Disk access to Virtual Store folder for no reason?

Q: Disk access to Virtual Store folder for no reason?

Hi everyone. I've just got a quick question that's been bothering me for a while. Recently I've noticed some bizarre activity in Win 7 Professional. I run ESET NOD32 v4, and it shows a 'current activity' readout that displays whatever file is being scanned, and thus currently being accessed by the OS or a program. I was watching it while my system was idle, and suddenly it started to scan through the Virtual Store directory. Specifically, it starting to scan through all of my old IM logs from a legacy IM client (Trillian). Now, I haven't even opened that IM client in a week, and the logs it was scanning were over three months old and haven't been altered since.

I ran a scan with NOD 32 v4, Windows Defender, and MalwareBytes antimalware. All of these came back clean with no infections/intrusions detected... But I can't think of any reason why three-month old files from a program that hasn't been run in a week would be accessed at all, other than a rootkit virus or something hidden poking through my personal correspondence.

Is there some reason that Win 7 might be accessing these file for some other purpose? I don't have automatic backups set up, and it looked pretty specific that the disk activity leafed through that specific folder and then stopped dead without looking at anything else.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Disk access to Virtual Store folder for no reason?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I want to take a look at my Virtual Store folder, but do not find one in this path c:\users\<username>\Appdata\local\Virtual Store\

Is there something else I need to do in order to see this directory?

I am currently getting used to using Vista Ultimate and have so far not had any major problems with the OS. However I recently saved some pictures into a folder that Icreated in the Program Files folder, (which I always did in XP), but now I cannot locate the files anywhere on my computer.
I have read elsewhere that they might be stored in the Virtual stores folder under my user account but I cannot find it anywhere. I am slightly distressed by this as I ned to find the pictures.
I am the only user on the PC so I would assume that I have full privilidges but I am not sure how I can check that either
If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

I was in Disk Management and was shrinking my disk C: where Windows 7 is located, to make room for another operating system. The window seemed as if it crashed so I closed it. It was a mistake. I opened it back up and now it's stuck at "Connecting to Virtual Disk Service". Partitions don't show up.

I can't dare to shut down the PC because I'm scared that it will never open because I have played with its consistency by stopping a partitioning process. I can't run CHKDSK because Windows is running on it.

Do you think the testdisk command of Linux Terminal will work? I once recreated partition tables flawlessly with it.

And how deep poop am I in, right now? The PC is working but I just can't guarantee the next boot.

Best regards.

UPDATE: I downloaded Partition Wizard and everything seems ok in there. Looks as if it was never partitioned at all. There's no unallocated space unlike what I thought.

Hello. I have an HP Touchsmart 15 that I bought in 2014. It is a 64-bit Windows 8.1 machine but has been upgraded to Windows 10. I have been/am being compromised by some sore of remote access tool. The webcam and microphone are being accessed, I find all sorts of documents on my machine with int'l characters, and there is a virtual X: BOOT drive that is either the problem itself, or is part of the problem along with a corrupt BIOS. I have tried flashing the BIOS then immediately running DBAN and re-installing Windows from commercial optical media, but this keeps coming back. Hi there,
I've just installed a virtual machine (running XP Pro) onto my Vista machine. The Vista machine has a USB external hard drive attached. When trying to access the data on this hard drive from within the virtual machine (via the bridged network link between the virtual machine and the host) it is incredibly slow. I've tried moving the USB hard drive to another PC on the network (running XP Pro) and accessing it from the XP Pro virtual machine on the first PC, and this works fine. I'd be very grateful for any help or ideas!

So I was browsing /g/ and I noticed a thread saying that uBlock, a multi-purpose blocker for Chromium and Firefox-based browsers was taken down from the Chrome Web Store. Since it was on /g/, I didn't really believe it at first, so I Googled around to find more information and found a post on reddit that redirected to the GitHub page of the project, with the developer announcing the news and that he had no idea of why it happened. On top of that, Google seems to be dodging the question.Link to the GitHub discussion: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/issues/50The extension was taken down because they says that it "doesn't respect the policies" for the Chrome Web Store. Some users advance that they took it down, because the developer of uBlock didn't want to create a "white list" of ads that would be displayed despite uBlock being enabled, like other Adblockers do/did.I know that a lot of people here uses uBlock, since it blocks pretty much everything, it's really efficient, takes very little resources and allows you to use only one extension to do the job of 2-3 of them. What's your take on that? What do you think happened and do you think that the application will be put back in the store? On a side note, here's what you get when you try to access uBlock on the Chrome Web Store.

Hi all - first time posting, thanks in advance for your assistance. I'm having difficulty where an IDE i'm using (Eclipse), which is located in c:/Program Files, is not saving files to this location, which I need updated real time since that is the location I have my local environment set to use for hosting local websites via Apache. Everytime I save a file, it goes to C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\<program> and doesn't appear to replicate back to c:/program files. Can someone give me more insight into this 'feature' and how I can combat it in order to have my files updated on c:/program files? Is this an application setting or at the OS level? Is this storage technique limited to Program Files only ?

Thank you for the education, I sincerely appreciate it.

A:Virtual Store

Hi - possibly not very clear in my issue. Instead, can someone explain to me how virtual store works and what the MS methodology is? To re-mediate my situation, I'm likely going to move my App Data off of c: or c:/Program Files to avoid some of the restrictions.

Thanks in advance for taking the time.

While playing around with FreeZip I unzipped a file and it didn't appear where it should have. I started a search in Explorer and found it in the following location:

C:\Users\Deke\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\

There is not a lot of stuff in there but I am wondering what decides what goes there and is it alright to delete something out of there you wouldn't want laying around like passwords.

A:Virtual Store

I finally found the following and I guess I will leave this info alone as it sounds necessary to run some older programs on Vista.

This also makes me understand why when I uninstalled a program and reinstalled it some of the previously stored info showed up on the new installation as it is written in virtual store because that program couldn't write it to the restricted program files. That is almost to much for my old brain to comprehend.

If you just want to try the different flavours of OS then you could be right, a VM is the method I’d choose. You’ve already recognized that there are the limitations of the hardware. Beyond performance issues, you may want to consider issues of peripheral devices as the VM is using the host ‘adaptors’.

I have a windows vista, home premium, running on a HP G7000 laptop. A few days ago, I recently discovered that out of 132 or so GB, I only had 500MB left! Anyway, I deleted a few video files and got it back up to 22.2GB, however during defrag, it moved between 23GB and 18GB, and I didn't save any work, all it was doing was defrag.

Since defrag, it's been pretty stable at 22GB left of space, however today I discovered that in AppData > Local there was a folder named 'VirtualStore' containing around 38GB of files. Inside VirtualStore are two folders, one named 'Program Files' and the other called 'Windows'. Now, inside Programm Files are all the programms I have on my system (like the original Programm Files) and inside Windows is just stuff I don't really understand.

Ok, so, is it possible that this VirtualStore is a virus which has copied all of my programm files etc. into a new folder? And is it ok to delete the folder, 'Virtual Store'?

Why did it put a lock on my file when I cut it and pasted it ? Why does photoshop save it in C:\ and see it their and thinks it there but in reality windows did not put it there.

I just installed windows 8.1 pro on an MSI z97 pc mate motherboard with I5 3.3 ghz processor, 16 gb ddr3 1600 MHz ram, with embedded realtek pcie gbe NIC. I checked and found that hardware virtualization is enabled by default in the BIOS.

I tried to set up a virtual switch using the latest bios and drivers from MSI. I created a virtual switch choosing the external option and the share with host OS option. I then connected to the VM. No network connectivity on VM but host still worked.

I then used autopatcher to update windows 8.1 on the vm. I removed and reinstalled the virtual switch choosing external option and share with host OS option. Same conditions occurred.
And then I installed the latest NIC driver. Same problem - media disconnected.

I tried this process with the latest driver from the realtek website which was a couple years more up to date. I had such high hopes! Same problem.

I then used msconfig to prevent all non-Microsoft services from starting and rebooted. I removed and recreated the switch and I was still hoping for success. Same exact conditions occurred.

These are the conditions that occur whenever an external switch with host os sharing enabled is installed in between all of these troubleshooting steps. It looks exactly the same every time...

Hi Everyone,

I've read a lot about the "virtues" of the W7 Virtual Store methodology, etc. However, I have a key application that cannot work if files are not saved in its native folder. So W7 saving everything in the virtual store is a non-viable state of affairs for me.

Does anyone know how to stop this happening? I know it can be done because someone set my machine up to stop this happening when new (for this exact reason). However, it seems that adding the service pack 1 has restored the W7 default to save everything in the virtual store.

Learning to live with virtual store is NOT an option - I need to stop these files being saved there.

Thank you in advance for any help with this.

A:How do I stop W7 from saving files in the Virtual Store?

Simple answer: Disable UAC or change the permission setting for the respective program's folder to "Authenticated Users: F, Users: F"

Why you shouldn't do it:
Virtual Store is for compatibilty. I don't believe you when you say "it cannot work if files are not saved in its native folder." Why? Because your program cannot tell the difference between its native folder and Virtual Store. The program sees the files in VirtualStore as if they were in its native Program Files folder. If its a more intrusive program, as if they were in the /Windows folder.

That's the simple answer/s. If you want more detail, see

Windows Vista File and Registry Virtualisation - Richard's Weblog - Site Home - TechNet Blogs
New UAC Technologies for Windows Vista

Yes, your registry has a VirtualStore too. Never noticed your program getting bothered with it? Because you probably didn't know it existed.

Hey Guys,
Im rebuilding someones laptop and since they are always managing to break it im installing quite a bit of security so they couldn't break it even if they wanted to.

I have a problem though, im going to hide the C:\ so they dont decide to have some fun with the windows directory or something. Now by hide, i dont mean the attribute im actually going to make the drive invisible to them and it will also prevent direct access. They can still use the things on there, they just cant open it themselves. For example typing "C:\windows\cmd.exe" into an IE bar will be disallowed but typing cmd into the start menu will be allowed.

However, my problem is that the user folder is on the C:\. Now i noticed in my school they create a separate drive for personal files and that drive is not hidden. I want to do that, but i dont know how to;

I am having an issue with a modified file being moved to 'C:\Users\[me]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\[application name]' directory during an uninstall. I do not understand why this is happening and would appreciate anyone being able to enlighten me.

The *actual* issue is that when I install my app again, this "removed" file is being accessed by my app rather than the newly installed file, even though the path within my app is correctly addressing the new file, and thus am seeing data that shouldn't exist.

Any advice on how to make a modified file actually delete during an uninstall?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe I just mis-understood what the writer stated. Does anyone know if the registry keys for the virtual store should automatically be deleted? Thank You!

Have you done anything with the utility lately like mount a .vhd or .xvhd file? Is there anything which might be corrupted and causes problems for the Utility with it tries to scan the drives?

Windows will typically start a wizard to transfer your pictures from your phone to your computer. There is a checkbox to delete the pictures off the phone when the transfer is done. It sounds to me like that is what you did, and those pictures may be somewhere else on your computer.

Also, did you check your phone to verify the pictures are gone? The connection Between your computer and the phone may have been broken, but the pictures would still be there.

I've used this PC constantly several years. This problem only started about 5 weeks ago, and happens many times a day now. If you have any ideas on fixing it, let me know.

Problem: I hear a "thunk" every 1 to 2 seconds, forever. It sounds like the hard drive going from one ring to another far-away one. It's not normal disk activity, which is a bunch of little sounds. This is dead quiet except for the repeating "thunk". Too irritating to ignore, so I turn off the PC (many times a day).

More details:

It happens when I'm not doing anything using the drive - times when it would be quiet, until last month.

Running Win7 home premium 64bit.

The drive is only 1% fragmented, gets auto-defragged every week.

I stop it by putting the PC into Sleep - but only if I wait 20 seconds before waking it. If I restart within 5 seconds, it keeps going. Also, Sleep seems to take a lot longer than in the past (maybe subjective).

Once quiet, it seems to only start again if I have some website open. Not every site, but many of them. I thought it might be a new update of Firefox, so went back to 30.0 - no help.

Once it is going, closing all browsers (and every other program) doesn't stop it happening. Only turning off the PC.

Disabling net access (I pull out the wifi, which is a USB thing) doesn't stop it once it's going.

I've turned off DropBox and anything else I could identify that runs in the background. But of course there are dozens of Services.

A:disk running for no reason

First off you should not be able to hear your hard drive work. The amount of noise a good hard drive makes will be covered up by other things like fans running in your system.

You could check things like auto update of anything on your computer and check scheduling to see if anything is scheduled to run.

To me defragging once a week is to often. Windows 7 doesn't fragment much. When I used hard drives I would check how much fragmentation their was and if it was 10 % or less I didn't run defrag. Defraging is hard work for a hard drive. If it's a big drive it could take forever.

You can also use msconfig/Startup and NoN Microsoft Services and see what is running in the background that doesn't need to be.
Very little needs to be running in the background in most cases.

The next thing that comes to mind is a infection like a botnet running on your system.

hii, i have an issue with my c: drive, i first had around 700 MB free, and the low space popped up and i was wondering why is that, i have free space, so i went and checked my c: drive, i only had around 100 MB, so i quickly went into control panel and add/remove applications and removed som unwanted applications, then it went back to around 700 MB, then after a bit, again it happened, so i went and checked and noticed that my free space is reducing by the minute, and i just waited till it reach it max and see what will happen next, when it reaches less and less, then it jumped back to 1.4 GB free space, and same thing still happens, it keeps getting lower and lower, its just so annoying, here is my HJT log:

I have a new music software that I need to install on my PC, windows xp SP3. The PC is not recognising the disk, and yet, a computer which is identicle recognised it a few days ago and a vista will recognise it right now??? Is there a file missing from my PC??

The software is called Cubase Le4.

Hope someone can help...can't use my recording equipment until it works

A:XP won't recognise disk - no reason!

The easiest way to rule the CD/DVD player out of the equation is to go into the BIOS and set the drive first in the boot order. Then try a bootable disk. If it works, then you now the drive is OK and it's a setting in the computer

After putting my computer to hibernate and powering it back on, my disk usage would stay at 100%. All the transfer speeds are around 0.1 mb/s and I'm not sure what could be causing the 100% disk usage.

Another thing is that it windows notifies me to scan my hard drive for errors, which I have done, but this keeps repeatedly happening.

Is there any fix to this problem?

A:100% disk usage for no reason?

I think u will have to run a system scan from the cmd. try sfc /scannow
and press enter [ as an admin ]
and please tell us about your system specs!
especially abt your ram

or if nothing works try a system repair with ur windows disc

I open OE6 and all my folders are missing. They are definitely in their correct store folder place, but not loading. I tried importing them, but the wizard says the files in that store directory are already open and so it can't load them.

I copied the folder and renamed it and tried importing it that way, but the same thing happens - none of my folders appear in OE. If it had worked, I would have then just changed my store folder location to the new folder and been fine.

How it occurred: I had the store folder on D partition (I learned a long time ago that I didn't like having my email on my C partition - awful messes can occur if Windows crashes) and it was starting to get a little crowded in there, so I moved what I thought was another older backup store folder to another partition. Ack! I discovered that I moved the wrong one...by opening OE and seeing that all my folders were missing. I checked into this and found that I had moved the wrong folder! Okay, it didn't seem that was so hard to correct...I copied it, made sure it had the original name, and moved the copy back into D, and renamed the backup and left it in the other partition. BUT the dbx files still didn't load in OE. I was very surprised.

So the deal is, once I moved that folder (thinking it was a backup) and opened OE and the folders/files weren't there, I have been unable to get them back, even though the store folder is in its proper directory again. I opened the folder from Run ... Read more

My husband opened our outlook express 6 email client and one of his folder which contained numerous subfolders is missing. Everything else is still there...just one missing folder.

I checked the store folder and the dbx file is still there. I recreated the file in outlook express and now all the emails in the main folder have appeared, but no subfolders, eventhough they all have dbx files.

I tried renaming folders.dbx to folders.old to recreate the folders, but it took all the subfolders in any folder and moved them up in the cascade so they became main folders. This is not a feasible solution as we had things very organized in sub- and subsub folders. So, I used the back up folder I created before renaming the folder.dbx file to correct that, but it brought me back to the same place of having all the missing sub folders.

Please help! We really need those emails and have now learned our lesson about storing too much critical info in email. We will start an archive file once we solve this issue!

Appreciate some assistance.

In Outlook Express Tools>Options>Maintenance Tab, there is a Store Folder button. Pressing the Store Folder button goes to an address such as:
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{9D2E2800-5A11-11D6-8A36-E573C96B8C40}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

At this address, the following files are found:
Deleted Items.dbx
Sent Items.dbx

If one of these .dbx files is deleted, how can it be reinstated?

The reason for the question is the following: a friend has MSN Explorer 7 installed on the PC, and with it, web based email. The web-based email is received in Outlook Express.

In the OE mail tree it has the normal Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, etc., etc. folders, and following these, lower in the tree, is a reference to the web-based email with another set of the same (Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, etc.) folders under it.

The owner of the PC (senior citizen) keeps getting confused with these folders. Instead of going to the Inbox of the web-based account, he keeps going to the Inbox of what would correspond to a POP3 account, which he does not have.
Would like to trim the mail tree down so that it only displays the web based email and its set of folders (.dbx), but would like to know if this action would cause OE to go belly up.

Any thoughts?

Thank you in advance.

Hallo, all

My C: drive is a smallish 'system' partition, and it's an ever-recurring job to keep enough 'headroom' on it.

I'm also somewhat anal about old emails (and have had several occasions to be glad I am). My store folder is currently up to over 2 GB - space I could well do with freeing up. It is in fact already backed up elsewhere.

I do also know how to re-set the store-folder elsewhere.

I suppose a simple approach would be to cull hard on C: - maybe set a fairly arbitrary date a couple of months ago, and delete everything older, knowing I've got them backed up. Then reset the store location to somewhere not on C: Will that store be empty when created? If so, will it be straightforward to import from the slimmed-down folder on C, before deleting it?

I'm open to warnings and suggestions here.

This may be a bit off-topic, but what is a "disk store"? I have to write about how a "disk store" works. Is this just a different way of saying disk storage? ie: a hard drive? I couldn't find anything on google.

Thanks for your help.

Hey there
I've had a windows 7/XP dualboot working without problems for over a year, but now it refuses to start, showing the disk boot failure message. I don't remember having installed or changed anything recently.
I did the startup repair thing with the win7 disk and it didn't seem to fix anything, it doesn't even recognize any of the two installs although all the files still seem to be there (they appear on the command prompt).
Thanks for your time

Hello, recently over the last few months I've been losing disk space on my c drive for no reason. I haven't been downloading much and I've been deleting files just to save up some space but I still keep getting the low disk space error. I deleted my temp folder, I ran disk cleanup but it keeps freezing, I ran CCleaner and winstrat but they kept freezing too, and I even turned off system restore. Nothing works. Personally I don't know what to do. I'm not tech savy at all and I'm scared to do anything else or I'll just make it worse. I'm just sick of downloading stuff to solve this issue.

We have restored a SBS 2003 server which now seems to be in general fine, however our backup solution (Veritas backup exec 9.1) will not back up the Exchange public folder store, quoting the error-

Backup - \\SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group Access denied to database Public Folder Store (SERVER).
Database or database element is corrupt

We also get these warnings...
Backup - \\SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group WARNING: "\\SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group\Public Folder Store (SERVER)" is a corrupt file.
This file cannot verify.
Verify - \\SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group WARNING: "Public Folder Store (SERVER)" is a corrupt file.
This file cannot verify.
Ideally we just want to delete this and start again as the public folders are UNUSED by our customers. However when we try to delete the store it asks us to move it to another exchange server before it can be deleted. Is there another way round this???

Any help would be great!

I recently started using Outlook 2007 on my PC. It was installed on my C drive and now that drive is almost full. How can I move all my old messages and put any new ones into a new folder on my D drive? Thanks!

A:Changing store folder for Outlook 2007

You'll need to go to the "Mail" icon in control panel. Locate where your current pst file is and copy it to your D: drive (with outlook closed). Then in the "Mail" icon add the "new" pst file. Set it as default. Setting it to default makes all new mail go to that PST file.

Open Outlook and then you can remove the old pst file in the Mail icon. When you change the default PST file it will not allow you to remove the old one until Outlook opens with the new one first. Removing the old PST file will not delete it, it just makes it so that it does not open with Outlook anymore so you may want to save it as a backup or if you're looking to get that space back, you can delete it.

BTW: The PST file saves all your messages, contacts and calendar info.
