I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The default device is set as my speakers and I'd like to set it as my headphones. I've tried reinstalling the drivers multiple times (I'm using IDT, can I use something else or do I have to use these?), and various other tips I've seen, and it refuses to change.
I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, and an HP Envy 14.

Odd, I've only experienced headphone jacks being ignored in ubuntu :/
Anyway, have you tried right clicking on the windows audio icon? One of the advanced options should be device selection.

With my current setup I have 2 playback devices that I constantly use on my computer. Currently to switch between devices I have to go to control panel, sound, and then change the playback device. I am hoping to find a way to make 2 shortcuts on my desktop to change my playback devices. One shortcut for each of my devices, where i can open the shortcut and the default device will be changed. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate.

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

1. I installed the slipstreamed version of Vista SP1 Ultimate 32bit (clean install) on my computer.

2. Attached to my computer is a Plantronics USB headset for VoIP telephony.

3. I didn't have to install additional audio drivers since sound worked directly after I had Vista installed.

4. However, I'm unable to change the default playback device (which is set to the USB headset currently) to the internal sound card.

5. When I do that in "Sound" of the control panel, the green check box changes, but when I close the window and re-open it, the default device is again the USB headset. I did notice though that after such procedure the Windows Sounds are played back on the correct speakers (and not on the headset). So something changes apparently...

6. I also tried changing it through WMP as was suggested here, but that didn't help in any way at all. Speaking of which: Where exactly did you change those settings (I did under Tools\Options\Devices\Speakers).

7. I also noticed that when I boot and log into Vista, the sound plays fine on my speakers (and not on the USB headset). However, once logged into Vista, the default sound device is (again) the USB headset.

This is really a nightmare. If I want sound on my speakers I need to disable the headset. Yet then I cannot use VoIP anymore. (And vice versa).
Any ideas which registry tweak might solve this? It looks to me like something in Vista is interfering with/overriding whichever device is selected as the default p... Read more

A:Can't change default audio device

You're kinda stuck here, I think. I had a similar problem at one point (with XP, no less) and it's just a fact of USB headsets.

USB sound devices act like little cards that take over as the default. If you change devices, they "uninstall" themselves, then reinstall because they are plug and play. They also work as an all or nothing deal.

While it's a little different, think of it as installing a PCI Audigy and a PCI XtremeGamer. Only one of them is going to run at a time, unless you do something pretty special. So, the solution really seems to be to get a standard microphone that just runs off of the normal card.

It's not Vista so much as the USB device that is taking over. The reason it works until you start the system is the order drivers are loaded. Sorry for the bad news. Someone on here might know something I don't, but I spent about two months trying before I gave up and spent a little money on standard headphone and mic.

Hello Out There --

Can someone please help me with this problem? I need to change the default email client in Windows 8 to Gmail in Chrome.

I thought that this would be an easy fix, but I have searched the Web, searched the forums, and cannot find anywhere that it tells me how to do this.

Besides the fact that I want all of my MAILTO links to use my Web based Gmail account, I need it to do so to make it work with OneNote.

In OneNote, when I try to send someone a page, it gives me an error message about Microsoft Outlook not being started or set up, and says to change it in Default Programs. I tried doing this, but my MAILTO links are all set to Google Chrome, which seems like it would work.

If anyone can help me, I would be truly grateful. Thank you for your kind consideration of my issue.

I have a fairly new (bought in March) Fujitsu FMV Esprimo desktop computer with English OS (yes, Windows 7) here in Japan.

It has worked ok until about a week ago. A couple of weeks earlier, my home computer (NEC LaVie C laptop with XP Japanese OS) would open gmail with html view, not standard view, and I'd always have to manually change it to standard. Now this is sporadically happening on my Fujitsu.

I cannot find anywhere on gmail or Google that describes how to make standard view my default setting, and I've scoured the Google forums to no avail. I don't even see a customer service contact link to Google or gmail.

I just ran a Malwarebytes full system scan and found nothing. I run Avast and update it every day automatically. Have found no viruses so far.

I exchange email between the Fujitsu (at work on a different email system, not gmail) and the NEC (at home where I only use gmail), and on occasion I plug in a USB flash drive at home with info from the Fujitsu, and vice versa, so it is possible there might be an exchange of malware.

(My NEC has crashed (see another thread), so I cannot access it anymore. Probably a hard drive problem, not malware-related.)

Can I have two default playback devices, one for HDMI and the other for analog? I have an Onkoyo TX-SR605 receiver and I am using both zone one and zone two. Zone one is HDMI and is in the living room which I use for TV, movies, music, etc. 1. Zone two is in the dining room and it is analog which I use it for music, specifically Rhapsody via my HTPC. The TV is then used as a monitor.

If I am watching TV in the living room and want to listen to Rhapsody in the dining room, I use my Harmony remote to switch everything. But I have to go into Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Sound/Playback and manually switch the default playback device from the Onkyo TX-SR605 (HDMI) to Speakers (analog) every time. Is there a way to make that default playback device switch automatically?

My HTPC configured as follows:
HTPC => HDMI => Onkyo TX-SR605 => HDMI => Sony KDL-46W3000
HTPC => VGA => Sony KDL-46W3000
HTPC audio => splitter=>red/white analog cable => Onkyo TX-SR605
Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate
Gigabyte GA-H55-USB3

Thanks in advance!

A:Constantly have to change default playback device

The short answer is No. On many systems if there is an HDMI cable plugged into the PC it automatically defaults to the HDMI as the "default sound playback device" and with the cable inserted you have to manually switch it back to the speakers.

On some others, You have to manually switch to which output you want, the HDMI or the Analog (or digital) "speakers".

But in either case it has to be done at the PC.

I would suggest some other hookup method, with HDMI, at your theatre system, so you can do it somewhere other than at the PC.

A:Unable to change default audio playback device

What model PC?

But, generally if you have the speakers set as default playback device and the plug in a headset it will automatically switch to the headset, unplug the headset and it will revert to the speakers.

For the front panel headset/mic jack, is the cable that's connected to the motherboard labeled "HD Audio"? or is it the older "AC97". Some sound system control panels have a setup for whichever you have (the HD Audio is the preferred connector).

Hey everyone.

Currently I'm using the Realtek on-board sound chip on my ASRock P67 Pro3 Sandy-Bridge generation board, plus I have connected a second screen (TV really) via HDMI to the nVidia GTX 670 graphics card.

A recent change in circumstances has required me to add another (wireless) device, which is mainly needed for the output of spoken language. For that reason I decided to buy an affordable Bluetooth soundbar with an integrated microphone, because the technology is both wireless and the quality of the speakers is hardly of importance for the required task.

I got the device paired successfully and the Bluetooth speakers are available to be chosen as an extra sound device. So far so good, but there's one problem: as soon as the Bluetooth connection is made, Windows decides without asking for my input by the way, to switch off the pair of headphones which are connected to the audio out on the mainboard and starts using the soundbar as the default audio output device on a system-wide level.

That's a nice feature actually for many circumstances, but I need to disable it somehow. Ideally, I would like the sound settings of Windows to remain exactly the same, no matter if a Bluetooth device capable of playing back audio is connected or not. When required, I would switch on the Bluetooth speakers and use a specific piece of software to work with that specific device.

Is a configuration like that possible on Windows 7? If so, what do I need to do to set this up? I've loo... Read more

Hi all,

I have my computer hooked up to a home theater system. Most of the time, my computer audio output is set to my on-board motherboard audio connected to simple speakers, but I frequently switch the default device to digital output through my sound card (HTO Striker 7.1).

My goal is to create a file that I can keep on the desktop that will switch the default audio device. In a perfect world, it would switch back and forth between the 2 settings that I use, but I understand that it might be too much to ask for.

I have a bit of experience with batch files in XP, but that was essentially reverse-engineering things that I found online. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi! Mr D, welcome to 7F

Would hotkeys fill the bill?

Change the volume, mute, and other settings of any soundcard.
Make any window transparent, always-on-top, or alter its shape.
Use a joystick or keyboard as a mouse.
Monitor your system. For example, close unwanted windows the moment they appear.
Retrieve and change the clipboard's contents, including file names copied from an Explorer window.
Disable or override Windows' own shortcut keys such as Win+E and Win+R.
Alleviate RSI with substitutes for Alt-Tab (using keys, mouse wheel, or buttons).
Customize the tray icon menu with your own icon, tooltip, menu items, and submenus.
Display dialog boxes, tooltips, balloon tips, and popup menus to interact with the user.
Perform scripted actions in response to system shutdown or logoff.
Detect how long the user has been idle. For example, run CPU intensive tasks only when the user is away.
Automate game actions by detecting images and pixel colors (this is intended for legitimate uses such as the alleviation of RSI).
Read, write, and parse text files more easily than in other languages.
Perform operation(s) upon a set of files that match a wildcard pattern.
Work with the registry and INI files.

Silly question. I had to reset my Google Chrome due to a malware check.

When I click on a "send email" link in Chrome, a new email pops up in my Gmail browser. However, I would like it to open a new email in MS Outlook 2010.

There must be a "set MS Outlook 2010" as default when clicking on email links in Chrome, but I can't seem to find it. I have already made Outlook the default program for email, but that didn't take care of the issue.

Thank you so much.

Hi all, Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on HP-DM1-4050us laptop, disabled a couple of unneeded services, now headphones not working, no idea which service caused this but I didn't touch either of the two required audio services (Windows Audio, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder).

Audio now plays fine through speakers, but plug headphones in and it's mute. Headphones work fine with other audio devices like my phone, though. Triple checked I'm using the right jack and plugging in completely.

I ran the Audio troubleshooting wizard, and it appears the problem is that there are two devices, "Speakers and Headphones" and "Communications Headphones", and the former is the default audio device, the latter is the default communications device, when the latter needs to be both.

However, right clicking the latter device and hitting "Make Default Audio Device" has no effect, the former option remains the default audio device. Anyone know what the problem is here, why the default audio device can't be changed, or what windows service could have anything to do with this (besides the two primary audio services)?

Hi everyone, I got a hard question (well, at least I believe it is).

When I plug my usb headset into my computer it automatically becomes the default/standard device - which is fine. When I play music, play games all the sound comes out of my headset.
But lets say I want the music to be played out of my speakers instead of my headset, is that possible using WMP11? Any other software I can use to accomplish this?

Another situation would be a friend watching a movie on my TV through my computer while I am gaming at the same time on my computer monitor. I am forced to plug out my headset and mute my game so the people watching a movie on my tv don't hear the ingame sound.

Is there any way to force a program (or at least WMP11) to play out of a different audio device than the one which ISN'T the default/standard playback device?

I just asked all of my colleagues (we are computer technicians), no-one knew ^^

A:Solved: Playback Audio through different device than the Default Device - Possible?

Windows Media Player 11 -> Tools -> Options -> Devices -> Speakers -> "Select the audio device."

Hi guys, so I did some tweaking around in Sounds and Realtek HD Audio Manager, and I finally got stereo mix working. There's only one catch. It only picks it up if my default device is Reaktek HD Speakers. I tried setting my USB headset as the default device, since I never use my monitor's built in speakers, and it didn't work. I'm dead confused on what to do now.

http://i46.tinypic.com/a0uja9.png To give you an idea in visual terms.

This used to work fine on Vista, dunno what happened when I made the switch to 7 but my friends seem to have no trouble switching back and forth between stereo mix and their mics in Ventrilo, which really bugs me.

Any helps appreciated, and if you want more info, just ask.

Edit: Hmm, I just tried this: Downloaded VAC, in playback I set Line 1 as my default device, and in the recording tab, I made the Line 1 (different than the playback one) listen to what my USB headset was saying, and that somehow worked in letting me use my headset for stereo mix rather than the speakers built into my monitor. I know that there are other ways though because I NEVER had to go through all this trouble to do this. So help is still appreciated!

If you have ever wanted to change that boring "HID-compliant Mouse" title to something more descriptive, this tutorial is for you. The name of any device can be modified with this method and can help you organize your devices better in Device Manager.

First, open Device Manager by opening a run prompt (Windows Key + R) and typing devmgmt.msc. You can also access the Device Manager via the Control Panel.

Next, find the device that you want to change the name of. Since I want to change the name of my "HID-compliant Mouse", I will look for that. The devices are organized nicely into categories, so you shouldn't have any issues finding the right one.

Right click on the device and select Properties. Then go to the Details tab and pick "Driver key" from the dropdown list. Copy the value by right clicking it and selecting "Copy".

Open the Registry Editor by opening a run prompt and typing regedit. Grant administrator privileges if prompted to do so.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > ControlSet001 > Enum

Right click on the Enum key and select "Permissions...".

On the screen that appears, click "Add..."

In the "Enter the object names to select" text field, type the name of the user currently logged into the computer. For instance, my username is "Brandon" so I type Brandon and press the "Check Names" box. If entered correctly, the rest will be filled ... Read more

When I attempt to respond via email to some sites, they say "send an email" and then offer a link, and that link opens Windows Live email.

I do not use Windows Live and wish to have my gmail account opened to allow me to send emails. What I wind up doing is time consuming:

I do allow Windows live to open and the copy the email address of the recipient and copy and paste to my gmail "compose".

Is there a setting I can adjust to make this so, that the default link automatically goes to gmail?

I use Chrome as my browser also, and rarely use IE 9, or 10 or whatever version IE is nowadays.

Please be very specific in your response.

Thanks in advance,

A:Using Gmail as default email account

If you use Chrome, then you can try this extension for Chrome.

Edit: I need to explain how this works on my machine.

I use Win 7 Pro. Control Panel>Programs>Default Programs. My default mail program is the Windows Live Mail 2011 email client.

So, when I use IE8, and I click on an email to: link, it opens into my Windows Live email client, which is configured to my Gmail account. Since I use the email client frequently, this is ok with me.

But I also use Chrome - quite a lot actually. So, I installed the above-linked extension, which opens directly into my Gmail account (of course, in the process, and in the first instance, I have to go through the gmail login page).

Eventually, the email client and the Gmail account sync up as and when I use the former in online mode.

This is how it seems to work for me.

I use Windows 7 and Google Chrome. I do not use an email client. When I right click on something on my desktop (such as a photo), and choose Send To, I get a message that says either I should mark Outlook as my default email client (which I do not want to do). How can I make Gmail be the default for a Mail to? (I already tried selecting Protocol from the gmail url and then allowing gmail).

I would like to set Firefox to open up gmail (inside of a new tab or new window) instead of an outside program whenever I click on an email address. Is this possible? I just don't really like to use client programs; I like to use browsers instead.

You will have some obvious limitations, which you seem to be ready for.

• At the Firefox 3 address bar, you need to type in “about:config” and you will be prompted with a warning page. Just click on “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button to proceed.

• Type in “gecko.handlerService” into Filter box until you get gecko.handlerService.allowRegisterFromDifferentHost Preference name. Make sure the value is “True”. Change it if it is not.
Also check for network.protocol-handler.external.mailto Preference name. Make sure the value is “True”.

• Copy the following code to the address bar and press ENTER.

• Copy the following link and press ENTER if you are a Google Apps user:

• Change example.com to your own domain name.

• Firefox 3 will thence prompt you a question whether you want to add application. Click on the “Add Application” button.

• Now you click any mailto: link and you will prompt with a small window “Lau... Read more

I have experimented off and on with various SSBs (Single Site Browsers) in conjunction with web apps such as Gmail and G calendar, usually on my Mac. I have found SisterB SSB, and am using it with Gmail and it works pretty well but I can find no way to make Windows 7 accept it as an email client in its own right.

The address in shortcut to it reads "C:\Program Files (x86)\MobileApps1\SisterB\SisterB.exe" SSB2
The SSB2 part refers to the Gmail link when seen in the Registry. Alas, the Default Programs options show no way to add this address as a candidate for Default Email client, just pre-selected options and their radio-buttons or a closed list of apps.

Others must have cracked this seemingly trivial problem! Can anybody hint the way for me to do so too, please?

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I'm not familiar with the type of settings your referring to so forgive me if this seems completely off base
