Preferred Solution: Which Thinkpad T series (supports Linux) [to buy] ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In that case, the best choice would be Lenovo ThinkPad T480.

I have a Thinkpad T430 type 23474W4 and a Thinkpad mini dock series 3 type 4338-15U. I already have a Lenovo LEN LS2223wC monitor hooked up to it through one of the DVI ports. I have a a Lenovo LT1952p Monitor that I would like to use as a second external monitor. Both monitors work individually through either DVI or VGA. However, I can't get them to both work at the same time no matter what configuration I use. I was told they didn't have to be identical monitors to work together. What am I doing wrong?

When I dock the computer and press the power button on the dock it doesn't recognize my monitor as the main screen. I have to hit a key (Windows 10) and put in my password hoping that it's doing that and then the screen comes up. If I reboot after that ... THEN.... it recognizes my screen as the main monitor. How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2½" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2½" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

Hi guys, I'm a Thinkpad user using X230 now. I'm thinking of upgrade my notebook recently and trying to survey on the new thinkpads. I use Win7 32 bit version a lot on work, some programs and files are only available on it, even win7 64bit won't work. So I search on the net and find out that some people said it's X260 and others said X270 has 6th generation Intel CPU supports Win7 too(Not sure if it includes 32 bit version? Or only 64bit version?) I'm planning using both Win7 32 bit and Win10 64bit on my new Thinkpad at same SSD. Is there any possible conflict I shoud be aware of? Thank you for all the suggests guys.

A:What's the latest Thinkpad model that officially supports Win7 32Bit version?

I have never run it myself.  I looked at the parts list for the X270 with 6th gen CPU and it lists recovery media for win7 32-bit'
https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/x270_20k5_20k6_20180305.pdf

I wouldn't expect a conflict if I ran win 10 64 in a separate partition

Hi everybody!I have to buy a new notebook. Have you experience about running linux in the new spectre x360 ac-0xx series? What I would buy would behttp://store.hp.com/ItalyStore/Merch/Product.aspx?sel=NTB&id=1AN38EA&opt=ABZ&p=c-hp-spectre-x360-not...By the way i know the audio-bug but it's not important, are there more issues like wireless issues, screen flickering, pen digitizer etc.? On internet there are any information on this newest spectre x360.Thanks as always to this wonderful community.

A:Does linux works well on new spectre x360 ac-0xx series?

In general it is not easy to get Linux installed on Skylake and KabyLake laptops because of the difficulty of installing from a usb disk. On my Spectre 13-v which is a Sky Lake I would up running Kubuntu 16.04 as a virtual machine from Windows rather than a dual boot. That was about a year ago and I have not tried again recently.

Nvidia Releases Updated Linux Drivers for the Old GeForce 8 and 9 Series

Lots of fixes have been implemented in this release
Nvidia has updated the Legacy branch of the Linux drivers and developers have fixed quite a few issues. This is a driver aimed at older hardware, so if you just got your shiny and new Titan video card, this driver will be of no use to you.

Spoiler: Nvidia 340.93 Changelog
- Fixed a bug that caused the X server to crash if an OpenGL application tried to allocate a drawable when GPU-accessible memory is exhausted.
- Fixed a bug that could cause an Xid error when terminating a video playback application using the overlay presentation queue in VDPAU.
- Updated nvidia-installer to avoid recursing too deeply into kernel source trees under /usr/lib/modules, mirroring an existing restriction on recursion under /lib/modules.
- Fixed a rare deadlock condition when running applications that use OpenGL in multiple threads on a Quadro GPU.
- Fixed a kernel memory leak that occurred when looping hardware- accelerated video decoding with VDPAU on Maxwell-based GPUs.
- Fixed a bug that caused the X server to crash if a RandR 1.4 output provided by a Sink Output provider was selected as the primary output on X.Org xserver 1.17 and higher.
- Fixed a bug that caused waiting on X Sync Fence objects in OpenGL to hang indefinitely in some cases.
- Fixed a bug that prevented OpenGL from properly recovering from hardware errors or sync object waits that had timed out.

IBM THINPAD 600SERIES, TYPE: 2645 PENTIUM 2, WINDOWS 98 2ND EDITION

sometimes, 98 opens fine, 1st time

more often, you get: when switch laptop on, you just get no-where, with irriatating messages:

'error' then it lists these numbers: 00173
00192
00163

at the bottom offers 'ok' or 'cancel'

neither of which get you to 98 anyway
pressing cancel lists those numbers again, with NO options to exit or cancel, etc, & no mouse (mouse is on 1st screen mentioned)

doesn't respond to ctrl, alt delete at this stage have to switch off manually

if you slect the 'ok' (instead of cancel) at the 'error' prompt (the 1st screen which comes up after switch on) it gives you a date check screen, & time etc
& only 'ok' or 'cancel' at bottom

if you select 'ok' it re-boots then offers yet another screen (still no 98) thsi one says: 'off' with an arrow pointing towards word 'on' to which I assumed it is asking me to switch off then on again? no mouse here either

if you switch off, then on again, THIS DOES ENTER 98 OK

how do I stop this silly error sequence prior to 98 screen? by the way, no probs running windows I don't think it is the o/s

when you 1st switch on, top left screen says: 064960ok
with 192 directly below

words: ibm top rt & thinkpad bottom left

but even if you shut windows down correctly it brings the error messages above, sometimes with just 192 but oth... Read more

This laptop was new April 2003. Was working well (with one excpetion having to do with the CD drive) until a couple days ago. Battery is fully charged and machine is usually run from AC.

Cursor started freezing requiring shutdown and restart from power button. That happened while online as well as offline.

Then restart from power button started to fail to restart the machine: button worked sometimes to restart the computer, did not work on others. Letting it sit awhile sometimes changed a "no restart" event into a "restart without trouble and as usual" event.

Now pressing the power button lights up system status indicators just below screen for a mini second, the hard drive starts to move (there's sound under the keyboard for as long as the lights are on), then the hard drive sound stops and all of the lights go out except what I think (I'm not sure) is the hibernation status light and the AC power light.

Pressing and holding the power button again shuts down the hibernation light and leaves the AC power light on. The screen during all of this is black.

I looked in the Service and Troubleshooting Guide. Startup problems discussed there suggest using the Access IBM button if the operating system does not start. Have tried that: does not work because the trouble shooting directions tell me to use the Access IBM button when the laptop starts and a prompt is displayed on the screen to interrupt start up, and then choose a utilities page for hel... Hi AllI recently acquired an A22m in very nice shape for next to nothing, and am currently doing a fresh install of Windows 2000. I went onto Lenovo's support page and after selecting Laptop on the first category, the sub-category for which Thinkpad series it is part of doesn't have a selection for "Thinkpad A Series", but seems to have every other series listed. I went on the support chat and was told to call technical support and once I did that, was told by technical support to search their forum. Nothing showed up, and I thought I should post here instead. Will the page for the A series be put back up? I really want to get this laptop back up and running.  Thanks,Luke

Welcome to the forum!

Congrats for your purchase, that's a nice fine machine you got there

Unfortunately I don't think you may find the drivers in the official Lenovo site soon, the site is being re-structured and probably many other older Thinkpads won't be there anymore.

In your case I would suggest to check this page for more details about your A22m: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:A22m, then try to identify the correct components and google them to find the corresponding drivers.

It is very annoying.  I have tried just about everything to try to keep Tap-to-Click disabled, but nothing has worked. I completely removed and reinstalled the Synaptics drivers. I tried installing the vanilla Synaptics drivers from their website. I tried searching through the regisrty too see if I could disable it there. I tried updating firmware. I even kept the Synaptics preferences window open, the one with the Tap-to-Click checkbox toggle, while putting the comuter to sleep and waking it up. NOTHING has worked. It's been impossible to keep the thing disabled. Is there a fix for this?

Hello everyone,I am new to this forum, and of course, have question. I am just about buying a P71 but was puzzled with the info of the dealer, that I cannot get the machine without a preinstallation of Win 10 as it is "branded" in the UEFI. Does this mean the Win 10 license is fixed and I cannot just use a new Win 10 Pro package?I always prefer to do that installation by myself from a pure new dvd or usb. Now, if I wipe off the SSD, than I will need to obtain the Win 10 license over the UEFI or can I use a new one as well? As far as I read here in the forum, a fresh installation seems possible with some hassle.May I experience some problems here? I believe the preinstallation includes some additional Lenovo software as well as some necessary drivers. I would assume that all drivers I should be able to obtain from Lenovo pages.I do understand, that Lenovo may optimally sets up those machines to some extent, but....I am little bit irritated by that policy - giving the buyer no choice. Many thanks in advance. Greetings, Joe

A:Thinkpad P Series Windows 10 UEFI branded?

If you buy a machine that has a windows 10 pro license pre-installed, you can download a fresh copy from MS and install over it.  It will activate automatically and will not require a new key to be purchased.  If you buy a machine with 2 drives and want to reinstall, I suggest removing the non-boot disk before installing. Also, I suggest installing onto a wiped drive.  That will make sure your boot loader is on the right disk.  You can do this in the install process with a custom install.  You can then add your other drive(s) back in.  (obviously, my suggestion should be modified if you want to use a RAID on your boot drive.)

Hello all, Long time thinkpad user from the W700 time haha. Just wanted to drop a line after recently getting a thinkpad x270 instead of the x280. I got a little worried with the design philosophy of the thinkpad x270 --> x280 lineage.  I got the x270 because of the bigger removable battery capacity along with the ethernet port among other ports.  I welcome the usb-c port in the x270 and glad to see more of that in the x280. But the fact that the x280 does not have an ethernet port along with a non-removable battery with the option to add the huge super cylindrical battery was a deal breaker for me and I see that the x280 was a step backwards in terms of a design / functionality standpoint from the x270. I am just getting a little bit worried about the design team and their vision for what the x2## series have in the future. The x280 seems to be just a cheaper version of the x1 carbon.  I have the x1 carbon btw lol. Got a few thinkpads... and I like the design for the x1 carbon and i think that to remain as it is...for the thinkpad x1 carbon. I dont want that spilling over into the x2## series. That is supposed to be a pure work horse mobile productivity device.  Anyway what do you guys all think about the direction which the x280 is taking from the x270 which I thought (referencing to the x270) was a pure great work horse laptop with an AMAZING battery life which is absolutely CRITICAL to the x200 line of thinkpa...
