checked my server and can't find any useful info. I use Outlook Express for my e-mail with IE for my internet via Comcast.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions!

My partner and I both have hotmail live email accounts. I had his emails forwarding to mine because he doesn't regularly check his. I set this up years ago and don't even remember exactly how I did it.

The last email to him that was forwarded into my email was on 13 May.

Using his laptop I logged into his account directly and the Outlook Mail page looks different to mine. There were no emails in his account at all.

Using my laptop and email account I sent an email to his address and this came through to his email on his laptop but did not bounce forward into mine.

There were definitely emails sent to him in the last 19 days.

Any ideas on what is happening? And how we can find the emails that haven't turned up anywhere?

Thanks in advance.

I have a big list of email addresses in both .csv and .doc format. I want to send out a one time email advertising my business. It would take an eternity to manually send these out. And preferably I'd like to send one email per address without having a bunch of CC addresses because that will cause it to get flagged as spam.

Any suggestions?
