Solved: Help! Monitor getting darker and darker...

Q: Solved: Help! Monitor getting darker and darker...

Lately my computer's monitor has been getting gradually darker, even though I have all the brightness settings turned up 100%.
We had this problem last year while our computer was under warrenty and exchanged the monitor, but now we are having the same problem and no warranty.
Someone said something about reinstalling the driver (how, exactly do I go about that??).

I am using Windows XP, the monitor is a Compaq 7550, and I have an ATI Radeon 7500 graphics card installed.

Can someone help me fix this before my screen gets so dark I can't use it?
Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Since this afternoon my display looks darker than usual and with horizontal grey lines going across the screen wherever there is text. Also when I scroll up or down a page or highlight something these grey lines scoll up or down as well, and the screen since to continually flicker. I would greatly appreciate any comments and suggestions to help me solve this problen. I know is not the monitor since I try a different one on the same machine with no change on the display. I have also increased the refresh rate to 80. Once again thank you for your help.

Hello Yat, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you're using Internet Explorer, then you could use the method (step 5 and 6) in the tutorial below to specify a darker webpage font to be used instead.

You'll probably need to try a few of the fonts until you find one that works best for you though. Arial Black is a good dark one though.

I currently started using a new monitor and im having an issue with my jpegs that is leaving my quite confused.

I use photoshop for most of my digital art, and with this new monitor, ive noticed a decrease in light value when viewing JPEGs. If i save a psd file as jpeg and a png, opening both files in windows photo viewer yield slightly darker results. Alternatively if i open both the jpeg and png back in photo shop, they look as intended. Ive tried several different things in photo shop regarding my color profile, srgb and such with no result.

If i save an image of my art off the web as a jpeg, its darker, if i then open that same jpeg in photoshop, it appears exactly as it did on the web. Now if I print screen of that jpeg, then save it as a jpeg again, its even darker. If i then once again print screen and save as a jpeg it gets even darker, doing this 7-10 times will result in a completely black image.

I have calibrated the monitor manually to the best of my ability and did not have this problem before.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this ^^ Its quite important that i understand what is happening here so i can correct it or change my method to avoid images for clients look other then what i had intended.

My uncle has a nVidia GeForce 6200 and the daughter keeps playing The Sims 2, The Sims Expansion Pack and Sims Pets, it appears when she plays these games he has problems with the PC... namely he gets a 'Blue Screen' appearing now and again (BSOD im unsure as he didnt mention any errors or warning messages) and the brightness of the screen drops... (I noticed the resolution changed but I dunno if that was him)

he has a 22" IIyama ProLite E2200WS powered by nVidia GeForce 6200... he has never really had problems before and I 'think' it may have been since The Sims (or one of the ext. packs) has been installed...

we used the nVidia settings manager to adjust brightness which he said sorted the problem but Im suspicious it hasnt actually sorted it but make it look better (I have not been at the machine but connect via Remote Assistance)

I've already asked this here, but would like a second opinion.

As many of you possibly did a few days ago, I also updated to Firefox 3.6.4 on a system that I occasionally use (not my main one), and after updating, the update screen alerted me to update to Flash 10.1. So I followed the link to the Flash site (didn't opt to install that Norton thing) and it installed some Adobe Installer thing as an add-on to Firefox, and when the Installer screen came up, it said nothing except "Finish" or whatever. The Flash site still said I had 10.0 installed so I tried again and the Installer told me there was an error installing. But I was still seeing Flash stuff just fine.

When I opened up Task Manager, it told me I had something running called "getPlusPlusAdobe.exe"

So I restarted Firefox, returned to the Flash completion screen and told me I needed to install Flash to view the completion animation. So I when I clicked on "get plugin" it sent me into the Flash installation I know and everything is (apparently) fine and dandy now, but "getPlusPlusAdobe" was still running so I ended that process, uninstalled that Flash Installer plug-in and restarted Firefox to see if the Flash installation stuck and it did.

Anyways, I went and tested this new Flash update on Youtube, and a handful of videos seem slightly darker than I remember them to be (although it might be possible that my eyes could be deceiving me). I certainly have 10.1 now, ... Read more

All drivers are up to date, I have not updated the BIOS yet though. Questions:I.Has anyone had the same issue? Is this common or just my particular device is bad? II.What could be the possible cause of this? Could this be caused by the semi-matte film? So, if I removed the film, would this problem disappear? If anyone has had the same issue and solved it by removing the film, I would love to hear from it.Or is this rather a backlight issue, meaning that the screen or its electronics has to be replaced/fixed in the repair center? (I did not expect this to happen to a brand new product anyway.) Thank you for your help in advance!Andras

Have a Samsung SyncMaster T220 LCD monitor that is just over 4 years old. It's hooked via digital cable to my XP desktop. The Desktop wallpaper is Azul (picture of a small sandbar with 3 palm trees and clear, blue water and blue sky). About 10 days ago, I noticed what appeared to be two finger smudges (blue was just slightly darker there) in the middle of the screen, so tried to remove them with my microfiber cloth slightly wetted with Windex. Turns out they're not finger smudges; they're part of the monitor's display and cannot be removed.

I have never exposed the monitor to liquids other than a slightly damp cloth to clean finger prints. I've never put heavy pressure on the screen. So how did the monitor acquire these small blotches that are just slightly darker than the color surrounding them, and do they indicate that the monitor is beginning to fail?

This is a desktop, with 2 monitors attached? If you switch the monitors, make the secondary the primary, and visa versa, does the flashing move to the other monitor, or remain on the same monitor? If the problem remains on the same monitor, it's likely a monitor failure. If so, does the monitors menus (On screen display = OSD) also flash, or only the video in the background? My satellite is pretty new, I bought it 2 months ago. I already wrote toshiba an email, but I did not have an answer yet.
When I boot my laptop, the light is very bright, just as it has to be. But after 5 minutes, it changes to a darker shade. Not very dark, but a slight gray layer. It has done this now for 2 weeks or so.

I looked for the settings for the brightness of the display, but they are on maximum. What I am wondering is that the controller is at the maximum, but it says that is only 70 (instead of 100 which I assume would be the real maximum).

Also with the FN keys it does not change, because there it is also at the highest brightness level. I just do not know what to do next. Maybe a driver is needed or do you think the display is broken?

I hope you all understood me.

Thanks

I am feeling really frustrated here and would be incredibly grateful for your help. I just CANCELLED my custom built Lenovo 920 order because Lenovo sales has been UNABLE to answer my SIMPLE QUESTION on whether the COPPER is lighter in color than the BRONZE or vice versa. I am paying over 2,000+ dollars for this Lenovo 920 and you would think that Lenovo would at least be able to tell me and/or have accurate photos of the colors this laptop comes in! Considering the huge amount of money I am spending I should be entitled to receive the laptop in my preferred color... don't you think!! I would love to have the lighter golden colored one (not the darker brown color). Once second Lenovo sales tells me the COPPER is darker than the BRONZE and then the next second I am told the COPPER is lighter than the BRONZE and then I am again told vice versa!... so now I have no clue what to think! Hi!
I recently bought a DVI cable to plug my external LG monitor to my laptop to run nVidia's DualView (stretch format) across the two monitors. I'm using a beta driver (169.04 from laptopvideo2go.com), and when I enter nVidia control panel and go into the setup additional monitors tab, it only lets me choose "choose only ONE monitor". So I did that just to test that my monitor was plugged in right, and it worked. So I KNOW that my monitor is working and is being recognized by Vista. But when going into display settings byt right clicking on my desktop, it also only recognizes 1 monitor. Is it my beta display driver messing my Vista up? Or what could it be?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Question: How can I reactivate my monitor without reformatting the hard drive?
This is what happened:
Two monitors were hooked to my computer, (Dell Inspiration), and I had to reduce it into one monitor.

I opened: screen resolution
Clicked on: Advanced settings
Clicked on: Monitor
Clicked on: Driver
Clicked on: Disable

After I did that, one monitor became completely dark, and the second monitor display was if it would run in safe mode, (graphic quality was so bad, it hurt to my eyes to watch it). I checked the device list and both monitor was removed from the list, there were no monitor listed anymore (before they were there).
I tried the system restore, but after the system restore finished, there were no more connection with the monitor.
When I start the computer, the monitor works for few seconds, shows the start up process, and right after the windows logo displayed, it shuts off. I tried to reboot in "safe mode", and it starts up as usual, (the monitor works), but before it reaches the desktop screen, it shuts off.
Windows version is: Windows 7
Computer: DELL Inspiration 546s
Operating System: 64-bit

If it is a Yellow Exclamation mark, then you need to download the video driver for your model. First try Right clicking the yellow mark and then Uninstall. Then Right click any device and choose Scan For Hardware Changes, this should reinstall the previous Video Driver, then restart the computer in normal mode.
If that doesn't work, Go to the Dell Support/Download drivers site Product Support | Dell US type in your service tag # or make and model# and download the Video driver for your model.

Im doing this for my Dad, so i have absolutely no idea how to describe the problem but i figured this place was my best shot as google is giving me no results on my query.
There appears to be no monitor drivers installed on the pc... and its running from the bare minimum settings. I think the refresh rate is set at a low low low setting, because lets say, if i move a window by dragging it across the screen, its all choppy, doesnt move smoothly at all... sort of like it jumps every half a second until i stop moving my mouse, then stops. The same with when i'm scrolling in internet explorer... smooth scrolling doesnt exsist! lol

I figured it was a driver problem seeing as there wasnt one installed. So i found the disk with the drivers on, and followed the instructions, which were as follows:
"Right Click" the mouse anywhere on the "BLANK" area on the desktop and click on PROPERTIES.
Click the SETTINGS tab and then click ADVANCED.
Click the MONITOR tab and then click PROPERTIES.
Under MONITOR PROPERTIES, click DRIVER then click UPDATE DRIVER.
On the HARDWARE UPDATE WIZARD, select Install from a list of specific location (ADVANCED) then click Next.
On the next HARDWARE UPDATE WIZARD window, select DON’T SEARCH, I WILL CHOOSE THE DRIVER TO INSTALL. Then click NEXT.

Whenever i play one of my high quality games such as "Assassins Creed, Tomb Raider, Battlefield 3 or Primal Carnage" the monitor goes completely blank showing a "no signal to monitor" sign after gaming for between 5 minutes to up to 2-3 hours. The monitor sometimes also shows different color stripes either for examples: orange, pink or grey. The sound of my friends on skype usually keeps going for about 20 seconds before going silent, the sound of the game shuts off instantly or goes in a loop or starts with a loud buzzing sound. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to computer, ah, specs (or finding information about the one I have)... so I don't have much for you to go on.

Computer is a Dell, with Windows XP Home Edition. Monitor is LCD.

A few days ago (around Wednesday morning) my monitor began to click on and off. The screen would flash black and the light, next to the on/off button, would flash from green (on) to yellow/orange (off). At first it wasn't that bad. When I switched pages on the internet, scrolled, or highlighted something on the page it would flash.
It steadily got worse, going from internet pages to flashing on and off right when I turned the computer on, all through the loading and welcome screens.
I thought maybe it was just the monitor, so I switched it out and hooked up my old hp pavilion mx70 monitor.

That monitor worked perfectly fine with my old tower, but when hooked up to my new one it... Erm, got 'static-y'. It looked like an old TV that had a VHS tape in the player, being re-wound. I know that sounds odd, but it was like spikes from the side of the screen surging inwards. I thought it was because the monitor was so much older than the tower. Soon the static got steadily worse, and I used it for about a day before it got to be too much.

I switched to Safe Mode with Networking on the hp monitor, to see what would happen, and it was fine! No static. Today, I switched back to my LCD monitor and put that into Safe Mode with Networking and no b... Read more

Video card is busted. When in safe mode, the video card's drivers are not loaded, so the card does not function at "full blast". It will not cause trouble because of that.
Dell model would help finding a replacement, but it can well be assumed that there's a PCI-E 16x slot for add-on graphics. This would be a cheap replacement in that case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121302

This is all an assumption on the most propable cause. The problem could also be your power supply or motherboard, but those are pretty unlikely.

The only thing I'm worry about is that I won't be able to have different "spaces" for my windows that they could expand to (so I could have, for example, my e-mail on the right part, and my browser on the left).

All I've found so far are virtual desktop software, but that's not what I need. I'm looking for something that splits the visible desktop into multiple parts.

So my nice monitor died, I ran the desktop at 1600x1200. My old monitor has a max of 1024x768.

I have a project for work on this machine, but I can't access it now. Any ideas how to get my smaller display to display... something?

I've tried rebooting into safe mode, as soon as it's done with the bios and loading windows screen, it jumps to 'out of range 75kHz / 60Hz' and displays nothing.

Any ideas? Thanks,

-bort

You have given no info to work with. If your MB has onboard video go into the Bios and change to onboard. Are you sure its going into Safe mode, there are no video drivers loaded in safe mode.

Hi all, thanks in advance for your attention.

I'm using a television (32p) as a second monitor in extended mode so that I can watch a movie in the TV and play a game in the monitor (this was my main goal). Monitor and TV lays in two different ambients, both connected to the same pc, one by normal VGA cable and the other by HDMI. I managed to differentiate the audio output so that VLC player sends it's audio to the HDMI (so that only the TV plays it) and the rest of system sounds, media players and games outputs to the speakers (basically only the VLC audio is directed to another output device). I reached my goal so that I can watch a movie fullscreen in the TV and play a game in the monitor fullscreen too without any interference from one another (nor audio or video).

The thing is, because I have the TV in another ambient I can't actually see what's going on in it, as I just "throw" the VLC window to the TV from my main monitor. And here's the question: There's a way to see the TV's desktop in my monitor? Without having to set it as main monitor so to not really switch between desktops.. The perfect thing would be if I could see the TV's desktop in a window like in remote desktops applications.

Just and example of what it could be:

Ps.: 1) This forum is really great, I gave a look around and it's plenty of useful info and loads of bravo users ready to answer any kind of question. Compliments!

I just connected my new Samsung Syncmaster 2333HD TV/Monitor to my desktop computer for use as a monitor. After powering up the unit I was prompted to scan for available television channels. As I noted, however, I want to use it as a monitor instead of a TV. Since it's already hooked up to my computer, I figure it should be a relatively easy setup process, but so far I haven't been able to figure it out. I've already set up the language, time zone, DST, etc., but all I have onscreen now is a box which reads HDMI in the upper left-hand corner, and a box which reads NO SIGNAL in the center. What should I do next?

I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who can tell me how to get the unit recognized as a computer monitor. Thank you very much.

Hooray! All I did was reboot and the WINDOWS screen appeared. I guess that's all there was to it.

Did you get a DVI Cable with the Monitor.
It's best to have the DVI Cable from the VGA Card to the Monitor.

If your VGA Card has no DVI output then you might want to think about getting a VGA to DVI Adaptor

Otherwise it will be OK as it is.

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium , 64 bit
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 975 Processor, AMD64 Family 16 Model 4 Stepping 3
RAM: 8191 Mb
Graphics Card: (Dual) HIS ATI Radeon HD 5770, 1024 Mb (CrossfireX enabled)
Motherboard: MSI, 890FXA-GD70 (MS-7640) , 1.0

I built a new computer recently and all was going well until I tried to set up dual monitor on this new computer. My monitors are both Acer, models AL1916W and P191W. I'm coming from a system that had 32bit xp with an nVidia GTS250 running dual monitors.

I have windows 7 up to date on the new computer and ATI drivers are up to date as well. The issue that I'm having is my P191 monitor is not being pulled out of standby and windows, as well at ATI CCC, says it only supports a 640x400 resolution. I've tried plugging this monitor in solo in every DVI port in my primary ATI card, swapped both cables, and swapped card positions, yet the monitor still stays in standby whilst my AL1916 runs like a champ and I can edit all of it's settings. I've gone through all the options in ATI CCC to set up dual monitors and I get nothing. I didn't have a problem with the P191 on my XP system.

So how can I get my P191 monitor working? ATI CCC and windows knows that the monitor is there and they both can identify the model of the monitor, but windows refers to it as a generic non-PnP monitor (the AL1916 is refered to as a generic PnP monitor). I tried to see if there are any drivers for the P191 mon... Read more

First, make sure your video card drivers are up to date. Second check in device manager to make sure it actually recognizes the monitor, if it does, remove/uninstall it, and let it reinstall the monitor. then go to the screen resolution and click on detect, if it still cannot recognize the monitor and allow you to change the resolution, I'd say the next step would be to go into your graphics card driver software, but unfortunately, I'm an Nvidia junkie and don't know how to use ATI's software.

I hope I helped =D.
