Installing a theme - already downloaded, trying to locate the .theme file

Q: Installing a theme - already downloaded, trying to locate the .theme file

Hey all,

I've seen several tutorials online for installing themes on Windows Vista. I've patched the necessary files using VistaGlazz, and have downloaded themes from various sites. The instructions tell you to move both the folder and the .theme file into the C:/Windows/Resources/Themes folder, but all the file seems to download is the folder. Where would I find the .theme file? All of the tutorials that I've seen just seem to assume that there's a .theme file there, but in all of the themes that I've downloaded (from various sites), there doesn't seem to be one.

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim

Preferred Solution: Installing a theme - already downloaded, trying to locate the .theme file

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I had four themes for Firefox, including the default one. When I opened Firefox, I was told that the one I was currently trying, called Midnight Fox, had an available update to install, so I did so. When it was done, every theme, including the default one, was "Disabled for your protection. Known to cause security/stability issues". Obviously, I'm unable to browse using Firefox, now. I managed to somehow reach the add-ons tab of Firefox (via squinting just to see the text) and when I clicked Use Theme on either of the only two available themes I can see (Orbit Orange and MidnightFox), it states that both "Require additional items". What the hell should I do?

Edit: Problem solved. Through rough navigation, I managed to go to the firefox addon page and install a random theme, allowing me to uninstall each corrupt theme.

Howdy.

I downloaded a PSP theme a week ago and installed it on my laptop.

I've tried to delete it, however, the when I shutdown the lappy, the PSP screen pops up.

That isn't tooooo much of a problem. The real problem is when I start up the computer it asks me to "restore windows XP" and some other option (???) before it will start.

Also, I have tried to run the "error checking" tool, but since the instalation of this PSP theme, it will not run.

Help is very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Gary.

Hi all,

For the past few days, if not a week now, I've noticed that when I switch to Basic theme for RAM intesive programs like Adobe After Effects, Windows is quite slow, almost running as though my laptop is 1GB not 2GB RAM.
Though when I switch to Aero theme, Windows is only slightly slower with Adobe After Effects running.

My laptop is Compaq Presario CQ56, 2GB shared graphics and I can't explain why the Basic theme is running slow whereas Aero is responding faster, so much so, programs tend to stop responding more frequently on Basic.

I have run MSE, MBAM and SAS (MSE realtime, others are standalone mode) and found no viruses and I update them all either daily or every two days.

I only have Realtek Audio and MSE on Startup so I can't figure out why this happening!

Thanks in advance for any insight as to what's happened/happening

A:Windows 7 Home Premium basic theme is slow but aero theme is fast?

How much dedicated video memory does the laptop have?
It's conceivably possible that you are actually dumping more onto the system reserved ram by turning it off If the configuration is sharing ram with your video card anyway.

I have downloaded a new theme, installed it,checked"use this theme",restarted F/F,but cannot get F/F to use the new theme. This happens even when I try to change the theme to an older theme that I have installed.I know I'm missing somethig here, but I don't know what.
Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

A:Cannot use newly downloaded theme

Once you have downloaded your .jar file, simply drag it onto the Firefox Theme Manager window. The theme manager can be found in the Firefox: Tools > Themes. Firefox will ask you whether you want to install the theme - click Yes.
Then restart Firefox.
You can also open Tools> Themes and click Get More Themes.

Hello. I've recently reformatted my computer and since then I've been having this rather annoying problem. When I select classic theme from the personalization menu then try to switch back to my custom theme, the only thing that changes is the color scheme but nothing else after the "Please Wait" dialog. Restarting the computer is the only way to make custom themes work again.

I've tried running the troubleshooter for aero when it happens but it doesn't find any issues.

Some of my games require transparency/aero to be completely off to reduce input delay/other issues. And since I close/open the game sometimes several times, I like to keep it on classic as long as I'm in my gaming session.

Side question: Does anyone know how to make custom log on screen background stick? Mine likes to revert back to default randomly.

A:Can't change back to custom theme from classic theme w/o restarting

Are you trying to use a 3rd party custom theme?

For the logon screen I used Option 1 of this tutorial Log On Screen - Change it have never reverted back.

can anybody give me any advice or a solution to my problem? just today i turned on my laptop and it said that windows had changed my theme and colour scheme, then i came to realise that my premium version of vista looked like it was the basic version. switchin between windows no longer provides that swanky 3d view and is replaced by a little box with icons. when i rest my mouse upon my bar at the bottom, i no longer get a little version of the window, i just get a dull beige text box. all these problems are purely superficial but one of the reasons i got vista was because of its style and way it looked. any tips?

So, I recently reinstalled my Windows 7 and tried to install custom themepack I had before, but instead of applying it Windows just changes it's theme to basic. Before the re-installation everything worked fine. I didn't even have to patch system files to apply custom theme. I tried repairing Windows system files with System files checker (it found some corrupted files and said they're fixed or something). I Installed UXStyle, neither it helped. I tried to install custom packs with 7tsp but the result is the same.
The fresh-installed Windows is the same that was installed before.

How can I change the theme (background picture, etc) for the default profile, so that when new users log in and get a new profile created, they get a different theme than the one they currently receive?

A:How to change the theme in the default profile so new users get a different theme

Hi,
Let?s make things clear first, you just want to make new user install the changed theme, right?
If I still misunderstand, please feel free to let me know.
Generally, if an oem.theme exists in the profile, it will be loaded directly. If oem.theme doesn?t exist, HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\InstallTheme will be checked. theme manager will go ahead to use it to create the theme.
From my test result, if you  configure this registry in HKLM hive, when you load new user, it would create your specified theme:

if there's a way of changing it by using software or any kind of application or by accessing regedit it would be appreciated.

A:MS Office 2013 Theme...can we change the color theme?

As far as I know there is no way you can change the colour scheme & I don't know of any 3rd party software to change it either.
I use Office 2013 Pro & while I was not impressed by the colour schemes to begin with, I have got quite used to it. While it is nice to be able to play with colour schemes it does not make it work any better.

A:Change Windows 8 theme to Window 7 default theme

You can't. If you want the win 7 theme you will have to go with a third party program or theme (style). You can fine a great many themes for win 8 on the internet by using Google, or there is Stardock's Windowblinds which allows you to use hundreds of different themes (though not all of them are worth having) they do have win 7 themes which give you the look you may be looking for (price $9.95). I use a theme which gives we the look of OS X (to each their own). . .Good Luck.

So someone I know who is very knowledgeable with computers sent me a link to a Vista theme for Windows 7. I wasn't expecting it to be compatible with Windows 10 so I tried it in Hyper-V. It was not. (I was checking because this one modifies Windows and it tells you it is risky, so I didn't want to damage my actual PC.) So I Googled for a Vista theme for 10 and found this one. https://skinpacks.com/download/windows-7/vista-skin-pack/ VirusTotal reports the site clean. I appears to be the site of origin of the original theme I was told about.

I downloaded and ran it. McAfee blocked a portion of it near the end, but I assumed this was just because of the way it modifies Windows, and I was expecting it to be mistaken for a rootkit. I also saw a link on the site for info about virus detection, so assumed this was all fine. It looks very nice.

However, after running it, there was a new program on my desktop, which I uninstalled. (Some kind of news feed) Then Chrome started redirecting me every time I clicked a link. I ran MalwareBytes free and it found many PUPs. I have the log. Almost all of them SwiftSearch. All have been removed, and no more redirections.

I then uploaded the setup exe to VirusTotal and this was the result https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/33f0f7c762a93c7a10dfb47f51166dce3ce8764ac5b6fa8b9f7f0a81949cd48c/analysis/1449567707/ not sure if false detection, or if it's detecting the bundled PUPs.

Whether uninstall the theme is your decision to make. Looking at the virus total results I would say you had / have some serious malware and adware.

Use the programs below to find and remove adware and malware.

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan button.
When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.

I tried simply opening the index.theme file from "themes" in display properties but it cannot read it. When I open it in OOO and compare it to a theme it looks very different, a theme starts with [Theme] whereas this begins with [Icon Theme]. Right Click Command Prompt > Run as administrator

When the command prompt window opens type: sfc \scannow and hit enter.

It will take a little time, when finished scanning, type "exit" without the quotes and reboot, upon restart your default icons should all be back.

If you installed something like UxTheme patcher or the likes to install 3rd party themes you may have to reinstall it after you reboot.

Is it possible that your screen has a higher resolution than the pictures? Video card/monitor problems?

If everything on the screen is pixelated, it's probably a Graphics Problem. (Coould be the monitor, video card, driver etc.) If so, you should post in the "Graphic Cards" section.

I thought it would of been third party applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking" so i got rid of McAfee and spy bot temporary just to taste it out but nothing happen.

system restore is out of the picture too because its been awhile I've been couping with this now and didn't really think it was a big deal until now

Yes you are lol. In the future dont mess about with themes. Just remember your replacing something that a team of people with probably 20 years experience each have created with a theme a 15 year old kid has created

But anyway insert your Windows installation CD and stop any autostart.
Go to Start => Run and type in the following:

expand -r E:\i386\wscui.cp_ C:\Windows\System32\

then extract that file and place it where it should go and then do the same for wscntfy.dll

You should also look at doing THIS

There is no setting in BIOS to not load the theme

Do you have the win 7 DVD? If so you can do a repair install.

I am trying to install this theme.
http://vista123.net/content/transparent-black-vista-themevs-firefox-skin

There is no .theme file in it. I have installed several themes which work fine because they have .theme file. But please tell me what to do if it has no .theme file.

A:There is no .theme file...

Not really a "Vista" problem I don't think since it appears that the theme must be "applied" using their own utility in "step 1".

Hello All,

Yesterday I was experimenting with some desktop customization software to change themes on my Windows 8.1 Pro computer.

One of the programs I installed, SkinPacks, crashed after installing a theme and seems to have done some damage to my Windows look and feel. I immediately uninstalled SkinPacks and rebooted but I am still seeing one issue.

The issue is with my Windows title bar text. The text is no longer there and has been replaced with just dashed lines. Here is a screenshot:

I tried changing my Windows theme several times using the "Personalize" option but nothing seemed to restore the title bar text.

I thought that I might be able to fix the problem by changing the font size using Display in Control Panel. When I opened Display I noticed something curious. In the "Change only the text size" section the drop-down menu for "Title bars" that sets the font size is empty. Normally there would be numbers there (e.g. 9, 10, 12, 14...) but there is nothing. Here is a screenshot:

I also tried turning Bold on and off but it had no effect.

Does anyone know how I can restore my Windows theme/look and feel back to it's original state or how to undo the changes that SkinPacks has made?

Thank you.

Jan

Try to do system restore prior to any modification you've made:

Control Panel->Recovery->Open System restore

A:helpn installing theme for windows 7 home basic

you need to use universial patcher to patch your system the program is easy and it un patches your system if you want to. make sure you create a system restore point before doing this once it is complete you can get custom themes from devient art and use them on you system hope this helps.

I want to replace original shell32.dll with a custom one to fully enable a third party theme but While replacing original shell32.dll ,windows pop-up says "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program" though I’ve taken ownership of the file and closed all programs.(please see the screenshot, if you don't understand my problem). Please someone help me............

A:Can't replace shell32.dll manually, while installing third party theme

But the system 32 folder is in the Windows core. Are you certain you know exactly what you are doing here? What backup have you saved in case things go wrong? Unless you a very experienced I would not recommend this action!

Is this a safe script for installing several desktop theme packs at once? I have a 64 bit CPU. the name of the file is _Install ThemePacks.cmd

@echo off
for %%z in (*.themepack) do (
%SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL %SystemRoot%

\system32\desk.cpl desk,@Themes /Action:OpenTheme /file:"%%z"

rem Should delay about 9 seconds to give the theme time to extract and install before moving on.
ping 1.0.0.0 -w 1000 -n 9 > nul

)
echo Done! Press any key to exit script . . .
pause>

A:Is this a safe script for installing several desktop theme packs at..?

Couldn't you just place all .themepack files into a folder, select them and press Enter?

Yes the script is safe, but it's unnecessary.

Hello,

I installed a UX theme manager today, but after I opened it, the theme changed to classic and I cannot, despite some "heroic googling" efforts find a solution to this problem. So I am turning to the experts!
Can you help me revert my theme from classic back to the default xp theme? I am at a loss!

Thanks so much for your time,

Nate

A:XP Theme Help? Theme went to Classic???

Many applications create a system restore point right before they are installed.

1. Back up all of your can't lose files
2. Complete a system restore to a time before you installed the theme manager.
3. Run windows and AV updates.

Microsoft link on using system restore.

Hi all,

Don't know if any of you can help...

I recently downloaded something but the file didn't save to the usual place. Instead, the file has been saved to a place on my PC which I am finding impossible to locate (the downloading was successfully completed after a short while by-the-way)

According to the program I used to download the file it has been saved to...

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

(I'm not sure why the file was saved here!)

When I go to C:\Documents and Settings\ I am unable to find the 'User' folder and so cannot goto (or see) the other folders where this file has been saved. The only folder I can see in Documents and Settings is 'All Users'

If any one of you can help I would be most appriciated.

Cheers,

C h r e d g e.

A:Unable to locate downloaded file

I'm guessing the folder is hidden, in explorer tried going to 'tools - folder options - View (tab) - and click show hidden files and folders'

You should be able to get there now.

McAfee and F-Secure have published reports of a new password stealer being spammed around the world. This one doesn't spread further, so it's not a virus. Once the user opens the attachment, a password stealer and a backdoor is installed to the system. I have created a dual monitor wallpaper set that needs to show a specific wallpaper on each monitor as it shuffles through the files, and combining them into one stretched wallpaper doesn't work in this case because my monitors are different resolutions. The best solution I've come up with is two seperate theme files, each with the two applicable backgrounds and now I need a program to alternate between them at an interval. Does anyone have a program that can switch between theme files, or that can run monitor-specific slideshows that are in sync with one another?

Here's the first one (the green line is the monitor separation), the second one is simply a mirrored version of it.

I use Virtualbox occasionally, and I also have a patched uxtheme.dll to allow for unsigned themes. But, Virtualbox decided to stop working with a patched uxtheme for security reasons or something, so now I have to unpatch it every time I want to load Virtualbox. It gets old real fast. But that got me to thinking: Is there a way I could write a bat file that would unpatch uxtheme.dll, load Virtualbox, and repatch it after Virtualbox closes? I've found Universal Theme Patcher to work the best, so if there's a way to do it using that, that would be preferable. Thanks for any help.

A:Unpatch uxtheme.dll through Universal Theme Patcher with bat file?
