Laptop's usb randomly doesn't recognize drawing tablet

Q: Laptop's usb randomly doesn't recognize drawing tablet

Hi there,

I'm not sure if this is a hardware problem or not.
A friend of mine just got a new drawing tablet to replace her old one and she's having a problem now where if she opens a program to work with the tablet, for example Photoshop, the laptop will register the tablet as a mouse. Also Photoshop will sometimes crash on initializing. She has tried other art programs and the tablet is still acting as a mouse in those, so the Photoshop crash issue might not be related.

Sometimes the laptop will recognize the tablet properly, sometimes it won't. She tried reinstalling the tablet's drivers and it worked for a day or two and then started acting funny again. Even after a reboot or two.

Here's all the information I have:

She's using the tablet in the same usb port as the old one, she believes.
The new tablet is a Intuos 2 graphics tablet.
The old tablet I believe was also a Wacom much like the new one. (she still has the old one btw)
She's using a bamboo create pen on the new tablet.
She hasn't tried cleaning her registry yet.
She hasn't tried using the tablet in a different usb port.
Her laptop is an Acer Aspire AS7741Z-4815
All USB ports are reporting to be up to date and functioning fine.
We're thinking it's either the new tablet itself or the usb port it's in. I'm thinking it's not a physical connection issue because the laptop doesn't display a new connection message when the tablet starts working again properly, as if it wasn't connected and now it suddenly is. But, I could be wrong. Also the fact that the laptop is recognizing something being in there, but thinking it's a mouse rather then a tablet again makes me think it's not a hardware problem at least inside the laptop.
If you need any more info, just let me know. Any advice would be awesome, thanks!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi Lenovo community, I just got a drawing tablet. It's a HUION Kamvas (like a Wacom Cintiq). It connects via USB for tablet functionality (perhaps the Kamvas output) and HDMI cable for the graphics screen function to turn on. I can't get the tablet to project the Yoga laptop screen or get a dual screen. In the settings under "display", I couldn't get the tablet to connect via Bluetooth, or in any other discoverable way. I can't fix this through the HUION driver settings or reinstalling it. I've called LENOVO customer support and they said in order for my tablet to work, it needs to be an external monitor. I think the tablet is an external monitor through an HDMI connection. The tablet buttons and pen work alright because of the USB connection, but I bought this for the 'drawing on the tablet screen experience". The pen that I have for the Yoga is alright for quick sketches and notes, but I need the buttons and HUION drawing functionality. All I need to know is if there is a way to get the HDMI to project onto my tablet. Any advice would be helpful since I've out exercised my creative tech support juices! If it's all for not, then oh well, I'll just try another tablet. Thanks!

Hello Guys,

I'm really conflicted here. and I can't seem to find any answers anywhere....

I don't know whether I should buy an official drawing tablet...or if I should buy this one Android tablet that I've wanted for a long time and just draw on that.

I'm thinking about the Samsung Galaxy Note . And it has some good drawing apps on it and the S pen would be nice... I just wanted to know if anyone else had experience with doing this, and if so, how do you like it?

Of course, I wouldn't use the Samsung tablet just for drawing...but I don't know if I'm willing to buy an actual drawing tablet...I don't know if I'm dedicated enough.

I heard that XP-Pen Deco Pro Drawing Tablet supports connection with Android 6.0 and above devices . Does anybody have experience with it .

Just...what do you think?

Ok, I'll try to keep this fairly short and understandable...

So I got a new computer thrown together, and upgrade from my last one, and everything has been working fairly well. Ran into a few problems here and there, as there can be with computers built from scratch, but there is this one thing that isn't making any sense to me.

I've been busy re-installing all of the programs that I like to use, like Photoshop CS2, and I am trying to install my Hanvon 5*6 drawing tablet.

Now, I thought everything would be fine and dandy, seeing as all my other USB ports were working just fine, considering that I was able to transfer files from a flash drive and portable hard drive, but when I plugged in my tablet, an annoying bubble keeps popping up over and over and over again saying that the "USB Device is not Recognized" and all this nonsense about the device has malfunctioned.

I know well that my tablet is working just fine, because I plugged it into my brother's computer and it found the tablet like it should and installed it and worked just fine after installing the drivers.... So, why should my computer not recognize the tablet ether?

In short, my computer refuses to recognize my tablet, but it can use other things, like portable hard drives, flash drives, and my keyboard, just fine without complaining, (Note that my tablet fine works on other computers) and I have the tablet drivers installed and everything.

Anyone have a solution to this problem... Read more

I have a fifteen inch XP-Pen Artist 15.6 ( I buy it from https://www.amazon.co.uk/Artist15-6-1920x1080-Graphics-Drawing-Battery-free/dp/B0785682VP ). I want to use it for drawing (love to draw people, nature, animals and sometimes abstract), graphic design and editing photos. I do want to have accuracy. I've read that small would be good because it all depends on the screen size in comparison to the actual tablet, but I've also read that you can get more accuracy with a slightly larger tablet. such as XP-Pen Artist22E ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/Artist22E-Graphic-Interactive-Shortcut-Adjustable/dp/B01M28DHOA )I don't mind moving my hand a bit for accuracy. I've called best buy and all they say I cannot test the tablet, but I can buy it and return it if its not to my liking.

I'd really like to test it out however to choose. I've used small tablets before and recall having to do some zooming in for nice detail on the 15 inch. I no longer have one and would like to find the best fit. I guess I could be leaning toward either whatever is truly the best fit for me. I want to create beautiful works of art and to eventually do it professionally.

Let me know what you think is the best solution in this case. Thank you so much!

Hello there

I've recently ran into a really annoying and to me, worrying, situation in which plugging in my drawing tablet to the front USB sockets manages to freeze my PC. Right as I plug it in there's just no response whatsoever. I haven't had that issue before with the same tablet and as far as I know there weren't any driver updates to it (pretty sure I'd have to do that manually anyways). My PC specs are posted below, the tablet is a Huion H420. I thought the issue was with one specific USB port, as they have in the past sometimes (quite randomly I've felt) gotten "overloaded" or something like that, but trying others I just got the same issue and the crashes require hard resets, which I believe I've seen aren't good for the hardware's health, so I'd really like to resolve the issue. I'll gladly provide any info that's needed.

Hello everybody, first of all i'm new in this forum and this is my first post and my english is not the best

I recently installed Vista ultimate x64 (previously i used xp sp2 ) because i upgraded to 4gb of ram and xp doesn't recognize more than 3gb of ram.

I'm a digital artist and i heavily use graphic tablet ( Genius MousePen 8x6 ) for drawing in Photoshop CS3. I found x64 drivers for the tablet and i installed them and everything appeared to be ok.

But when i draw for example a simple line, there is a delay to appear the line on screen. I mean delay in miliseconds, but is very annoying and it makes difficult to draw.

In XP this was not happens, the line appeared in real time.

I noticed when i plug the tablet that there is an annoying window called "Tablet PC Input Panel", this could be the problem ? If yes how do i disable it ?

Or perhaps a hardware problem ? my cpu is Core 2 Quad q6600.

Thanx in advance!

HELP! I have a really old tablet and a really new computer, and they aren't playing well together. Everything seemed to be plugging in alright and the little light on the top of the tablet is on, but it won't work. It responds to the pen touching it, but nothing happens onscreen. The newest driver I can find is for Windows 7. Is there a trick to get it to work? PLEASE HELP!

I have literally tried every single thing I can think of. I've had two computer technicians try different things, I've contacted Monoprice support, and nothing is working.

I recently (within the last week) bought a Monoprice MP1060-HA60 (PID 6814) graphics drawing tablet. The pressure sensitivity works but after an undetermined amount of time (can be anywhere from a few seconds to 10 minutes) the tablet stops controlling the mouse. The light on the tablet still lights up when the pen makes contact. I'm wondering if anyone else in the community has had this issue and found something that works?

I've tried the following:
- Installing the drivers from the CD. Uninstalled and reinstalled several times.
- Installing the drivers from the website. Uninstalled and reinstalled several times. There are two versions.

- Installing the Legacy drivers from the UC-Logic website (this worked for a few seconds before causing the tablet to freeze.) Uninstalled and reinstalled several times.
- Installing Photoshop CC 32-bit (since I run a 64-bit system.) Nope.
- Installed an older version of Photoshop (CS6). Works for a few minutes before stopping.

- Tried running Photoshop 64-bit and 32-bit both in compatibility mode with the tablet. Nope.
- Tried messing with all of the settings, nope.
- If I go into Brush Preferences > Shape Dynamics, there is an exclamation mark by the "pressure sensitivity" setting saying that Photoshop needs a pressure-sensitive tab... Read more

I just this morning installed my drawing tablet on this computer and I got this error about 5 minutes into using it. That's the short story.

The long story, however, is that this is my 13th BSOD since I installed a new HD into this laptop and reinstalled the version of Win7 I had. The difference is that this BSOD is the first one I've got that's not a 7A error and that's actually created a dumpfile. It's something of a revelation for me, but it doesn't appear to be at all related to the BSODs I've been suffering to date. Basically, I don't think this means that my old BSODs will suddenly be making dumpfiles for me too. I am curious whether there might be something in the attached dumpfile zip that tells me more than just the basics of what caused this particular BSOD and might help explain my others. That's for someone who know what they're looking at to determine though. For now, it would be helpful to get a solution to this specific BSOD and then I can work on the BSODs that have been bothering me until now.

Here's a link to my original thread addressing all the BSODs I've suffered previously if that info is of interest to anyone and could perhaps help here...

I've had this laptop for a couple of years now. It started as windows 8.1 and then I upgraded it to 10. I don't remember the issue occurring before I upgraded it.

I've been using mice on this laptop regularly, and each time I use them, they slowly get less and less responsive as time goes on, and eventually they stop working altogether. This isn't a matter of batteries running out, since I tried replacing batteries in the wireless mice and they still wouldn't work. The problem occurs for both wireless and wired mice. Other devices like my mirophone which go into the USB port work, it's just mice as far as I know. The mice work on other computers.

A day or two ago, my newest mouse (logitech g206) was already acting up, but right after the new Windows 10 forced update, it immediately stopped working altogether and I started receiving error messages whenever I plugged in the connector piece, saying something along the lines of "USB malfunctioned."

As far as I know, all of my drivers are up to date. Below are images from when I tried to find what was wrong with the USB driver

I have a Hp Pavilion dv7-3180. It is about 2 and a half years old. Today when I turned it on, it said that I was on battery power and not plugged in even though it was plugged in. I unplugged it and plugged it back in, it still says it is on battery power. I unplugged it, used it on battery power for a little while. Battery charge went down to 88%, I plugged it in, it still says it isn't plugged in and battery is NOT charging, but it DID charge the battery to 100%. So my laptop is getting power and charging battery from being plugged in, but the display in the lower left hand corner doesn't recognize that it is plugged in.

I recently tried to install a Kodak Phe rinter on my laptop however when I was installing the printer the Laptop crashed and gave me a BSOD.

I unplugged everything re-booted the laptop and still got the BSOD. I was able to solve this by doing a simple system restore under safe mode.

So far so good......however...

Everytime I try to plug in a USB device into either of my 2 USB ports windows says that the device has not been recognized and is malfunctioning and windows has stopped it.

There is clearly power going through the ports as if I plug in Wireless adapter the light on the device comes on.

I have checked under the Device manager and it shows that the hardware is working properly
I have checked in the registry and the USB ports are set to "3" under the start option which means that the USB should start as normal.

My laptop is an aspire 5532 running windows 7 home premium.

Just wondering if I have missed anything out somewhere

thanks in advance

A:USB doesn't recognize devices on laptop

Hey odriscoll27. I assume your USB ports were working before you tried installing the Kodak printer. Do any USB devices now work in any ports?. Don't connect that printer to any other pc until you find out what caused this. I would first try uninstalling the ports in Device Manager, then reboot and let Windows reinstall the drivers and hopefully it will work. If it does work, check/try another printer cable and try installing it again. Is your Win7 OS at the SP1 level?.

Welcome Trejo24, Thank you for the product details.  I would first recommend you restart your laptop to see if this fixes the issue furthermore to test the connection by plugging in an ethernet cable. I would ask that you goto "Device manager" , This can be done by clicking "start" and typing "device manager" and check for any warning signs. if you require any drivers they can be found here. Look forward to hearing your response. Kind Regards, ShineyhawkzIT Technician

I have a Dell Latitude D800 laptop that's about 3 1/2 years old. It no longer charges or even recognizes that it is plugged into the wall. Luckily, one of my roomates has the same laptop so with some experimentation, we were able to figure some stuff out. My battery and AC Adapter are fine, his computer acts completely normal and even charges my battery when using them both. My computer runs normally except for the fact it only runs off the battery.

I unknowingly ran my battery all the way down; it would not charge. I put the battery in his computer, charged it, and now my computer can continue to run off the battery. I was told by a friend that there was probably something wrong with the power supply on the motherboard. I just wanted your input before seeking repairs so I know what to expect. Do you think the repairs will be lengthy/expensive? Do you think I'll be able to find a place to repair this Dell laptop without having to mail the laptop to Dell? FYI: my warranty expired about 6 months ago. Thanks and happy holidays.

A:Dell laptop doesn't recognize it's plugged in

Its possible the jack on the back of the laptop is broken where the adapter plugs in, that commonly happens. If thats the case it may just need to be re-soldered on or the jack be replaced. That shouldn't be a very expensive replace. But if its something else then it likely won't be worth fixing, ie. the motherboard.

Anyway, it won't run certain programs, including iTunes and much of MS Office, and no matter how often I try to reinstall, they still won't work, saying "The side by side configurations are incorrect."

What I want is to restore it to factory settings - all my data is safe and backed up. But when I put in my recovery disks (and they are the highest boot priority in BIOS) the system loads from the hard drive as normal. When I remove the option to boot from the hard drive, my system won't book at all, telling me to restart or insert an appropriate disk. And when I boot from the disk and try to manually run it, by clicking ETFSBOOT, it tells me that "The version of this file is not This version of the file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or an x64 (64-bit) version of the program."

I have double andtriple checked this - my system is 64-bit. My disks are 64-bit. As far as I can tell, the computer got scrambled during the automatic update and now part of it thinks it's 32-bit (some of the programs are divided into 32-bit and 64-bit sections). A:Can't reinstall windows - laptop doesn't recognize disks.

Try asking ASUS for a Windows disc. It should cost less than buying one retail.

Hey TS world. I was given a Gateway laptop model # ML6714. The old owner told me that they was having problems with it and that I could have it. I'm trying to install Vista OS and it's telling me that I don't have a hard drive installed( or something to that effect). Can someone help me with this problem. I have a WD 160gb hard drive installed. Not sure how to fix this. Thanks in advance for all the help.

Are you sure the hard drive hasn't failed?

I'll try to be brief.
1st, I didn't see a topic dealing exactly with my problem. So here goes.
I bought an Inspiron 15 laptop w/o an OS, and the optical drive didn't work. The seller made me aware of this and said I needed to buy an external optical drive to install Vista. He gave me the Vista install/repair disk (and the drivers disk).
While I was waiting for the optical drive to be delivered I loaded Ubuntu from a disk I had made. Don't ask me why the Linux disk would work using the internal drive but the Vista disk won't. Baffling.
So I recieved a new external optical drive and went to work on installing Vista over the Linux OS. I erased the Linux 1st. Then tried to install Vista, but no matter what I did (changing the boot order etc) the laptop doesn't "find" or "see"an OS to install. In other words I can't boot it up with the Vista OS disk using the external drive.
I can provide any details you may need. Fortunately I also have a desktop computer to work from.
Thanks in advance.

A:Laptop doesn't recognize external optical drive...

Things to check;
1. The Vista install disk is almost certainly a DVD disk.
2. The Linux disk is probably just an ordinary CD (you would know).
3. Modern ODDs have 2 lasers, one for DVD and one for CD.
4. It's possible for the DVD laser to fail, but the CD laser will work fine. This explains why the Linux CD would load, but the Vista disk won't.
5. So, since the internal ODD loaded the Linux disk, but not the Vista disk, then the DVD laser has failed on the internal ODD. If you replace the internal ODD with a new one, you should be good-to-go.
Now, regarding the external drive;
1. Is it a DVD drive? If not, it needs to be.
2. Is it externally powered, or does it get it's power from the USB port? It needs to be externally powered, because USB power is notoriously finicky for heavy load operations.
To summarize... the ODDs need to be DVD capable to load a Vista disk.

System: Win 7 Home, SP1 with latest update.
Hard Drive: Seagate 3 TB external hard drive. Automatically turns on, no power switch.

Here's the problem. My external hard drive no longer wants to play nicely with my laptop, or vice versa. Now, I have my mouse plugged into one of the USBs, (doesn't matter which one, I move it around) and it works fine. Flash drives, same thing, no problem. Same with both of my game controllers. Never a problem.

I go to plug in my external hard drive, and either it will come on for like 60 seconds and then go away, or it doesn't come on at all. However, if my husband plugs in my external hard drive to his computer, which, by the way is the exact same as my computer, both laptops of the same brand and model, it comes on within 10 seconds and stays on.

My external hard drive USED to work on my laptop just fine. And, my smaller (1 tb Iomega) external hard drive works great on this laptop.

So, what did I inadvertently change to make my laptop no longer wish to speak to my external hard drive? I'll bet it's something really simple.

Any help at all will be greatly appreciated, and not argued with in the least!! I promise! (my husband is making me say that. LOL)

Thank you!!

I have two P-III Dell Latitudes which I used for several years, and now would like to remove various files (music, e-mails, etc.) for my files. They use Windows 2000 for the OS, and have USB 2.0 software, and Service pack 4 or 5 windows updates. But the laptops will not recognize either flash drives (2, 4 or 8gb) or external "backup" hard drives, when I plug them in to the USB port. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the USB software, with no luck.

What am I doing wrong, here??

Most older laptops have usb ports that do not supply enough milliamperes for some usb devices, not sure if this is your issue or not. Try a usb hub that has its own power supply.

I have Lenovo 300-15ISK Laptop. Since one week ago my Windows 10 doesn't recognize the wireless driver, just ethernet. I checked the linux command 'lspci' and verified the name of the wireless driver. I don't know whatelse I can do more. Anybody can help me?Thanks a lot.

I removed malware/spyware via exterminate-it (after a week of frustration) and my Dell laptop recognizes the wireless connection, but will only allow me on AOL (with limited web access - email and a few sites, but nothing allowed with passwords or downloads). I had been using Internet Explorer, and installed Mozilla to try to generate a connection; both cannot connect. Aol coes up with a prompt with a software problem, and deug shuts it down (I tried re-installing AOL, but that is one of the downloads that can' connect to internet).
The computer is a Dell Inspiron B130 (Windows XP Pro), connecting to a linksys router (other family laptop works fine, had spyware removed as well). Very much a computer novice, so plain language would be appreicated.
Thank you, and, the obligatory, "Help"

I just got a new Envy 15t laptop with Windows 7 Pro and have been trying to install the driver for my wireless HP Photosmart D110a. When use the HP tool to search for my products, the laptop finds the printer, which I select and go through the process of downloading the driver. During the "Checking System" step, I get a message in a pop-up window called  "System Requirements Results" that says: "This computer does not have the necessary USB Software Support to allow completion of a USB Installation. Cannot continue until resolved." I have also tried downloading the driver from the HP site, but it doesn't work. I have also tried to install it using the USB connection and it installed all the components except the driver. A Photosmart printer shows up in my devices but I can't delete it. I have restarted the computer and tried again but it still doesn't accept the driver. I don't have the original disk either. We have 2 other laptops and an iPad that all print from the Photosmart D110 so the printer is working. Any suggestions?

Hi @tootles4, Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support Forums! I see that you're unable to install the HP Photosmart D110 Printer on your new HP Laptop. I would be more than happy to assist you. It sounds like there is a  problem with the Universal Serial Bus (USB) controllers, therefore, the printer will not install or remove from the device list. When you got the new computer did you download and install all of the current HP Drivers for your computer?First, unplug the USB cable for the printer. For resolving issues with Universal Serial Bus (USB) controllers, please click here to download and install the Intel Chipset Driver. For all of the available driver updates, please go here. Once you have updated the drivers, reboot the computer. If the issue persists, please use this guide to help determine the problem with the USB controllers:HP PCs - Troubleshooting USB Connections (Windows 7)NOTE: Connect the USB cable for the printer, only when the installation prompts you to connect it.If the issue persists, please download and run the Print and Scan Doctor, it will likely diagnose and resolve the issue you are experiencing. What were the results when you ran the Print and Scan Doctor (did it print or scan, any error messages)? Please remember to return to this thread and mark 'Accept as Solution', if I have successfully helped you resolve the issue. I'm still trying to fix my sister's laptop (more out of sheer determination at this point). I gave up on trying to fix the black screen problem and on trying to get to her files, and did a full Factory Restore... Vista booted up perfectly after that...and then I tred to get online.

Here's what I know: The wireless adapter is enabled (when I press "F2" a little icon pops up with an antenna with waves coming off of it, so I know it's on). When I run the connection utility, it says "Windows cannot find any networks", but my network is fully operational and I am connected to it on my computer, laptop, cell phone, playstation, and tivo, so I know the signal is working. I ran a diagnostic on the adapter and it passed everything, so from that I can see that the computer recognizes it and it is functioning. I also tried to update the driver but still had no luck.

Any other ideas? I'm still floating with the idea of wiping vista and using my OEM CD to install XP, but I want to make sure the thing is functioning properly first. Any suggestions are appreciated.

A:Dell laptop w/ Vista doesn't recognize wireless network

Hi liguy,

OK, on the laptop:

1. In Network and Sharing Center, is Network Discovery turned on?

2. In Manage Network Connections, are there any other connections shown besides your wireless? Any with a red X; if so, disable it.

3. If the above is all OK, open a command window (Start, Run, type Cmd in Open: Box and click OK). In the command window type ipconfig /all (space between g and /, no space after /), right click on window, click on select all, right click on window icon at top left, select edit > copy, and paste result in your reply.

Please let us know one way or another.
