T580 - some questions

Q: T580 - some questions

Hello,I'm interested in buying a T580 thinkpad and got some questions: 1. does the 4K display consumes more battery power than the FHD display? 2. for those customers with 4k display - are you satisfied with that choice? (are the fonts readable)2. in reality, how long does the battery last with standard use? (with all types of rear batteries)?3. how is your overall impression of this model? Thanks, Johnny

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone, basically I have the same problem as previously mentioned in other threads, but the solution providied, isn?t applicable for my case. The fan turns on if  you?re only webbrowsing or doing some editing work in word, which obviously shouldn?t be the case.I run Win10 Pro. All updates and drivers seem up to date, at least Win10 says so.How do I check if it?s really the case? BIOS is 1.09. Setting the battery plan doesn?t have an effect. Coming from a reddit post, ist was suggested, that I should ask @someotherguy if a solution he proposed for other models, also works for T580. Everything is explained in the following reddit  thread. http://reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/8f24ki/t580_fan_turning_on_cpu_10/dy1cw9u Help would be greatly appreciated. I'm about to order a T580 today and I see there is a choice of "6cell Battery 48Wh Rear" and "3cell Battery 24Wh Rear". Does anyone own the 48Wh battery for the T580 (or T570) so that they can confirm if the 48Wh batter sticks out at all? I want a battery that does not raise the laptop. Also where can I buy a second (spare) battery that is exactly the same as the "6cell Battery 48Wh Rear" and "3cell Battery 24Wh Rear"? Thanks in advance. Hello everyone,I'm planning to buy my first Thinkpad, probably a 8th gen Intel processor one. I read this on the T580 specifications sheet : "System has one HDD slot or one M.2 2280 slot exclusively for storage" but that doesn't seem clear to me.I found here someone else who as the exact same, unfortunately unanswered, question :System has one HDD slot or one M.2 2280 slot exclusively for storage. Why I cannot use it with dual drive setup. One fast but low capacity PCIe NVMe ssd on the M.2 slot and another high capacity hard drive on the regular 2.5" HDD bay. Why one or another but not both? I couldn't find a simple and clear answer to that question

Please advise if Lenovo can deliver T580 with preinstalled Windows 7 Professional as out of box delivery so save several tinkering hours at user's garage. It had been tremendous performance issues with T570 with Windows 10 resource hog experience. I would not prefer to run Windows 10 again on T580 - high performance machine hogged by Windows 10. If Lenovo could pre-install downgrade option out of the box that would save several hours of research by end users, T580 with Windows 7 would perform more stable and solid provided if they have enabled all the drivers to function properly.  This has been hugely frustrating experiencing to deal with T570 machine running Windows-10 Pro, I had to dump the machine. I dont have much confidence to run T580 on windows 10 pro, it would not even match T520 machine ( 7 years old machine) running on Windows -10. Looking forward for the solution, request Lenovo team to enable Downgrade option as part of the customization to save users's time and stable user experience. If Lenovo Does not deliver out of the box, first thing to do after the machine is to wipe out Windows 10 to install, Please let us know if the drivers available or I would be placing a ticket to go through 100 steps to get it done.  Thank you,Mamba.

Hey folks,I just purchased a T580 from Lenovo.com this month. I received it and upon opening immediately noticed a continuous sharp edge all along the three sides of the keyboard/computer part of the laptop. The screen is fine, this is only along the edges of the base portion, and not including the back edge where the screen hinges.  The textured surface on top of the base seems to have a sharp, possibly unfinished edge. I have spoken with the support line and haven?t gotten far.  I would like to compare my laptop to a T580 in store but cannot find one.   Its hard to photograph but I think I?ve captured it here just above the fan openings. If you zoom you can see the light from what I call a sharp edge. The fact that there is a change in angle at all in thus location leads me to believe it is a production oversight. I do believe I could whip this unit into shape with an emory board, but why settle for a less than excellent product.  So my question to the forums is, can anyone attest to this being the normal fit and finish for these T580?s?  Is this a problem or is this the expectation. Has anyone else experienced this issue?Zoom to the center of the picture and you can see the sharp edge along the bottom edge of the top piece of material

T580 (fresh from factory).  Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 driver (12/27/2017 - 23.20.16.4905).  Intel Core i7 vPro 8th Gen.  Windows 10 64 bit (freshly updated).  Lenovo Vantage system update freshly updated.  (today's date: 4/28/2018) LG display plugged into HDMI port on Thunderbolt adapter which is plugged into the USB-C port on left side.HP display plugged into HDMI port on right side. Either display is detected just fine if I unplug the other one; but when both are present, it only detects one of them. This exact configuration was working fine on my T470, Intel Core i5, vPro, 7th Gen. So, bigger and better (and more $$) is worse. My bet would be on a driver issue.  (Windows won't let me install the Intel April 2018 driver - it says probably because the manufacturer did custom driver coding.)

A:T580 Won't detect a second external monitor

UPDATE: Well, ok, it DOES appear to TRY to "detect" the display when I first plug it in.  But it has no properties (e.g., Resolution) and the #3 icon on the layout panel soon disappears and clicking the Detect button won't bring it back (unless I unplug my other monitor - then it detects fine and works fine).

Hello Everyone, I'm looking to buy my first ThinkPad but Lenovo segmentation is a bit confusing. I understand T is midrange model and E is entry level.  But both models could be customised with the same specs, 15inch 1920x1080p, i5 8250u, 8gb (4x2) ram, 128 ssd. However, there is 300 ($USD 420) price difference? Both laptops look identically. Is it worth paying extra for T model?  Unfortunately, there is very little info available online. Please shed some light. Thank you.

Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum as I just bought a nice T580 with i7 8550U Intel CPU. So far the machine is amazing, it's my first Lenovo (I'm coming from a MS Surface Pro 3) and I'm happy with it, except for one thing: When AC is plugged on, the CPU clock always goes to max speed (3.8-4.0GHz), even if the load is at 0%. That means that the laptot heats more and the fan kicks in very fast if you start to do something, even if it's only web browsing. That's really annoying.Everything goes back to normal if I unplug AC and work on battery. The CPU immediately lowers the clock, as you can see on my screens. Here are all the tricks I already tried: - Changing power modes by clicking on the battery icon on the desktop. This doesn't do anything when AC is plugged. But this works perfectly if I unplug it.- Resetting the BIOS. No changes.- Changing BIOS AC power settings with the same values as for battery power settings. No changes on Windows 10, still at 100% clock speed.- Restoring Windows 10. 2 times. Still no changes. I even used the Lenovo recovery tool to factory reset it. It's not a software problem as this happens already after the very first startup of Windows 10.- Downgrade the BIOS to rev. 1.06. No changes. I'm currently using the latest 1.09. I don't know what to do now. I asked some people on Reddit and they don't seem to have the problem. HI, Everyone     I just bought my first T580 and got a Transcend MTS-400 128GB M.2 2242 ssd to do a custom upgrade my self. After carefuly watch the Lenovo tutorial video on Youtube, I installed the ssd on the 2nd PCIe slot. After boot into the  Bios, the Bios couldn't detect the new ssd. Updated the Bios to the newest version and still no luck. So I spend some time searching online and found the following post: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T470-unable-to-detect-M-2-SSD-2242-after... It looks like some compatibility issue with certain brand of m.2 2242 SSD. I wonder if that's the case for my new T580? Does Lenovo ever comes out with a list of m.2 ssd that their Thinkpad is compatible with?

I have a ThinkPad T580 with the Ultra Dock (40AJ0135US) and I'm wanting to use two external 4k monitors. I found this post (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/How-many-DisplayPorts-are-available-on-t...) that seems to indicate that this cannot be done, but it doesn't make sense since the dock utilizes two USB-C connections from the T580. Can a DP and USB-C on the dock be used for two 4k monitors? Is there any combination of ports that would allow the dock to support two 4ks? Will Lenovo be releasing a monitor compatibility matrix soon for their new laptop lineup, like this one: https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/solutions/pd029622#USB-C%20dock ? I appreciate any help!

I currently have T580 with pre-installed WWAN module (Fibocom L850-GL) and trying to get to work it on Linux. It works perfectly fine on Windows. So far I discovered that Windows driver uses PCIe protocol to communicate with WWAN module, but Linux is supported apparently only through USB protocol, and if PCIe is enabled, the module ignores all USB commands according to its hardware specs document (page 26) - https://www.mev-elektronik.com/files/MEV%20Elektronik%20Service/produkt-downloads/rf-microwave-wirel... Fibocom recommendation is to disable PCIe in BIOS, that is not supported by stock ThinkPad. Thus in Linux the device is only displayed as "Wireless controller: [0d40]: Intel Corporation Device 7360 (rev 01)" through lspci , and nothing on lsusb . Any suggestions how to make it work on Linux? As an alternative I'm considering getting another WWAN module, but it's quite likely it will not work due to whitelists. The only other module that is whitelisted for sure is L830-EB, that does not have global coverage and thus doesn't work in the US or China, even so it was reported that it's Linux-compatible (USB-mode only). Maybe there is a patched BIOS that has whitelists removed? Wondering if there are Linux enthusiasts who are also looking for a way of using WWAN.

Hi  I'm thinking to get T580 with i5-8250U and then maybe upgrade CPU later if I need it and it gets cheaper. Is it possible?I didn't find CPU on the user replacable units list in the manual but I also read that it is possible for some older Txxx. Also - what is your opinion about FHD IPS display in T580? Did it improve compared to previous models (colors, brigtness etc)?  And the last piece - if I order it without WWAN - can I then add the card later or I will still be missing antennas or something else? I would expect to have no issues but I read different opinions on the net. Thanks a lot in advance  Hermez

Hello, There's a bug in the ACPI tables that affects all of the machines listed in the title. The bug causes heavy CPU usage on one thread due to frequent ACPI interrupts. The symptoms are a slow system, and high CPU temperatures (idles around 65 degrees Celsius). Some operating systems may mitigate the symptoms, but the bug is present regardless. The following circumstances trigger it:-powering on the laptop-waking from suspend (and possibly hibernate - untested) The following actions prevent it:-reboot the laptop (temporary fix)-disable thunderbolt in the UEFI settings (permanent fix - with latest UEFI updates) The official UEFI update changelogs for all of these machines make explicit mention of this issue: "-(Fix) Fix an issue where system may become hot by system interrupts when Thundrebolt is disabled in ThinkPad Setup - Security - I/O Port Access." Unfortunately, the bug was not actually fixed. The solution that was implemented is only a bandage for the "disabled" thunderbolt state. This patch should resolve the problem. This patch would then remove the bandage of the official fix, since it should no longer be necessary. I will leave that for your engineers to decide. These patches were made for the T480s, but should apply equally to all affected machines.

Same issue.  The laptop detects only ONE monitor at a time. If I plug them both in to the displayport adapter, one of them will work, the other will say it's not connected. If I unplug the monitor that is on, the previously undetected monitor will immediately be detected and turn on.  If I plug the undetected monitor into the HDMI slot it will detect and output.  This bug deserves more attention than it is currently receiving. It should be pinned in every forum with an affected machine, so that the owners of those machines are aware that it exists. It is currently squirreled away in the T series forum, under the outdated title "T480s - ACPI bug". I have asked that the thread title be updated and received no response. I have to presume that Lenovo did not see my request (in which case, they'll see it now). It would also be nice to get some kind of status update. For example, I am still waiting for confirmation that the patches from the newer thread were sent to engineering (see this message).

1. Ran out of this space in my Q:Lenvovo - backup assigned partition.  14GB.  (My C: drive has 80GB free!) How can I fix this?  Is there a way to expand the partition without deleting it first?  Does Lenvovo or Microsoft or SSD manufacturer have a tool to do this where you just enter the amount you want to expand a partition to and it will adjust the other partition accordingly?  If not; I cannot delete the Q:Lenovo drive using file explorer or disk cleanup utility.  How do I remove at the original backup?  When I go to disk cleanup it shows blank the files; so it is a hidden file or subdirectory.  I even try signing on as System Administratin but forgot the password I created, it been so long ago and never use it.  LOL!   If I cannot do any of this:  There is an option to do a Windows 10 refresh but can you redirect it to a new SSD from the existing SSD? 2. when I got it back it is still pointing to a bizarre path..?? (which is one of the reasons I wanted to start fresh. It points to:

%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files (x86)\CyberLink\Power2Go;%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\

PATHEXT
.COM;.EXE;.BAT;.CMD;.VBS;.VBE;.JS;.JSE;.WSF;.WSH;.MSC

why would this be the case? When I got it back I see that some things like my extra monitor was already installed.. (Before I even hooked it up??) and some folders I had renamed example folder.OLD was still here. (and many other things that lead me to believe it did not get formatted correctly. (and could still have virus?)
He used my factory disks. (which I do have)
can anyone advise me on what is going on?
thanks so much!!

A:Environment Variables questions and format questions

I've had a bunch of HP machines. But I never used the restore. I'm not sure if it formats or just installs over what's there. It may leave files and folders that are in subfolders of programs that come bundled with the machine assuming it's data or something. The path looks fine to me. That %SystemRoot% stuff is just a way to use environment variables in case the system is not installed on C:\Windows.

If you really just want the OS and not the bundled software see the threads about ISO download for Vista. You can evaluate for 90 days perfectly legally. There are also tutorials how to extend the evaluation by 30 days.

Hello,

Brand new user.

a. The new PC came with McAfee anti virus.
Should I use it ?

Is it as good as AVG, e.g., which I used on my old W7 PC ? Use them both ?

b. And, how do I turn on the "Defender" anti virus which I understand is part of
the W10 package ?

Would it interfere with McAfee or AVG ? How good is it ?

c. How do I turn on the Firewall; I'm assuming there is one like in W7 ?

Much thanks,
Bob

A:New W10 User Questions (Basic Questions, Please)

McAfee, AVG and Defender are all anti-virus programs and you should only run one. In fact Defender will get turned off when another one is installed.

Right click the Start button and select Control Panel.

Then select Security and Maintenance and under Security it will show your the status of the Firewall, Virus and Spyware and which program is running what.

Control panel also has links to Defender and Firewall.

That McAfee is a trial version and at some point you will have to buy it.

Hey guys, you might of seen a post or two about me not able to get our domain to use GPO's, but its all fixed now. YAY !
(It was the DNS, incase anyone was interested)

but now i got a few questions, i'll start with:

1. Is there anyway to configure a client by just having them log onto the domain? e.g. Disable Security Center, Windows Messanger, Add a Registry hack. etc.

2. Is there anyway to view a list of all websites visited on the network with information, eg. Who was looking at it(which user), at what time. etc

3. Is there a way to record a list of all objects printed from our print server with information? e.g. User that printed it, time it was printed, how many pages, how many copys. etc.

4. Is there a way to delete start menu files/folders with a logon script?

5. I'm going to put "Deep Freeze" on the computers that are accessed and used by the public, but i've never used it, nor have any experience with it.
Does it cause any problems with normal operation of the computer? if anyone could give me some feedback on this, i'd love to hear it.

Also, is it possible to get more then just 6 Virtual Drives on a computer?

i mean, isn't there 23 possible drives?

I have a Packard Bell P133, model D135. Eight megs of
RAM are on the motherboard. According to a search of
this model on a 'Memory' website, this model has FPM non-
parity memory. The machine had two 4-MB modules installed
when it was new in 1996, for a total of 16 MB at time of purchase.
Since then, I have added two 8MB modules to bring it up to
32MB. Two weeks ago, I replaced the two 4MB modules with
two 32MB FPM modules, which was supposed to bring it up to a total of 88MB. When I boot up, it only reads slightly over 81MB as passed....of course, on the System Properties 'General' tab, 80MB is listed. Can anyone tell me what might have happened to the other 8MB?

Another question: Would parity memory be compatible with
non-parity memory? I know from research, that most servers use parity memory...parity being described as a feature of
a module for error-checking. Would parity memory work OK with non-parity, but not the other way around? The reason I ask is, I have an opportunity to buy some used 72-pin, FMP parity modules at a good price, and I just wanted to know if the two (parity and non-parity) would mesh. I wanted to bring it up to the max for this model....136MB, providing the 8MB on-board memory is read. That was my own theory about the missing 8MB....that the on-board memory, for some reason isn't being read. Any thoughts on this?

Hey guys, just have a few questions in regards to Vista x32 vs x64 as well as Direct x10 issues when it comes to gaming.

First off - What benefits do I get by running Vista x64 as opposed to x32 when it comes to gaming. I bought Call of Duty 4 as well as Bioshock, and will be buying some of the new games coming out such as Assassin's Creed and Far Cry 2. Are any of these games 64 bit games?

Second off - Do I get any benefit playing a game made for DirectX 9 on a DirectX10 platform? Or are the graphic increases only visible in games actually made for DirectX 10? Again, are any of the games I listed above made to work with better graphics in DirectX 10?

Thanks guys!

A:32/64 bit questions & DirectX 9/10 questions :)

I discovered your inquiry while I was attempting to answer questions similar to yours.

This isn't much help but try reading about Epic Game's 'Unreal' game engine. I'm reading the article on wikipeadia about this game engine. This is the game engine used for Gears of War and Unreal Tournament.

Any way, it seems that if your running the game in a 64-bit environment like Windows Vista 64 the game will be in 64-bit mode.

It uses Directx 10 and Directx 10 also seems to be in 64-bit mode depending on weather Windows is in 64-bit mode.

In related news, it seems that the 'Unreal' game engine and the 'Source' game engine (Used for Half life 2, etc) are optimized to take advantage of multi-threading or in other words optimized for multi-core processors.

Anyway, see what conclusions you come to...I'll post an update as I learn more.

Cleaned the infected files.. and said yes to registry cleaning as well. And also "Delete trusted zone" What is it btw? This tool fixed it! But when i restarted back to normal mode. A:Few Questions And Hjt Log!

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. And also "Delete trusted zone" What is it btw? This is a list of websites that will load on Internet Explorer with minimum security settings. If you have a malicious site listed in your trusted zone it will be able to load all kinds of trouble onto your computer. But when i restarted back to normal mode. My wallpaper was removed and it had plain blue wallpaper. Though i changed back. But does that mean i deleted some necessary files or what? Not at all. The smitfraud virus can also change your desktop wallpaper, so the tool fixes that as well.Unfortunately you have some additional issues that show up in your log. We'll use another tool to help get rid of them. Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts. When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

1) Is Firefox generally considered to be better than IE?
2) If I decide to switch over to Firefox, is there a REALLY simple way to move my IE bookmarks there?

A:2 Questions

I would say FF is different than IE7. Better maybe in that it is so customizable with extensions but on the same hand one has to be careful not to go nuts and turn FF into a big ponderous pig. FF3 is getting high marks so far, apparently having corrected a lot of the problems there were with FF2.

In FF2 and presumably in FF3, its as simple as File>>Import>>Internet Explorer settings and bookmarks.

Hello, I have a reason to believe I could possibly be infected by a RAT or some other virus by someone I play an online game with. I think it may have been a java drive by or trough skype as an image file.

1. Could working youtube links as in they sent me links to watch a few videos off youtube that actually went to the site and worked give me a RAT from them? Maybe infected my browser? I know this sounds a bit silly so maybe not?

2. They sent me an image file they was downloaded to my computer. It wasn't an .exe file but an actual image could they have hidden a RAT in it somehow?

3 Or could they possibly have done something as we connected during the call? IP address?

4. I would like to just do a system restore on my computer. Can a RAT attach itself to the files i would like to save. Family photos, videos, game saves, music ont my ext. hd. I just don't want to infect another computer or my computer after I do a system restore.

These probably seem like very ignorant questions but I am concerned.

A:Possible RAT, some questions

Hi and some good advice for a RAT Remote Access Trojan (infected computer )........

I don't believe you fully understand the scope of having a RAT:
A backdoor severely compromises system integrity.
A compromised system may allow illicit network connections, disabling of security software, modifying critical system files and collection and transmiission of personal identifiable information without your consent.

I recommend that you disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately, and only reconnect to download any tools that are required.
NOTE : If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or it if it contains any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Mod Edit:  Split from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/575399/mse-shows-status-potentially-unprotected/ - Hamluis.

I found a thread in Spybot Search and Destroy that helps you to identify which items are unprotected.  For me it relates to Opera, which you stated that you did not have.  I added Opera just a few days ago, so to my surprise when I ran Spybot today, for the first time, I was unable to protect all of my items.

Go to the following web address: https://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?70530-Immunization-NOT-complete-193-still-unprotected

To identify the unprotected items, after running Immunization, in the lower right hand corner, select Show Details, and it shows which items are Unprocessed, Unprotected, Protected, and Total.  Again, for me, mine showed Opera 7+ as 193 Cookies Unprotected.  I tried the steps mentioned on this web page but still no success.  If and when I find a solution, I will report it here.

I am also using the free versions of: Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit; Malwarebytes Anti-Malware; SpywareBlaster; SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition and Windows Defender.  I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and have not had any issues with it.

One more thing, should you upgrade to Windows 10, Spybot will want to upgrade to version 2.5.  If you use only Windows Defender as your Anti-Virus, you need to disable an item in Spybot or else your Windows Defender will stop working - Sel... Read more

A:DAW questions.

I had to google because I had no idea what DAW and VST were.

For those that might not know, I found this
DAW is Digital Audio Workstation. VST is Virtual Studio Technology.
So Cubase, FL, Live, Reason, etc.. are DAW's.
VST's are plug ins. So like Trilogy, Massive, etc.. are VST'sClick to expand...

Hi All....

Had a friend who got a call from her cable modem provider. The ISP told her she had a virus and disconnected her service because they said it was "causing problems with the network". THere were many errors on the line they said. I've been doing networking for awhile now, but not for the last couple years. This troubles me in a couple ways and wanted to get your input. My questions are:

1. How in the world can an ISP know u have a virus on your computer or even care?? Unless they have it on their network and sent it to you.

2. Since viruses operate at a different OSI layer than your cable modem and communication line how can viruses cause errors on the line??

I pretty much told this friend that the ISP support person that called her was wacked. I would like ur expertise on the matter.
Sorry, a couple things to add. The cable company support person even told her the exact virus she had(kaiten). i did some research on here and and it looked like most poeple like AVG software, so i had her download it and scan her drives. No Luck. I then had her run housecall. Housecall found 22 viruses. So i'm a little puzzled.

Only been out of the business a couple years, hope things havent changed that much.

Thanks as always,
Paul
