Problem with IE, MSE, Chrome & Windows Update: 0x80244019

Q: Problem with IE, MSE, Chrome & Windows Update: 0x80244019

Good day,

For quite a few weeks now I have had a problem with getting windows update and MSE to... well update . Each time I attempt to do so, they always return with the error 0x80244019. I have been checking on other fourms, and a few users seem to have the same error, but none of the suggestions seem to resolve my issues. For some strange reason, when ever I try to access a page in IE or Chrome it always (no matter what page I attempt to go to) returns with the xampp homepage - and it's not even on! Here is an example with chrome (note the address bar ):

error1.png picture by darestium - Photobucket

And with MSE:

error2.png picture by darestium - Photobucket

And with IE:

error3.png picture by darestium - Photobucket

I also tryed resetting IE by: Internet Options -> Advanced -> Reset. And checking the LAN and proxy settings etc. Which didn't work, I also tryed a command in cmd, which didn't work either (I got it from another page regarding a similar issue) I think it reset the network configurations or something o_O.

So, the only browser I can use is mozilla, and I can't update or anything so, I am really quite annoyed. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Problem with IE, MSE, Chrome & Windows Update: 0x80244019

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have you tried uninstalling XAMPP, and then seeing if you can update?

First of all, I thank you for your attention.

I cannot perform any "Windows update" issue since the 23/08/2016.

Each time I reach the "Windows Update" screen, I get the following error message :

In french : "Redémarrer l'ordinateur pour installer d'importantes mises à jour"

In english: "Restart the computer to install importante updates"

Then, after rebooting, nothing change.

After further investigations, I get the following error message:

In French : "windows update ne peut pas actuellement rechercher des mises à jour car vous devez tout d'abord redémarrer votre ordinateur afin de terminer l'installation précédente."

In English : "windows update cannot research update because you must first restart your computer in order to finish the previous installation".

Then, I've recreated a new catalog by executing these commands:

net stop wuauserv

ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SoftDist.old

net start wuauserv

Now all services are running but I still cannot perform updates.

My Windows 7 home destktop PC recently developed these problems:
1. Sluggish performance by Google Chrome, freezing, causing occasional crashes to blue screen;
2. Sluggish loading of desktop upon startup, very slow, sometimes failed opening of Windows Explorer;
3. Eventually Chrome stopped working - when launched, it would try unsuccessfully to load any URL; will keep trying and preventing me from opening/running anything else on the machine; eventually I'd need to shut down using the power switch. Repeated tries yielded the same result - I clean un-installed Chrome, cleaned registry, restarted, re-installed Chrome, nothing worked. Each time I'd try running Chrome, my machine essentially just froze up while Chrome tried to access the home page I'd always had it bring up upon launch.
4. I did several scans for malware using MalwareBytes Antimalware, eSET, MS Security Essentials, with no threats detected in all cases.
5. I went on SpywareInfoForum.com to seek help. I was given extensive instructions on how to scan, clean, try many things with the machine, including having it do a clean boot, to no avail. To make a long story short, I'm currently running the machine each time with a clean boot, but still the problem with Chrome remains.
6. During the investigation of this problem with Chrome I checked Windows Update and it told me I had 58 critical updates I hadn't applied. So I tried doing that, but eventually found out that the downloa... Read more

A:Windows Update Excruciatingly Slow, Google Chrome Compatibility Problem

Update: I have now been able to get my Windows 7 fully updated. This is from reading and following instructions from this page:
I downloaded the MS convenience rollup package, ran that, it installed a bunch of updates all the way up to May 2016. I then used Windows Update to do the remaining patches, several at a time, until the last batch, when I did about 20, 25 of them, and this time, they downloaded and installed fairly quickly.
So great, I got that one problem solved. But then Google Chrome is still not behaving normally on my clean (and still booting clean), fully updated Windows 7. I still have to run it in Vista compatibility mode, otherwise it will hang on launch, trying over and over to load a starting page, without success. And it can't get to any other page either, eventually just causing me to close or kill it with the Task Manager.
Help! Anyone here have any idea how I should troubleshoot and fix this ongoing problem?
Thanks for any and all advice.

MS' words of wisdom can be found here. I've been having problems using Windows Updater lately. I can't be bothered to fix it as I update manually anyway. I start IE, google Windows Update and click the link. May not work for everyone.PS: I read the article and started the Background Intelligent Transfer Service in Automatic and my updater is now running. I suggest you try doing that first rather than going through all the other MS steps. Thanks for your help!!

This error is sometimes related to a Trojan Virus. I would recommend that you run a very thorugh antivirus and spyware scan to be safe. This may also be of help with this.

After my account was hacked I have been unable to use Windows Update and get a connection error or no result. I have tried to follow the Microsoft help and none of their troubleshooting has helped. As the title states, I just finished a system update after receiving a notification that it would proceed in a couple minutes with the options of postponing it with 1 hour or 4 hours.
Computer performed update/restart. I let it boot up and gave it some time to collect itself on start. Came back about five minutes after and tried to run Google Chrome browser. Nothing happens. I'm unsure if the two are related but I'm at a complete loss.
I performed a Microsoft Essentials quickscan and found nothing. I then moved on to a Malwarebytes scan and found 125 potentially unwanted items. Many of them pertaining to google chrome extensions. All items found had unrecognizable names and seemed fishy, so I removed them. Restarted the system and still no progress.
I tried to download/install a fresh Google Chrome file from Internet Explorer but the install stopped and disappeared midway without any signs as to why.
I looked at the 'Services' tab underneath Task Manager and have found:
* gusvc - Google Software Updater - Stopped
* gupdate - Google Update Service (gupdate) - Stopped
* gupdatem - Google Update Service (gupdatem) - Stopped
If I try to "Run Service", I am hit with "The operation could not be completed. Access is denied."

My win security started popping up today with alerts, i scanned my PC with malware bytes and removed the reults. Google Chrome would then open but would not open any pages, luckily firefox still worked.

Unfortunately i googled the problem, and found some fixes people said would work before i found this site.

I ran Kaspersky which did not fix the problem but found 1 file sds.sys - which i removed, it didnt fix the problem. I also ran Combofix, which seemed to fix Chrome but not win vista updates, it also disabled security essentials.

I just read that i shouldn't have done this! So lesson learnt, i hope you can still help.

I have had issues since last patch Tuesday:
When I try to start Skype nothing seems to happen (no window opens).
Also IE does not want to connect to anything.
If I go to the options IE10 all except file and safety are greyed out.

I have tried resetting through the internet options in the control panel, check no proxies are set.
I have run 2 different "iefix " programs, looked in the event viewer (not sure what to look for, nothing obvious visible...)

I have uninstalled Skype and subsequently re-installed it.

My Firefox and Chrome are fine. I have done a system restore a few times which solves the problem, but as soon as updates are installed the same happens again.

I run W7 64 pro.

totally at a loss now, have spent 2 days trying to find what the cause is.

Would really appreciate if someone has any ideas!

many thanks, Jaap

I use Classic Shell

After a recent update, whenever I drag a tab out of Chrome, open an incognito, or compose a message in cpanel, the new window triggers the Windows8-style Chome (ie exits my classic shell). For example, when I click "Manage attachments" below, it opens it in the Windows-8 style.

How do I fix this?

Thank you,

Yesterday, Microsoft kicked off the second round of Windows 10 core updates with build 10525, providing you opted to "Get Insider builds" and have linked your Microsoft ID to the Windows Insider program. The next major update for Windows 10 is expected to ship in the fall as Wave 2 and Insiders will be providing feedback on that process before it happens.

Although Microsoft informed users of the "known issues" with Windows 10 build 10525, one particular issue that was overlooked relates to the 64-bit version of Google Chrome. Whenever the browser is launched in 10525, all tabs crash and you are presented with the following message:

No websites load and all plugins and extensions crash with the above message, reading: ?Aw, Snap! Something went wrong while displaying this webpage. Closing the apps and tabs that you don't need may help by making more memory available.? Not cool.

Here's a workaround for Chrome crashes in Windows 10 build 10525 [Update]

So it seems that since I updated the driver to my HD7950 OC I have been getting BSOD crash dumps when using Chrome. I also noticed recently that Windows Update has not been working properly. I removed all anti virus software and downloaded Avira yesterday. Well I got a BSOD mid scan and now Avira will not work correctly. It gives me an error when I try to run a scan. Below is the data I get after the BSOD. The more and more I think about it the more I think this may be a virus.

A:BSOD when using Chrome, Windows Update not working, PC acting strange

Now after a few attempts Avira is scanning. Not sure why I was getting errors before. I am to the point where I may try to reload windows. Also to give more detail, when in Chrome alot of times I will get the "Oh Snap" where the whole page will just quit and I have to reload. I also noticed that the screensaver no longer works. It tells me I need a newer video card or driver for the screen saver. Below is my driver.
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

After looking in my device manager it seems my driver is the issue. Ever since I downloaded that stupid AMD Gaming Evolved Driver Software it has screwed up my PC. I just tried to do the "roll back driver" option in device manager but the computer just sits there forever loading. Seems I have found the problem but now I need the solution.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.

It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

So I just got a new Dell Inspiron One 23 all-in-one desktop, it's running windows 8. It seems to be working fine in Metro mode (the start screen). But there is a problem in desktop mode. When I try to use Internet Explorer (I believe this version is IE10) I get a weird menu that shows up in the bottom of the screen in IE.

It contains source code information for the website and has a menu bar that starts with "file", and a progress bar for whatever site is currently loading and says a few other things to the right of the source code. It's almost like I've hit some hotkey combination that pulls this up, but it seems to be random, sometimes I'll be typing an address into the address bar or something into a text box and it will happen (it could be on any keystroke). Weirdly, when I hit print screen to try to get an image of the problem, the menu disappears. I managed to get a picture of it but accidentally erased it. I haven't been able to reproduce the problem when I want to, it just sort of happens. I've never seen this menu before on any version of IE and I don't know what it's called.

I noticed also that on Chrome, the same thing happens, I'll be writing and a weird menu shows up in the bottom of the browser. It's a little different from the one in IE, but it's still there. This menu also disappears when I hit print screen.

Given that it's happening on both browsers, and that no particular combination of keys seems to bring it up, I'm starting to believe that... Read more

That is why I dumped Chrome ages ago.
But lets try and help.
Uninstall it completely from your system.
If you want to still use it, then find the latest version.
See if that improves it.
If did does not why not try Edge and see if the trouble you are having improves, if not Chrome then some other problem.

A couple of weeks ago I installed Windows 8 (fresh install from scratch, not an update) on my computer. I do a lot of web browsing and over the last couple of weeks I've been using Windows 8, I could swear the web browsing wasn't as fast at it used to be on Windows 7.
I then noticed I was having major issues bringing up my router's control panel (ASUS RT-N56U) so thinking it was my router I upgraded the firmware. Turned out, the Avast Anti-Virus I was running has issues with Windows 8. I removed AVAST and turned on Windows Defender (which in Windows 8 is also an anti-virus program now referred to MSE - Miscrosoft Security Essentials). MSE has gotten fairly good reviews so I decided to use it, for maximum compatibility with Windows 8.

However, although the router control panel would now come up okay, browsing still seemed to not be quite as fast as it used to be. I sat down at the old 5-year old Dell Desktop next to me that is running Windows 7, both computers were connected to the router via Gigabit Ethernet. I tested network speeds with Speedtest.net to make sure they were both getting the same Internet speeds (which they were.) I found a couple 'heavy' web pages to test:

www.epicurious.com (home page)
sports.yahoo.com (home page)

The browsing was MUCH faster on the Windows 7 machine!! So I decided to do more of a controlled test.

I do not have a Windows Update problem, but I do have a Microsoft Update problem. The latter is a tool to check for updates for Microsoft products other than Windows.

I finally installed Office 2016 Professional X64 this week and I should be able to configure Windows Update to check for updates for it, but I can't, as the link at the bottom of "Windows Update" home page ("Get updates for other Microsoft products. Find out more") to do so, points to this meaningless MS web page as shown on right side of image, below:
Microsoft Windows Update

Currently, system is set to receive updates for Windows only, and doesn't offer an option to configure it for other Microsoft product updates.

Anyone have a resolution for this, as it's essential to be able to update this product.

I've Office 2010 Professional installed on my other Win 7 Ultimate laptop, and updates for it have never been a problem. It's set to receive updates for Windows and other Microsoft products, unlike this machine.

This machine is less than a year old, but I chose to "downgrade" the OS from Win 8.1 Pro to Win 7 Pro when purchased. Could that be the issue here?

I have Windows 7 Service Pack 1 64 bit and I.E. 11 so I don't know what to make of this. On the face of it the update ought to apply to my computer but something clearly isn't right. I may update to SP3 at some point, but I'm not ready for the hasle at the moment so is the windows update code number for SP3 the same as the one I mentioned above in the add or remove programs list? Have you tried the download again it's possible it could have corrupted. You don't say what system you have, make model etc. or what security programs you have. Is everything up to date with everything and have you run scans to make sure you've not got any unwanted things running.
