Mouse cursor freezing every 10 seconds

Q: Mouse cursor freezing every 10 seconds

It seems like every 10-20 seconds, my cursor freezes in one spot for a split second, then it's fine. It's so repetitive, it's a nuisance and I can't finish up work I have to do on the computer. I'm really not sure what it is...switched USB ports three different times (USB laser mouse), so I'm clueless.

Here's my log:

Preferred Solution: Mouse cursor freezing every 10 seconds

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Ok this is getting REALLY frustrating!

For some reason my mouse cursor & functions are lagging behind by a few seconds. Even when I type sometimes it takes a few seconds for the words to appear. Hightlighting doesnt work right away and sometimes the cursor takes a few seconds to even appear.

Any ideas what this is at all & how to fix it?

It just started in the last day or so and I cant deal with this any more.

A:Mouse cursor & functions are lagging behind by a few seconds

Sounds like it may be memory. Take memtest86 and tell us how it goes.
http://www.memtest86.com/

You may also want to check graphics card and drivers.

Whenever there is an unexpected change, I always recommend a anti virus scan
and to
Download and run a scan with malwarebytes.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Since it is so easy, type cmd, in search. Then right click and run as administrator. Then in cmd type sfc /scannow

If available, try another mouse, too.

Well recently (about a week ago), my mouse has just been randomly freezing every 10 seconds - 10 minutes for about 3-5 seconds each freeze. This is really irritating considering that I develop a majority of programs in VB and C#, along with moderating several pretty big websites including my own.

I am not the only user of this computer. My brother and uncle both use this computer, although my brother is the one who tends to download various miscellaneous programs. The only reason he can't be held accountable for anything, though, is simply because he's been out of state for the past week. And all my uncle ever does is watch Naruto.

Nothing major has been downloaded in the last few days, just a few programs from that website I moderate, which I never even ran. I just downloaded them so they could be analyzed for the possibility of containing viruses. They're all run in emulated environments of course, and not actually on my computer. I mean, occasionally I'll run a program in sandboxie, but that's besides the point.

To be more precise about how my mouse freezes:

Randomly, about 30 minutes into running my computer, I'll be switching to a new tab in firefox, or loading a website, or something and my mouse will just freeze for about 5 seconds. Normally if something happened like that, I'd just dismiss it like nothing had happened. The only problem with this is that it's recurring. So once it starts freezing, it keeps going more frequently. Lately my HP Pavilion 750n (Windows XP as the OS, 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor and 768 MB RAM) has developed an problem of the mouse cursor freezing. This is accompanied by a click sounding from the tower and the HD light comes on. The computer completely locks up, so I can't determine what is causing this since pressing the CTRL-ALT-DEL keys are inoperative. I have to unplug the power, then re-start to get the mouse working again. I have MSE as the security software. Scans with this show no viruses. Any idea what's going on?

A:Mouse Cursor Freezing

The HP Pavilion 750n desktop is several years old, so it's a good probability the hard drive is failing.
The freezing mouse cursor and clicking sound from inside the tower reinforces that suspicion.

If the hard drive does need replacing and you don't have the original recovery disc kit available to install Windows XP, you can purchase it here.

Hi there,

My mouse cursor freezes once every ~30s for about 1~2s. It doesn't happen all the time, but I suspect it might happen because of the usage of postgreSQL, as I've seen 2 other people with the same problem who also used it.

I have tested another mouse, the problem persists. I've tried updating mouse/USB drivers as well, nothing helped.

My trackpad, however, doesn't stop working at any time.
Any ideas?

Thanks.

Interesting how when you tested another mouse the issue persisted, but it works with the trackpad. Are both mice you tried (non-trackpad) wired or wireless?

I've got a customer that has a computer he just bought from Dell a couple months ago running Windows 7 that will entirely freeze up for only a couple seconds, then its fine. if someone happens to be typing while it freezes it'll repeat the last letter you were pressing when you were typing before it froze and repeat it about 4-10 times.

So i've done a lot of crap to this computer, upgraded all the drivers I could find for this brand of dell computer, switched around to various USB ports, done various scans of all sorts, but I think the problem is a process taking up 100% cpu for a couple seconds then going away, because whenever there is a freeze I can see on the task manager "performance graph" that whenever there is a freeze there is a 100% cpu spike. I tried to use the task manager to find which process is using it, but because it freezes while the CPU usage is that high it doesn't SHOW that process, it shows what process is using the most CPU AFTER it freezes, so I can never actually find the process that using 100% CPU because it freezes the task manager for that period of time.

I need to find some sort of process graph that will show me what processes used the most cpu over a period of time and records it so I can go back and find it, if anybody has seen something that works like that i'd appreciate the info. Also, if anyone has any other ideas on what might be causing the brief freezing i'm open to ideas.

Thanks for your time!

A:Random keyboard and mouse freezing for 1-2 seconds, can't find the culprit!

There's a few advanced items for just that.

The first one is Process Explorer. No doubt as soon as you run this baby, you'll want to replace task manager with it (it has the option). It's essentially a very powerful version of the task manager, and details a considerable amount of anything going on in the PC. You wanna be looking at both CPU and Cswitch Delta columns. You may also double-click the graphs to bring a window displaying graphs for all performance monitoring. Get familiar with it, there's a lot more to gain from it.

Second item is Process Monitor. It's a capturing device for all registry, file and process operations. The resulting capture file can get big, so here's what you should do:

1. Close any and every program running you can, both background and foreground. The less running, the less activity in the capture file.

2. To test, since you said even typing stutters, try typing in notepad while it's stuttering. Note exact time of stutter right down to the second (open Windows clock).

When you've considered those two notes, open Process Monitor, it will start capturing immediately. Test with notepad and have it stutter a couple times (but at most 15 seconds of capturing). Stop capturing with the magnifying glass icon, then save to file (select "all events"). Compress (cuz it's gonna be beefy) into a zip/rar/7z/etc., and send it our way. Tell us the exact times of the stuttering so we can pinpoint any oddities during those time periods.

Hi Baggy2014,

Have you checked a different mouse on the system to isolate the issue? Also, perform a clean boot on the system to check the same:

Also, check the system under safe mode and let us know if it occurs there as well:

Hi.. I have had this problem for about a week now....
I have a sony vaio windows 7 IE 8 Laptop that I love and it is only a year old.
in the past 5 days the cursor on my logitech wireless mouse freezes. The only way to get out of it is ctrl. alt. del and it goes to my home screen and I cancel and the cursor comes back.. sometimes I go for hours and it doesnt
freeze and then sometimes it freezes every 5 minutes. there are times when I ctl. alt delete and it goes to my screen and I have to manually shutdown as even if I touch the pad on my laptop I cannot close it.. and of course when the cursor freezes
the screen freezes too.

Just to let you know that there is nothing wrong with my battery or mouse
as I have another one just like it and it does the same thing

I contacted Sony Vaio and they came in by remote and put in a patch
and said that should do the trick. but it did not...

any ideas....

do you need more info and if so what else would help in this situation.

I also play some games and that is when I most get this. and I have
the flash 102..... the latest version. and my java is uptodate.

I should also say that at times my IE8 says not responding.....

thanx Coco.

p.s.I have a friend who is very computer savy and comes in by remote
to fix things on my computer and this is stumping even him..

Since the issue I'm having is roughly equivalent to Windows itself hanging, I figured this would be the best place.
What is happening is that Windows freezes and I can't interact with anything on the screen. CTRL-ALT-DEL and CTRL-SHFT-ESC methods to try to bring up the task manager do not work. I am, however, able to move the mouse when this is happening, but cannot interact with anything. The only thing that returns my system to normal is a hard boot . Over a 2 week period, it has happened at an increasing rate, but my system has run completely stable for something like 5-6 years now. I formatted and reinstalled windows in hopes of a fix, but it's still happening.

It was okay for awhile but then all of a sudden it started working very badly now. One thing is norton 360 seemed to disappear from my computer. I got directions and uninstalled norton and then reinstalled it again, now the norton seems to be working okay.
But since then, the mouse cursor has been moving erratically, totally disappearing and freezing up the whole screen. The screen keeps flashing to blank screens or my previous screen for a few seconds and then coming back to the screen I am on. It is having problems restarting alot of times and sometimes I can not even do anything before it freezes. I have started it in safe mode with networking and still seemed to have the same problems. The mouse pointer was still moving erratically and not working well. Just in the time that I have typed this so far the screen has flashed to a previous screen 4 times.
I have run norton scans and I dont think it is finding to much but tracking cookies.
Any other help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Kim

A:computer freezing, mouse cursor disappearing or moving erratically

Hello Kim,,, may be having a hard drive beginning to fail or file corruption. I would recommend immediate backupo of important files in case. Probably not a malware issue. So I 'd run SFC and if you still hae trouble ask this in Vista and they can check your drive and other things. Please run SFC (System File Checker) Please run System File Checker sfc /scannow... For more information on this tool see How To Use Sfc.exe To Repair System FilesNOTE for Vista/WIN 7 users..The command needs to be run from an Elevated Command Prompt.Click Start, type cmd into the Start/Search box,right-click cmd.exe in the list above and select 'Run as Administrator'You will need your operating system CD handy.Open Windows Task Manager....by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESCThen click File.. then New Task(Run)In the box that opens type sfc /scannow ......There is a space between c and /Click OKLet it run and insert the CD when asked.

Ok, I just put this computer together for my mother in law and it's been randomly freezing, usually with a black screen and an oversized mouse cursor arrow. Once it had like 4 mouse cursor arrows.
This is what the even viewer says;
The Monitor Image service terminated with the following error:
A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed.

Google has been no help at all.
I think I may need update the video drivers but I'm not sure. I've been trying to download them since early this morning but the computer crashes before I can.

I purchased a A485 and worked well but quickly replaced Mech harddrive with SSD. After reinstalling windows 10 I noticed I loss the function of the backlit keyboard, as well as my mouse cursor kept freeze when using the Track point when I would use the middle button for scrolling. all drivers up-to-date and even tried reinstalling windows and drivers again...still have this issue the mouse freezing is the must fustrating since I primarily use the Trackpoint to control my mouse functions. I found that locking (windows + L) and login back in frees up the mouse again...but typically freezes shortly after pretty fustrating, especially when one of the main reasons I buy Lenovo is their trackpoint. I've seen people have similar issues but no resolutions in their threads.

I have a Windows 7 mutli touch device and every time i touch the screen i get a stupid mouse graphic. Its really annoying because it has a tendency to get in the way when i am tapping around with my fingers on the screen. I have been unable to find anything
about such a "feature" on the webs. As various combinations including "mouse" and "graphic" and "windows 7" are pretty vanilla search terms.
I am guessing it is some lame "accessability" feature but i have no idea how to fix. please help

A:mouse graphic (not cursor) next to mouse cursor when touching screen

That is called the Touch Pointer, its easy to turn off once you know where to look.
Click Start, type pen in the search box or open control panel aand click Pen and touch.
Click the touch tab and uncheck Show the touch pointer... then just click ok to  close the dialog and the ghostly mouse picture will be gone.

Good morning folks! I'm really hoping you guys can help me with this. I just bought a new laptop last week from CyberPower. It's got the quad core i7, 16GB ram,6GB video card, solid state drive, solid machine. But right from the start I've been experiencing 1-2 second pauses in all video and even right now while typing, or while scrolling through websites. I've tried 3 different browsers, I've updated flash, run several full system virus scans. This happens in every application, whether it's hulu, facebook, playing a fully downloaded file with media player. I'm completely stumped as to why my brand new, high powered system is performing so badly....PLEASE HELP!

For a few days now my Dell Inspiron has been lagging/freezing every few minutes for a couple of seconds.

It seems to be happening no matter what i'm doing on the laptop - playing music, playing a game and even when it's idle. The whole system freezes and if there is audio playing it makes a strange buzzing noise. Any video playing freezes and the mouse freezes too. It is only for 2 seconds at most and isn't effecting the running of the laptop, it's more of an annoyance.

I've run a full scan with Avast! and Malware Bytes. Malware came up clean, Avast! found a few low level things that have been deleted or moved to the chest/vault.

I've also run ChkDsk, which found a few errors and, i'm assuming, fixed them. I left it running over night as it took a few hours to complete.

Any help or advice is hugely appreciated!!

I'm having a problem with my cursor. Every few seconds it loads at random. Sometimes when I'm clicking a file usually an mp4 it doesn't even open it. I tried without my mouse (Windows Seven Lenovo) and it still won't open.

Also this problem might be gone but before when I opened microsoft word, the save function would randomly appear. I press escape but it would appear again and again.

I think it might have to do with ask.com appearing on google chrome but I thought I took care of it with malwarebytes.

Help would appreciated and thanks in advance for any help .

Also, when i went into task manager and tried to see what processes were running, the list kept changing as if something started to run and then stopped. Each time this happened the cursor loading icon would appear. How do i get this to stop?

Hi,
I'm new to this forum so this is my first question.

My curser keeps jumping to the same position on my centre(main) screen (I have three screens), every 60 seconds.

It starts by the blue circle appearing then the curser snapsto the same mid position on the screen. I have also noticed the wireless keyboardstops working for a few seconds at the same time.

I have half cured the by un ticking the ‘Snap To’ optionunder mouse properties/pointer options, now I jet get the blue circle and thekeyboard not working every 60 seconds.

I have been using the Microsoft wireless ‘Comfort 5000 Desktop’for about two months and got this problem six days ago after a Windows update.I then did a restore which resolved the problem for a day(ish) and them theproblem returned and further restores didn’t help. I have not done any further Windowsupdates since having this problem.

I have just reinstated my old wired keyboard and that isnot being affected by the second blip!

I hope someone can help?

Thanks,
Tim

This really sounds like a driver issue. You should re-install the drivers for the mouse. Completely remove the driver, and re-install if windows does not auto re-install for you.

Every 5 seconds, my mouse pointer switches to the busy icon (arrow with circle next to it). I have searched through several forums and can't find the solution to my problem. I have done a spybot scan, a windows defender scan, and tried a reboot with minimal services running but none of those have fixed the problem. I have attached a screen shot of my process explorer window showing the files that I believe are causing the problem, although I don't know how to resolve the issue. It appears that an instance of svchost and rundll32 are initializing every 5 seconds. These initializations coincide with the busy cursor signal. I don't see a path to the svchost source file or to the rundll32 source file location, but I have read that there should be one. I am unable to kill these processes. This problem has only been happening the last week or so.

The only change to the computer that I can think of is I installed a new mouse. I had a wire USB optical mouse. Now I have a logitech wireless USB mouse. Not sure if that is the problem or not. I haven't tried switching to a different mouse yet but I can't think of why a mouse would cause this issue anyway. I changed printers several months ago from an HP to a Brother.

A:Background Cursor Busy Every 5 seconds

Hi,

If you haven't already done so can you click on File and then Show Details for All Processes.  This should populate the currently empty fields if the processes are genuine.

While these processes are running can you hover the mouse pointer over them in turn.  In the information box that will appear, both svchost.exe and rundll32.exe should be in the path C:\Windows\System 32\.  If they are not then they need to looked at as suspect.  Also, in the information box it would be interesting to know what services are running under these processes.

Hi,
my mouse cursor- an optical usb - is stuck in the middle of the screen. The mouse works, as I can still scroll on a webpage with it, and click on icons, but the cursor won't budge. I've also tried a PS-2 mouse, same issue, and have tested every USB port and all work fine so it is NOT a hardware issue that I can see. I've tried rebooting and doing a system restore, and I have the same issue in safe mode. When I go to device manager, it rcognizes the device and says everything is working properly. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, nothing. Everything else seems to be fine on my PC. Any help will be most appreciated, thank you!

Is this a laptop or a desktop? What is the make and model# of your computer/motherboard?
Boot into Setup (Bios) go to Integrated Peripherals look for Legacy USB or USB mouse, if it is disabled, using the arrow key, Enable it. Save and Exit.
Go to the computer manufacturers support/download drivers site. type in your make and model # and download the Chipset driver (for USB Support)
Also, go to Start/Search and type CMD Right click the CMD results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type SFC /scannow and press enter. This will replace any missing or corrupted system files.

I think the problem is unrelated to the previous times tho since (its been over 6 months and nothing) nearly every or indeed every vital component has changed since then as well as new OS.

This problem is excruciatingly frustrating cos unlike other thing you cant really work around it and it ceases up work workflow constantly.

In my previous thread someone suggested it may be overheating but my temps seem ok at 39 idle.

I also checked for defragging the drive but windows 8 syas its doing that automatically every week and they are only on 1% fragmented.

I'm using Google Chrome and when loading theverge.com, my cursor consistently freezes for a few seconds before resuming normal movement later. What is causing such freezes?

A:Cursor freezes for a few seconds when loading certain websites.

Hello azurerush and welcome to Seven Forums.

I don't use Chrome so these are just some generalized suggestions for erratic/laggy cursor movement.

1. Try deleting your browsing history. Sometimes a problematic web pages is stored and that's the page that keeps getting reloaded.

Delete your browsing history - Google Chrome Help

2. Disable all add-ons and extensions. Re-enable one at a time and check cursor movement. See if cursor freezes with a specific add-on or extension.

3. Open Device Manager and check that mouse is working properly. If a laptop also check that synaptics touch pad is working properly.

   Tip
You can open Device Manager by typing devmgmt.msc into Start Menu SEARCH BOX and press ENTER.

Edit: Also, the mouse cursor sometimes disappears completely. My game performance has also dropped by around 30 fps.

I have a Macbook Pro which I have had about 6 weeks now. I run my access based program (brokerforce) with Windows 7 using Parallels. For the last couple of days when I am in my work software every 60 seconds the program automatically defaults to the first customer in my system no matter what I am working on. It is making it very difficult to complete any orders without this occurring. I tried talking with the technical support of the software and they thought it may be on the Parallels or Windows side. I spoke with Paralles technical support and they uninstalled and reinstalled the tools. I am just using the Paralles internet security which is powered by Kaspersky. I don't use any of the other windows programs just the work related software. This is getting really frustrating and I would like to be able to use my software like it is suppose to be used.

After I upgraded my from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, I began having trouble with my  cursor. It would blink for 10 seconds, enabling me to type, then disappear for 5 seconds. Then it would reappear and I could continue typing for another 10 seconds.  At the same time, my gray background at top of page would turn white simulateously with cursor disappearing, then return to gray when cursor reappeared.  I thougt a disk check fixed the problem.  But now, instead of cursor disappearing, it continues to blink, not enabling me to type.  I have to manually move cursor from touchpad and click in order to continue typing.  This happens whether I'm on gmail or on internet, typing usernames and passwords.  The background doesn't change now, and the cursor freezes, though it continues to blink, occurs every 10 seconds.  It won't continue until I move my  mouse cursor to text cursor space. My cooling fan also seems to run continously now, when it didn't before this problem  occurred.    Even playing a game is impossible, because it keeps pausing every few seconds.  I have tried all the advice on touchpad/mouse drive solutions. I've updated my drivers, although several, according to my Drive booster, won't update.   Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

A:few seconds black screen with cursor after windows logo

It's not abnormal to have a black screen before the login screen. 15 to 20 seconds is a little long if you're using an SSD, but during that time Windows is loading drivers and all of the stuff in your system tray.

Have you got a lot of programs in your system tray? Or set to load at bootup? Try using msconfig and setting all of the startup programs to off, except your anti-virus and see if that speeds things up.

Hi. The other day my mouse-cursor just started to move and wiggle, chaotically, and by itself towards the right side of the screen.. I have tried to switch mouse and unplug, but it doesn't help, so I figure it has to be some kind of virus or malware, yea? When it happened I installed Trend Micro Internet Security and ran a scan of my computer. It came up with one so called "generic Trojan" named "services.exe" located in C:/Windows AND one virus named "a.exe" located in C:/Windows/System32.

I went into the windows folder and found the trojan file "services.exe" to maybe try and delete it, dunno if I should've, but I was pretty aggrevated at the time, but anyway I couldn't because I needed "permission" from vista. I also looked up the virus file called "a.exe" in the system32 folder, where trend micro told me it was, but I could not find it in any searches.

Anyway, this is all very frustrating to me, because I use my computer for work, and obviously a chaotically, wiggly mouse makes it quite hard for me to do anything at all.. so I would highly appreciate some help with getting rid of whatever it is doing this!

Thanks!

Welcome to TSF hoofbite,

Noooo, you sure do not want to be deleting files you are not sure of, and especially those like "services.exe" which is usually an essential (and protected) system file. Not seeing any infection here so far - let's run a repair scan then check after.

To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform quick scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply.... Read more

Hi I'm having a problem that I really can't seem to resolve: the image of my cursor freezes about 5 seconds after I log in, but the actual pointer still works i.e. I can still use the mouse, it's just that the cursor doesn't correspond to what I'm actually pointing at. At first this occurred randomly, sometimes after 25-30 mins of use, but now it does it every time, straight away.

One way I've found to get around it is to turn on mouse trails at the lowest setting, this lets me see the trails of the cursor (at the correct location), which at least lets me know what I'm clicking on.

I've tried:
Removing and reinstalling the drivers
Trying a different (ps/2) mouse
Trying a different USB port
Removing spyware etc with Spybot, AVG
Updating to the latest drivers
Updating Windows (which is when it changed from being random to every time)

Any ideas on this one?
Thanks in advance! James
