How can I change my default resolution on my monitor so it doesn't everydayRead other answers
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Until recently, I was always able to adjust my monitor's screen resolution. Now whenever I try to adjust it to 2048 by 1536 pixels (the most resolution), I get an error message that says:
OUT OF FREQUENCY
HF: 95.4 kHz
VF: 60.0 Hz
HF: 30-70 kHz
VF: 50-160 Hz
What does all this mean? Why can't I do something simple like set my screen resolution?
Help would be appreciated... thanks.
That's a pretty high resolution. Sometimes resolutions are listed that a monitor doesn't support. Where you able to set it there before?
I have a problem when i start using Win7 and adjust my screen resolution...
when i adjust the resolution to 1206x682 or higher, the whole windows become larger and eventually become larger than my screen. So i can see only part of my taskbar. However, this will not happen when i use XP.
Is this normal?
At this time i can't use any video editing software as they require 1024x768 or higher resolution, what should i do?
Sorry for my poor English. I am still an English learner.
when i set to a higher resolution in XP, the icons are smaller and the size of the windows doesnt change. But when i do this in 7, the size of icons doesnt change but the whole windows become larger.

AOC 2353 monitor, on windows 7 has a recommended resolution of 1920 by 1080
when it is set here I notice even the desktop boots up quick and efficient. opposed to when it is set at 1600 by 900. which is best on the eyes.
problem with 1920 by 1080 is that the folders and print are far too minute to see.
this is with Intel onboard video, from the processor.
is there a way to expand the text and folders? browsers can be zoomed
would having a video card help?
If you go into the advanced display settings, you can increase the size of items and fonts and can "bold" the text.
I've got bad eyes, so I do this every time I set up one of my computers after I install the Windows operating system.
The native resolution for my 27" monitors is 1920 X 1080.
This is an example of what my desktop looks like after changing the display settings.
As you can see, the icons and text are noticeably larger and bolder than they would be from using the default settings.

I've been looking for a program to adjust my screen resolution. I'm connecting my computer to a TV, unfortunately either my graphics card or the TV suck. I used to have a program with which I was able to set my custom screen resolution. Does anyone know of such a program?
Thanks in advance!
try this one
So I bought a new netbook for work travel recently and loaded a program that I need to use. Program runs fine and all, however the prescribed screen resolution for the program is 1024x768 and the netbook (with Windows 7 HE and an Intel GMA 3150) doesn't seem to want to go past 1024x600. Does anyone perhaps have a thought or a way to get 7 to display more here? I don't mind if I even just need to scroll around to get to all the material, but right now its just cutting off part of the program making it impossible to work on some of it.
While your 1024x768 program is a standard 4:3 aspect ratio, 1024x600 is a widescreen aspect ratio (16:9) as many netbooks have. I'm pretty sure that if 600 is the maximum pixel height it can display but you still need to match the 4:3 aspect ratio program, then you'll have to go down to 800x600 rather than up. Try that and let me know how it works.

Hi! something's really wrong with my Display Settings. In adjusting the Resolution, you can only adjust to 600x800 to 1024x768 pixels. I'm getting pissed trying everything. I think the default monitor should be turned off..
Please HELP ME
I have had my laptop for nearly half a year now and I just recently found an HDMI cable in an old junk box that can be connected from my widescreen Samsung DLP to my Laptop. The problem is that when I set my TV to be the main display the task bar does not fit on screen and I can barely see it. Another problem is when I play my games or watch videos they also appear to be bigger then what my screen is. I cant even see the exit or minus button when I make my windows/browsers in full screen. I have tried changing the screen resolution, but that doesn't work either. I then thought it might be my TV but it does not give my the option to change its aspect ratio.
I there solution to my little problem? Like a download or a program that is naturally in the computer that can adjust the aspect ratio (not resolution) manually for extended displays? And the resolution is on its recommended settings by the way.
What is the graphics card on your laptop? Both AMD and nVidia cards have overscan options in their software which should give you the capability to adjust your display size manually until it fits. Also check that you're outputting the correct resolution for your TV.Read other 3 answers
well when my laptop is plugged in it shows maxiumum brightness, but when its not plugged in it become brighter, yet brightness setting shows in the middle, for not plugged in, how can i get the plugged in brightness to equal unplugged brightness, and I have tried changing power settings.
First of all, please specify maker and model of your laptop. Some vendors could have their own third party replacements for some functions.
Also, please go to Control Panel - Power Options - on the right side of your current active power plan select "Change plan settings" - in the next window click "Change ADVANCED power settings" - then navigate to - Display - Display brightness and check percentage.

Hi everyone, I have a pretty weird tech problem.
What happens is, whenever I adjust my monitor's brightness (from its physical buttons) the screen turns black. However the monitor is still on, the LED is still green and the computer is still responsive, the screen just turns black.
I can use the computer just fine, as long as I don't try to adjust anything. If I do want to change something, I have to change the values a little, then restart, change them again, restart until I have the values I want. This problem appeared when I tried to adjust the brightness by keeping the + button pressed down, so it increased quickly.
Is this indicative of a dying monitor ? It is pretty old, it's an LG L1750SQ, 17 inch LCD, it's over 4 years old. Also, I do not believe the video card to the problem, since it stays pretty cool, it has a good heatsink on it.

Press and release F8 continually as soon as you power up the PC, this will get you to a menu, select 'Enable VGA mode' and press Enter.
Once at the desktop change the Display settings back to ones that worked before then reboot normally and you should be ok.
Hi. I'm new here and this is my first post. I looked around a little and found one other thread with a similar question, but the question wasn't really answered. I can't find anything on the net that doesn't confuse me so bad it makes my head hurt, so I thought I'd try asking here. Thanks in advance for any answers I get.
I will try and be as thorough as possible, although the resulting question will be simple. I'll start out with why I am asking the question to begin with.
So I am trying to play a game I used to play nearly ten years ago. It's a free online game called Continuum/Subspace and there are user created "zones" or variations of the game within the game (if that makes sense). I play in a zone called Trench Wars. It's a top down game, meaning you are looking down at your ship as if from above and the screen scrolls as you move to reveal more of the area (map) you are playing in. You are in a spaceship of your choice with varying weapons for each ship. The game requires aiming at your enemies before firing at them and anticipating their moves.
Well I noticed that playing at a higher resolution allows you to see more of your immediate area and expands your view of the map. It works just like your desktop in essence. The higher the resolution, the smaller the icons, but the more space you have. In the game, the higher the resolution, the smaller the ships are, but you can see more space around you. Obviously, this would give an advantage to anyone playing ... Read more
Simple answer is: you can not go over the native resolution of LCD panel because its physical thing for each pixel lcd panel has a cell you can not have more pixels than there is physical pixels in that panel.
smaller than native resolutions achieved by grouping more than one cell to form pixel thats why non native resolution on lcd sometimes gets blurry or edgy
This problem started happening about a week ago and I've never had a problem like this before. The problem is that often (but not always) when I start a game, it goes into full screen and it will usually change the resolution like mosts games do, except when I either exit the game normally, or alt+tab out of it, the resolution does not change back to normal. I have my desktop resolution set at 1024x768 normally. This seems to hold true for almost all my games. Even the windows screensaver causes the same problem if it changes the resolution.
After this happens, if I go into display properties and try to change any settings whether it is resolutuon, color depth, or even the refresh rate. I get an error that says it can't be done and I probably don't have administrative rights. The only way to fix it is to reboot the computer.
My graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce4 MX 420. Around when the probelms started I updated the drivers to some beta drivers from the Nvidia site. I assumed those might be the cause so I downgraded to the latest official foreceware drivers which I had installed before. The only other things I can think of that I have installed before the problem occoured was the new Microsoft Anti-spyware but I doubt that would have caused it.
Does anyone have any idea what is causing this problem? I am out of ideas...
I just bought an HP Pavillion dv6-7014nr and I love it! Except for one thing. I upgraded to the 1920x1080 screen to get the HD quality and the matte display. Everything on this screen is so tiny, its uncomfortable to read. I have increased the text size in windows to 130% dpi and I have downloaded and extension in Firefox to keep the zoom level I like. My problem is that with this increased DPI setting, the text in programs, such as iTunes gets cut off or overlaps. I was just wondering if there was a solution to this problem, or is it just something I have to live with?
Thanks very much!
1920x1080 doesn't suit everyone on a 15.6" screen as it's really more suited to large-screen external monitors (20" or more). It's big plus of course is that it gives you much more screen space to use for multi-tasking or using apps which have many palettes (like Photoshop). Personally I think 1920x1080 is way too high for the average laptop screen size unless you've got perfect eyesight.
If you don't need all that space, you may find that setting a lower resolution (and changing DPI & zoom levels back to their defaults) is more in line with what your eyesight can deal with. It probably won't look as pin-sharp as the native 1920x1080 resolution though, but at least you shouldn't get some app Windows extending beyond the screen edges.
hmm, this is wierd, everytime i start my bitcomet up/when it launches itself at windows start it seems to disapear of the screen, i have a 21.5 inch widescreen but my max screen resolution doesnt fit the whole screen, when i click my bitcomet comes up but going towards the right OFF the screen and i cant do anything..

Hi SevenUltimate welcome to the forums
I see you have a Geforce 220, I have the 210, the model down from you and have exactly the same issue.
Firstly, yes it's a driver issue. I have had to roll back to 258 edition to get it working properly again.
Take a look at my post about it here: Make Full screen actually look full screen maybe the suggestions will work for you, although they didn't for me.
Failing that, I'm willing to upload the 258 edition drivers to my Skydrive if you want? (mods/admins: please let me know if this is against the rules, don't think it is, but you never know)

Not sure about the software installation but you should be able to change the screen resolution of your monitor from the control panel. You should have a section there labelled "monitor" or the name of your graphic card.
Mine says "Control panel for NVIDIA" along with the graphic card icon but yours may be different.
Open this option and there should be a page on which you can change your screen resolution.
Mine is a slider but it could equally be a selection list. eg
800 x 600
960 x 600
1024 x 768
1162 x 864
1280 x 768
1280 x 800
1280 x 960
1280 x 1024
1360 x 768
1440 x 900
1680 x 1050
Pick the one you want and retry the software.
Best of luck

Did you press OK in the display settings dialog?
Maybe you are starting Windows in safe mode?
Maybe Windows isn't detecting the vid card correctly?
how would I test my screen resolution?
There are various free utilities that generate test patterns. One such program is called LCD Test, by Eric Smith. Some of the patterns can also be used on CRT monitors. To check your monitor's horizontal resolution, you use a pattern of alternating, 1 pixel wide, black and white vertical lines. To check your monitor's vertical resolution, you use a pattern of alternating, 1 pixel wide, black and horizontal white lines. The patterns are drawn based on the current settings of your video controller. If you have an LCD monitor, the controller should be set to match the native resolution of the LCD panel in the monitor.
A description of the program and the keyboard commands can be found here:
The program can be downloaded from the Major Geeks web site here:
The executable file runs the program directly, and does not need to be installed. It will probably trigger security warnings as being an unsigned program. If you are not comfortable with that, you will need to find another free or paid for program that passes Windows security.
Hey, my screen resolutions never seem to stay like they were. I had a 1440 * 900 selected which diappeared from the resolution list, so when I opned my PC this morning, my resolution was changed to something else than 1440 * 900 AND . . this resolution isn't supported anymore.
Another screen resolutions that are possible and have right dimensions, are 1680 * 1050 which is a bit too small for my eyes and 1280 * 768, which is a bit too big for my eyes. The 1440 * 900 is just about the right size, but this option seems to want to disappear every now and then. Any ideas?

Reinstalling Windows wipes all the drivers, and requires that you reload the drivers specific to your hardware and Windows version. The default WIndows drivers limit the resolution, as you have discovered.
You need to locate the correct drivers for your system and download and install them, if you do not have a CD that came with the system.
At my mom's computer. A friend of hers went and downloaded that stupid "billion hours free" via AOL (no offense to any AOL users). Well it seemed to mess up the screen resolution and now I can't get it to go past 640x480 and it's on 4bit! I can't seem to download any new drivers plus the screen is really hard to read...any advice out there before I have to pay AOL a visit with my trusty bat?
Have you uninstalled the AOHell software? That company has a history of not completely testing their software with all configurations, hence having so much bad rep from all over. If it's an XP or ME machine, you could also try to do a system restore to an earlier time.
More than likely though, the vid drivers have been messed up, so see if it will allow you to do a 'rollback' of them. Yuo can find that option in the vid card properties under the driver tab.

You can boot into Safe Mode. Safe mode uses a generic VGA driver with standard resolution settings. Then from Safe Mode you can set your screen to a working resolution. To get to safe mode, restart your computer and hit F8 repeatedly until the Advanced Option window appears and choose Safe Mode. Once it loads up change resolution as normal and restart to normal mode.

Hello to anyone who might be able to help. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 running on Vista. I recently had the Geek Squad provide support as my laptop was running very slow. They completed all updates and everything seemed fine. I then purchased a Logitech HD web cam and downloaded Skype. Now, every time I boot the screen resolution changes to 800 x 600 and I must go in and change it back manually. I have done a bit of research but am confused as to what the issue might be. I have completed all updates for Vista and the driver. I am only slightly computer literate and would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.
I saw this happen once on a customer's PC. He somehow managed to change one of his desktop shortcuts for Mozilla Thunderbird email.
The shortcut properties' compatibility tab was checked off for 256 colors @ 640x480 resolution. Every time he started Thunderbird, his resolution would change and then not change back once he got out of the program.
Maybe start with Skype. You have to right-click on the desktop program shortcut, select 'properties' and look at the compatibility tab for it, and then maybe for each program that starts automatically when Windows starts. I hope that's what it is and you find the culprit
when i start up the cpu i recieve an error message indicating that i have no disk in the drive and to insert a disk into drive\device
harddisk1\dr1 after bypassing the error by click continue my screen resolution decreases and lowers in quality. i may have removed a needed driver in trying to rid myself of a subseven rundll16.exe virus.
you will need to install up-to-date drivers and make sure you have default monitor (not VGA!) under Monitors in the Device Manager.
