Error Code: 0x80004005 - Catch 22

Q: Error Code: 0x80004005 - Catch 22

First a bit about me - so you know roughly how to pitch replies...

I used to be able to fly NT4, if only by the seat of my pants, but with 2k, I dropped out to Linux.

Now the problem: an in-law got his computer eaten by a virus, probably imported by one of his kids. I'm supposed to know about computers so the problem got onto my desk!

Starting point: I could log in as the guy (no p/w) but there was nothing on his desktop except the wallpaper.

I could run stuff, but only by the 3 finger salute, then using the 'Start new application' tab in task manager.

First off I ran the Norton anti-virus software he had installed. That found 4 infections, 3 that were automatically fixed, but the other one needed 'manual' intervention - so I intervened manually.

Next I re booted (same 'nothing' outcome) and ran the anti-virus again: nothing found that time, so I thought is was safe to move on.

I used the XP (Home, inc. SP3) CD to do a repair.

That seemed to work, but booting now requires a check on the (100% valid) product number.

This is where Catch 22 strikes!

On my network, I use explicit IPs - so I know what I'm trying to debug - but, I think, his system uses DHCP(? - automatic assignment of IP numbers), so it wasn't a big surprise when XP couldn't connect to M$. I took the box back to his place, in the hope that whatever settings he had had would work there.

No such luck. I still got the 0x80004005 error.

Since the in-law is computer illiterate, I have no hope whatever of bringing up the internet access at his, since my guesses (that existing settings work) don't!

I've brought the box back to mine, where, at least I can access the Web to dig for help - and know what settings to use if I can find a way to enter them.

I found the M$ page at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306081

Without much hope, I did what that advised: renaming the stated files and 'expand'ing them from the CD. I wasn't too surprised to find that didn't work: clearly the box doesn't have valid settings to access the internet.

My limited knowledge now only offers one option: a fresh install, which will mean (if I understand correctly) that the guy has to re-install every bit of the software he uses. If at all possible, I'd like to avoid that.

BUT... I can't log in to change the Internet settings so that the registration software can do it's stuff to validate the licence, until the license has been validated.

Does anyone know how I can get round that Catch 22?

Thanks in advance,

Roger

Preferred Solution: Error Code: 0x80004005 - Catch 22

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

i need help!! i'm at wits end with error code 0x80004005

im working on a Dell Inspiron 1150 with windows XP Home. basically, the product key files got removed in the process of cleaning up the hard drive. i did the steps shown on the website http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914232
when i got to the part where i had to type the expand commands, i kept getting an ACCESS DENIED message after each command. (for example: EXPAND licwmi.dl_C:\WINDOWS\System32, then id press ENTER, the message would read: ACCESS IS DENIED)

i went ahead through all the steps but i still cant log on to normal mode. i get to the logon screen, put the password, and it gives me an empty message box (it just has a red X). after i hit OK on it, it begins to start up but immediately logs me back out.

i can still get onto safe mode but thats about it. i run the registry cleaner on CCleaner. I get an ActiveX/COM Issue on regwiz.dll, licwmi.dll, licdll.dll, licwmi.dll, licwmi.dll and a Missing MUI Reference on LaunchPad.exe. the fix for these is to delete them, but i dont know if i should.

well this is my dilemma. i hope somebody can help me. i really need it. thanks.

I have a problem with windows validation and would really like some help.
I built a computer about a month ago, and installed a copy of Windows XP Professional. It is a legitimate disc not a pirate copy. I have also installed many software programs including AVG antivirus, Office etc

*

When I turned my computer on today it boots up but when I try to log in I get a popup saying:
*Windows Product Activation* This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate Windows now?
I have the option of Yes or No. If I click No it goes back to the Log in Screen and I don’t get much further. If I click yes I get another pop up window saying:
*Windows Product Activation* A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for the computer. Error Code: 0x80004005.
This only lets me press okay and then I am back to square one. I can’t log into my account.
(I know I should have activated before)
*
A quick browse of the internet told me that maybe some of my registry files might be corrupt. After booting up the Recovery Console from the Windows XP Professional disc I renamed the following files:
Wpa.dbl
Pidgen.dll
Licdll.dll
Regwizc.dll
Licwmi.dll
Wpabaln.exe
To:
Wpa.old
Pidgen.old
Licdll.old
Regwizc.old
Licwmi.old
Wpabaln.old
I did this with the hope I could log into the CD, and do the following:
• Expand licwmi.dl_ C:\WINDOWS\System32
• Expand regwizc.dl_ C:\WINDOWS\System32
• Expand licdll.dl_ C:\WINDOWS\System32

When I try to use Windows Update I get this error code. What does this mean and how can I fix it!?

A:Error Code: 0x80004005

Hi

A 0x80004005 is a typical warning indicating you have no Internet connection (while you may have) because the update service is having problems establishing a perfect two-way communication with Microsoft servers.

There are reasons, but first some questions:

Is your XP genuine and validated?
Do you run a proxy?
Any malware/viruses that you've scanned for recently? (best to do so)
Do you have a good network connection or is it patchy or with problems from the ISP side?

7. Wait a couple of seconds (although you will Not see any change)

8. Restart your PC normally (Start - Shutdown - Restart - Ok)

welcome to TSG.

Why are you using a third party defrag tool? The built-in windows one is generally better, as the OS is what has to access the data anyhow. Third party defraggers generally use a different algorithm and, as such, will make the OS think the drive is fragged. When that happens, the OS puts more strain on the HD.

As for O&O, however, I have no clue. If you can access it, maybe the app can't. Maybe change the path to the one on in program files. Again, I gotta state that I do not use third party defraggers.

Welcome to Seven Forums mrfreezzzz. Is this a problem that just started, and do you know when if so? If it just started, you can try a System Restore point from just before it began

System Restore

If no help, try a clean start to see if there is a conflict

Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

You might try and edit the tag information in WMP

Add or edit media information in Windows Media Player

If you can edit there, it likely isn't a file permission issue, but more an Explorer issue. You could try on another user and see if the problem occurs on that user as well. If it does not occur on another user, you could try and fix the corrupted user

Fix a corrupted user profile

If none of the above help, you should also run the System File Checker

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Did you make any changes just before the problem began? Installed any new programs? Ran any optimization programs, etc?

Would you be able to copy the file to another windows 7 PC and see if you can edit it there?

A Repair Install is also an option if the problem exists on all users, and nothing else helps.

Repair Install

Hello again, BSOD Forum,

I've been free of frequent BSODs since earlier this year. Recently I must have installed some software or something else must have gone wrong, because the blue screens are back.

Here is what happened earlier this year, in case anyone needs any further context:

Several BSODs following power outage. Varying BCCodes and frequency.

There isn't any specific behavior or action that triggers the crashes. I was listening to Spotify and browsing the internet with Chrome on the most recent crash. Also, I seem to be having trouble installing a security update from Microsoft (Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2892074)). I've tried using the "Update Readiness" tool supplied by Microsoft, but it doesn't seem to be working. It only asks if I want to install some hotfix instead of the security update that keeps failing. Not sure if these two things are related, just thought I'd throw it out there in case anyone has had experience with this issue.

Attachment 297074

Aside from that, virus scans have been clear. MSE does nightly scans (I believe), and its definitions are constantly up to date.

Attached are the SF zip files. The last crash I got was a Memory Management error. I will run Memtest86 tonight and post the results tomorrow morning. If anyone sees anything of interest in the dumps please don't hesitate to let me know.

Thanks in advance,
Jeremy

do."

In case this helps... I was having a similar problem on a new laptop (Toshiba) with Windows 7 Home Premium using wifi.  Accessing a share on an XP desktop "suddenly" stopped working.
It appears the issue is related to the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter, which was evidently installed with a driver update around the first week of April.  Even though the adapter is disabled, it appears that any changes that you make to the
settings on your "normal" wireless adapter also need made on this one.  For me, this included enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP (under IPv4 settings) and ensuring IPv6 was disabled.  Again, THE INTERFACE IS DISABLED, but these changes still
"magically" made my sharing work immediately.

Everytime try to burn an ISO file to a blank CD, I always set it to verify before finishing the disc image burning process and I always get the warning that the disc image didn't burn successfully and it has Error Code: 0x80004005.

I've tried burning disc image on a number of blank CD's but to my dismay, they all get wasted upon getting this error. This doesn't usually come before, unless the discs I used were of poor quality. I've tried different discs with different brands, different ISOs and just now a re-writable CD to no avail. I've been using the built in ISO disc image burner on Windows 7 and I also tried ImgBurn but they both report some sort of error on the disc verification process before the completion of the disc burning. I don't know how this is supposed to be. I was gonna burn some Linux ISOs but they just won't burn well.

A:ISO disc image burning always displaying Error Code: 0x80004005

There are 3 points of failure: The burning program, the disks, the burner.

You test to see if you get the same error using a different burning program (check).
You test to see if you get the same error using different media (check).
You test by using a different optical drive.

Optical drives are cheap (both meanings) and the heads can be knocked out of alignment too easily. Once that happens there is little to no chance of repairing it. It is just easier to get a new drive.

EDIT: be sure to try cleaning the drive. Use compressed air or vacuum to try and get any dust or hair out of the compartment (carefully). NEVER try to clean the lenses by touching them.

Here is line 29:

My values are defined as so:

set objRS = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
set objConn = server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")

Ok, Ive realised what it was, some of my labels were defined under the same name as default ASP variables, therefore it was throwing a wobbly at having 2 labels of the same name denoting different functions, I have now renamed everything to have a unique name and it is now co-operating. I hape someone else finds this useful

My employer just transitioned all office-based PCs to Windows 8. I'm running Widows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (SP1) on a laptop that hasn't been able to remotely access the upgraded work computer. The error message [when attempting to access 8.1 machines]
is:
"An authentication error has occurred (Code: 0x80004005)."

It is still able to access XP-based computers. The laptop is on Remote Desktop Connection Shell Version 6.3.9600 (same control version). NLA is supported. Remote Desktop Protocol 8.1 supported. I'm able to remote into the work desktop from my two
other home computers.

Our very large tech team is stumped by this too. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, before let you know about my problem, sorry about my english.
I have a serius problem with my Windows XP (not authentic). A few days ago something happens with my MSN, forced me to update my XP to Service Pack 2. Big problem because as I told you, my Win is not authentic (a copy). I found a program to validate my XP and I could install the service pack2 without any problem, but when I restart my pc gives me this fatal error, "One problem not allow Windows to check the validation of the licence on this pc. Codigo de error: 0x80004005". Of course, I don't want to format the hard disk. I can't restart in a safe way eather.

Note: I have another partition on this hard disk, with windows installed and running normally, so I can see the other part with my Windows Explorer.

If someone can help me, I will very happy.
Thank you very mich for your time
Daro

Old Thinkpad with XP Pro Sp2. No restore cd with it. After multiple trojan hits and removals.. operating system crashed. Tried to restore with borrowed cd, that resulted in bsod on boot. (unequal error) Fixed that by choosing to use an orginal registry with the help of ubcd4win.

Now I almost have it. It will boot to safe mode now and I can get into the recovery console. However when I try to normal boot it gives me
"A problem is preventing Windows from checking license" Error 0x80004005.

As I said I do not have the org. restore cd but I do have the product code obtained from keyfinder before all this trouble. I also have several other xppro cds available.
1. can I work around this?
2. if not.. if I do a clean install with a borrowed cd and use the product key
from the troubled system I am going to wipe off, Will that work?

Your help would be appreciated.

Hi everyone,

I was just helping a friend update their newly installed system running a Windows 7 Ultimate x64bit OS and have completed all Windows Updates. The Windows installation was from an image which I used to reimage the hard drive with the OS. When checking for software updates using Ninite it resulted in an error.

I honestly don't know if this could be a Windows problem, a Windows Update problem (something that could have gone wrong during/after) or could it be due to software?

Not sure if this is a normal error occurance. I've never encountered this kind of problem from a newly installed and updated system before. Any help and advise would be greatly appreciated.

A:Getting an 'Unspecified Error' - 0x80004005 for

Do you mean that attempting to install Ninite, it threw this error, or do you mean that it's installed already, and throws this error when attempting to install an update?
I don't see WU being in the list of offered 'clients' - although .NET 4.5.2 is, as are some other things possibly probably best left to WU.

“On Error Resume Next” can no longer catch the error.

In using Access 2000.
I am using the following code to test and see whether I can my application can still see the tables that are linked to it. If it cannot, then it has to get linked. There is a possibility that an error will occur if sat the “Back-End” database moved. I am using the code below to catch the error. This code has been working for sometime but then all over a sudden, “On Error Resume Next” can no longer catch the error; I get the

Run-time Error
Invalid SQL statement: expected 'Delete', 'insert','Procedure','select' or 'update'

Any one out there with a solution:

Public Function CheckLinks() As Boolean
' Check links to the AFCIO database
' Returns true if links are OK.

Dim rst As ADODB.Recordset
Dim someString As String

' This is very important, other wise if you try ot open a table that
' does not exist, the error would end the app. But because of
' "On Error Resume Next", one can continue.
' Open backend linked table to see if connection information is correct.
On Error Resume Next

Set rst = New ADODB.Recordset
rst.Open "tblCountry", CurrentProject.Connection, adOpenKeyset, adLockOptimistic

someString = rst!CountryID

' If there's no error, return True.
If Err = 0 Then
CheckLinks = True
Else
CheckLinks = False
Exit Function
End If

End Function

hey guys! I am having a problem. I just installed windows xp over windows 7 (don't ask) and it worked, but it was on sp1b, and there weren't any drivers. anyways windows realized how old my version was and started getting all of these updates, and a bunch were securities patches blah blah...
but one of them was sp2. so I was like ' yay my computer won't be so old anymore (ps I have s toshiba nb255 netbook)
so installed it and restarted my pc. but when I try to login to my account, I get this
'a problem prevented windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. error code: 0x80004005'
so I logged in using safe mode (no networking) and I tried registering all these .dll files in the /system32 directory. but no luck. so I open the windows genuine detecter program and this us what I got (all nonsense to me)

If you used the Magic Jelly Bean to "make it genuine" by changing the Product Key to one that is legit, then your XP is not "pirate". It's legit, although the data that you used might be infected, etc...Hopefully that saves your thread from being closed.I think it's possible to repair a Windows Genuine function, but don't know how to do it. It looks like your "pirated" software has the copyright protection disabled, and you need it working to validate your legal Product Key.I'd suggest doing a Repair Install with a basic OEM Installation Disk. Hopefully it will accept your Product Key. If that fails, and you have a Product Key it will accept, you can change it via MJB, and then pass the Genuine Advantage check.Maybe.Good luck. You know you are WAY out in the weeds, right ?
