E7440/E7240/E.... keyboard trim for trackpoint-less (=upper mousebutton-less) keyboard

Q: E7440/E7240/E.... keyboard trim for trackpoint-less (=upper mousebutton-less) keyboard

Dear Dell community,
the E7440/E7420 (and I think many others) has keyboards with (e.g. 04W6PV 08PP00) or without trackpoint (e.g. . RXKD2 0RXKD2)
Subsequently the upper mousebuttons (A12AN5) can/should be removed (which is possible).
However, then I would need another keyboard trim covering the space where the upper mousebuttons have been.
I haven't found any different keyboard trim than 29FWC 029FWC (the one with a recess for the upper mouse buttons). I also didn't find a "filler" for the upper mouse buttons.
A trackpoint-less keyboard can be installed in a laptop with the upper mouse buttons still in place, but it's rather tight and the mouse buttons cannot be pushed properly any more, so should be disconnected.
How do I properly convert a trackpoint-enabled laptop to a trackpoint-less one?
kind regards

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:E7440 - Make backlit keyboard always on

Ok I've found the Feature Enhancement Pack. This adds the necessary settings.
But on first attempts choosing 'never' switch off seems to be broken and it actually turning the backlight off permanently. I've set it to '5 mins' which keeps the backlight on, but 'never' turns it off completely...

Just purchased a Dell Latitude E7440 and cannot get the keyboard backlight to turn on. I tried the FN right arrow, but that doesn't do anything.

A:E7440 Keyboard Backlight does not work

Hi xrajncajnx,
The backlit keyboard was optional on the E7440. Fn and right arrow is the correct key combination so I would check if it was a backlit keyboard that was originally fitted. You can do this by entering your service tag into the support site:
Click on the "System Configuration" tab and then "Components" to expand the list. The type of keyboard you have will be listed there.

What I first thought would be a simple keyboard problem apparently isn't. When I type the upper case D using the right shift button, I only can get a lower case "d". When using the left shift button, I get nothing but a cursor flash and no letter at all. If I hit the D key again (2nd time) holding down the left shift button, I do finally get the upper case D and as many as I want thereafter.

What I have done so far: Thinking this was a bad keyboard, I purchased a brand new keyboard.......same problem. I then borrowed the keyboard off my wife's computer which is working well.........same problem on my computer. So not likely a keyboard problem. I then uninstalled the keyboard driver and re-installed it THREE TIMES........still same problem. This is an HP Media Center computer with XP Pro so I downloaded the very latest keyboard driver for this keyboard and installed.........still same problem. Of course I rebooted after each install.

I then went to the PC Doctor diagnostic tools and did the keyboard test which puts a keyboard on the screen and as you press each key, it blanks out the key pressed on the screen. All keys work find except for when I go to upper case with either shift button and type the letter D. Instead of just the D going blank on the screen, the C key and the CTRL key go blank also at the very same time. So for some reason my D key is being translated somewhere into a D, C with the CTRL button signal. How can that be?

I have a P52, Xeon processor, 32 GB, 2 NVMe SSDs.   I have a bug where the keyboard/trackpoint completely stop responding. I need to close the lid so the laptop goes to sleep and reopen it and both devices come back to life.  This problem has happend with Windows 10 x64  1803 / 1809 / and now 1903.  For my 1903 build, I literally had NOTHING installed but the core O/S and the problem occurred. I had not installed any Lenovo drivers. For 1803 and 1809 builds, I had all the latest Lenovo ThinkPad drivers running.  I cannot find the common thread which might be causing this issue.  Has this happened to anyone else ?

I have always used an IBM lap with a trackpoint mouse (that small little nub above the "B" key).

I purchased a similar keyboard for my desktop (IBM part #84H8566) and have been relatively happy with it. Plugged into the back of the computer, it takes up both PS/2 ports (for the keyboard, itself, and the mouse).

My question is this: I want to keep using my keyboard, but I'd like to add an external trackball and mouse (probably a Microsoft Intellipoint or a Logitech). I particularly want the ability to have a scroll wheel.

Does anyone out there know if there is any way to add this trackball/mouse and avoid a software conflict as I go from trackpoint/keyboard to trackball/mouse?

And....if no one out there has an answer, do you have a tech support number at IBM I could call (with or without a $$$ tech charge). I've been all over IBM's site and I can't find a "non-subscription" one-time tech number to call.

Thanks much !!

Well, I messed with the registry when I shouldn't have done, and now my mouse and keyboard aren't working. Lesson learned.

I was trying to fix an external hard drive that had stopped working, and was told to delete the Upper Bounds from the registry in certain places. Unfortunately I seem to have deleted them from the wrong places. My computer will load Windows until the password screen, then I can't use my mouse or keyboard whatsoever.

I have tried Googling various solutions to this problem but haven't yet found a solution that works for my problem specifically.

I've tried Safe Mode (the same thing happens), and trying to boot from my Windows CD installation from the CD drive doesn't make any difference. I have installed the Major Geeks recovery software to a USB hard drive (http://majorgeeks.com/UBCD4Win_d5710.html), have tried to recover Windows by pressing R, and have got to the stage where I have a command prompt. It's asked me for the Admin password, now I've got a C:\WINDOWS> prompt. What do I need to type for it to tell my mouse and keyboard to work?

My computer is getting on a bit (I've had it over four years, albeit with various re-installs of Windows), and I'm only really bothered about recovering the data on there and am happy to re-install Windows then. Is it just easier to visit a local friendly computer shop, recover my data, pay a few quid for the pleasure, then re-install Windows?

Hello,  Please help me resolve an issue related to my keyboard. The upper cover plate of the keyboard on one side has peeled off slightly (as shown on the images). The keyboard, itself, is perfectly fine and properly seated in the keyboard bay. The glue probably dried out there. Please suggest what glue should I use to firmly fix the top panel at that end to the base plate underneath it? If it requires another type of fix, please suggest. The keyboard is fine and doesn't need to be replaced. Thanks!Notice the loose edge.I can pull it out slightly.

Hi there, a buddy of mine got a ibm r52 laptop recently from a relative that sat for a few months. anyways, it was given to him and it worked great for about a week then he noticed issues with the keyboard, trackpoint, scroll pad and buttons not working sometimes after boot.
And when they dont work...they dont work. Its not a on and off thing...its either or.

So he has me looking at it...

I dont think its a big issue b/c the keyboard will ALWAYS work when i want to go into the BIOS. I loaded up a Acronis TI boot disk and the keyboard and trackpoint worked fine...but then i tried it again and only the keyboard worked and no trackpoint or pad.

So far i have tried updating the BIOS and embedded controller to the latest with no luck.
Ive also tried a quick fresh install....no luck...still either on or off.

However, if i plug my usb wireless mouse in the mouse cursor works fine...always...

So i guess my next step is to open her up, but im waiting to hear back on any suggestions first....and i got to find a service manual for it...
Thanks for reading.

Lenovo, I've just upgraded my Yoga 260 to a brand new Yoga X380, which is the most expensive Lenovo computer I've ever purchased since this year's crop of computers is fantastically expensive for some reason.  I really didn't mind spending great money on a ThinkPad though, since it is supposed to be an excellent computer.  I've purchased about 16 of them personally since my first ThinkPad 600E.  However... I'm beside myself with a fundamental flaw in this latest computer: The keyboard and TrackPoint buttons are MUSHY.  That is, the same terrible keyboard and mouse action that you'd get on a Dell or something.  You can feel the rubber movement underneath it.  THIS IS NOT A THINKPAD KEYBOARD.   The trackpoint buttons are mushy garbage, you can't even tell when it is "clicked" or not, they're just soft nothingness. I'm incredibly disappointed.  Can I send this back to you and have you put a REAL THINKPAD KEYBOARD in it?  One that has firm key response?  One that lives up to the ThinkPad name?  I can't stand using this computer with this terrible keyboard.

A:X380 Keyboard and Trackpoint Buttons "mushy" - can I get another one?

Follow up to my own posting, it looks like there are Chicony and Sunrex keyboard and mouse FRUs for this computer. Is one of these keyboards the "real" ThinkPad quality I'm used to and the other less so? If so, can I get these parts exchanged?

Hi everyoneI'm in a bit of a pickle. My old keyboard on my x230 (running win10 pro) was utterly worn out so I decided to replace it which is easy enough. However now the mouse buttons for the trackpoint are not working. The trackpad and the trackpoint itself along with the rest of the board work "flawlessly" but not the three buttons for the trackpoint. I'v tried removing and reinstalling the Synaptic drivers, both the newest version and an older one recomended on a different forum. I have triple double checked the board connection is firmly attached and that all the settings in both BIOS and the synaptic panel are set as normal but still no luck. Any help or advice to solve this would be greatly appriciated.

With my new Thinkpad T490, it appears that the pointer / trackpoint occasionally behaves oddly. When holding down the center button and moving the trackpoint to scroll, I expect that the pointer would stay in-place on the screen and any vertical movement of the trackpoint results in scrolling. This is mostly the case, however, occasionally the pointer would "slip" on the screen making scrolling very annoying. This is even though the middle button is firmly held down and not being released. Is this expected behavior? I don't recall this happening on my old T460p, so I'm not sure if I have a defective unit or just buggy software/drivers.

Could someone from Lenovo let the forum know if it will be possible to replace the W540 Trackpad / Bezel / Keyboard assembly with the new one from the W541 which has integrated physical Trackpoint buttons.  This would make a very big difference to me and I suspect a lot of other W540 owners who use the Trackpoint. I am the current owner of 5 Thinkpads and have been a loyal customer since the 600 series. The increased pressure necessary to generate a less reliable click on the Trackpad has greatly exacerbated a problem with the top joint of my right thumb - I have had to retrain myself to use my left thumb to do all clcking.  The problem was nowhere near as bad on the old Trackpoint buttons - where I could use them with my right thumb for several hours with no symptoms, I can now manage only minutes.

A:Replace W540 Keyboard with W541 Trackpoint Buttons

Add me to the list of W540 that wish to have a real workstation with original IBM style trackpad WITH BUTTONS! Similarly, we need to somehow add an LED to indicate HD I/O's. Maybe integrate this into the new PROPER trackpad. Example: Right now I'm copying off my NAS, 2.5 gig of PDF files catalogued by Calibre. The transfer has been running over 2 hours and only 35% done, and I have NO IDEA if data is transferring when the screen blanks out.  Thankfully, Western Digital's external Passport drive has an LED that flashes with the I/O, and this is the ONLY indicator that tells me the NAS data flowing and being backed up to the USB drive. Crypting does slow the data. Now, I realize that what I'm doing is not the best - using my WiFi connect for the transfer and USB 3.0 -, which is slow on this 'marketing promoted' Workstation. Hopefully I stuck it in the right port, as none are color blue identified, left front. ....  I'm blue <g>.

I was having responsiveness issues with the trackpad for a while, then, i open my laptop one day and it's completely unresponsive, as well has the backlit keyboard not working (the hotkey still pops up that it's "lighting up" the keyboard, but no actual lights) and the trackpoint being completely unresponsive too. I've tried:- Restarting computer- Using Lenovo's various "fixing" softwares- Looking for a keyboard firmware shortcut for enabling/disabling trackpad, (doesn't exist on this computer)- Re installing drivers (Ultranav driver refuses to install manually, "driver installation failed")- Booting on a non microsoft OS (Booted on a linux Mint installation and it still doesn't work)- Booting into BIOS and looking for "enable/disable trackpad option", That option does not exist for me.- Opening up computer and checking the physical connection, All plugged in fine. When i open the device manager in windows there is no entry for the mouse whatsoever. The touch screen and the pen both work fine. I think it all points towards a hardware issue, i can pick up another trackpad on ebay for pretty cheap, but obviously i'd like to make sure that it would actually solve the issues.  The major confusion for me is that why would faulty trackpad hardware stop the backlit keyboard from lighting up? How are the two linked? Any ideas appreciated, Thanks!

Hi SPea63,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
It would help if you can add a snapshot of the part to help us get perhaps specific part number.
If this is one specific with a single key, I don't think there are available parts as OEM would replace the entire keyboard (page 44). Other non official key replacement provider may be helpful instead like this as example.
Update us soon as convenient.

Hello All I have Lenovo G50 80 laptop; it?s a full 15.6 inch laptop with DVD drive, full keyboard, touch pad. Last year i started having problem with laptop, as touchpad stopped working the arrow cursor got stuck on screen, and will only work again if i press any key on keyboard. It will only work for few seconds and minutes then again stuck. Also the arrow or delete key stayed in loop, whenever i open anything to type, the cursor in text field kept moving to left or keep deleting the text. The service center guy told me that it is due to Keyboard and touchpad getting short due to moisture or something, they changed the keyboard. Now after one year again i am facing same problem. Same thing happening again and again. It?s very irritating. It seems there is some hardware or design fault in the way Lenovo has designed their keyboard and touchpad. I live in Mumbai, so may be due to monsoon there is moisture in air and it may be affecting this design. But again i have never seen this issue in any other laptop brands of competitor. Can anyone please help me how can i fix this on my own, as laptop is not under warranty and i don?t want to keep changing laptop every year. May be someone with hardware repair knowledge can help me here. Can I short or cut or sholder any cables, any circuit, I don?t know just help me guys to fix this. Anyone from Lenovo listening please have a look it a big problem. Thanks

Hi all. I have already posted this once here. The topic had quite a few views and not a single reply. I'm giving this another try, as the problem persists and is not getting any better.

The keyboard on my Aurora m9700 is having some strange issues. I cannot figure if it is software or hardware related, either. At random intervals, the keyboard will cease function. But when I go into standby, then come out of standby the problem seems to be magically fixed! In fact, the problem just happened right after I finished typing the last sentence. I checked event manager, nothing changed. I had to go into standby and come out of it...

So please, is there anyone on here that can help me out? I have reformatted the computer since this started happening and nothing has changed, so I do not know what could possibly be causing this!

Just going to keep bumping this until I get a reply, or bet banned. Every thread has some form of reply...maybe I smell or something?

Hi, I have a Lenovo Flex 2 14 which came with a British keyboard but I noticed you can take off the keyboard and swap it out for another one - you can find backlit versions, or a version with a different layout. I got a keyboard for it with Japanese hiragana on it, but the laptop doesn't seem to recognise any of the extra keys this keyboard comes with which have key codes not used by other languages. These keys include: | -? \ ??????the ????, ???? and ???? toggleI would have assumed this was to do with the fact that these are keys from a 106/109 key layout as opposed to the standard 102 key, so I replaced the keyboard driver with Microsoft's 106/109 key keyboard driver, but that hasn't had any effect - it still can't see these keys being pressed. The ??/?? ?? key works because it uses the same key code as the tilde on other keyboards, but that's all. My hypothesis for why this might not be possible to fix is that the ribbon connection between the keyboard and the motherboard could only support 102-key layouts in Europe, and therefore the only way to be able to use these extra input conversion keys without a different motherboard altogether would be to use an external USB keyboard. I may have just made up what I said about the motherboard though, so does anyone know if there's a driver I can use to solve this problem and be able to use the extra keys? I can't just use a key mapper like KeyTweak ... When I use the hard keyboard and sometimes even the onscreen keyboard its as if either Ctrl, Alt Win or something are pressed down as it just types shortcuts.

-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via onscreen keyboard types as normal
-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via hard keyboard brings up -Chrome://history- But now also on the onscreen keyboard Ctrl is Highlighted.
I click on the onscreen keyboard to deactivate the now highlighted Ctrl button and try again. Now things are different, as now both the onscreen keyboard and the hard keyboard both bring up ?Chrome://history- when -H- is typed ( Shift is not depressed )

This seems to randomly cycle one min onscreen keyboard works fine, next the keyboard works fine or they either work or none of the work rendering the computer useless.

I cant help feel it?s a software issue but im no pro and I don?t have an additional external keyboard to try but as the onscreen and hard keyboard work ok for a while sometimes I assume something is up and that?s what brought me here.

From what I have read Yoga 13 Silver does not have the slot required for backlit, but aside that, will the keyboard function and will it fit (dimension-wise)? If so, what is the voltage and current required? Would soldering a small battery to the backlit cable be a good idea (I accept the fact that I wouldn't be able to regulate it)? Thank you in advance!ck

Hi! I've got Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 Silver (https://www.alza.cz/EN/lenovo-ideapad-yoga-13-silver-d375124.htm), and while I am quite content with the device, my keyboard stopped working. I was wondering whether any of you might know and suggest an online reseller (official or otherwise), where I could get hold of a replacement keyboard. Now, I suppose backlit keyboard versions of newer Yoga laptops will not work I guess, will they? From what I have read Yoga 13 Silver does not have the slot required for backlit, but aside that, will the keyboard function and will it fit (dimension-wise)? If so, what is the voltage and current required? Would soldering a small battery to the backlit cable be a good idea (I accept the fact that I wouldn't be able to regulate it)? Thank you in advance!ck

On the Thin Client ( HP ) is a keyboard connected (HP UK-1156)
In device manager there is the HP Elite USB Keyboard but it is not working. (says no driver installed)

On other computers with the same keyboard it does work. Even installs a driver without a problem. (default keyboard driver)
So its not the keyboard..

A: how come its not getting its driver?
B: anyone know where to get the driver for this keyboard?
C: any other solution to this problem?

Please no standard answering as reboot the computer or uninstall device in device manager. this has been done.
