[SOLVED] Baffled again, double-click does not open hard drives but right click will

Q: [SOLVED] Baffled again, double-click does not open hard drives but right click will

I have recently noticed some odd behavior in my computer, for some reason when I open My Computer and double click on a hard drive (I have 3) it will not open the drive. However I can still right-click and choose Explore to get around it.

At first I thought that this was a virus but after 3 scans with SpyBot I am still clean. Any ideas? It's not critical but I do find it odd.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I recently had a trojan on my computer (WORM_VB.CBW). I have removed it but I can't fix the drive problem it causes. If you double click a drive in my computer istead of opening the folder it brings up the 'open with' menu always. If you right click the drive, Auto is in bold instead of open. How do I solve this?

Cheers

Not sure if this is correct place to post but here is my problem.

Recently, I purchased a built computer from a small PC shop. I had trouble connecting to the internet, so the technician who built it came and added a network adapter card and changed some settings. (Not sure what he did.) After he left, my drives were not detected at all, not in My Computer nor in Device Manager so I did a system restore, which got the drives back but then I had trouble connecting to the internet again. So, I undid the system restore and connected OK again. A day later, I noticed I could not open a disc by double clicking on the drive in My Computer. I have two optical drives and it?s the same with both drives. I can right click and open to view files but not play disc. ( Movie nor music.) I can play them through the autoplay dialogue box though. I went into safe mode and tried and they will play in there by double clicking the drive.
What happens when I try to play by double clicking the drive is I got a message first saying, ?The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs Control Panel.? I checked the Default Programs and they were set properly. Then, when I tried double clicking the drives again, got a different message. This time saying, ?Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. Initially, whenever I double clicked any drive icon, it denied access and my anti-virus (AOL Active Virus Shield) showed a warning (not-a-virus: trojan). I treated the threats (deleting infected files).

After that, whenever I double clicked any drive icon, it just opened an "Open With" box. I created a new open action using Windows Explorer as the application.

But now, it just says "action denied". I have to right click the drive and select open from the menu to open any drive. Folders and everything else work fine.

By the way, I know there was a topic called "double clicking folders opens search window" but the links in that topic just generate an error message...

Help please. Thank you in advance.

A:Double Click Doesn't Open Drives

Run CHKDSK on that drive and try Doug Knox's folder_open.vbs if you continue to have problems.Always back up your registry before making any changes. If you are not familiar with working in the registry, then you should NOT attempt to make any changes on your own. Improper changes to the registry could adversely affect your computer and render it inoperable. If the above does not resolve the issue then your symptoms could be related to a flash drive infection. In that case download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program. The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.Reboot your computer when done.

Correct. "Folder Options" refers to Windows Explorer. The "folders" within a program, like WLM, are under the control of the program. However I noticed that my version of WLM (2009) behaves the way you want without the "Reading" pane turned on. If I turn it on then a single click shows the email in the reading pane. If I turn it off, it takes a double click to open the email to view it. The reading pane is controlled via the "Layout" Viewing option.

I installed Panda Antivirus a few days ago because of a problem with the svhost.exe. I know some worms can take over or disguise as this file. I had Avast and i was happy with it, but i tried PANDA and removed around 352 viruses? WTF?

ok, yesterday, when i was about to access one of my hard drives ( D it opened a window asking me to choose the program i wish to use to open the next file!!!! Windows explorer is no one of the options, i can access the content when i click "explore" or with Internet explorer, but not with double click. Now, i'm not expert, but something seems to be infected here.

i went back with a system restore, nothing, i ran spyware Doctor and in the middle of the process, Panda jumped removing four more times the same svhost thingie located in

Program files/microsoft/i

i went there to check what the heck is going on in there, i had to folders, one called "I" and another called "H" with files and pictures i once had in a removable drive, i deleted the folders.
I knew the removable drive was infected, we cleaned it with panda four days ago, why would that info be in a microsoft folder on Program files?
It is interesting that the moment i tried to access D:, Panda gave me the window that it removed the svhost stuff.

It said clearly:

Bueos dias F_V,

Bienvenido TSG. That does suggest a type of autorun infection causing changes there, but let's start with some diagnostic scans, then make repairs as needed.

Download HijackThis from Here. Click on the downloaded file to install HijackThis. Then open HijackThis and select Do a system scan and save logfile. Use copy/paste and post that log to your new thread.

Also go Here and download Silent Runners to your desktop. Run it, and post back here the log it creates. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious. It will create a file named Startup Programs, and will notify when the scan is complete. Copy the log from the Startup Programs file back here along with the HijackThis log please.

Hello,

I'm new here and this will be my first post. I've been having a problem with my computer. I don't really know what's wrong with it but the following are problems I have encountered:

-Can't double-click a hard drive from My Computer. But I can access it through other methods. Whenever I double-click a hard drive from My Computer , "WScript.exe" executes as I have seen through the Task Manager.

-Can't access REGEDIT. I'm getting the "Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator" error even though I am logged in with an administrator account. I have managed to fix it with a VBscript found here. But every time I reboot my computer registry editing is disabled again.

-The file TTMS613.dll.vbs and an autorun file for it have been lurking in my system even though I have deleted them several times.

-When I attached my flash drives to my computer they too got infected with the TTMS613.dll.vbs file.

I'm hoping that somebody has seen this issue and can help. I'm running RC 7100 and it's working great. The one problem I have occurs consistently after the machine has been running for about 24 hours. Suddenly you can no longer open files / folders or start programs by double clicking on the icon.

It works when first booted, then stops. If you reboot it works again.

I tried changing the options such that you can open with a single click, and it didn't fix the problem.

Hi!

I have a problem regarding double click to open folders. Besides from folders, I have no problems with double clicking. To open a folder I have to right click and chose "Open" as the default is "Explore". When I double click I recieve the following message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

I've looked at the Default Programs, but can't find what file extension the folders have and where I find to associate them with "Open". Though I do believe it's a registry fault/corruption, but I'm not entirely sure.

I've had this problem for a week or two and the only application I can think of that I've installed would be msn. I also did a windows update to SP 1, though that was after I already had this error. I'm currently using Windows 7 Enterprise SP1.

Do you guys have any idea what could be wrong and how I fix it?

Thanks for help in advance.

Hello,Over the last week or so I have encountered a problem which I have been unable to solve.
I use a seperate SDD on which I play DCS World Games .Win7 is also on that disk as part of a dual boot but here it only serves to operate the games and ancilliaries.
I have found that when clicking on 'Computer' in the Start Menu or the icon on Desktop ; there is no response and I cannot gain access to computer on on that disk.
I have run various malware, anti virus programs but all seems clear . I have formatted and reinstalled Win7 and the games from DCS. At first all was well but the problem has returned . I should have mentioned that last week the problen extended to 'Task Manager' ans 'Waste Basket' ; neither would open to a double click.

The fact that the problem has returned makes me believe that a virus is high on the list of suspects but I cannot locate it.

Could you please help me with this?

Hello. Using vb.net, I've been trying to figure out how to paste the clipboard into the window your mouse pointer is pointed.

If anyone has used unix you are familiar with what i am asking for; just to double right click or middle click and to paste the content of clipboard to the given window.

Can anyone offer any ideas for .net?

I would use double right click, or middle click, or single right click.

Please respond with your ideas~

Thanks

Hi,
Somehow my Windows XP has changed.
Used to be double left click on a folder or file to open it - that suits me fine! How do I get it back to that from what it is now ? Please?
However now if I double left click I get the "search" folder option - like the one you can access by left clicking on "start" and left clicking on the search option - just so I'm explaining clearly I hope.
If I right click on a file/folder I get the context menu with "search" as the top option and "open" as the second or third down.

All help much appreciated,
T I A

Richard.

hi

i am using xp sp2 (home edition), it was infected by ntde1ect.com which was detected and deleted by kaspersky antivirus.. however i had to manually delete files from the registry that were called ntde1ect.com

afterwards i wasnt able to access my C drive by double clicking it, i received "open with" prompt. i googled this problem and was able to solve it

now i have the same issue with flash memory, i used different flash memories and i always get "open with prompt" even if i right click and chose open or explore...
i can open it by writing the drive letter in address

i checked for autorun files (showed hidden files.....) but they didnt exist

i think its some thing with the registry but Any suggestions???......

Welcome to TSG hamlet123

Here is some information that will be useful to you:

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/04/19/unable-to-open-hard-or-usb-flash-drive-with-windows-script-host-cannot-find-script-file-autorunvbs-error/

In some situation especially when anti-virus program has cleaned, healed, disinfected or removed a worm, trojan horse or virus from computer, there may be error happening whenever users try to open or access the drive by double clicking on the disk drive icon in Explorer or My Computer window to try to enter the drive’s folder. The problem or symptom happens in hard disk drive, portable hard disk drive or USB flash drive, and Windows will prompt a dialog box with the following message:

Windows Script Host

Can not find script file autorun.vbs.

Sometimes you will be asked to debug the VBScript with error code of 800A041F - Unexpected ‘Next’.

or

Choose the program you want to use to open this file with:

In this case, the “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file” option is grayed out.

The symptom occurs because when autorun.vbs is created by trojan horse or virus. The virus normally loads autorun.inf file to root folder of all hard drive or USB drive, and then execute autorun.bat file which contains script to apply and merge autorun.reg into the registry, with possible change to the following registry key to ensure that virus is loaded when system starts:

I've got Windows XP Professional with SP3. About 3 weeks ago my computer started taking a single mouse click as a double click. I've gone into control panel/folder options and made sure it is set up correctly there ("double click to open item")

Any of suggestions??

I've got McAffee virus protection and it is up to date. I ran a full scan and nothing was detected. For Grins and Giggles I did a "CHKDSK /R" but this did not help either.

Thanks,

Can you not tap the touchpad for anything? Do the buttons work? You may need to install drivers for it. Most laptops use Synaptics. If you don't see the drivers on HP's site, you can try generic drivers from http://www.synaptics.com/support/drivers.

Left double-click now produces "Add to Winamp's bookmark list." When i look at the options available for My Computer --> Tools --> Folder Options --> file types -->edit file types --> actions

I find 3 winamp options, find, and Print Directory Listing (this prints on the printer)

There is no Open (which is what I want and what used to work)

This problem started after I installed a new version of Windows Media Player. I don't recall making any changes in file actions, but maybe I did.

Please help me restore the Open action.

TIA.

First, I apologise, but this is a bit lengthy as I am not very familiar with windows (more a mac person), and I'm not sure what level of detail is necessary.

I had some spyware/viruses/malware recently, and they've now all been cleaned up with internet security software, but I still have a lingering problem: when I double-click on a folder, instead of the folder opening, a new window opens and it's a search window, with the destination folder (ie the one I just clicked on) as a value in the parameter "look in:". The only way I can just open a folder is to right-click, and select open.

I have a feeling I may have done this to myself when I was trying to get rid of the spyware (or whatever it was) before I sucked it up and spent half my rent money on a new subscription to Norton...

When I right-click on a folder, the menu reads: "Search (bolded) / Open / Explore" etc. which doesn't seem right.

I tried to fix it by changing some options in Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types. There are two kinds of folder, "File Folder" and "Folder". In the advanced options for "File Folder", the only action it lists is "find"... I'm not sure if this is where the problem is or if this is normal? I tried to add a new action, but it wanted me to select an application to perform the action and I have no idea... In the advanced options for "Folder", it looks to be normal, it lists the actions &... Read more

To use the VBS File: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double-click the vbs file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

hi...

i def got infected with malware

i ran malwarebytes but couldn't get rid of all of it so i just reinstalled a backup image over the top of my XP partition via Acronis...

everything came up ok and i have no remaining symptoms except when i go to my computer and double click on a drive i get the following error message:

Windows cannot find 'RECYCLER\S-7-3-71-100010344-100023393-100011789-9511.com'.
Make sure you type the name correctly... blah blah blah...

i can still access the drives contents via explorer... so it's more of an inconvenience than anything else...
i can also double click successfully on the drive icon that i reinstalled the Acronis image to.. just not the other extended partitions or other drives...

Malwarebytes doesn't find anything on these drives at all... and it's up to date...

please, can anybody assist me ?

thankyou,

Shaun.

A:can't double click on drives - def infected

Try this.Download and Run FlashDisinfectorYou may have a flash drive infection. These worms travel through your portable drives. If they have been connected to other machines, they may now be infected. Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
Note: Some security programs will flag Flash_Disinfector as being some sort of malware, you can safely ignore these warningsThe utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.Reboot your computer when done.Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection.

Hi Computer Maker,Welcome to the Bleeping Computer HijackThis forum. I have two questions.First, are you using an ISP based in Bangladesh? Specifically, Dekko Airnet Ltd. I see in your profile that you are in India. If you are using this Bangladesh ISP then the O17 line in your log is legitimate.Next question. Do you know what this program is, and did you install it deliberately:C:\Program Files\Ananda Computers\Bijoy 2003 Pro\Bijoy.exeThose are the only questionable things I see in this log. If those items are legitimate, your log is clean. Please let me know.Dave

Recently I found that when I double click the Hard drives and / or partitioin, the pop up messge says the acces is denied.
But I can open the drives by right clicking and clicking the open command from the drop down menu. I also observed that there is a new addition in the drop down menu - an Additional Open(O) command, which when clicke gives the access denied message.
Could this be a virus attack. What is remedy to kill this problem.
By formating some of the partitions i could access these drives by double clicking. How to solve the C drives on which the OS- winXP SP2 resides? Reformating and reinstalling is te last resort. Is tere any other work around.

hope some experts can find a solution for this prob.

My symptoms are these:
right click hangs on all files but not folders for about 30-40 seconds then works fine for a few moments but once I click away or do anything else the problem comes back
using the keyboard to copy hangs and then once the computer "unfreezes" copy/paste with keyboard works fine
double clicking on a file that would launch a program hangs for a while then opens the program.
using the delete key hangs
Otherwise performance is normal everything runs fine while using all programs.

What I have tried so far:
Running Adaware and AVG to determine if spyware/malware installed
using shellview to disable processes - no results
cleaned temp files and defragmented drives
uninstalled hp easy button keyboard software

Problem does not occur in safe mode.
