Lenovo G505 Wifi Problems - Limited Connection, No...

Q: Lenovo G505 Wifi Problems - Limited Connection, No...

Some forum members have reported a variety of Wifi issues with their G505 laptops. Their reports range from showing "Connection is limited", to Wifi connections dropping repeatedly, to being unable to make a Wifi connection at all. I combined multiple threads in order to assist forum members with troubleshooting solutions.

If your G505 was upgraded to Windows 8.0 or 8.1 and then lost connectivity, or you recently purchased a G505 running Windows 8.0 or 8.1 and are unable to connect, try following the instructions posted by Vikramsbox to restore the connection through the Lenovo Communications Utility.

For non-Windows 8.0 or 8.1 users, start troubleshooting with the basics:

The most recent WLAN, BIOS, and Power Management drivers from Lenovo can be downloaded here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-g-series-laptops/lenovo-g505-no...
It is also good practice to verify your Wifi is activated by following the instructions from Neokenchi.
Check Power Management settings to ensure your laptop isn't turning off the Wifi as noted by Dannyk1.
Check to see that Airplane Mode is set to OFF by following the instructions provided by Shiv_K.

After trying those steps, if you still experience a Wifi issue with your G505, other troubleshooting steps have been noted in this thread. This includes a whitelist of accepted replacement WLAN cards posted by Topmahof and a 3rd party driver which resolved wifi issues for Miila and Jessemck125. Please note that while Lenovo does not support 3rd part drivers, it may be an option to consider if your laptop is out of warranty and none of the suggestions in the thread resolve the issue.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Good afternoon all! I recently purchased a G505 from Best Buy. I have only run into one issue. My WiFi will go from connected to "Limited" connectivity about every 10 to 20 minutes. I can disconnect from the router and reconnect, and it will fix the issue temporarily. Connectivity is fine with all other devices and was fine with the previous laptop just a day before I purchased this one. Please advise. Thank you in advance.

For the past few months, my Lenovo G505 computer (running windows 8.1) has been telling me that its wifi connection is "limited". It used to work well on the wifi (same router) and I have restarted the router several times, but to no prevail. The wifi problem is only for my two private wifi connections, and the computer can work fine on any other wifi. I do not know how to fix this, or where to begin, and would prefer not changing my computer's os to something lower such as windows 8. Please comment if you know how I should fix this.

A:"Limited wifi" problem for Lenovo G505

Usually is a router that is causing the limited issue, not the computer.

My computer always gives me the warning sign that I have limited connection about every ten minutes. I then trouble shoot it with (what else) windows trouble shooter. It fixes it self saying "The default gateway is not available." With the "Fixed" sign to the right. Then 10 mins later its down again. This only happens when I am using the internet not when I'm editing a video or something.

A:Wifi problems connection drops to limited every 10 minutes

Is this on your home router/gateway, or on public hotspots.

What the hell is going on?

I have an Lenovo P500. Running 8.1. Intel N2230 wifi card

It does have a connection, every now and then it may drop but not really.

On the icon in the bottom right corner if I just hover the mouse over the wifi icon it is normal, name of connection and internet access. If I click the icon the purple box pops up on the right and it says The connection is limited.

I have tried rollback, installing an updated driver from Lenovo support, Disable bluetooth and a couple other.

Wifi works on every computer. Just this 8.1 it does not.

Whenever I restart the computer it forgets the password, I have to re enter the password every time even though I have connect automatically checked.

A few days ago I began getting the BSOD every time I would turn on my laptop. The error consistently being shown was KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (NETwbw02.sys). After several failed attempts to get the computer to turn on, I did a full restore, as there wasn't anything saved on the pc anyway. After the restore, I could turn it on, but continued to get the same error and BSOD every time I would try connecting to WiFi. I ran every windows update I could, and updated all drivers, including the Intel drivers for my wireless. The BSOD is now gone, but I can't connect to my network. I've tried using the router PIN and the network password, but neither works. I attempted to contact Toshiba Support, and they think it's an error with the registry, but want $100 to make sure. I can connect just fine with the Ethernet cable.
I can take screen shots or provide whatever information is needed. I've attached the info displayed from ipconfig /all from both Ethernet and wifi.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi gurus,

I'm having some problems suddenly with my wifi on my Windows 8.1 machine. This is a desktop PC with a small USB wifi-N adapter from TP-Link.
Every time I boot, it gets only a limited connection with my router. Simply disconnecting and reconnecting solves the issue.

The TCP/IP stack reset doesn't work. It gives me the "access denied" error. I have full permission over the netsh.exe (changed that already) and I run an elevated command prompt.

I have also already unmarked the "allow Windows to turn this device off" option, and also enabled the "allow download over metered connections" option.

This basically has me stranded ...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Ok. It helps to know if the problem connecting is on Public hotspots or private Wifi. Forget everything you see on Youtube and blogs. As for forums like this. Everything is going to be the same, when it comes to getting answers to your questions.

That means telling the whole story behind what mfg & model of computer, if it is a Private or Public hotspot, If private, what channel or channels is it set on.

Really cannot tell you anything more at this point, without the extra information needed. But really you are going to be better by troubleshooting on your end. That may mean even going with a USB adapter with an external antenna.

hi,

Since I installed Windows 7 on my PC I have this issue.
I use a WiFi USB key (D-Link DWL-G132 A3) to connect my computer to internet.

With Windows XP all were working good, but now with Windows 7 after 30/60/xxxx minutes I'm connected i get "limited access - no internet connection". Windows recognized a DNS error, but it was unable to slove it.
I'm solving this problem unplugging the WiFi key for 1 minute, and then re-plugging it. Doing this, the connection returns fine for another 30/60/90/xxxx minutes.

How can i solve this issue? (I'm actually trying the connection with IPv6 disabled and using only IPv4)

I suggest replacing the USB wifi device. It was discontinued in 2007 and has no support for Windows 7.

Hi

Hope you can help.

I'm on holiday and booked a villa which had complimentary WIFI. I'm able to connect to the unsecured public network. The signal strength is good and I know I'm connected as the duration of time keeps increasing.

However when I try and access the internet I get the message that I have Limited Connectivity. I run the diagnostic tool and am told there is an issue with the IP address.

Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this as I desperately need my laptop so I can work whilst on holiday.

Any help would be gratefully received.

A:Limited Connectivity on Wifi connection

You may need to remove wireless profiles (see below) and reconnect to the secure network - it will also mean at home when you return you will need to re-enter your wireless security key

would you post back an ipconfig /all

I assume the villa complimentary WIFI is secure - have you entered the correct KEY - and do you know the type of security used ?

If possible download and install and run this xirrus program - and tell us the Name of the villa wireless
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{ipconfig /all}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here
We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results here
-> Start
-> (XP - enter the following in the RUN box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all
-> (Vista or Windows 7 - enter the following in the Search box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all

A black box will appear on the screen -
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy

then reply here and
control key + V to paste
------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

You could try clicking the WIFI icon in the tray and running the troubleshooting option as a first attempt.
If this does not work try shutting down the router for a minute or so.
Maybe you already tried these, in which case someone more knowledgeable than me may have other solutions to offer.

Hi all.
I have a strange connection issue. My router (BT Home Hub 5) has two SSID's, one 2.4GHz and one 5GHz. I also have two WiFi extenders (Netgear N300) in the house, both of which are connected to the 2.4GHz SSID.

Up until a few days ago, my Win8.1 Pro laptop was comfortably connected to the 2.4GHz SSID and was solid for many months. Now, my laptop refuses to connect directly to that same SSID, but will connect quickly and easily to either of the Extenders.

When I attempt to connect to the problematic SSID (either by manually entering the security key or using WPS), it connects to the router, but states that the connection is limited (verified by no Internet connection). When I troubleshoot, the result is "WiFi doesn't have a valip IP configuration". The troubleshooter then supposedly fixes this error, but it in fact just connects to one of the extenders.

I've looked at the adapter (Broadcom 802.11n) settings and all seems to be as it should. DHCP is enabled and all other settings seem to be as they were previously.

I've tried turning off my firewall (Privatefirewall 7.0), anti-virus (AVG 2015 Free) and other security software (Peerblock 1.2 & SuperAntiSpyware 6.0.1200), then attempting to connect again, but the same connection issues happen so have to rule out any of those as the cause. Windows Firewall is disabled.

I want to use the problematic SSID as my extenders don't quite give me the same speeds as I was getting. Also, my laptop won't use the 5... Read more

Hello everyone, Since about five days ago, everytime I turn on my laptop, it starts normally. It goes into the black-background lenovo startup with a white loading symbol. Then, after maybe 5 rotations of the dots in the loading symbol, it freezes. It does not progress into starting up. At this point, I usually turn off my laptop by holding the power button. If I don't turn it off myself, it turns off automatically a few minutes later.  Every 2 or 3 times I turn on my computer, instead of the loading symbol, it turns into a "Preparing Automatic Repair" mode. I have seen the loading symbol for this mode but then it disappears and nothing happens and it turns off automatically after ten minutes or so. I've seen the same solution that help others with the same problem which is to take out the DVD from the laptop. Hi:

I recently bought a Dell XPS 15 that runs Windows 8.1.

Right from the start I've had a problem connecting to the internet. The machine can usually find my home Wif, but when it tries to connect it usually says 'Limited' connectivity and I can't access the internet. I can however access my home network (for instance, I can stream music from the computer to a Sonos player). To connect to the internet I need to flick either the (electronic) airplane or wifi switch off and on a number of times. Once connected, it works fine and doesn't loose the connection unless it goes to sleep or I turn it off.

Also, sometimes when I turn on the machine it can't see any networks at all. Then I need to restart it before doing the above.

Googling shows this has been a problem for lots of people running 8.1 in combination (but probably not always) with the Intel 7620 wifi card on various brands of machine. There's a number of fixes suggested which I've tried (like those listed here: How to fix limited or no connectivity Wi-Fi issues in Windows 8 - fixedByVonnie ) but none have solved the problem.

I have installed the most recent driver for the Intel card (and am not running the Microsoft driver).

I've spoken to Dell who have run me through the above fixes as well as this:Search>device manager>network adaptors> right click: Intel?>properties>advanced>Ad hoc channel : change from 1 to 11. The next thing they want me to do is wipe everything and restore th... Read more

Plug it in via ethernet cable to your router or modem, enable Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware (Step 3) and watch for driver to be installed in bottom-right System Tray. If it does, run all rounds of Important and Optional Windows Updates which should deliver your other drivers including wireless.

If not in Device Manager click on Network driver for wireless, on Driver tab have it Update Automatically.

If that fails import the Wireless driver from the Support Downloads webpage for your model PC using the Serial Number or model number, choosing Wifi or Wireless LAN and the bit version. Download the isntaller, unzip, rightclick on Setup to run, or browse into the driver folder from Device Manager>Network driver>Update driver>Browse.

Other scenario, I tried to connect it to LAN again and same thing happen that it connected to wifi, but that time my wifi stays to be connected as long as I stay right beside my router but eventually it drops. Same things happen when I did it again. I tried to move a lil' bit far to my router, my wifi signal is Full or strong but it goes LIMITED. Hi everyone,

I have recently switched my work laptop from Win XP to Win 7 and have started encountering a weird WiFi issue.

When I turn the laptop on in the morning it auto connects to my home WiFi without any problem, but indicates that there is limited access and I can't use anything requiring internet.

So my first reaction was to disconnect/reconnect and guess what? It worked.

Now every single day I have to do the same manual disconnect/reconnect, which is getting old fast

I tried troubleshooting this issue and here are some conclusion I reached based on my testing:
- No such issue encountered with any Win XP machine
- No such issue encountered with any Ubuntu machine (12.04)
- Exact same issue encountered on my girlfriend's laptop (also on Win 7)
- My work laptop uses a VPN to access the company's network, but I manually launch it after the internet is connected, so it cannot have an impact on the initial WiFi connection

I have attached the result of ipconfig /all if it can help, but at this point I'm stuck.

Would anyone have any suggestion?

I assume you don?t know that Win 8 is past and outdated. The new Win 8.1 has been published by Microsoft some month ago and you could upgrade the Win 8 to Win 8.1 free of charge.

For that I would recommend you to follow the Toshiba step by step instruction
[How to Update from Windows 8 to Windows 8.|http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-upgrade-stepbystep/]

Regarding the Wlan.
I think the Win 8.1 upgrade would fix your issue but I think you should also fix it by new Wlan driver installation

i bought this Lenovo G505 about a year and a half ago and for the most part i love it, it does everything i need it to do within reason. but i have had one nagging problem with it the whole time and up until today i blamed it on different size sticks and memory speeds, but today I bought brand new corsair select DDR3L 1600mhz memory 2x8gb (16gb). sadly the problem still exists.it seems that no matter what stick of ram is in the second slot, that while the bios recognizes the total, and windows claims to recognize the total, the second stick is not USABLE memory. please view the photo to see exactly what i am referring to. I have tried a multitude of different operating systems (win 7,8,8.1,10, countless linux distros) all give me the same problem. I would REALLY like to know how to fix this problem as currently having 16gb of memory and only 7.45 usable is heartbreaking...

A:Lenovo G505 RAM Confusion

Hi  3razar3,Can you check if windows is using the half of the memory as hardware reserve? To check this open up Resource Monitor from Taskmanager. If you see that your missing memory is being reserved  for hardware do the following steps. Open msconfig - > click on Boot - > Advanced options - > untick maximum memory, restart the system. Hope this helps. Cheers,

Here is our problem, and solution, I hope it helps some of you!

PROBLEM: We got a new router, BT Smart Hub (upgraded from a BT Home Hub), and my Dad's computer a Lenova G505 suddeny would not connect to the internet. All other devices connected fine. His laptop got a 5 bar signal to the 2.4ghz network but when opening an internet page, it would not work. It did not pick up the 5ghz network at all, all oher devices did.

SOLUTION: Firstly we updated the drivers from the Lenovo website to ensure we were all up to date. This did not fix the problem, however I still feel it is an important first step.

As the laptp was not picking up the 5ghz network at all (it is the same wireless network name but followed by -5 and other machines were) we thought this may be part of the problem. We found out via Google that to support 5ghz, his broadband capabilities would beed to show the letters A / AC.

To check his broadband capability we did the following: opened Device management, went to Network Adaptors, clicked on Boradcom, went to properties, clicked on advanced. The advanced section showed a long list, we found Broadband Capailities on the list, and were shown a code that contained the letters B / N. This means that his machine does not support dual band conection, so that is why the 5ghz was not showing up!

We thought perhaps because his machine does not support dual band, and we have two networks running, this may be why the in... Read more

Hi there, My Lenovo G505 is not booting anymore. I had wanted to scan my laptop with Kaspersky Rescue CD, and therefore, I wanted the laptop to boot from the CD. So, I searched for how to boot the laptop from CD, and I followed the solution provided in this thread by Solid_Cruver: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Z500-BIOS-legacy-support/m-p/1124815/hig... As written in that post, I first booted to BIOS Setup, then under Exit, I changed the "OS Optimized Defaults" to "Other OS". I then hit F9 to load defaults. Then, under BIOS, I changed to Legacy boot and Legacy first... both options that are shown one below the other. After that I saved the BIOS setup and exited. After that when the laptop boots, it just keeps showing Lenovo on the screen, and under that the dotted circle keeps on spinning, and nothing else happens. After waiting for a while, I turned power off by pressing the power off button for a while. Then, I pressed the Nova button, but no display comes up, but the light for power remains on. Again, nothing happened there too. Just a black screen, even no blinking cursor, or any kind of display. After waiting a while, I pressed the power button, and laptop powered off. How do I get to the Nova screen, or get the computer to boot? Or, how to just set the BIOS setup again to what it was before? This isn't my laptop, but of my friend, and I don't want it to go bad :/. A:Lenovo G505 unable to boot

OK, I tried again after power off on the Lenovo screen. I then pressed the Nova screen, and this time, the display was there (phew), and I got the options for the Nova screen. I went into BIOS, and I changed the options for "OS Optimized Defaults" to "Win8 64-bit", and in BIOS, changed to UEFI. I saved the settings, and exited. But still, the computer is not able to boot. It again shows the screen with Lenovo written and the dotted circle keeps spinning. What else do I have to do to get the laptop to boot normally from the OS? Under the BIOS settings, I noted that Secure Boot was Enabled, but the Secure Boot Status was Disabled. The laptop isnt booting because of this setting? How do I get the Secure Boot Status to Enabled, and how do I get the computer to boot normally from the OS on the HDD?

I have three Lenovo g505 laptops, all running Windows 8.1 (originally factory loaded with Windows 8.0). One for me, one for my son and one for my daughter. My son's HDD crashed unexpectedly. He didn't have any critical data on his computer, I chose to create a Recovery USB (w/ partitions) from my daughters computer and do a "fresh start" on his computer. Part 1When I tried to use the Recovery USB on my son's computer, the system could see the USB drive in terms of Start Up order, but it could not find the USB drive to obtain the recovery/partition data. The system prompted me to search for the Recovery data, but it did not give me the USB drive as an option. Below are the current BIOS settings on my son's computer: BIOS Version: 82CN15WW(v1.02)Windows License:  WIN8 STD MLT CONFIGURATIONWireless                                EnabledSATA Controller Mode          AHCIPower Beep                          DisabledSVM suppoertr                      DisabledBIOS Back Flash          ... A:Can't Recover from HDD Crash on Lenovo g505

Hi david28116,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Please set these parameters inside BIOS

Exit Tab:
OS Optimized Defaults = Win7 OS or Other OS

When finished, hit Load default settings (just right above it) then set these additional settings:

Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled

Boot Tab:
Boot Mode = Legacy
Boot Priority = Legacy First
USB Boot = Enabled

Now Press F10 to save and exit

Now Insert your USB, Turn the computer OFF.
Turn it back on and start tapping F12
You should now have your USB as an option.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

Hi, I have G505 59379534 with 8.1 64 bit OS. It is out of warranty. Till a few months, DVD drive was working allright. A:Lenovo G505 DVD drive not working

Hi Arm-1969,

Welcome to the Forums

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue the DVD not working in your Lenovo G505 laptop.

Check with bootable DVD, does the DVD is detected in BIOS?

To resolve this issue, remove the affected filter drivers.

To do this, click on Start,  type regedit in the search box, then click on regedit in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, key in your password or click continue.

Locate, and then click the following registry subkey: hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\class\{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

Note that there could be several instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in the above step so make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the upperfilters and the lowerfilters values.

To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the default data value is
DVD/ CD-Rom and the class data value is CDrom.
In the right panel, right-click upperfilters , and then click delete . Click yes to confirm the removal of the upperfilters registry entry. In the right panel, right-click lowerfilters , and then click delete . Click Yes to confirm the removal of the lowerfilters registry entry... Read more

It never stops running. Is there a fix for this? And does anyone know how much roughly the cost of fixing this is and if its worth it?Thanks!
