Move HDD from old computer to new, doesnt show up in My Computer

Q: Move HDD from old computer to new, doesnt show up in My Computer

I just bought a new Compaq computer because my old one finally died (power supply). New PC works like a charm. So, I had 2 HDDs in my old PC, one with OS, one with music, pics, movies, etc. I wanted to put the second HDD into my new PC. I did so, set it as slave and rebooted. It showed in BIOS, shows up in disk management without drive letter, but won't show up in My Computer. Also, it wont let me change or add drive letter in disk management. I just want to get my stuff off this old drive. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Move HDD from old computer to new, doesnt show up in My Computer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a western digital 1TB external hard drive. Yesterday I was able to use it but today both my computer or laptop will not recognise the drive when I connect to the computer. It makes the 'found new software' sound when i connect but the drive does not show up in the my computer screen.

When I try to update the drivers it says everything is working normally. I am hoping that it hasn't wiped anything on there as I haven't deleted a file or done anything drastic - does anyone know of this happening?

I have searched for advice on the net and it seems like it needs re-formatting but there is a lot of data on the drive that I need and I do not want to delete it.

Is it possible to get the system to recognise the drive again without losing the files on there?

I really need help on this one as I have so many improtant files on there for me and my family....i feel like crying....and I am a guy....lol. Not a computer wiz but can fix if here are step by step troubleshooting solutions.

If anyone has a detailed step by step guide that won't delete anything will be so much appreciated.

A:My external HDD doesnt not show up on my computer screen

Hi, I had the same experience with Western, but mine is toast. I did write in this forum but no one answered - I am BY NO MEANS WHATSOEVER an expert. I CAN tell you what you can try and one thing I learned - Okay, so first, ya gotta rule out the obvious - have you tried a flash drive? does it work in the USB port? in addition, you want to make sure the cable is okay (it prolly is if you can hear that ding) you can't see it in "my computer" but can you see it in device manager?? I go to control panel, system, hardware, device manager - can you see it? it should be in 2 places, one usb and in disk drives. In disk drives - click on your device then properties then volume - if you don't see anything - click populate - you should see status online - if you do HURRAY I think you're okay - if you don't - I'm sorry. : (. .apparantly I've learned, the hard drive is not indestructible, one should ALWAYS ALWAYS "safely remove hardware" and Never let it drop - and ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS have backup on a CD - Let me know if you see it in Volume - oh in addition, you can try going to my computer right click - choose manage - then on the right choose disk managment - if you see your Western there HURRAY I think you'll be fine. Write back and let me know - I'll look up the info on what to do from there - I have it in an email somewhere.

Hi there jagwar. There was probably no drive letter assigned to the HDD.Go to disk mamagement, right click on the on the 500 drive and under "change drive letter and path",assign one to it,should be fine. That is,you are sure that the sata cable is properly seated, power cable as well and you are not "hiding"the drive by any way.Post back!

I had a problem with my windows. When ever I plug in my Flash drive (i got a few: kingston data traveller 1gig, pendrive 128mb,etc) onto my usb port. Window will be able to detect the drive had been plug in. I can see the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the right side of my task bar. But i cannot see the drive appearing in "My Computer". If I double click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon and try to view the external drive information, I can see that its already detected and being assign with drive E: . Even if I open a windows explorer and type in E:\ , it will throw me an error "Cannot find 'file:///E:/'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct". But if I were to restart my computer, then i can see it for the first time. If I disconnect it (thru the "Safely Remove Hardware") and plug it back in (or plug another flash drive), I cant see the external drive. Causing I had to restart my computer multiple time a day . Can anyone help me on this?

I would be tempted to reload the motherboard chipset drivers. They control the USB I/O and if they are just the default WIndows ones, they may not be 100% OK with the specific motherboard hardware.

Recently my computer has started to behave weirdly the first thing that happened was that the computer started to hang permanently and i had to switch it off using the reset button. then it started to give me blue screens with the following messages Stop:0x0000008E, C0x0000005, 0x8307B6F1, 0xAF40bb28, 0x00000000
along with this what has happened is that my computer doesnt shutdown it hangs on logging off. after all this i ran a spyware scan and then checked for registry errors cleaned everything but no luck
so i decided to reinstall windows as i entered the setup it gave me a message windows could not retrieve information about the disks on this computer i restarted virtual disk and nothing happened its the same also sometimes it gives me an error winsetup.dll is either corrupted or missing when im installing windows again.

P.s: my computer is not installing any softwares also the installer hangs and doesnt progress and when i double click a software it takes alot of time to open.

thank you...

Hello everyone,

Im new, so bear with me please. The problem is on my old Sony Viao Model PCG-6H4L XP. I wanted to start fresh and the recovery system for windows gives me only a limited number of dates. I thought that the Viao recovery would do the job.

I was wrong.

I haven't checked recent forums about problems with this, so I went ahead and broke my laptop.
Before the Recovery system starts, my laptop says, with a black background,

'File \minint\system32\biosinfo.inf could not be loaded
The error code is 51239

Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit.'

When I exit, it turns off, reboots, and this message cycles and cycles.

P.S: Below this message, there is a large, long bar that runs across the screen.
P.SS: Thankfully, I transferred the documents to an external HD, but I still need the laptop.

In need for desperate help, I need an answer!!

First of, my monitor exhibited signs of flickering during start-up, but only minor ones and would just stop at the 'Welcome' screen of windows so I didn't give it much thought. Iv'e been using it with the cpu the same time I bought the monitor.

But after some time, the flickering got worse. It went from 1-2 second interval flickers to a whole 10 seconds of blackness before it showed anything.

Now,Iv'e got a new cpu but still using the old monitor. After a day or so, the monitor exhibited the first symptoms of my first cpu, so I just dismissed it. But after a week, It got a hell worse, before I even start-up my computer, the monitor doesn't show Analog/Digital at the top-left corner of the screen. PLUS my cpu keeps restarting after I pushed the ON button after 10 seconds or so.

My question, Is the monitor responsible for the restart and what could be the reason for the flickering?

Thanks for a fast reply.

Welcome Pokeman5 to the windows 7 forums.

The graphics card might be your culprit. Please update your system configuration settings under user cp so that others can maybe help you.
Usually the monitor won't stop your machine from booting. The graphic card most likely be the cause.

There is also the possibility that your power supply could be defective or going bad. Lots of possibilities.

Hello Jamal,

The "Computer" folder name isn't the same as the actual computer name in your second screenshot.

It's completely safe to rename your "Computer" folder using the way in your first screenshot to any name you like since it's only a folder name.

Alright, heres the deal. The fan on my laptop hates me. I.E. today when I logged on, I was checking my e-mail like normal when I got this nifty little pop up that said "Windows has detected a cooling problem on your computer. Please shut down and return for service." Or something along those lines. Except I know that it had to do with my fan because my fan hadnt started at all.
Now my fan has issues anyways. So I finally got it to start by just. . . blowing into the passage a bit to get it started again, which it worked.
I guess what I need to know is if I just need to replace the fan (if I even can on laptops).
So, any help would be much appreciated.

Hey everyone,
Im my PC has been running reasonably well for the last year or so. However yesterday, I turned the computer off by pushing the button and windows was doing all its shut down procedure, so I left the computer... I come back the next day to find that Windows was stuck on the "Windows is shutting down" screen. And I have tried turning it off 3 other times today, however it keeps getting stuck on that screen. Now I am forced to turn it off by the plug, which I am not too sure of.

The computer does seem to be working a tad slower than usual too, but I could just be imagining it.

Now Im not too sure whether my computer has a virus or... is there something wrong with the system.

Could anyone help?

A:My computer doesnt shut down

Use the Windows Error checking utility (Check Disk), with the options to scan the disk surface for errors, and attempt recovery of data and repair the disk.
Open "My Computer"
Right-click on the drive that you wish to check (C: drive/your System drive) > Properties > Tools > and in the "Error checking" section, click on "Check now".
Place a tick in both boxes > Start.
A message will notify you that a restart is necessary: Click OK, and close all windows.
Re-start the computer. The disk will be checked when the system boots.
This test will take some time to run and at times may appear stalled but just let it run.
When the disk check is complete, the system will re-start automatically and load Windows.
If any errors were found, it may be prudent to repeat the process.

How do things look after doing that?

Well, here is the problem is gory detail:

I have recently purchased a computer and it ran beautifully, until one day, after hitting 'Shut Down', the computer turned off, but all of the fans did not. I figured it was just cooling itself down, so paid no attention, but when I tried to turn it on the next day, nothing happened. All of the fans are still on, and the power button has no effect whatsoever, wether I hold it or push, its all the same, with no beep. The reset button is equally useless. The HDD LED on the front of the case is always on, but the power one is off. The fans remain on unless I unplug the power cord to the computer, and when I plug it back it, they start up again. Also, the cd rom doesn't open. I've tried reseating the CPU and the RAM, no go. It almost seems as if some switch has been left jammed in the on position. The CPU is an AMD Athalon 64 4000+, the motherboard is an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe, and the power supply is a Kingwin 450 watt.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks in Advance.

A:Computer doesnt like booting up normally

Your hard is probably failing, and the reason it's taking so long to run the scan is because it's finding uncorrectable errors.

I did notice:

A program running out of a temp folder is usually bad.

You have a lot of stuff I don't recognize on your computer, so it'll take me quite some time to Google many of the HJT log entries.

Hi people.

Recently I bought a new chip of DDR RAM to install to my MB. When I tried inserting it just yesterday, I didnt do it properly (the two little safety things on the side didnt tick meaning the RAM wasnt placed firmly). First time, I turned the PC on for about 3 seconds and it started beeping to alert me that something is wrong, then I turned it off right away so the whole process took 5 seconds.

I thought I placed the RAM in the wrong side, so I flipped it from right to left (which was WRONG) and put it in there, this time I turned it on for the same amount of time (3 secs) and it started beeping so I'd turn it off in the next 2 seconds. This time I smelled a scent that comes out from burning materials... I touched the RAM it was a little warm (and I say warm because I mean WARM not HOT). Now when I turn on the PC it wouldnt turn on.

I'm assuming the motherboard is damaged (I doubt the power supply has anything to do with it but I could be wrong). Please help, I'd appreciate all your suggestions. I talked to a friend of mine and he suggested that I reset the BIOS first and see if that's what's causing it. What should I do?

PS. The RAM is compatible with my MB. Compatibility wasnt an issue.

Hi Jayddren,

Since the packages do come up after a second click, I am leaning to mouse click speed. Try this...

Click Start - Control Panel
Select Printers and other hardware - category view.
Select Mouse - The mouse properties window will open
Under the Button tab you will see double click speed. Slide the adjustment to the left. Double click the test folder to see if that helped.

Also try to click once on the item - to highlight it and then press the keyboard enter key. Does that open the item correctly?

Good luck

Okay so i have been dealing with this problem for a while. And wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction.

So i have a K8N-SLI Deluxe MBO with a gig of kingston ram (2 x 512) i have a Geforce 6600 GT video card (SLI capable) however the fan on it broke. But i have 3 other fans on my computer to compensate.

This is the problem..

sometimes i get home.. hit the power button computer starts yay everyone is happy..
Other days i come home hit power button and NOTHIN happens. I mean nothin.. so i check and look.. the MOBO light is on so i know the mobo is getting power..
And i don't ever move the computer, so its not like something got lose.. i will use one day works fine and second day it might or might not work.

So i'll start playing with the peices (i build computers so im not an idiot) moving them around cleaning a bit (air)

put it all back together and still nothin.. ill get tired and go watch tv for a bit (or whatever) and come back then it turns on!! its like the most random thing ever.

Has anyone had this problem before?

My PC was working fine, I disconnected all the peripherals because I was moving it to the other side of the room. After everything is re-connected the first thing I get is a forever loading Windows XP screen.

I figure ok, that happens sometimes, reset. When I reset I get "System Disk Failure, press any keep to reboot"

SO I reboot and enter the BIOS to make sure it see's the HDD. It doesn't. I reboot again, check BIOS bam, it's there!

Back to the forever loading Windows XP screen.

I can enter Safe Mode, I tried to restore to a few days ago when I am sure it was working fine, it went to the forever Windows XP loading screen, when I reboot and enterewd Safe Mode again, I got notification that my restore was successfull.

So here I have it hit and miss, sometimes it see's the HDD sometimes it doesnt, when it does I keep getting stuck at the Windows XP loading screen.

Heres what I have tried so far:

-Re-seated the cables to the HDD.
-Changed boot priority from CD Rom first to HDD first.
-Banged head on wall a thousand times.
-Cried myself to sleep.

Any suggestions??

I was leaning towards a loose connection at first but when you stated you reseated and tightly fitted all the connections I was alittle surprised.
Is your system using a SATA hard drive? I find those connectors are always making their was loose. This would explain your errors you are recieving.

I am completely out of ideas. I followed someones advice about stripping the system down to find the problem, and of course that was when the computer decided it was going to work every time. I went thru installing all the parts and all the way thru it continued to work. Now every now and then it just wont boot and all I seem to need to do to get it to work is fidget around with a few wires inside the case and then it boots. But this time I tried that and it still wont boot. I dont want to have to take apart my system and put it back together each time it doesnt boot so I guess Im trying to figure out whats going on and fix it if possible. Basically what happens is I press the power button and I hear all the fans kick in, the power and hard drive light stay lit and for a brief moment I hear it try and access the hard drive, all this time nothing comes up on my screen and the only way i can reset/power-down my system is to hold the power button in for 5 seconds. Now when the system does work it starts up just the same, but then briefly flashes the LED on the CD drive before the monitor comes to life and the hard drive LED goes to normal operation ie flashing while accessing, so me thinking would lead me to CD drive, but I am not that knowledgable in this area so any help would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance

Ok, for all I know of this is an interesting if not unique prob. I try to boot up my computer, that was recently transported a fair bit of distance(I moved form one city to another), and the hard drive doesnt want to boot, after the BIOS screen I get a message saying "Invalid Partition Table, Setup cannot continue." this spells bad. I cant acess the BIOS on that machine, my keyboard doesnt seem to want to respond. Any Ideas/Thoughts on how I could fix this?(too much space in my wallet not enough filler)

The other day, my girlfriend used the computer to do all her daily activities (email, bank accounts and all that jazz) and shut down the computer. When i went to restart after i got home from work I was rewarded with a series of loud beeps coming from the internal speaker. Nothing came on the screen, nothing seemed to work. So I did what every self respecting computer geek would do. I ripped the sucker apart and starded again from scratch. I again got the beeps. Thinking it was my hard drive that crashed or some other major thing. I unplugged it, and rebooted. This time I got the screen where it starts to detect the masters and slaves and all that stuff. I unplugged my cd roms and tried plugging in my hard drive on the Secondary IDE this time, and it booted up no problem, only now I have no cd roms. so now i plugged in my cd roms off of my Primary IDE, and nothing started up again. So again i rebooted but plugged in my Hard drive and my cd burner on my secondary ide, with my cd rom off of my Primary IDE, nothing again. I decided to unplug my cd rom and just use the burner and the hard drive, and this is how i am typing this request for help.

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong with my computer, i am stumped. I phoned the place i got my computer from and the tech guy was stumped. Maybee you guys have some more inspirational ideas.

A:my computer doesnt start!!!

Have you checked the bios to make sure the primary is still set to detect the hard drive. It is possible that it may have changed.

Also do you know what bios you have (AMD< Pheonix, etc.)?

Knowing that plus what the code it is sending you would help.

count the beeps and post back. count them as long and short as they may vary in length.

i made a change in the BIOS. specifically - i tried an overclock at a frequency multiplier of 4x (800mhz)and enabled q-fan smart fan or something which basically monitors the temperature and adjusts the fan speeds.i set the start speed at 25 celsius and the full speed at 67 degrees.

now whenever i press the button to turn it on, nothing loads. no signal is sent to the monitor, the motherboard splash page doesnt show, i cannnot access bios. from a hardware point of view, everything looks normal - fans are whirring (hard disk isnt doing anything obviously) but i see nothing in th emonitor and the LED's for my wireless keyboard are 100% lit up, which occurs just at boot when i first start the computer - i figure this means it is stuck in that period before even the splash page loads at which the computer is technically on, but nothing happens. as if there is not even any cpu.

A:computer doesnt turn on

Seems the cpu can't cope with the overclock.
Shut the computer down and turn off the power at the power supply,
or unplug it.
Make sure you discharge the static from your body by touching a
metal water pipe or something.
There is a cmos clear jumper on the motherboard.
Check the manual at the motherboard manufacturers website
for location.
Move it to the clear position for 5 seconds the back to run/normal positon.
That will set the bios to defaults and should get it running again.

Hey everyone

first off sorry if this is the wrong board but im desperate

Today i wanted to see what my computer would run like with 1GB of Ram. Now i knew that my other computer used the same type of Ram so i took the 2 256mb of ram from that computer and placed them into my new one.

It was all really good so i took them back out and placed them back into the machine i took them from. Now heres the bad part. The computer turns on with Cd drive lights and such lighting up however the monitor is blank and nothing is happening I have made absolutel 100% sure the Ram is in correctly and it is. Everything is plugged in. Yet it wont Run. Im getting really worried and upset. So bassically i took the Ram from the system 30minutes later i put them back and now its completely stuffed lol

Any help would be awsum thanks alot

Hey, I have a pretty serious computer problem, and despite everything ive tried, I cant seem to fix it. I wasnt sure where to post this, as I have no idea what so ever as to what is the exact problem, so ill just put it here.

The problem is mostly with games, and other 3D applications.
The older games run a bit better, every few minutes the computer will just 'pause' for 4-5 seconds, and keeps doing it all the time.
With the newer games, after about 5 minutes play, the computer just shuts down. Power light is still on, but everything else has turned off. I have to hold the power button till the light goes on, then turn it on again.

I have thought it might be the graphics card, since it does it mostly in games. I tried a new card, not as powerfull as the one I had, but was easy and cheap to buy. Despite beeing a brand new card, it didnt make even the slightest bit of difference, and the problem continued.

I then tried Memtest86, no errors found. Just to be sure, I tried running with just one of my RAM sticks in, still crashed. Swaped the RAM sticks, tried again, still crashed.

Then I tried a CPU Stress Test, Prime95. Went on for about 30 minutes, no errors or problems of any type.

Tried to clean out the PC, took the graphics card out, and cleaned the heatsink and fan. Did the same with the CPU, and applied some new thermal grease. Also cleaned up and checked the connections on all other parts of the computer, all seems fine.
Didnt help one bit.

A:Computer doesnt like games

It looks like you've checked most things.
Download Everest Home Edition from http://www.lavalys.hu/products/downl...?pid=1&lang=en
Go to Computer > Sensors, check the readings for your PSU and post back with the results.

Are DirectX and your graphics drivers up to date?
