Mystery "Base System" devices on Acer laptop

Q: Mystery "Base System" devices on Acer laptop

We just pulled Vista off and put XP on an Acer Aspire 4220. Audio, video, LAN, Wireless, SD card slot, modem, touchpad, chipset (nVidia) and CPU (AMD) drivers have all been installed and work perfectly. However, Device Manager still shows three "Base System Device" entries with yellow question marks and I cannot figure out what they might be. Suggestions?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello,
First let me tell you about my system.   This is an Inspiron
E1705/9400 laptop with the T7400 Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.16
GHZ.   It has 2 GB of RAM and a brand new 500GB Hitachi Travelstar hard
drive (7200 RPM).   It also has the GeForce Go 7900 GS video card.
It previously had Windows XP Professional (32 bit) and worked fine.
But, I have three computers in my home and home office and would like
them all to work better together on my wired home network, so I am
upgrading all three to Windows 7.   My two desktops (one is Dimension
XPS 420 and the other is Dimension XPS 430) seem like they will be no
problem to upgrade to Windows 7.   But, this laptop was not listed on
Dell's Windows 7 Compatibility List.   However, the Windows 7 Upgrade
Advisor that I downloaded and ran seemed to say that it was OK to do a
clean install of 32 bit Windows 7 and it only had a few minor concerns,
where it said to check for updated drivers from the manufacturer.   The
laptop originally came with a 100GB hard drive.   For my use, that is
getting very small, so I decided to get the same exact 7200 RPM drive
in the 500 GB size.   This will allow me to do a clean install of the
32 bit Windows 7 OS on the new hard drive and not have to wipe the old
drive to do it.   I can just hold onto the old HD and stick it back in
whenever I might ... Read more

There are 2 devices in the "Device Manager" that do not have drivers installed.

I just did a clean install of Window 7 SP1 32-bit to a Dell Latitude E6500. I have uploaded all the Windows updates and all seems to be performing well. However, there are two devices in the "device manager" that do not have drivers installed, and I can't determine what the devices are nor how/where to find the drivers for them online or elsewhere. The driverless devices are "Base System Device" and "Broadcom USH". When I look at the properties page of both devices, it says that the Base System Devices location is "PCI bus 3, device 1, function 3", and the Boradcom USH's location as "0000.001a.0002.001.000.000.000.000.000".

The laptop did NOT come with a drivers installation disk.

QUESTION: How can I identify what these devices actually are and, more importantly, how can I obtain the driver for them?

A:Can't ID driverless devices "Base System Device" and "Broadcom USH"

Well, as for the second part of your question......... have you tried using windows own driver update utility? Right click on the yellow exclamation point in Device Manager, choose update.

I'm thinking your "boradcom ush" is this, drivers for it are here too, :Broadcom USH - USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800 - awdit - The driver, software, & hardware database

My HDD crashed and I didn't back up my drivers, I got all of them from the lenovo support site for my Lenovo Y570 and still remains "Base System Device" drivers. I've tried the Lenovo Update scan thing and searching google for people with similar problems, I came up with nothing.

So I ask here, what are these drivers? Where can I find them?

Pic below is device manager; in properties it states location as PCI Bus 10 (I have no idea what this means or if its relevant)

I can't notice anything wrong with my Laptop as it is now, everything works (I haven't tried gaming, except I can no longer scroll with my touchpad, the sides used to allow me to but now the whole area of the pad is touch to click)

Thanks for your help in advance would be a huge help if you could help me work this out.

After our Dell Inspiron E1505 recently crashed , Dell talked us thru diagnostics and finally sent us a replacement(refurbished) Toshiba hard drive to install in our computer. After installing it, and reloading all of the software for Windows XP, MS Office Small Business 2003, drivers and utilities, using the discs that came with the computer, we have a "Found New Hardware" window that pops up - Wizard trying to install a "Base System Device" everytime we turn the computer on. It asks for a disc but none of my existing ones seem to be the correct one. I've given it permission to connect to the Internet to "find" the software but nothing works.
Also, since the crash/re-install, our C drive only has 12.4 GBs of total disc space, and of that, only 1.2 is still free space. My D drive has about 37 GBs of disc space. Could these two problems be connected? The computer was running so slow and we would periodically get a message "low virtual memory". This weekend, I moved as many of our documents as possible to the D drive to try and free up space. It's a little better, but why do I have such a small amount of disc space? Help!

Recently my computer's driver would stop responding for a minute or 2 then resume back to normal. I get the error that my driver stopped responding. So I click on it to see why and troubleshoot it. But its unable to automatically fix it .
It says "The driver for Base System Device is not installed. Install the latest driver for the device" . I googled it and looked around this forum to see what I can do...I still dont know .
The PNP device ID is
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0592&SUBSYS_02711028&REV_12\4&32BCD1C&0&3B48.

Any helps or point me in the direction of where I can get help would be great! Thanks!

Hi,

I'm running XP home and have a strange "empty" system folder showing up in My Computer in the "other" category. It has no name, no contents, and cannot be deleted.

I had this identical thing happen before upgrading to XP when running 98 SE. It was a remnant of an old install of McAfee Safe & Sound, and the folks here were able to help me solve it with this advice:

http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?threadid=124006&highlight=mystery+folder

But now it's reappeared and I can't find it in the registry at the key that was suggested to me in the above link. Perhaps it's different as I'm now on XP.

I don't know why this has happened again, but would love to get rid of this ridiculous icon.

Thanks!!
Dr. Michael

Hi,

I have just upgraded a 4 year old Dell 1420 inspiron laptop from:

80 gb, Intel T5250 CPU, 2 gb ram, Win Vista basic to 500 gb, Intel T7300 CPU, 4 gb ram and W7 64-bit HP.

Everything works. Windows update knows where to get the driver. The only drivers not working are the Sigmatel sound card driver which luckily for me could be loaded from the vista CD. I have found this "Base System Device" under "Other devices" in the device manager and have no clue what it is. I googled online and someone said it was a card reader thing. I saw W7 update the SD card reader drivers under one of its downloads and I can see the "SD host adapters" in the device manager. The creative webcam driver was also updated by win vista.

A:What is this "Base System Device"?

Hello all,
I opened the Device Manager and i found there "Base System Devices" Checked with a question mark.

I tried to fix with Windows Update & Updating Drivers .
I dunno ..
Nothing helps .

What can I do ?

A:"Base System Device"

Hi Kathy. Did you just install W7 on that laptop (or did it come pre-loaded with W7)?

Quick guess answer:
I had the exact same issue on a laptop I installed W7 on and the 3 Base Devices were taken care of by installing the single device driver from HP downloads for the 6-in-1 Card Reader. Did you install yours yet?

Longer answer:
Right click on each of the devices and choose Properties.
Go to the Details Tab > from the drop down menu > Choose Hardware IDs.
You will see a list of codes like this: PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&SUBSYS_82C61043&REV_02
Write the top one down.

Now go here:
PCI Vendor and Device Lists
And enter the PCI/VEN_ code into the manufacturer box and "Search" and you will get the manufacturer name. (eg: 10EC)
Then enter the DEV_ code into the Device Search box and "Search" and you will get the type of device. (eg: 8168)
With this information you can determine what kind of driver and where to look for it.
If you need more help just post the info you find here.

My MOBO is ASUS P4P800 Deluxe.
I just recently flashed my BIOS to the latest BETA version from the German ASUS FTP site in order to correct my compatibility issues detecting my 300GB Maxtor SATA drive.

All was perfect until I tried to connect my mobile phone via USB and something went wrong and it wouldn't detect properly. The phone does, however, show up under USB devices as MOTOROLA USB MODEM, like it did in the past.

So I don't know what's the problem... and don't know how related this issue is, but then I saw that under 'System Devices' there is 'Plug-N-Play BIOS Extension' listed twice.

First one is fine, second one shows an exclamation mark and under properties it says that there is some corruption in the registry or something.

I don't like exclamation marks anywhere under Device Manager. I hope someone can tell me how to fix this...

Do I look for a driver? And if so, which one and where? Is this 'device' suppose to be listed twice? Maybe I should just try 'removing' it?

Not a major issue, of course, purely cosmetic, but still a minor annoyance none-the-less:

I have a number of card reader drives that I never use (haven't even removed that plastic cover tape from them to help keep the dust out) that show when viewing the "Computer" window that displays drives. Is there any way to hide specific unused drivers from this view? Not remove drive entirely, of course, I may need to use one in the future, but just to hide them so they aren't visible, until I may chose to make them visible again?

Thanks as always,

Russell

A:Hiding unused "removable storage" devices from "Computer" folder

Hello Russell,

You could check Hide empty drives in the Computer folder in Folder Options to have them stay hidden until you insert a card. When a card is inserted, the drive will display in Computer.

I looked in the "device manager" driver section and it has an exclamation mark next to the "Consumer IR Devices" in the "System Devices" section and It says: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"

Does anyone have any solutions, this is soooooo frustrating!!!

If yes follow instructions to find the problem
If no
Go in via safe mode find out the necessary information about the driver then go to the website to download to desktop. Then install.
Follow this tut to up date the driver
Device Manager - Install Driver
If it cannot be updated in this way, follow to step 7 and go to website and explained above.

If you unistall the driver, you can use automatic update.

I am not sure if that is your problem, however.
You may want to go in via, safe mode and set up a new account.

Hello everybody. Installing Win7 Home Premium x64 on a new 1TB from the offical DVD, and the computer hangs at "Setup is starting services" Only running with 2GB of ram in. My video card is a nvidia 9800 GT 1GB, and i've tried it with an older nvidia 8800, with the same issue. I don't have any USB devices hooked up besides my keyboard and mouse. I've tried reinstalling twice with the same issue. I've also tried using the "VGA 640 x 480" option in the F8 boot menu. Safe mode just says I need to complete setup first, and restarts.

Any suggestions?

A:Stuck at "Setup is loading System Devices"

Welcome to Seven Forums.

You have done some good trouble shooting already.

By 'offical DVD' do you mean MS DVD or MS ISO file burned to DVD?

Are you using the Clean install or Upgrade method?

What mother board are you using?
Try with one of the other RAM modules. Have you done a memtest?

Do you have on board graphics? Try installing with that if possible.
Try with VGA cable if possible.

Have you checked for updated BIOS version?

Any Over Clocking of the RAM, CPU or GPU?

You might try running Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, this might find any hardware, settings and device issues.

Hi all,
I have a rather perplexing problem with internet access from my laptop (Win 7 Home Premium, Avast Free). My property is a large building with thick, granite walls so I've added 3 hard-wired, wireless access points (2 recycled, old routers and a TP-Link WAP) in various locations back to the main router (BT Homehub 3), served by up-to 8Mbps BT broadband service (I typically get 6Mbps - no fibre-broadband available here!) Just to complicate things a little more, this is a holiday property with 4 other families staying, so bandwidth use is a little difficult to control.
Mostly, everyone has been fine: my Android phone, my Nexus tablet and my wife's iPad plus other visitors' various devices all connect via wifi from any of the access points. (Everyone had problems this morning but I think BT may have been doing something with the exchange overnight so I'm going to assume, for now, it's just my laptop that's having problems).
OK, the laptop will connect to any access point, including the main router, but generally states "No internet access" from there. I say "generally" because it has done on past visits to the property and sometimes connects briefly - usually if I reset, disconnect or unplug something. Also, I CAN connect the laptop via Ethernet from any point.
Can someone outline a process I can try to identify and fix the laptop please? If problems recur with other kit I may need help with my local network too.
Thanks,

Hi, I'm hoping I'm posting this at the right place, if not please move.
A week ago my girlfriends' laptop started giving an error message on boot saying "No bootable device, press any key".
I tried a number of suggestions I found posted online to similar issues but to no avail. I didn't want to completely reset the machine since it was still under warranty, so I figured if we just submitted it for repair someone might be able to save more of her files. However; girlfriend lost the warranty/receipt. We gave up searching today so I went back in to try and reset it.
I couldn't access the recovery partition of the hdd and gf didn't make a recovery disc.So I decided to try a reset using a recovery drive I made from my own Acer laptop (which, like hers, came with win8).
This seemed to work, so I let it do it's thing. I checked back on it a while later and it was on 7%, but when I checked again it was stuck on the "ACER" boot screen. It was stuck on there for a couple of hours, not responding to any key input. When I restarted it (by holding power button to turn it off first) it again got stuck on the Acer screen. If I'm quick enough I can get into BIOS during boot, but not once it's stuck on the acer screen.

Do you have any ideas what I can do/try to get this thing working again?

A:Acer laptop stuck on "ACER" screen.

Unless your laptop is the same model as you girlfriend's - or at least from the same laptop series - your recovery disk won't work, mainly because it will try to install the wrong drivers.

I think your best bet is to try to get it fixed under warranty. You may not need the receipt, you can check the laptop's warranty status here :- https://www.acer-apac.com/acer_web/

Everything was working fine through the first three discs. I was called away while the third disc was in use (maybe 10 minutes) and when I got back to the machine, the window was up asking me to remove disc 3 and insert disc 4. I did, and in the 4 hours and 15 minutes since then, nothing has happened. The Acer eRecovery Management (v8.3.2) Window is up. Step 5 "Restore Progres" is highlighted. The elapsed time counter is continuing to run (currently at 5 hours 8 minutes and counting), the "Restoring System" bar is full and shows 100%, and the "Updating System" bar is stuck at 2%, which is where it was when I put in the 4th disc. I am tempted to shut down the laptop and start all over again, but I am afraid that it will mess something up if I do...what should I do at this point?

Hello & Welcome to Tech Guy Forum.

I started to do a full system recovery on my son's Acer Aspire 5750z, Click to expand...

Why?

I am NOT, sadly an expert with the Acer recovery program.

I don't know if stopping & restarting will damage your computer.

Which service pack of W7 HP 64 bit?

Logically, what choices have you; wait for X # of hours, or shut it down?

If you shut it down, boot to the W7 Recovery Environment & try a repair. It might find the files necessary to believe that W7 is currently installed.

Run Diags from Acer, that are probably built into the computer.

Which Acer Aspire 5750z? There seem to be multiple offerings.

There's a user guide here.

Hi guys,

Got a bit of a problem here with my family's laptop. Now I'm not sure how the problem came around here (as I don't use it and have been using my own computer in my own room) but my brother tells me the laptop aint working

I have no clue what he or my sister has done on the laptop at all but the laptop just keeps reaching the Acer splash screen and re-booting constantly. Whenever I try to hit any key on the board during the boot up I get a short beep and no response.

In the occasional circumstance it does boot, it appears with "Error Loading operating System" on a black screen with white text, supposedly not being able to boot Windows. I've managed to get into BIOS before hand but nothing has changed, it's still remains in factory default settings as neither member of my family has been into BIOS before-hand

We've also had a audio problems in the past with it too as the audio drivers crash and stay on loop.

I have no clue what to do other than to send it off to Acer for repair (don't know if we are in warranty, we're paying for it weekly from Littlewoods UK). We don't have a installation disc on us at this moment as it came installed on the laptop to begin with.

I'm young, so bear with me, I don't know a lot of technical computer terms.
I'm on my moms laptop, which she let me bring with me to my dads house, and I downloaded Manycam last night to screen share with my friend. Today, something that I assume was a virus, in the form of a virus scanner, popped up, called Win 7. It kept telling me to buy their product because my computer was at risk. I showed my dad and he told me to download Malware, and I did and did a real virus scan. I had 26 virus (At least 6 trojan), which were all removed. I rebooted her computer and tried to open Firefox. It told me "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" The only reasonable one was IE so I chose that one. IE opened and started to load but it closed out, and it told me "Do you want to run or save this file?" I chose run, and then it told me "Do you want to run this software?" I chose Run. Then the whole process started over, and there was no end. The same thing happened when I tried to open IE. I tried to reboot the computer again, but no luck..

Any solutions? (I have until Tuesday to fix this)

A:"no bootable device. Hit any key." Error on my Acer M5 laptop upon start up.

Hmm...the "scratching or cracking" sounds could indicate a small piece of broken plastic in the fan that cools the processor or pushed a portion of the case where it is rubbing or perhaps stopping the fan. That could cause the computer to stop if it were to get too hot and the fan was unable to spin.

The error regarding no boot device normally indicates the harddrive has failed. Hopefully that's not the case. I'd strongly recommend taking it to someone that specializes in laptop repair to check it out. If the drive has failed, then likely any data you had on the drive would be gone, or would cost money to get it back. If the drive has some damage but is not completely dead, then files may be able to be recovered. Hopefully you've been backing up your data.

Hard drive loose would be my first suspect (and hope for an easy fix). You can't really tell by just looking, so did you disconnect the hard drive and any cables connected to it and then reconnect firmly?

I'd also check the memory chip(s) for possible looseness.

Hi, I have recently tried reinstalling Windows XP Media Centre Edition myself as the guy I hired to fix my computer installed XP Professional, which I didn't have a license for. All installed fine, just having trouble running the setup on some of the drivers I am installing, namely the wireless driver which I have found on the Acer website. Keep receiving a message that the "RPC server is unavailable" when I try to run the driver setup. Can anyone offer any ideas or tell me how I can try and run this file through MS Dos Command Prompt! Sorry, I'm not very techy, if any of that doesn't make sense let me know. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, this is my first post to this forum.
Today I installed a 3rd party firewall (COMODO Internet Security) on my laptop and HTPC, that coexists with the VISTA firewall on both.
Both machines have Vista SP2. Both are behaving perfectly.
After the first reboot on the HTPC, I noticed 203 intrusion detections. Further inspection showed a remote IP address 72.27.8.199:1051 hammering my port 56420 every 2 seconds. Seven other remote machines tried the same thing within the same 203 attempts but with ports above 51000 and only once each (e.g. 83.227.24.134:59791).
I was alarmed and searched for my 56420 port, which led me to SVCHOST and a PID. Using PROCESS EXPLORER (I guess you could use task manager) I found out that several services could be using this port, so I started disabling each one, until the port was no longer available in PORT EXPLORER (i guess you could use netstat -ano). This led me to discover that port 56420 was used by BFE or "Base Filtering Engine" (and not to its dependents).

1. Was 72.27.8.199:1051 probing/attacking me?
2. Was 83.227.24.134:59791 probing/attacking me or is there something else going on with this one?

Anyway the intrusion counter soon stopped and I then installed the same firewall on my laptop.
To my amazement intrusion alerts started poping up and their source was my HTPC with port 56420!
The logger showed: HTPC:56420 -> LAPTOP:57312 and also MYPUBLICIP:56420 -> LAPTOP:57312

So I have a base Win 10 image we deploy using SCCM to new systems. This was a clean install setup as a base using Microsoft's suggested practice of customizing using Audit Mode. I've been using this successfully (using Windows PS ISE to do Windows updates to the base image in Audit Mode).

Now comes "upgrade" 1511, which the PS ISE Windows Update checks and identifies as downloadable as an update. However, when it attempts to run, I receive the message "Cannot upgrade in Audit Mode".

I assume this is because 1511 is classified as an upgrade, not an update. Much has been discussed about Microsoft using this "upgrade" model, possibly 2-3 times a year, while using Patch Tuesday updates inbetween them.

This (I would think) causes quite an issue with Administrators who use a base 10 image who want to maintain the latest update without having to create a brand new image each time there is a quarterly "upgrade". Is this really how MS intends to handle this, or is there a way to upgrade the base image and still have the ability to sysprep it?

I've been down the route of registry hacks in order to sysprep an 'upgraded' version of windows (which I know upgraded systems are not sysprepable from MS standpoint) and have had some success with these hacks in 8.1. However, not of these tricks seem to work any longer with 10.

As a test, I simply logged into a copy of my base image after sysprep, did the 1511 up... Read more

Hi all,

Sorry to repeat a question I see a lot of instances of, but none of those seem to be addressing my problem correctly.

I have not done anything new to my computer in recent days, so this problem has caught me off guard (I see most instances of this problem come after upgrading to Windows 7, I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

3. If neither of those work, its likely that because of the fact that when windows is repairing itself, it is generally putting copies of its system files in the same physical location on your disk. Because your disk is obviously not completely dead, ie....its still loading to the windows 7 startup screen, its just copying files to the bad sectors on your hard drive and gets stuck when loading. This is especially my guess because you said Safe mode is having same problems, even after attempting to repair. In the past, I've tried and salvage a disk by reformatting it and only leaving on partitions which do not contain the bad clusters. This takes some time, and some guess work.....and really this is only a "bandaid" fix because once the disk has bad clusters, its only a matter of time before these things give out. You wouldn't want to trust your important data on it anyways....

I hope this leads you in ... Read more

I have been having a problem concerning an error message on my built Windows 10 PC. This error keeps me from doing several tasks on my computer, including downloading firmware updates and downloading/updating applications from the Windows Store. I also cannot install any fonts on my system from a different error, but from research, all 3 of these problems are caused by one thing: Windows Firewall is disabled.

Naturally I went to the Task Manager, went to the Services tab, and tried to re-enable Windows Firewall. However, that failed, giving me the error of "The dependency service or group failed to start." I then checked the dependencies of Windows Firewall in the Services application to find that the Base Filtering Engine is disabled. I believe this may have happened a while back when I disabled several startup applications to troubleshoot an application, and Windows Firewall may have been one of those applications, causing the BFE to be disabled, though I don't know that for sure.

I attempted to enable the BFE by right clicking on its Services entry and hitting "Start", but the option was greyed out. I then tried to change its startup type from "Disabled" to "Automatic", but when I hit "Apply" afterwards, I got the message "Access is Denied". I then re-ran Services as an administrator (my account on the computer an administrator account, btw) and tried again, only to get the same error. I checked the Base Filteri... Read more

In the (famous) post NO KERNEL MEMORY DUMP FILES BEING PRODUCED UPON BSOD?, one of the checklist items is
Quote:

- Page file base allocation size must be > than installed physical RAM

What does that mean exactly? I can think of at least 2 things:
1. the minimum page size
2. the allocation unit size on the disk that contains the page file.

But, if 1, then how does one set this and also set "System Managed".

System Managed usually comes up with a 16MB minimum, which is far less than the amount of memory (which is often 4GB these days).

And, by the way, this dialog box in Windows 7 has both a "Automatically manage page file size for all drives" at the very top, and if that is UNchecked, you can check "System managed" in the middle. I assume you mean the middle one, but maybe not? Maybe the top one?

Now, if "Page file base allocation size must be > than installed physical RAM" means 2 above, then how can that be? 4096 (ie 4K) is pretty standard for disks, and there hasnt been a system sold with that little physical memory in, what 30 years?

So I'm guessing it means something else. But where do you set that, if so?

Thanks!

(great post BTW!!!)

A:what is "Page file base allocation size" exactly

"Page file base allocation size" is the size of the page file when it is created.

If you delete the page file, then re-create it using "system managed" on Vista and Windows 7 systems, the page file size will be allocated greater than physical RAM.

Usually when the machine has a "blank" desktop, the boot/startup process has been interupted or is frozen to before Explorer is launched.

You can launch Explorer manually be navigating C:\Windows and double-clicking "Explorer".

If successful, do the following:

Start>Run>(type) "msconfig" and turn off all non-MS services and all startups.

Then, Start>Run>(type) "cmd", and at the command prompt type "chkdsk /f" and schedule a chkdsk to run on next reboot.

Reboot system and report results.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

Download SDFix from here and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.

It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.

Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.

Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

I have been getting these "Bad Pool Header" and "System Service Exception" BSODs for about a day now (the "Bad Pool Header" one tends to pop up more often then the other btw). I ran a registry cleaner which didn't work and ran memtest this morning and it showed that my memory was fine. The BSODs tend to occur more often when I am playing a game or running some program that uses a bit more memory but it also happens when I am just on the internet. On the other hand, last night I did nothing but surf YouTube for 3 hours and didn't get a BSOD at all. However, since then I haven't been able to do anything for more than 10 minutes (without being in safe mode) without it crashing, and this morning it completely froze until I turned it off. My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. It came preinstalled from the manufacturer and unfortunately I do not have the install disc. The entire laptop is less than 2 years old and there have been no major hardware changes and I have never reinstalled the OS.

A:Random "Bad Pool Header" and "System Service Exception" BSODs

UPDATE: Another BSOD just happened after I left the computer idle for a couple of hours except this one said something about Asdsm.sys.
