Avast’s HTTPS Scanning interferes with Firefox and other programs

Q: Avast’s HTTPS Scanning interferes with Firefox and other programs

Source--------- http://www.ghacks.net/2014/10/31/avasts-https-scanning-interferes-with-firefox-and-other-programs/
Avast released its 2015 lineup recently and one of the new features that all of its antivirus programs ship with is HTTPS Scanning.

It enables the program to detect and decrypt protected traffic using its web filtering component. This alone is highly problematic considering that the program is tapping right into protected data streams but the current implementation is causing all kinds of issues on top of that.

Firefox users for example may notice that the browser won't close anymore because of Avast's HTTPS Scanning feature. This may not happen all the time when Firefox is closed but users reported that it is happening frequently.

That's however not the only issue that Firefox users may experience if Avast is installed on the computer system the browser is running on.

Firefox's add-on update check may be blocked by the security software as well.

The Mozilla Firefox web browser is not the only program that is affected by issues though. Spotify's Web Player may not be able to connect to Spotify for example with Avast 2015 running on the system.

Preferred Solution: Avast’s HTTPS Scanning interferes with Firefox and other programs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Avast’s HTTPS Scanning interferes with Firefox and other programs

That is OK with me as i do not like Avast anyway.

Internet users with basic security knowledge are aware that they should look for the padlock icon in the address bar or the HTTPS in a web address to indicate that a website is secure. We have gotten used to seeing it on bank sites or shopping carts where we input our credit card information. More and more, regular websites are making the switch from unencrypted HTTP to encrypted HTTPS. Last year, search giant Google sweetened the pot by adding HTTPS to their ranking algorithm. That action encouraged webmasters everywhere to make the switch to HTTPS.

But is HTTPS really more secure than HTTP?
The simple answer is not always. As more and more online services are moving to HTTPS, attacks are increasing. An encrypted connection ensures that the connection cannot be modified by anyone else, but it does not guarantee that the actual content being downloaded is safe. Just as with plain HTTP, if a legitimate website is hacked, malware scripts and binaries can be placed into the HTTPS page that appears to be safe.

That?s why it is imperative for security software to check this attack vector. To address this, Avast?s trusted Web Shield technology scans HTTPS sites for malware and threats.

How Avast?s HTTPS scanning feature works (the short version)
Avast is able to detect and decrypt TLS/SSL protected traffic in our Web-content filtering component. To detect malware and threats on HTTPS sites, Avast must remove the SSL certificate and add its self-generated certificate. Our c... Read more

Thanks for this, very helpful. That may be the one thing I still like about Avast, is its web protection. In my experience, it's very reliable.

I keep my taskbar at the top of the screen. I just like it there for ease of use. I'm not trying to make windows look or act like a mac (they annoy me with a lot of their button positions and whatnot)... I just like it up there on the top of my screen.

However, a lot of applications start out up at the very top of the screen. In XP, they started out in the middle of the screen, but in 7... well they are all the way at the top. And my taskbar is covering the menus and title bar, thus not allowing me to grab and move them.

Any of these which are resizable by grabbing a side or bottom edge, I just click there and windows will pop it down to just below the task bar. But several aren't, and I can't move the window in any way, shape, or form. If I know the menu layout, I can use alt keys to duplicate most functions... but some don't have alt key equivalents, or I just don't know them.

Is there any way, short of moving my task bar, or making it auto hide (which I do NOT want to do), to prevent this from happening, or even just reliably fix it each time it does happen?

A:Taskbar at top of screen interferes with some programs

Hi and welcome to the forum .

To move a Window without using the mouse please select the program in the task bar and hit alt+space then M.

Now use the arrow keys to move the Window to an appropriate position.

Hopefully next time that Window opens it will open where you moved it too.

NPF 2002 has blocked lots of trojan attacks on my computer, but I have a problem and I dont know if its in the configuration or just a quirk of the program.

With Firewall turned on, My Outlook 2000 downloads new mail messages slowly. I have several email accounts. If I turn off Personal firewall and click "send/receive" it zips thru the accounts. With firewall on, it spends forever on each one even if there are no new messages. Also, when I go to FTP onto a site it will also spend a lot of time authenticating.

How should I configure it to allow faster access to email & FTP?

A:Norton Firewall Interferes With Some Programs

Of course, this is happening because it is screening for viruses.

I'm moving this to security issues.

Hello. I posted this in the Avast forum, but I know some of you are gurus in here too so? Just today I started getting "Your Connection Is Not Private attackers might be trying to steal your information when opening Chrome to my homepage Start.me or going to a few different "reputable" websites. Not Secure is in the search field to the left of the URL address. When I remove the check mark from enable HTTPS scanning under Web Shield everything works fine again. At first I thought it may be Zemana AntiLogger, so I shut it down and wasn't running it in real time. Maybe a recent update? I think there was a problem like this a few years ago with Avast HTTPS scanning and Firefox, but it was corrected after an update. Just curious if anyone else has had this happen? I don't like leaving it unchecked. It works OK with the Edge browser, but I don't have Firefox installed. I also disabled the Avast Online Security extension, but it didn't help. Thanks.

Hello everyone. Thanks for your access to this thread.
Today, I want to ask you about HTTPS Scanning feature provided by anti-malware solutions for consumer.

For example, Bitdefender Internet Security 2018 has a feature which was named "HTTPS Scanning" for scanning malware incoming through HTTPS (SSL) traffic of browsers.
I am using Bitdefender on one of the my PC and this feature is working correctly on my PC now.

By the way, when I turn on this feature, the SSL certificates of each websites are replaced with a fake certificate provided by Bitdefender.
This is not good for me to confirm correctness of the website.
Especially, the websites, which are having EV-SSL including corporate name are not able to be confirmed by me.

But some anti-malware solutions (e.g. Avast Free, F-secure, and more) are providing HTTPS Scanning feature without replacing with the fake certificates by them.
These solutions are not preventing original certificates like EV-SSL.
It is very good for me to confirm the web site.

AV-Comparatives's Real-World Test is judging some security solutions on default configure of them.
And, "HTTPS Scanning" feature of Bitdefender is enabled as default setting.

Question 1:
Should I turn on "HTTPS Scanning" provided by anti-malware solutions for consumer PC?
In these days, many websites (... even dangerous and fraud websites) are preparing HTTPS (SSL) connection for access users.
If the user disable HTTPS Scanning feature, will m... Read more

Hi guys and gals,

New to this forum, so I hope it the right place for and way of explaining this problem.

I just bought my first PC, which is pretty awesome after having worked on laptops for years.
Here is the configuration:
- i7 4790K
- MSI Z97 Gaming 5
- MSI GTX 980
- Corsair Vengeance Pro Red 16GB 1600 MHz CL9
- Corsair RM750
- Samsung 850 Pro 256GB SSD

This is also my first system with Windows 8.

Now here is the problem:
After installing my favorite browser Firefox, for some reason it won't load google.com properly.
It automatically tries to load the https version of google, which makes sense.
But it gives my the "Untrusted connection error" (but then in Dutch, so I hope it is correctly translated).
When I delete the "s" and try http it loads fine, but then my search results are different from my laptop with Windows 7 and only the categories "Web" and "Images" are shown.
The same happens in Internet Explorer.

I have tried the solutions as described on the Mozilla support pages, but without any luck.

I hope someone on this forum can help me out.

Thanks in advance and best regards,

A:google.com not loading with https, Firefox and IE

A:What are some really good scanning programs

You'll find there's no single best answer to this.  A recent issue of Consumer Reports (I think it was the June issue) had a list of them, but every ranking I've ever seen is different.  As I'm sure others will chime in and say, the answer is very subjective.  It's like what's the best car.  I use the Norton Security Suite which I get free from Comcast on my Windows 7 computers, but I've used the free AVG and Avast as well.  On my Windows 8.1 computers, I just use Defender which in Windows 8 has MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) integrated into it.  Whenever you mention Norton or McAfee, you usually get a whole lot of varied answers because they've been around since the 80s, and most everybody has an opinion on them; some love them, some hate them.  The county I live in uses the commercial Norton product, Symantec Environmental Protection (SEP).  YMMV.
Good luck.

I've had a strange issue that may have been caused by upgrading to Noscript 5.1.6. I closed my Firefox earlier today and shortly afterwards re-opened it, with the notification that Noscript had updated. However I found that many other websites had become inaccessible. Paypal.com brought up a screen with a message like "found, return to gb/home", www.bbc.co.uk gave a "301 moved permanently" message, and many other websites only opened as blank pages. Closing and re-opening the browser several times did not fix the problem. My first suspicion was that Noscript's update had caused an issue, so I disabled it, which fixed the issue immediately. After re-enabling it there was still no problem.
In retrospect the URLs I was using were missing the "HTTPS" prefix that is automatically added (my link to "www.bbc.co.uk" ordinarily sends me to "https://www.bbc.co.uk/", "paypal.com" to "https://www.paypal.com/gb/home", etc), which makes me wonder if there was an issue with redirects.
Oddly, one website that loaded fine when all others I tried failed - https://www.redlettermedia.com/ - now returns a "Secure Connection Failed" message - "SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length." Notably, this also happens when I try and access it on my phone, outside of my home network.
I've run a scan with MBAM for good measure, which turned up nothing. The problem appears to be fixed apart from that one website; can anyone shed some light as to what may have happene... Read more

Where's NoScript for Firefox 57 "Quantum"?

2017-11-14: We're working hard to make NoScript for Quantum available to you as soon as possible, definitely by the end of this week.
Please be patient: if you feel naked while you're waiting for the "brand new" NoScript, you can still use the "regular" NoScript 5.x (and all the other extensions of yours) on Firefox 52 ESR, which will receive security updates until June 2018. See you soon!
EDIT: Redlettermedia is not a secure site. I just went to it with no problem using Firefox 56 and NoScript enabled. I'm not
updating to 57 until NoScript is compatible. I did look at the scripting being blocked and didn't see anything malicious on
the redlettermedia.com home page.
My NoScript was updated 10 days ago to 5.1.5....you may be allowing their not ready for prime time beta releases.

Hey guys,

I am at a friends house checking his PC and during scanning with AVAST got shut down, upon reboot I was given the "windows has recovered from..." and another dmp file created.

While running the dm collector I notice his first dmp was on 09/16 and the latest was 09/23 (today). While checking it out he did download an antivirus program called MyAntivirus which I think is causing his issues. I did uninstall it and removed from start up but am thin king something is still there inside and causing the BSOD.

There are some other issues but not sure if goes with bsod, when trying to click on folders, apps, etc I have to click several time before it is accepted.

I am going to try and see if I can rescan again with AVAST, I tried malwarebytes but he had another one already installed go past the trial so cant use it.

Hi guys,

I recently went to restart my computer. I did, but during the reboot, after the loading windows screen, the screen turned black. It usually does on a boot, but now it is staying black, and not proceeding to the login screen.

I booted into safe mode. I ran AdAware, which seemed to be picking up a few things, but the screen turns black in the middle of the scan. I tried multiple times. This is also the same with Norton AV. I should also note that the computer was working fine before the reboot.

I'm in safe mode with networking now, and here is my HJT:

Hi all;

I have an odd issue with Firefox & Windows 10, with accessing HTTPS websites.
The sites are very very slow to load and others do not complete the load cycle.
I've had this issue for months now.

Just tried the newly released Firefox v50 ... same issues.
Also use Portable-Firefox:
-On the Windows 10 pc = https sites load very slow.
-If I move to my other PC (using Vista), all sites load fine. Without any changes to my Portable-Firefox setup.

When I use Microsoft's Edge browser all sites load fine.

There seems to be a conflict between the Toshiba Laptop, Windows 10 & Firefox in loading HTTPS websites very slowly.

This is what I have tried so far in relation to Windows 10:

-Changed Proxy settings (within Firefox) to each setting
-Flushed DNS cache
-Checked HOSTS file for any entries to those websites
-Removed entries from Windows Firewall
-Disabled Firewall and Anti-Virus
-Checked for Malware,Spyware,etc,etc
-Booted into Windows 10 SafeMode-Network Enabled
My head is getting sore now. Any suggestions

As I mentioned my Portable-Firefox installation works fine on other pcs, including Windows 10 versions, but not on this system (Toshiba laptop & Windows 10). Though MS Edge browser works perfectly fine.
Some of the https sites:

It was fine at first, but when you download large files, that virus scanner can go on for a while, and sometimes causes the browser to crash outright.

Does anyone know how to turn the stinking virus scanning off?

A:How do I get Firefox to stop virus scanning my downloads?

You need to enter this: about:config into your browser. Then scroll down till you see browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone. This should be set to true. If you double click on it, then it will change to false, then you won't have the problem anymore.

Hello! My issue is very similar to this one: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/248235/hijackthis-and-mbam-disappear-when-scanning/However I am unable to resolve the problem in the same manner.I scanned with AVG, Spybot, and SuperAntispyware from within a PE environment. I then booted the computer into Windows (this computer has Vista SP1) and installed MBAM. It installed and updated but ran for just a few seconds before it closed. I tried to run it again but I was met with an error that said "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." If I uninstall then reinstall, I can run it again for a few seconds with the same result. This is also true of HiJack This, RootReveal, and others I have tried. The original issue with the computer was that it wouldn't run exe files. A DOS box would pop up with a message "Program too big to fit in memory" for a split second. This issue was solved with the above mentioned scans and a registry fix to correct exe file associations.I have a DDS log, but I cannot run RootReveal to get a log from it. It fails on the "Files" section as MBAM does above. Here's my DDS log:DDS (Ver_09-07-30.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Owner at 13:59:57.77 on Tue 08/18/2009Internet Explorer: 7.0.6001.18000Microsoft? Windows 8.1 Toshiba Satellite.  Running Firefox v.42.0.  About a week ago, I started getting this pop-up randomly (not the same websites) about once a day now.  I get a pop-up indicating there Firefox has detected that I need a patch and is scanning my computer.  I closed the browser each time as soon as the scanning started.
The first time it happened, I ran MalwareBytes and it came up with PUP.Optional.InstallCore which it cleaned.  Ran Webroot scan and nothing came up.  Pop-ups have been coming back every night now with MalwareBytes and Webroot showing no evidence of anything else.  Interestingly, the behavior is such that I get the webpage I want, but FireFox is then taken over by something which replaces the page without opening up another tab.  I'm guessing I have something I don't want hidden away.
Apparently not alone as this Mozilla support page would suggest - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1092584

In the past 3 days, I have been encountering problems, which I believe are due to spyware on my Windows XP. I have attempted SpybotSD, Norton Antivirus, and even pored through a Hijack log. Can anyone help me? Here are a few irregular symptoms:

1) When I search in google, and I click upon a search result, I am redirected to another site. However, this occurs, only for the first click, for after that, google works normally.

2) I cannot search my computer using ANY program that scans. SpybotSD searches up to Central24, before slowing to a crawl, and never finishes. Norton Antivirus, on the hand, fails to even load the antivirus scan screen, although Security Center DOES load. On a related note, one of my scanning programs, known as RegistryFix, that cleans the registry, fails to search.

Any assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Hello out there,

I am running Windows XP Professional SP2,About a month ago,I noticed my internet connection could not connect to secure web sites,or ftp sites, yet i can seem to conect to everything else.I tried uninstalling firefox, then re-installing it,and now firefox wont connect to ANY sites at all,and i am having to use Internet Explorer 7 to access the web,but i stil cant access https or ftp sites.
I have searched long and hard for anybody else that is having same problems, and found some people do have the same problem, but ive tried their solutions to no avail.

I have recently installed zonealarm, hoping it might fix the problm, but it has not.I cant even conect BitComet,or Skype, yet i have no problem accessing my e-mails from incredimail.
Also, for some reason when i am in explorer, and accessing websites,i cant open anything in a new tab,it just opens a blank page, and my Dial-up Connection box keeps flashing on and of the screen until the site is loaded.

Ive tried playing around with my network settings, but i only have the 1 pc,and i have a D-Link DSL-200 ADSL Modem attached, but no other computers.

Ive tried turning the XP Firewall off,but stil have same problems.
As you can probably understand,I am at my wits end.

Here is the information i get when i type ipconfig /all into my cmd prompt:

My pc has just been extensived upraded, now I find that all the time my computer is in use it interferes with the radio in ANOTHER room !?! The radio channels sound very much out of tune and there is much "hissing" noise. As soon as I switch the pc off the radio is crystal clear again. I also now note that when I open SoundForge 6 there is far more "floor noise" present before I even try to capture any sound file I input from my hi-fi which is connected to my pc. The tuner on my hi-fi also suffers the same fate as the radio in a separate room. My hi-fi system is in the same room next to my pc and none of these aggravating problems were present before. I have not changed anything regarding my hi-fi or the way in which it is connected to my computer though I have got another soundcard, the onboard one that came with the Intel D925XCV I've just bought. I was previously using a VideoLogic Sonic Fury 5.1 card. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting cables to and from my hi-fi system as a process of elimination, nothing has stopped the horrible noise except turning the computer off.

A:PC interferes with radio !

Most of the time it's the power supply that's causeing this type of electrical noise. If you can, I'd try swapping it and see if it continues..

I've started using WebWasher -- great utility, highly recommend it -- and noticed that it seems to prevent me from accessing a news and discussion site that I frequent (www.smirkingchimp.com), which I believe uses php scripting. (Please forgive my ignorance if that's a stupid way to put it; I'm not up on these things. Actually, please enlighten me if I'm misdescribing it.)

If webwasher is running and I try to connect, I get a blank white screen with:

Location : offline.php (but without spaces on either side of the colon; how do I turn off those damn smilies?)

Doesn't matter whether ww is enabled or disabled; message is the same. I have to actually *close* it in order to access the site. Haven't noticed the problem with any other sites. I've tried playing with all the settings I could see that looked possibly related; no luck.

Any ideas?

When I first bought my CanoScan 8800F and set about scanning my old slides I was a bit enthusiastic and scanned at the default resolution. The resulting images, when printed, were poor quality. I have now started re-scanning all 124 slides at 4800dpi (or is it ppi?). The trouble is that when I enhance them or change their sizes Photoshop takes ages to complete the operation. Should I scan at 4800 or 2400 then resize the images to 600 before doing any enhancing? Is there some way to scan slides so that they print at an acceptable resolution but do not involve hours of waiting? I also want to burn the scanned images to a DVD.

I am enquiring for a friend who found that Google Chrome would not load any sites. I helped him over the phone and, to cut a long story short, got him to uninstall and re-install Chrome via Internet Explorer. Unfortunately, during the installation process he receive an Error 502 message and the installation stopped. To make the story even shorter, I eventually discovered that one of his grandchildren had downloaded SweetMI, regarded by some anti-virus programs as being malware. His default search engine in IE had changed from Google to SweetMI. I got him to uninstall SweetMI via windows (I should have got him to use Revo Uninstaller) but the problem persists and he cannot download Google Chrome. We have tried lots of approaches but without success. Any suggestions?

Whenever I try setting a static ip it works fine but other computers can't access my files on the homegroup (and I can't access theres either) , they can join alright and access each others fine.

What do you guys suggest?

A:Static ip interferes with homegroup.

Are you picking a static IP that is in the range of the dynamically assigned IPs that the router gives out? I'm guessing that your static IP is the same as one of the other computers.

It's easier to let your router pick the IP address, and then use the router's admin console to permanently assign that IP to that specific computer. It's called DHCP reservation.

Hello Community!  Have had this very frustrating issue with Skype for quite sometime now.  Whenever I take a call no other sounds in the background will come through.
Things I have already attempted:
-Reinstalling Skype
-Control Panel -> Sounds ->Headphones Properties -> Unchecked "Allow application to take       exclusive control of this device"
-Sounds -> Communication Tab -> "Do Nothing"
-I've tried cycling through all different available speaker options in Skype
-Tested Ringing and I can hear while on a call
-Tested Speaker through Control Panel and sound plays while on call
-I have unchecked "Automatically adjust speaker settings"
-Have messed with settings in Beats Audio nothing seems to change, again can test headphones in this application and get sound same as testing in Skype and Control Panel but this is the only other sound I can get to play while on a call.
I'm sure there's more that I've tried over the months but these are the ones that come to mind, I've never had a problem with the audio on a call just that no other audio will come through other than the person speaking, cannot game, cannot watch a youtube video while on call etc.
Any ideas would be nice, thanks for your time

A:Skype interferes with sound

I don't think any sound system can handle more than one signal at a time. You can output the one signal to more than one output, and you can mix two inputs into one output signal but as far as I know you cannot get two different outputs out of one audio system. Your computer is judging that at the time of a Skype conversation the telephone conversation is the most important signal, therefore it mutes out any others.
If you have two sound systems on your computer - say onboard audio and an add-on soundcard - it might be possible to get Skype out ot one and the background to YouTube out of the other, but I have never tried this.

Windows XP on old Dell Inspiron computer. Whenever I try to load Microsoft Picture It! Photo 2002, which I know to be resident on my machine, the first (usual) screen comes up. Then we go to white and then the program starts in the background but good ol' Windows Installer jumps up and tries to install what's already running.

I lost the installation disc years ago and have installed a new HDD since. I have to click CANCEL about ten times before I can use the program. Went to regedit and it wasn't there anywhere. Not really concerned about this. It's just annoying to have to play their game every time I want to use my program

Any clues? Please, I would prefer responses from true deep computerists, Please, no re-install. Please, nothing but a response from someone who has been there and found a real answer.

Need screenshots? Let me know.

Thank you.

Hi, I don't know how much help I will be for you, but worth an attempt.

Did you carry the program over by backing up something, on a disk perhaps to put on the newer hard disk? How did it get on the new drive?

PictureIt 2002 is also found on some similar model Inspiron Dell CDs that came with new computers back in those days.... here is an example

These usually will install on a Dell. Or, you may be able to run a repair of your Picture It Photo software from Add/Remove Programs list....does it have a "Repair" button when you go into the Control Panel>Add Remove Programs and look up MS PictureIt 2002?
