Issue with installing printer - accidentally set windows to not detect it

Q: Issue with installing printer - accidentally set windows to not detect it

During the phase of printer installation when the software asks to plug in the printer, windows popped up and asked it I wanted it to find software for the printer. I accidentally clicked the option where windows wouldn't bother with the printer (I forget how it was phrased exactly), and now the actual installation software wont detect the printer.

Anyone have any idea how I can make windows refind the printer?

I'm running Vista 64-bit. Thanks much!

Preferred Solution: Issue with installing printer - accidentally set windows to not detect it

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Issue with installing printer - accidentally set windows to not detect it

Check Device Manager (Start->Run-> Devmgmt.msc) for any yellow queried devices (ie your printer specifically)
Then right click on it and select remove (it may say Delete or Uninstall)
Then restart, and try installing again

That is because the hard disk is formatted to a type that Windows does not recognize. F11 does not work because the HP Recovery Manager in the D: partition was deleted during the Ubuntu install. The following HP Partner sells recovery kits.  (in the US and Canada only) They do have a recovery kit for your notebook for $27.00 USD. See the following link.http://www.computersurgeons.com/search.aspx?searchterm=dv6-6c53cl In Europehttp://www.best2serve.com/page/rcd_landing An HP recovery disk set or usb  recovery media is the least expensive way to return Windows to your notebook. Otherwise, you will have to pay for a complete licensed Windows OS installer and that can be expensive. The next time you see "click here to install to hard disk", don't do it. You will need to use a Windows install disk of any kind to return your hard disk to a format that Windows can recognize.

Laptop says Printer is Offline when I try to print. I've downloaded the driver from Canon (Pixma MP780) to my new laptop but it can't install it. Installation wizard gives a message like "Driver installation was not complete". Then I get the message "Caution" Cannot detect the printer port. Check that the printer is on and that the cable is connected. If the port has not been detected even though it is connected, disconnect the cable from the printer and then reconnect it." It works when the laptop is plugged directly into the printer but I get the Offline message when wireless (using Linksys wrg54 router). I also tried to configure the port (just to see what happens) and get the message "An error occurred during configuration. This operation is not supported"

The printer is connected to a desktop running xp sp3. There is another laptop wirelessly connected and which prints ok. I think it's an xp machine.

Ok... I put a new hard drive in a Dell Precision Workstation 390. It apparently had some sort of Raid ADHD (probably have those initials messed up... but it kind of describes the way I'm feeling )

It has two hard drives.

The new hard drive is the OS/Boot drive. It was a 1tb drive, so I thought I might experiment and partition it down into two smaller drives - thinking that the bootable portion might boot faster if the drive was smaller, plus - thinking the other drive could act as an additional storage drive that wouldn't bog down the Boot Drive Partition. Is that thinking flawed?

Anyway... I tried putting XP back on and I kept getting this error saying that 'Cannot find a drive'..... something to that effect.

So, I got into the Bios... and changed the type of Raid to a different one... and eventually it seemed that it might work... XP installed, but everything was jack-screwed in that the video drivers weren't there, etc, etc.

So, I thought, I'm going to stick in my Windows 7 upgrade (which I was saving for another computer) and see if I can just boot off that disk, wipe off the other OS and maybe the newer Windows 7 would work.

Well.... it DID work!

Only problem is, I discovered that now I get the Windows Boot Manager everytime I boot the computer and it wants me to decide between "Windows 7 or a Previous Installation." I selec... Read more

A network printer (HP5200), installed at worked when first installed on one particular PC. The PC was shut down. The next day, when the PC was booted up, it could not see the printer. However, it could see and print to another network printer. Other PCs on the same network continue to access both printers. The IP address for the PC in question is: I have deleted and reinstalled the printer at least twice, deleted the port and rebuilt it then installed the printer, disabled the anti-virus software and reinstalled, all to no avail.

Any suggestions?

I just bought an Epson Workforce printer, model WF-3620.
I have a HP desktop that I bought last May. It came with
Windows 8 but I think I upgraded to Windows 10 & I'm not
sure where to find out what the current OS is.

The printer can be connected by wire, but no wire was supplied with it.
It can also be connected wirelessly. Since I don't have a network, the
Epson support said I could connect with direct wifi.

She walked me through the steps of setting up direct wifi on the printer.
Then she tried to take me to where that wifi would be detected & listed
by my computer. However, it seems that the computer does not detect
the printer's wifi. It is not listed. She told me that the problem is probably
with Windows & I need to contact Microsoft.

Well, I've looked through a number of Microsoft's support articles and
not found anything helpful, and I can't find how to contact Microsoft.

Does anyone here know what the problem might be & how to solve it?

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me to get my issue solved.
Long story short, I have a Toshiba Satellite L305-S5908 which use to run Vista.  I recently wiped clean the entire HD (yes I did back-up everything).  I then started installing Windows 7 but when it asked during the install "where to install Windows 7" it was not showing the HD.
In another forum they suggested (at this point of the install - "where to install Windows 7") to select shift + F10, and type in DISKPART.  I followed those steps but got stuck (as you see below).   Now I have no clue what to do.  Could someone please give me suggestions that have worked?

I'm running Windows 7 Home 64bit. About a week ago, I had an issue with internet connectivity which some fine people here were able to sort out for me. Basically, I found that I couldn't reliably access the internet unless I changed my DNS settings to Open DNS. After I did that, I found I could no longer print any documents even though Windows was still communicating with the printer. I ended up telling Windows to remove the printer and FAX in the hopes of just setting it up again.

However, that didn't work and Windows cannot find the printer at all. I've tried connecting via WLAN and via WPS but even though the printer finds the connection point to the router, Windows can't detect the printer.

My printer is a Canon PIXMA MX922. I've tried contacting Canon but chat but even their email tech support is giving me error messages.

I am not sure how to proceed from here. Could you please help?

Trying to install a Canon MF5750 Printer on windows 8.1. Canon has a driver for this printer and windows 8.1 64.
My primary problem is that when I get to the point of selecting a port, I am unsure of what to do. My choices are LPT 1-4, COM 1-4, FILE, and PORTPROMPT, none of which would seem to represent a usb port. By crawling through the Device Manager listings, I should have plenty of usb 2 and 3 ports. So my question is what happened to my usb ports. An additional observation is that while the printer and fax functions are installed (though not working) the scan function is not installed.

A:Installing a usb printer on Windows 8.1

According to the setup manual, the drivers should be installed before plugging in the USB cable. Did you perhaps plug in the USB cable first? Also I notice some USB is even sensitive to which end of the cable is plugged in first. I've had external drives that acted like dead doornail if I plugged the wrong end in first(but of course the setup info gave no indication it mattered.)

I have a problem with my pc. I have made a stupid mistake. My pc was busy installing windows updates BUT I was in a rush and thought it was finished. So I unplugged the pc and boom it hit me it was still busy installing. Blond moment!

So when I turned it on again the next morning it took me to system restore and I though ok now the problem is sorted because it restarted and everything look ok.

BUT when I shut down it was busy installing updates again so I waited and though ok this is normal and it switch off it self like it was suppose.

The next day I turned my pc back on again and guess what is took me to system restore again. This keeps on happening now. Please help how can I fix this issue???

A:Accidentally switched off computer - busy installing win updates

Hello blouogies and welcome to Seven Forums.

When your computer "takes you to system restore" are you saying it's automatically selecting a restore point for you to use or are you seeing either a restore screen or a recovery screen?

Have you tried to manually access System Restore to select a restore point of your own choosing (option one) to a date/time before the blond moment?

System Restore

If you aren't able to access other restore points I'd suggest running a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two) to see if your computer sufered any damaged or corrupt system files during the unintentional shut down. If any problems are noted run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Please post back if any of this helps or not.

Hello techieguy, and welcome to Windows Seven Forums! Nice to meet you.

You could try plugging the printer into the 7 pro 32 machine and allow windows to install the driver. See if you are able to print directly. Then put the printer back on the XP machine and setup the device (the printer) again as a networked printer and check.

Hey guys,

I know this may be a silly question... but I just upgraded to windows x64 edition, and everything works great. Downloaded the 64-bit drivers for my video card, and sound card.

My problem is, that there are no 64-bit drivers out for my printer, nor my scanner at the moment. Is there a way to (or a wizard) to install my printer and/or scanner on a 64 bit operating system using 32 bit drivers?

I heard of a wizard called "WoW" that is supposibly in windows x64 that is supposed to help 32 bit applications run on the 64 bit... but i dont know if it will help with driver installation.

any ideas? or am i sol?

A:Installing printer and scanner on Windows x64

Check with the printer and scanner manufacturers and see if they have beta drivers. If not you're out of luck. You have to use 64bit drivers. Its going to be the same nightmare everyone went through when XP came out. Older periferals are abandoned and it takes forever to get stable drivers for newer products.

Hi guys,

I was trying to search the web and this forums for an answer to this question but I couldn't find any sing of solution...

Problem is with this single PC in our LAN that is running windows 7 pro.
Whenever user reboots the computer and tries to print something on our shared printer he will be prompt with the re install driver message.

Other PCs are using shared printer without any issue and there are all kinds of PCs, running XP, Windows 7 x64, Windows 7 x86 etc...

Although after re-installation printing is successful this can be quite frustrating as sometimes happens few times on a daily basis.

Any ideas why this is happening?

btw, there is only one user account on problematic PC and that user account has administrator privileges.

Upgrade from Win 98 to Win 2000 Pro now the PC won't detect printer in LPT 1. I have uninstalled the Driver and restarted. It picks up the LPT 1 port but not the printer. When I go to the device manager and go to the LPT1 properties and switch it to LPT2 it acts like it picks up the printer and installs the driver but when I go to print it says there is no printer hooked up to the PC

Any help is appreicated

Hello thegreatone,

try this,
Goto control panel, double-click the system icon. Click the hardware tab, and click 'device manager'. Expand the 'lpt/com port' group. Right click the 'printer port' item, and select 'properties'. Turn on the 'Enable Legacy plug & play detection' checkbox.
Repeat your install. Hope this helps.

Very frustrated.

Macbook Pro OSX 10.6.5
Canon MX870
Linksys wrt54g router

The printer finds the network. It says the connection is active - and if I unplug the router that changes to inactive, and back to active when I plug back in. So I feel the printer - router connection is OK.

The computer finds the network fine - evidenced by the fact that I'm wirelessly on the internet now.

The setup software tells me the printer can't be detected. I've played with a few of the alphabet soup of settings on the router page - but none seem to have any effect.

Would greatly appreciate any guidance.

A:Cant detect wireless printer

For anyone else with this problem:

This helped:

After reseting the printer system click add a printer and select the MX870. It also shows up as a bonjour scanner. I just selected the printer first and it worked fine. Suspected I might not be able to scan if I didn't select the scanner as well so I did that too. I don't have time to try and scan something but the printer still works wirelessly.

Hope that helps someone.

For some reason, when I try to click the plus sign on "NEXTSTEPLAB" a drop down menu will not pop up!
This computer is extremely slow (the company is pinching its pennies). However, it should still still eventuallydrop down.

I am trying to connect to a networked printer through LAN.

Please see the attached image so you'll have a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Please help!

When clicking "Nextsteplab" on a faster, wireless computer, it drops down fine, but with a little lag as well.

We have three computers on home wifi network, all Win 7, one Home Premium, other two Pro.
Canon MX6220 AIO printer printed wireless from all three. It has now stopped printing wireless from my Home Premium unit, so I must use USB.
I have email replies from Canon, and have done all they suggested, including downloading latest MP drivers from their site.
On attempting to set up the printer for wifi from the computer, it keeps telling me that it cannot detect a printer. This has repeated for, probably, at least six attempts.
What am I, and Canon, overlooking?
Glad to provide added info, if it is needed.

I can't seem to find anything about my specific problem. I had an HP PSC 2410 all-in-one series printer connected to a Dlink print server. The printer started making terrible noises when it started up, so I disconnected it and reconnected an old deskjet instead. I recently fixed the all-in-one (turned out i just needed to clean the scanning glass and mirrors), but the print server no longer powers up. Now here's the real issue:

I can't get the printer to install locally via USB port. I was finally able to delete the network printer (it kept coming back after reboot, offline), but I can' get Windows to auto-detect and install the drivers. I can't even download the drivers from the HP website because they aren't available (windows update only). I can't manually add the printer either, because the virtual USB port is unavailable. I'd really like to get this printer running again, especially because I brought it back from the dead and I really need to scanner. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The printer is an old HP LaserJet P2015 connected to a Windows 7 Pro (32-bit) machine.  Every morning, when the user boots the computer up and logs in, that printer will show as an unknown device under Devices and Printers.  The actual printer
icon for the P2015 will be grayed out.  If you just turn the printer off and back on the unknown device goes away, and the P2015 icon will go back to ready.  I have tried multiple USB cable and ports on the computer and a powered USB hub.  I've
tried multiple drivers, and the only one that really wants to work is the actual HP driver for the P2015 (which took a while to find).  The HP universal print drivers all have their own quirks with it.  I've adjusted power setting for maximum efficiency,
ran sfc /scannow, ran chkdsk /r, and some other things that I cannot remember.  Is there anything I can try that I didn't list?

Ok I have an HP deskjet 3520 that is hooked into my FreeBSD server. The FreeBSD is all good and not one problem there. Now the problem is trying to get it to use on XP sp2 boxes. I can not see it in network places and I have tried to add it via local port method that has worked before but it says my local port is access denied. How do I turn it on?
