Windows XP - Activation?

Q: Windows XP - Activation?

For my birthday this year, I was getting a brand new motherboard, cpu and ram. My old motherboard we had bought several years ago had been recalled due to problems (which we later found out after the return policy ended, so I have had to deal with my computer restarting itself automatically whenever it pleases for the last 5 years or so now). My dad took me up to Fry's Electronics (a 5 hour trip total there and back) because nobody else around here sells those sort of computer parts we needed. We bought the parts, came home and started putting things together only to find out the sales rep. sold us ram that wasn't compatable with the motherboard We had to turn around and go back up again that next day for another 5 hour trip in our 20 year old car which barely made it home to get the ram.... We got everything put together last night, and nothing will run properly with Windows ME now! Apparently, it was made for Windows 2K or XP. My modem kept coming up just as "PCI Slot" and apparently it didn't want to see it. The other PCI cards seemed to work fine. There were other problems as well when I tried to use ME (like the disk for the Drivers saying the OS is not supported so I couldn't install drivers for the motherboard) The mouse (wireless opitical) even died on me -_-

I figured I would give Win XP a try again and see how it runs on here now. In the past, every single time I tried to install it, the system would restart constantly during the setup, and when it finally get make it somewhere, XP crashed within a week or two and I had to format the entire drive and start over again. It did this 3 times before I gave up and stuck with ME.

I installed XP again last night and everything seemed to work well with the new hardware so far. I am worried though, that XP will crash again like it has done every other time. Somebody keeps telling me I have to "activate" it using an activation key or something. Is that true and how do I do that? I seen nothing mentioned in the paperwork about it. Could this be why it keeps crashing after a week or two?

Any information is greatful! I was hoping to get this computer straightened around before Sunday night. I work online from home and need to get this going before Monday

Thank you!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi there
I recently changed a MOBO from an INTEL based one to one using an AMD PHENOM processor -- W7 didn't want any new activation rather surprisingly. (Broken Mobo and I had a spare ASUS MOBO lying around).

However the first time I switched to using a LAN cable instead of a Wifi USB adapter I got the "Hardware has changed - please activate windows. OK it activated fine -- however seems strange to me that a MOBO change didn't call for any activation (Disks, memory, DVD device etc were canaballized from the old machine) but a simple switch from Wifi to a LAN did. !!! The internal logic of the activation process seems totally illogical and bizarre. (Running W7 x-64 ULTIMATE). !!!

Cheers
jimbo

I recently performed a system recovery because I was unable to back up to earlier time before we started having computer issues. Anyway I performed a recovery. Stumbled accross this by accident that windows has 3 days before it wall automatically activate. So I clicked activate. It gave me this message header. "The Windows Vista Home Premium product key you typed is invalid for windows activation". There are 3 options. 1 is to Buy a new product key online. 2 is to type a different product key. 3 is to contact Hewlett-Packard Company to resolve this issue. I contacted Hewlett-Packard Company and they had me call Microsoft. Microsoft wants to charge me $100 for something I already own. Very confused. Anyway does anyone have a fix for this. Thank you

A:Windows Vista Home Premium product key you typed is invalid for windows activation

Hi
You have two choices:
You may either reinstall using the recovery partition, if you have one.
or
You could look for the key on the computer. It can be anywhere, including the battery compartment, if you have a lappy.
As a last restort you can try to use magic jelly bean, but I have doubts since you reinstalled.

Hiya,

I am having a problem with my windows 7 home premium 64bit. I wiped my computer to try and get a new graphic card to work( never got it working, gave up and went back to my old graphic card) Since then I have had to wipe my computer a number of times, I kept having to wipe my computer since the same problem kept happening. Which is that my windows will crash and wont work after about 1-2mins after start up.

I thought it was my disk so I installed it from a usb windows installer and has been runnign fine for about 2 weeks until I was free to do the phone activation of my windows, I phoned up the activation after using my computer for a while then after I phoned and it came up genuine (like normal) I went to get a drink befor doing more work and once getting back to my computer I opened a new tab on firefox it was very slow on the internet so I clsoed my browser and tried to reopen it and but it woulnd't open windows has frozen completely so I pressed the restart button on my case and let it boot up and then it wouldn't let me do anything.

Does anyone have any idea of how come my computer seem to freeze and refuse to work once I use the windows phone activation?

A:Windows wont work after using windows 7 home phone activation

What makes you think it is the activation? Did you go click on "Start Button", right click on "Computer" and left click on "Properties"? When the screen comes up scroll down to the right bottom of the screen and you should see a "Genuine Windows Logo". If it says something different then there is an activation problem.

We don't want to install Windows 8 as of now to our office and we wanted to retain the Windows 7 Pro and Enterprise as our Operating System. Do we have a problem for Activation if we still insists to used Windows 7 Pro and Enterprise Operating System using the Windows 8 Enterprise 82 Licenses?

Thank you very much

A:Activation Windows 8 Enterprise VLK but wanted to install Windows 7Ent

There is no way you can use a Windows 8 Enterprise licence for anything else than Windows 8 Enterprise. You simply can not activate Windows with a product key belonging to another Windows version and edition.

With those licences you can install and activate 27 25 Windows 7, not a single more.

The first thing I tried after reformatting and doing a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 64 bit edition was to run windows update. I received the error code 80072EFD. Hi Gents,

Hope someone can help me here. I've been using a retail version of Win7 Home premium 64 for about 2 years now with no issues.

During that time I've reinstalled the product possibly 6 or 8 times. Excessive I know but when things start to go wrong I like to start fresh again. Anyway from memory the last 2 times I have had to use phone activation.

A couple of weeks ago I dropped my laptop and killed the HDD. Put in a new one and reinstalled Win. I've just tried to activate with no luck. I went to phone activation and being lazy I typed in my old code I had saved from last time.

Now I can't activate and when I try and open the phone activation box I get a pop up from the toolbar saying the copy isn't genuine and nothing more.

Is there a way to resolve this or have I pissed off the activation so much that I actually have to shell out for a new copy?

Thanks in advance and I'm located in Thailand if that makes a difference.

(2)should i first install windows 7 pro, activate it with the key and then clean install windows 10 and activate it with the windows 7 pro key

Thank you.

You can install W10 NOW and you dont have to activate it immediately, theres a 30 day grace period.
So when you get your W7 package you can activate it with the product key.

note your purchased W7 pro licence MUST be either System builder or retail or it will not activate

Hi, This is my first post. Was looking for a little help as im stuck.

My aunties laptop (an old advent q200)wouldn't boot, think the partition was corrupted, so I used partedmagic to retrieve her important files. I then formatted the drive and then freshly reinstalled windows 7 home premium.

During the setup process it didn't ask me for the windows activation code and it doesn't show any option for inputting it under computer/properties (where it should say product id or change product key). Ive tried slui.exe 3 but comes up with don't have correct permissions.

I cant use windows update yet as I need the correct drivers to connect to the internet. So im stuck and any advice would be great.

Hi Guys,

I bought a Sony Vaio (VPCEH) pre loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium a few years back and it recently had a HDD failure so I bought a new one and installed. The laptop didnt come with a disk copy of Windows 7, just the recovery partition on the HDD. Managed to get a vanilla copy of Windows 7 Home Premium and install that with the Key that came with the laptop. 90 days later, Windows said that it wasnt activated. Long story short, the Cert of Authenticity Licence Key isnt from Microsoft, but one Sony uses, although Microsoft have said that the key is genuine, Id have to contact Sony. Been in touch and they put me in touch with a supplier for the correct version of Windows for my machine, but they no longer stock it. So, bit stuck on my options.

All I can think is that I will need to buy a new key.

Do you guys know if I can still get Windows 10 upgrade with what is effectively a trail copy of Windows 7.

Any help appreciated..

Ian

A:Windows 7 Re Activation

Looks to me like you reinstalled WIndows using a retail disk or download, rather than the Sony recovery media.
To be able to do that, you MUST use the Product Key from the COA sticker, and not the one found using any kind of 'Keyfinder' application/program.
You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.
You may need to activate by phone.
If there is no COA sticker on the case, then as far as MS is concerned, the computer is not licensed to run Windows.

You may be able to buy a set of Recovery media from Sony which should work (the SLIC table appears to be present and correct so should activate the Sony Key properly when it's used with the correct installation media)

I recently had problems with my computer, and had to replaces my hard drive and memory. I therefore had to install Windows XP again. We have a few computers at home, each of which came with an XP recovery disk. I took one of these (it could have been from another computer - I'm not sure) and installed Windows again. I now have a countdown for my 30 day activation period. My problem is I dont have an internet connection on that computer, and am unable to activate. I researched this online, and the solution seems to be to back up the files wpa.dbl and wpa.bak from my previous sytem and replace them onto the new Windows. However, I only found this out now, and have therefore lost the old files. The old hard drive is corrupt and therefore cant recover them from there. Does anyone know of another solution and can someone provide me with those 2 files? Many thanks.

I have an Acer 5338 laptop which was purchased with Vista preinstalled. The deal included a free upgrade to windows 7. The computer was use for some time with Vista. I then partitioned the hard drive and dual booted the machine. I had mislaid the upgrade disks so used an alternative Windows 7 Home Premium disk and a product key which I obtained from Ebay. All worked OK for a time. Having found the upgrade discs I attempted to change the product key to the legitimate one from the Acer upgrade disc packaging. Every time I ckicked the "change product key" I got an error message. A few days ago there appeared a Windows 7 update message. So I performed a download and install of the 20 update items. I was then presented with a black screen and the message that my copy of Windows was illegal. This time the "change product key" option worked and I change the key to the good one. I was still unable to Activate. I rang Microsoft who checked the product key and told me that this was a full retail version key not OEM and I would need to reinstall and start from scratch. I do not wish to do this as I will lose all my installed programmes.
Can anyone suggest an alternative way of activating my legitimate software.

Hi

I switched on my computer and following happened-

A screen with the word Platinum comes up ( never seen this before) and in the bottom corner the words Press tab to switch to post or delete to enter bios. If you press tab the following message appears-

cmos checksum error - defaults loaded
Warning now system is in safe mode
Please reset overlocking features in setup menu.
Press F1 to continue or delete to enter setup.

If you press F1 windows XP logo appears and then the welcome page, after this the following box appears with Windows product Activation and the message-
This copy of windows must be activated with microsoft before you can log on.
Do you want to activate windows ? yes or no.
If you press yes then my screen saver appears but nothing else.
I have left the computer for a number of hours hoping something might happen but it just stays on my screen saver.
Any advice as to what i need to do to resolve this would be much appreciated.

cmos checksum error - defaults loaded

Something has changed in your Bios. Your CMOS battery may need changing.
Restart the computer and press the Del key to enter Setup (Bios)
In the Bios, set it to Failsafe Defaults. Save and Exit. The computer should load into Windows without prompts. If the clock on the computer is off, doesn't keep the correct time, you will need to change the CMOS battery on the motherboard.

also what is the difference between windows 7 beta 1 and windows 7 professional

A:windows 7 activation

Hello aP00rv, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Q1) These links below may be able to help with this activation error.

(Method F) Error message when you try to activate Windows Vista: "An error has occurred"

and

Let me google that for you

Q2) It depends on what type of Windows 7 you will have. A retail copy can be installed and activated on any computer, but must be uninstalled from any previous computer before installing it on another one. A OEM copy can only be activated on the same computer that Windows 7 was originally installed on, and no other computer.

Q3) Windows 7 beta was a Ultimate edition and not a Professional eddition.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

My downloaded copy of Win 8 pro using the key i was given works fine and installs fine and activates on a dual boot or also just on a single boot etc. I tried it also in a virtual programe but in this Win 8 needs to be activated and will not on the same key. Is this because it thinks the virtual machine is a different computer?

Also i have had to re-install windows quite a few times on my computer and have had no trouble with doing this and i was wondering How does it know my computer is the same one as i re-formated my drive before re-installing, As Windows 8 activation always seems to activate ok

Hope this makes sense
Thank You

A:Activation - Windows 8

Are you trying to run Windows 8 from within Windows 8? It would seem to me, that you would have to use a VHD of Win 8 MADE by MS for Virtualization, it would have it's own "activation" -But if you are using Windows 8 from within Windows 8 and trying to use the same Prod Key for Both - THAT will not work, One or the other will be de-activated. You can't have two Windows 8 on the same network using the same product key using the same Microsoft/Skydrive Login - Both will become deactivated, it's a licensing conflict.

I have recently had a msg saying my Windows 7 OS is not genuine on my 3 year old satellite[I have Norton firewall and Avast security].
I have a valid product code but Microsoft say I have to buy a new Windows OS at ?75 .

Has anyone else experienced this and what have you done about it??i

A:Re: Windows 7 activation

The question is: which OS version do you use?
If you use original OS version that you got with your machine (recovery image) product registration is not necessary.

Many people use original Microsoft installation disc and try to activate it with product key from Microsoft sticker placed on the bottom side of the notebook. This will not work. This product key belongs to the original recovery image ? version delivered with the notebook.

Have you installed own OS version on your notebook?

Hello Mir Tabraiz,

Sorry, but the Windows 8 Consumer Preview expired on January 15th 2013. You will no longer be able to activate it.

You'll need to either purchase Windows 8, or go back to whatever you had installed before.

how to get windows activation key

A:how to get windows activation key

This is actually a difficult question to answer since you do not provide context. By tghis I mean that you don't describe the situation. For example, do you want to activate a retail copy of Windows which you have installed and cannot locate the key? Do
you want to get the files plus a user license/activation code.

Have a look and give further details of your requirements.

Sorry if I'm breaking the terms.. Searched and couldn't find anything about this..

Years and years ago I built components for a computer and put it together.. Got a copy of Windows XP Home OEM..

A few years ago I bought an HP computer from Best Buy, Came with windows XP on it.

Recently, I decided to sell the HP To my friend. I decided to re-format it..

I haven't really reformatted and installed windows on a computer since I had been using windows 98 which was very simple and easy. I knew I had a disk with Windows XP on it and just wasn't thinking!

I reformatted, put in the OEM Windows XP disk in and installed it, got the the product key and the code on the actual HP PC did not work. Long story short, I had a product key for windows xp that came from HP and a windows XP disk that requires an OEM product key.

So I tried to figure this out for hours and hours and finally the only solution I came up with was.. sad to say.. a crack, a thing to bypass the activation thing.

My friend asked me to clean out her computer of junk slowing it down.. SO I went over and ran malware bytes, not thinking it detected the bypass thing and indentified it as a trojan and I got rid if it! restarted and now it wont let me on the computer unless I activate it!

I'm not asking for a program to let me bypass it anything.
I'm will to actually buy a retail version of XP and re-install it.

The only reason I havn't done this is because she has a lot of pictures she wants o... Read more

You should be able to take the drive out and attach it in place of a CD or DVD drive in a working pc to salvage the files.

What version of XP did the PC come with? . . Home, Pro or MCE?

If the Dell reinstallation cd matched the version on the sticker, it should have worked fine to reinstall. Otherwise, any retail version will work

Am I not allowed to put this program on all my computers? If not is there anyway to bypass this activation. $ 99.99 was ok for (3) computers but theres no way I'm going with $99. each. Any ideas?
