Q: BSOD: Driver Power State Failure ntoskrnl.exe 0x9F

Hello,

I've been having bsod's for a while ever since I disabled the Automatic Restart. I'm going to say that I figure it might have something to do with my Toshiba external hdd but I hope I can get a fix for this. I've spent days researching online - I've tried to find if I had any drivers to update by going to my Device Manager but all "update driver" results I get are the same: they are up to date.

My zipped minidump files: http://sdrv.ms/YPs4lS
Win7 Home Premium x64
Dell Inspiron 580S
Intel Pentium G6950 2.80GHz
4GB of RAM
Service Pack 1

Bug check description: This bug check indicates that the driver is in an inconsistent or invalid power state.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Seems like a core Kernel level issue.

Things to do:

Run System File Checker to verify/repair the integrity of system files.
Full tutorial here: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Uninstall COMODO Internet Security and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows
Update it and run a full scan.

Go to Start>Run
Type MSCONFIG and press Enter.
Click on Startup tab, now click on Disable All.
Click Apply and OK. Reboot the system.

In addition, run chkdsk /f to repair corrupt hard drive sectors.
Full tutorial here: Disk Check

If all of the above fails, as a test, I'd suggest you to Enable Driver Verifier to find out which driver/software is causing the BSOD. Once you enable it, expect some frequent BSODs. After 24 hrs, disable the Driver Verifier and re-upload the dump files for analysis.

Let us know if it works.

A:Windows 7 Pro: Driver Power State Failure ntoskrnl.exe 0x9F

from the research Ive done previously etc; I do believe the ntoskrnl.exe possibly leads to ram issue. I would test the ram by running memtest86+ from the following link: its best to let it run overnight if possible and to run it several times to make certain it shows accurate results as sometimes errors wont show up right away. Here is the link to that:

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

If you get any errors from the test; then its likely you have one or more bad ram sticks

I have a HP8530P with Windows 7 professional 32bit that regularly gives a BSOD.
When I analyze the dump file it says Driver Power State Failure and that something is wrong with the usbhub.sys.

I reinstalled the chipset drivers and all other drivers to be on the safe side. But it did not help.
I then reinstalled Windows but the problem just came back.

Does anyone have an idea to what could be the cause?

I put the dump file in this zip file (The SF diagnostic tool mentioned here does not work on my computer)

A:HP8530p Regular BSOD 0x9f Driver Power State Failure

Do you have a card reader or card reader plus USB network adapter connected there?

The dump showed a symbol error there, so I could not see it properly, but I can say you that if what I am saying id true, check the card, what it contains.

Update the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet driver: from Ethernet NIC Driver Downloads | Broadcom.

Disable USB selective suspense: USB Selective Suspend - Turn On or Off

Check for any rootkit: Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller

If it is a card reader only, remove it. If it is a card reader plus network adapter, remove the memory chip from it.

Hello guys,
I tried resolving this issue by myself, but I can't figure it out. I'm getting BSOD on my new laptop. The laptop is brand new, I bought it about one month ago. It came with the default linux OS installed by the manufacturer, but I did a format and I installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
Machine specs:
Acer Aspire V3-771G 736b4G75Maii
CPU: Intel Core i7-3630QM 2.4GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.4GHz
GPU: nVidia GeForce GT 640M 2GB DDR3 memory
RAM: 1x 4GB DDR3
HDD: 750 GB Toshiba

I got BSOD 3 times, every time I was browsing the internet using Mozilla Firefox. First couple of times I was on facebook checking some pictures and the 3rd time I was on forums looking for a solution to this problem. The BSOD happened when the laptop was on high performance settings, but i can't remember if it was plugged in or not.

As i said, the laptop is 1 month old, but it came with a broken speaker so it was sent to the service where they replaced the entire front cover. They said the reason is that the speakers are glued to the front cover so it was not possible to replace only the speakers. Before sending the laptop to the Acer service I did not experienced any BSOD and I used it for like 2-3 weeks, I even did some gaming on it.
The first BSOD occurred last week and the laptop wasn't used until yesterday when it happened again and the last BSOD happened just earlier today.

I will attach the prefmon.html and the folder with the files I got from the BSOD_Windows7_Vista_v2.64_jcgriff2_.ex... Read more

Hey, my desktop computer keeps freezing here and there. I have a bad feeling it happens when working with my data HDD (not a system one). Some applications freeze and some not, I can restart, but it gets stuck when "Turning off" .. after few mins I get BSOD.

I've tried to boot up with driver Verifier and it freezes right after login screen .. no BSOD (within 30 mins).

The only thing I know from minidump is that it causes ntoskrnl.exe

Would someone help me to identify my problem?

Thanks in advance.

sptd.sys is the most well known causes of a crash in windows 7. There are some technical reason behind it is that much crash prone. It is a paer of Daemon tools, so better you uninstall Daemon Tools.

Also free up the startup.
Click on the Start button
Type ?msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
Select the ?Startup? tab.
Deselect all items other than the antivirus.

I'm getting (seemingly) random BSOD's, and according to bluescreenview it's caused by ntoskrnl.exe. Not really sure how to fix this, and what it means.

It's a relatively fresh install of windows, built PC

AMD phenom II X4
ECS a750GM-M V7.0 motherboard
G Skill memory (4 GB)
Windows 7 Pro x64
if any of that is relevant.
All windows updates are installed

Been having the occasional blue screen every few hours for the past week or two now, I've been trying to pinpoint exactly which drivers are causing the issue or if it's something more serious. It's a custom built machine and around 18 months old now, so it's not completely unlikely that some of my parts are starting to wear out. (Not overclocking)

Also, I had a hal.dll error associated with the Driver Power State Failure as well, it just didn't fit in the title.

If anyone can give me a hand with this it'd be much appreciated. I've attached the SF files as requested.

I've been experiencing this BSOD on and off for a while now, and after doing some research came across a forum post suggesting to do a memtest. I've only had time to run it for 3 passes and will try for the full 8 later in the week when I have more time.

I thought I would start a thread to make sure there are no other underlying issues that could be the cause of the BSOD. Attached are the SF Files. Thanks!

Hi MSB117.

The dedicated GPU is totally out!!! Does a restart brings it back?

Yes, a stop 0x9F can do it, based on sleep/hibernation settings and it is often seen for Optimus Technology/Switchable graphics. It is not the first instance.

As the GPU is causing continuous issue over a time, I would suggest you to contract Dell/Alienware servicing center.

Hi!

I recently got a laptop from Scan.co.uk, it's a custom build using the Clevo kit.
I have been having intermittent BSOD's with a Driver Power State Failure message at random times, I can't see a discernible pattern.

It can happen whether on the desktop, chrome or gaming but generally on the desktop during minimal use.
I can play games for around 8 hours without issue but sometimes I'll get the error straight after booting up or whilst shutting down or just doing work in chrome.

I've seen people with similar issues in this forum and have tried to make sure all my drivers are up to date but I'm missing something somewhere

Any help offered would be greatly appreciated

Hello and thanks for letting me post on this awesome forum!!!!

I am fixing a family members computer and it has stumped me. I have tried everything that I can find online related to my problem outside of reinstalling but I think it could be a hardware (power or memory) issue from what i read and a reinstall wouldnt fix it.

Driver_Power_State_Failure

I cannot trigger the BSoD of cue. Ive tried quite a bit, bringing it back from sleep, full load, no load, Skyrim, and different video cards.

I have been using Bluescreenviewer / myeventviewer to give me some incite but I couldn't find anything that would help my particular problem. So i present it to the people that know more then me, the online community. I followed the BSoD posting rules but let me know. Ill be checking back frequently.

Thanks again.

PS this computer is having raid issues. I get "Degraded NVIDIA mirror 931.51G" red flashing error for a couple seconds during boot. I dont know if this is related but BSoD's did not start at exactly the same time, but quite a bit of time after, I am told.

Hi Folks,

I really hope you can help me, I followed the instructions to create the attachement.

What I know so far is that this machine has BSOD'd several times...The last 2 times a ultilty called BlueScreenViewer.exe says it's due to "Driver power state failure" caused by: ntoskrnl.exe

I checked event viewer for the time mentioned 6/17/2012 11:29:02 pm and it says there is system error "source:Bug Check" at that exact time

For anti-virus I have MS Security Essentials. For Spyware, I have Spybot S&D.
I use with Workstation 7 as a study too so it has hosed my VMs which is very disappointing. I would really like to root cause this to continue with confidence...

I know you hear this all the time...but... please help! I don't mind collecting info and checking into things, I am just out of my element a little here.

I looked throug the results of the permon report and it seems clean for the most part.

Thanks in advance,

I apologize in advance if this is a duplicate thread to a problem already solved previously.

Two months ago, I purchased this laptop (Alienware M17x R3) and was met with strange problems some time after owning it. An error code for memory failure, refusal to boot, BSOD with the error of DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. Not sure what to do, I didn't do much of anything, except check my RAM chips for contact damage, and a swapping of positions was performed. So far, those particular error messages have not happened again, except for a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE. These happen seemingly at random, but occur more frequently when the computer is under graphics stress, such as in a Starcraft 2 match.

I have, per the posting suggestions, attached relevant files.

Thanks.

Hi all,

I was hoping to bring the 'big guns' on this forum to bear on my problem. My friend has an Asus UX32A notebook with Windows 8. To provide some back story (the meat of the problem is after this paragraph if you want to skip)...

It is brand new with hardly anything installed on it besides Norton 2013 and Office. It would freeze about 60 seconds after start up, for a good long while, and it seemed to get worse over time. I have done a LOT of things to it in the last two days - uninstalled Asus bloatware (which was also causing a black screen on startup problem), updated just about every driver and BIOS, disabled fast start up, disabled 'dynamictic' via cmd prompt, disabled all non-Windows services and then progressively enabled them to try to isolate a rogue one. I THINK I might have fixed it (in the end I left 7 services disabled - two Intel Management, Intel Dynamic application, Intel ME service, as well as Wireless PAN, Skype updater and Sony PC companion. I have no idea if it's one of these but the system seems not to freeze now and I have reached the end of my patience anyway). It might seem like too much but it was very difficult because e.g. to test the effect of one change I would have to restart, and the laptop would not restart because of the black screen issue, or would immediately freeze. It was very frustrating and I had to work from safe mode to start with, but now it seems to behave better.

But...

I have had several hang-during-reboots today, forcing ... Read more

Just a question, when the keyboard and mouse was inactive and you got the crash, was the Cyberlink editing program in use? The event log says so, and actually that program failed there.

I hope someone can help been on this problem for a week now.

I have an external synth that conects via usb My problem is when i switch off the nord the usb ports crash and any new connection is not recognised until i restart my computer which when i do hangs on the shutdown page for about 10 minutes the i get bsod with error driver state failure or bad pool header.

I can start my computer then turn on and off the nord with no issues the problem only happens when i use it in cubase 7 as a midi track even if no midi signal is sent to the nord. The problem is when i turn off the nord by the power button the driver disconnects then if i try to reconnect the nord nothing happens in the device manager all usb that are still connected work but any new connection is not seen.

I have done a fresh install of windows 7 64bit updated all drivers for everything & windows updates.

I have tried disconnecting all usb devices and still the same problem. Im not over clocking or under clocking. I have tried a different usb lead, used various usb ports, external powered usb ports.

The drivers i have installed are nord a1 midi, clavia usb 3.02 driver & clavia compostite usb driver. The latest ones.

The units was working fine until about 2 weeks ago where i was able turn the unit on and off using cubase with no problems.

Hope we can find a solution to the problem.

Hi,

I have a 2 week old HP Envy 14, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, 4GB Ram, and an ATI Radeon HD 5650 Graphics card.

Initially for the first few days the notebook worked well, no problems. This week, I encountered the dreaded BSOD. The notebook had trouble shutting down or restarting, taking 10-15 minutes or so. Upon rebooting, I get a BSOD with DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE message.

I also encountered the USB not recognizing anything that was connected to it after the computer started. If the mouse/ thumbdrive was connected before the computer booted up, it worked. If it was disconnected after booting up, and reconnected the mouse/ thumbdrive would not work. I do not get anything (no error messages or acknowledgement that anything was connected).

I checked the Device Manager, and there are no error messages.

Strange this is, these problems happen sporadically. Sometimes everything works well- USB working as it should, not issues restarting etc. Upon rebooting, the problem starts again.

I've tried updating the latest Win updates, drivers, HP bios etc but still no luck.

Please help. Thank you in advance.

Hi cabe and Welcome to SF!

First of all, hpdskflt.sys was mentioned in the crash dmp, it belongs to HP Mobile Data Protection System Disk Filter. I would download and install fresh copy of the driver, or might be uninstall it to see if it has anything to do with the crashes you've experienced.

For the mouse and thumbdrive, you might want to have their drivers installed properly, or perhaps you might want to try to have fresh re-install of USB driver by going to Device manager, under USB list you uninstall everything then restart your system. (To go to Device manager, right click on computer and choose manager)

In looking through your driver, I can see some out of date one:

Hi,

I've been browsing the site and the internet for a sollution to my problem, but can't seem te find it. There are similar postings, but they're always just a little different. So that's why i posted the new thread.

Since a couple of days i've been experiencing troubles shutting down my PC and using my USB ports. It started when i tried to log onto my work from home. It failed and the IT guy from work told me to reinstall citrix reciever. So I did and I was able to work from home. After finishing and logging out (to get back to my own PC) I found that my USB portst didn't work anymore. I tried rebooting, but af 10 minutes of "shutting down" I got a blue screen: Driver Power State Failure with code 1000009f.

I did the following:
- tried system restore - it failed with different time stamps
- update drivers - they were all up to date the system said
- Malware Bytes, CC Cleaner, MS Essentials, Hitman pro - Did them all, had some minor stuff, fixed that, problem remained.
- SFC/scannow - no problems
- Memory check - no problems

As it is now, the only update I have left is the update to WIN10. However it has tried and failed during a few of the reboots, so that doesn't seem to be and option.

After try all different kinds of things from a lot of posts I decided to refresh my windows install. Did a lot of updating and still the problem remains. Although I now found out that USB devices that are plugged in upon startup work. Once I unplug en replug them, t... Read more

So I have a pirated windows 8.1 which I have been using for more than a year now. Since the past one week my drivers ( especially the internet driver) keeps crashing and stops detecting any networks. Upon an attempted restart I get the Bsod for which I have attached the files ( All the minidumps.) I run a Dell 5521 R and have updated the drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled them too. Kindly help ASAP as I require my wifi urgently tomorrow.
Note: After restart the drivers get refreshed automatically and start working for sometime. And then the same issue. Please help.VATSAL-Tue_02_09_2016_101910_61.zip

Hello, I've been having some problems with recent random BSODs. I had the same problem several months ago, but it went away on it's own. If you could give me any ideas on what's up and how we can fix it, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!

Please uninstall Daemon Tools as it's sptd.sys driver is known to cause BSOD's on Win7 systems. Then use this free tool to ensure that the offending sptd.sys driver is removed from the system: DuplexSecure - FAQ

The BSOD's blame o2sd.sys - a component of your Memory Card Reader software by O2Micro. Please download and install this driver to see if that fixes the problem: MSI Global ? Download Center
Also, please take care of these:
OLDER DRIVERS PRESENT IN THE DUMP FILES
- Create a System Restore Point prior to doing any of this. DO NOT mess with the drivers themselves - leave the Windows\System32\drivers directory alone unless we specifically direct you to it!

- DO NOT use Windows Update or the Update Drivers function of Device Manager.

Hello,

I'm brand new to the forums. Usually I'm able to sort my own computer problems (with the help of good ol' Google). However I've been stuck with this for some time now. BSOD, Driver_power_state_failure. I can't really pin point a particular time this happens I'm afraid. I built this PC myself (my first one) about 7-8 months ago(?) and haven't really had any problems.

So far, I've reinstalled windows and updated all my drivers as recommended from many Google searches but I am still getting the same BSOD and frankly if I can't find the answer via Google I'm pretty much buggered . After reading the posting instructions I've used the diagnostic tool, so I'll attach the zip.

Any help or advice would be most welcome and appreciated.

Thanks very much guys.

Steve

A:BSOD - Driver power state failure

Vayzaroth,

Welcome to SevenForums.

Help us to help you by carrying out the following:
Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec (left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

In the System Manufacturer Block, enter:
Manufacturer and Model and
ADD the word laptop, desktop, netbook or tablet.
For example:
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the ?Other Info? block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

You will find that in Speccy, you can select info from the display
using your mouse/touchpad and then paste that info into your specs.

SIW is a marvelous program, but the free version does not offer
this capability.

Please help me in fixing this BSOD. Thanks in Advance

A:BSOD - Driver Power state failure

Hi jeyaraj.

From the incomplete data you uploaded, we can say that the BSODs are caused by the wifi network adapter.

If you want further help on how to attempt to resolve the issue, you have to upload more data and info.

Click on the button below ....

It will download the DM log collector. Right click on the application and run as administrator. It will generate a .zip file on your desktop. Upload the .zip.

Hi,

i got my notebook (MSI GE60) a month ago and since then i'm experiencing BSOD. It doesn't happen regularly. Sometimes it happens twice a day, sometimes nothing happens for 2 days .

Below i attached the dump files.

If any other info needed let me know.

A:BSOD: driver power state failure

two things, first Uninstall Daemon tools and then run this program:

Duplex secure

when you run the tool if the uninstall box is greyed out then your done If it is not then click it and let it uninstall. DO NOT click the install button It will install a Driver known to cause BSODs.

Second I notice that your video card driver (which is what the crash dumps are blaming as the problem) Is one of the drivers from the Dec 29 batch there are two things you can try, seeing if there is another update, I have heard tell that there is a beta driver that might solve the problem, or you can install an older driver and see if it fixes things. the drivers can be found here.

I've been getting a blue screen for the past week now every time my computer goes to sleep with the Driver Power State Failure message. I've done a lot of research and can see that this is likely due to a faulty driver that isn't updated, and since Windows Update has recently been doing a lot of updating I suspect this is the case. I got a bluescreen named "Driver Power State Failure" when trying to turn off my computer.

Two days ago, I got the first bluescreen on this computer with "Display Driver", I updated the driver on my graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 4850 Series) to see if it fixed the problem. After this first bluescreen it was also a problem turning on the computer: Windows doesn't automatically start, so I have had to go into the BIOS and (Ctr+Alt+Del) to restart for some reason, before I get into the boot menu. From there I have tried starting windows, failing every time, leading to Start Restore (or something, can't remember what it's called) starting, working for a good 10 minutes, restarting computer, and Windows starts loading. After about half an hour, or the time it takes before the screen goes black from inactivity, the login screen appears when I wake the computer. From this state it works normally. However, after waking it from Sleep Mode (keyboard/mouse click) I can't do anything, and after a while Windows shuts down and restarts the computer (to the screen with "Del: Enter Screen F12: Boot Menu")

It's from here the new BSoD came in: I used the power button to try and shut down Windows normally (after the inactivity problem after Sleep Mode), which took about 15-30 minutes with the "Shutting down... Please Wait"-screen, before I got this bluescreen (Driver Power State Failure).
I have now turned the computer off and restarted it. I... Read more

First let me give a huge "THANKS" for this extremely helpful forum and service. I would not have any hope of correcting this issue on my own or without giving up my machine for a few days to an IT pro to fix it, which I do not have the luxury of time to do.

Here are my details:

? Windows 7 Professional (6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601)
? x64
? Vista Premium (2009)
? Original Vista was installed already, Windows 7 upgrade came from a retailer and I installed it.
? Age of system (hardware) - 3 years
? Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? I have not re-installed, but there are multiple copies of it because I added a new HDD and cloned the original before making the new one the primary HDD.

? CPU - Intel Core2 Duo T9550 @ 2.66GHz
? Video Card - NVidia GeForce GT 130M (1GM VRAM)
? MotherBoard - Don't know
? Power Supply - 90W, brand unknown

? ASUSTek Laptop
? N90SV

Thank you again for this service. I look forward to your diagnosis.

I don't even know why this started but it did a few weeks ago. Funny, I've never had a BSOD before even though I've owned 3 or 4 computers. Anyway, this one has occurred several times and it always seems so random. It kinda seems connected to Standby or Hibernate because it usually happens after one of those two things occurs. In fact with hibernate I can usually guess that right after it comes out of hibernate, a few minutes later I will be greeted with the wonderful BSOD.

Here is the minidump. Help would be very appreciated.

A:Driver Power State Failure BSOD

Only ran the last 5 memory dumps (the 6th one was from December, so I left it out).

A couple of KB articles that relate to the errors that you're getting and the sleep/hibernate functions:

KB 975599 Stop error when you put a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 to sleep or into hibernation, or when you restart the computer: "0x9F"
KB 977186 Error message when you try to resume a Windows 7-based or a Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer from hibernation: "Stop 0x0000009F"

4 of the dump files blame atapi.sys (a Windows driver), while the 5th blames Apfiltr.sys (a component of your Alps touchpad drivers)

I'm not sure about the exact cause - but I would:
- check to see if the KB articles above apply to your system
- update your Alps touchpad drivers
- update your chipset/storage drivers
- update your graphics drivers

You can get the drivers from here: Select software and drivers HP Pavilion dv4-1225dx Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
Please uninstall the old drivers first, then install the freshly downloaded one's.

Please post back if that doesn't stop the BSOD's.

New Computer Setup. Seemingly Random BSODs several times a day.

At first it was just happening when playing games, or running AUTOCAD. But now it just crashed while watching Hulu. I tried reinstalling all drivers I could think of and even did a whole system wipe with no luck.. still BSing.

I've attached my Seven Forums .zip as instructed.

Hi,
I'm using a Asus UX32ln.
I've been having getting this BSOD for a while. However, I noticed that it only occurs some time (maybe 15-30mins) after i run an application using the dedicated GPU (Nvidia Geforce 840m). If only the integrated graphic card is used, it runs fine.
Thanks.

Hi weishou,

Welcome to the 8forums.
Unfortunately your attached zip file is empty.
Please try to upload the zip file again.
Please check the minidump folder for dump files: {windows partition}\Windows\Minidump.

Hi, and welcome to TSF.

Please navigate to c:\windows\minidump, zip up any minidumps you find and attach to your next post.

I'm not sure what the analysts do in cases like this but the BSOD.zip that you attached contains your perfmon report but its in German. Anything you can do about that from your end?

Hey!
I often get a BSOD: Driver Power State Failure. I attached my .dmp file. BlueScreenView says it's related to halmacpi.dll and ntoskrnl.exe. I hope someone knows a solution.

Security Software: ??? Make sure to install security software. I recommend either of these:Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows coupled with Malwarebytes. Do not start the free trial of Malwarebytes. Just use the standalone version, update it, and scan your computer once a week with Malwarebytes and with Microsoft Security Essentials.

Good and Free system security combination.

After installing your security software, update it, and then run full scans today with each program. Report back the results of the scans.
