Yoga X1 3rd Gen only charging when powered off

Q: Yoga X1 3rd Gen only charging when powered off

Dear community, I have some strange behavior with my X1Y3 which does only charge the battery if I shut down the PC without charger plugged-in and then plug the charger once the system is off. In this special case the small orange LED is lid up and the battery is charged. During power-on, in sleep and even when hibernating the orange LED stays off and the battery is not being charged. Windows 10 gives me the information that AC is plugged in but the battery is not being charged ("plugged in, but not charging) and also the Vantage Tool correctly recognizes the 65W charger being connected. What could be the issue? Driver, charging unit or the battery itself? I'm simply puzzled. Thanks in advance and cheers

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Same here, it doesnt charge whether the laptop is on or off. And shows the battery at 0. If you plug in it works but the second you go mobile it doesn't.

Have any of You Dear Yoga 900 users suceeded charging iPhone 7 from Yoga 900-13ISK  powered USB (the one with little battery symbol) while laptop is off and unplugged from the wall? My laptop is not able to do this, but it charges other devices like Griffin BT headset adapter, Anker Soundcore etc. When laptop is on, USB port works well. I'm able to charge my iPhone 7 form my wife's Yoga 500-14IBD, which  is equipped with exactly the same powered (always-on) USB 3.0. The only idea I have, is that this strange behaviour is somehow connected with BIOS. I updated my BIOS in November, 2016 to ver. C6CN39WW (Insyde H.20). That version of BIOS has no toggle to enable or disable USB always-on (my wife's Yoga 500 have it).  I would be grateful if anyone could share their experience about this issue. I need to be sure if it is a software/BIOS/hardware thing, cause my laptop is under warranty. Official support told my that USB 3.0 is not able to charge iPhone 7 at all since it needs 1A and USB 3.0 is 0,9A only, but this is obviously a rubbish since I wouldn't be able to charge it from my wife's Yoga. Thanks KubaM

Thinkpad x250, less than two years old. Running Windows 10. Yesterday afternoon after having my laptop plugged in for about a half an hour, I realised that it hadn't increased in charge at all from 9%. I clicked to open the charging icon on the taskbar and it said Battery 1 was at 12% and charging, while Battery 2 was at 5% and not charging. I unplugged, turned my cable and plugged it back in - same thing. I took the battery out, waited a moment, put it back in. No dice. I repeated this step a couple times. I left it to charge overnight, hoping that might resolve something but no luck. When I woke up this morning, it was now at 8%, with Battery 1 at 10% and charging while Battery 2 remained at 5% without charging. My boyfriend has the same charger, so I switched to his to experiment. Battery 2 started to "charge" while Battery 1 stopped. Neither has gained any charge, however. When I switched back to my charging cable, Battery 2 continues to be the one to "charge" and now the battery says it's at 7%. I uninstalled the drivers, took the battery out for a minute and rebooted, reinstalled the drivers, and there's been no change. I went into Lenovo Settings and tried to run the Reset Gauge, but it failed as the battery would not charge. Additionally, none of the thresholds are on. As it is being powered by the cable, and not shutting down, I know that it might be alright as long as I keep it plugged in perpetually, but I'm concerned that once th... The charger that came with my laptop I beleave was a 65 wat charger but I'm not 100% sure. The one I'm borrowing is 45 wat. Hi, I have an older gateway laptop, with vista on it. The laptop says it charges fine, but once i power it up it makes somewhat of a screeching and a ringing noise, and stops charging. The laptop itself can be fully charged and die in soon to about 5 five minutes when unplugged, but that is usual. The main issue is, when the laptop is powerd down, its light that shows that it's chargine, or fully charged and plugged in, when i power the laptop, the charger just stops working, and does the screeching deal.

Hi, the old girl is generally still going. My issue is now that when the x1 is powered up and plugged in it does not permanently recognize that the power cord is plugged in and alternates every second between battery power and cord power. As a result it does not charge sufficiently and runs out of battery at some point. When powered down and plugged in the battery charges over several hours and the laptop can be put back in use. The cord seems fine and the green light on the side of the computer when plugged in does not flicker.. Thanks for your ideas.

My Yoga 720-15IKB has recently started to completely drain the battery when the system is powered off. I will power the system down with a 100% charge, let it sit overnight, and then start the computer in the morning. The system boots up and the battery gauge initially reads 100%, but within a few minutes I get a low power warning and the PC shuts off automatically. This has just started happening, so I'm not sure if it is a software/BIOS update or if I have a faulty battery. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I got a used Lenovo Yoga 2 11 (YB02496129), installed Windows 10 and swaped out the old hard drive for an ssd (of course installed all drivers for my device). When powered off, I lose up to 50% of charge while the notebook is turned off (not sleep or energy saving). The battery itself seems fine, because I can still use it for roughly 3-5 hours. As I thought that it is an Windows 10 issue (software based), I installed linux ubuntu 18.04. Same result, 33% battery drain overnight. What I tried:- reading through other forum posts with the same problem- installing/deinstalling Lenovo Vantage (updated my bios and drivers)- changed the power off button behavior (shutdown instead of energy saving)- turning of the device by holding the powerbutton for 10 seconds- changed the ssd (so I basicly got my windows 10 ssd out and insterted a fresh one for ubuntu)- installed linux ubuntu 18.04 I cant use a notebook that overnight loses all of its charge for obvious reasons. Do you have any sugesstions? Seems like its a known problem, maybe someone solved it already.

Yesterday I went to class and when I tried to turn on my laptop it did not display anything except turn on the backlight and start up the fans. There is no visible damage and I did not drop it or spill anything on it recently. I tried plugging it into an external monitor to see if the screen was the issue, but nothing. I tried unplugging the battery and pressing the power button for 30 seconds as suggested, and doing the same, but nothing. I've had issues before of my BIOS not being up to date and messing with the functionality of the laptop. Does anyone know what the issue may be? I'm afraid it is the motherboard, which would mean I would have to scrap my $1000 laptop after 3 years, but I would like to take any suggestions as to what the issue may be, other than the motherboard. Thanks!

The other day I found that my old Microsoft Display Dock (HD500) works just fine connected to the second TB3 port. It is able to connect a couple of USB peripherals, and outputs a perfectly fine 1920x1200 image to my Dell monitor.  Great. But: since it outputs only 5V, there's no way it can charge the X1Y3, so for long sessions I might need to connect a charger to the X1Y3.   My question: can I safely connect the official Lenovo charger directly to the TB3 charging port on my X1Y3 while the powered (5V) USBC cable from the Display Dock is connected to the second TB3 port? Or should I expect a bright flash and the smell of ozone? I'm hoping there's some kind of internal protection for these kinds of scenarios, but I hestitate to investigate this through trial and error.

Hi,I've searched the forums and tried all suggestions to no avail. When my laptop is unplugged, after about 2 minutes of inactivity, the screen goes dim. I'm on Win 10 64 bits. Most forum posts suggest checking two things, which I did, and it didn't fix the issue:I checked Windows' power settings, and I set the brightness to 100% even when on battery.I've disabled the "Adaptive brightness" setting, and the "Dim display after X minutes" setting.I checked Intel's Graphics power settings and disabled the "Power saving technology" setting.Nothing works. I don't know what to check next. It's fine when I work on my laptop because it isn't "inactive", but as soon as I watch a video on Youtube or Netflix the screen dims after a couple of minutes. The dimming itself is also weird. It not like only brightness is reduced. Even color saturation is down, as if the display had a milky white filter applied to it.Any help in tracking down this issue is greatly appreciated.Thanks.

Hello, I have a ThinkPad X380 Yoga running Lenovo R0SET33W (1.17), 18-Jul-18 BIOS. I noticed that everytime I boot the laptop connected to the docking station or directly with electric power, the performance slows down significantly. Once I unplug the power cord for few seconds and reconnect, it starts functioning as normal. I have also noticed during course of operation connected to electric power, it starts to slow down but by unplugging and reconnecting, it's fixed. Assume this is a BIOS issue? Any other drivers needs to be updated? Thank you for your quick response.

Hi. I recently bought a Lenovo Yoga 500 laptop, and I'm quite disappointed. When I plug in my charger, 9/10 times it starts to charge, then immediately stop charging, then charge again for a second. This results in never charging. Eventually it charges normally, but it's completely random and sometimes requires 5+ restarts. I need this laptop for school so taking it off for repair is hard for me but I will do it if there is no other way. I got a second charger from a friend and this still occurs, so the problem isn't with the charger. Anyone have any idea for a fix? Thanks

Solid white means fully charged or nearly so.  There is no "best" strategy.  It depends on how often and how long you use it when it is plugged in.  I use mine mostly on battery and I plug it in at night to charge.  I have it set in Vantage to start charging at 70% and stop at 98%.

Earlier today, my Yoga 3 Pro decided to stop charging.  When plugged in, the battery continues to drain as if it was not plugged in.  I have tested the A/C adapter by plugging in my phone with a micro USB and that worked fine, and the USB charging slot works when my wireless mouse is plugged into it, so I assume it must be the strange Y3P USB cable that is not working.   Would a normal USB to USB cable work for charging my laptop?  If not, how do I replace that "kink" USB cable?  I haven't seen any for sale anywhere and I'd rather not have to pay $40 for a whole new charger on the Lenovo site if the cable is the only issue.

Solved!

Go to Solution.

A:Yoga 3 Pro Not Charging

Hello and welcome,

The Y3P and its charger need that special cable.  The charger and laptop have an extra set of pins in the USB sockets that pass 20V to charge the laptop.  A standard USB cable doesn't support those extra contacts.  The charger also provides 5V on the standart USB pins.

Your test of the charger with a your phone shows that the 5V portion of the charger is working but doesn't verify the 20V portion.  It's possible that the charger is bad.

When you plug the laptop and charger together does the battery icon indicate that AC power is attached?  You could have a bad charger, a bad cable, a bad laptop connector (or other component) or the battery management software could be messed up.

Sorry I don't have an easy test or fix.  It may be necessary to actually swap the cable and charger to diagnose this one.

[edit] The Y3P is a fairly new machine.  If this is under warranty, support should be able to help you:  1-877-4-Lenovo, 1-877-453-6686

Hi there

Intuitively one might think using Powered (from the mains) external USB HDD's would require more power from the computer as well compared with those small self powered units.

I've no way to measure this but I'm sure the small units might consume MORE power as the computer has to supply all the power for Disk rotation and the USB I/O controller.

I only ask this because I need to put two large powered USB units (both with 2 X 3 TB Raid 0 HDD's in each unit) on to a USB 3 Hub.
The two HDD units seem to perform perfectly well whether connected to the chargeable port on an HP laptop or the "non chargeable" ones.

The RAID 0 is powered by the HDD itself (internal Hardware RAID) --used RAID 0 for speed -- don't need to mirror etc - I've enough backup if the whole thing goes bonkers. !!

The files on these HDD's are serving music and video so not intensive used -- don't seem to have any problem streaming media from the laptop.

Any engineers out there - curious over what is the actual load (power wise) on the computer if a POWERED USB HDD is used compared to a Self powered one. Note the Hub I'm using is not also powered.

Cheers

I've just run into the problem again of my X1 Yoga 3rd Gen not charging when it's turned off / shut down. The red charging light comes on, but when I leave the laptop charging overnight & come back to it the next day, it hasn't charged at all.  This used to happen a lot when I first got the machine, but hasn't happened in several months, so I thought it was fixed. It's only started happening again today, and the one change that happened is Windows asked me last night to Update & Shut Down when I turned it off.  When I turned the machine back on today, it completed installing the updates, but I noticed the battery was still only at 57% with the red charging light on.  Perhaps the machine isn't able to charge when Windows is in the middle of an updating process? If it's tied to the particular updates, last night's update was installing KB4494441 (2019-05 Cumulative update for Windows 1809), as well as KB4497932 (Adobe Flash update) and KB4499405 (Cumulative update for .NET 3.5 - 4.8). I'll keep an eye on it to see if it's a fluke.  The machine is charging again while it's switched on, but that's the same behaviour I had last time I encountered these charging problems - I had to leave the screen/laptop on overnight for charging to work.

The 33% does not appear accurate, either, given that the unit goes dark as soon as I disconnect the power supply. I have uninstalled both of Device Manager's battery entries, allowing them to reinstall upon system restart, to no avail. I have a Yoga 370 plugged into a ThinkPad USB-C Dock (DK1633) with the provided USB-C cable, and Windows is showing "Plugged in" but also "Not charging" as the battery has continued to decline in this configuration (it's declined from ~60% when it was first docked, and is now at 29%.) What's this mean, and how do I correct it? More detail: The USB-C cable is plugged into the port next to the power on the dock (the only place it fits.)The dock is powered, as evidenced by the power light being on.The USB-C cable is plugged into the Yoga at the "lightning" port (again, the only place it fits.)I've tried the most obvious googleable steps, which are to remove the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" in Device Manager and re-add/update. This didn't change the behavior.I should add that I first noticed this problem only a couple weeks ago. Before that I believe the dock was charging the laptop as expected, in the same configuraton it's in now.I have not yet tried charging with the power cable that comes with the Yoga (instead of the dock/USB-C) since this problem started happening. I don't have the cable handy, and won't for a few days.
