Both C & D drives on Disk 1, 100% disk usage most of time

Q: Both C & D drives on Disk 1, 100% disk usage most of time

My laptop (Lenovo Y500 Laptop | Lenovo US) has a 1TB 5400rpm hard drive C: and it also has a 24GB chached SSD D:. The link only shows a 16, but mine was 24. Today, I left my computer idle while I was at class (I'm in college) and when I came back it was frozen on the start up screen Lenovo Logo. As customary with computer problems, I turned it off and turned it on again. It booted up fine, maybe the tiniest bit slow, but nothing really different from the norm. But, when I opened up Chrome, my entire computer froze up after about five seconds, and I had to force shut down. This happened about 10 times (not just with Chrome, but with explorer and Task Manager too). Weird thing is, I only got one BSOD, for MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. When it magically started up without immediately freezing after the first click, I scanned for viruses--nothing changed. I CCleaned the temp files and registry--still nothing. I checked for fragmentation--0% fragmented. Once I finally got Task Manager open, I started thoroughly checking all the tabs. Here's what I found:
Attachment 51822
See how Disk 1 has C: AND D: ? I'm 100% sure that D: used to be on Disk 0. After some more freezing and rebooting, I discovered that Disk 1 maxes out active time to 100% really, really easily. Average response time maxed over 1000. Actually, I'm surprised my computer hasn't frozen since I started typing this post. It's that bad.

I have not done a restore point because I thought it probably wouldn't help, since I haven't installed anything in the past few days that could affect this. The last thing I installed was ModelSim, but that was a few weeks back. This problem came out of nowhere. I looked around a little bit online and a couple people had hard drives die on them, but this time my main drive Disk 1 has both drives on it. Which is weird.

Here's some screenshots of My PC, C:, and D:.

Attachment 51824

Attachment 51825
I believe all those text documents from 2007 are part of ModelSim, as are the Mentor Graphics and modeltech64_10.3b folders. Remote Programs, on the other hand, had a bunch of folders for games that were last modified in 2013--and I know I did not put them there.
Attachment 51826
Do I have like some sort of remote control virus or something? I'm getting scared now because I'm a poor college student who has like a total of $500, which will not buy a laptop that will run engineering software very well. EDIT I found some game launching program that I hadn't installed, so I uninstalled it. I think it may have been on there from when I sent my laptop in for repairs this summer. Bloatware, you know. I deleted the game folders too.
I "Did not have permission to access" the PerfLogs folder, but when I opened it as admin, it was empty. It too was from summer '13. Weird stuff is going on. The RecoverLog folder has some stuff in it, can't really tell what it is.
Attachment 51827
I'm pretty sure that PerfLogs and RecoveryLogs are from ModelSim, since they weren't there a few weeks ago. But the Remote Programs folder with random games in it scares me.

Anyway, the real thing here is the D: drive.
Attachment 51828
the Application folder only has some McAfee thingie in it, and the drivers folder has drivers in it. I don't remember what was in there before but I have a vague memory that there should be something else in there too. Not sure about that one.

Anyway, I will try to do a restore point and maybe uninstall ModelSim since I don't really need it. But any professional help would be nice.

Preferred Solution: Both C & D drives on Disk 1, 100% disk usage most of time

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!
Add to that the release of the Win10 preview and my system messing up - and I'm way behind on replying to topics. Sorry!

Do your still need help with this problem?
I will be notified if you reply to this topic and will respond within 48 hours.

Hi! I'm new to this forum and have exhausted all online video tutorials, various blog posts, and a number of websites addressing this issue but to no avail. I'm at a loss and am so fed up with this. I have no clue what to do at this point and am tempted to get a new HD or an SSD at this point but would like to try to avoid that for obvious reasons as I feel this could be fixed somehow or someway that I just can't seem to find. Any and all help would be highly appreciated!

Thanks for reading!

[Edit]: I can provide any and all details about my pc upon request, just let me know.

I keep getting 100 disk usage. Its always slowing me computer down... I searched and searched for a solution and came across many off which to no avail.

A:I have 100 disk Usage all the time :(

Is it possible that Kaspersky is "actively" doing a system scan? How long since you installed Kaspersky, and did you allow enough time for it do a complete scan of all your files? If yes, I would remove Kaspersky (verify that disk activity stops) then report back to this forum.

You may want to try Malwarebytes. Many here recommend this product (they have a free version too).

For some reason the last few days my disk usage in the task manager is always showing as 99% or 100%, but when adding up the amount of disk apparently being used, it only reaches about 2MB/s at it's highest, usually closer to 1MB/s. I am worried this is malware, but malwarebytes anti malware has not picked anything up. I am using windows 8.1 operating system.

I've been having this problem for a long time, I've tried resetting my pc to factory settings, didn't work. I tried windows trouble-shooter, didn't work. When I boot I am greeted with a zoostorm logo for about 50 seconds followed by a black screen for 1 minute, and then a windows screen for about 30 seconds. Booting takes about 2-3 mins and even when I'm finally in, my programs load extremely slow and I can only open chrome after a minute otherwise it lags. Remember I have reset my pc so nothing runs on startup apart from steam. I have a gtx 970 and the latest drivers for it. Also I get 100% disk usage when performing certain tasks. my cpu,gpu and memory never go to such percentage and if they do its because I'm running a very cpu,gpu or ram intensive game. I have not changed anything in my bios since I got my pc and have never done anything to the disk drive (all I know is my HDD is 3tb and has a speed of around 120mb/s) The only thing I have changed on my pc since I got it was an upgrade to windows 10 from 8.1, gtx 970 from a 750ti and a 750w power supply by corsair. I do not know if this problem happened when I had windows 8.1 but even if windows 10 is the problem there must be a way to fix it as I despise using windows 8.1 anymore. Another thing to note is that loading times for games take a little longer than my friends and my pc is slow at downloading games, my disk usage when installing games is usually 13mb/s and I get 100% disk usage from using 13mb/s, As shown in th... A:Very painful and slow boot time and 100% disk usage

Wait for fallout 4 to finish downloading.Keep in mind that mechanical hard drives have much smaller performance numbers when disk reads/writes are NOT sequential. What hd tune does in order to achieve such high speeds inside benchmarking is a linear read/write,that is reading/writing data to/from adjacent sectors making the actuator and the read/write head move very little.During random reads/writes performance drops dramatically due to the fact that the actuator has to move the reading head all over the platter which induces a speed and latency penalty. There are some tricks in order to achieve higher throughput such as short stroking but you lose capacity. In the end my recomandation is still to wait for fallout to finish downloading/installing and then see if it still performs slow,or,if you have the money, buy a mediocre SSD just to keep windows on it,you will experience a gargantuan performance leap when it comes to aplication responsiveness/loading time.
As for the slow boot,I recommend a diagnostic boot,(run msconfig and select diagnostic startup).Windows will start in a fail-safe mode so don't panic if you see peropherals/software not working. If under a diagnostic boot you have normal performance, then most likely a program running at boot(either a driver or updater or something) is chocking your system.

hello i am also having the %100 disk usage problem and am starting a thread to upload my etl. file and see if i can get a solution. thnx. i should also mention i have tried every suggestion i have read on the internet even ones that worked for other people
did not work for me i.e. (switching to high performance power plan, disabling cd drive, etc.) no matter what i try "system" is always utilizing 90%-100% of my hard drive and it is driving me crazy.
i can barely do anything on computer without it taking 10x times longer than it should. ive also run dskchk and boot time virus scans and malware scans. all to no avail. i have more than enough ram and a quad core cpu. when i first purchased my laptop it
was running windows 8 and was lightning fast once i upgraded to 8.1 i think is when the issue started occurring.
i am currently installing the windows assessment and deployment kit right now and will upload my etl. file to the skydrive asap.

Hello all,
My computer is freezing up all the time and I believe its due to my disk. It is very annoying. I cannot figure out why its doing this. I see my read and write speeds are not so great. Looking at the disk transfer rate compared to the active time, shouldn't it be faster? Sometimes my active time is consistently at 100% and I cannot get anything done on my computer. Anytime my disk active time is at 100% the computer freezes and as you can see its quite often. Is my HD about to fry?
Any help solving this problem would be appreciated.

Hey everybody. First a little background, I have a 64 gb SSD which has my operating system on it, and I use a 3 tb HDD for all of my data/programs. Yesterday I was playing Counter-Strike for a while and I noticed every now and then I would get about a 3 second sputter where there's a noticeable lag spike. I figured it was just because I was on wireless so I ignored it (even though it hadn't done this in the past). After logging out of Steam to switch to another account, everything I started became excruciatingly slow. After doing some research I opened the Resource Monitor and navigated to "disk" tab to find that the response time of 20+ items were in the thousands+. I will try to give a list of all the things I've done to troubleshoot this problem, but might forget some:
rebooted in safe mode
did a malware check (malwarebytes)
did a quick check with MSE on my HDD (E (all clean)
ran chkdsk and one other I can't remember what the command was, both turned out clean
defrag'd the drive
installed SeaTools (SMART check successfull, all other checks stop at 90%)
cleaned trashcan
reinstalled STEAM (was the first program that encountered any difficulty)

I know there's more to this list but I can't think of anything else right now. As you might have already guessed, I'm pretty sure my disk itself is all right. I'm not sure what is causing the extremely slow response time, but whenever a program from my E: drive (HDD) is... Read more

my current issue is that i wanted to reformat and install XP onto the HDD.
But it is not reading any software disks, do you think it would it be a software, OS or hardware problem. Could you direct me where to post if this is in the worng place.

The computer is running Xp home ed at the mo and boots up, but i have to press F1 in the bios prompt at the mo as it is set to boot from cd drive, which fails. the cdwr/dvd reads and will play dvd's but will not read any software disks. i have tried printer, OS , broadband initial drivers disk. In the cdwr/dvd properties it says file system unknown when a software disk is iinserted. This is true for jpegs and audo disks!
Any ideas. I have updated the fireware for the drive.

Exactly the same problem - Acer Aspire One.
I was having performance problems and ran chkdsk which found some bad clusters. Next thing I know, I restart and Windows won't come up. I could get a cmd prompt going and copied out my files and reset the system. Still nothing. Finally got it going by turning it on and plugging in a recovery flash drive. Completely reinistalled 8.0. Installed 126 updates. Installed 8.1. Installed 26 updates. And now I'm smack in the 100% disk usage.
Tried setting Virtual Memory, which was small.

Hello Windows 10 Forums,
I am still a newbie here and right now
I am suffering a difficulty in fixing highly disk usage (almost 100%) every time I restart my laptop!
I am using Windows 10.

Every reboot made my laptop seems slow to start-up.
However, shutdown the laptop and start it back was okay though. The disk usage will stay at 3%-11% during start-up.
Furthermore, when I am using Microsoft Visual Studio or any heavy intensive disk usage programs, my laptop will lag
I have checked the task manager and it shows 100% disk usage but my CPU was still remain at 14-18%.

Please help me!
Sorry for my bad grammar.

Hi guys, hope you can help me please. I'm not too computer savvy so sorry if I'm missing something important or I say something dumb. I'm really frustrated and I'm trying my best to learn and solve this problem.
So I bought this Vaio with Core i5-3210M, 4Gb Ram, Windows 8 64 bit. I had really high hopes for it, coming from an i3. For the first few weeks it worked fine, but then it started to freeze while watching movies. Then it started happening all the time, and the cooling fan became consistently noisy for working at full capacity.
I was used to opening task manager on older systems when this happened to see if there was a non-responding program and force it closed, so I noticed Task Manager offers some more features in Win 8. Here, I see that CPU usage is high, staying always around 70% and from time to time reaching 100. At this moment, the process taking the biggest slice is called VCS System Tray with 58%.
What's perhaps more concerning, is that Disk usage is almost constantly on 100%. And by this I mean it reaches 100 and stays there for long periods of time, perhaps up to 20 minutes, then it falls down a few seconds and up again to 100. During this time the computer is excruciatingly painful to use. To even open a program takes forever. When this happens, it seems that Chrome is at the top of the list of processes with most disk usage, with about 1-2Mbps, but this sometimes changes and the list can be led by System, Utorrent, Octoshape, VCS System Tray, Communication... Every 10-40 minutes, the application I'm currently working in [whither it be skype, L4D2, or firefox] becomes unresponsive, and after a minute or two, the window turns white, notifying me that it's not responding. This unresponsiveness quickly spreads to other open processes, rendering them frozen as well. I can still use the mouse, and it appears rainmeter still responds [updates, showing barely any CPU usage].

Steps I've taken to try and resolve this:
Using only one main program, still does it
turning the computer off and on again
Memtest is clean
chkdisk passes
MBAM/MSE scans return nothing
no memory overflows that I can see

While troubleshooting, I noticed that during the 'fit of unresponsiveness' the disk usage light on my tower is solid, but when I looked at the disk usage in the resource monitor, no processes whatsoever were using it [screenshot related]

If any more specifications are needed, I'll be happy to elaborate.

This sounds straight forward, but I can not figure this out I am new to this. I have a Etower 500 MHz with 192 mb's of memory and 4 gig hard drive. I used partition magic 3.5 to partition the drive inorder to try and install DOS and win98 and maybe linux. I am following the instructions from this web site here>> http://www.xperts.co.za/multi-boot/ I am using the disks that I made from downloading from this site referring to REUEL Boot disk this disk took me through the entire process. It all went great until I rebooted and I keep getting Non-System disk or disk error I have no disk's in the drives. I even installed win98 and all it did was go straight to windows. With in windows I could see the drives I partitioned all of them except the one that windows was actually on. I have done this again and again trying to see if I did anything wrong. Anybody know what is wrong?
Also can anyone tell me how to get free dos I can not figure out what files to download. The one that I am trying to install now is suppose to be mini dos 6.22. I am really new to dos so I am doing a lot of guessing.

Hello pvnam95 and welcome to Seven Forums.

The easiest way is probably "drag and drop". Open each disk in a separate window and drag the data from one disk to the other.

4 Ways to Transfer Data Between Two Hard Drives - wikiHow

But it really depends on what kinds of drives you have (internal, external, spinner, solid state) and the type of data you're trying to move (large movies, small documents, encrypted, the operating system, etc.) Could you provide a screenshot of your Disk Management? And also fill in your System Specs.

Hi gCoreByte, is this still happening? The reason I ask is I recently did a clean install of 8.1 and saw the same - Defender was using all Disk (and CPU actually) it could for several hours. So was the indexing service. Once it had finished it all settled down.

I don't think you necessarily need to be worried but if it is still happening please post a picture from task manager details tab.

My disk usage always goes to 100% because of this process "wsappx" with a very high disk usage at startup with  10-30+ mb/s but after 10-15 minutes it lowers down to 0 mb/s and then after a few minutes it goes up again.

A:100% Disk usage!

That file's not part of Windows 7.  However you neglected to mention what version you're running or the make and model of your computer.  You could run Malwarebytes and your antivirus program in Safe Mode if you don't know what this thing is.

A week ago I did a completely fresh install of Windows 8 64 bit and everything was working great. When I booted up my laptop on Wednesday I noticed it was running terribly slow. When I opened task manager I saw that disk usage was at 100% despite the combined total of data transfer being 0.8MB/s.

The problem occurs constantly if I set my laptop power mode to balanced but only occurs intermittently at high performance. I've run a chkdsk and everything is showing up fine and bizarrely there is no slowdown whatsoever on safe mode.

Any idea what I may have done wrong?

Go to your "tile" screen, and type "Disk Cleanup", then click the icon for this program. Let it run through and it will tell you where you can save disk space. Be sure to click the "Clean Up System Files" button also (requires admin rights), as this will clear out old windows update backups as well.

I'm on a Windows 10 OS and the computer is EXTREMELY slow. When I checked task manager, I realized that the disk usage and CPU usage are both almost 100%. I've checked for background apps, tweaked the virtual memory, disabled services, ran troubleshooting, etc. It seems like I've tried everything, but the computer is still very slow. I'm planning on doing an antivirus scan, but I haven't seemed to find anything suspicious yet. Help please and thank you!!!

Hey, my computer has had 100% disk usage after i used windows repair (all in one).
I tried restoring to older restore point, but it didn't help.
The disk usage is always 100% when i start up or start off sleep mode.

Does disk usage go down after a period of time?
Check the Task Manager to identify the process causing the high disk usage.

Hi there.
I upgraded recently to Windows 10. I don't know it this has anything to do with my problem or not. I hope you folks can tell me.

I run lots of large file for my hobby, Photography, which I've noticed is slowing my PC down to a walking pace.
My photos are one drive E. When I use Task Manager to check, it shows a usage of 100% on drive E while I access my photos.

I've tried compressing and defragging the drive.
Does anyone know why this should happen and what I can do about it?

See attached image

A:100% Disk Usage

What size is your E drive? Is it a physical hard drive or just a partition?

Windows needs at least 15% free space to run efficiently.

Have you tried moving some of your files to another drive/partition and defragging?

When opening programs my disk usage will spike up to 100% and my computer will freeze. sometimes I have to restart to be able to use it again. A:100% Disk Usage

Hi @Ecvalor!

One thing you can try in order to fix the 100% Disk Usage is to disable Superfetch (if you're using Windows 8 or 10). In order to do that you can follow the steps in this article:

If this doesn't help with the issue, then I'd suggest to make a backup of your most important data on another location and then run a diagnostic test on the HDD so you can see what its health is currently. You can use the manufacturers tool in case there is such available in the official manufacturers website since it's tuned to the specific firmware of the drive. For instance, if you have a WD drive download Data Lifeguard Diagnostics from here:

Once the results are ready feel free to upload some screenshots so I can take a look.

Hi there,

Recently, my laptop keeps spiking to 100% disk usage.
I've tried disabling Superfetch and Windows Search, adjusting the virtual memory, checking if I have the AHCI controller, check disk, none of it worked.
The only thing I haven't tried is System Restore (since I only noticed this after the last update) - I tried it, but it didn't work because it said the drive might be corrupt, and it still didn't work after chkdsk.
Any other ideas?

A:100% Disk Usage

Have you knocked the laptop while it was on / off because if you have then it may be corruption causing 100%, you know what that means an unrecoverable o.s, have you got a system recovery disk you could use ?

Also is it SSD or HDD ?

You will need a larger drive, unless you can free up storage by moving some of the contents.

All the time the ram and disk usage is around 90% to 100% and sometime windows even hangs up while using firefox only.I need to use firefox and some light programs only.
I have installed 2GB RAM

A:90% RAM usage and 100% Disk

The RAM use isn't necessarily a problem. All modern operating systems (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux) will automatically grab as much RAM as they can for caching purposes to improve system performance. In your case, the IGP on your CPU is reserving 512MB of your 2GB for itself, so you effectively only have 1.5GB of RAM. The OS will automatically release memory used for caching if needed by some other program. From the screenshot you posted, you only just booted the system so it's not necessarily out of the ordinary that your computer would have a lot of disk activity, especially on an A4 based system. That should settle down after a time.

However, on such a low end system you should make a point of limiting the number of programs you have running, making sure to use a lighter weight AV program and even go through the Black Viper "guide" to Windows Services and turn off the ones you aren't going to need. You can click on the name of each service to get a brief explanation of what it is and does so you if it's an optional service, you can turn it off if you're not going to use it.
