Dell 7737 BIOS v14 has a keyboard bug where random keyboard keys stop working till the AC is disconnected and the battery removed or drained.

Q: Dell 7737 BIOS v14 has a keyboard bug where random keyboard keys stop working till the AC is disconnected and the battery removed or drained.

I have a Dell 7737 laptop and from time to time it develops a firmware glitch where random keys stop working for both BIOS Setup and Operating Systems. After such thing happens neither shutdown (Full shutdown / Fast Boot disabled) nor restart get the keyboard back to a normal state. At this point the only workarround is to disconnect the AC power cord and then either drain the battery or physically remove it.
This laptop's battery cover is not designed for daily removal and it is starting to get loose because of this BIOS bug.
I am running BIOS version A14 but this bug was present since I purchased the laptop with BIOS version A07. Sometimes I cannot even type my password because the random keys that stop working match those it uses.
Please Dell could you provide a BIOS hotfix for this annoying issue?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a user whose Tab key stopped working, but only on its own. That is to say, Ctrl-Tab, Shift-Tab, and Alt-Tab all still work. After swapping with a known-good keyboard, Ctrl doesn't work, and escape opens the start menu (which would indicate that ctrl is stuck down). After a second keyboard swap, with a keyboard that is known-good, tested, and absoutely pristine, he reports that the F key and Ctrl key sometimes do not work, along with a couple other keys.

No accessibility options are active, and the BIOS on all machines in this office are identical. What could possibly be going on here, and what can I do about it?

Are you receiving any errors in Device Manager?

To get to device manager, do the following:
Start->Control Panel->Performance and Maintenance->System->Hardware Tab->Device Manager

Or

Type the following into the run dialog box (Located at: Start->Run)
devmgmt.msc

Let me know if there are any discrepancies.

Hi guys, Something really strange started happening two days ago. Out of the blue the following keys stopped working: GHBackspaceWindows [email protected]' The laptop is a couple of years old and a bit dusty, so I took it to the local shop to get the keyboard replaced and cleaned. Seemed to be working fine when I left the shop. Then, a little while ago the space key and P stopped. Five minutes later they started working again but ctrl stopped and N is temperamental. I haven't spilt anything on it or knocked it. Any ideas what's going on?

For about 2 - 3 weeks now, some keys on my Lenovo Z50-70 laptop have stopped working. At first my left arrow, right arrow and home button would not work until I would press them multiple times and they would all simultaneously start working. They now don't work at all anymore no matter what I try.  This is now starting to happen with the letter "E" on my keyboard and it frustrates me a lot. Here are some of the things I have done to try and solve:

- connected an external keyboard (which works perfectly fine) - but I cannot use this at places such as university or work.
- attempted to update keyboard drivers and reinstall them (did not work).
- Ran virus scans with avira and malwarebytes. Malwarebytes found 200 PUPs - quarantining these fixed nothing.
- Tried using the keys (arrow keys) in BIOS - they still did not work
- Checked to see if I could update the BIOS - had the latest version.

Any help would be massively appreciated, I really want to get this fixed.

Hi guys,

I am experiencing an annoying issue with Windows 10 and my Cherry keyboard (Cherry eVolution Stream Multimedia Keyboard G85-23000), especially with the multimedia keys.

Upon a boot / reboot all the multimedia keys are working without issues: mute, volume up/down, etc.
However sometimes it stops working completely (completely random). I have no idea what is causing it or how to solve it.

When they stop working I cannot get them back working at all anymore, other then rebooting my PC. Obviously this is not a solution, because I have to close everything I was working on.

While typing this, I tried to unplug and plug back in the keyboard. Apparently that solves it also. Though this is not a good solution, because the backside of my PC is not easily reached.

Cherry keyboard don't have drivers available, so that's not a solution. Also removing the HID keyboard thing from hardware devices and reinstall / refresh doesn't provide a solution.

Anyone else experiencing this? Or has a solution for this problem? Would be great, because I am very used to using the multimedia keys (especially the volume keys).

I am using the Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview version. Version 1511 (build 14257.1000).
Maybe it's an issue with the insider version, or something else. Or my hardware combination... I have no clue...

Thanks in advance.

A:Multimedia keys on keyboard stop working suddenly...

Well I still haven't resolved it. As a matter of fact; it's become worse.
As soon as I hit my volume keys (or a few times) they will get "stuck".

The only solution is a reboot or re-plugging my USB keyboard.

Since a few weeks, the keys I and K sometimes randomly stop working. I first noticed it four weeks ago. At first I only had this problem when entering my password (I have Windows 8.1), I would try to enter my password and then notice that my "I" didn't want to work anymore. Pressing the button for a long time made it work again. When my laptop was fully booted I wouldn't notice any problem with the keys, not even a little. But slowly over time, there was no way I could make my I work when I was entering my password and then I also noticed my K didn't want to work either. It started happening randomly when I was on the internet or writing on Wordpad: my I and K would stop working. First after a bit of pressing on both keys at the same time it started working and so I ignored it, but now sometimes i'm waiting and pressing the buttons for ten minutes long before they work properly again. For 3 minutes they work, only to stop working right afterwards again. ^, *, -, and . stop working too, but those are only minor problems. I can work without punctuation, but I can't work without my K and I. I don't think there's a problem with the keys itself, I assume if it's something with the actual keyboard then my K and I would stop working seperately at different times, and not all together at the same time? They don't feel stiff either, and I also never eat at my laptop so it's definitely not bread crumbs or anything under them if there is. I  tried something that I re... Read more

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

If you have a USB keyboard available can you try that and see if the problem continues ?

I suspect that the USB will work without problems,  That the problem you are having is with the keyboard itself.  Since the problem is random, but slowly getting worse and centers around the K and L keys could be a good indication of a keyboard defect.   Is your system still under warranty ?

I have a Logitech K200 keyboard. It's been quite a few years since I have been using it.

It had been working fine till a few days ago. Now random keys aren't working. Like F2, N, Alt, left & right arrow keys.

Particular problem is with the N key, for which I have to use the onscreen keyboard & it's quite annoying.

Sometimes, the keys work all of a sudden. Like, for the past 2-3 days, the keys started working. Since yesterday afternoon, they again stopped working :/.

What could be the cause? I uninstalled & reinstalled the drivers too.

Should I just buy a new keyboard?

For the 4th time, the T540 keyboard has about 7 of its keys stop working. The seven keys are usually on the right hand side and in a group, but could be in any row, and within 1 or 2 columns of each other. Pressing the key does nothing, not even the click in click mode. I am convinced this is not a software problem as I have tried all possible software remedies. I am sure it is due to the keyboard or connection itself. The Shift or Ctrl does not work for these keys either. First time this happened after a year of use, I lost 'P' and '0' among others, and I had to replace the keyboard. A year later on the new keyboard it happened again, but came back after two days. 3rd time was four months later, and I have lost '-', '=', '5', '6', delete, and others. I remapped these. Then again now I lost another bunch including '\', backspace, enter, and others. The original keyboard is a backlit keyboard FRU 04Y2387, ID# 48L16M, Parts # 0C44952, Model # KM BL-105US . Replacement keyboard also backlit and exact replacement. Short of replacing the keyboard, or resetting the keyboard connection and cleaning the contacts, (all tried) what is there to do? Is this a contact problem or keyboard problem? Has happened with two different keyboards. Is this a common problem? Any help will be of great assistance and will be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I purchased Cooler Master's Devastator gaming gear combo off amazon and received it yesterday. Randomly today the ASDF and JKL; keys (oddly enough the keys you were taught to put your fingers on in elementary school) stopped working. However, they sometimes do work, but then stop again... It does not seem to be a keyboard command or anything like that, the device is getting enough power for the backlight to work, this still occurs with the backlight off, I have restarted my PC, tried different Usb drives and deducted that it was just that keyboard(the one I'm using now is fine) and finally, there is nothing inside those keys.
I feel the problem must lie within the software of the keyboard as there looks like there is nothing wrong with it physically.
I have been googling this all day and have fund nothing even close to the problem I am having.
It would be a huge hassle try and get a refund and I was very happy with the product before this problem occurred. Any suggestions would be helpful.

A:Devastator Keyboard ASDF and JKL; keys randomly stop working

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 with Windows 7 and a majority of the top keys on the keyboard aren't working; more specifically the Q-R, and the U-P keys. I've had the computer for about 2 years now. I've had a previous keyboard issue in the past where I would type a the "I" key and it would type both the "I" and "O," but this was usually fixed by just restarting my computer.
I've tried the keyboard troubleshooting procedure, but that didn't solve anything. I'm considering buying a new keyboard for my laptop but I don't want to waste the money if it is an issue with wiring and not the keyboard itself. Does anybody have any clue on how to fix or test my issue?

This does is not isolated to my computer, the display computer at Best Buy also had this issue. This is a big problem because I need those keys in order to test my programs. I have looked in many places some say it is a problem with the bios other say with the drives and others say with the hardware.
I have already tried calling technical support and they could not do anything about it. As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

Not completely random. I hope I'm able to finish this before the keyboard stops working.

It starting happening a few weeks ago. I bought a new mouse, but that started freezing up as well. I haven't had any problems yet, since I plugged it into one of the front USB ports. But, I won't be surprised if it happens again.

The times my mouse has stopped working have been after I click the administrator account icon when I sign into windows 7. Once when I double clicked to open firefox, and other times it just plain stops working for no apparent reason. Tonight, while I was using my keyboard to type. I typed an e, and noticed it made about 7 duplicates of that letter before the keyboard stopping working. The other time a few minutes ago it just stopped for no reason.

I see in device manager, I have only HID compliant mouse and HID keyboard device under keyboards and mice and other pointing devices.

However, there are a lot of duplicate entries under the USB controller tab. There are some under the Human Interface Devices tab as well.

I had a problem with my laptop which is certain key on my keyboard is not functioning. The weird is, it happened without a reason. because after I shutdown doing my work when I turn it on again, I discovered my "s", "d", "g", "h", "\", "m", " left shift", "caps lock" and "~" key did not work at all. I try taking the key off, cleaning underneath, but nothing seems to be working. After that I try to use usb keyboard and it seems the key can be entered. So I thought my hardware is the problem. than I replace into the new one, but still having the same problem. I already waste my money buying new keyboard. Does any one happen to know what sort of problem this is and how I would go about fixing it? Is it related to the registry. My laptop is Acer aspire 4740G, ram 4GB, processor i3 2.4GHz. Hi there,

I uninstalled Intel Smart Connect Technology after experiencing a BSOD that seemed to be caused by a related driver. When the uninstallation tool asked if I wanted to restart now/later, I chose to restart now, which was followed by another BSOD.

Now I can boot into Windows just fine but neither my mouse or my keyboard are working. They work in the BIOS but as soon as Windows is loaded, they stop functioning. I've tried resetting my CMOS but this did not solve the problem. I've also checked that they are enabled in the BIOS.

I would try a system restore but Windows 8 doesn't seem to allow me to boot into repair mode without actually going into Windows first, but I can't do it from Windows because of my malfunctioning peripherals.

I can't use the Windows 8 installation disc to repair because as soon as the message that says "Press any key to continue" comes up, my keyboard stops working. However, it seems I can force the PC to boot from the CD which after a bit of a wait gets me to the Windows installation screen, with my only option being to completely reinstall Windows.

I'd like to avoid that if possible. Does anyone have alternate solutions?

Edit: Obviously I cannot post the minidump files so I'm sorry for not following the posting rules to the letter :S
Edit2: I am able to enter Windows Repair Mode with the Installation disc, but there is no option for Safe Mode and when I attempt to System Restore, I get this error message: "To use System Res... Read more

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

Try starting the system and then shutting it down by using the power button to turn it off.
Try it 3 times and see if that will allow you to get into the repair options.at

What happens when you reboot and look for the option to select an operating systems?

Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

So far I've tried the ol' method of taking out the battery for a minute. I've had the keyboard off and examined the ribbon; no unusual kinks or damage are visible. I also kept pressing the afflicted keys while moving the ribbon in the hope that it was a kink. No joy there.

Before I relent and buy a new board (they're cheap enough, but if I can save money this close to Christmas then everyone's a winner!) does anyone have any clues or experience with this kind of issue?

Having an issue with all Dell 7510's and associated docks we've deployed to new users at my employer. The external keyboard won't work at the Bitlocker prompt. These PC's are imaged for Win10.
I've sifted through the BIOS settings and have had no luck getting it to work. One thread I found said to make sure the Post Behavior -> Fast Boot setting is set to Thorough. Verified that is the case.
Note: if I undock and dock the PC the external keyboard will work that 1st time at the bitlocker prompt, but at next reboot it doesn't work.

I just recently purchased an HP Envy m6-1205dx laptop and i noticed that certain keys wont work on the keyboard. None of these particular keys work in Windows or on the BIOS screen. I am on my second replacement keyboard and i am having the same issue. The main keys that dont work are the "asdf" and "jkl:" Also, the main enter key does not work. The one on the number pad does. Considering i have trie multiple keyboard with the same result, i would have to assume it is something else entirely. Please help, this is driving me crazy.

Hey @trang1,  Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I understand that you are having an issue with some of the keys on your Notebook. You had mentioned that you already tried all of my troubleshooting steps.  What happens with an external Keyboard? What happens with Safe Mode? What happens with Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset? What happens with a hardware test? What happens when you tried updating all of your drivers?  Please try the follow troubleshooting steps to see if this resolves the situation:  StartSearch for Device ManagerOpen Device Manager from the Search results.Click ViewShow Hidden Devices.Click the arrow next to Keyboards.Right-click the keyboard device name.Select Uninstall.Continue removing device names in the Keyboards category until all device names have been uninstalled.Restart the notebook twice. Please note that the keyboard will automatically repopulate after the restarts. I found a troubleshooting document for you to try also called Notebook Keyboard Troubleshooting. Hi,
After some time...like 3 years, my [Dell model RT7D40] Wireless keyboard ''quick keys/volume control'' became inoperative. Now this is on both of my drives and ''same pc'' that have Win XP Home SP3 on them AND same version numbers on the op. sytsems disks as well.

So I ruled out the software. I don't know if my issue has anything to do with any Windows Updates either. Other than this, my keyboard and mouse work fine. I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers from my Dell Resource CD and selected the [NMB Wireless Mozart Drivers] as I always did in the past [and was instructed to do so by Dell] when reinstalling Windows or just the keyboard itself. I found I really don't have to use the drivers off my resource cd. My kb should be fine with regular windows drivers. Furthermore, I called Dell and they have no clue as of how to fix the problem and I've searched a long time on the net and found nothing on how to fix this issue; just many people with the same problem, weather it was home users or the business end. Now,supposedly Logitech makes or made this kb for Dell. Can't find anything on Logitech's site on this kb model either. Dell claims my kb is 3rd party and won't support it-yeah, right! I'm running into a wall like many others and to go and purchase another kb will not solve this problem. Dell simply doe's not keep their library updated with kb drivers either. I also found nothing on Microsoft's... Read more

Had the same problem on XP with my Microsoft wireless keyboard. This may also work for you. Go to service. ( control panel, administrative tools, services) and make sure the HID Input Services is set to Automatic. Start the service. I notice that when I start my computer and press on the volume keys it takes about 15 or so seconds to load, but it will load.

Hi,
I recently purchased dell xps 9560 two days back and found some weird behaviour with keyboard. At first the @ and # key was not working. Since my microsoft account password was having one of these characters, I had to reset the password before setup itself. But after the restart, it started working. The @ key problem surfaced once again, but immediately restarted and it started working. But now I'm having problems with ` and " characters. As Im typing this, on the first press both characters didnt appear, but on second press I got 2 of them, i went back and removed one of them. Is this a hardware or driver issue? Kindly refer me to the latest keyboard drivers

A:dell xps 9560 keyboard some keys need to be pressed twice

It's a keyboard problem - if still inside the first 30 days from the invoice date, ask Dell to exchange the system for a working one.

If this is the laptop in your specs, your options are: get it replaced or a USB external keyboard (perhaps one of those rollable rubber keyboards).

my laptop hp pavilion g4, some keyboard keys are working. Earlier they worked but they are not working. no physical damage has been done to them.
those keys are f12(wifi), insert, prt sc, delete, =.
Onscreen keyboard keys are working but not the physical keys. I cant even switch on my wifi adapter on, but once in some application the insert key worked. i tried again and it worked, but not all and not in windows home screen. that means they are not damaged internally also.
what could be the possible solution for this?

I have an unusual issue that I know others have had as well.  MySHIFT, Z, X, C, V, M, SPACE BAR, and COMMA keys do not work.  I've tried everything short of replacing the motherboard. I upgraded to the most recent BIOS (F.46).  Took the battery out and held down the power button for over a minute.  Plugged the AC adapter in as the computer first boots, performed a Factory Reset, replaced the Hard Drive.  Uninstalled and re-installed keyboard drivers.  I even replaced the keyboard with a new one only to have the same exact keys not work.  This seems to me as if it's a Firmware issue or a faulty motherboard that we the consumer shouldn't have to pay for to fix.  HP should have some sort of recall or something as I've read numerous posts of this same issue. Has anyone found a fix for this or had any luck with HP Support when their laptop is no longer under warranty?
