Autocomplete Dropdown (in Windows, Not Ie) Disabled

Q: Autocomplete Dropdown (in Windows, Not Ie) Disabled

Hi there everyone...I'm having a problem with Windows XP and I'm wondering if anyone can help.A few weeks ago I was infected with a nasty trojan. Two great guys in the HiJackThis forum helped me remove it, but in the end I was left with a couple of side-effects.The one I'm most annoyed by is my loss of Autocomplete Dropdown boxes when trying to open and/or save files in any of my programs (Photoshop, AutoCad, Word, whatever...).I think you guys know what the dropdown boxes are, but I'll explain: first of all, I'm NOT talking about the autocomplete function in Internet Explorer. I've had that turned off for months, and having it turned off has never affected these other autocomplete functions. The dropdown boxes I'm talking about are the ones that appear when you try to open or save a file in a program you're running. So, for example, you try to save a file in a program that you're running, but you already have a number of similarly named files on your hard-drive. When I used to save my files (before the infection), if I started to type a name into the "save as" box, the program would produce a dropdown box of autocomplete suggestions for me -- so if I had three files "SAVE1", "SAVED2", "SAVING3"... and started to save a file by typing "SA" all three names would appear in the dropdown box... If I continued to type "SAVE", the third file would disappear from the drop down box, and if I typed "SAVED" only the file "SAVED2" would appear...For some strange reason, the dropdown box no longer appears (which is really annoying when you're trying to group file names but you have a large number of similarly saved files on your hard-drive). While the guys in the HiJackThis forum were helping me out, I tried to google the problem and found a few sites that suggested that the registry entry for "explorer > autocomplete" might be affected... here's one description: Control the Auto Complete Mode This setting controls whether the automatic text completion (AutoComplete) feature of Windows explorer appends the suggested text to the words as you are typing as well as showing a drop-down list of available values. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete. Value Name: Append Completion, Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value), Value Data: yes or no. Create a new string value, or modify the existing value, named "Append Completion" and set it to "yes" to append the suggested text as you are typing or "no" to only show a drop-down list.So I looked at the above setting (I didn't change anything) and noticed it was set as they described... Which suggests that the dropdown function should be working. I then looked at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (thinking that maybe it was over-riding CURRENT_USER) and found that there was no autocomplete key...I also tried turning on "TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>Advanced>Use Inline Auto Complete"... which did in fact turn on the autocomplete function (sort of) in the OPEN/SAVE dialog boxes in the other programs I was running, but it also turned on AutoComplete in Internet Explorer (and I don't want that turned on)...I guess what I'm asking is, does anyone know how you get these drop-down boxes back, without having to turn on AutoComplete in Internet Explorer? I suspect something happened to the registry while we cleaned-up the malware infection, or that the infection itself may have affected this function. Or maybe it's something else altogether. In any case, if someone could lend a hand with this, I'd really appreciate it.Thanks a million, D.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey don_s,
I was hoping one of the techies would answer this, but they just might need a bit more information.

What programs do you want auto-complete to run in? Just MS word for example? I think the function that you are looking at in IE is kinda broad, it will complete everything including names and some passwords.
The function that deals with file saving and names is a bit different I think, but I am not sure as to the settings on that. I am sure after the holiday one of the experts here will come along and take a look at this

hang in there......

Hello and thank you for taking the time to check this out.
I have checked various forums for an answer or modifiable answer to my questions, but I haven’t found anything that appears to suit my problems.

I am using MS Word 2010 (Windows8 64 bit) and VBA Controls from the ‘Legacy Form’ tool option, Dropdown Form Field.
The VBA code for PeriodicList is located in Module1, General, PeriodicList
The VBA code for Suburb is located in Module1, General, Suburb
I do not have Option Explicit at the beginning of the code module.

I am creating a form layout in a MS Word document (Macro enabled), for users to complete, print, sign then scan and email to us. I am not using the ‘Userform’ because it is too difficult to set out the way we want it to look.

I have tried various ways to re-gig things to try to get things to work …. But I am frustrated and unsuccessful after trying to source solutions from the net.

I am only relatively new to VBA and am slowly getting the gist of it … but it is a very slow process.

I have 2 questions:

Question 1:
Under PeriodicList()

When “Dropdown1” is clicked it shows the options available and when selected it will determine what is listed in “Dropdown2” – however, if the user goes back to clicking “Dropdown1” and makes a different selection, it doesn’t clear “Dropdown2” field, which can lead to confusion because the old content is still in the field.
How do I code it to clear “Dropdown2” if “Dropdown1” is clicked?

Question 2:... Read more

Steps to reproduce:

1. Create a basic form with an input element for email
2. Add autocomplete attribute with value "email" and name attribute with some random value (not email).
3. When filling this form, autocomplete doesn't work(no previously used values of emails are listed).

Actual results:

No previously filled values of email are listed even though we have provided autocomplete attribute as email.

Expected results:

Previously used values of emails should have been listed as we have provided the autocomplete attribute as email.

Hi,
I recently added a reg key to DisablePasswordCaching (1) to some meeting room computers at work.

The option works, users are not prompted to save passwords whenever logging in to a web site.

After looking around on the net, the options should also become greyed out in the setting (Internt Options - Content - AutoComplete - Settings - "Use AutoComplete For") However, the check boxes are still active.

Any suggestions to why they are not greyed out since the reg key is enabled?

Hellooooooo

I am looking for a way to clean up the autocomplete list. You know when you click on seach window or an email window, and it drops down a list of items that have been used. (not the history list for the internet) Some friends came over and looked up some things (not natural things) and I would like those out of that list, or find a way to clean that.

A:cleaning autocomplete windows xp

IE has a "clear autocomplete" in Internet options>content tab. You can also try highlighting the item you want to delete and hit the delete key on your keyboard.

When i create a new email, and start to type in the person or email address that it's going to, the autocomplete usually fills in the rest of the email address so you don't have to type it all in.

I have noticed with mine that if you do not send an email to a particular person for about a month or two, the autocomplete will not have that persons address in the group and will not fiull it in. It's like it forgets some of your friends email addresses if you don't send frequent emails to them.

Is there any way to change it so that it always remembers them?

A:Autocomplete in Windows mail

Windows Mail doesn't use the contacts list to auto complete addresses.

It uses a separate list of the last 30 addresses you sent messages to.

Without a registry tweak, you have what you are suppose to.

I suggest that you do not fool with registry for this type of problem. There is the possiblity of much bigger problems.

After restarting my computer today, I am having issues with drop down menus (among other things). For instance, when I click the search box drop down in firefox, it will not go away and it causes me to be unable to use firefox. Upon pressing alt+tab, the program instantly closes and the "shutdown" menu for windows appears.

When trying to play "team fortress", a similar problem happens where the program appears to freeze and upon pressing alt+tab the game closes and the shutdown menu appears.

When opening an explorer window, the dropdown address bar flickers on and off as if I am clicking it over and over again, and will not stop until I close out the window. A similar thing happens in firefox when I click the dropdown on the address bar, but if I click it again it goes away.

I tried doing a system restore, but it didn't fix anything. Please help, I don't want to have to format!

P.S.: Also, pressing Ctrl + T to open a new window in firefox doesn't work, but middle clicking a link to open one does.

P.S. 2: I just noticed as well that the text that appears in the box when you hover over certain links disappears instantly.

P.S. 3: Pressing ctrl + C to copy closes out all but one tab in firefox

Hi. My Dad has a problem on his computer to do with fonts and theme.

His computer has two partitions, one being his and the other being my Mum's.

My Mum's partition has a different font. If she looks in display properties she has Windows XP theme whereas my Dad's partition had Windows XP (Modified) theme.

My Dad wanted to change my Mum's partition to 'Windows XP Modified' as well but the option wasn't there. Her font has a difference appearence and appears like there are some pixels missing.

Anyhow to cut a long story short I suggested my Dad change his partition to the basic 'Windows XP' to see if that would make the same pixels missing as on my Mum's partition and he did that. His partition then had the same appearence as my Mum's. The problem now is that when he tried to change his own partition BACK to the Windows XP Modified, it no longer appears on the display properties dropdown menu as an option. So now my Dad is stuck with the same 'inferior' font my Mum has. Their text size is set to large. My Dad has also lost his desktop.

Does anyone know what would cause the Windows XP Modified theme to disappear from the dropdown menu? Anyone know how to restore it?

Thanks.

Cheri

Yes, a restore disk with restore your PC back to its clean state as if you got it new. Not sure why its preventing you from logging in, some sort of configuration error. Pleasse note, if you use the restore disk, you lose any data on the HD.

If data is important, try using a Live Linux CD and boot from that, then you can access the HD and copy files of it before using the restore CD.

Good morning.

Events:

I just started having some problems on my PC. I'm using Windows 10, x64, Professional edition. Non-secure boot.

I got a notification from Windows to the effect of "Warning you are not running any security software".

I immediately tried to open Windows Defender but what I got instead was all sliders disabled. On opening my Updates tab I saw the message "Some settings are managed by your organization".

On trying to open Windows Security Center I didn't get anything. Checking services showed me it had been set to disabled.

Steps taken so far:

I tried setting it back to Automatic delayed start and restarting the service but immediately it was disabled again.

At this point I was running a malwarebytes scan. Malwarebytes found a "Chromebrowser.exe" PUP which I removed.

On a rescan it has so far yet to detect anything.

Checking Group Policy shows all entries are set to default "Not Configured" except one for automatic removal which I disabled myself when I first installed Windows 10.

Changing group policy settings for Allow Telemetry under Data collection and Telemetry (under Computer Configuration, Admin templates, Windows components) to full, then disabling again resulted in the "Some settings are managed by organizatio" notice going away, the previously disabled "Get Started" button for Insider Program became enabled again.

Hello guys, this is my first post here. I have problem last few days. It could be some sort of malware or virus which cant be detected with AVG antivirus or Ad aware. This lap top hasnt been connected online for quite a while and problems started after used my USB flash disk. After that i couldnt open Task Manager(neighter with right click on task bar - text faded, nor with ctrl-alt-delete) or regedit. Also i cant boot into safe mode (when it starts, suddenly blue screen appears for a milisecond and computer restarts). I cant start AVG system scan, it reports that "application cannot run due to an error while verifying its electronic certificate". I can run AVG guard though. There was problem with C disk (i couldnt open it with double click and i had to use "explore" ). I resolved it by deleting "autorun.ini" file thru command prompt (it was hidden file and, another problem that occured, i cant edit folder options to make hidden files visible). There is also problem with language bar which is disabled and cannot be re-enabled cause its button is faded, though i dont care much about it.

It sounds very much like a virus. If you can get on the internet google regtools.vbs that script file should get your regedit working again but don't know for how long if it is a virus.

Ok, this question is for a friend, so it will be a lot of relaying the info.

IE remembers the address I've typed in (autocomplete) even when I turn autocomplete off and clear my cookies. It makes going to the site a lot slower when I have to do down past a bunch of the same site addresses. How can I manually remove them from the drop down menu in the address bar?

So someoen told him "go to tools-> internet options and change the days to keep things in history to 0."

I already have that, and this happens even if I've just cleared my history. Some sites are just permanently on the drop down menu when you type the first letter of their address.

He also did Start » Settings » Taskbar & Start Menu Properties » Advanced » Clear and that didn't work either.

It clears all other sites, but http://boards.ign.com ones.

Hello,

I recently got a virus which put "desktop.ini" files in folders all over my C:\ drive, so I follwed the instructions on google and did a search for "desktop.ini" and deleted all the files.

However since I did this, the little dropdown menu at the top of the screen which is usually opened by:
1) holding down the "Fn" key
2) Hovering the pointer near the top of the screen

always seems to be open when I log on, or come out of sleep mode unless I press "Fn" multiple times and make it go away.

Here's a screenshot of what it looks like. As you can see, it's partially transparent, and not really fullly "selected".

How can I fix this problem? Thanks!!!

A:Fn Dropdown

Hi welcome to the forum.
As stated you recently got a virus. May I ask what happened to it?
Did you delete it, did you use AV or other software to scan your computer? Is it still there?
If so:-

First, to assist in the elimination of possible virus and/or malware.
I would ask you to please use your Anti-virus full scan program facilities, making sure, you have updated the software first. Please advise us of the results.

If you do not have any anti-virus loaded please go to this link and download Microsoft Security Essentials :- Microsoft Security Essentials | Protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware

Secondly, please download:- malwarebytes Malwarebytes a Malware searching program, again, an updated full scan. Notify results please. Both these programs are Freeware

I have a friend using Windows XP home edition with Internet Explorer 7.0. If she goes to a website like www.expedia.com, whenever she clicks on a dropdown menu to change the date or information, the menu opens up as blank and the mouse cursor turns into a crosshair. If we click it 2 or 3 times sometimes the dropdown populates most times it doesnt. Some of the dropdowns on the site work everytime while others are extremely intermittent. I have went to a few other sites with dropdown menus and experienced the same issues.

I tried the same websites on a different computer with Windows XP and IE 6.0 with no issues.

Any ideas why these dropdowns are not coming up properly?

Go through all the defaults on Tools - Internet Options (press ALT on keyboard to view this menu in IE)

Also go to www.adobe.com and do the flash install again (without google bar)

In my version of XP PRO, I haven't been able to find any provision for removing entries from my various dropdown menus. This is really annoying in
IE6 where my various download managers came in and added to an already overpopulated menu. I'm also tired of sending by Email when I want to save.
Also, my desktop icon lettering is almost invisible. How can I change size and color? I was able to do a lot of this in 98SE as I recall but almost nothing useful ( like XP's useful ) in XP. I'm beginning to think P stands for PIG.

In Access 2007 I have a combo box that is within a subform and a form.

In the combo box:

My Row Source is a Table called Issue ID.

My Control Source is called IssueIDJct. I cannot tell where I got it other than I know that IssueIDJct is is a field inside a table called CallidJunct. It is important because that is my junction table that handles a complex relationship.

Funny thing is that the multiple items that a user selects from the combo box alphabetize just fine.

The part I cannot get to alphabetize is the combo box drop down.

A:cannot get dropdown to go ascending

IssueIDJct is where your selection goes from your combo box.

The easiest thing to do is make a query based on the table and sort your records as you want them, then select the query as your row source.

another way is with SQL but you don't need to know SQL, when you are in form design go to the properties of the Control's "Row Source" clear out what is in the field and click the Build button ( 3 dots ...) this will open the query builder, you can add your table and then sort your fields accordingly ( put the field you want to see in the combo as the 1st column)...then DON'T save just close the query design...it will ask if "you want to update the changes made to the SQL statement and update the property"...click YES and you will now see a "Select" statement in your Row source.

I have been having problems with the display of the dropdown menus in explorer 8, outlook express or if i right click on desktop or an open page, the text is greyed out until i run the cursor over it, it then behaves as normal, except if i click on a command, the text & its blue box remains on the screen on the top of any pages i open. The only way i can clear it is to change the graphic properties & click apply, or reboot the computer, its an annoying problem that i have searched for a fix with no luck, it only started happening in the last month. I am running XP with service pack3, & i install OS updates regularly. The problem doesnt occur in M S Office programs, if anyone can help that would be great.

Hi, I have a feedback form on my site. It lets users send a message to me without revealing my email address and also lets me know which are there favourites areas of the site and things like that so I can further improve it. One of the questions is "Who Is Your Favourite Character?" this is in a dropdown box format. I would like to add a feature where when a character is selected in the list an image of them appears next to it. I think I have seen this before on a logo generator site where when you clicked a font in the list a preview of that font appeared. I have all the necessary images and they are all avatar sized (about 50by50 pixels). I think Javascript could help me do this but I have looked on both Dynamic Drive and Javascript Source but couldn't find anything. Does anybody know of a script or knows a link to a page that might, I would be most grateful. Thankyou for any replies

Is there a way to add a program to the autoplay dropdown?

For example whenever I insert an SD into my computer, I would like the Nikon Transfer program to start automatically.
AD

A:Autoplay Dropdown

You need to use the following application "Autoplay Repair" to customize the autoplay option.

Note: You need to right-click on this file (Application) and run as administrator in xp compatibility mode.

If you do not want to use some third party tool to add entries in registry, let me know so that i can add an lengthy tutorial to add them manually to "AutoplayHandlers" in registry

Good luck

Hi, I hope you can help me out. I have a client who was having some troubles with there computer asked if I would look at it. When I did, I found some malware.

One of the users had a bunch of porn sites in the address bar drop down. How do those get there? I am under the impression that they are items that were typed into the address bar. Is that true, or can you get those from a pop-up or any other way?

Thanks
Harv

A:IE Address History Dropdown

Depending on the browser and the settings, those can be from directly typed URLs, links that have been clicked, or pages that have been visited by any means (popups, etc.), or a combination of those.

The short answer is that if an address appears in the dropdown, it's been visited by the user, either on purpose or inadvertently. Malware may add addresses to the list or may redirect the user against his or her will to such sites.
