Black Screen + White Underscore in Upper Left Corner

Q: Black Screen + White Underscore in Upper Left Corner

My computer is about a year old now, built by me and my dad. Recently it's been having some issues though-- for a while I think it was over heating, causing it to reboot. At least I hope it was just overheating. One time when I booted up my computer it told me overclocking failed, which was odd because I hadn't messed with any of the settings (all still defaults).

But heres the major issue: If you boot it up, after the BIOS it'll give you a black screen with a blinking underscore up in the left corner. If you're quick enough you can get it to go into safe mode, etc. You can also choose which drive to boot from--- I found that it only gives you the black screen with certain drives. But, I did notice that its very slow when you have the "loading" screen for windows-- it'll slowly fade in and start loading, then it goes to a normal speed.

Specs:
IntelCore2CPU [email protected]
Nvidia 8800 GTS (640 MB)
4 GB RAM (although I can't use it all...)
Don't know much about my mobo except its a P5K

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I could be a memory issue. Try removing RAM one stick at a time and seeing if any of them are causing it. Then try them individually in each slot. It could be the motherboard if only one slot is faulty.

I can still start the computer by going to boot menu and choosing HD at the start of setup. But if I don't press f8 then my comp will not boot up.

I don't have a clue whats wrong with it. I had to reinstall vista but still the same problems. Please help.

Hi, suggests it's not seeing your disk at all - nothing to boot from.

Check your connections, check your disk - e.g. using a live boot disk or connect it to another PC.

If you can manage to read it again, run chkdsk on it.

First backup any files you want off of the computer with an Ubuntu Live CD saving to an external USB HDD/Flash Drive.
If you have a Windows 7 DVD or Restore CD put that in the computer and choose your language and then Restore Your Computer.
If you do not have a disc, then you probably have a restore partition. Restart the computer on the logo screen when you see the message Press (Key) to Enter E-Recovery do so, this will restore your computer to Factory Defaults. Be sure to backup first.

Hi guys,

The other day I was using my old desktop and using firefox when suddenly firefox froze up while browsing and I was unable to ctrl+alt+del or click start or anything for that matter in order to close it down. I then turned off my computer manually by pressing the power button as I sometimes do when my computer freezes and turned it back on. Unfortunately, when I turned it back on the computer is stuck on the black screen with the blinking underscore in the top left hand corner.

I unfortunately am not good with computers and would like to avoid reformatting my computer, as this old desktop contains the largest amount of my media such as music and movies that I had been meaning to put onto an external hard drive. Furthermore, I do not have an XP installation disc and am unable to locate the system recovery discs that came with the PC (like I said, it's old, circa 2006, and they are most likely lost somewhere in the house or thrown out by now). Thank you for all the help and support in advance.

if you haven't tried, as you switch on press the F8 key up and down repeatedly, if this works you will be at the safe mode menu - try last known good config. If still no go, try booting to BIOS - if this doesn't work I would say hard drive issue. Download the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic program, this has to be burned to a disk. Then put the disk in and let it boot the pc and run the test.

Hey I just went through something very similar. I found that my SATA cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard had failed. I replaced it with a new SATA cable, and it booted right up. Try the cable first if you have one lying around, plus its a cheap solution. If you replace the cable and it still won't boot up, it might be your hard drive. Seeing as how your machine is that old, it could fail at any time.

Do you get anything on the screen when you turn it on?

This is my first time posting here. Please forgive my ignorance, as I'm super not tech-savvy at all.

I'm going to try to explain what's going on as best as I can to see if anyone can throw me a bone here.

I have a Dell Inspiron 531, about 4 years old, and it's worked just fine up until yesterday.

I plugged my Canon camera into the front USB port to grab some photos off of it, when my computer froze. I had to hold down the power button to get it to shut off.

I restarted, and found that after the Dell logo comes up, the screen goes black except for a white cursor that flashes in the upper right hand corner. This has been going on since last night.

The only two options it gives me appear during the Dell logo screen when I can hit either F12 for the boot menu or F2 for startup menu. Once the screen goes black and I see that cursor, key punching does nothing.

I'm not sure if this is worth mentioning but, at one point, I somehow found myself at a memory diagnostics menu and it ran and found no errors but then froze at 99%. I have no idea how I was able to do that, and I can't find it again.

Sorry if I left out any info. Anyone have an idea on what I can do to start troubleshooting?

Hi,

I have an issue with a white rectangular box appearing in the top left corner of my laptop screen.

It covers the icons behind it and renders them 'unclickable'.

Nothing happens if the box itself is clicked on.

It does not stay on top of other windows, just the desktop.

It appears after the laptop has been to sleep and on occasions, just seems to appear randomly.

I believe it may be a problem with Display Link drivers i use for a universal adapter for multiple monitors. I have asked around on display links forums but i am yet to find a solution (updated all drivers, uninstalled, re-installed, etc.), so i thought I would ask you guys if you have any ideas.

Other places i have found similar issues:

I have attached a screenshot of the issue.

any help would be appreciated.

So I was running through westfall on my gnome mage (ALT) and bumped into a much lower level ripper, as usual frost nova and keep running! But my system crashed, couldn't alt + tab or clsoe the program. Rebooted my computer which I have own for approx 5 months and it reads the motherboard fine then goes onto this black screen with a white flashing underscore. IF you leave it long enough it moves to another screen within the bios asking you what state you want to boot windows up in. None of my keyboard buttons work on this page and when the timer runs from 30 to 0 instead of booting up it just crash's...

Once i got a step further and I was on the XP loading screen but it never loaded.

So I just got my new Dell studio xps 16" laptop on Saturday. I reinstalled using my own Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit disk and have had absolutely no problems.

However today, I noticed that there is a single bright white pixel in the top left corner of my screen exactly at the (0,0) position.

It seems to only show up on the desktop, because running pictures over the corner where it shows, it does not show up. I also have run several programs to check for dead pixels, and it does not show up.

I know it is not a dead pixel because it shows up in a screenshot which I have included.

My video card is the Radeon 4670 1GB.

I have found a few threads online where people have the same problems but none of them really gave any soloutions.

I have found that if I terminate the wdm.exe (Windows Desktop Manager) process it disappears. However, that stops my window peeking from working.

Another thing, it does not appear right after I log in, maybe about 10 seconds after windows has loaded.

Any ideas?

Hi.

I have a problem with my computer that started about a month ago. The computer hadn't been used for about a month.

Most of the time, probably 19 out of 20 boots, my screen displays a black screen with a white underscore in the top left hand corner before i get to the BIOS. This is before any manufacturer logos appear. It is the usual flashing underscore which has obviously frozen.

I have re-seated all hard drives, my graphics card, removed all cables from my PSU and plugged them all back in again. Problem still existed.
I then unplugged all hard drives and tried to boot and the same problem happened again which rules out HDD failure.

It's going to be a problem with the PSU, graphics card or motherboard but i don't know which.
Before i start replacing parts, does anyone have any ideas on what it could be?

Like i said, it doesn't happen with every boot. Once the computer is on, it works perfectly. Putting the computer to sleep rather than shutting down has been working for a while which is how I've still been able to use the PC.

Hey guys, I've recently just built my own computer with the below specs:

Motherboard: ASUS P5QL-Pro
Graphics Card: Gigabyte 9600GT 1GB
Hard disk: Samsung 120GB (it's an old one I kept which I'm sure works fine)
CPU: Intel Q8200

OS: Vista Home Premium
Not overclocked whatsoever.

It appears that when I go out of my room for a few hours, when I get back, it shows a black screen with a white blinking underscore on the top left corner. It also appears almost everytime I turn on my PC. Pressing ALT-TAB-DEL will restart the PC, bringing it to the same black screen.

The only way I get in now is trying to boot it through the VISTA cd, and restart through there WITHOUT even changing any settings. Most of the time I'm lucky and I get in. VISTA says there's no error whatsoever when I click repair the PC and run the memory error detection thing (forgot the name).

Any help would be great as this is getting increasingly frustrating :-\

English is not my native language, but hopefully I can explain this well enough despite not knowing the technical terms.

I have been googling like crazy trying to figure out what this can be, but to no avail. It started after the Windows 10 anniversary update and it might be related to either chrome cast or spotify, as after resetting laptop to factory settings I did not see this problem again initially until I started using these again. However, when the white square pops up can be completely unrelated to using these, and uninstalling Spotify did nothing.

The white square isn't always visible either, but is still there as a large unclickable area. If I right-click on it, a menu comes up that says back forward and reload, but clicking these does nothing. The only way to get rid of it is to restart, but it will come up again pretty soon. Any ideas?

Hello,

A few days ago I made a clean wipe on my Toshiba laptop, and installed Windows 7 Home Premium x86 as my OS. After rebooting it showed the Toshiba screen with the F2, F12 options but after that it goes straight to a black screen with a white underscore. I pressed the power button to turn off then back on my computer and proceeded to press first F2 but it went back to the black screen with a white underscore, then restarted again pressing F12 went to the black screen again, restarted one more time pressing F8 for safe mode but nothing works. I've looked up on Google what to do, but couldn't find a defendant answer.

I hope someone can help me.

Today I started up my pc and after the BIOS screen (the place where you can press f8-f11 for various options) it went to a black screen with a blinking underscore in the upper left corner and stayed there indefinitely. It did this even after reboot.

I tried using the diagnostic tool and everything it tested passed (including HDD). I did this test twice and the same results were produced.

I also googled for similar problems (one topic mentioned that the op disassembling his computer and physically tapping a chip on the motherboard caused it to work) but I have no experience with taking apart my computer and i do not want to break it accidentally. I did however chance upon a topic advising him to do a CMOS reset which apparently helped that op, so i looked through the various options on the BIOS page. There was one option (f10 I think) mentioning CMOS on its fourth sub-window, so i pressed the reset option but I'm mot entirely sure if I used the right function.

I uninstalled kaspersky pure and replaced kaspersky pure for kaspersky anti-virus yesterday, dont know if this was the cause.

Hi,
Yesterday I was playing a computer game, when my pc suddenly shut down, so I restarted and tried again, and the same thing happened.
So I figured the PC might be overheating, I told my dad, who got rid of the dust inside the PC.
But after putting all the cables back into the pc, when we tried to restart the computer, all it did was show bios information (American Megatrends etc) After that the computer continues, but after it says "checking NVRAM... update OK!" it goes to a black screen with a white blinking underscore on the top right of the screen. I can't see any sign of windows whatsoever (I have windows Vista). I tried getting to the safe mode, which I read about after googling. But I can't enter safe mode, all I get is a screen saying "Please select boot device" and it shows 4 options: 3 "USB: Generic Flash" options and 1 "IDE:HL-DT-ST DVDRAM" option. But whichever one I choose, it just goes back to the black screen... I read about this on google too, and people said you should close this screen and keep pressing F8, but when I do, nothing happens, all I see is the black screen.
Does anyone know what to do to fix the problem?

I tried to use system recovery disks that I bout from eMachines but when I get to eMachines recovery management and run the factory restore it will get to the last point where it says ''updating system'' get to 21% then jumps to 100% says recovery is finished opens the CD tray, It dose not say whether or not to take the CD out so I have left the last CD in and taken it out when it gives me the ten second window telling me it will reboot. F11 dose nothing at all, most forms say to tap F11 to try starting it in safe mode but that dose not work. I removed the bios battery then put it back in, I've removed one RAM card at a time thinking one might be no good no difference or error message upon removing the RAM card(s). I've been told I might need a new Windows 7 Home Premium CD but I can't afford one, even if I could I would not buy one just save the money for a real computer such as a Dell. I have a functional HP laptop that uses Windows 7 Home Premium, is there a way to transfer files from that computer onto a flash drive then lode them onto my eMachine?

A:Black screen with white blinking underscore after eMachine logo.

So there are no error messages? Just a blank screen with a blinking cursor? The means the computer is looking for a disk to boot from and can't find one.
The fact that the repair disk didn't work indicates the problem could be the hard drive itself, and the problem will be hard to diagnose if you can't even get the computer to boot into safe mode. Transfering the files from another machine to the eMachine won't work.
In fact, you may have to do the opposite -- remove the hard drive, hook it up to another computer (an external hard drive dock with a USB connection is best for this), transfer over your important files, then place the hard drive back in the eMachine and try to reinstall the operating system. Then copy over the files from the other computer to your eMachine.

I have encountered the same problem as others in this forum. The base of my laptop has started to separate in the upper left hand corner next to the hinge. I can push it closed when the laptop is closed, but it separated again when I open the laptop. My laptop has never been dropped or damaged in any other way.

> My new protege has heating issue. upper left corner(power button area) is heating up pretty bad and doesn't cool down easy. Is this common for everyone, or is there anyway that i can reduce the heat?

I guess this is your first ?small? notebook which supports such big CPU/GPU performance. You will notice this on all small (~13?) notebooks. Why? Because the cooling modules are placed on the left and the whole warm air flows from this direction.
I?ve got U400 series. It?s 13? unit and the left area is warm too because of the cooling modules.

Furthermore the unit supports an overheating protection which means that the notebook would shut down automatically if the temperature is too high.
Does the notebook shut down automatically? No?
Well, in such case the temperature is ok and not too high.

Of course you can change the Win 7 power management settings in order to decrease the CPU and GPU performance which would lead to lower heat dissipation. This keep the temperature at lower level.

Ok so there's a really old thread about this already. But it didn't solve my problem. When I boot vista, a little white square appears in the upper left corner. It's not my wallpaper. On the old thread they have resolved the problem as being an ATI GPU Driver problem, and the update fixed it. But here's my problem, I don't have an ATI GPU.

When I right click the little white sqaure I can open up its properties, and in the properties it has a name of some website. Shortly after I even read it a "close program" window comes up. I click on close and the sqaure dissapears until the next time I boot.

Leaving the white square on just messes with whatever programs Im running. For example: If im watching a movie in full-screen, it will randomly just exit out of full screen. It doesnt do that once the white sqaure is off.

Well thanx for hearing out my problem, any help would be great.

For an unknown reason after every restart some icons will return to the starting position in the upper-left corner of the desktop (Windows7_64ult), even though I previously located elsewhere. I.e. they are listed below each other, according to updated. It is not happening to all icons, but that on the desktop since few days back. Others are on their position where were before. I hope it describe clearly. Some icons simply don't want to remain at the position where I moved them before. It sucks a bit, can be done something about it? Thanks for any advice

My laptop has an indintation in the upper left corner of the touchpad which normally may be double-tapped to disable/enable the touch pad itself, however, it has recently ceased working. I use it quite frequently as I write to avoid the complications of my palm on the touch pad as I type, however now I attempt to double tap this corner and it acts as if I am double tapping any other part and it is simply moving my cursor to wherever my mouse is hovering at the time and highlighting that portion of the writting. Essentially, it's acting as if this location on the touch pad is no more special than the direct center. However, the scroll bar I use on the right hand side of the touch pad is working perfectly, and the pinch-to-zoom feature is flawless. In attempting to find help on the issue, I only find people trying to figuer out why their touch pad is disabled because they don't know about the upper-left trick. This might, perhaps, be a problem with my computer itself as it is several years old, but I sincerely hope not. Any help at all is appreciated.

I have a Pentinum 2, 350 MHz computer running Win98SE. I have attempted to down load new video drivers or other programs and when I do I do not get the window that allows me to complete the download. Instead I get a little multi colored checkerboard in the upper left corner. How do I get rid of this so that I can complete my driver or program downloads ? It is getting very frustrating as I do not know what is causing this little checkerboard to appear instead of the expected program.

Any help to correct this problem would be appreciated.

Have you by any chance installed a downloading program like download express or download expert. I seem to remember that some of these programs do that sort of thing.

Background:
I have an excel screen with a couple of top rows frozen.
I scroll down the bottom section, row after row, using the regular excel scrollbar.
I do NOT select any cells.

Question:
I would like to display in one of the frozen top row cells the address (or contents) of the cell currently showing in the upper left hand corner of the non-frozen screen as I scroll along. Again, I am not stopping to highlight the cell (or any cell; just scrolling along).

So, for example, if I've scrolled down to row 102, I would like cell A1 to show "A102" (or its contents).

Vista, Excel 2007

Thanks

Hello there

So after installing and tweaking windows 8, some small annoyances remain. One of them that i encounter every day is as follows:
I have 2 monitors. Primary on the right, secondary on the left.
If i take my cursor up to the top left of the primary monitor, it gets "stuck" and will not move over to the left hand screen (secondary monitor). I believe this is caused by the APP bar which I have disabled as per (http://www.ghacks.net/2012/08/19/disable-windows-8-mouse-over-corner-interfaces/).
However the problem still remains. If i go aproximately 10 pixels down from the upper left hand corner, i can mouse over to the other screen fine. No menu comes up, my cursor just hits a wall. I have made sure both montior tops are in line in the screen resolution
screen.

I tried to shoot a video of it, but of course camstudio does not work in windows 8 (sigh).
steps to reproduce are, drag your mouse to the very top left corner with the intention of moving it to the second monitor.
How can i disable? I have tried the GPO setting for EdgeUI which creates the registry key ( DisableTLcorner) in the link above.

As a bit of background, if one is constantly using VNC to manage other peoples computers, I do not want to steal focus from their mouse by dragging my cursor over the centre of the screen. So i bring my mouse cursor to the very top (title bar area) and try
and move between screens. Obviously this is a windows 8 "feature". Anyone else a... Read more

A:Cannot mouse over upper left hand corner on dual monitors

Um no, I have never in my life found that installing a monitor driver ever fixed anything.

there is nothing in the application log that has anything to do with this problem as its a mouse event. No event is obviously generated when i am moving the mouse around the screen.

you cannot reproduce? I have installed a few more windows 8s and the problem exists on every single one.

here is a video of the event. Finaly got camstudio working properly, just have to do the whole screen. in the video, i try and move the mouse in the upper left and lower left of the screen. the two screens are different wallpapers to make it easier to see.
I have managed to find a service that allows uploads, the video file is here so you can see what im talking about. I hope that makes it clearer.

Hey guys I have a Song Vaio RBG-53 (I believe) with XP. I was using google images when I clicked on a picture and got a fake anti virus pop up. It wasn't the normal one I've seen quite a few times so I alt f4 closed it and immediately ran my AVG virus scan. That found nothing so I ran Malwarebytes which found 4 infected files. Two were in the registry and two were in my temporary internet files...I believe. Then I had it remove them and it said I needed to reboot to safely remove the files. I did that and when the computer started back up, it showed the initial Sony Vaio screen and then it goes straight into a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left corner. The fan in my computer will run pretty loudly for about a minute and then slow back downto normal. At this point I'm not able to do anything. None of the F keys do anything. I tried ctrl alt del and that has no effect either. I can't get into safe mode or recovery console or anything like that. I've been researching google for the last hour on this and all the fixes involve just going into safe mode or using a repair cd, which I do not have. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks.
