I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I have a 6 year old Dell Studio 1747 laptop with Win 7 ultimate 64bit on.

I know it's old but it's always worked really well until about 10 days ago. What happens is it freezes and stops responding, the mouse and mousepad don't work anymore.
The only thing I can do is switch it off with the button and turn it on again and select "start windows normally". But then after a few minutes the problem starts again. I tried a system restore, it said some files were damaged but it succeeded in repairing them.

But that didn't help.

Is there anything I can try/do, is this fixable or is my laptop just dying?

Thanks for helping me

1. Optical USB mouse won't move the cursor.
2. Mouse buttons function properly
3. Bought a new similar mouse, same problem, ruling out damaged mouse likelihood.

4. Have tried multiple USB slots. Have tried rebooting. Have tried uninstalling the driver and rebooting.
5. Saw somewhere to remove battery but I'm in a hotel and have no screwdriver to do so.

Really need to fix this as my shoulder is becoming inflamed reaching to the mousepad. Help?

Hi there,

My mouse cursor freezes once every ~30s for about 1~2s. It doesn't happen all the time, but I suspect it might happen because of the usage of postgreSQL, as I've seen 2 other people with the same problem who also used it.

I have tested another mouse, the problem persists. I've tried updating mouse/USB drivers as well, nothing helped.

My trackpad, however, doesn't stop working at any time.
Any ideas?

Thanks.

A:Mouse cursor freezing

Interesting how when you tested another mouse the issue persisted, but it works with the trackpad. Are both mice you tried (non-trackpad) wired or wireless?

Lately my HP Pavilion 750n (Windows XP as the OS, 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor and 768 MB RAM) has developed an problem of the mouse cursor freezing. This is accompanied by a click sounding from the tower and the HD light comes on. The computer completely locks up, so I can't determine what is causing this since pressing the CTRL-ALT-DEL keys are inoperative. I have to unplug the power, then re-start to get the mouse working again. I have MSE as the security software. Scans with this show no viruses. Any idea what's going on?

A:Mouse Cursor Freezing

The HP Pavilion 750n desktop is several years old, so it's a good probability the hard drive is failing.
The freezing mouse cursor and clicking sound from inside the tower reinforces that suspicion.

If the hard drive does need replacing and you don't have the original recovery disc kit available to install Windows XP, you can purchase it here.

It seems like every 10-20 seconds, my cursor freezes in one spot for a split second, then it's fine. It's so repetitive, it's a nuisance and I can't finish up work I have to do on the computer. I'm really not sure what it is...switched USB ports three different times (USB laser mouse), so I'm clueless.

Hi.. I have had this problem for about a week now....
I have a sony vaio windows 7 IE 8 Laptop that I love and it is only a year old.
in the past 5 days the cursor on my logitech wireless mouse freezes. The only way to get out of it is ctrl. alt. del and it goes to my home screen and I cancel and the cursor comes back.. sometimes I go for hours and it doesnt
freeze and then sometimes it freezes every 5 minutes. there are times when I ctl. alt delete and it goes to my screen and I have to manually shutdown as even if I touch the pad on my laptop I cannot close it.. and of course when the cursor freezes
the screen freezes too.

Just to let you know that there is nothing wrong with my battery or mouse
as I have another one just like it and it does the same thing

I contacted Sony Vaio and they came in by remote and put in a patch
and said that should do the trick. but it did not...

any ideas....

do you need more info and if so what else would help in this situation.

I also play some games and that is when I most get this. and I have
the flash 102..... the latest version. and my java is uptodate.

I should also say that at times my IE8 says not responding.....

thanx Coco.

p.s.I have a friend who is very computer savy and comes in by remote
to fix things on my computer and this is stumping even him..

Hi Baggy2014,

Have you checked a different mouse on the system to isolate the issue? Also, perform a clean boot on the system to check the same:

Also, check the system under safe mode and let us know if it occurs there as well:

Since the issue I'm having is roughly equivalent to Windows itself hanging, I figured this would be the best place.
What is happening is that Windows freezes and I can't interact with anything on the screen. CTRL-ALT-DEL and CTRL-SHFT-ESC methods to try to bring up the task manager do not work. I am, however, able to move the mouse when this is happening, but cannot interact with anything. The only thing that returns my system to normal is a hard boot . Over a 2 week period, it has happened at an increasing rate, but my system has run completely stable for something like 5-6 years now. I formatted and reinstalled windows in hopes of a fix, but it's still happening.

Hi,
I have windows vista.
A couple of weeks ago someone on here assisted me with my computer. I had search engine redirect, along with other problems.
It was okay for awhile but then all of a sudden it started working very badly now. One thing is norton 360 seemed to disappear from my computer. I got directions and uninstalled norton and then reinstalled it again, now the norton seems to be working okay.
But since then, the mouse cursor has been moving erratically, totally disappearing and freezing up the whole screen. The screen keeps flashing to blank screens or my previous screen for a few seconds and then coming back to the screen I am on. It is having problems restarting alot of times and sometimes I can not even do anything before it freezes. I have started it in safe mode with networking and still seemed to have the same problems. The mouse pointer was still moving erratically and not working well. Just in the time that I have typed this so far the screen has flashed to a previous screen 4 times.
I have run norton scans and I dont think it is finding to much but tracking cookies.
Any other help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Kim

A:computer freezing, mouse cursor disappearing or moving erratically

Hello Kim,,, may be having a hard drive beginning to fail or file corruption. I would recommend immediate backupo of important files in case. Probably not a malware issue. So I 'd run SFC and if you still hae trouble ask this in Vista and they can check your drive and other things. Please run SFC (System File Checker) Please run System File Checker sfc /scannow... For more information on this tool see How To Use Sfc.exe To Repair System FilesNOTE for Vista/WIN 7 users..The command needs to be run from an Elevated Command Prompt.Click Start, type cmd into the Start/Search box,right-click cmd.exe in the list above and select 'Run as Administrator'You will need your operating system CD handy.Open Windows Task Manager....by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESCThen click File.. then New Task(Run)In the box that opens type sfc /scannow ......There is a space between c and /Click OKLet it run and insert the CD when asked.

This is what the even viewer says;

I think I may need update the video drivers but I'm not sure. I've been trying to download them since early this morning but the computer crashes before I can.

I purchased a A485 and worked well but quickly replaced Mech harddrive with SSD. After reinstalling windows 10 I noticed I loss the function of the backlit keyboard, as well as my mouse cursor kept freeze when using the Track point when I would use the middle button for scrolling. all drivers up-to-date and even tried reinstalling windows and drivers again...still have this issue the mouse freezing is the must fustrating since I primarily use the Trackpoint to control my mouse functions. I found that locking (windows + L) and login back in frees up the mouse again...but typically freezes shortly after pretty fustrating, especially when one of the main reasons I buy Lenovo is their trackpoint. I've seen people have similar issues but no resolutions in their threads.

Match the Hosts files with other computers on the network at the same location. Any interesting sites, should be removed from the Hosts file and saved. Your video links that you posted don't work. What other hardware or software differences are there in other machines on the network? Try and match them to one another. To find out what could be causing it.

Hi, newbie here Secondhand DELL Latitude D600 laptop. Freezes with no rhyme or reason. Can be once a day or multiple times an hour. I have to do a hard restart every time because nothing else will work. Cursor will either be frozen or will move but won't respond when I "click". Most of the time right before the laptop freezes, the cursor will disappear and then click around the screen, opening up things like the start menu, the time and the X to close out the internet. I use the touchpad and when it won't respond, sometimes the eraser head looking thing in the keyboard (sorry) will work. Most of the time nothing works. It's almost as if someone is controlling my cursor. I just watch as it disappears and then re-appears somewhere else. My hands are nowhere near the touchpad. It's getting worse as time goes on. I've run my antivirus programs Avira AntiVir (and I just recently deleted AVG as I was purposely running both), Malwarebyte's Anti Malware and Windows Defender and nothing ever comes up. I've followed the directions from the first sticky and I've included everything here. I do realize I should have performed a disk clean up before I did this but I didn't think about it at the time . Up until the past couple of days, I lost internet connections very often (multiple times per hour). I use wireless and my desktop pc has never had an issue like this so I know it's the laptop, not the wireless connection. I would ha... Read more

hey guys....got a problem with my laptop (old school Toshiba PT831C-1104L Tecra S1)

only recently has it begun to act up....the problem is the mouse cursor...it just goes off on it's own....i have no control of it...sometimes the mouse cursor goes to the top left corner, or the bottom right or just to the right or left.....i can try and use the mouse to bring the cursor back, but it goes right back to the corner it was at before.

the funny thing is that if you give it time, it will 'release' and I can once again use the mouse normally.....but this lasts only a few seconds and then the cursor is off doing it's thing again

thsi problem just started out of the blue...i had just come back from a 3wk vacation and within that week, it was going nuts..

i've tried all the USB ports on the unit, as well as three different mice, even tried to upgrade the driver for the mouse.....device manager shows no conflict as well...they all don't make a difference

even as i type this post, the mouse is going nuts!

any ideas?

i'm running XP SP2, and the laptop is just for general use...web surfing and ms office stuff.

I have a Windows 7 mutli touch device and every time i touch the screen i get a stupid mouse graphic. Its really annoying because it has a tendency to get in the way when i am tapping around with my fingers on the screen. I have been unable to find anything
about such a "feature" on the webs. As various combinations including "mouse" and "graphic" and "windows 7" are pretty vanilla search terms.
I am guessing it is some lame "accessability" feature but i have no idea how to fix. please help

A:mouse graphic (not cursor) next to mouse cursor when touching screen

That is called the Touch Pointer, its easy to turn off once you know where to look.
Click Start, type pen in the search box or open control panel aand click Pen and touch.
Click the touch tab and uncheck Show the touch pointer... then just click ok to  close the dialog and the ghostly mouse picture will be gone.

My laptop was working fine until I finished installed the latest itunes and restarted. Windows took that time to install the latest updates as well. I logged back into Windows and noticed my mouse cursor was going nuts like another program kept trying to grab the focus. I have a video of what's going on here. I can't use right click as the focus goes away from the window too fast. I can't use alt+tab because of the same problem.

I checked device manager and there are no errors. There isn't a stuck key as the mouse cursor is fine on the Windows login screen. It doesn't go nuts until I log in.

I uninstalled everything from Apple that updated today and the latest Windows updates that were installed today. Did not help.

Hi! I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro C850.
When I first got the laptop, the cursor would freeze up, I managed to google it, and I found this thread. http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-507154-frozen-cursor-on-toshiba-sattelite-laptop
In the comments it says to go FN + F5, and that worked, kinda, but I had to do it a few times just to get it to work. For about a year, I've been having this problem, and a lot of the time it will freeze up for five minutes at a time and the FN + F5 keys wont work unless I just keep pressing them or mucking around with the keyboard or even try scroll.
As I use my laptop a lot (more than 12 hours a day), it happens a lot, once a day perhaps, and it's getting quite annoying.
I was wondering if there was an actual way to disable it, as it just happens randomly while I am using the mouse. If anyone knows a way to disable it, that'd be nice, thanks!
P.S: If I plug in an external mouse, it does work perfectly and it NEVER freezes up, but I always seem to break my mice, so that is not an option.

1) First make sure that touchpad is not disabled. Try the combination Fn+F9 to

2) Turn OFF your laptop --> Unplug the power cord from the laptop --> Remove

Hi, Try the following. Shutdown the notebook and leave it like this for 10 seconds. Tap away at f11 as soon as you press the power button until you see a 'Windows is loading' message. On the next screen, select your Keyboard Layout and on the following screen, select Troubleshoot. Select 'Advanced Options' and then select System Restore. Click on your Operating System and then wait until the System Restore window opens. Pick a restore point at least 24 hours before the issue first occurred and then proceed with the system restore. Regards, DP-K

I have had a U500v Asus touchscreen for a little over a month now. I haven't used it very much so I am still getting used to Windows 8, but have had no problems till today: I just woke my laptop from hibernation, and the mouse cursor was visible until I entered my password to login. It then disappears.

I have tried rebooting and fully powering off many times, and in both scenarios my mouse cursor is visible and useable to select the box to type in my password, and then it disappears after I hit or click enter to login. It's not just invisible, as I have tried clicking on things when I have positioned my cursor (while still visible) and then tried to select things when it disappears, so the cursor is just completely not there anymore.

I have tried updating drivers on the touchpad, but Windows tells me I have the best drivers already.

I have tried fn+f9 out of desperation, too, to no avail.

Can anyone suggest any other alternatives that might retrieve my mouse cursor?

Many thanks

A:Mouse cursor disappears on Asus laptop after logging in

I'm assuming that this is happening with the use of the touchpad, not with using a mouse.

Install the latest touchpad driver from Asus's web site. If Asus does not offer it then install the latest driver from the touchpad manufacturer's site. Then, if necessary, check the touchpad settings to see if there is some option doing that nasty deed.

Hey Guys,

I've been looking for a sloution to this problem for a long while but couldn't find one anywhere that has worked.

I recently bought myself an HP Pavillion dv6760ea Entertainment Notebook... Specs include things like Vista Home Premium 32-bit, Intel Core 2 Duo T5450 / 1.67 GHz ( Dual-Core ), Ram: 2 GB (installed) / 4 GB (max) - DDR II SDRAM ( 2 x 1 GB ) (Not really sure what specs I need to give here... If others are needed then yous hould be able to simply google the laptop model for them).

So I have this machine which I am pretty pleased with. I whack in my Wacom Volito 2 tablet and install the driver almost as soon as I get it set up and running. This, for some reason, gave me an on-screen keyboard at startup at the Login screen where I type my password. I have recently learnt that this is some behaviour by which Vista thinks that, because of the Wacom Driver, my laptop is infact a Tablet PC?

I started to get this issue where when I logged in and hit my desktop after startup, my cursor would freeze up... sometimes for minutes at a time... but it always took a long time before it actually unfroze and allowed me to do anything.

Months later I got fed up of this and started looking for the problem. After palying around I found that when I uninstalled my tablet's software the whole cursor freezing thing vanished. I seemed that this software was the cause of the problem. This is bad since I need my software in order to use my tablet properly (withou... Read more

A:Wacom Tablet and Vista/Laptop Touchpad causing freezing cursor

Update:

I tried the same driver on another similar laptop. It was also an HP Pavillion of the same sort of series but with slightly different specs.

Exactly the same thing happened as before which means that it is something that these laptops have in common. The most likely cause, I think, is the synaptics touchpad driver conflicting with the Wacom Driver. I have emailed wacom who have emailed back with useless information about reinstalling without firewalls and virus scanners which don't work.

Anyone experiencing similar problems or have any knowledge into this issue?

I have had this issue for some time, now.  Running Windows 8.1.  Bios gets updated regularly and just updated a few weeks ago.  I downloaded and re-installed the touchpad driver just in case.  But, I have this very odd issue that occurs often when I plug in a peripheral (usually my hasp device for embroidery software), or, simply randomly on its own:  My touchpad mouse cursor will go up to the upper left corner of my screen.  It will flicker, and I will also see odd images on my screen like bubbles or circles, and sometimes it appears that the cursor is trying to execute commands.  In order to fix this, I put the laptop to sleep, the re-awaken it, and the mouse behaves, again.  Very annoying and I cannot figure out how to fix this.  I never use an exeternal mouse, so not sure if this behavior would also occur with a mouse, but I am assuming it is the touchpad.  The last driver update for my laptop is dated for 2013, and it is the same driver I already had installed, but I did re-install it, in case somehow the install was corrupted.  Any ideas what is causing this, and how to fix it?

Hi @hoosierquilt  I understand that your touchpad is behaving intermittently behaving erractically, normally when you plug in a USB peripheral. I am happy to help with this. Firstly, please post the full product number of your notebook. See the following, if you need help in finding that. How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?I take it that you are referring to an external software security key (hasp), that you need to use, when this normally happens. What other devices do you use that also cause this to happen? Do you notice any other performance issues, slowness, lack of response, system freezes? From how you wrote your initial comment, I would assume that this did not always happen. Do you recall any specific change that may have been made to your system when it first started to occur? Some new software installed, or some update, change to the operating system, or some new hardware added to the system? How often does this problem occur when you do not plug in a USB device? It sounds like it happens as well, but does it take significantly longer to occur, or is it very rare to occur at all without a usb connection added? You mentioned updating the BIOS frequently, have you also updated the chipset driver, and others as well? For most HP notebook systems the usb controllers are a part of the chipset driver. For now take a look through this and see if anything helps.Using and Troubleshooting the TouchPad or ClickPad (Windows 8)   ... Hi.I hope everyone reading this is having a better start to their day than me. My Toshiba laptop (satellite L850-166) has stopped working and i know nothing about computers. After an hour looking on the net for a solution i am even more confused, so any help offered will have to be in noob language please.
So here goes.
I was watching a youtube video and my computer froze.

I left it for a bit to see if it would sort itself but it didnt.

I tried to start the task manager but that wouldnt open.

I then held the power button down and shut the computer down.

When i restarted the computer it showed the Toshiba screen (as usual) giving me the F2 and F12 options for setup and boot menu.

It then went to a screen saying windows was loading files (not seen this screen before) the progress bar underneath the message then filled up.

After about 30 seconds a new screen showed with a coloured progress bar with  microsoft corporation  written underneath. This bar only filled to a quarter then the screen went black. There is a mouse cursor on the screen that i have control of.

I have left it for half an hour and nothing changes. I have also tried to start the computer a few times but its the same every time.

If anyone knows what my problem is or can offer advice on it i would be most grateful. We have some family photos on the computer and i need to get them
Also Minecraft is calling and all my saves are on the computer.

Hi, can you get it to boot into safe mode?
To do so, from start up keep tapping the F8 key, that should give you the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the up and down keys to highlight Safe mode, or safe mode with networking, then press the Enter key. If it boots into safe mode, or not, let us know, whoever comes next will help further.

I left it sitting over night still never fully booted up. I've followed all of the HP troubleshooting steps. I've removed battery held down power button plugged ac adapter in turned back on and nothing. I've reseated the memory sticks. I've ran the startup fix and says it can't repair problems. I also ran sfc /scannow in cmd prompt and it fixed some errors. I would factory restore the computer but I don't have the reset dvds nor does the person that owns the laptop. Is this a driver issue ?

Hi,

I have a 4 year old Windows 7 laptop which has suddenly started playing up. Last night, I received a runtime error, which when I clicked OK shut down Explorer and removed the start bar from my screen. I was unable to get it back or to make my laptop restart via ctrl+alt+delete. When I forced a restart by removing the battery, I ended up with a black screen with a movable mouse cursor. The same happened when I tried to boot into safe mode, but with the standard 'Safe Mode' text in each screen corner, and Microsoft ® Windows ® (Build 7601: Service Pack 1) at the top edge of the screen.

Can anyone provide any help to revive my ailing laptop?

Thanks,

Steve

A:Laptop won't boot properly, persistent black screen with movable mouse cursor

An update on the situation as it's been a day.

I can't bring up standard desktop in safe mode, or by holding F8 and selecting the low resolution option. Weirdly, I can activate sticky keys, and can see the standard windows sticky keys dialogue box which pops up when you hit shift 5 times in a row.

There are plenty of 'try this' suggestions when I google the issue, but I'm holding off on trying anything at the moment, as I'm hoping the experts here will be awesome.

Cheers!

Hi, I have purchased a brand new t480S a few weeks ago. During the installation first the touchscreen became unresponsive , after like 3-4 hours.  A few hours later the mouse cursor started to act really strange - it is going up or down on its own. Further it is accelerating, so even if you try to compensate with the mouse / trackpoint / touchpad you can do it for 1-2 secs, after it inevitably 'wins' and runs out from the screen. The problem occurs every time you use over cca 50% of the laptop's capacity, basically after it heats up. The laptop is unusable in its present form, after 8 hours of usage.. Before you ask, yes, I did send it to the 'support'.. The support.. Well, if I would tell you how and what they did I think I would be banned from these forums forever. Let's just say I have little hope that they will solve my issue I just hope that they will give back my laptop without further damages. (Last time I tried to get it back I was told that it is disassembled and waiting for some spare parts - yet they could not tell me which spare parts..) Anyone had any similar issues? Mouse cursor running wild when the computer heats up? Same time touchsreen dying? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks,Denes

Hi pavelmilwaukee,

My name is Tapan. I am from Dell Social Media Team.

I would suggest you to please run a test on the hard drive of your system and check if the hardware of the system is fine or not. In case none of the resorts are working its either a hard drive failure or OS being corrupt beyond repair, you can run the hardware tests using following steps

1. Please push and hold the power button for 10 seconds to confirm the system is completely powered off.
2. Then, press and hold the <Fn> key, and then press the power button to power the system on.
3. Now, release both buttons. The Pre-Boot System Assessment screen appears and the PSA diagnostic test begins.
4. Document any error codes displayed by PSA diagnostics. After the error tones, or completion of the PSA diagnostic test, the Dell 32-bit Diagnostic screen appears.
Let me know of the findings. Glad to be of assistance.
