Q: Question: Resource for technical terminology explanations

I just wanted to know if anyone knows a website, or book that I could learn all of the "Computer Lingo" like what is FSB, or a multiplier of 13 = clockspeed. I know somewhat about computers, but in depth I really don't know anything. I love to come to this forum for advice, but I hate not knowing anything at all. I'd rather read up on this stuff instead of constantly asking for help this is to help me so I won't be completley lost; Trying to overclock my computer, or making my computer run very smoothly. Please help.

Preferred Solution: Question: Resource for technical terminology explanations

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an Acer 5100, using Windows XP.

There are many references to Hibernation and Standby modes in the manual and help screens, but nowhere is there a definition of either.

For an Acer, what is Standby and what is Hibernation? I know how to set either one, I just don't know what the results are...?

I'll skip the long story and cut to my question. My BIOS now shows my boot order as
1. RAID dsk02 (couple of letters like et,tc?) then "DVD"
2. RAID dsk00 568mb...ect ect (obviously the HDD)
3. USB disabled (another story for another day)

I assume # 2 is the optical drive? I've never seen "RAID dsk02 DVD" in a BIOS before representing the optical drive. Any feedback to edjucate me would be great

A:Bootup order/terminology question

The make and model of your system (or motherboard if it's custom built) would help.

I suspect that the motherboard is using the RAID controller to access the drives - so everything will say "RAID" even if a true RAID array doesn't exist (we're seeing this in some systems from major manufacturers at work).

It appears that item 1 is your DVD drive - but to be sure we'd need to see the exact string that appears there. The same thing goes for item 2 (but that is most likely the hard drive).

The true test here is to put a bootable CD/DVD in the drive and see if the system automatically boots from it. That will confirm that item 1 is the boot drive.

If, after removing the CD/DVD from the drive, the system boots to the hard drive - then that confirms that.

I've been reading previous posts regarding long distance router equipment. I am now more confused than ever. My office has a cable modem (Motorola SB6180-brand new)(?Access Point?). Currently an OLD Linksys Wireless-B, 2.4GHz-802.11b-Broadband router. My office Mac is ethernet wired, my laptop is wireless, both printers ethernet wired to the router. I want to broadcast a wireless signal to the house, 150' away, through two stucco (concrete) walls and a bank of trees. Recently I purchased a Netgear N300-WNR2000 Router, It didn't not reach the house well. A friend brought over a Netgear N600-WNDR3700 router, that barely worked, but not enough to really work. There is no line of sight that is UNobstructed. I want to be able to use a computer and a smartphone from the house. I am shopping for a replacement Router. From all I've read, I need either (a) a powerful router (b) possibly a Cantenna to focus the signal a longer distance (c) ? another antenna in the house to pick up the signal? (d) Booster? I understand that only takes an existing signal and boosts it further no matter how weak it is-and can't go out in the rain. (e) ? Two routers?? Doesn't make sense.
I thought I could find a router that is strong enough to just send the signal. What do I need on the computer at the house to pick up that signal, other than what is in the wifi-ready computer (like a Macbook).
Thank you Tech support guy (and gals). I'm really confused. L.

Can I change my Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5914 built with a AMD Sempron™ 3600+ CPU to a AMD Athlon 64/X2 CPU. Toshiba Tech support tells me that the processor is soldered and built into the motherboard but it is not. Both processors are socket AM2

A:Technical Question

The only hardware upgrade that you can usually make to a laptop is to add more RAM - if it supports adding more.

From what I've read so far, that model laptop comes with the AMD Sempron 3600+ 2.00 GHz processor and supports up to 4 GB of DDR2 PC2-6400(DDR2-800) RAM.

I have a client who needs BOTH some PHP and some SSI code in a webpage. The filetype needs to remain as SHTML. I tried making an SHTML page that included PHP, but what happens when I modify the .htaccess file is that one or the other gets done, but not both.

For example, I used this in the .htaccess:

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .shtml
AddType text/x-server-parsed-html .shtml
DirectoryIndex index.shtml index.php index.html

That does the PHP coding just fine in the shtml file, but not the
<!--#exec cgi="/cgi-bin/Tracking/ax.cgi" --> SSI code
line in the shtml page.

When I switch the first two lines, it does the SSI, but not the PHP.

How can I get it to do both the SSI *and* the PHP?

A while back, I asked a DSL provider about the distance betwween my house and the nearest DSL central office, which is about 6 miles away. Here's the partial response I got:

If the form says you qualify then you should be no more than 18,000 feet from the central office in your area. However, that is 18,000 feet in actual line length, not in walking or driving distance from the CO.Click to expand...

Question #1: How many miles is 18,000 feet? I'm sure it's less than 6 miles.
Question #2: Why are the DSL cables so short?

Today, I ordered it anyway from my phone company, and a technician is coming later this week to install it for me.

After it's all hooked up, if it doesn't connect, I'll have to cancel the whole shebang.

I really hope it works cuz I'm getting fed up with this dialup connection on these very crappy voice-grade phone lines.

I bought a new Compaq Presario laptop, and the specs say it has 256mb of PC2100, (266MHZ) DDR-SDRAM, with a max capacity of 1G. So I went out and bought 1G (2-512mb modules, same specs). When I opened up the memory compartment and removed the memory the laptop came with, it was marked 256mb, DDR, 333 mhz, PC 2700.

My questions:

Are the two types of memory interchangeable?
Can using PC 2700 333 mhz harm the computer if it is meant to run PC2100, 266 mhz?
If I use the PC2100, 266mhz, will my computer run slower?
What should I do?

I am using a program (which I didn't write) which creates a database driven website. It was working well, but suddenly, when I try to add new records, I get errors. I have the system on a WIN2000 server, and also mirrored on my WIN98 system at home.

On the WIN2000 server, I get this error message: "ERROR: Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done."

On the WIN98 system, I get this error: "Errors Occurred"

In both cases, the record does get added, but it cannot be edited - only deleted.

Since I couldn't reach the guy who wrote the program I was using, I did some research, and found this page over at Microsoft:

It described this error exactly. It said I needed to upgrade my MDAC and JET versions to make these errors go away. I don't really know what MDAC and JET are, but I found them for download on Microsoft's site.

Using my WIN98 system as the guinea pig, I downloaded and installed MDAC 2.6 and JET 4.0 - the most recent versions of both. Needless to say, it didn't fix the problem.

The only thing that changed on my WIN98 system is that instead of getting the "Errors Occurred" message, I now get the much longer error message that my server returns.

I haven't tried upgrading the server because - well - I'm afraid to touch the server, especially when the fix didn't work on... Read more

When I go to my BIOS, I see two hard drives: P0 and P2.
Let's call them as Disk1 and Disk2.

Regularly, I am booting from Disk2.
(By the way, one of the disks is dedicated to operating systems, and the other is dedicated to libraries. I don't know which one is which, since they are identical drives, but as I said regularly I am booting from Disk2).

When I have a boot problem such as "Insert correct media device", I am putting the system repair disc, and (after booting the system repair disc from cd/dvd drive) it gives me the error that "this repair disc is not compatible with your version".
But, when I change the first drive from Disk2 to Disk1 in BIOS, it doesn't give that error and shows me the system repair options.

What does this mean?
Why it is happening like that?
Does it mean that if I remove Disk1 physically or disable it, I can never use any system repair disc?
How can I solve this problem?
What are my options if a system repair disc gives me the "not compatible" error?

A:Technical Boot Question (2 Disks)

It sounds like your boot files are on disk 1, P0, and your OS is on disk 2, P2. You need to have a look in disk management to see whats what. If that is true, you won't be able to boot up to your OS if you remove disk 1.

Called PC-cillin cust. spt. a very nice Hindu lady finally helped me disable the 'Personal Firewall' component of the new software after we reinstalled it. Greetings, helpful and wonderful people.

I currently have a 2x2gb setup in 2 of my 4 DIMM slots on my motherboard. The timing is 8-8-8-24. The speed is DDR3 @ 1600MHz, and it is a matched pair. They run at 1.65V,

I am looking to expand this memory, but the pair I have picked out to add to the second bank (the remaining two DIMM slots) has differences in the size, voltage and timing. I have tried my best to research this problem before creating a thread but haven't found an answer detailed enough to explain why this would or would not work. Anyways, here are the details on the second pair.

2x4gb, same brand (Crucial). Timing 10-10-10-28. Speed DDR3 @ 1600MHz, matched pair. Running at 1.5V.

The three differences are the size (4gb vs 2gb per module), the timing (CAS latency 10 vs CAS latency 8), and the voltage (1.5V vs 1.65V).

The motherboard can handle all the specs of the possible new pair. Crucial's website confirms compatibility by suggesting this pair with its scan utility.

HOWEVER, my question is: What will happen in my BIOS configuration when I put this new pair in the second bank?
1. What will Dual-Channel, what will not, and why?
2. Will I have to manually reduce the latency of the second pair, or will I have to manually increase the latency of the first pair, in order to make them match? Will this result in a major speed decrease?
3. Will the difference in voltage be modified automatically? To which? (1.65v or 1.5v?)
4. Is it actually worth it to kee... Read more

It says "No Data"
The card is official. I've tried other slots. Other mem cards work, tried turning it off and on, etc. We have a hunch that the problem could be that the contacts on the memory card have been misalligned, however there is no damage we can see without taking it apart.
Is it possible to take it apart or are there rivets or anything in the back end of the memory card that would hold it together?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there,

I have a question about the "amvo virus" and Combofix...

My goal is to REMOVE this virus and then PREVENT my PC from being infected another time by the same virus...Does ComboFix just remove "amvo" or fixes the problem, protecting my PC "forever" against this virusc ???

If it doesn't, can anyone tell me a good practice for preventing this infection in future? (possibly, something more sophisticated than just disabling the execution of the autorun.ini in every external drive...)

amvo.exe) is a backdoor Trojan that is installed with other malicious files. Backdoor Trojans, IRCBots and Infostealers are very dangerous because they provide a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which they send back to the hacker. I understand USB flash drives are composed of two components, the memory part that retains the data and the controller that regulates the writing and retrieval of the data. I alo understand there are different types of the controller components.

Also, I've learned that some machines will see just about any USB flash drive; but, I occasionally see some machines that will recognize one of my flash drives and not the other. I suspect this is because of the different controllers in each of the USB flash drives.

Here's the question: Is there a way to determine which USB flash drives contain which controller components?

The reason I'm asking is that I have two USB flash drives, a 16-Gig and a 32-Gig. The 16- is getting too small and I'm going to retire it in favor of a new 32- or 64-Gig and I don't want to end up with two that have the same controller component and then run into a machine that will see neither.

Yesterday morning I restarted my Dell Inspiron 6400 to finish installing an update to my virus protection software (McAfee Plus), and as the computer was shutting down my external HD became disconnected from the laptop. Since then, however, my computer has failed to start. It gets to the very first screen, with the manufacturer's logo and progress bar, then moves to an error page.

On that page, "Windows Boot Manager" informs me that failed to start. "A recent hardware or software change might be the cause." To fix the problem, they recommend I insert my Windows installation disc, follow the repair process, etc.

I do not have this DVD, as it never shipped with my laptop. They recommend, as an alternative, to contact my computer manufacturer. I've done so, and checked through Dell's support site. Their FAQs told me to contact their support department. However, my warranty has also ended. Simply to contact them to find out what my recourse is will cost $49. I'd prefer not to do that unless I know they'll send me some sort of repair DVD.

So, a few questions, more to your experiences than to the software itself:

1. Is it likely that Dell will provide a Windows Vista DVD to a computer past warranty? I doubt it sincerely, but perhaps there's a chance.

2.If that doesn't work, I presume I'll have to buy Vista. Being as I had Home Basic before, would I be able to purchase and use an upgrade disc, or would I have t... Read more

(Believe it or not) I've never really used the cd writer much. I want to transfer data files to and from my new laptop. The desktop has XP and Nero, but it also seems to have some inbuilt copy function, because you can just copy and paste, then write to the cd (which is what I did). The laptop has Win2K and "Sonic" something-or-other. I wanted to copy some files from the laptop onto a cd-RW which had some files on it which had been copied from the desktop but it said the disk was "read-only". I am pretty sure that I've added files from the desktop to a disk with files already on it. So, the question is - can cds be used just like floppies (which is what I want) and, if so, how? What did I do to make that disk "read-only", or was it just because it was different copying software, or what? [I have NO IDEA what's going on, so I don't even know the right questions to ask ]. Any basic explanation would be appreciated.

A:Cd Copying Explanations, Please?

A CD is like a floppy as you can store information on them and use it to transfer information from one computer to another. But the method of storage is completely different. A floppy is erasable and can be reused, a CD once it is burned is not reusable...unless it is a rewritable CD. A floppy can be edited, a rewritable CD will have to be erased in order to reuse it.

The basic difference is that a floppy can be edited, once a CD is burned the information can't be changed.

- Input of a http://www.whatever address into the address bar, would bring up a bing page. No, I did not input it into the search bar. This no longer happens, but I don't know why it ever did.

I'm new to this forum and I'm glad that you are here. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition.

My problems actually stem back to around January. I tried to run an install program for the FTP program Flash FXP. It would not work at all. I would click on the .exe file and nothing would happen. I tried the file on my laptop and it worked fine. I figured I had a virus of some type so I upgraded to AVG and ran a scan. It found some tracking cookies and some virus' and I got rid of them. However, still Flash FXP would not install. A few days later suddenly my Windows Commander stopped working. When I tried to run it the screen blanks all except the the wall paper and then comes back after a few seconds. The only way I could run Windows Commander was to use the "Run As.." function with the protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity. However, I can't play music or use Word when I do that. So I tried to uninstall Windows Commander and it wouldn't allow me to do that, the same thing from above would happen. I used regcleaner to uninstall Windows Commander and tried to reinstall it. However, even when I tried to install it the same thing happened...screen would blank and comeback after a few seconds. So I stopped using Windows Commander. I also noticed that REGEDIT did the EXACT same thing.

A few weeks later my AVG would not allow me to update, I did everything the AVG help said to do and nothing worked. I... Read more

It seems like it's impossible any more to find out what something does. All anybody reports is whether or not they consider it 'safe'. Safe doesn't mean it's something I want running on my PC-although unsafe does mean that I definitely want to remove or restrict it. I'm just about at the point where I'll take the approach that if the author isn't willing to describe, in plain language, what their thingie does, then it's because they're hiding something-not necessarily malicious, but undoubtedly something 'not good' for the user.

I know the logical fallacy in this-it's related to the security question "If you don't have anything to hide then why do you object to surveillance?" But I see this as going in the opposite direction. That is, if they want to install it on my PC then I think they should tell me what it does.

HP is particularly bad about this. (Try & find out what 'hpqwmiex' does? Nobody seems to know-but it runs on all HP's. The best any site I've found says is that it's a process from HP. Duh.) But they're not the only ones.

What triggered this today was trying to find out what the Armhelper ActiveX control from Spintop does. Again, several sites say it's safe-but nobody seems to know what it does and Spintop isn't talking. So, does anybody know? Again, if all you know is that it's safe then don't bother replying-I'm trying to ... Read more

there are the two threats that seem to have somewhat of a resemblance, any help that you guys could perhaps provide me would be appreciated, normally i wouldn't mind but its in my graphics o.o?

both are variants of "java/exploit.agent.af.trojan"

A:virus found in ATI folder okay now but explanations if possible?

You could have an older version of Java in your system that's still vulnerable to exploits. Try running this tool (JavaRa), which will clean out the old versions & make sure you have the latest version of Java.

If you want to be on the safe side, uninstall all of Java & then reinstall it.

I need to upgrade my current system to include:

2 new IDE hdds
1 DVD-RAM drive

I believe I need to purchase a new PCI IDE controller to allow me to add the above components. But, I do not know what exactly to ask for when I eventually hit up the nearby computer shop.

I also beleive I need a new power supply to accomodate the extra components i want to install. Currently my power suppy is a 320W one, and i'm positive there are no other extra outlets for me to use
My current system is as described below in my signature, with the following components left out:

1 - 40 GIG maxtor drive
1 - IOMEGA ZIP drive internal
1 - CD-ROM
1 - CD-RW

the above are all connected to the primary and secondary connectors, master and slave, so i know I have no room for any additions

I want to maintain my current setup (that means, I do not want to sub a CD-RW for the CD-ROM, etc..)
what should I buy first?? what sort of brands are good??

This morning Windows Update informed me of an update for the nVidia GeForce Go 6150 Display. However, when I tried to get more information on it, I was sent to
Winqual Help

Unfortunately, to get to any link inside Winqual Help one need a digital certificate, which is available for $49.

It seems an inappropriate for MS to place explanations in an area that cannot be accessed by all valid owners of a Windows OS. Such explanations should be moved back to the traditional http://support.microsoft.com/kb/xxxxxx pages where they can be accessed by all.

Hi, so i installed ASUS AI-suite3 because i like the control it gives you. The utility also overclocks your CPU (in a "safe range" for all pc's..
(running the i7 6700K on an asus Z170 Pro gaming mobo)
I got "impressive" results. 4.8Ghz at 1.356V, drawing "87watts" with a max temp of "61 degrees c"..
Curious to say the least.... The program mentions that syntetic benchmarks like Aida 64 etc will produce way higher temps, but ai-suite overclocks the cpu to real life scenarios like gaming etc... So thats why it has low temps and high frequencies, but im not convinced...

I am running an air cooler for heavens sake! A noctua NH-u14s!
My cpu (at stock), hit max ~60c on syntetic benchmarks with almost no chassi fan airflow (like my pc silent). This looked way too good to be true... Can my temp probe be faulty or something?

A:Ridiculous 6700k overclocking results.Would like some explanations...

Hm.. Ok this looks more realistic. I manually set the cpu from 4.8ghz to 4.6ghz, and forced the voltage down to offset "0". Now the cpu peaks at 1.4v, not a worrying 1.5v... Running Aida64 for a while i see that the cpu sits around 65-70c and peaks to a maximum of 83c. (neither speedfan nor AiSuite sees these peaks, only aida64 does... All other programs tells me the cpu is running at 65c.. Now my pc is bearly auidble at this unrealistic 100% load. Cpu fan is att 800rpm... What are normal stats for a 6700K?

Two terminology questions
1)What is the name of the device many people have in their home that allows them to connect multiple machines to the internet wirelessly?
2)Just because multiple machines share the same network connection (I.e. same internet connection) does that mean they are in a network? For example if my laptop and desktop connect to the same [insert word from question 1 here] it doesn't really seem like they are on a "network".

A:Terminology regarding network devices

A network is connecting two or more devices together for communications between them. Whether its a simple cable connecting two machines or a switch connecting five machines, its still considered networking.

Switches are multiple network ports that will share a network connection between several computers at one time by switching between the ports. A switch does not consist of a Wide Area Network (WAN) port used for connecting to Internet Service Provider (ISP). There are Wireless Access Points bundled within some Switches.

Wireless Access Points (WAP) are specifically what the name implies, they do not include switch or router functions.

Routers are needed for ISP connections through the use of a WAN port. A Switch and WAP has independent functions which can be found bundled within a Router.

You have an option of purchasing all three network components bundled together within one package of you can purchase them all separate as individual network components.
