Upgrading an IBM Thinkpad

Q: Upgrading an IBM Thinkpad

Hey, I was wonderin about upgradin. I have a Pentium III (700Mhz) 128MB of ram and 10 gigs of memory. I really was stupid when I bought it, and I am lookin to upgrade the prossessor to a Pentium IV. Is this even possible? I dont have a clone, but I have been told that you are able to upgrade processors, I wasnt sure if it was possible with a laptop. Anyone ever tried this?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Upgrading an IBM Thinkpad

No, you can't upgrade to a Penitum 4 without buying an entirely new laptop. You may be able to put a slightly faster PIII CPU in it, up to a PIII 1.4Ghz. You'd have to find a Mobile Pentium III, which aren't stocked by most places so you'd have to order it online most likely - now thats assuming the laptop supports a faster CPU which it might not - you'll have to check with IBM or do an online search for your specific model number. Its also not the easiest thing to take apart a laptop. A memory upgrade would be a much cheaper, easier, and possible upgrade - you could take the memory to 256MB or more easily. You can check on www.crucial.com to see how much it'll take ot on IBM's website.

Hi Guys, I have a two really old school computers which I just love the design of and especially the IBM logo (for the T60)As opposed to buying a new laptop (which may be cheaper) I would like to upgrad the CPU of my current laptops instead so that I can rock the old school laptops for longer.  I was wanting to know, what do I look for in terms of relevant code names for a CPU that would fit in the two laptops and how do I find this informations? I would like to upgrade the two Laptops to the highest spec CPU available for them. Also, I am aware of the bios needing to be update? I'm not actually familiar with this but I understand that it would need to be done; I would also need some guidance with this too.  Please help me if you can. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Unless this unit has sentimental value attached to it, this is not a worthwhile effort. I saw one just now on sale on the Web for $270.

If you upgraded the Memory and HD you would still have a highly mediocre PC, and may wind up spend another $270???

Much better Laptops are on sale everyweek for $500. and come with XP Home. I'd recommend that you consider that course.

My w510 has a TOSHIBA MK3261GSYN 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz, and 7904 mb ram most of it unused. I am using puppy linux for my operating system and I have tried lubuntu as well, both are very fast but when I browse youtube videos my computer slows down greatly. I want to upgrade the hardware to try to solve this. I found the Kingston 2.5" 120gb SATA III SSD and I want to install it to replace my hdd. Will this be enough to help my computer speed? I don't know what CPU I should upgrade it with or whats compatible with my computer but I will appreciate any reccomendations. I have never touched my computers hardware before, and the installation videos I've seen for upgrades of it on youtube just show removing the screws and parts, then installing the part, but I've also read that you need firmware and BIOS updates. Would I need to update my firmware before I install any of these parts? I will appreciate any advice.

I recently bought a Thinkpad T450s with the default TN 1600x900 screen. The screen was not bright enough to use it outside, so I decided to buy a replacement IPS 1920x1080 screen on Ebay and install it myself. I ordered this screen, which was supposed to be an LG LP140WF3SPD1 with the max brightness of 300 nits, but the seller sent an Innolux N140HCE-EAA, which only has a max brightness of 250 nits. Needless to say I am disgusted with the deceptive advertising of the seller "laptop_screen" so I want to alert anyone else who is shopping for a replacement screen to avoid this seller on Ebay. Apart from that, I want to let everyone know that the Innolux N140HCE-EAA screen will work in the T450s and the viewing angles are good. I don't have enough experience to be able to say whether the color quality is good or not, but I can tell that the screen isn't very bright. In Windows, the N140HCE-EAA does not allow me to change the brightness of the screen, because the data in the screen's EDID does not match what the laptop expects.  I have read online that this problem also occurs when installing the LG LP140WF3SPD1 in a T450s that originally had a TN 1600x900 screen, so this isn't a problem with the N140HCE-EAA part. In Linux I can adjust the screen brightness since Linux ignores the EDID data when setting the brightness. Since I use Linux, I have no problems, but this is a problem for Windows users. I have not tried to overwrite the EDID data, so I don't know whether the ED... Read more

A:Need Advice on Upgrading RAM on Thinkpad T470

Hi Loungepuppy,Warm Greetings & welcome to Lenovo Community, happy to have you here.

It depends upon your requirement ideally you will need a same kind (like frequency, type, size) of RAM in both slots to achieve a dual channel configuration.
Therefore, you can either install an 8GB stick to the existing configuration or go ahead with even 16GB stick aswell.

Edit- This system does support 32GB max 2400MHz DDR4 (source)

I hope the above information helped you.
Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

A:Need some help upgrading my Lenovo Thinkpad Z61m 9...

Welcome to the forum!

You cannot upgrade the video card since it's soldered to the motherboard, and yours had the better graphic chip available for this series. See the original specs below:

ThinkPad Z61m - 9450-3HG
T2500(2GHz), 1GB RAM, 100GB 5400rpm HD, 15.4in 1680x1050 LCD, 128MB ATI Radeon X1400, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ether, UltraNav, Sec Chip, IEEE 1394, FPR, Camera, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro
The RAM is not the same as the desktop pcs, yours uses SODIMM DDR2-RAM (200 pins) and the maximum supported RAM by the chipset is 3GB.

Hi all. New to the forum but have a quick question on the thinkpad t470s. I am looking to upgrade the ram from the 8 gig currently in it and replce the 4 gig module with a 16 gig one to max it out. Can anyone give me pointers on which module i should be buying for the 16 gig module. I was hoping to find locally at best buy but unfortunately they do not have 16 gig modules. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

A:Need Advice on Upgrading RAM on Thinkpad T470

Hello and welcome,

I've moved your post to the T-series forum.

Your subject says T470 but the message body says - and implies - T470s.  I think you already know that one module is soldered and one socketed, but just checking...

Both base specs say "2400MHz DDR4".  I'd be inclined to go to a reputable vendor's site (Crucial for instance - not pushing them...)  and use their memory finder for specifics.  In the hopefully unlikely event of compatibility issues you'd have that to fall back on for a return.

Probably not necessary, but it's not a bad idea to pull the specs of the soldered module and try to match those exactly.

Z.

Hello forum! I bought Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon X1 2017 (black) laptop with the FHD screen a few months ago and now I want to upgrade to the WQHD screen. Is this still possible? I have a T410 with Windows 7 Professional which Microsoft invited to upgrade to Win 10. In "preparing" the computer for Win 10 a message indicated that some functions would not work. I did not realize that in taking the next step (whateve that was at the time) it would gto ahead with the upgrade. I found that the offer to choose "when" to upgrade was a choice of three different pre-assigned days. I had to turn off the computer to stop the upgrade, there was no other way (I tried Task Manager, Process Explorer, Alt F4, etc.). Now it is just reserved and waiting. My concerns are:      -will an upgrade result in a Windows 10 "Professional"? or will distinctions between "Home" and "Profesional" be lost?     -the preparation process indicated that Intel PROSet/ Wireless would have to be re-installed. As best as I can understand from the Intel site the wireless adaptor | Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200 AGN | in the T410 is not supported in Win 10. The Intel site said to go to the manufacturer. Will Lenovo have an update for this?     -Intel PROSet/Wireless may not be critical to me but a wireless driver will be. Will the T410 wireless function still function? Has anyone had experience with the T410 moving to Win 10? Thanks.

Hi and welcome, ssumOfficially, upgrade to the win10 on the T410 isn't supported:https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht103535- win10 reduction matches the source OS.- definitely, Lenovo will not update the win10 drivers for the Intel 6200 itself, it's a deal of the Intel. I have an older s230u Thinkpad Twist that I barely use anymore because it has become abysmally slow.  I just want something lightweight to take to work with me other than my 17.3 inch Alienware beast that always gets wicked stares, and weighs over 20lbs in the backpack with the PSU.   A couple years ago I freshly installed Windows 10 removing all previous partitions, installations etc.  In the past I have always been **bleep** about imaging new PCs with Acronis, but some reason I cannot find the original image on my dozens of external HDDs I have laying around.   I have multiple questions regarding this: FIrst, the 24gb inlcluded ssd - Since I did a bare windows installation on the main drive, with no original drivers/bloatware left in the laptop, is this drive even functioning anymore? I have a Thinkpad Z60m 2529 rcu and I am thinking about upgrading it. Initially, I was thinking about building me a completely new custom desktop system but... my laptop still works ok except for a few issues. (1. sound is weird 2. internal cooling stuff and external cooling pad is messed up) But besides that, it is ok.

So, I am thinking about upgrading the memory to make it super duper extremely fast. As far as I know from another thread, I can only put so much memory on a specific computer. And it has to be the right kind of memory as well. So, my questions are:

1. What kind of memory do I buy for my laptop?
2. How much memory can my laptop take?
3. Is this a good idea to speed up my computer?
4. Should I just forget about this and just build a new god-awful fast custom desktop instead? (I bought this laptop in 2006 I believe...)
5. Your recommendations for the memory I should buy if you recommend me buying the memory? (include links please, I will probably use Amazon since their customer service is the best)

Thank you!

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 when installing a new Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB and now my internal SD card reader which I think is a Ricoh will not work when I insert a SD above 4GB, it works for smaller cards.  I have tried installing the drivers from the Lenovo KB and my Windows Troubleshooter says all drivers for that device are up to date.  One thing that I have noticed is that when I insert the card the Ricoh device pops up, but also responds with an uninstalled PCI Serial Port.  I do not know what device this is, but it doesn't show up unless an SDHC card is inserted and remains after I take it out, but when I do a restart it has disappeared and it is not there if I insert a 4gb SD card first.  Another thing I have noticed is that the card does pop up in the Disk Management utility, but it is unreadable.  I have checked the card on cameras and a friend's computer and know that it works and is not corrupted.  See pics below and the PCI serial port ID # and you can see my frustration... hopefully someone can help fix this issue, I need to read SDHCs for work all the time and would prefer not to have to buy a peripheral device to do the job...

Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2½" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2½" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

I bought a used IBM Thinkpad T20 Thinkpad Type 2647-92U from eBay for use this semester on campus. It is in great shape and has a recent edition of Windows XP but an older version of MS Office which does not boot properly.

This computer was a part of a network and keeps trying to connect to it each time Windows loads. It came with a LinkSys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter 2.4 GHz 802.11g card.

The CD is an official copy; clean and has no scratches or nicks. The DVD/CD-ROM will boot other CD's such as music CD's and DVD films and data discs with MS Word files etc on them.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hello, I am looking for a laptop which can be securely attached/locked (so that I can let it during the night in the office). Could you please tell me if the following laptops have a security slot (Kensington or similar) to attach it somewhere?THINKPAD X1 CARBON (5TH GEN)THINKPAD X1 YOGA (2ND GEN) I do not find it described in the specifications, but from the available pictures, it seems that they have some kind of security slot. Thanks!

I contacted Lenovol support and they send me a replacement unit. The the replacement unit has the same problem. Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 docking station does not charge Thinkpad P51 battery.  I need to plug in the power adapter for both docking station and notebook.  Does anybody have similiar problem?

A:Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 docking station does not charge Thinkpad P51 battery.

Everbody's p51 would be the same.  The thunderbolt port won't work as a charging port.  The thunderbolt specs specify 100w max.  That's not enough.  Your thunderbolt port is not for charging.  To charge via the dock, you need a workstation dock, not a thunderbolt dock.  A thinderbolt dock can charge things like an x1 carbon (5th gen) or x1 yoga (2nd gen)

Does the Thinkpad P51s support the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? I have the Thinkpad P51s with stock Windows 10 Pro and updated to latest drivers and Windows version and installed the latest Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock drivers. Attaching the Thunderbolt 3 Dock to the P51s as described in documentation, it charges the notebook, however, noting attached to the dock is recognized. I've tested with attaching USB flash drives, headphones, Ethernet, HDMI, and DP, but nothing is recognized nor are any warnings/errors displayed in Windows. While the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is listed as being compatible with the P51s and T570, the notebook order page does not list the Thunderbolt 3 Dock in any of the accessories lists. Lenovo Sales also confirmed that the Thunderbolt 3 Dock is fully compatible with the P51s.  However, I needed to purchase the Thunderbolt 3 Dock separately from the notebook order. What's going on? Has anybody successfully used the P51s or the T570 with the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Or is this something I need to wait for full support via a future BIOS/driver update? Or perhaps my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is defective? Thanks,Boris

T430 fails to read hard drive or hangs up on startup when the battery is installed.  Typically will start on AC without the battery installed, but still hangs up intermittently  Was working fine until after multiple rapid power outages during a storm. Any ideas? OS is Windows 10 Thanks in advance!

A:ThinkPad hangs on boot - stuck at Thinkpad screen

You might have damaged the power circuitry on the motherboard.  If that is the case, the only solution is to replace the board.  There is an array of power transistors that handles the switching back and forth between AC and battery.

The Thinkpad sticker with the red light above the 'i' doesn't turn on unless the screen turns to tablet mode. Is there any way for the light to stay on all the times? The one near the keyboard does work, the issue is with the light on the outside lid.
