Install Brother HL-1440 as network printer on Windows 7

Q: Install Brother HL-1440 as network printer on Windows 7

I cannot find a driver when trying to install the printer over my home network.Printer is installed and working on Dell XP 3100
Printer has prevously been installed via usb on Tosh Win 7
Printer & file sharing are set up on both computers
Files and printers can be seen from the Tosh that are on the Dell.
When i try to install, I get error message that a driver cannot be found. Remeber the printer is installed locally on both machines... so drivers are present.
Does anyone know how to direct to the driver? I do not have an printer install disc... installed from download.

thanks

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Install Brother HL-1440 as network printer on Windows 7

With my Brother, running the downloaded installer finds the printer already on he network. Sets it up and install the drivers. Otherwise, W& will try to use it's geneic WSD, which is not bidirectional.
I did have a problem that I resolved by completely uninstalling and re-running the latest installer from Brother's website. Hope that helps.

I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit on my desktop. I have installed my Brother HL-1440 with no problems. My problem occurs when I try and add the printer as a shared printer to my father's desktop that is running XP. File sharing works between both computers with no problem. The XP box sees the printer and when I tell it to add it as a shared printer I get a message saying the printer server doesn't have the correct drivers installed. I click ok and go to the next screen where I try and point the OS to the correct drivers. I have downloaded the XP drivers from Brother's website. When I try and manually direct the OS to them I get a message saying the .INF is wrong.

My networking buddy has told me that this same problem occured for him back with NT and win98 and that the fix was installing the 98 drivers on the NT box. I have researched adding drivers into Vista's driver store file but am confused about that whole thing, plus I'm not positive that will fix this issue. I have looked at

Michael Niehaus' Windows and Office deployment ramblings : Windows Vista driver management

Is the solution present on one of these pages and if so can someone simplify it for me.

I have a Brother HL-1440 printer that is telling me it needs a new drum.

My question--- The copy quality is still great (No streaks, etc.) Is it OK to run it until the copy quality gets bad or is there some other reason to change the drum??

I am using it with Windows XP- home (I doubt that has any bearing on this- but just in case)

Your input would be appreciated---
letchworth

A:Solved: Brother HL-1440 printer---- question?

OK to use until quality suffers.

Personally I could never get professional quality printing from more than 3 toners without the drums failing.

Thats when I went to a laser that includes a drum with the toner.

I have a Brother HL-1440 connected by USB to a new computer running Windows 7 (64-bit). The new computer is connected by an Ethernet cable to a wireless router that in turn is connected (wirelessly) to another computer running Windows XP. I am already able to share files between the two computers, and would like the XP computer to be able to share the HL-1440 connected to the Windows 7 computer.

I have no problem printing from the Windows 7 computer to the HL-1440 directly - Windows 7 found the driver automatically. However, when I go to the XP computer, and try to add the HL-1440 as a new printer, I get a popup stating that "The other [Windows 7] computer does not contain the correct printer driver .....". I then ask it to search for the correct printer driver, and another popup states that "The .INF file is missing ...."

I have tried re-installing the original HL-1440 driver on my Windows 7 computer, but that did not have any apparent effect.

Any suggestions?

Hi, I cannot re-install my brother printer HL2170W. I have seen here a post that had the link to the website for the latest drivers...went there and when i unzip the file there is no setup file or even an executable file that gets zipped. Am i missing something?

Prior to this, I ran the install of the latest drivers (I think) from the website for 64 bit vista. Then it went through the installation and completed but the printer does not show up on the control panel. So, that is why I tried to follow the instructions posted here.

Thanks

I have my Brother HL 1440 printer installed on a USB port and cannot get it to do manual duplex (2 sided) printing. The driver presents, under Properties/Advanced/AB, the option to do so but when I check the box for manual duplex it does not do so. As far as I know I have the correct driver for Win 7 64bit.

Has anyone experienced this or have a idea where I might find the solution? Brother offers no solution.

Thank you.

Just for your information, I have been unable to get the drivers to consistently work with Vista 32 or 64. I have gotten them to work with 64 at times, but I changed the configuration of my network, and they quit and I have not been able to figure out why. I am once again, after the lapse of several months, trying for a solution. I saw your post and I wanted you to know that it is not something specifically about Windows 7. I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit version and the install of the Brother DCP 7065DN is causing me grief.

The copy and scan functions are operable, but not the printer function.

I am logged in as Administrator in Vista.

Printing a test page returns an "access is denied" message.

So I try to open as administrator and trying the Print test page, returns message "Printer not installed"

I have tried the XP compatibility mode as well as XP and Win7 printer drivers but no success.

I have had no problem installed the printer on another hard drive with Win 7

Brother says my Vista is corrupted and contact support.microsoft.com . How nice, Doing a web search, it seems that Brother definitely has compatibility issues with Vista judging on all the posts. Unfortunately I see few solutions.

Any takers out there?

Im not one to use faxes so i didnt try that but im assuming the printer alone is the issue so any tips on how to fix it?

Here I go again. I asked this before and the problem was solved. However I installed a new and upgraded mobo and cpu. The printer will not install now. For general safety I reinstalled W10 and all my programs. I downloaded and ran the Brother drivers setup.exe. All I get is "machine not found". This is so even though after running setup.exe the Brother mfc-j895dw printer appears in Devices and Printers each time I attempt the install though I remove that device each time. I even tried the previously failed cd install just in case but it still fails. Setup.exe runs and decompresses all the files into a folder Install which contains setup.exe. I deleted that folder and the driver download and tried running setup several times to no avail. I deleted the downloaded file, the Install folder, and the printer from Devices and Printers before attempting each reinstall. I disconnect the Brother from everything before starting setup and only reconnect it when installation says to reconnect. I also set the printer as the default printer each time to no avail.

Hi There,
I am having problems configuring my Brother MFC-7860DW printer on my home network.
I have connected the printer via ethernet to my home wireless router. I assumed it would pick up a DHCP address from my router but it didn't. When I ran a configuration page, it gave me a 169.x.x.x address. So I manually configured a static IP with the appropriate subnet mask and tried to print from my vista printer, however it failed to print. I tried to ping the printer with the assigned static IP and it said "destination host unreachable". I've re-set printer and turned it off/on and also rebooted the wireless router. Still same thing. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the printer itself? I also have tested the ethernet cable with a laptop and it is working. I even tried adding a static IP reservation in the web admin page of the wireless router.
I'm kinda stuck. Any ideas? Pls help.

When I hit the "Ok" button, the installer hangs and I have to end task it.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this?

I am running into a problem trying to install a Brother QL-800 label printer on a Dell Desktop running 64 Bit Windows 8.1 Professional. The driver installer was downloaded directly from the Brother website Support download page for that model. The installation procedure took a while and completed without any kind of failure or warnings.

The previously installed P-Touch labeling software could not find a compatible label printer and chose the Windows default networked laser printer as the output device. The QL-800 was powered up and connected by a USB cable to the computer before launching the P-Touch software. When I checked the Windows Devices & Printers control panel, the QL-800 was listed as a storage device under Devices instead of under Printers. I removed the device and ran the Brother cleanup utility to remove the drivers and then repeated the installation procedure with the same results.

The user had been using the P-Touch software with an older QL-550 label printer that was starting to have mechanical problems but otherwise was working OK with the P-Touch software. It was not connected to the computer when I removed it from the Windows printer list before I installed the QL-800 drivers. The software was able to immediately recognize and use the QL-550 when the USB cable was moved from the QL-800 to the QL-550.

What do I need to do to make the QL-800 install as a printer? I am leary of uninstalling the QL-550 drivers as the user does need to print labels on a r... Read more

The printer is hooked up through the router via ethernet cable, in a normal port (no special network printer port on router, not the internet connection port, ordinary port where additional computers hooked up to network go)

I am doing the configuration (changing IP addresses, installing the software as indicated by the user's guide) on one computer that is connected to the router via cable

The OS of the configuring computer is WinXP 64 Bit (and i hope the Win64 Bit is not a problem because i bought the printer knowing it was "fully compatible with WinXP64" and it would mess up my whole office if it is incompatible

I did the installation and followed the steps, i changed the IP of the printer and the IP in the installation so that they have the same IP, when the software asked, I entered the same DNS my computer uses to connect to the router, and for "gateway", i entered what I put for my computer's "default gateway"

after all that, i hit next and it says it was successful

the diagnostic program which automatically runs on reboot after installation says that the printer is not connected to the network/computer/printer is offline/etc

thanks for any help you guys could give

Hi,

Hope this is the correct Forum for Printer questions.
Is it ?

Have a 5 yr old Brother printer (HL-2140) which uses a TN-360 ink Cartridge.

A Brother branded "high yield" TN-360 goes for about $ 50. Wow.

I see that Amazon carries several other non Brother, but supposedly compatible
TN-360 cartridges by mfg. names I've never heard of.

Much, much cheaper.
Am willing to try one, but am very uncertain which of the brands to go with.

Anyone have any experience with non Brother labeled "compatible" cartridges ?
Any good ?
Which Brand should I try, perhaps ?

Note: It's almost worth buying a brand new Brother printer instead !

Thought on ?

Thanks,
Bob

A:Brother Printer and Non-Brother Branded Ink Cartridges ?

Hi, again:

You will likely find that the answer to this question falls into 2 major camps:
Only use OEM, branded ink from the printer manufacturer (or a trusted, high-volume, reputable seller), OR
It's perfectly fine to use knockoff, refurb, non-branded
I don't know anything about Brother, as I have been using HP printers/all-in-ones since the days of the printing press.

No matter which brand, in the printer industry, the ink/toner is how the manufacturer makes its money, not on the hardware.

There are many factors in the risk:benefit calculation, such as budget, volume of printing needs, need for optimal performance, etc.

My own personal experience for relatively heavy home/home office use is that it is not worth skimping on the cost of discounted ink/toner.
There can be serious quality issues with the cheap stuff (even branded, refurbished ones).
And there can be quality issues even when buying "new" OEM ink/toner from 3rd-party sites or even brick and mortar big box stores (the items may be legit, but they are stale).
If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.
HP has a terrific ink/toner program -- 2 or 3 mouse clicks and I have the products on my doorstep 1 or 2 business days later, with free shipping. The price is highly competitive, and the ink/toner is always fresh and high-quality. This works very well for me.

Your mileage may vary, of course....
Cheers, MM

I just set up my new Dell with Windows 7. I connected it to my Brother MFC-8840D printer with a USB connection. Windows 7 recognized the printer and set it as default. But I cannot print anything. I called Brother, and the person said that the proper driver was in the computer. However, she then sent me an email which indicated that Brother does not offer a driver for this unit with Windows 7, but that an appropriate driver can be found on Windows Update. I had no success going to Windows Update. Does anyone have an idea (short of having to buy a new printer)?

Thanks.

A:Windows 7 and Drivers for a Brother Printer

I'd try to get clarification from the tech support person about getting a working driver via Windows Update, and why it didn't work for you.

If Brother has a Vista driver try that.

Or try the Vista or XP driver using the Troubleshoot Compatibility option (assuming you have a self-installing executable right click on it to get that option). You can spend the better part of an afternoon with the "recommended" settings, and with XP or Vista with various service pack levels. Oh, and sometimes this works. Start reading from post # 18 in this thread to see how this technique worked for some USB wireless adapters.

Hi and welcome!
I found these steps from Brother's support section of their website.

1. Turn off your Brother machine. Wait a few seconds, then turn it on again.
Wait at least three minutes for the machine to join the network.
If the issue continues, go to STEP 2.

2. Use the Network Connection Repair Tool to fix the Brother machine's network settings. It will assign the correct IP address and the Subnet Mask.
> Click here to see how to use the Network Connection Repair Tool
If the issue continues, go to STEP 3.

3. Check your machine's wireless status by printing the WLAN report.
> Click here to check the wireless status on the WLAN report.

If your WLAN report is stating "Connection OK", although you can not print, refer to "Check the wireless status on the WLAN report" and check "Connection: OK"

I've installed a Brother HL-1240 laser printer on a new Windows 8 computer. Brother says that Windows has built in the driver for this printer. Sure enough, the printer appears on my device list. However, the printer preferences says that the maximum resolution is 300 dpi. The specs for the printer clearly state a max resolution of 600 dpi.

When I used the printer on an XP computer I got 600 dpi.

Has anyone else run into the problem of the Windows 8 printer drive not allowing the maximum printer resolution?

Any solution? I chatted with Brother support and they said that since Windows created the drive that there was nothing Brother could do.

BTW - The printer functions in Windows 8, it just can't supply the max resolution so many of my pdf prints look pixelated.

Just my two cents but I seriously doubt that the Win 8 developers are in the driver development business for all 3rd party hardware. Just because it is inherently available via Windows 8 installation methods does not mean that it was created by the Windows 8 developers. With that said, I would be going back to Brother support and tell them that "they" made a mistake when they submitted that Win 8 driver for inclusion in the Win 8 operating system. Specifically, they forgot (or knowingly) did not include the 600 DPI option. And, while you are at it, ask them if there might be an alternative driver (w/600 DPI) available that might work for your specific printer. Good luck.

I've just had a new PC built for me, for the first time rather than build it myself I aid a local shop, and it's a pretty nice machine. They got windows up and running, when I got it back and lugged it in I don't even remember it asking about whether my network was home, work or public (I may be mistaken about that)

A lot of the networking is fine, by adding 'everyone' to the share, and joining the same homegroup as my laptop, I managed to get each to see their desktops, so I'm up and running with most of my workflow. But there's a couple of things not quite right about the network:

I've got a Xerox Phaser 60 network printer. It's got a simple 'walk-up' installer where you get the windows software into listening mode and then on the printer's menu initiate the connection. This doesn't find the printer. Even choosing the manual option of inputting the ip won't find it. So I've had to connect it with USB, not the end of the world, but shows that something's not right.

I have a lot of media on a dlna server in my home. Setting up kodi to find it, the SMB devices didn't show the host. Though, manually typing the IP in this case did find it. Lucky I knew the IP. Weird

And trying to FTP to my website fails too. It says "EAI_FAIL - Nonrecoverable failure in name resolution" Yet the same settings on my laptop (imported from the laptop) connects fine.

Surely there's something not quite right. Is there a way to reset all the network connection settings to default 'out of... Read more

OK...here's a good one. I know I'm missing one setting, one trick.

Installed my new SSD yesterday, clean install 7 pro x64.

I have two printers at home, both of which I used flawlessly before this new SSD and fresh install.

I am the administrator of the machine and turn off UAC.
I originally moved the temp and tmp directories to a second hdd, and since moved them back to the ssd. (Read that it that fixed it somewhere)

Both printers are networked.
One is an old trusty HP 4050N connected via LPT to a DLink DP300U print server.
Add it as a local TCP/IP printer, change the queue settings to match the printer settings, and add the HP 4050 driver. I get an error message (That I've researched over and over) I'm attaching it later.

Second is an HP Photosmart Plus (209a) that I have the latest drivers for, and is attached wirelessly. The HP bloatware/software sees it, detects it...but right before it adds it, it stops...with the same error message.

I edited the local security policy to enable the local administrator account status (I was an administrator before this).

Both printers give me the same error message. As said...they worked just fine on the install prior.

Here's the error message:

Windows 7 Professional

Haven't had the need to use my printer in a couple of weeks, so I don't know when the problem started. It is a Brother HL-2270DW that has been problem free. There are tests that can be tried using the printer itself and it says it has a good connection and should be functioning.

Nevertheless, when I click on print, the available choices are Microsoft XPS Document writer and Fax; the Brother unit is not included as an option. When I enter the control panel and look at the devices, my printer is mentioned with a Troubleshooting necessary indicated, but letting the troubleshooter do its job does not provice any suitable result.

I returned to a restore point the 23 of this month, but am not wanting to go much further back, because except for the printer problem, my computer is working great, and I don't want to remove necessary updates, etc. that might create a whole new problem.

I have shut down for half minute and restarted the printer to see if it might provide a benefit, but when I restart the printer, it's self trouble shooting feature suggest that the unit is both attached and working properly. Toner is over 90% remaining. BTW it is wifi and my router seems to be working perfectly. Drivers are latest.

Thanks for any input!

A:Printer problem needs guru. Looks like Windows not Brother problem.

Do you have it setup as a wireless printer? If so, reinstall the printer driver but use a USB cable initially.
Once that is working then setup wireless.

If you don't have the CD or can't find it, the drive is available from the Brother web site (I have the same printer).

Hi All!
I have a Brother P-Touch PC label printer and I am using Windows 7 32 bit Ultimate. Brother does not have a driver for Windows 7 and it appears neither does Microsoft. Since I have a considerable stock of label cartridges I would love to continue to use this printer. Any ideas on how to make the printer work again?

Thanks in advance, Ed

Hi again...

I have a Brother All In One which was working fine in Windows 7 but is now contstantly showing up as "offline" in the print queue. I have a home network with my "main" machine my desktop running Win 7. I have 2 other laptops - one is a HP with Vista, and the other is a Macbook Pro. I have been able to print today from the laptops, but the desktop (Win 7) tells me that the machine is offline. To be clear, the machine is on, and is connected to my network.

Windows 7 is being stubborn and is not recognizing that it's online. I've printed to it in the past and now it's not cooperating (when I need it to, of course).

Help.

Did you try uninstalling/reinstalling the print driver?

Hi everyone,

A few months ago I bought a new laptop (Compaq Presario C700, nothing special), which brought me my first (sometimes frustrating) experiences with Windows Vista. I now want to use a printer my uncle gave me; a Brother HL - 1030 Laser Printer.

Now my problem: I can't install proper driver software.
I have the software, but it won't install. It says that NT 4.0 drivers are blocked by an enabled policy on my computer. I've found something on that on this forum (http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/766895-solved-nt-4-0-driver.html) but when I enter a port name, it says: 'the network path was not found.'

I've also searched on the Brother site for help, but they don't have any driver support for Windows Vista and the only service program available for download is to uninstall driver software

I'm a little nooby, but I put in effort to try and solve this.
Please help me do this and get a nice drawing I made as a reward

Greets,

Guus Evers, Breda, Holland.

I tried printing a PDF document from Windows 8 PDF reader but continually got the following message. The printer drivers are installed and I can print from both notepad and Microsoft Word making it strange that I cannot do the same from the PDF reader (built into Win8). Any suggestions will be welcome.
