Preferred Solution: WinXP Reverting back to Windows classic???

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: WinXP Reverting back to Windows classic???

Unzip the following file to your desktop. Then double click on the .reg file and at the prompt, allow it to merge into the registry. That should restore the XP style theme.

Well, idk if this is a virus or what. I dont think it is. My theme keeps reverting back to classic. When i go to prop. and switch it back, my other themes are deleted. exp. Windows xp. So i downloaded StyleXP to change themes. This helps once in a while but when it does, windows classic stays. How do i fix this?

P.s. I hope i posted right :( if not, please tell me how to fix it then.

A:Theme keeps reverting back to W Classic

Check if Windows is set to 'best performance':

Start > Run > Control Panel (switch to claissic view) > System > Advanced > Performance. if it is set to best performance, then set it to best appearance.

It happens recently (about a week ago)
Suddenly my windows xp theme reverts back to Classic Style in about 2-3 seconds before it reverts back to normal theme.
I thought it's not something important and my winamp is still playing the sounds like usual, so i didnt notice it until i open zoomplayer. The video runs fine but i cant hear the audio. After that i close my winamp, and when i re-open it back and try to play a song, it gives me "Bad Sound Driver".
After i restarted the computer, the sound is back. But it will happen again in 20-40 minutes after that.

This link also shows the same problem that i have but to view the answer, i need to pay and i dont have any credit card.

Update : I managed to start back the Window Audio Services in Administrative Tools but the problem will occur back after that so it's a loop.

hi i'm new to the forum just need a few help with things,
I had this problem for a while now and i am getting physically sick of changing back to the original theme then having to switch it off and then it would be switched back to the old classic theme which you and me know looks a bit old and bland i hope there are some computer technicians on because i haven't found anyone who could fix this problem yet.

I thought it would of been third party applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking" so i got rid of McAfee and spy bot temporary just to taste it out but nothing happen.

system restore is out of the picture too because its been awhile I've been couping with this now and didn't really think it was a big deal until now

I have the window vista home premium please can anyone help i will be so grateful.

All I can suggest is to selectively disable items in your startup and see what's affecting itI'd use a startup manager for that purpose instead of msconfighttp://www.snapfiles.com/get/starter.html

I have a laptop bought nine years ago, now running Windows 10 Home version 1903. It is only used when there is a problem with my desktop computer, or when a portable PC is needed. It was originally using Windows 7 but with the present operating system it is almost unusably slow, with boot up 2 mins. 40 seconds and loading imaging software nearly three minutes ? there is only one program loaded at startup ? defender (msconfig). I have the Windows 7 original product serial number and an OEM copy of Windows 7 ? is it possible to revert without buying a new copy of Windows 7, it would then presumably be much quicker ? the lack of future fixes would be acceptable. Or maybe there is a way to make it go faster in Windows 10?

A:reverting from Windows 10 back to 7

I upgraded to Windows 10 on July 30th from Win7.
Before I did I cloned my Win7 disk to another spare drive.
I periodically boot into that drive and after a few minutes it tries to Upgrade to Win10 and fails. I want it to stop doing that.
It probably fails because the upgrade files in the download folder are corrupt.
I have uninstalled KB3035583 and hidden it.
How do I stop Windows 7 from trying to upgrade to Windows 10?
I already called Windows Support and they were no help and they had no problems with me running Windows 7 and Windows 10 on the same machine as long as I didn't run them both at the same time (how could I?).

I was also ripped off by your company after purchasing a 3 year antivirus program which I was just told by the company that handles that, that you only set it up for a year after I paid for 3!!!! I've been completely ripped off and when I tried to talk to someone on the online chat, after being connected, and they gave their greeting, there was no reply after I sent my issue to them!!! This is the worst company I've ever done business with!!! Almost $2000 down the **bleep**ing drain!!! Never again will I ever buy an HP product! NEVER AGAIN!!! And I will talk to my rep to close my business accounts as well!!! If you can't do right by my personal account what makes me think you will do right by my business ones?!!! -Tomas

Alright, I'm using this Microsoft article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971760/

I have the windows.old folder on my HD, everything intact, but when I type and of the commands, it tells me it cannot find the file specified. I know they're there. ;_;

I'm going to cry.

A:Reverting back to XP via windows.old.

Step 3 says that if you receive that message to move on to step 4 as follows:

Step 4: Copy the contents or move the contents of the Windows.old folder
Note When you type one or more of the commands at the command prompt in the following steps and press ENTER, you may receive the following message:
The system cannot find the file specified.
If you receive this message, go to the next step in this section, and then type the command in that next step.

Type the following commands at the command prompt:
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
move /y c:\windows.old\windows c:\
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
move /y "c:\windows.old\program files" c:\
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
move /y c:\windows.old\users c:\
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
move /y “c:\windows.old\documents and settings” c:\
And, it looks like if you get that same message again, you're supposed to move on to step 5. Its confusing for sure but it looks like you have to figure out exactly where the .old file is supposed to be and get it there if needed. Without seeing or knowing more that's my best guess.

Hi, I am trying to reset my laptop back to the original windows 7 it came with from Windows 10. I went on the Microsoft website and even though I have the product / license key they told me that as this came pre installed on my equipment I needed to contact the manufacturer. I have looked and looked on the HP website and I cannot find anything to help me and I do not see why I have to purchase another copy of Windows 7. My laptop doesn't even revert to factory setting as I have tried this several times and I am still stuck with Windows 10. The laptop is my standby as I have a new one but I can't get my old Lexmark printer to work in Windows 10 but it worked fine in Windows 7 so I want to have my older laptop reverted back to windows 7, my new one came with windows 10 as it's only 5 months old. Any help to get Windows 7 back on my laptop would be appreciated and I would have thought that HP would and should be able to help.

Hello,

Sorry to bother, could someone please help out?

My computer has gotten slowly all of a sudden during the last 2 weeks.

It takes several minutes when trying to open/rename/copy/move/deletes folders/files, and even longer when emptying the recycle bin. Same goes with opening some programs especially FireFox & Winamp.

I also keep getting this message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" It crashes every time I try to play certain videos, copying or moving files.

For the last couple years, I kept getting the message "Your system is low on virtual memory" My current memory is 256MB of RAM, I will buy another bar of RAM soon, still it's not an excuse for the sudden slowness, especially when I don't have powerful programs that requires the upgrade.

I have scanned with SpySweeper and Panda, both detected malware, unfortunately no fixing was done since both require payment to do so.

I scanned then with Ad-Aware, Spybot and AVG and fixed whatever they found.

I do have a log of Panda and screencap of SpySweeper, so if HJT log fails to be useful, I will provide the other 2 logs if requested.

I hope I provided enough information, and many thanks for taking the time to help out!

Positively yes.

Once you have windows 10 installed and activated, you have the Digital Entitlement. That is good for the life of your computer.
Going back to Win 7 and factory reset makes no difference. (Provided you do not change motherboard.)
You are still entitled to re-install Windows 10 in the same computer any time you want and as often as you want.
There is no time restriction as to when you want to re-install.

So, if I upgrade to Windows 10 when it's released, and find I can't get along with can and I then uninstall it and re-install Windows 7 with my original licence key?

Hi all,
I upgraded; no, downgraded to Windows 10 - I guess you get what you pay for.

2 Days later I downgraded but with a clean install of my Win 8.1 Pro. In the updates it still installed the KB "important" update even though I hid it. After reboot the rotten icon was back again - that hamburger thing - so I uninstalled the KB 303 cannot remember the rest, but the icon is gone and no gmx.exe is on my system

Is there a way via regedit to stop it ever doing it again? I might upgrade when it no longer looks like a beta version and bugs are ironed out, but at the moment I loathe it with a vengeance.

Am I the only one who likes windows 8.1 and the metro screen? I find it useful across devices for the work I do.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any answers

Just hide the update if it shows up in updates again. You have to delete the GWX folder, if the Uninstall does not remove it.

Is a revert back to windows vista from windows 7 WHILE still keeping your files and settings possible?

I need to do this as i cant dual boot because Vista wont let me shrink my 286GB partition past 9GB.

A:Reverting back to Vista from Windows 7

Did you install Windows 7 in a dual boot setup or installed Windows 7 over Windows Vista?

You need to backup your files in C:\Users\<username> and and other settings to an external hard disk or CD/DVD. Then you can reformat the drive and reinstall Vista.

Usually settings can be transferred from an old OS to a new OS or from the same OS but not backwards from a new OS to an old OS due. In this case I would say no.

You can back up files such as documents, pictures, email, music and so on but not settings, they will have to be done from scratch

One thing to note: only the style gets reverted on reboot, all the other interface appearance settings (font size, window color, desktop background, menu animation, etc.) remain intact.

Tried reinstalling IE7 but error came up saying IE7 is not supported on this operating system.

Also tried turning off IE8 so it would revert back to IE7, but after restarting there is no internet browser available at all.

any suggestions!

thank you

A:troubleshooting reverting back to IE7 in windows 7

IE7 is not compatible with Win7. Windows 7 came with IE8, so you can't go backwards.

If you are having compatibility issues, you can click the little "broken page" next to the URL in the address bar and refresh the page, or you can download a different browser to see if it's an IE issue.

Of course you can also upgrade to IE9 as well.

Hi,
Here at work we need to set a particular DNS addresses for our internet to work.
All of our computers' network adapters have the Obtain IP address automatically checked, and use the following DNS servers:
122.49.191.252
122.49.191.253
(Adam internet, for those of you in Adelaide )
However, there is one particular Windows 8 Laptop that no matter what we do, reverts back to "get the DNS automatically." which makes the internet not work on there.
What is bizzare is that during the morning and day it is OK and around 5PM it starts to cut off. Not sure if this has anything to do with peak users or Adam Internet but that is beside the point.

How can we fix this TCP/IP properties issue?
We run it off a dynadock so initially I thought it was that adapter somehow reverting back to original setting, But I tried the DNS setting on the onboard adapter and also the WiFi adapter, and they all go back to automatic setting, as soon as you click OK and Close.

Please help!
Thanks

A:TCP/IP setting on windows 8 reverting back to automatic

My initial thought is (and I've just woken up so...) it's a piece of software that's being run or is running in the background that is resetting the DNS information.

have you tried running it in safe mode , setting the DNS in the period you usually have issues and see if then resets back ?

Hi everyone-

After backing up my files from Vista, I
Installed Win 7 Ultimate six weeks ago.

Since then, I had to use "System Restore" about five times. The issue is that sometimes on booting, my HP desktop reverts back to "freshly installed version of Win7".

All my files , photos, bookmarks, etc are gone, so I have to use
system restore to a 'Windows Update' date.

This happened yesterday, even after booting Win 7 okay
at first, the numbers lock came on, I turned it off, and the computer reverted back to a new install of Win 7 again.

I had no problems as this with Vista.

Can anyone help me?

Hi there,

I turned on my laptop today, and I got the message "Windows failed to configure updates, reverting changes' at the logon screen, and it just loops there forever, even if i leave it there for like an hour. I can't shutdown or restart, unless I power it down.

I tried to boot into safe mode, but i can't do that either, I get the same message, and last known configuration doesn't work either.

I go to system restore, and it just fails on every system restore image. says something about failing to extract a different file each time, and the registry could not be copied on one of them.

It won't let me run a SFC /scannow check either, and I just can't get passed the logon screen stage. Startup repair doesn't help either, just says everything is fine and that my boot was successful :S weird.

Any ideas or suggestions, minimizing having to format and reinstall windows - as it's got all my alevel work on it o.0

thanks in advance!

Hello,

Solved same problem today on two computers running Win7. Both failed installing four upodates and have been like this for several days.
SOLUTION: Go to Win Update. View the four files that Win 7 is trying to update. You will see four updates with their boxes checked for auto update. Unclick update KB982018 and update only the remaining three. Later update KB982018 separately. You can also manually update these individually. This worked for me.

I been noticing lately that every time I open my power settings in the control panel, it shows the "Balanced Plan" ticked despite the fact that I've changed it to "High Performance" several times in the last month. Another thing that concerns me is that usually whenever you make any changes to settings, the "Save" button at the bottom of the page is supposed to be highlighted or (in other words: able to be ticked) but every time I visit my power settings through the control panel, the Save button is never highlighted, so I can't even click on Save even if I wanted to.

I usually just exit the control panel explorer once I made the changes I want, but as I mentioned it seems to just revert right back to the Balanced Plan option upon re-opening of the Power Settings. Maybe the fact that I cannot click the Save Button is the problem.

The only thing I can think of which may ( or may not have ) caused this problem is the fact that I was making several tweaks to the system using the Advanced management options, mostly to shut off options that I didn't need to have running, and to tighten my overall system security, etc, but I don't specifically recall ever coming across an option that would restrict me making changes to the Power settings. In fact, if I did find something like that through Advanced Management options, I would have made sure that "High Performance" was the option I wanted to keep.

The changes I did make were quite some time ... Read more

I'm running WinXP Home - I just recently reset my computer after it began working quite slowly (I thought because of system resources), and I encountered two problems upon returning to windows. First, Windows has reverted to Windows Classic Style, and Windows XP Style is not an option in the display menu. My sound drivers have apparently disappear as well. I get an "Error 88780078" every time I try to play music. All of my system restore points are gone, so system restore is out of the question. I have already run Symantec AntiVirus, Ad-Aware, and Spybot, with no problems found in any of them. Does anyone know what might be going on, and/or how to fix my problems?

I have also just discovered that I cannot enable auto-protect with Symanetic AntiVirus, and the device manager does not show any hardware at all. Thanks for any help in advance!

Yet another update - I ran network diagnostics under Windows Help tools, and I recieved WMI Errors on every test. I'm having a near panic attack!

Ok.
last week i restored my computer to factory default settings. I got the computer in June 2011. Have windows 7 profession 64bit. i fully uninstalled McAfee thinking that it was causing problems. I have Malwarebytes as the only anti virus installed. Will probably reinstall mcafee if all of this is cleaned up. Ive been suffering many blue screens over the past week. When i select windows updates>check for updates via control panel, i am greeted with: 'Windows could not search for new updates, Error(s) found, code 50080005

Solutions ive tried:
- performing a clean boot
- downloaded and used the windows update trouble shooter found here Troubleshoot problems with installing updates - WindowsUpdate_dt000
- downloaded and used System Update Readiness Tool found here System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008 . All it did was launch a windows update standalone installer, installed some hot fix (which i did twice) and went no where.
- tried running cmd as admin, running 'sfc /scannow' that tells me 'Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service' so i followed the steps found here How to Fix "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service" Error When Running SFC in Windows 7 and Vista - The Winhelponline Blog , but then i got told another system repair was pending which needed a reboot but that didnt do anything.

Im sorry, Im new to these forums so I couldn't figure out how to make a new thread.

I got the Pro upgrade last night, and I want to do a "keep all files" install. I went into the BIOS and fixed the "NX" problem by enabling it. The problem is, I can't finish the install. It gets all the way to "Getting Ready", finished the percentage there all the way to 100%. After that the PC restarts with the new windows logo, but fails to start. It restarts again, then gives an error and says
"Windows 8 installation unsuccessful, reverting back to previous version"

I have an Intel i5 2500K Unlocked with Windows 7 Home Premium
Could someone please help me?

Yes please some help here.
Myself also. 6 attempts from various starting points.
I saw a hint to unplug all USB devices. Did this; no luck.

This started last night. First problems with my sound (none at all), then XP kept reverting back to Windows Classic mode. A reboot clears it temporarily, but within a few minutes I get the dreaded Generic Host Process error message (svchost.exe), and after sending the error report (or not) it then reverts back to Classic mode. I'm also getting intermittent problems with links redirecting on Google searches.Have tried:1. SpyBot2. Trojan Remover3. Malwarebytes4. Trend Micro (online)5. Anti RootkitI use Comodo for my firewall.Collectively they've uncovered about half a dozen 'issues' (seemingly unrelated) but despite removal/quarantine nothing has changed. All current scans are reporting a clean system.Any help appreciated as this is driving me nuts. I've been Googling all day and it seems a common enough issue but an actual solution seems to be completely missing on all the threads I've encountered.HijackThis log as below:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.4Scan saved at 18:31:33, on 05/02/2011Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP3 (6.00.2900.5512)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\COMODO\COMODO Internet Security\cmdagent.exeC:\Program Files\WID... Ok so my laptop's interface for some reason has been changed somehow to the windows classic interface and I'm not able to change it back. There's not even an option for it when I right click on the desktop, go to properties and such. Also, I'm not able to pick up a signal to connect to the internet. Things are slow loading as well. I don't think it's a virus or anything so I didn't bother including a HJT log. I had installed the Firefox plug in for Windows Media Player recently, but even after that I wasn't having problems. After doing that I restarted like it told me. I don't know if that might have any sort of impact or not. It just happened randomly and abruptly. I would really appreciate any sort of help on this issue. Thanks guys.

I've checked a lot of forums and haven't found a solution to the problem so far. I see similar issues to mine, but no fix just yet.

*I have a 2011 Asus ROG with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
*It has a 500 gb HD and 2 SATA drives.
*Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M

(I would post more about the specs, but I can't get to them at the moment. I would like to download the DM log collector, but I don't see how I can at this point. I will edit this post once I'm able to.)

While my laptop was compatible with Windows 10, it performed poorly after the update. Programs became laggy and some programs didn't open at all. Steam took a while to load, and some games no longer worked. Browsing was slow and the laptop was suddenly 'noisy'. I decided to revert back to Windows 7 while it was still being offered (I had 30 days, but I didn't need that long to decide).

I got the BSOD with the 0x0000007E error.
I tried rebooting to safe mode, but the cursor is frozen in the center. I can, however, use both cursor and keyboard when I do Startup Repair. It gives me a Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline. It won't let me restore. I can't find any restore points (even though I did a backup). I do have another back up on an external hard drive. I went into BIOS and changed the boot priority so it boots from the external HD. When it did, I saw a repair Windows 7 (or something similar), and it brought me back to startup repair.

I've also backed up my files in that HD using Kaspersky's backup... Read more

Hi, i'm kinda desperate atm. My laptop has this annoying habit of reverting back to windows standard/classic theme after almost every restart. I said almost as after 2/3 and sometimes even more, my aero theme correctly appeared. After another restart right after that, the problem occurs all over again.

The search function in the start menu and windows explorer also 'failed to initialize' when in the said windows standard/classic mode.

I figured that this might have something to do with my user profile as I have the 'User Profile Service service failed the login. User profile cannot be loaded' problem once very recently but I've fixed it using the tutorial in this forum. The windows standard/classic theme problem had been on for quite a while back, before the user profile problem.

Before all this happened, I've had this 'C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable...' problem. I fixed that by copying all my files and folders in my C:\Users\[Username] folder to the location above and replacing all the files including desktop.ini. It is only after this that I've had the windows standard/classic theme problem.

I couldn't help but wonder if somehow my user profile has got something to do with it? Windows system restore could not fix this problem.

By the way, I'm using a modified aero theme at the moment, using TuneUp Utilities 2009 on a Vista Home Premium 32bit Acer 5920G laptop.

I would deeply appreciate any help for this poor s... Read more

I downloaded the beta version of Microsoft Office Professional 2007 the other day and it seems to have upgraded my Office 2003 applications rather then installing 2007 seperately and leaving me the option of using either 2003 or the beta of 2007. The beta versions are very buggy from what I understand, so what happens if I want to go back to only having Office 2003. I don't have the actual 2003 software CD. The guy I bought the computer from never included it, so I hope that I don't have to go through and reinstall everything to get 2003 back the way it was before downloading Office 2007.

Thanks

You can go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall SP2. I would then go to system restore and restore to a point before you installed SP2. There should be a point named SP2 install or something like this.

Well I don't know if there's anything better than windows default or whatever, i just want to get rid of the modification I made because I can't seem to hit anything precisely on desktop, which is actually good to have acceleration.
It's killing me because I do a lot quickly and can't seem to hit buttons, icons, and all the precise small stuff that is needed in video editing, coding, web etc.
I found this guide about game mode The Truthful Mouse Guide

But I know I used one of the guides to change registery, and I don't really see the difference by disabling/enabling "Enhance mouse percision" in controlpanel

I just want to get this back to defaults, unless there's a better setting for desktop use.

A:Reverting back to desktop

It woud certainly help to know what your "modification" was.
