Full Screen Gaming - Full Lockup

Q: Full Screen Gaming - Full Lockup

For some reason, starting this morning, any time I open a game in full screen mode, I get a full freeze. No mouse movement, Ctrl+Alt+Del / Ctrl+Shift+Esc / Alt+F4 / Alt+Tab do nothing, and the ultimate test, toggling capslock doesn't change the light on the keyboard. Only a hard reboot remedies the problem.

I'm convinced it's not a video card issue simply because if I start the same games in windowed mode, they run perfectly fine. I updated to Catalyst 10.10d yesterday, but the problem didn't occur until today, so I'm not entirely sure if they are related. Google's turned up nothing, at any rate, and I don't want to go through the effort of a full driver wipe until I'm sure it's the problem.

Something that troubles me a little: Fallout New Vegas randomly started detecting my Radeon 3870s as a GeForce 7900. It did not do this originally. Fallout 3 and Oblivion still detect it properly, however.

This problem happens in all games I've tried, across multiple engines, including several Source games, several Gamebryo games, and a few other random games. This is not a BSOD issue, it simply freezes with a black screen. My drivers, DirectX and Windows are all completely up to date.

Edit: Forgot to include customary dxdiag info.

Preferred Solution: Full Screen Gaming - Full Lockup

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Full Screen Gaming - Full Lockup

Remove your video drivers, then install a fresh copy. If that doesn't help, please provide these reports even though you're not having BSOD's: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f217...ns-452654.html

When I play a video in full screen it locks up after 30 seconds. I can escape to normal screen and the video plays fine again. Any Ideas ? Thanks.

Do you know if there is anyway i could play a game without the full screen feature? I want to do other jobs on the side without having to exit full screen so i save time.

A:Gaming without Full Screen

most games have a fullscreen option (unchecking it is the way forward ) if not you could always try changing it in properties (right clcik the .exe ((launcher)) and you can alter it there)

depending on the game though you will loose alot of fps (frames per second) playing in windowed mode , what about alt/tab to minimise the game instead?

Hello all. I am new to the forum and although I made an attempt to standardize this post and avoid inconvenience please excuse any such thing.

I am running XP Home.

I have a GeForce 8800 GTX with drivers downloaded from NVIDIA today and installed after a driver cleaning using driver cleaner pro.

I have an Intel Core 2 Quad 6600 @2.4GHz

I am certain that I am not overheating. My cooling tower is excellent and my motherboard monitors the heat. It's nowhere close to overheating. I'm not overclocking by the way.

Present issue:

I have been running Everquest II on this machine with no problems for about a month. Today it began presenting the BSoD when in full screen mode. The game still runs in a window.

I have scanned for viruses and found none. I have eliminated each of the 43 bits of spyware on my machine using spybot and have immunized with spywareblaster.

Attached you will find my dxdiag, msconfig, activescan text (from the panda activescan) and the zipped content of my minidump folder.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

A:BSoD with full screen gaming

Your problem is related to the ASUS enhanced video drivers. Uninstall them. See HERE.

Hi all,
Been having a few computer troubles, last couple of days. Up until now, I have never had a computer crash since building my machine. Occasionally I've had to force-quit a program, but never random crashes.

I've had 6 in the last day or so, though. And none of them have happened with a BSoD. The last one to happen was while watching a movie. I Ctrl+Alt+Del'd and it got stuck showing a message "preparing security options..." with the time-circle(?), but never progressed past that point.

They all seem to happen at random, regardless of what I do. When playing full-screen games, watching full-screen movies, or even just sitting idling. I've tried updating my MOBO BiOS, my gfx driver, tried taking out and setting the RAM again, and even ran a full-system scan with both anti-virus and with CCleaner.

I'm afraid I'm not sure what I should do.

I tried to upload the files from the SF_Diagnostic_Tool, but got a message saying I didn't have the correct Security Token?

I've combed through Google search results for an answer but haven't found anything that helps. I'm currently running two screens on an NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT and have a few full screen games. Warhammer Dawn of War Dark Crusade works fine, a barrier appears most of the time that prevents the cursor moving to the second screen, so I can hit that one pixel column that activates the scroll over the map.

Half Life 2 also works okay, because the cursor is always centred and moving the mouse moves the screen instead.

However, I pulled out Rise of Nations not too long ago, no barrier. The only way to fix it is to disable the second monitor. Which is a hassle, it's set up with a heap of icons and a few widgets that need moving over first, then moving back when I reenable it.

Oh well, I don't play that game that often. Though we recently got Spore, which has a similar problem. I'm not worried that it can flick over to the other screen, the problem is it won't move back. Which means a minimise of the game then a restore. Or I could go through and disable the second monitor. Blegh.

Is there some sort of program that will force the barrier every time I run a full screen app, or something I can set up that the mouse won't cross?

A:Dual monitors and full screen gaming

There's an option through ntune to make sure you dont get those lag and flickers.

My computer goes black at seemingly random points during gaming.

I checked to see if it was overheating with a log post (that exceeds the limit of .txt-files, thus I cannot attach it). As far as I can see there is no problem there. My best guess would be the graphic card driver, but updating them seemed to have no effect last time I did it (just got back from vacation, updating again as I post).

Any help would be very velcome!

Ya, I use steam as well for my games, The Valve games are constantly being updated and that means you have to do the same for your drivers, try getting the newest one for your video card and see what happens. Remember to restart if you install the new one. And go to the manufacturer's website, not windows update. If you have the newest one, just download and install again. Always fixes it for me.

Hey guys, So i have dual monitors, Im playing Age of Conan on my main, full screen. My second monitor is for Forums, Internet, Chatting, whatever else. When I click on my 2nd montior to respond, or to post something, my main monitor, full screen Age of Conan minimizes. Is there any way I can not make it minimize without putting Age of Conan in a windowed mode? Thanks for your help guys!

A:Gaming full screen, but Minimizing when I click on 2nd Monitor

you'll probably need to adjust either your mouse settings (I think there is a workaround for Logitech mice) or else edit a resource file in the game so that it allows the mouse to go out of game without minimizing the game - but I haven't heard of a way to do that thus far.

I freshly reinstalled my windows 7.
before and after the install,
when I watch videos on youtube.com (that's the only example atm),
the videos play great, flawless framerate, no matter the quality.
but they will randomly lockup. pause. only while in fullscreen.
high speed internet, videos have completed downloading, streaming speed isn't the issue.

if i press ESC to the video minimizes to a smaller display and works flawlessly,
if i press full screen again, the video continues flawlessly, untill 5 or 10 seconds later,
no specific time, they may more may not pause again.

no other system annoyances that i can recall.
i tried updating divx, although Ive never had to install those to watch youtube.

any ideas what could cause full screen video lockup?
ESC and a refullscreen instantly solves the issue, but i have to do it a few times throughout some videos.

reinstall java maybe? seems like I had to install java to watch youtube. i forget.

A:full screen youtube video lockup (soft soft)

I would make sure my Java script was OK. Do you run Trend A/V by any chance. This can block Java! What's you broadband speed? Does this happen at all times of the day or only at specific times?

evening all,

I recently bought a new laptop intel i7 8750h @2.20ghz (12CPUs) ~2.2GHz windows 10 home 64 bit with a nvidia rtx 2060 and everything was working perfectly up until a few days but now while gaming(total war) the screen will flicker and either freeze, turn black or CTD.30 seconds later even if I have exited the game the fans will run at full speed and then ill get a bsod with a video dxgkrnl fatal error message.it happens at certain points in the game which makes me think its not overheating or it would be more random? its also only 2 weeks old.when I restart laptop occasionally nvidia will give me a "you are not currently using a display attached to a montitor" error

ive tried reinstalling both the intel graphics driver and nvidia and reinstalled windows and the games aswell to no avail.

i dont think tis a factory problem as some tiems they work fine but sometimes they crap up.

like for instance, when starting my pc, on the vista login screen...half of the screen loads then a second later the other half loads (vertically)

also when loading a game say im waiting int eh loadign screen,
my screen blacks out for a second the loads... that isnt normal.
or another symptom.. if i minimize, everything becomes dark gray adn you can see some of the game graphics stuck on the screen

etc.. jsut plain error

im not sure what the problems is.

Okay, I've cleaned every component with compressed air on removal from my case and fitted them into my new HAF 922 (my god the breeze from the top fan is going to give me a cold!)

I put everything in according to the motherboard manual and had a friend who'd done a full build to help me. We ran into a few minor small issues with the front panel sockets and had to reseat the cables on a few components as we were getting zilch out of the computer, but it boots fine and posts every time.

We fitted a new Coolermaster TX3 CPU Cooler (those clips to put the fan on are the most irritating thing I have ever come across, and the smug youtube guy fitting them with one hand didn't help matters). Put a small dab of thermal compound on and seated it.

The problem arises almost at random. I can play COD4 for close to 20 minutes at 125fps and then my screen completely locks any form of input or movement, about 5 seconds later my screen goes black for another 5-10 seconds, and then comes back on and I'm straight back to 125 fps!

Since you're seeing the graphics card come back to life - I would have to suspect problems with it, despite the results of Furmark. Maybe try another video stress test? http://www.google.com/search?q=video...ient=firefox-a

For new builds - unplug and carefully replug every connection in the case. I had this problem for years!

Double check everything with the video card. Leave the side of the case open and see if that helps. Point a house fan at the video card and see if that helps. When it freezes/shuts down, see if you can see the fan on the video card - did it stop before the shutdown?

After you found the one drive in the RAID array faulty, did you reinstall Windows on the sole remaining drive?

The problem:
Computer freezes (Screens are frozen in place, no inputs, all processes stop). Recovery is by hard reset.

The System:
Windows 7 Professional x64
MSI p67A-G45 Motherboard
Intel i7-2600k CPU
16 GB Corsair 1066 RAM
1x SDD (Corsair)
1x HDD (500GB)

New OS install (less than 1 week)
New Computer build (less than one week)

So, I did some homework (certain I've missed a step, hence the post) and:
Updated my drivers
Updated my drivers again
Updated my BIOS
Disabled all non-essential start-up programs
Ran a chkdsk on both drives
Checked CPU temperatures under IDLE and stressing loads
Checked case temps ''
Ran Event Viewer, and didn't notice anything around the "Critical Kernel- Power Event ID 41" errors. Nothing remarkable is happening within 10-30 minutes of lockup.

I'm totally at a loss as to how to re-stabilize the system. It's crashing about once every 1 to 2 Hours.

A:Full System Lockup, no error.

The only thing that jumps out (to me) is video testing. Since it's a new install and you've updated the drivers, I'd check the video. Use the free video tests at this link: Hardware Diags
Also check the video card to make sure:
- that it has adequate airflow getting to it
- that the cooling fan is working
- that the cooler isn't clogged with dust/dirt
- that the power plug is firmly plugged into the card (if so equipped)

MSINFO32 reports one BSOD, a STOP 0x116 (video). Try the troubleshooting steps at this link: STOP 0x116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR troubleshooting

You have an MSI motherboard. If you have MSI Afterburner installed, please uninstall it immediately. It (and Riva Tuner/EVGA Precision) are known to cause BSOD's in some Win7 systems.

BTW - nice job in updating drivers. There was only 1 2009 driver in the memory dump (audio) - the rest were 2010 and 2011, we don't see that very often!

The BSOD is the same as the one in MSINFO32 that I mentioned above. Try those steps and see what happens.

Hi guys, sorry if this is the wrong section - I couldn't find a dedicated video section. Anyway:

Firstly, I'm running a bug free and competent AMD Phenom II x6 machine with an ATI 6870 and 8 gigs of ram. Hard drives have plenty of space and there aren't any hardware faults. Everything tends to run fine.

Since I installed Silverlight to use LoveFilm streaming, though, fullscreen viewing inexplicably stutters!

Solutions tried:Reinstall GPU driver (cleaning it with driver sweeper, CC cleaner etc)
Reinstall Silverlight
Uninstall windows update that installed original silverlight
Reinstalled it again
Turned off any custom video settings in the ATI Catalyst
Tried using IE, FireFox (currently use chrome)
Tried increasing amount of space Silverlight can use
Tried turning hardware acceleration on in the Silverlight options

I can't think of anything else. It doesn't matter if the film or TV show is HD or SD, full screen will stutter. My native resolution is 1920x1080, as per, and my refresh rate is 60hz. No clashes there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Note I've tried Silverlight 4 and 5, both cause the same problem.

Ok what is going on here is your screen is set to a smaller size in game then in windows.
If you check your windows settings you will see something like 1440x900 then look at the setting in game it may end up being 800x600. See the difference.
Also what game are you trying to play, I know that most steam games you need to enable the widescreen support in game then you can change the resolution to the correct size for your screen.

Hey guys,

I wonder if someone can help me, I'm really getting stressed because this problem is really bugging me.

Any application like a game or a presentation wont use the entire monitor! It centers itself into a square and leaves a huge gap on each side.

I cant take a screenshot so I will try to draw an example.
Imagine the white is the application and the picture is my entire monitor.

Can someone help me please? I dont know what else to do. I've updated the drivers and nothing seems to work!

It's a HP Compaq 6710b, I haven't changed any display hardware. I've changed the RAM that's it.

Any help appreciated.
Thank You

A:Full screen applications don't use full screen!

im assuming you have a widescreen monitor, i have this feature on mine, il take a few screenshots with my phone to show what it does. this picture is the scaling options for flat panel monitors:

now, with this enabled, at your monitors default resolution, will appear like this:

now with it set at a resolution that isnt your monitors default will appear like this:

to stop this from happening, simply find out what your default resolution is for your monitor, and set the application resolution to this.

if you cannot find anywhere to set the default resolution, you can have full screen by reading through the manual for the monitor, there will be an option to remove the aspect ratio scaling on the monitor somewhere if you cant set it on windows.

Hi guys, as most of you know, graphic cards are definitely my weakest point, so hopefully someone can help me.

Since upgrading my graphic drivers from 257.21 to 266.58 when I play a game (or other full screen application) I get a "letterbox" effect with about 3 inches being missing from the top and the bottom of the screen.

Im guessing that for some reason the graphics card is thinking my monitor is widescreen when it's not, but I'm damned if I can find a way to unset it in Nvidia Control Panel.

Any sugestions other than rolling back the driver?

I have been looking for verification that if I buy the Dell 24 Gaming Monitor – S2417DG and attach it to my Inspiron 15 Gaming 7567 HDMI that I will get full 2560x1440 resolution refresh rate 165 Hz with 1ms response as the Monitor specs are listed.
I can find no information that the HDMI will pass this level of output.
I have talked to Dell tech support and they do say that the HDMI port is connected directly to the  NVIDIA  GeForce GTX 1050T i with 4GB GDDR5 but I also have seen information that HDMI will not support this.
So I am looking for verification on this configuration being compatible/able to output the full capabilities of the video card to the monitor via the on board HDMI output?

A:Inspiron 15 Gaming 7567 HDMI Specs/Does HDMI out support full bandwidth for G-SYNC Dell Gaming Monitor – S2417DG

First of all, G-Sync as far as I know requires DisplayPort and will not run on HDMI.  Even if it does, I don't think even HDMI 2.0 has enough bandwidth for 1440p @ 165 Hz.  And even if it does though, all of the Dell systems I've seen have only had HDMI 1.4, which is only enough for 1440p @ 60 Hz.  But even if all of that isn't a problem, does the Inspiron 7567 have ONLY a GeForce GPU, or does it have an Intel GPU plus a GeForce GPU?  If it's the latter, G-Sync will definitely not work because in almost all systems that have both GPUs, only the Intel GPU is directly wired to the display outputs.  If your system has ONLY the GeForce GPU, then G-Sync should work in theory, but again you may have the bandwidth problems I mentioned above.

A:Solved: is there anyway to give skype full access to internet with full speed

Youtube buffers video, a live chat isn't buffered.

If your internet speed is 256kb/s you need faster internet service.

Does anyone have an idea what this could be ?

After a year of good service, my laptop is now, from time to time during use, displaying 'disk full' type messages when trying to save a file (Word) or unzip a file (Winrar) and things like that.

I can still access files on the disk, just not write to it, although the problem when it is occurring seems to be intermittent.

The disks aren't full and have over 10% free. When I restart Windows the problem goes away.

I'm guessing there is something wrong with the disk?

Any ideas on how to check for errors/problems or solve this?

when im playing games like need for speed hot pursuit 2010 in the task manager cpu 0 is at full load and cpu 1 is at idle, how to resolve this issue

i think its multi core rendering because in left 4 dead it has he same issue but after i turned of multi core rendering it has a balance load at cpu 0,1, but nfs has no multi core rendering settings

BTW i have no graphic card im using hd graphics

A:(Dual core) cpu 0 at full load when gaming

Why do you think you have a problem? If the game is not multicore aware it is not going to use multiple processor cores.

I am using the following machine with all of the stock hardware:
Samsung NP-RF510
Access Denied

-exception is that the stock chipset was replaced due to a malfunction

I have been experiencing the following problem for some time:
When playing computer games the screen will go black and the computer will lock up. Whatever sound file that was being played will loop until the computer shuts down (either it times out or I press the power button). The computer ONLY freezes up during games. I have tested the card with 3DMark, leaving it running for hours without issue.

I have attempted the following solutions:
1) Updated all drivers
2) Rolled back graphics drivers
3) Improved cooling (laptop fan)

Thank you to anyone who helps in advance. You all are the best folks on the internet.

My hdd holds 72gigs, but I downloaded a movie that took up the rest on it and when I went to delete the movie it wont let me. Also tried to remove programs that were over 1gb and they were removed, but my hdd still says free space:0MB. I have deleted over 5gbs of programs and still no change even after restarting winsxp many times. I ran hijackthis and would like someone to look through it and tell me any files that I could remove. Thanks in advance!

When I bring up 'computer" (Windows + E) I've noticed that the bar graph showing how relatively full an external hard drive is is colored blue-green. But whenever there is less than 10 percent of the drive space free that bar turns red.

That made some sense for a drive with a few hundred gigabytes (although I don't understand the technical reasons) because I assume there needs to be a minimum amount of free space for the system to be able to do whatever manipulation of those files might be required, such as defragmenting the drive (something I've never done in decades).

However with a 4 terabyte drive the system says it is over 90 percent full when there is still over 350 gigabytes still available. That's a huge amount of space, as big as some drive C's on some computers, so I've been ignoring the red bar, but still keeping an eye on those hard drives that have it.

Does anyone have information on how much space should really be left unused on a hard drive? I hate to overfill a drive, yet also don't see the point in pulling a drive for storage with 200 or 300 gigabytes still available on it. Any advice (with sound reasons) appreciated.

A:How full is too full for a hard drive?

Defrag is done automatically when the PC is idle in Windows 7, you can also start it manually of course.

There is a tutorial or some such I remember seeing here to adjust when the bar turns red. I will try to find it.

Edit: Here it is low disc space partition color

It is not exactly setting the %, but disabling the coloring all together though. Can't find an exact answer to your question though. See if you will like the above solution.

Windows will remember where you last downloaded to. Is it possible you last downloaded to a flash drive that is full?

I have an XP workstation that runs a DOS application that is started up using a PIF file. The DOS app runs fine but does not display a full screen vertically. Horizontially, it displays a full screen since I checked the Full Screen mode in the PIF file parameters. I want to have the entire screen taken up by the display of the DOS program. Two other PCs (one a WIN98 PC and the other a WIN2K PC) display in a complete screen. Can someone help me out with my problem.

Hi. When running IE8 in a full screen, you don't see the clock (lower left hand corner), and obviously you can't see the date. Is there a way, or a clock, to be there in Full-Screen secession?? Thank You

A:Full Screen IE 8

Hello Ilya,

When you are in F11 full screen mode, you can press the Windows key to temporarily see the clock, but there is no way to have the clock always there in F11 full screen mode.

To have the clock there, you would need to maximize the IE8 window instead of using F11 mode.

Hope this helps,
