Problem with file copying adversely affecting media/file sharing & WMC

Q: Problem with file copying adversely affecting media/file sharing & WMC

WMC recording/playback and media/file sharing seems to work fine until I go to copy a file between drives, where one of those drives is currently using some of its i/o bandwidth to do media. The copy hogs the i/o bandwidth, doing nasty things to the real-time needs.

How do I permanently tell Win7 x64 to do all [explorer] copies at a lower CPU and i/o (explorer.exe & system) priority and/or elevate WMC CPU & i/o (ehshell.exe?) and file/media sharing priorities a bit?

The PC is up to date on patches/drivers and should be able to prioritize obvious applications?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Right click on the process in Task Manager. There you can set the priority.

Basically I can get everything to work in my home network, just not all at once. Let me explain:
My tower/desktop is running XP sp2.
My (wireless) laptop is running Vista Sp1.
My 360 is hard wired to router
My PS3 is hard wired to router
Printer connected to tower via USB
I have had no problems setting up my PS3 and 360 for online gaming and enabling access to my tower’s HD media files. I’ve also always had internet on my laptop but I really NEED is my laptop to be able to access my tower
Here is the crux of the situation: When I turn on Windows Media Player’s “Media Sharing” (and ps3/360/laptop do all show up) it shares the media files BUT it kills my laptop internet access. Seems I can get internet back on laptop but never back any file sharing with tower and never access to my printer anymore.

**Right now the status is wireless laptop DOES have internet and access to all files on Tower.
360 and Ps3 have internet access, but not MEDIA access because I have to keep that off.....

What the *%$# am I doing wrong? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hi all I'll try and keep this short. I have 3 computers, XBOX 360 and a Wii. Everything access the net just fine. The 2 desktop machines wireless XP SP 2 and hard wired Vista with a USB printer attatched to it. These 2 can see each other, exchange files and print just fine. They both can see the wireless laptop with XP SP 2 also but neither of them can access files on it!!. Here is the kicker....the laptop can see both the other computers and even access files from both!! So why can't the other 2 access the laptop? Also the XBOX can access both desktops but not the laptop but it too can see the laptop!!!! I been fooling with this for about 4 hours now and figured I better ask for help......HELP!!!!

I've been trying to fix this problem all day! My stepfather was cruisin some internet porn when he clicked on something that he thought was legit (he's very new to computers!) and managed to really mess up the computer with a backdoor trojan (or two, or three) which I believe I have managed to get rid of. For a while I was getting fake security alerts telling me I had all these problems. I ran AVG anti-virus & spyware, AdAware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy, Trend Micro Anti Spyware Venus Spy Trap and Pest Patrol. Oh! And I also followed the instructions I found on another forum to run SmitFraud. Each seemed to get rid of a few different things. The fake security alerts have stopped and the virus scans have come back clean. I've run AdAware & Spybot each about 5 times now and its still finding the same things over and over again. I click to fix or delete them and run the scan again but its always the same. I can't get on to any Government websites at ALL because of this and I really need to do that as part of my job! Can file sharing be temporarily disabled in windows without affecting any other services. I guess what I am looking for is an "on or off " - switch" without having to disable file sharing the tradional way (rebooting etc). Is there a cmd.com option? Windows service etc...

I would just really like to know how to turn it off....lets say for 5 minutes or 10 minutes at a time and easily resume all shared folders and services.

I really hope im just not overlooking the obvious!

I have been having some trouble with File Sharing today. I have been working on setting up my media center with XBMC. All of the media and data is stored on a home server. A large percentage of the time when I try to start a movie or something, my computer will "disconnect" from the server. It will try for several seconds and then fail, or if I tell Samba (on the server) to terminate the connection. I have tried using another computer (a laptop) and it works fine, even when the trouble computer will not work. Because of this, I do not believe it is a server-sided issue. I can also browse the folders just fine until it "disconnects". The strange thing is that when this happens and until it fails, the Computer and Network folders won't load.

Additional note: I tried the FTP option in XBMC. It may or may not have worked. It seems as if it didn't on one try.

I also had a few BSODs earlier today that happened when I was using Ember Multimedia Manager and XBMC to manage the media on the server. I tried a System Restore and then a Windows Update which hasn't helped the File Sharing issues, but it has not BSOD'd since. Unfortunately, the Restore cleared the BSOD dumps, so I don't have the full dump, but I did do Google on the error beforehand and it found this which has pretty much the same error and in the same place.

Does anyone have some advice for me to try in order to fix this before I try the 24-hour process of Driver Verification suggested in before-link... Read more

The point of Windows Media Sharing is not to be some sort of P2P application, but rather like a radio station that you can tune into specific tracks. If you don't already own the music you're trying to burn then it's really not a legal practice you're getting into.

Hey guys, I'm having issues with Windows Media Player 11 sharing media. I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit. I've actually never had this problem before. For some reason, my media is not being added to the shared files on Media Player. When I add the folders that I want to share, it shows that it found like 7,000 different files, but when you look at the "added" tab, it says 0. I've been using Windows Media Player 11 to share with my Xbox 360 and PS3 for the last two years and never had this problem. I recently did a complete restore on my PC, and it hasn't worked right since. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

hey there,

In the Network and Shaing center, Network Discovery, Printer Sharing, File Sharing and Media Sharing are all disabled. (Password protected sharing is not)

I would like to enable these features, but attempting to do so yields the critical error, "The specified service does not exist as an installed service". I don't have a vista installation disc, so I can't do a repair install. Attached is the relevant Event Viewer log event (1050).

In the Services configuration window, I have ensured the following services are all enabled (as I understand they are related to network sharing)
Application Layer Gateway Service
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness (NLA)
Plug and Play
Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
Remote Access Connection Manager
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Telephony
however, the Terminal Service as referred to in the event viewer log does not seem to exist (...as the error would suggest.)

Still no luck. Any ideas?

Hello, and welcome to the Vista Forums!

Let us see what we can do! Please follow all three steps, even if Steps 1 and 2 resolve all problems.

STEP ONE (registry backup):

ERUNT - Download here
Why? This ensures we have a valid registry backup. ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to store a complete backup of your registry and restore if needed. Removing modern malware infections often requires making changes to the registry, and a corrupt registry can prevent a system from booting. Compatible with Windows NT, 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, 32 & 64-bit versions.

Download ERUNTDouble-click erunt_setup.exe to run.Follow the prompts and install using the default configuration (setup language, install location, shortcuts...).Say No to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later.
Start ERUNTChoose a location for the backup
The default location C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\[today's date] is preferred
The first two check boxes are ticked by default (System registry and Current user registry).Press OKWhen prompted, click YES to create a new folder.Progress bars will show backup status.A confirmation window will popup when complete. Click OK to close.
STEP TWO (Service fix):

Please import the registry fix attached to the bottom of this post.

I have a Windows PC with a Xbox 360 console set up as a Windows Media Center extender. To be frank, I want to be able to access only certain folders on my PC from my Xbox 360 Windows Media Center application while others are blocked out entirely. Unfortunately, I can't seem to accomplish that.

This is my situation:

I don't have any media libraries set up. I went into Tasks > Settings on Windows Media Center on both devices and made sure of that. I did at one point, but for experimentation purposes, I removed them all. My Xbox 360 is still finding and displaying files from my PC, however. Mostly, it's everything contained in the Libraries\Pictures, Libraries\Music, and Libraries\Videos file paths (which in turn are comprised of C:\Users\My Username\My ___ file paths and C:\Users\Public\Public ___ file paths). I can prevent my Xbox 360 from displaying these files by removing my personal folder locations from the libraries, but whenever I right click on a library and choose "Properties", at the bottom, the word "Shared" is grayed out with a check mark next to it, completely unselectable and apparently in a permanent shared status.

Interestingly, whenever I plug a removable storage device into my computer (specifically my E:/ drive), my Xbox 360 is instantly able to display all media contained on it. This is odd because if I click my start menu, then click "Computer", then right click my E:\ drive and select "Properties"... Read more

Hey guys

(to moderators; please move this post if you think its in the wrong section... sorry i wasnt exactly sure where to put this)

Just a quick question; the other day while watching a bit of TV i saw a Win7 advert (the "Win7 Was My Idea") but it talked about this guy, who was in spain and wanted to view his videos from his computer in the UK. And he was just using a laptop + the internet to 'stream' the content - just it didnt tell me HOW this is done, not even what the feature is called .

I would really benefit from this, as ive just brought a laptop for use at college - and would find it great if i could just 'stream' my music collection from my harddisk at home. Thing is, i know how to do this with an internet-LAN (Hamachi) - but that must mean my computer at home must be on while im streaming - and that just isnt going to happen. So this advert appealed to me, coz it seemed to show off a feature that i could use - im guessing it stores the information somewhere? Im not sure....

If anyone knows of either what this advert was advertising... or... a programme/way of being able to stream my content without using a form of 'always-on' LAN.
(before you recommend such streamers like Grooveshark & Spotify - i cant do this as the college hotspot, blocks both programs from streaming - bloody websense)

A:Windows Media File Sharing - Shown In Win7 Commercial?

There is no way to stream anything from an offline computer.
If you go with "wake up on lan" the desktop would be on all the time too (pings from your ISP etc.)
Maybe that wasn't a home computer at all but a rented server (which of course is always on)

A:Error copying file or folder; cannot copy img the directory or file cannot be created

This has caught me more than once.

The problem is a limitation on the number of files and folders allowed in the root folder of a FAT16 file system (as for a memory card) of 512. (Note, this number is reduced much further if longer file names than 8 characters are used, as most people will want to).

When transferring the files onto the card, new files will be rejected when you hit this limit.

So keep your files in separate folders, so they are not all in the root folder.

For files and folders in root it might be worth keeping your filenames under 8 characters in length so you can use the full 512 files on root folder.

My OS is Win7 Pro (32bit). I am copying large among of data/files (4.3TB) from different drives (RAID & not RAID) to another RAID storage system over a network (100MBit). I ran into file copying problems. Want to understand the cause of the problem and want to know how to fix it.

For example, I use window explorer to copy for example g:/DataMain/DataDate/DataGroup/Sub01 to x:/Archive/ DataMain/DataDate/DataGroup/Sub01 where there are a number of subfolders under /Sub01 and

g drive can be an external hard drive or a NAS drive (the sources).
x drive a NAS drive (the target).

All files being transfer are scientific files with a meta header and a raw image in the pixel part (similar in concept to jpg and other image types) and each file are either 2MB or 8MB in size. These files come in set and are group together as individual subfolders nested in the parent folder. To access these files, I need a special pixel viewer. Each subfolder being copied is about 2.3GB in size.

I observed these strange behavior:
1/ After the window explorer finished copying a subfolder from one drive to another, the folder size in a number of these subfolders in the target say g:/DataGroup/Sub01, do not match up with the corresponding folder size in the source x:/DataGroup/Sub01. In all these cases so far, the number of files & their sizes in the source directory, g:/DataGroup/Sub01, are larger than the corresponding target location x:/DataGroup/Sub01. Why?

I have a really strange problem that I have never seen before. Sometimes when I cut or copy a folder or its contents, one of two things happens. Either the files become completely worthless (i.e. the program designed to open them [WMP, WinRar, etc.] complains of an invalid file OR the folder becomes worthless and says "... is not accessible. Access is denied."

I have figured out that the files become bad if I copy and paste or cut and paste them up a "level" or down any number of "folder levels". (i.e. copy from downloads folder and paste in artist folder or album directory or in reverse)

All microsoft has is something about changing the permisions in safe mode (ID: 810881). I tried it but it didn't find anything.

It won't even let me delete the files/folders in windows. I have to use the ERASE command in dos with the /F parameter to erase the files but it won't erase the bad folders. Does anybody know how to fix this. It is REALLY anoying. Also, is there a "POWER DELETE" program that can get rid of the folders because I have a bunch of confusing folders that I cannot delete.

I realize what I have written is pretty confusing so here are some screenshots of what the error messages are...

Hi,

I have been going crazy trying to get my PC to share files with a couple of laptops.
I am running Windows 7 64 Bit and the laptops are running Windows 7 64 bit and Windows XP.

I have enabled file sharing but The Windows 7 Laptop keeps giving me an unknown error when trying to join a home group after I have typed in the password from my PC. The XP Laptop doesn't even find my PC on the network. Files sharing worked fine using my old router but I have just updated to a Virgin Media Super Hub and think it's either something to do with Anti-Virus Software blocking connections or the security setup of my Virgin Super Hub.

Jimmy PC is the laptop I am trying to share with as you can see from the picture. Are the gaps in the connection of any significance to my issue? I can share my internet connection with it with no issues but I can't share files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Who are you logged in as? Often, if you've got a personalised account, the default is 'User'. You'll probably want to be in the 'Power Users' category at least. Log in as Administrator and see if you can do it, or maybe modify your user access from Administrator, and then do it with your account.

If you're in as Administrator, then it's probably that there are some files with the name that you're copying in that directory already that are marked as Read Only, so if you really want to over-write them, right-click, properties and remove the 'read-only' flag.

Good luck and happy flying.

Hi and thanks for looking at my problem.

Due to the DVD writer on my desktop being knackered I have to copy files to an external HD then use my laptop to burn discs. A necessary inconvenience until I have spare cash to sort the problem. This normally works fine. However...

I downloaded a DVD ISO file to a drive partition but whenever I try to copy the file to the external HD I get a message saying there isn't enough space on the drive and I should delete files\run disk cleanup. Now, of course there is actually plenty of space of the ext. HD (approx. 20gb) so what is up? I've tried running disk cleanup anyway, & I've used scandisk and defragged the drive. I checked my anti-virus (AVG free) to make sure the file wasn't locked out or anything and it's not. I can copy any other files to and from both drives without any difficulty, just not this particular ISO file.

I am stumped, and as it's a large file that took an age to download I'd rather not have to go the "delete and try again" route unlesss I absolutely have to.

Please help!

I own two PCs, one Vista and one XP. Last week, the Vista machine wouldn't boot up and I traced the issue to a failing hard drive, so I ordered a new one and temporarily connected both the new and old hard drives to my XP machine so that I could migrate the data across.

Initially I'd hoped to use Driveimage XML to copy the entire drive in one go but it failed; I assume that was because of the errors on the source disk. So I simply copied all the files over with Explorer, which worked for most of them but, as I'd expected, some folders failed to copy, such as Documents and Settings, Application Data and Users.

I realised that this was because they were locked to the user account on the Vista machine and found the Knowledge Base article about taking ownership of files and folders. I followed the instructions but hit a snag: when I select properties on one of those folders, the Security tab isn't there. The Security tab appears on other folders but on the ones that failed to copy there are only tabs for General, Sharing and Customize.

Without access to the Security tab, there's no way for me to gain ownership of these folders, is there? Is there any other way for me to copy the drive that will bypass this issue?

In Vista, what happens when you enable password protected file sharing over normal file sharing?

I realize it requires credentials but what is changed on the system to require this?

If I enable just File Sharing (and not the password protected option) and have the share/NTFS permissions set for a user, connecting to the share fails as it never prompts for the username/password.

When you turn on password protected sharing you are prompted then for a username/password. What I want to know is what changes on the system to then prompt for credentials?

Same thing in reverse. If I set the 'require password for sharing' and have the group 'Everyone' in the share and NTFS permissions I am still prompted for credentials if I connect.

Thanks!

I tried the recommendations for fixing this below:

Follow these steps to grant full permissions to the folder where the files are stored: 1. Right click on the folder on the external drive and click on
properties. 2. On the property window, click Security tab.
3. Now click on Edit and then click Add.
4. Now type everyone in the box and
click OK.

5. Then check Full control check box.

6. Click on Apply and then click OK.
You may also try the below mentioned steps:
1. Click on Start. 2. Go to Control Panel. 3. Select "SOUND". 4. Double click on speakers. 5. Click on advanced tab and then uncheck enable audio enhancements.

But then I received the error message that I don't have rights to edit and add.  Why would this be?  I am the administrator?

Thanks!

Hello so I have this situation regarding my windows 8.1 machine and how it connects to my Windows Server 2012 machine.

I have my Windows server machine directly connected to the internet on one ethernet port and the other is on a 192.168.1.0 private network.

My windows 8.1 Machine is also on this private network(192.168.1.0) and whenever I attempt to take files from my Windows server machine using its Local ip address it begins a connection from the Windows Server 2012 machines WAN IP to the local even
though the established connection happened via file sharing by direct network ip address. This connection uses up all the throughput from my router causing every machine on the network to experience lag online.

I also have Windows 7 machines and this issue does not occur when taking files from the server machine as it does it through LAN.

I don't understand how the Windows 8.1 machine can even know my Server 2012 machines IP address or why its deciding to do these file transfers over the internet rather then LAN.

Here's an example since its a very difficult issue to explain.

I have a Private network (192.168.1.0) this network reaches the internet from WAN 1.1.1.2.

In this network I have machines Windows 8.1 (192.168.1.8) and Windows server 2012 (192.168.1.12)

I have a Windows Server 2012 Machine which reaches the internet directly from WAN 1.1.1.3. This machine has another nic located on the private network as stated abov... Read more

I have two computers networked via a Network Everywhere router. I have windows ME on one machine, and Windows 2K Pro on the other. When I try to set up file sharing, I cannot read the shared files from the Win 2K machine using the Win ME network neighborhood or the "map_network drive" method. The Win 2K icon is displayed on the ME computer, but when I click to select the files it gives me this message "You must supply a password to make this connection"
When I set up the Win 2K O/S I did not use a password setting so don't know why it keeps asking for one.
The internet and printer sharing work fine on the Win 2k, and I can use the Win 2K computer file sharing to read the files on the ME system.
I've tried with and without the administrator logged in, but nothing gives.
I am rather new to Win 2K so am sure I am missing somthing.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Why did you uninstall this
i have uninstalled file and print sharing on both cpu's Click to expand...

Try this:

On one computer, Right-click My Computer and choose "Map Network Drive"

Choose your drive letter and for the folder type:

//IP Address of computer you want to connect to/C$
See if that helps.

Right, I have 3 computers on my network, all connected through my router. They all have no problem connecting to the internet.

Computer 1 - Windows XP, wired to router

Computer 2 - Vista, Wireless

Computer 3 - Windows 7, Wired.

All of these are in the same workgroup, have file sharing enabled and have the network is set to 'private'. I have also disabled all firewalls, including the router.

Computer 1 and 2 can share files to each other perfectly. However, computer 3 seems to have a problem connecting to the others. When I go to the network it shows all of the computers, but cannot connect to any of them. I can open computer 3 (from computer 3's network places), but when I try to open the folders it says they 'could not be reached' - even though their on that PC! (But I can open them when finding the folder on the C:, not from network places).

Computer 3 is also listed on Computer 1 and 2's network places, but will not connect, computer 2 displays a messages about not being able to access port 445. I also did a port check on the internet (cant remember the website) and it showed all of my ports were in stealth mode.

I have only just purchased computer 3, and i understand that he upgraded from windows xp to windows 7 a few months ago, I don't know if that could possibly have anything to do with this? Also could this be caused by him not uninstalling a firewall properly?

one other thing to mention is all computers can ping each other ... Read more

This is what I have done in Windows Machine
1.On the network Sharing center - I did not create Homegroup (I believe it can still access/share files w/o creating homegroup on the network ). But just to troubleshoot, I also I tried making home group and prompted me password but still I cannot share files for both computer even when I enter the PW created from Homegroup
2. I enabled the sharing by right clicking the desktop icon/ properties and enabled sharing and advance sharing and tick/enabled checked all the permissions.
3 Tried Map network drive in windows and entered the type of network name in the MBA sharing window and browse and it prompted me again my password in windows security nothing happens.

Hi

I have a desktop and a laptop on a LAN at home, they both use a netgear ADSL for web access. I want to share the My Docs folder on the desktop with the laptop so I can work from either machine w/out having to move the files.

On the desktop I shared the C: drive and the My Docs folder in one account (no account p/word is set), all seemed normal. Both boxes are ticked for 'share this folder on the network' and 'Allow Network users to change the files'. When I go to the laptop I cannot see the shared folder or C: drive on the desktop.

If I browse and try to add a network place on the laptop I can get as far as the desktop's computer name but no further. If I try to map a drive letter I get a msg about 'you do not have access...'.

The strange thing is the reverse works, the laptop shared files can be seen on the desktop.

Very odd, usually I can set this sort of thing up ok.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Gav

Have you set the NTFS permissions in the security tab? Add "everyone" and grant them full control. Since its for a home network, file security isn't an issue here.

When I go to My Computer, click on it, then go to tools,>folder options>view . . . at the bottom of the list there should be a line that allows me to click on simple file sharing.
That line isn't there.

Where can I get it?

I'm running XP Home. My Dad's XP Pro has it. Is that the problem?

Thanks for whatever info you give me,

I am trying to share files between 2 computers in my house and am having trouble. I went on both computers in the properties-->sharing and checked the box to share the folders and entered a name for the folders and clicked ok. Now in network properties on each computer they show their own shared folder but nice vice versa. I checked to make sure that file sharing was enabled through the folder options and it is. I turned off all the firewalls. Not sure what else to do. Here is some info on what we have:

2 laptops both running Win XP home SP 2
Both have 2 firewalls turned off (Norton and Windows)
Time Warner Cable DSL
Linksys Router (WRT54G)
Both computers access the router wirelessly

I have done tihs successfully in the past and I can not recall doing anything different but we have new computers now so i need to get it going again.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Helen

A:File Sharing Problem

The basics for troubleshooting are:

1. Make sure you have the same IP scheme (e.g. 192.168.0.x).

2. Make sure you have the same Subnet Mask, Gateway, and DNS IP addresses.

3. Make sure you can ping the other computer's IP address. If this fails, just for testing, make sure you turn off XP's as well as any other firewall.

4. Make sure you can ping the other computers by name.

5. Make sure you have the same workgroup name (watch for trailing spaces)

6. For troubleshooting purposes, turn off XP's and completely uninstall any other firewall software. You can always add more complexity after you get it working.

7. With XP, make sure you have the same username and password as the person logging onto the other computers. The default setting for XP Pro is to require a password for network access.

8. More details about how to network XP can be found at:

A few weeks ago i had to reinstall my copy of vista home premium 64 because i installed new RAM and it corrupted windows. . .(wierd!)

Anyway i have a couple of problems now, both very annoying:
1) my pc does not connect to the internet when i wake it from sleep. It requires me to shut down and turn off power completely, then reboot. My previous install of windows was fine2) my pc is set up (as far as i can tell) to file share. to see other computers AND share. I cannot see other XP machines on my network, they cannot see me. Before i reinstalled it was also fine.I have tried so many different things now to rectify the problem but nothing seems to solve it

This is incredibly frustrating, any help will be muchly appreciated.
I'm a little annoyed at microsoft to be honest. I've put up with so many problems and worked aorund them, but sleeping and file sharing - two features which they used to sell vista have given me such problems recently.

I have a desktop and a laptop. Both are windows xp pro sp2 all updates. I am connected to the internet with a 2wire gateway 3800hgv-8 AT&t uverse gateway system. Laptop connects through a 2wire 802.11g wireless card. Desktop connects through ethernet. No problem connecting to the internet with either system. I am not able to share files or browse files on either system. File sharing is turned on on both systems. Using ntsf on both, Both also have "enable netbios over tcp/ip enabled. The desktop has Norton internet security and in personal firewall the ip address of the laptop is listed to allow it through. ipconfig /all for the desktop brings up
IP Adress of 192.168.1.102
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gatway 192.168.1.254
dhcp server 192.168.1.254
dns servers 192.168.1.254
for the laptop
Ip adress 192.168.1.68 and everything else is the same. The difference is that on the laptop i am showing, when i do a ipconfig /all that netbios over tcpip is disabled and it is in fact enabled in the settings for the connection on the laptop. I am not able to share files with either system. The network is setup with the standard name of msHome on both systems. What am I missing? and why would ipconfig say disabled when in fact it is enable in the advanced properties?
