Word Crashes When Trying To Save As Or Open

Q: Word Crashes When Trying To Save As Or Open

OK,

I have a problem here. I can open microsoft word, excel, etc. with no problem, however, when I try to open a previous document or save-as (through file-open) it will crash when I select a different folder in the open box.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office and getting all of the updates and I still have the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I cannot work until this is fixed!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi All,

I work on a web application that has Excel and Word documents in it.

At the moment when a user opens these documents in IE9 they get presented with a dialog box asking:

What do you want to do with "filename"?

The user is presented with Open, Save and Save As as the options.

Unlike previous versions of IE there is no check box to tick to remember the user's choice so it comes up every time.

I really need to get rid to this box. Does anyone know how to disable it?

Thanks

Tom

Hi everyone!I very rarely post as I usually find the fix from others online -- but this ones got me at a loss. When trying to save a file in word, as soon as the box opens up showing the navigation folder, word crashes with the "Microsoft Office Word has stopped working". In Firefox, when I click a picture and try to save, it does not crash when the folder navigation pops up -- but if I try to change the folder, thats when it will crash.I feel I should note, I recently had the google redirect virus three times...I guess it never fully cleared. In my attempts to clear this I made quite a few changes and this last time I ran combofix. I should note, though, that this problem was prior to running combofix.I have been working on this for a week straight to no avail. I have tried so many things I'm not sure I can remember them all, but here are some. I used the Microsoft Fix-it Solution Center and ran "Diagnose and repair Windows File and Folder Problems automatically" and "Fix Windows system performance problems on slow Windows computers". No fix.I ran windows startup recovery. I do not have the Vista discs as they never came w/ my computer and when the BBY Geeksquad "optimized" my computer they messed up the gateway built-in recovery. I never had it fixed -- regretting that now.I ran SFC scannow repair. The only file it could not repair was settings.ini for sidebar (which I dont use). I renamed it settings.ini.old and started sideb... Read more

What about...uinstalling the offending applications...seeing if you have other system problems...then reinstalling same?FWIW: If you have an OEM system (HP, Lenovo, etc.) and it requires recovery disks to reinstall...I suggest that you acquire such ASAP.Let's try this.Download/install BlueScreenView, http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html .Double-click BlueScreenView.exe file. When the auto-scan is done (screen comes up), click Edit/Select All...then File/Save Selected Items .Save the report as BSOD.txt.Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content and paste it into your next reply.Louis

Do you mean on a network that a word opens in read view versus print view? If so in word go Tools>Options>uncheck "Allow starting in reading..."(see attached). Hope that's what you meant.

Says I can't open document because 'word has insufficient memory' -- I'm assuming this is related to the 62% resources free on bootup...should be 80 if i remember (this is win98) -- any ideas other than that as to why it won't save/open?

and if you agree its the resources problem - how to fix? This is my cousin's old machine...IBM Aptiva...i think it's a duron, only 64mb dedicated system memory...88 included onboard vram.

A:Word won't save or open files

I got system resources free up to 88% but it still won't open documents. If I open a document straight from my documents, it will open. But the 'open' command won't work in Word. I can't use the 'save' or 'save as' command.

I can open recent files though in the 'file' menu. Any ideas? Seems really weird.

Also, appears to be true in all Microsoft applications, not just Word.

When I click save as in the file menu or even just click save for the first time in a new document nothing happens. No save as box, no error messages, nothing. However if I close the program I get the do you wish to save changes box and then the save as window opens. Is there anyway I can get it to just save normally. As i'm sure you can imagine its a real pain to have to quit word whenever I want to save something, not to mention the fact that i'm taking a crap shoot as to wether it will actually save my document or force me to lose everything.

Hi guys,

I have a question that has stumped me so far. Here is the scenario: I am dealing with a spreadsheet that has several tabs on it. In each tab, there are several word, powerpoint, and pdf documents that are embedded as objects. My task is to write a macro, that will for each document (keep in mind its an embedded object that needs to be opened), open it with the appropriate program, and save it using a pre-assigned name (the name of the column heading and the row it is in) to a predetermined folder path. This process needs to be duplicated about 200 times. I'm not sure if this is even possible, but I know enough about vba to believe that it is. I've been working on it since yesterday, and I can't seem to tie the pieces together. Can anyone help on this?

Thanks!

Hello. I recently switched to Word 2013. It's taking some getting used to.

In prior versions of Word when I would "save as" or "open" I would get a folder list. If it were the first time since I had opened the program it would be my default setting: in my case, "My Documents." If I had opened a document and tried to "save as" it would show the most recent folder I had opened.

In Word 2013 instead of a folder list I get a list of recent documents. I also get a choice of Recent Documents, One Drive, Computer and Add a Place. This requires that I go through extra clicks to get to the proper folder. Is there a way to switch to a folder view?

By the way, what is this One Drive business?

Do I need to Add a Place each time I open a folder?

Thank you.

A:Word 2013 Issues: Open File; Save As; One Drive, etc.

You can select a default folder to save to, or set the default to Computer, and then navigate to the folder you want to save to -- File>Options>Save, check Save to Computer by default. You can select your default folder here as well.
When Saving As, you should be seeing a list of recent folders you've saved to, to the right of the OneDrive and Computer options.

If you have an outlook.com, live.com or hotmail.com email address, you can download the OneDrive application to your desktop and use it to save and sync files and folders to storage in the cloud. If you don't have email accounts with any of those, you can ignore the OneDrive option.

On Microsoft Word 2010, when you go to either the Open or Save as dialog boxes, you see a folder tree called "Microsoft Word", under which in my computer has Templates. In Microsoft Excel, it has a similar affect, showing "Microsoft Excel". I want to remove this tree from view, and ONLY want to see "Computer" (or "This PC" on Windows 8.1). Is this possible, and if so, how?

Can this be done locally and/or through group policy?

Hello Everyone,

I'd like to write a .bat file that will save and close all open Word documents, then quit Word or terminate the Word process.

How in the world would I do that? I'm a complete novice at .bat files!

Also, could the .bat file be triggered only after Word has been unused/idle for a specified time?

I look forward to your responses!

Jay

A:.bat file to save and close all open Words docs, then quit Word

Hi,

Killing the word process wouldn't be too difficult but that would be on a schedule rather than x amount of idle minutes.
I don't believe a .bat file would be able to save any open workbooks though.

Are you able to provide some background on why this is needed and maybe there is an alternate method?

Regards,
Jamie

For several months now (almost a year) I have had a very frustrating issue with my IBM laptop running Vista. Whenever I have both MS Word 2007 and IE7 open together, and try to close an IE7 tab, the entire IE will crash. It will give me a typical error message such as "Internet Explorer has stopped working."

Thing I have done to try to fix this problem:

1) Reset all Internet Expolorer Settings (under Internet Options, advanced settings, reset)
2) Disabled all add-ons (using manage add-ons)
3) Tried starting IE7 in Cleanboot mode (running msconfig and disabling all services and startup programs)
4) Uninstalled and reinstalled MS Word
5) Deleted programs that were installed on or around the day that problem began.

Still the problem persists. In my event viewer, the application error I receive most frequently is:

Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.16809, time stamp 0x496e9a04, faulting module MFC80U.DLL, version 8.0.50727.762, time stamp 0x45713438, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000c33fc, process id 0xb5c, application start time 0x01c9b5316f65adcd.

This issue goes away if I'm under another user account on my computer, which makes me think it's some kind of setting issue and not necessarily a problem with a program, but I don't know. I am really at my wits end and have no idea how to solve this.

I have two problems with Word 2003.

First, regardless of any changes made to a document, when I close the application I do not get a prompt asking if I want to save the changes.

Second, I cannot open more than one document at a time. If I have a document open, and I try to open a second document, it flashes the second document on the screen briefly and then closes it, leaving me with my first document open. There are no windows minimized to the taskbar, and there are no documents (other than the first document I opened) listed in the Window menu of Word.

I have installed all updates and service packs (both for Office 2003 and for Windows XP), and I am not using any 3rd party add-ins. I even tried uninstalling all Office related applications and reinstalling. No dice.

This has been going on for quite some time now, and I cannot find ANY information that seems to relate. I am begging for help here, so anything is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Suddenly I have a computer that won't handle and aspx operation properly. A website has a button you click to generate a report, in word doc form. But now instead of opening as a word doc, you're prompted to open or save a .aspx file. The aspx file opens in notepad, but that's part of the problem, because it should be creating and opening a *.docx file not an *docx.aspx file.

This works fine on other computers, and worked fine on this computer until a few days ago.

I have tried:
Mucking around with different security settings in IE,
Looked at file extensions, tried setting them to open aspx with word or with IE,
Tried the aspx file association reg fix on this site.
Tried repairing office
Tried sfc /scannow (found no integrity violations)

Nothing has worked.

I seem to recall figuring this out before, but I can't remember what I did.

Hiya,
Word 2007 (on vista 32 bit) crashed this morning. It won't open again without crashing. It opens the window, I can see that it is asking me to open the recued document, on the left side, but then it crashes... looks for a problem... nothing... then it says "An Unknown error has occured" - but the litle window has "Endnote x1" in the header. - I have Endnote X1, obviously, and they don't work wonderfully together, but never this kind of problem.
I've installed all the recent service packs, in the last few days. Word updates itself I'm pretty sure. Explorer crashes all the time, I think that it adobe related though *sigh*.

Any ideas? I can't even get in to check on anything like add-ins.

A:Word crashes on open, trying to 'rescue' a doco from first crash

Ok, so i've 'repaired' office. And Removed Endnote - that made a change.

Its back to nearly working, crashes when I try to close, or when I try to remove the endnote add-ins. I've removed them from their folder, but somehow they appear in the active add-ins??? Any idea how I can delete them, or show Word they are deleted???

Hi All:
For over a year now I have had problems trying to save files in a different place to that suggested by Vista e.g. Vista might suggest saving a file to C:\User\Documents\ (say) but I want to save it to D:\Subject\File name. As soon as I enter the new location Word promptly crashes. (It will save to the original suggested location with no problem).
I thought that this was an MS Office 2003 problem and uninstalled MS Office and installed "Open Office" instead. However, exactly the same problem occurs, so it would seem to be down to Vista (Basic).

Anyone seen this one before?

I am using an Acer 5051 laptop, 2GHz uP, 2GB RAM, 60GB HDD, VISTA Basic OS.

All and any help appreciated.

One of my user is having this problem on her Windows XP PC:

Dell GX260 with Windows XP Professional running 512MB RAM, Office XP, Acrobat 5.0

When opening a Word file & edited in Word XP, the user cannot SAVE or use SAVE AS the file, when try to exit out the file, get prompt to either SAVE, CLOSE, or CANCEL the file, at that point it will still not save the file, the only way to exit the file is to hit CLOSE to exit.

I initially thought this might be a Word Xp problem, so I ran the repair tool in Office XP, that did not fix it.

I then uninstalled Office XP, reinstalled Office XP, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then ran the Office update to download the latest patches from MicroSoft, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then UNINSTALLED Acrobat 5.0 from the PC, that FIXED the problem.

WITHOUT Acrobat 5.0 on her PC, the user was now able to open & edit a Word file, and able to SAVE the edited file, also able use SAVE AS to save the file as a new copy.

I then reinstalled Acrobat 5.0 thinking the previous copy of Acrobat 5.0 on the PC might be corrupted, as soon as Acrobat 5.0 was back on the PC, the same problem with the SAVE feature came back in Word XP.

I then installed the patch update for Acrobat 5.0, that did not fix the problem.

At this point, I am out of clues on how to fix it....The user tried Acrobat 6.0 before on the same PC, but decided to reverse back to Acrobat 5.0 because of format problem with 6.0.......so Acrobat 6.0 is no... Read more

I searched all over the web and micorsoft's web site. I tried every suggestion made such as:

Disconnect net work drives.
Rename Normal.dotm
Run office diagnostics
Disconnect HP Printers
Finally this worked:

and run Mr. Fixit.

I hope this saves you some time. I spent over 2 hours.

Running Windows 7 on my desktop. (MS Word on my Windows 10 Dell laptop is trouble-free.) It constantly freezes (every 3rd or 4th time I save during an editing session) on save or save as....have to reboot the program. Happens on all docs. Looked this issue up online, the "solutions" didn't work for anyone. I uninstalled/reinstalled to no avail....it was solid for 3 days, now back to freezing. Any ideas?

I am running XP and Word 2000 and Nortons. Word will crash if you leave the document open for a while (there is no specific time frame) and then select close (icon). The error - Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. The details are: AppName: winword.exe
appver 9.0.0.3822
Modname: kernel32.dll
modvers: 5.1.26002180
offset 0001eb33

This has pretty much happened since I got this laptop. I have reformatted and reinstalled everything (due to another problem) and still have the same problem with word. I have used the same CD on other computers to install word and they do not have the same problem.

I use a variety of templates and plain documents in my work and can not pin point it to one template.

If you leave Word open with a document (no matter what size) and come back to it later this is when the problem happens. I started to get around it my saving first then closing, but this no longer works. The save completes and then I select Close and this is when it happens - you get the dreaded pause and then you hear the whirl of the computer and then you get the Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. Firstly I could put up with it but is now just a nusiance.

I have a Toshiba A55 laptop. I am running XP Home SP2 and Office Professional 2003 SP2. All utilites function normally with the exception of Word. The file menu shows "save" and "save as" to be disabled (greyed out). It will save with control-S, and I am able to save to any location I want. I am not receiving any error messages. All updates for XP and Office are current. No viruses or other malware. I have seen issues with Ofice SP2 concerning HP systems but they usually either lock up or generate errors. I do not have either of these problems. I have been looking for a solution for a few days to no avail. Any suggestions would be helpful.

A:Word 2003 save/save as disabled

I found my own solution. Apparently, the normal.dot template became corrupted. Deleted the file, and did not let word reload the saved version, creating a new one. Fixed the problem. Wanted to post in case someone else was dealing with the same issue.

Trying to figure out a global issue with are new  Windows 7 image at work in IE.  We have old PC's that we are replacing and on the PC's we are using an updated Windows 7 image but has the same IE 11 version 11.0.9600.18738CO on both images.
The difference though is that there is no security prompt to open PDF files on the old image.  On the new one we get the prompt to Open, save or save-as and trying to find a way to remove it.  Our guy that built the image did not set the Group
Policy intentionally if there is one for this.  I can't find a way to remove the prompt in GPedit.msc, missing the "Launching applications and unsafe file" is missing but yet i see the option under security settings in IE.  The radio buttons
are grayed out from making changes in that window.

Any thoughts?

I am running Vista and Word 2007. I would like to save the document as a Word 2003 document so it can be opened in older versions of Word. I use "save as" and select Save as Word 97-2003, but when I try to open this document on an older machine "Windows XP and Word 2003" it opens with a lots of symbols and then the text is jumbled into one continuous paragraph.

I know there is a complatibility pack that can be downloaded for Word 2003 that will allow users to open Word 2007 documents, but I would still like to be able to "save as" Word 97-2003 so people without this compatability pack can still open this document.

Any help?

Thanks,
Danny

I'm running Word 2013. Up till a week or so it worked fine, but now it freezes completely whenever I try to save or save as a document, new or modified, in my C:\Users\Tom\Documents folder, even though it does seem to save or save as correctly if I choose subfolders in ...documents or other separate folders.

I have tried running Word in safe mode. No help.

I have done a complete repair using control panel/programs...no help. It seemed to have uninstalled MS Office 2013 completely and reinstalled it completely, and nothing improved. One minor problem I have with this is that I've lost my product key from the original version, and I can't retrieve it from Dell, where I bought the machine, so I can't activate the reinstalled MS Office 2013! It'll run till next Tuesday, then it'll be dead. My bad, but that's not what's causing me this grief.

I have checked the hard drive with AVG PCTuneup disk doctor and found no errors. I've defragged with that routine also; no help.

I've tried running Word with and without first launching any browser. The problem occurs whether or not I've launched a browser.

To my untrained eye, it seems as if whenever I try to point Word to my normal ...documents folder, to retrieve a doc stored there so I can work on it, or save a new doc there that I've just created, or "save as" a doc I've retrieved from a different folder, Word can't find that spot on my hard drive. But i... Read more

In this thread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic458779.html/page__st__15__gopid__2770461#entry2770461
I asked for help with problems that were occurring after Avast found a malware infection on my computer.

Right now what is happening:

When I open a Word file, it freezes & then crashes (details below) often w/in 10-20 minutes of opening the file, but occasionally it has been longer (it went 3 hours once). Sometimes it happens when I am doing resource intensive things with an image dense document, other times it has happened when I have left the computer and the document is just sitting here open.

This often coincides with an extreme slowdown of everything running on the computer (though each has occurred separately).

I went through the suggestions for dealing with slow computers frex:

I have:

- cleaned computer
- went through Firefox troubleshooting checklist
- cleaned hard drive (used CCleaner)
- ran SFC
- ran Chkdsk
- checked for problem entries in Device Manager
- checked DMA status (already enabled)
- defraged system
- defraged page files
- checked for unnecessary running services
- verified Windows indexing system was disabled
- Disabled visual effects
- disabled Ctfmon.exe
- disabled mdm.exe
- ran TFC
- tried doing a clean boot
- a number of things I believe were directly related to the malware checking/repairing (OTL, ESET, aswMBR, DDS,
- uninstalled & reinstalled Word multiple times (including 2 fresh downloads - legal, I hasten to add&#... Read more

This is a weird problem I've not seen before and I could use some help or someone to point me in the right direction. I searched the forum with no luck.
I'm assuming this is an issue related only to my machine and not an IE7 problem.
:-(

When I click on this link (or one in similar format on the same page), the new window will initially begin to open. Then the new browser instance is redirected to another site....which seems fine & the page switches to the new address, then suddenly the window disappears and the "File Download-Security Warning" box appears and asks if I want to save the file or find a program online to open it with:
Program Name: browserRedirect
Type: Unknown File Type
From: ax.phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net

Clicking on "Find" takes me to the Windows File Association web page where it says that windows does not recognize this MIME type.

Here's the actual link:
//click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=DKrkLM3KmGA&offerid=78941&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fphobos.apple.com%252FWebObjects%252FMZStore.woa%252Fwa%252FviewAlbum%253Fi%253D27672884%2526id%253D27672964%2526s%253D143441%2526partnerId%253D30
If I need to register a file type, I don't where to start! I scrolled through all the file types in My Computer and honestly, I'm at a loss as to what to do.
Could this be related to some corrupted mime file or something?

A user tries to download a PDF from a government site by selecting a checkbox for the document and hitting Download Document button. The file download box comes up with "Downloading file... Open/Save/Cancel". When she hits Open, the box dismisses and the download progress box appears. Almost immediately, however, the file download box reappears but this time Open is grayed out, forcing the user to save it before it will be downloaded and opened. On any other computer in the office, the file will open right up. I have checked the internet settings and they seem correct. What would cause this to happen just to this one user? Or, what can I do to fix it?

Hi

Win7 Ultimate

I hope I can explain this clearly.

When I go to an Open or Save dialog box in any application and I click on any folder any where in Windows outside of the application, the Save as... or Open dialog for that application switches to that folder, which is great feature because it quickly enables me to change the location in those dialogs. It's not currently working.

My question is, where is the setting the enables or disables that functionality.

Thank you for any help

After virus removal IE not able to open save or open files from the web.

- I have ran malwarebytes, awdcleaner, comboxfix, and tdsskiller.
- I have check settings in IE to make sure downloading was enabled
- all other browser work fine ... chrome, firefox
- I have taken IE off the machine by turning off IE in windows services via uninstall programs, rebooted and ran ccleaner, then re-enabled IE...still cannot download and save files
- I have rest IE...still same issue.

The only thing other thing I have found online regarding this is that IE may have lost it admin rights or something like that. have any of you ran across this issue before?

Hello lawrance,
Generally this is my full I.E. Reset directions >>
This should be done with Internet Explorer open (even if you are having problems with it), not Firefox / Chrome or another browser.

Click Tools or the Gear icon at the top of the browser > Go down the list to click on Internet Options > Go across to the last tab that should be Advanced >  Click on Advanced and then Reset (near the bottom) > You should get a Confirm box pop up > Tick Delete Personal Settings and now Reset.
This last part may be where the infection changed things -

While there > Go back to Connections Tab, and down to LAN Settings. Open this and check that the only box ticked is Automatically Detect Settings, and untick any others. Click OK >Apply if you changed anything and OK again.

Back to the General Tab and make sure your Home Page is entered correctly in the box. Re-set it if not, clock Apply and OK to close out
Once the settings have all been reset, Close that box. Close any other open boxes. Now close I.E. and Reboot your computer.

Let us know if this helped -
