Using desktop PC as WiFi router

Q: Using desktop PC as WiFi router

So I've tried setting up my desktop PC to create a hotspot so my mobile phone could get a WiFi internet connection at home.
However, I've run into some problems.

I used some guide I found online that used the Command Prompt to set up a hotspot using two lines:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=Test key=testingnetwork
netsh wlan start hostednetwork

And this seemed to work fine (phone connected and I went online on it). However, I wanted this network to start automatically everytime I started up the PC. So I put those lines in a batch file and used the task scheduler to set that .bat file to run everytime I log in (using administrator rights).
However, it seemed that now my phone did connect to the network (WiFi connection symbol appeared), but I didn't receive any data. When I tried to run the script again, the first line executed fine, but when I tried to activate the network, I got this message:
"The hosted network couldn't be started.
The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation."

And in the network settings, the created network didn't show up.
Any idea what might be going wrong?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I use a Lap and my neighbour a Desktop, he's receiving a "IP address conflict error" in his system, due to which his internet connection is getting disrupted. If I don't use my Wifi router and connect directly through the LAN cable he does not face any problem. But I need my router back . So, how do I resolve this problem. Pls Help Thank U

I am trying to get my parents Kindle Fire to work. They recently purchased a Motorola Modem/Router which is hooked into the desktop and works fine. I want to get their new kindle to work and can not seem to figure it out. Their operating system is Vista which I can upgrade to Windows 7 if that would make it easier. When I click on setup the WiFi part of the installation wizard cd that came with the Motorola it says there is not a network adapter. I know what that is however I do not know why I would need it when the desktop is hooked directly into modem/router and I just need the WiFi for Kindle. Is there a simpler way to get this working? I figured I would try you as you are the expert in this field. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you

My home setup consists of one desktop computer running Windows 7 Professional (no network).  The ISP cable comes out of the wall, into the cable modem, then out of the cable modem and into the computer.  In this setup, I have always been able (while
traveling) to use MS Remote Desktop on my notebook computer to remotely log in to my home computer.
I recently purchased a NetGear R6400 WIFI router.  This changed my setup at home by introducing the router in between the cable modem and my home computer.  Although the WIFI part of the router is working just fine (by allowing wireless devices
to connect to the Internet), I am no longer able to use my notebook computer while traveling to remotely log in to my home computer use MS Remote Desktop.  I called tech. support at NetGear, and they spent 2-3 hours trying to troubleshoot this issue (by
changing many configuration options on the router), but were ultimately unsuccessful.  They suggested that I contact MS to see whether there are any settings that need to be changed within the Control Panel of Windows 7 in order to fixed this problem.
I'd appreciate any help with this.
Thanks!

Hi,

I recently bought dlink D2750U WIFI ADSL modem/router, for my ADSL internet connection.

But I have now changed my ISP, who provide internet via cable(not telephone line). The ISP guy provides a cable modem(old modem) along with it.

I have connected my PC this way:
Cable modem -> Router -> PC through RJ45. I am able to access internet from my PC, but I am not able to get wifi working on the router. And I am logging onto internet through a dial up connection.
Questions:
1) Please help in configuring the router to get wifi working.
2) Also, my default gateway seems to be either 0.0.0.0 or blank. So, I am not able to login to the modem unless I remove the modem connection. Please let me know if I am doing anything wrong here.

Here are a few more details:
Output of ipconfig: http://pastebin.com/Zr9Eb7L7

A:Using dlink D2750U Wifi Modem/Router As a Wifi Router

Hey Narain. The D-Link unit you have appears to be a combo unit (modem and wireless router) since it connects straight to the RJ-11 phone line. This unit won't work with an ISP that provides service by way of coax cable. The D-Link will work if you want to use DSL, but you need a cable service compatible modem or combo modem/router if you use cable service.

I am looking to replace my tired Linksys WRT54G router that is about 10 years old. I love the router, and its even better with DD-WRT on it, but I'm starting to have troubles with the wifi dropping all the connects for a couple seconds when running all my wireless devices. I have 3 smart phones, 2 tablets, 1 Chromecast, a smart TV, and Roku + a laptop or 3 in my house right now, and it seems like its getting to be a bit much for it.
I have had to completely re-flash the firmware twice this year to get the wifi working again, so I'm thinking its time for replacement.
I have been thinking about just getting the new WRT54GL for $50, but I'm also thinking it might be a good idea to upgrade the wifi technology past wireless G .
I'm wondering if my Tablet (Nexu 9), and our smartphones (Razr HD Max) along with the Chromecast will take advantage of the new wireless standards and higher speeds or not? If they will can someone recomend a decent wireless router that takes DD-WRT nicely in the sub-$100 range? Thanks!

A:Looking for new Wifi Router - Will Tablet/Smartphone take advantage of new wifi Standards?

I been programming in Android/Linux since 2010 and there is code that supports VHT is Very High Throughput. Right now the standards are HT is High Throughput .

As for DD-WRT firmware is like your overclocking your router pushing it beyond the OEM limits. I use to use DD-WRT but had quit many years ago since the routers that used that firmware would fail too much.

So best to buy a better business type enterprise router wired then you can use WiFi router as AP or just get WiFi AP(access point). To me WiFi Router is also Wired Router, but to use just a wired router and use WiFi AP through a switch is better. If one or the other goes you can easy replace them. Where as if the WiFi Router fails you would need to replace it.

If you really want to use DD-WRT then Look at Buffalo WiFi Routers some come pre-installed with DD-WRT on them. Frankly you really don't need DD-WRT today because newer routers or WiFi routers are much better built and offer much more power NPU = network processor units and 128, 256, 512, 1GB of RAM some have Dual Cores.

What I want is to be able to use a Tablet to read in the rear of my home (which is out of range for incoming wifi signal.)

If I can set up the computer to do this, I will cable connect to a router in that area.
I have two computers and could use either.

1.a PC running XP (should update to windows 8.1, but have never bothered to do that, since XP works just fine. (I had this computer sharing to the router, when I had DSL internet connection, using Windows wizard to set it up) Couldn't get it to work when I switched to WIFI internet access) I could switch to win 7 or 8.1 if that would help.

2. a Lap Top running WIN 8.1,

Any help is appreciated.

A:Internet access via WIFI and share WIFI via second router

Due to the age of XP this is not the best option for what you want to do

Either windows 7 or 8.1 have access to Internet connection sharing (ICS) built in

To use ICS you need at least two connections to the local LAN, these can be any mix of wifi or Ethernet.

As you have a laptop you likely already have a system to use for this

There is a tutorial explaining the basics ... and more on this site

Hello, I am a bit of a hard time with 2 routers on one network and unfortunately as things stand now they both have to be there. So I just got ADSL and the only modem option available to me was one with a 4-port wired router, I hooked that up into my existing network of about 9 computers (5 laptops and 4 desktops) which is connected by another 4-port WiFi router.

I started out with my only goal of hooking 3 of these computers to the internet after I got the DSL by some MAC filtering configured in the WiFi router. But, having the DSL modem/router has created another issue. I am using 2 separate IP gateways for both the routers which are in the same subset, I can connect to both of them from all my machines. The problem is I don't have any control over which computer connects to what router. I am trying to avoid setting each PC up with a static IP that needs internet access.

Here is my setup in more detail. My ADSL router is 192.168.1.254 and my WiFi router is 192.168.1.111 and both have the subnet 255.255.255.0. My ADSL connection has dynamic IP and the modem/router is connected into a LAN port on the WiFi router. I have tried disabling DHCP on the modem/router and changed my WiFi router IP to that of the modem (which was counter productive) to no avail. Someone mentioned MAC address cloning but I am not sure if it will work in this setup. Since I configured this I am seeing quite a few IP conflicts, which are probably my fault as I didn't check when I was setting... Read more

You should run this tunnel adaptor remover first. Too many of these indicates a driver problem and it will also ruin your connection if there are too many of those tunnel adaptors. This problem happens all the time. Click and save the zip file, then run the zip file and reboot.

You might also considering using a different driver for this network adaptor. If the problem happens again it may help to remove the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter using device manager as it's known to cause connection problems such as you seem to be having.

I'm on the go quite often so I have connected to several wifi routers with no issues.  And there is my home. I am rarely here, but when I get here I can connect to my wifi router (2.4 GHz), but often experiencing unusually high pings (above 1000 ms). This happens on both OS-esI have the latest wireless driversIn Windows Device Manager I set everything I could to max the wifi performanceNo other device has this issue (two laptops, two smartphones, an USB wifi stick on my home network (not simultaneously of course))The environment should not be an issue. The router is 6-7 meters away, with two walls between the router and the laptop. I have an older Lenovo laptop next to this one (G580) and it has no issues at all. The laptop does not have this issue with other devicesThe issue is with the connection between the laptop and the router (I tried reaching the router's config site, same slowness)The network properties say that my connection link's speed is 27/27 MBPS, sometimes less, sometimes more, but I always have a strong signal There is only one other wifi router nearby and that's on a different channel. It is starting to get really annoying, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are several resons.1. The wifi signal might be too weak at the point where the computer is.2. Other device radiation/signals might be blocking it.3. Your router signal might be hodden (check EWS of router).4. Signal broadcasting might have been turned off on router. Since other signals are found on the computer, there shouldnt be a issue with your couputer.

Hello one and all,
I am sincerely hoping someone can assist with my little networking problem as i'm tearing my hair out now..

Here at work we have a Vigor Modem/Router hosting our connection to the world. It was originally on DHCP & the 4 computers & 2 printers found their own IP addresses without problem.

We added a Linksys router via ethernet (to a lan port not the wan) in another area of the yard. This was fine also on DHCP and connecting wirelessly from a laptop or mobile phone was a doddle.

Then our oh so wonderful IT geek decided to put the Vigor on a Static IP along with all the computers connected to it. This has some how cut off the wifi capability of the Linksys router now.

It is basically acting as a hub for two laptops and nothing else.

In simplistic terms with some detail what settings need changing on the Linksys if any?

The Vigors internal IP is 192.168.1.1
Linksys is 192.168.1.4
both on subnet 255.255.255.0

I have been advised to set the Linksys to a static IP on the Internet Connection option but what set of figures do i need for that??

Fingers crossed...

Hello,

I have a wireless adsl router in preparation for broadband arriving in our area soon (long story), and have some questions:

I have a laptop with wifi card and want to setup a home network with this, and my PC (plugged-in via LAN cable to the router).. laptop is XP, PC is Win2K
I can't seem to get this to work. one minute the PC can 'see' the laptop (in network neighbourhood) and then the other way round, but I can never access shared directories on either... is there a good guide somewhere to set this up?

Also, shouldn't I be able to use the router from the PC as if it were a wifi card?
i.e. on the laptop, once the wifi card is plugged in, it displays all wifi networks in the area and their signal strength etc.... how can I do this using the router/PC??

With the laptop I can connect to our neighbours wifi router and use their bradband connection, but I want to do the same from the PC.. is that possible?

Thanks in advance all..

(P.S. router is a D-Link DSL-604+)

there is a possibility that since your laptop has a built wireless adapter it is conflicting not with your desktop there is no wireless adapter installed or anything that may conflict another possible reason is the chip set of you adapter is compatible with the chip set on your desktop computer that is why they work well together.

Hi there

If you've a spare / old router which you can set up as a wifi bridge and connect a bit of LAN cable from Laptop into the Bridge router you'll generally get FAR better performance from even a cheap router.

Logic behind this is that most Wifi adapters are half duplex whereas a router is full duplex and throughput will be significantly better.

Another advantage is that you can still use 5 GHZ band even if your PC or whatever only can handle 2.4 GHZ wifi.

If your router doesn't have bridging facilities you can often do it by a firmware upgrade --for most routers try this :

www.dd-wrt.com | Unleash Your Router

Note --this is the Bridging router --not your main one that you use to connect to your ISP with --don't want to cause people to have inoperable boxes !!!!!.

I've found using a Router as a bridge far better than having to have loads of LAN cable all round the house --and also antennae in wifi routers are hugely better than most built in Wifi cards so you can in a lot of cases avoid extra slowdown caused by wifi extenders.

In my "man shed" -- a good 100 metres from the main house - could just about get 8 Mib/s on a very poor 2.4 GHZ wifi signal from the wifi card

Laptop now acceptable - still with 2,4 GHZ wifi but using "Bridged" method with an old EDIMAX wifi 4 port router. Around 70 Mib/s (still a lot slower by about 10X - I'm getting nearly 1Gb/s download in main house on 5 GHZ wifi --ISL has excellent Internet !!!... Read more

Simplest and easiest solution is the get a "real" wireless router & connect your laptop & phone accordingly.

Need a few questions answered before we can really help you further because there are too many vague things in your initial question...

Who is the ISP?
Did the ISP provide you with a cable modem or DSL modem? Does it have built in WIFI?
How did you setup the wifi from the virtual router software? WEP, WPA, etc?
Is the laptop connected to cable/dsl via wire or is it wireless? if it's wireless then for God's sake just use that wifi for your phone as well!
Is the laptop a PC or Mac? What version of Windows or Mac OS X are you running?

Post back, Hope this helps!!

If someone has wifi pass and access directly to network they can only access the wifi transmission part and if I don't send any traffic via wifi and if I disable the router page from wifi connection so they cant make changes, then my PC itself and its traffic is safe, while I'm on wire?

Say my router itself or other devices connected to it or wifi or anything related to the router is compromised, or someone knew default router page PW, the router was reconfig, ath.

Thanks!!

Unless you enable Wireless Isolation in the router wireless and wired clients are on the same network and have access to whatever is on either network. Wireless isolation is generally only an option for guest wireless networks. Disabling the router configuration page doesn't prevent access to the wired network.

If you don't trust people, don't let them onto your network, nothing beats that for protection. Aside from that don't give out your wireless password, change the default router configuration password, disabled remote administration, change the wireless encryption type to WPA2-AES and change the wireless password to something not easily guessable. If your router supports a guest network use that for everyone who doesn't live there.

Then the WNR1000 v2 Answer

Hello everyone,

I recently updated my router after about 10 years to a netgear nighthawk I am 99.9% sure that i hooked everything up right but when I go to log into my new WiFi i still see my old WiFi pop up and it still works. Is it normal to still see your old WiFi and have it still work after upgrading your WiFi router?

Thank you!

Hello everyone.. Need some help

Actually I want to share files directly with my PC using app such as Shareit and also want to use my android phone as a gamepad.
The problem is I'm using a desktop which has no Bluetooth or WiFi built-in.

I have this WiFi router though. It is connected to modem / internet.

Is there any way I can connect my router to my PC and use it to send and receive files and play games and if possible also stream videos?? Is it possible to do all this without an Internet connection??

I downloaded an app from playstore to use my phone as a gamepad bit it requires a WiFi or a Bluetooth connection with the PC..

Thanks in advance

Many PCs include an integrated ethernet adapter, allowing you to connect to your router via ethernet cable. If yours lacks working ethernet you could buy a USB ethernet or wireless adapter to connect to the router.

can malwares or viruses come from a wifi router in a public; a coffee shop, a public library, a restaurant, or school?

A:malwares from a wifi router?

In public wireless places, malware comes from the other computers that are on the network, not the router. Always make sure your firewall is set to public, so it will stealth its ports to all other computers on the public wifi network. That way, other computers will not be able to see your computer while connected to the network. Other than that, it is no different from being at home.........There is always a risk of a malware infection any time you are on the web. Always use antivirus software, keep it up to date and do periodic scans with Malwarebytes and HitMan Pro (both are free).

I opened the router and followed the instructions for set up. Once plugges in , it popped up as an option in my network however when I went to set it up and start to use it , there was a connection problem from the website. It suggested that I unplug and reset the router and so I did. Once i did that, the connection no longer appeared at all. I am now having trouble with the router connecting period. Please help , as I really need to be able to access wifi in my house

A:Connecting wifi router to Mac

How is it connected to the internet - do you have a separate modem or is this router also a combination modem/router
who is your ISP and did they supply the router

Do you only have a Mac available ?
