Lenovo ideapad Z510 horizontal pixelated lines at startup and after sleep or hibernate

Q: Lenovo ideapad Z510 horizontal pixelated lines at startup and after sleep or hibernate

This issue started about 6 months ago and has gotten worse. in the beginning it only occured when i colosed the lid of the laptop to put it to sleep but did not occur or not as reularly when using the windows power menu and manually putting it to sleep. When it did occur white, pink and green horizontal lines/ pixels would dance up and down the screen. I monitor the temperature and it is within normal ranges. The mouse would also freeze and unfreeze and i have to patiently wait and to access the power option menu. a restart usually solves the problem. Now i am shutting it down completely and it is getting worse. it starts (with or without lines on the lenovo screen) but by the time i get to the sign in it is full of line and now the lower part is going grey and shifting to white. if i can access restart it solves the problem. i am then able to use the computer without any issues. I did a discharge of the battery and guage reset. since i mostly use it plugged in i keep the battery at 60%. I purchased the computer in May 2014 and had a power issue (I think, lenovo never comfirmed what the problem was). It was sent back and repaired in 2015 under warranty. I sadly think i got a lemon. When I belatedly checked the new owner checklist on the forum it also reminded me that i don't have one key recovery. When i first recieved the laptop i attempted to create one in the partition drive but it wouldn't allow me to. I seem to remember it said there wasn't enough room. a technician tried to help but to no avail and said they would send me recovery discs which never arrived. Of course by this time i was happily using the computer and forgot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My graphic drivers are up to date. Again any help will be appreciated. I'm not against taking it to a repair shop i would just like to understand what the issue may be and troubleshoot what i can. Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello everyone!Details:I have a ipdeapad (z510) and windows 8.1 as os.(I use the latest BIOS version) Problem:when i sleep or hibernate laptop , the power (ac and battery both)  suddenly cut off ,and after that the power button and front LEDs not working both.(the laptop actually dies and won't turn on). my solution:Fortunately I find a way to fix this problem but its nit the best.disassemble the laptop (open the bottom of it ) and unplug the battery and ac power and plug them again. that work , but it's realy difficult to do this proccess. my guess:I think this problem can related to bios. please help me to fix this problem. Thanks!

Hi guys, My Ideapad z585, on startup, is displaying running horizontal lines, from the left of the screen to the right, and appears to respond slowly to mouse and keyboard commands. When I plug in an external display and select 'extend', the display works fine - and rapidly. For 5 mins or so the laptop screen maintains these running lines, then sorts itself out and starts working properly. The lines run across the screen rapidly like a long line of full stops, but white. Could this be a poorly connected ribbon cable? Why does it sort itself out after 5 minutes or so? Thank you.

A:Horizontal, running lines, on my ideapad z585 screen on startup

Hi, welcome the forums.

I don't have that machine, but if it is hardware it can be several things like the ribbon cable, the screen, etc.

But just to rule out a software issue, I would try a few things like:
1) Access the Bios, before it loads Windows, check if the screen also fails while you visit the BIOS menu.
2) If you have  a live CD or Live USB Flash with other OS, try it out to see if you experience the same issue.

The other idea will be to try to update video driver of the machine. You can get it on the support page of the Ideapad z585. If it is only an software issue (Windows missconfiguration) a newer driver or reisntalling the video driver may help.

Which version of Windows are you running? Can you also share the video adapter that is recognized on Windows Device Manager?

Regards

My daughter's hp pavilion dv6-6163cl entertainment notebook has begun to show a gray screen with horizontal lines at start up and after sleep (opening the laptop cover). This lasts for a few moments, then her log in screen appears. There is no sound when the screen appears and no mouse visible. It does not happen every time the computer starts or wakes from sleep.

No new software installed; nothing downloaded. Microsoft Windows is updated.

What I have done already:

updated to latest Intel graphics driver
hp diagnostics test on hard drive and memory (via BIOS screen): both passed
Windows Defender Offline scan
Microsoft Security Essentials virus scan
sfc /scannow
chkdsk /r
safe mode and restart
"windows repair" after pressing f8
selective start up
malwarebytes scan
Spybot Search & Destroy scan
uninstalled McAfee and installed Microsoft Security Essentials
System restore to earlier time
BIOS driver updated

Haven't been able to tell if the problem happens in safe mode because it happens so intermittently.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

A:gray screen with horizontal lines at start up or wake from sleep

I think it is a connection problem between the laptop monitor and the base--my daughter just showed me the display flickers when she moves the monitor. I've read about faulty or loose wiring between the monitor and the keyboard/base of the laptop.

I'll try to see if we can get this fixed.

Graphics card is ATI Radeon X1200. No updates. I had Vista on this laptop, booted from Win 7 Pro 64 disk & installed on boot drive. Laptop boots fine, works fine. But if I allow it to drop into Sleep mode, and try to wake it, the monitor comes on covered with horizontal colored lines. Screen still visible behind lines, can log in, but lines remain. Checked with separate monitor, lines on that also. Any hope for this laptop? Is it the video card? Any suggestions? I looked for the driver, but AMD evidently doesn't support any more, and of course Medion had one cryptic vgae531xvst driver that I'm afraid to try because it doesn't look pertinent to the problem. Screen worked fine under Vista OS; but after Windows 7/64 Pro install, screen problem began. Another symptom is the speakers make a screeching sound whenever a key is pressed, at the same time the screen lines are present. I've shut down sleep mode in the hope that it will keep the laptop from developing the lines. The laptop works this way, but of course I'd prefer fixing whatever is causing this glitch on my monitor. Any and all suggestions appreciated.

If you completely shut the laptop down and start it cold, then it DOESN?T happen? In that case, what is the ?first time? condition that does trigger this behavior? Starting it from fully shut down after it?s been off for a certain period of time?

What is the real cause of the issue with the horizontal lines flickering on the screen of Lenovo Y50 laptop when operating on ac adapter? Is it motherboard, a screen ribbon or something else? There were a couple of threads about it as it seems to be pretty common issue with Y50. Unfortunately, those threads either evolved into "Me too" complaint chain with no real solution suggestion or "I sent mine under warranty" and no follow-up case. If we could get some actual answers in this thread, it would be very helpful for Lenovo Y50 owners. I have recently replaced a motherboard on my Y50. I used to have the horizonal lines issue on my old motherboard. Unfortunately, my Y50 with new motherboard also has this issue, less frequent though. I am not sure if the replacement motherboard is faulty or whether the root cause of the issue lies outside the motherboard.

In random locations, at random times, my screen will flicker white lines across it with varying frequency. It because most frequent when at high RAM usage, just turned on, or charging at full battery for awhile. I tried sending it back once for repairs, but after a two month wait, it failed. I requested another repair, but tomorrow being my deadline, I believe I am unable to send it back once more. I attempted to contact warranty support, but after filling in my serial number thousands of times, the site believes I am possession of a Vibe series C phone. Is there any way I can fix this issue? Thanks in advance.

Hi One3 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

This solution may help from this article :

Update BIOS to V3.03 9ECN43WW (or later version). http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/DS100998
Update the Intel VGA driver.
Change the Panel Self-Refresh setting to ?disable? in the Intel HD Graphics control panel. (some versions do not have Panel Self-Refresh setting, skip this step.)

If the issue persists, hardware defective is highly detected. Please contact Lenovo local support center for hardware troubleshoot.

If the serial number would show mismatch from the website,  verify again from the label or use the auto detect feature but if that fails , provide a direct call to tech support . You may have the issue also documented that this behavior is an issue you noticed before warranty expires specially if the above solution did not work.

I have tried every conceivable fix for it from the forums here and none has worked. The problem that I am having is that the battery is stuck at 99% while charging and when it is off charge it will stay on for half an hour and the shut off hard without warning, it has caused me to lose progress in work. The battery gauge reset is no longer working either as it was on for hours and just kept showing 99%. I would appreciate a response back. This seems to be a problem with this make of laptop as far as Ican see.

I have a laptop which is mentioned above. Had it for almost 3 years now and suddenly shut off while I was using it. It would not charge nor it would turn on. Tried the power reset thing which holds the power button for multiple seconds but to no avail.  Then went to a service center saying motherboard burned up. Such a shame since I really like the laptop and I spent  lot of money for it since I bought the i7 core version. I was hesitant to buy other brands before actually purchasing this lenovo laptop. I have a netbook (not a lenovo brand) which I had for 7 years now. But my almost 1000dollars z510 laptop broke and it hasn't been a FULL 3 YEARS?  WTH LENOVO! And motherboard replacement is VERY expensive. I'm really STRESSED about this. And ALL my files are there. Photos, work documents etc. I can;t stressed enough about how disappointed I am.

Hi, apologies if i am posting in the wrong section, it is my first post.

I start up my computer, the bios runs as normal detecting drives etc. then it gets to "loading operating system..", from here it either stays that way or changes to a screen with horizontal blue lines and if you wait a little longer still, other colored lines appear aside these blue lines. This all happens at the top of the monitor.
I have tried to restart my PC several times and the same thing happens with these lines. I have also tried changing monitors, unplugging all inputs. Nothing.

IF there is any extra details you want, just ask.

What is the problem here, and what is the easiest way to fix it?

A:On boot, horizontal blue lines. No startup.

Hello guppyfish and welcome to Seven Forums.

When a computer fails to start it can be software related (perhaps a damaged or corrupt operating system) or hardware related (a failing hard drive, video card, etc.) Another posibility is the computer became infected with some kind of malware that has damaged or corrupted the boot files. It can be very time consuming to try to isolate the problem.

Can you boot your computer into Safe Mode by using Advanced Boot Options? If yes, you may be able to roll back your computer to a date/time before the problem began with a restore point.

Safe Mode

System Restore

If there are damaged or corrupt system files you may be able to repair them by running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot your computer after each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If the problem continues, one of the Forum experts prepared this troubleshooting guide. Many people have been able to fix their computer issues by following the steps exactly.

Today, when I opened the lid of my laptop, the display had thin black lines running from top to bottom of the entire screen. It seems like a hardware issue to me with the connection of the display. If anyone has ever experienced this please let me know if there is a fix. The lines are more visible on a white background and become more visible if I look at the screen from the side. I have attached a photo, I can assure you that it is not just from the camera on my phone, but the actual laptop . Hi OMARDAKAR ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Using the part number for your keyboard on your search would allow you to find compatible and available keyboard in your location faster . You may use the parts lookup page to get it (just keep your serial number confidential) that would show your Machine model number and likewise FRU part number for your keyboard.

You can try it match it from the FRU keyboard part number list from the hardware manual (page100-103).

Update us with the Machine model number if needed .
Hope this help answer your query.

I didn't initiate any recovery. I have a lot - and I mean A LOT - of important data on my laptop. Why the hell would I want to wipe them off? I need to start windows normally without this recovery thingy. Please, please, I need help skipping this thing.

I recently formatted my Lenovo Ideapad Z510 laptop & installed clean Windows 10 via Bootable Pen DriveWhile doing so I deleted all partitions from my hard disk including recovery partition & created a single new partition of C Drive & installed Windows 10 on it.The problem now I am facing is sometimes my laptop restarts automatically & then a blue screen appears saying Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. Then the recovery process appears& when I click recover It recover some days old version of my current operating system & uninstalls recently installed programmes. This is happening frequentlySo I want to know how can I recreate all those default Recovery Partitions&Do I need to format my laptop again for that?

When I got this used computer the first time I fired it up the monitor had white horizontal lines running about 1/2 way up the screen. As I sat there for about a minute, they slowly receded to the bottom of the screen and didn?t reappear. I wrote it off to a driver glitch or some piece of hardware getting settled in. I turn a laptop completely off when I know I?m done using it for the day. I?ve noticed that this computer has the white horizontal lines if the computer is shut down for any length of time (longer than a few hours). The longer the computer is left off, the higher up the screen the white lines go when it?s turned back on. I think it may be important to note that if I leave it in sleep mode and shut the lid it never has this issue. I never use hibernate so don?t know what it does then. Also, when there's a large block of white on the screen I can't see or access anything behind it. None of my icons are visible where it is white, and nothing can be clicked on. The computer goes through its normal startup, and the lines just keep slowly receding until they hit the bottom of the screen, and the computer operates normally after that - for now. Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this issue? It?s not a major concern right now because I can just put the computer to sleep when it?s not in use, but I?d like to know if it sounds like the graphics card or something major is going bad.

Grettings, suddenly my notebook's display went black the other day. Upon restart, I got a BSOD. After a few tries, I managed to restart normally and the screen has since then appeared littered with thin horizontal colored lines.
My notebook did not show any signals of graphics card failure in the last year and beyond.
I have been using a standing station in the last years and admittedly sometimes, when I take the notebook off and put it somewhere else, I am not too delicate. My suspicion is that something might have gotten unseated...but maybe it's just wishful thinking and the issue is more serious.
Anyways, the BSOD says "attempt to reset display driver and recover from time out failed", pointing to nvlddmkm.sys. I tried reinstalling the graphics drivers to no avail. I'd like to receive assistance from you generous people before considering to send it in for repairs.

I attached the required zip for analysis.

As a test remove either of the GPUs, if no improvement try the other one.

Suddenly I can't log on to the computer, screen requires startup password. I don't have the startup password. I did a "system restore" to access my laptop, but of course lost all of my files and pictures.

I tried the search function, but I couldn't find anything that fit what I seemed to be looking for.

The nature of my problem is that in the startup, graphics, video, etc., there are multicolored (generally green) graphic distortions (not quite sure what else to call them) taking the shape of boxes and both horizontal and vertical lines. As well, the mouse is severely distorted as well - various lines go across it horizontally and as the lines go across the mouse, the gaps are transparent. Needless to say, this makes it somewhat hard to see.

My video card (ATI Radeon 9800 Pro) has been working flawlessly, and I have never had a single graphic problem since I've had this computer. Below is the data gathered from dxdiag in case it's needed:

Name: 128 DDR ATI Radeon 9800
Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
Chip Type: Radeon 9800AGP
DAC Type: Internal DAC(400MHz)
Approx. Total Memory: 128.0 MB
Current Display Mode: 1280x1024 (32 bit)(75Hz)
Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor

Main Driver: ati2dvag.dll
Version: 6.14.0001.6297
Date: 4/8/2003
WHQL Logo'd: Yes
Mini VDD: ati2mtag.sys
VDD: n/a
DDI Version: 9 (or Higher)

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600)
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
Memory: 1022MB RAM
Page file: 195MB used, 2268MB Available
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

If you require any other information, I'd be happy to provide it.

Hi all,

Found this site and was hoping for some help. A couple weeks ago, I turned on my ASUS G74SX-XR1 and the screen never came on. I took out the battery and discharged the static electricity and my computer started up fine. Well yesterday, after coming back from a vacation where I took my laptop with me and used it all weekend, my laptop screen wouldn't come on again. I tried the same method as before and it still didn't work. Troubleshooting it, I found that the backlight wasn't coming on. Graphics card OK. I saw with a flashlight that the computer was running, but it was running Startup Repair. This worried me. I let the computer set for a day and today it starts up fine, backlight and all. But, now my laptop connects to the router, but with no internet access both wireless and wired connections neither at home or at school. Also, some basic startup programs that I've never had a problem with, are now crashing on startup. Can these two problems be related? Or is it an inverter going out and corruption of files?

This was my original post in another forum, but I believe it now to be a virus/malware problem. Here are some changes to my situtation.
1. What I mean by programs crashing is that on startup, multiple popup boxes appear with the Text:
"[APP] has stopped working. Windows is searching for a solution to the problem..."

This applies to
