I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

All of us want to prolong our battery's life. But without question every battery has a natural course of aging. After used for a long time, the battery get weak. This is cannot be eliminated, but we can prolong this aging course by using suitable method.

Usually if you want to prolong your battery's life ,you must pay attention to 3 steps in using battery :

1.Store battery :
Put your batteries in a cool and dry place when you store it.
Do not charge your lithum batteries too full before storage.
After using the laptop battery ,please clean up the metal terminals with a soft dry clean cloth.
Before storage, you should confirm your is not fully depleted. If empty, charge for about 30 minutes . Usually a lithium-ion battery should be stored at about 40% state-of-charge.
The suitable storage temperature for batteries is around 15C
Please notice this: weak batteries charge faster and remain on 'ready' indicator longer than strong ones. Also it only be used for a short time.So do not buy a used battery even if it is very cheap because used battery usually means weak battery.

2.Charge battery :
Most battery can be fully charged in about 3 hours so do not leave a battery in a charger for a long time.
When you prepare to charge your battery ,make sure the temperature is around the room temperature.
Especially need to pay attention is avoid over-charging and over-discharging.
Do not charged to higher voltages than its threshold voltage ,as it wo... Read more

A:How to prolong your battery's life

Where did you get this information? Some of it I'd agree with, others I don't. It also reads like a post you copy pasted into lots of places around the internet - however a quick googling didn't return anything.

1.Store battery :
Put your batteries in a cool and dry place when you store it.
Yes, that is generally good practice for lots of things.

Do not charge your lithum batteries too full before storage.
Ok, no prob here either, although saying that doing so can decrease overall capacity of the battery would have made it a better statement.

After using the laptop battery ,please clean up the metal terminals with a soft dry clean cloth.
So, I should take the battery out of my laptop every time I've used the laptop while not plugged in. This is not practical on some laptops and ultrabooks, nor does it seem necessary since I have never seen a corroded laptop battery.

Before storage, you should confirm your is not fully depleted. If empty, charge for about 30 minutes . Usually a lithium-ion battery should be stored at about 40% state-of-charge.
I've seen 50% thrown around, but I'll accept 40%.

The suitable storage temperature for batteries is around 15C
Ok. Haven't heard this, but I suppose it makes sense.

I've had mine almost 2 years in November. My notebook is always plugged in so I never have the battery in. I drain it down to about 30% and take it out, leave it in a drawer on my desk then once a month recharge it and run it back down to 30%. According to S.I.W it only has 4% wear so seam to work for me.

Benchmarks are artificial at best [and a benchmark from the mfg is tailored to that particular piece of hardware] I would think you would get different results using a another benchmark program such as ATTO.

In short do not put too much emphasis on any given benchmark. Modern ssd drives are reliable and it should last for quite a while so I would not worry about the drive.

I get the error
Windows can't be installed on drive 0 particion 1. (Show Detailes)

The New button is greyed out and when I select next I get

Hello hiltonr92 and welcome to the forums. See if this will help Windows 10 - Clean Install

Are you installed in UEFI Mode? If so, when you boot from the USB drive use the entry that says UEFI and the name of your USB. If not in UEFI, boot from the name of your USB without UEFI in front of it. Delete all partitions on the drive until it says unallocated and then click the 'NEW" button. The installer will create all the necessary partitions. I hope that helps.

Hi,

Just purchased a new Samsung SP2514 250 gig hdd and XP can only see 32239mb.

Tried using samsung's drive overlay to install xp, but gave up + uninstalled it -(the drive overlay).

I booted from the Xp cd + installed but XP only sees 32....gig's.

I have enabled big LBA by using EnableBigLba from www.48bitlba.com to no avail.

From searching through the forums, I see that a BIOS update may be necessary.

Do I also need to update my motherboard + chipset?

If so, are reliable updates available free on the net?

Any step-by-step instructions would be greatly appreciated.

Thx in advance

Before there was 2 partitions

D: 88GB

Now there is only 1 partition

C: 238GB

I have very important data on D drive and I am very confused right now.

Moreover, its still GPT and I also checked on Lupu Linux maybe if its on RAW but its not connecting through usb case.

Hello and thank you in advance for your help!

I bought a new Samsung 850 EVO 250GB for my old aging computer and this happened:

1. Cloned my old c: drive to the ssd, replaced it and everything went fine for a while until i started getting an infinite loop.
Windows wouldn't boot. Did a registry recovery via command line but my windows installation went to hell to forcing me to reinstall.

2. From this point everything went to hell, and after multiple windows reinstalls here's some of what happens:
- Windows installs but errors immediately follows;
- Some windows updates install but eventually start failing until windows update fails completely;
- Windows installs, updates install but eventually windows fails to load and enters repair mode claiming startup errors;
- Programs stop working for no apparent reason, some examples: Browsers won't run, file associations disappear (class registration errors), explorer;
- Driver problems with peripherals,
- File system corruption errors;
- I got situations where the computer would get stuck in a reboot/system restore/repair loop
- Automatic and manual restore points disappear making it impossible to restore to an earlier time;
- Changing the sata mode to IDE instead of AHCI seems to solve some of these issues but eventually the system locks up, the hdd light stays on, and after a reset the ssd doesn?t get recognized at startup. I have to power off to get it back but it?s the same all over again.

Now, when I boot, it sits there for 30 seconds flashing the hard drive light blinking then proceeds to boot normally. All BIOS settings are default.

Hardware details in Specs.

Booting from the 128GB SSD was fine, no obvious delays.

Any idea what might be causing this? Could the new SSD be defective?

Hey Rich,

Since it's for 30 seconds, it sounds like the time it waits before the default OS runs automatically. You might check to see if that may be it.

A:anyone install samsung 850 evo 250gb in 3542 laptop?

Whether you can use one depends on which version of the system you have.
One version has a Celeron CPU (N30xx) and an embedded 32G eMMC drive - this one CANNOT  be upgraded to a 2.5" EVO SSD.
The higher line model has an i3 CPU and comes with a 500 G hard drive.  That model CAN be upgraded to a 2.5" EVO SSD.
Yes, the EVO will be immensely faster than a conventional hard drive.

Hey guys,  I have the Lenovo Ideapad 520 (80YL00RXIN) and wanted to replace the CD Drive with the Samsung 850 Evo 250GB Solid State Drive  in order to increase the Boot Speed and over-all speed of the laptop.  So, the question is, Is the Samsung 850 Evo SSD compatible with my laptop? And will it fit in terms of size, in place of the CD Drive? Also, is it recommended to add the SSD? Any downsides to doing so?  Lastly, will I, someone who knows the basics about computers and the internal components of a computer, be able to install the SSD myself? Or would I rather outsource it to someone who deals in things like this? Thank you. Regards,Neel.

Hello,

I have the following:

- Asus X99-Deluxe/U3.1
- Intel i7-5820K Extreme Hex Core CPU Processor (3.30GHz, 15MB Cache, 28 Lanes)
- Samsung 950 PRO NVMe M.2 256 GB Solid State Drive
- Asus STRIX GTX970-DC2OC-4GD5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 Graphics Card

I have only the Asus Graphics Card in the PCIEX16_1 which is running at PCI-E 3.0 16x as expected. I have removed the USB3.1 card that comes with this motherboard for testing purposes so I literally only have the Graphics card installed.

The board has an onBoard M.2 x4 Rev 3 connector which the Samsung 950 PRO is installed into.

I believe this connector should allow 32Gb/sec bandwidth (since it uses PCI-E 3.0 x 4) - please note there is also an optional card where you can add the M.2 (or a second M.2) into a PCI Express slot - I'm NOT using this card, just the onBoard connector.

Samsung Magician says the following:
- Controller: Samsung NVMe Controller (Driver Ver: 1.4.17)
- PCIe Slot: PCI Express Root Port 1 - 2F03
> Link Speed Cur: 4Gbps, Max: 8Gbps
> Link Width Cur: x4, Max: x4
> Bandwidth Cur: 16Gbps, Max: 32Gbps

The performance data also suggests this - the read speed should be a lot higher but seems to be reduced, whereas write speed which is a lower number is over the actual "Upto Speed".

It appears as if my SSD is running at PCI-E 2.0 speeds? The bandwidth is being throttled. Any ideas how I make it go to 32Gbps instead of 16Gbps?

Thanks in advance!

A:Asus X99-Deluxe/U3.1 + Samsung 950 Pro (250GB) M.2 Speed Issues?

Believe it or not, I've just stumbled across the solution.

I am using high FSB Corsair Dominator sticks and had them using an XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) - essentially my memory was overclocked.

I thought I'd try running in "normal" mode ie. stock settings and when I checked, the Samsung Magician is now showing as 32Gbps!!

The motherboard must sacrifice something to run the Memory at the higher clock speed which means it can't run the M.2 at PCI-E 3 and has to drop it to PCI-E 2.

Worth baring in mind for anyone else trying to achieve these elusive 32Gbps speeds

For any of you looking to revive your 435 try Win8 and a ASUS GeForce GTX 650 1GB DDR5 PCI-E Video Card. You can even keep your 360w power supply as this card outperforms the OEM Radoen HD 4850 and sips about 40w less power.
Win 8 set me back $15, and the GeForce can be had for about $125. For the first time i can run those Dell Video testing routines without stuttering. I haven’t bothered to overclock it yet but it comes with software that will easily change voltages, clocks etc.

A:Studio XPS 435MT ... a new life with win8 and GTX 650 1GB DDR5

The only problem on this model is how Dell put the PCI Express X16 slot near the bottom of the case giving dual slot cards very little room to breathe.  Hopefully, things stay cool enough for you.  The GTX 650 is a pretty decent card and a good choice for the power supply.  However, for the same cost, you can get the better HD 7770 which would work also.  Those old 4800 series cards were real power hogs.

Recently I had just gotten my Samsung ultrabook Chronos Series 7. I notice that I cannot remove my battery while charging like I did for most other laptops. It is somewhat like IPod and IPhone which the battery is in-built. I am very concerned about the battery life.(For my laptop, the battery usually lasts for 3 hours for high usage and 4~5hours for normal usage)

I usually have two ways when it comes to using the battery. I will like to seek your opinion on which one of them is better, or better yet, suggest another better solution for extending battery life(for long term usage, say 3 years maybe)

1. Activate Samsung Battery Life Extender, so that the battery will only be charged till 80%.(I heard that 20% should be left empty for lithium battery) And continue using my laptop as per normal while charging without removing the battery.(I cant remove it anyway)

2. I charge my battery till 90%, unplug the AC cable, and use the laptop without charging. I heard that it will reduce the amount of charging and discharging cycle on my battery, thus helping to extend battery life.(Correct me if I am wrong.)

Any input is welcomed and thanks in advance.

A:How to extend battery life for Samsung Ultrabook?

I'd want to save Samsung Recovery and a WIn7 backup image of the HD to wipe the HD and get a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 for comparison, because I've not seen any OEM battery crapware that is better than Win7's built-in power options. The same can be said about all of the useless utilities the factory OEM's lard in along with the other bloatware that corrupts and throttles Win7. Most tech enthusiasts will not run these installs at all.

If you want to do literally a side by side comparison, then after saving your Recovery and backup, shrink C to do the Clean Reinstall to a new partition and try both as an experiment. Then you'll know for sure which runs better and can easily if you don't want it delete the Clean and Extend C again in Disk Mgmt, or we can help you delete the Samsung install and factory partitions and reclaim its space for the Clean Install.

To all owners of X1 Carbon 2017 (5th gen).I read all of those reviews where people are impressed by 10+ hours of battery life (15,5h advertised), but I can't really figure out how....!? First time I tested was a normal working day - Firefox (a lot of Flash it must be said), Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat. Nothing really heavy, no peripherals except Bluetooth mouse. Brightness dimmed 1 level below the ideal. It lasted for about 4 hours! I windows's list of apps affecting battery life, Firefox was on 1st place with 32-35% Second attempt - same set of tasks, however less Firefox (no flash) - 7 hours. Now in the middle of a 3rd attempt (using Opera this time) - battery time remaining indication goes over 10h only when I completely stop using the laptop Not many apps running in the background either (Dropbox, Skype...) So my question - do you guys get more than 10h of battery life and HOW? Do you enable "Battery Stretch"? How actively do you use it and for what?

Hopefully my explanation of this problem is not too confusing, this my first post.

My system is a multi-boot for Win7, Win8.1 & XP. I boot into Win7 most of the time. The multi-boot is controlled via EasyBCD in Win7. My data drive is a separate disk - F. I have been running this configuration for over a year without any major problems.

The system is an older Dell-XPS Core2 Quad CPU Q9450 A 2.66GHz with 8Gb memory
System drive - 1Tb with four partitions
Data drive - 1 Tb one partition

Recently I booted into Win8.1 after a few weeks of using only Win7. The data drive F: was not available. It does not show up in Disk Management and under Device Manager it shows as not connected to the system when the Unavailable Devices are displayed.

Booting back to Win7, the data drive is available, no problems with it. There are not any errors in the event/system logs in Win8.1 or Win7 related to the data drive F.

One possible cause might be that the motherboard battery was replaced about a week ago. I had to go in the BIOS and make changes for problems encountered when Win7 was booted. Unfortunately, I didn't boot Win8.1 to see if it had any problems. I've looked at the BIOS, but don't see anything that might cause this problem.

The config for the EasyBCD is below for boot into Win7
There are a total of 4 entries listed in the bootloader.

Default: Microsoft Windows 7
Timeout: 30 seconds
Boot Drive: C:\

Hello,
I would like to test power management of my PCIe SSD, ASPM can work well.
And I want to know L2 state work well, too.
Anyone knows how to let PCIe device enter L2 state in Win8.1?
Thanks.

AHCI will automatically do it, by talking to the bios.

On my computer there is a pre-installed Windows 8 which works fine for
UEFI boot (Secure boot not necessary).

Now when I switch in UEFI setup at boot time the UEFI mode into the CSM (BIOS) mode
and restart then Windows 8 is not starting any more.

As far as I find out an UEFI-based Windows 8 can only boot with UEFI mode enabled.

So my question is: Can I turn an existing UEFI based Windows 8 installation into
an CSM/BIOS based installation (=a Win8 which boots successfully even when I enable CSM in UEFI setup) ?

If yes: How do I do that?

Peter

I've a windows 8 Pro package that require me to install it as follows: Upgrade eligibility requirements apply. I had no problems here, I've upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. Also I've had no problem having done the update through the Windows Store to Windows 8.1. I'm happy. My question though is thus:

Can I, with my legal Windows 8 Pro Upgrade-key-package download the Windows 8.1 Pro ISO and use that instead of the Windows Store feature to update my system to Windows 8.1 Pro?

Thank you.

I am trying to gather some basic info about usage of Win8/UEFI and Win8/BIOS. So please participate in this noncontroversial survey. Note that you will not have a place to respond if you are not using Win8.

After responding, I?d also be interested in hearing about problems you have had using Windows 8/UEFI that appear to be associated with using UEFI (i.e., they most likely would not have occurred, in your opinion, under BIOS). Ultimately, I am wondering if you think Windows 8/UEFI is an idea whose time has come.

Hello Guru Members

I work for a small charity organisation for the elderly, (not trying to pluck heart strings), and the situation is that we were granted 7 new computers, these computers have Windows 8.1, and because we have an existing domain network we actually need to have Windows 8.1 Professional installed.

So prior to knowing that Windows 8.1 could not connect to our network, I had already started getting all the Windows updates, and cleaning the PC's of all the Lenovo add-on's software.

Once I realised that it was not Windows 8.1 Pro on the PC's but only Windows 8.1, being a charity we were able to purchase from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Centre 7 Windows 8.1 Professional licences.

I tried to use the VLC licence through the 'Windows Add-on's feature in Windows 8.1 , but a Volume Licence key is not accepted, and i have also been told that I must download the Windows 8.1 Professional .ISO from the Volume Licensing Centre, and install this particular download version.

But my question is, when I do the installation from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1 pro, will it give me the option to do an upgrade installation, I worried as I don't want to lose all the previous windows updates, and Lenovo hardware driver files.

Or, is there a way to get the Volume Licence Key into the existing Windows 8.1 to unlock the Pro features, or even a clever way to trick the Windows installation.

Any members help would be really helpful.

kind regards

Why wont my Win8 phone come up on my Win8 tablet's Desktop in File Explorer by a USB connection. It did once, but no more. Any suggestions welcome. Thank you!

A:Syncing Win8 phone to win8 tablet by USB connection.

Could be a couple of reasons.

Reboot your phone. Sometimes they just won't talk to each other. All USB cables are not equal. If you use the cable that came with your phone, you should have no problem. If you are using a different cable that came with another device, it may or may not work.

Hey all,

I have been going crazy trying to find the nitty-gritty details of what goes on under the hood with the upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 on a Surface Pro 2 I am considering upgrading.

I am aware the many Windows 8.1 devices have OEM Product Keys embedded in the BIOS. I am trying to find information on how Windows 10, if installed from a .ISO bootable media, interacts with this key, and how Digital Entitlement plays into all of this. It's currently hard for me to make sense of a lot of this. Can anyone help clarify how all these elements play with one-another?

Another question regarding this process I have currently: If I use a NEW Windows 10 product key during installation, would the new key replace the previous (8.1 OEM) one in the BIOS?

The more I find out about all this, the more mystery there seems to be to it. I am just trying to find the cleanest way to install Windows 10 on a Surface Pro 2, and this BIOS OEM key and Digital Entitlement vs. Product Key thing is really confusing me. Sorry if this isn't the best place to ask, I'm just pretty lost right now and could really use advice from someone who's really knowledgeable about this stuff, currently.

Thanks all .

I upgraded two computers from win8 retail to win 81. One totally failed and had to removed the hard drive and put it in my working computer, to roll it back to win 8.0. It would not boot at all not even to bios after that fiasco. The other computer went just fine. The MSI P7N motherboard with core2duo did not work after running and first reboot, it was left with a black screen. Had to remove hard drive put in other computer (newer with quad core, etc.. win8.1) and roll it back then put it back in the computer which had the fail. I still don't know what failed. I think that computers older than 5 years just don't have the proper hardware for Win8.1, but maybe wrong.

Is it possible to upgrade from Win8 32bit to Win8 x64bit or trick the PC into thinking its x64bit so I can install x64bit programs

A:Is it possible to upgrade from Win8 32bit to Win8 x64bit

No, you cannot trick it and you cannot upgrade. You can format and start over.

Is there a particular reason you want to get 64bit apps? Is it to take advantage of more than 4GB of RAM?

I need to rebuild Win8.1 update back to system specs. When I go to refresh or reset to factory original it asks for the disk. I put in my Win8 disk which is the retail from Microsoft. It comes back as the wrong disk. I think maybe because it is a Win8 disk and not a win8.1 disk?

Anyone have any thoughts how I can fix this?
Is there a way to get this done without having to reinstall win8 and patch all the way up to win8.1 update?

TIA

A:Can't Refresh or reset Win8.1 with Win8 Disk

Hello Blue1, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you like, you could use OPTION ONE to download a Windows 8.1 ISO file with your retail Windows 8 product key, then create a Windows 8.1 installation DVD/USB from the ISO to use to refresh/reset with.

So I bought windows 8 online months ago and what I though was a repair disk that I thought I was making at the time did not work, so I ordered the installation disk. I'm trying to use automatic repair using my new install disk but it keeps telling me it is unable to make repairs because the target windows is locked. WTF? I'm full control administrator and are not connected to any network. I really hope someone helps me here cuz my win8 OS is acting very unstable. I love the new feature that lets one make repairs without touching any personal data. Speaking of data, I do have backups available if (and I have the feeling its what I will end up having to do) I have to do the most dreaded... Complete erase & Install... UGH!! GOD I HOPE I DONT HAVE TO!!!

Okay, my log is right below.
Can't afford much new software. I was running Wordperfect X3 and Corel Paint Shop Pro x3 and the photosoftware ran better than on Win XP. Actually so did WordPerfect. Upgraded to 8.1 on Sunday and no functioning in WordPerfect. I am at least an amateur and beyond writer and photographer.
I don't know where I stand on PaintShopPro, but how can I get my documents from WordPerfect? I can't find any support for WP X3. Is it still made? Can I make it run? If so, how do I get rid of WordPerfect Mail?

When I use File Explorer on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 Preview I have the navigation pane set to 'show all folders' and 'automatically expand to folder'.On Win8 I use SkyDrive for Desktop, and I place the SkyDrive folder in 'C:\Users\Karl\'; and the SkyDrive folder appears in the File Explorer navigation pane under the Karl Dixon folder.Win 8.1preview has Skype for Desktop integrated into the OS.; and the SkyDrive folder appears at the top of the File Explorer navigation pane.
As I am currently back using Win8 due to an unrelated issue, I would like to know how to have Win8 show the SkyDrive folder at the top of the navigation pane whilst still using 'show all folders' and 'automatically expand to folder' settings.

I'm currently hoping that if I uninstall SkyDrive desktop on Windows 8 before I upgrade to the final release version of Windows 8.1, where SkyDrive will be baked-into Win8.1, that will fix it. I am only trying to replicate the behaviour of Win8.1 Preview, which I installed on both my Win8Pro and Win8EnterpriseN machines previously, and both had the built-in SkyDrive folder located at the top of the navigation pane in File Explorer.

A:SkyDrive for Desktop on Win8 and Win8.1 Preview

Hello Lilsting,

SkyDrive is not as integrated in Windows 8 as it is in Windows 8.1.

Do you have Show Favorites checked in your navigation pane settings?
Favorites - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane in Windows 8
Do you have the SkyDrive desktop app installed in Windows 8? Windows 8.1 doesn't need this.

Hope this helps,
